EXHIBITION Allora and Calzadilla Vieques Videos running throughout November

Lisson Gallery present an exhibition of video works by Allora and Calzadilla which includes work previously unseen in the UK. The works form the Vieques Trilogy are all filmed on the decommissioned military island of Vieques in the artists’ home of Puerto Rico, a U.S Commonwealth. Vieques was occupied by the U.S Navy until 2003, used for military manoeuvres, bombing exercises and weapons testing. This trilogy of films examines in various ways a number of aspects of the island’s history, environmental issues and political struggles of the inhabitants and the controlling authorities. Through sculpture, photography, performance, sound and video, Allora and Calzadilla’s works have been informed by questions of mark making, traces, and survival in a way that is simultaneously conceptual, metaphorical and spatial. lissongallery.com, 52 - 54 Bell Street, NW1 5DA, 020 7724 2739

THEATRE The Last of The Duchess running until 26 November

Dispatched by the Sunday Times to the Windsors’ house in the Bois de Boulogne to conduct an interview, Lady Caroline Blackwood, the celebrated writer and artists’ muse, stumbles into a mysterious household fraught with suppressed tensions. How is it that items of the Duchess’ famous jewellery are appearing on the market at international auction? How trustworthy is the Duchess’ indomitable French lawyer, who wields power of attorney like a rod of iron and is determined to repel any interest in her client? Most alarming, what real evidence exists, if any, that the Duchess is even still alive? Based on Caroline Blackwood’s book of the same name, Nicholas Wright’s new play about the last days of the life of Wallis Simpson recalls what it was to have been an icon in a world with very few icons; it is also an elegy for a lost age, and for lives rendered barren by the emptiness of exile. Catch it before Madonna’s forthcoming film about the Duchess ‘W.E’ is released in December. Hampsteadtheatre.com, Theatre Eton Avenue Swiss Cottage NW3 3EU, 020 7722 9301

EXHIBITION Arabic Calligraphy - The Art of the Written Word Running until 14 December

Lahd Gallery is announcing its first calligraphic art exhibition featuring several artists from around the world. Launched in October, the exhibition runs throughout this month and will trace the art of calligraphy to its historical origins, exploring how it has developed into an exacting craft of high aesthetic sensibility. The participating artists come from varied and diverse backgrounds: Tunisia born Abdallah Akar and Julien Breton both from France, Madny Al Bakry from Oman, Shukor Yahya from Malaysia, Hamid Nasir from Pakistan and India born Said Adrus residing in the UK . From an early time, calligraphy became the most important art form in the Middle East, connected to all aspects of its rich and immense cultural heritage. Across several centuries, the Arabic character has been the sphere of continuous innovation and this subtle art form has further transformed into some of the contemporary forms that are seen today. K

elly Hoppen is not your average interviewee. All celebs are busy – after all, if they weren’t in demand, if they didn’t have something they wanted to promote, there would be precious little reason to interview them – but Ms Hoppen is in a different class from any star, big or small, I’ve ever encountered. It’s not that she’s the grandest or most glamourous – though each of those epithets has very probably been applied to her in the past. It’s that Hoppen sounds so prodigiously rushed. I feel fortunate to have her attention for twenty minutes: after all, Hoppen is busy building the interior design business that both takes and has made her name, a miniempire into which she’s ploughed the best part of twenty years and which – she reminds me more than once – is a world leader in its field. More recently Hoppen has been working with Regal homes of St John’s Wood, one of London’s most admired and respected property developers, on some of their unique residences. I speak to Hoppen the day before the debut of her new home makeover show, Superior Interiors, on Channel 5. In addition, she’s just published Ideas, the seventh in her best-selling series of interior design books, and only a week or so previously I’d attended the champagne launch of her new Loft

