Porque a verdade é que fui eu próprio que deixei a casa dos sábios, batendo com a porta atrás de mim.

Demasiado tempo esteve a minha alma faminta sentada à sua mesa; eu não sou feito como eles para petiscar o Conhecimento como quem parte nozes.

Amo a liberdade e o vento que corre sobre a gleba fresca; gosto ainda mais de dormir em cima de peles de bois do que sobre as suas honrarias e das suas dignidades.

Sou demasiado ardente, demasiado consumido pelos meus próprios pensamentos, falta-me muitas vezes a respiração. Então preciso de sair para o ar livre, longe de todos os compartimentos empoeirados.1 Cristina Troufa (n.1974) nasceu no Porto em ano de Revolução, no ano em que Sophia de Mello Breyner escreveu que era aquela a madrugada que esperava, a primeira da construção da UTOPIA da Liberdade. A zet gallery habituou já os seus públicos ao cruzamento entre disciplinas, nomeadamente ao pensamento sobre as Artes Visuais a partir da eternidade das palavras dos poetas. Na História da Arte multiplicam-se os artistas que trabalharam a auto-representação. Poucos foram, contudo, aqueles que transformaram o seu corpo na sua obra, propondo-nos uma reflexão sobre a multiplicidade das coisas que somos, simultaneamente e ao longo da vida, e questionando-nos sobre qual o espaço da verdade existente na imagem.

Cristina Troufa, como Helena Almeida (1934-2018), é sempre o foco da sua própria pintura, alargando-nos o ponto de fuga para uma ideia mais abrangente da Mulher, das suas forças, fraquezas, tentações, misticismos, dúvidas e delitos. A utopia feminina é a utopia de Cristina que se cruza com a utopia de Sophia, numa meta-leitura entre poesia, imagem, música e celebração. UTOPIA é, assim, um exercício de curadoria em que a narrativa se desenvolve a partir de uma seleção de poemas de Sophia de Mello Breyner (1919-2004), aproveitando-se o mote para prestar homenagem à poeta em ano de centenário do seu nascimento.

Havia um mar de palavras de Sophia para começar a escrever Cristina, mas Cristina é uma dessas mulheres que traz o mar nos olhos pela vastidão da alma e que carrega de poesia os dedos, as mãos do desenho e da pintura que hoje celebramos e o riso que a desvenda para além do tempo. Por isso, partimos daqui para contar das quase sete dezenas de obras, entre pintura, desenho e instalação, produzidas desde 2007 mas com enfoque nos últimos três anos, que integram UTOPIA, a exposição individual sonhada. O trabalho da artista, parafraseando-a, é “algo espiritual, uma viagem entre várias vidas e diferentes estágios no tempo, na mesma vida, coexistindo lado a lado, através de estratégias de auto-representação que, no limite, questionam o sentido da vida. nhas crenças.” Li como de um sopro e parei no ponto em que, antes do relato, Cristina afirma que a sua plasticidade é predominantemente “figurativa surrealista”. Pus-me a pensar. Quem pinta, quem escreve, tende, em algum momento, a surrealizar-se, a sair em busca dos espaços de automatismo psíquico que nos permitem uma aproximação ao subconsciente e, porque não, à verdade, pelo menos à verdade de nós mesmos, sem medos, amarras ou indefinições genéricas. Vivemos num tempo e num espaço societário em que é proibido sofrer, em que somos incentivados ao anti-sentimento, à ausência da fragilidade. O tempo da analgésico-dependência. Não importa perceber os porquês e as causas, apenas anular as consequências imediatas, camuflar. Cair é proibido, falhar é alvo de todas as recriminações. Chorar é histeria, gritar é atentado ao pudor. Melhor sufocar, conter, não pensar, não refletir, fingir. Gonçalo M. Tavares (n.1970) designa o epifenómeno como “patologia intelectual” e sintetiza: Entre a ausência de dor e a inteligência, o ser humano, o ser racional por excelência, o ser das invenções, da filosofia, da arte, da tecnologia, optaria, provavelmente, arriscamos, pela ausência de dor. Em suma – e esta é uma das sínteses essenciais – provavelmente, no Homem, o medo da dor suplanta o medo da estupidez.2 Na auto-representação de Cristina Troufa não sentimos o medo da dor ou da exposição das fraquezas. Deparamo-nos com a inteligência e a crueza dos sentidos, com a agressividade e a doçura das expressões, com a violência e a candura dos gestos, com o erotismo e o pudor dos corpos. Por vezes, Cristina multiplica-se, como numa sucessão de frames, criando-nos a ilusão de movimento, em composições predominantemente triangulares e de estilo clássico, por vezes barroquizadas nas iminências do claro-escuro que nasce do proveito do suporte, policromado em plano ou na utilização das suas características naturais, tela ou papel, a partir do qual se desenrola a figuração. Com uma paleta eminentemente pop, ainda que com variações de luz mais intensas, Cristina Troufa revela-se no exercício da cor plana, estando parte da originalidade do seu trabalho na forma como a figura brota da base, num jogo do dentro para fora, conceptualmente aprisionando corpo e alma e, ao mesmo tempo, colocando o clamor da libertação em cada olhar. Sobre a paleta, ainda, em UTOPIA apresentam-se um conjunto de trabalhos de natureza abstrata, que revelam o caráter experimental da produção de Cristina mas onde já sentimos a preferência por um leque determinado de cores e respetivas variações. O processo parte, por sua vez, da fotografia que, em algumas situações, cabe ao companheiro de vida, Carlos, concretizar.

