Shanghai’s Walled City
provides the framework for this design studio, offering opportunities to rethink the future of Shanghai in relation to its past, and to think new possibilities for urbanity and density. The project will examine the urban morphology of the traditional, modern, and contemporary Chinese city manifested in the urban fabric of old Shanghai, the former Nanshi

District, so as to articulate a critical response to it and propose its imagined futures through an urban mixed-use building complex. The project will aim at creating a thoughtful and multilayered urban and architectural response to the old city of Shanghai which traces today phases of the urban fabric’s historical evolution . Therefore,
New we ask the queations: How can we define a new urban structure , which takes into account the historical urban features and the building typologies of old Shanghai along with the contemporary ones? How can we imagine a symbolic ‘entrance’ to old Shanghai?

HOLISTIC PRESERVATION
The road system is simple when the city wall once built. This map illustrate the river system and the location of the original gates in the old town.

The road system developed rapidly in the old town with rapid economic development.

WALLED CITY - INSIDE & OUTSIDE OF THE WALL


There are many cultural and historical elements in the old town. From the old traditional handicraft shops, to temples of different religious, they have witness the history with the old town together.
Da-jing Temple is not only a Taoism templeb but also the only exsiting temple which belongs to the city wall.
Lao-feng-xiang, Shanghai local traditional jewellery handicraft has been working in old town since 1923.
This park is built in memory of the old town. It has become the most popular social for surrounding residents, especially the elderly who has emotional bond with the old town.
Xiao-long-bao, the Shanghai traditional dumpling has hundreds of years history with the famous Cheng-huang Temple in the old town The woodcut is one of the China's traditional intangible cultural heritage, with hundreds of years history in the old town.
There are several schools surround the Wen-Temple. Many students pass by the temple everyday.
Wen-Temple was built in Yuan Dynasty in 1291 after the establishment of Shanghai town. It was the school for scholars and poets for Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasty.
The bell tower was built in 1910 to ring a bell when a fire is encountered. After The Revolution of 1911 broke out, the leader of Shanghai revolution decided to respond to the uprising.
WALLED CITY - MASTERPLAN


The project aims to built a cycling footbridge along the historic site of city wall. Along the footbridge, there are many cultural facilities such as museums and workshops in memory of the traditional culture and history of Shanghai old town.





WALLED CITY - NODE 3 - THE BELL TOWER




The historical bell tower locates at the southeast of the old town, nearby Chaoyang Gate (Xiaonanmen). The bell tower was built in 1910 to ring a bell when a fire is encountered. After The Revolution of 1911 broke out, the leader of Shanghai revolution decided to respond to the uprising. Using the bell of the tower as a signal, Shanghai people gathered on the streets spontaneously to announce the Shanghai uprising.
The bell tower is not only the signal tower of the Shanghai Uprising during the Revolution of 1911, but also the only existing modern fire-fighting building in Shanghai.

The footbridge creates a unique space which has spectacular view of the historic bell tower.

4. CULTURAL ISLAND - An Urban Getaway

Cultural Centre, Hangzhou, China. Architecture Competition


Year:2020 Area: 60 000m²



Team: JFA, Jacques
The architecture area of cultural centre is about 50,000 square meters, including conference centre, auditorium, library, activity centre and exhibition space. Conference hall and auditorium locate on ground floor, and its auxiliary space loate on level 1. Activity center is on the second floor, including multifunction space for children, staff and the old. The library is loacated on the third floor which includs reading area, resarch area, resting area and library for children. The exhbition center located on the forth floor which exhibits local culture and urban planning history. There is a spiral gallery in the centre of the building which connects all the floors.

Broken glass are most commonly found in ruins. The concept model focus on the typology of single glass fragment and composition of glass fragments. The most common shape for glass fragments are triangles and quadrilaterals which can create variety of spaces. 01. 04.