INTERVIEW

“SOMETIMES I WALK INTO A HOTEL ROOM AND I THINK, ‘I DON’T REMEMBER DOING THIS’. AND THEN I REALISE THAT I DIDN’T. BUT IT’S FINE. I CHOSE TO GO THAT ROUTE, AND IT’S WHY WE’VE SOLD MILLIONS OF BOOKS.” Living product range at Selfridges. Clearly, Hoppen is a woman with a lot on her plate. Her hell-for-leather lifestyle means that small talk of even the most innocuous nature isn’t on the menu for today. After the briefest of introductions, I try to establish a basis for the interview by asking Hoppen how she would define her style in her own words. Generally, creatives don’t enjoy such questions – and understandably so – but Hoppen is so strongly associated with a certain aesthetic and has written and talked so widely about the broader lifestyle implications of her style that I feel sure she’ll set things rolling with an illuminating insight. It seems, however, that the lady means business: she isn’t impressed by the question. “All those generic questions,” she says, “I know that they’ve [her PR company] got answers to… If you want to spend time [asking questions] that you wouldn’t get from that. I mean, my style is documented.” Eventually, Hoppen humours me by repeating some of the PR soundbites I’ve seen elsewhere, but by this point I’ve learned my lesson: be original and precise if you want a non-weary response. The problem is, Hoppen’s work is mostly smoothly inoffensive, lots of neutral tones sprinkled here and there with hints of textural interest or feminine detail - fleur de lys prints, contemporary crystal chandeliers and hairy cushions in contrasting hues. It’s hard to imagine what an original interview question

might be; a problem exacerbated by my having decided in advance not to push any cheap emotional buttons by probing into her relationships with ex-stepdaughters Sienna and Savannah Miller (Hoppen was married to their father Ed Miller) or her recent break-up with long-term partner and celebrity hairdresser Nicky Clarke. Perhaps it’s something to do with the ubiquity of Hoppen’s trademark take on all things decorative or perhaps it’s her exasperated tone, but I feel hardpressed to find a fresh way to talk about her work if she doesn’t want to discuss it herself. Which is not to say Hoppen isn’t very good at what she does. She has, after all, been a key disseminator perhaps the main progenitor - of an interiors aesthetic that has become a staple of glossy magazines and celebrity pads alike. “I’ve been very open with my teachings,” she tells me, “Sometimes I walk into a hotel room and I think, ‘I don’t remember doing this’. And then I realise that I didn’t. But it’s fine. I chose to go that route, and it’s why we’ve sold millions of books.” There’s also no denying that Hoppen’s can be a great look when done well. I’ve been struck by how recognisable her signature style is – by how many restaurants, show-homes and hotels I’ve visited that seem to bear the stamp of her influence, directly or otherwise. The combination of neutral shades and sedate tranquility that, in Hoppen’s own words, “lets people be 13

INTERVIEW

themselves”, has a large worldwide following – that’s why she now finds herself in a position to design not just home interiors but the innards of luxury yachts, limited edition wallpapers (for Graham & Brown) and cut-price product lines for shopping channel QVC. She even endorses a range of gym equipment. With so many collaborative projects, she must enjoy working alongside others? “Licensing, we do a lot of that these days” is her immediate reply. Such honesty is all the more refreshing for being so unexpected.

I turn my gaze back to Hoppen’s core work, and the philosophy she’s made into a multi-million pound global business. Some critics, most notably social butterfly and aesthetic commentator Nicky Haslam, have labelled her style static and inert. “Those people are probably jealous,” is Hoppen’s understandable view, “because whatever problems people have with it, I don’t think you could say my work is static. Have you seen the books?” In truth, I can see the allure of her designs and tell her so: she creates understated, unobtrusive spaces that allow people to get on with living, spaces that don’t try to dominate or shape us with their own character and identity. At their best, Hoppen’s interiors can be like blank canvases, freeing the human lives that occupy them to run and flow where they will like so much colourful paint. Hoppen seems cautious but doesn’t disagree with the sentiment, and goes on to explain that her design philosophy has

“It’s not a conventional way of teaching,” Hoppen tells me, “it’s not textbook at all. We try to get people thinking in new ways. But we’re always full. People of all ages, backgrounds and interests come to learn how I do what I do.”