Como em Helena Almeida, inegável referência para Cristina Troufa. Ou então é de Cristina toda a aventura, até ao clique final. A pintura tem, assim, pré-existência na performance, se quisermos. A partir daí, Cristina explora a combinação de posições e expressões até partir para o exercício da pintura, com uma base forte no desenho, daí a sua evidência nesta exposição, permitindo aos públicos mergulhar nos jeitos e nos talentos da artista. Cada obra é, por isso, também um abraço e um gesto de amor, de partilha e cumplicidade.

Como Robert Sabatier (1923-2012), Cristina habita “um provérbio tão vasto que era preciso um universo para enchê-lo”3, é uma sonhadora de devaneios e de cosmos que recorre à vida quotidiana para expurgar inquietações e vertigens, é a autora da sua própria solidão, um ser que se abre a partir do mundo, o interior e o exterior.

De repente ele se faz sonhador do mundo. Abre-se para o mundo e o mundo se abre para ele. Nunca teremos visto bem o mundo se não tivermos sonhado aquilo que víamos. Num devaneio de solidão, que aumenta a solidão do sonhador, duas profundezas se conjugam, repercutem-se em ecos que vão da profundeza do ser do mundo a uma profundeza do ser do sonhador. O tempo já não tem ontem nem amanhã. O tempo é submergido na dupla profundeza do sonhador e do mundo.4 É, em parte, na possibilidade do sonhador do mundo, que a utopia de Cristina se cruza e se vincula à utopia de Sophia, mulher e poeta que dedicou a vida à causa da Liberdade, tendo integrado, inclusivamente, a atividade política portuguesa no período pós-PREC e tendo mantido intensa intervenção cívica sobre as coisas do Estado e o seu estado. Por outro lado, em ambas assistimos à revolução pela causa feminina. E se em Sophia ela é pela palavra, em Cristina faz-se na negação do estereótipo corpóreo, não seguindo as suas personagens as significações sociais que, por pré-conceito, atribuíamos às qualidade físicas e morais de homens e mulheres, como nos explica David Le Breton (n.1953): As qualidades morais e físicas atribuídas ao homem ou à mulher não são inerentes a atributos corporais, mas são inerentes à significação social que lhes damos e às normas de comportamento implicadas. O feminismo através da atividade militante tornou possível a reflexão sobre certas desigualdades sociais e sobre os estereótipos de discursos e atitudes, sobre as práticas sociais que fazem da mulher, como evidencia por outro lado Goffman, um ser frequentemente em exposição diante do homem e a ele subordinado.5 Cristina Troufa faz uma afirmação da sua temática a partir do seu próprio eu, colocando o seu corpo e o seu objeto de estudo para além dos limites da disrupção. As suas mulheres, ainda que sempre Cristina, representam as sonhadoras do mundo, afetam-se a todas as tarefas, atividades e eloquências. Corrompem e provocam o olhar, não de quem vê, mas de quem sente e se incomoda com o que vê.