always been a holistic one, focusing as much on the emotional and psychological effects of environment as on its visual aesthetic. In fact, the concept most closely associated with Kelly Hoppen is perhaps the one she mentions to me now, and which seems to crop up wherever you find her products: ‘East meets West’. Referring to the way in which Hoppen’s designs seek to conjure a balance between ancient Eastern spiritual ideals of “order and simplicity” (think day-spa rather than Dalai Lama) and the contemporary Western desire for luxury and selfindulgence, ‘East meets West’ is a mantra and a marketing tool all at once. And it works. Check out some of the amazing homes in Hoppen’s online portfolio and you do indeed get the sense that, if Buddha’s bachelor pad ever needed bringing into the 21st century, Hoppen would be a shoo-in for the job. That’s assuming that he could afford her fee. Obviously though, the spiritual and psychological side of the business is about more than just paying lip service to a pretty concept: it even underpins Hoppen’s teachings at her exclusive design school. This young but nonetheless august institution takes on students of all backgrounds, ages, professions and levels of expertise, and seeks to initiate them in the art of interior design, Hoppenstyle. “It’s not a conventional way of teaching,” Hoppen tells me, “it’s not textbook at all. We try to get people thinking in new ways. But we’re always full. People of all ages, backgrounds and interests come to learn how I do what I do.” “To learn your secrets!” I offer, enthusiastically. “No, no!” Hoppen fires back, “I have no secrets!” And it’s true, I think, as we say our farewells: brilliantly successful and busy as the proverbial bee, Kelly Hoppen has no time for them. igmund Freud is undeniably one of the twentieth century’s most influential thinkers. Much of Freud’s work in the field of psychoanalysis – of which he is the founding father – has now been so widely disseminated that his influence can be seen everywhere, from the words we use to describe our personal relationships to the concepts that underpin multi-million pound marketing campaigns. It’s easy to take Freud’s insights into human behaviour for granted, but before the Austrian neurologist came along our understanding of psychological processes was frighteningly obscure. Freud helped to liberalise society’s view on the role of sex and desires in human behaviour while pioneering the “talking cure” for mental illness – he believed that exploring the mental state and talking through problems was therapeutic and beneficial to health. Though some of his theories on the unconscious mind and the mechanism of repression are among the most controversial ever propounded, they remain to this day among the most prominent and socially significant. They have helped to shape our views on childhood, personality, memory, sexuality and therapy. It’s not overstating the case to say that Freud’s notions have played a fundamental part in the progression of our civilisation. Following the sad death this summer of Lucien Freud, the world-renowned artist and Sigmund’s grandson, I am reminded once again of the profound legacy of the Freud family, and set out to visit the Freud Museum. The institution, located within Freud’s former home and workspace minutes from Finchley Road tube station in Hampstead, is now celebrating its 25th year. The house – to which Freud moved with his family in 1938 after fleeing the

Nazi occupation of Vienna – was turned into a museum shortly after eldest daughter Anna Freud died in 1982. She had preserved the property as a shrine to her father’s life when he died of cancer only a year after moving to London, in 1939. To behold Sigmund Freud’s family home and belongings just as they were in his lifetime, especially the study and library on the ground floor, is a true wonder, affording visitors the chance to examine the collections that influenced the ideas of a man who went on to influence the world. So much of modern art, literature and science had its earliest genesis in the brain of the man who ruminated in these rooms. The study is, without a doubt, the museum’s highlight. Freud’s desk and chair sit in the same arrangement today as they did eighty years ago, alongside the famous analytical couch, covered with an Iranian rug, where patients would recline after being asked to reveal whatever came to mind – a method which would become the foundation of psychoanalytical therapy. Most intriguing is Freud’s desk, littered with curious ancient artefacts and archaeological finds from Egypt, Greece and Rome, sourced by Freud from Viennese antique dealers. They speak of a man who was not just a thinker but a collector and connoisseur, and that is one of the beauties of the Freud house: it provides an illuminating insight into the character of the man beyond the work. It’s advisable to pay the extra for the audio guide to the museum, which is both fascinating and enlightening: a vital addition to the visit that helps visitors understand what certain collections and belongings represent. In one particular instance it states that, for Freud, the artefacts acted as a metaphor for psychoanalysis, and symbolise his interest in antiquity and revolutionary