Como Sophia e como Nietzsche (1844-1900), que, curiosamente me acompanham desde o primeiro dia do amor aos livros e às palavras, como todos os poetas e todos os filósofos, Cristina Troufa ama a Liberdade e combate a auto-censura que a sociedade lhe impõe enquanto mulher. Obriga-nos a olhar para ela e, através dela, mirarmos o nosso instante de verdade, o que omitimos ao esconder a dor, a falha e a perda. O Dia Internacional da Mulher, cuja lembrança colamos a esta UTOPIA, é também um desafio à verdade de ser mulher, sem medo da queda e com pressa do futuro, mas ainda mais urgência do presente. É por isso que não há coincidências em UTOPIA. Há apenas as mulheres de Cristina ligadas às eternas palavras de Sophia, num espaço de galeria feito livro aberto onde cabe a organicidade animal de cada um(a) de nós. São todas as mulheres que queremos abraçar em UTOPIA. Fazê-lo com Arte e em contemplação ativista do futuro. Impossível? Apenas UTOPIA. For this is the truth: I have left the house of the scholars and slammed the door behind me.

Too long did my soul sit hungry at their table; I have not been schooled, as they have, to crack knowledge as one cracks nuts.

I love freedom and the air over fresh soil; I would sleep on ox-skins rather than on their dignities and respectabilities.

I am too hot and scorched by my own thought: it is often about to take my breath away. Then I have to get into the open air and away from all dusty rooms.1 Cristina Troufa was born in Porto, in 1974, in year of revolution, during which Sophia de Mello Breyner wrote that it was that marvelous dawn, when hope and freedom arose and which she had been longing for, that inspired and led her to the UTOPIA movement of freedom. Zet Gallery has already accustomed its audiences to the intersection between disciplines, namely the understanding of visual arts stemming from the eternity of the poets’ words. Throughout the history of art, the artists who have worked self-representation have been emerging. Few, however, were those who transposed their bodies into their work, proposing a reflection on the multiplicity of things we are now and throughout life, questioning the veracity prevailing in the image. Cristina Troufa, as Helena Almeida (1934-2018), is always the focus of her own painting, widening the vanishing point towards a more comprehensive idea of what being a Woman is; her strengths, weaknesses, temptations, mysticisms, doubts and sins. The feminine utopia is Cristina’s utopia which, in this individual exhibition that zet gallery has organized for her, intersects with Sophia’s utopia, in a meta-reading between poetry, image, music and celebration. UTOPIA is a curatorship exercise in which the narrative is developed from a selection of poems by Sophia de Mello Breyner (1919-2004), taking advantage of the motto to pay tribute to the poet in the centenary year of her birth.

In a sea of words, Sophia could easily have defined Cristina, but Cristina is one of those women whose laughter unveils her beyond time, who carries the sea in her eyes through the vastness of the soul, who charges her fingers with poetry and her hands with the drawing and painting that we celebrate today. UTOPIA, the individual exhibition we have been dreaming of, is composed by almost seven dozen works of art, including painting, drawing and installation, produced since 2007 but with its focus over the last three years. Paraphrasing the artist her work is “something spiritual, a journey between several lives and different stages in time, in the same life, coexisting side by side, through strategies of self-representation that, ultimately, question the meaning of life. My work is about my life, myself and my beliefs. “ I swiftly read on and stopped at the point where Cristina states that her plasticity is predominantly marked by a “figurative surrealism”. paint and write, tend, at some point to surrealize themselves, to leave in search of spaces of psychic automatism that allow for an approximation of the subconscious and, if not, of the truth, at least our own truth, without fears, ties or doubts. We live in a time and societal space in which suffering is forbidden, where we are encouraged not to feel and to be void of fragility. The time of analgesic dependence has come. It is not important to understand the whys and the wherefores, only to nullify the immediate consequences, to camouflage. Falling is forbidden, failure is the subject of all recriminations. Crying is hysteria, shouting is shameful.

Better to choke, to contain, not to think, not to reflect, to pretend. Gonçalo M. Tavares, born in 1970, designates the epiphenomenon as “intellectual pathology” and synthesizes: Between the absence of pain and intelligence, the rational being, responsible for inventions, philosophy, art, technology, would most likely opt for the absence of pain. In short - and this is one of the essential synthesis - to Man, the fear of pain possibly outweighs the fear of stupidity.2 In Cristina Troufa’s self-representation, we do not feel the fear of pain or of exposing weaknesses. We rather witness the intelligence and crudeness of the senses, with the aggressiveness and sweetness of expressions, with the violence and bashfulness of the bodies. At times Cristina Troufa self multiplies as in a sequence of frames, creating the illusion of movement in predominantly triangular pieces of classical style, often baroque in the eminence of light-dark that benefits from the support, which is a polychromed plan, or in its natural characteristics, canvas or paper from which the figuration unfolds. Using an eminently pop palette, though with variations with more intense light, Cristina reveals herself in the use of flat colour. Part of the originality of her work lies in the way in which the figure sprouts from the base, in an inward to outward game, conceptually imprisoning body and soul and simultaneously placing the cry for liberation at every glance. In UTOPIA, we can find on palette a set of pieces of abstract nature, which reveal the experimental character of Cristina’s production but where we already feel the preference for a determined range of colors and its respective variations.

The process, as it is with Helena Almeida, an undeniable reference to Cristina Troufa , begins with the photography that, in some situations, is up to her life partner, Carlos, to concretize.

Or perhaps it is Cristina’s entire adventure, from the beginning until the final click. Therefore, it can be said that there is a pre-existence in the performance. From there, before the beginning of the painting exercise, Cristina explores the combination of positions and expressions, with a strong basis in drawing, hence its evidence in this exhibition, allowing audiences to immerse themselves in the ways and talents of the artist. Each work is therefore also a gesture of love, sharing and complicity.

Like Robert Sabatier (1923-2012), Cristina inhabits “a proverb so vast that it would take a universe to fill it”3, she is a dreamer of reveries and cosmos that uses everyday life to purge restlessness and vertigo. She is the author of her own solitude, a being that sprouts from the world, inward and outward.

Suddenly, he becomes a dreamer of the world. He opens up to the world and the world opens up to him. We would have never seen the world clearly if we had not dreamed what we saw. In a reverie of solitude, which increases the

dreamer’s solitude, two depths come together, replicating in echoes that wander between the depth of the being of the world, and depth of the dreamer. Time has no longer a yesterday or tomorrow. Time is submerged in the double depth of the dreamer and the world.4 It is partly in the possibility of the dreamer of the world, that Cristina’s utopia intersects with and links to Sophia’s utopia, a woman and a poet who dedicated her life to the cause of freedom including Portuguese political activity in the post-revolutionary period, having maintained intense civic intervention on her personal matters and on matters of the State. On the other hand, in both Cristina and Sofia, we witness the revolution for the feminine cause. And if in Sophia’s case this is accomplished through words, in Cristina’s it is done in the denial of the corporeal stereotype, by not obliging its characters to follow the social significations that, by preconception, we attribute to the physical and moral qualities of men and women, as explained to us by David Le Breton, born in 1953: The moral and physical qualities attributed to men or women are not inherent in bodily attributes but are inherent in the social significance we give them and the norms of behavior implied. Feminism through militant activity has made it possible to reflect on certain social inequalities and on the stereotypes of speeches and attitudes, on the social practices that make women, as Goffman in another way shows, beings often exposed and subordinate to men.5 Cristina Troufa makes an assertion of her thematic stemming from within, putting her body and her object of study beyond the limits of disruption. Her women, albeit always Cristina, represent the dreamers of the world, they engage in all tasks, activities and eloquences. They pervert and provoke the eye, not of the beholder, but of those who feel and become annoyed by what they see.

Like Sophia and Nietzsche (1844-1900), who have curiously accompanied me from the first day I fell in love with books and words, and like every poet and philosopher, Cristina Troufa loves Freedom and fights against the self-censorship that is imposed to her as a woman by society. She makes us contemplate our moment of truth, what we omit when hiding our pain, failure or loss. The international day of the woman whose memory we put to this UTOPIA, is also a challenge to the veracity of being a woman, without fear of falling and looking forward to an immediate future, though more so the urgency of the present. There are no coincidences in UTOPIA. There are only Cristina’s women attached to the eternal words of Sophia, in a gallery space made open book where each and everyone of us fits. In Utopia we want to embrace all women. We aim to do so with art and in an activist contemplation of the future. Impossible? Simply UTOPIA. Helena Mendes Pereira