theories about sexuality and civilization. Upstairs in the hallway beneath a bay window stands an antique table and two chairs, where it is said that Anna and her mother liked to sit and sew while looking out into the street below. Here the museum allows visitors to flick through a collection of extracts from newspapers emphasising Sigmund Freud’s prominence and notoriety in the 1900s. Elsewhere on the landing is a small gallery space with a collection of artwork belonging to the Freud family, one of which is a portrait of Freud by surrealist painter Salvador Dali, drawn in 1938. Talking to an invigilator, I find that it was never shown to Freud because it was thought it conveyed his imminent death; small details such as these encourage deeper delving into the Freud family tree –this was also an early home of his famous sons Lucian and Clement. You can also watch a short film in the video room that documents Freud’s escape from Vienna during World War II, explaining how it is that we are able to see his collection in London today. Though not every room in the house is open to the public, it’s possible to glean a great deal from the collections on show, in particular the glass cabinets lined with Freud’s personal items including clothing, spectacles and diaries. The museum also holds numerous exhibitions throughout the year, often installed within the rooms themselves. All in all then, a fascinating insight into the life, work and diverse influences of one of the true pioneers of human understanding – and definitely worth a day out. The Freud Museum is currently holding the 25th Anniversary Art Auction – works opened on October 20; a silent auction will run until November 20. 17

LOCAL FOCUS Favourite Local Vintage Supplier? Any of the many vintage shops on Holloway Road, including, of course, Vivienne of Holloway, we just love her 50s style dresses. Brick Lane is another gem for vintage treasures. Favourite VintageStyle Bar: Drink, Shop & Do on Caledonian Road is a favourite, but we’re biased! They do great food and cocktails in a relaxed atmosphere which is perfect for a catch-up with friends.

Close Up

Favourite Shops in the area: Camden Passage in Angel is full of great stalls and shops to have a potter around. Keep an eye and an ear out for the French femme - she knows her vintage!

Can you sum up your day in one short paragraph? When we have a shoot on we try (and mostly fail) to get an early night. Once we’re fed and watered, we take another look at the brief, and do a fi nal check of our kits. When we arrive at the location, we make sure to get acquainted with everyone, and have a chat about what direction the shoot will take. As we’re one of the fi rst to arrive to prep the models for styling, it gives INSPIRATIONS Favourite film: The Classics - Gone with the Wind, The Edge of Love, Some like it Hot. All of these films embody timeless style and act as great reference for vintage looks. Favourite song: Lana Del Rey Video Games Favourite holiday destination: Railay beach in Thailand or Ireland (home).

What does it take to be a good vintage stylist? A basic knowledge of era you’re trying to emulate is always a plus; it’s great to have something to reference when creating a look. The ability to be flexible is so important as well as being able to listen and create what people want.

With Dolly & Rhonda vintage hair and make-up specialists us the opportunity to have a chat with them before they get to work. Once we’ve completed the looks, it’s a matter of touching up throughout the shoot and making sure that it comes across on camera.Although a professional approach is necessary, we feel that it’s important to have a fun atmosphere. You can’t beat fi nishing work with a smile. Most treasured possession: Our Passports Favourite beauty brands? Aveda for guilt-free styling, Schwarzkopf to prep, then VO5 hairspray to finish. Armani makeup is an all time favourite for its build-able coverage and rich colours. Mac and Illamasqua for their extensive colour range and innovative products.

What did you do before this? Everything - between us we’ve covered a range of careers from Lifesaving to Food PR!

What’s your favourite ‘era’? 60s baby! - This decade is symbolized by women like Brigitte Bardot, whose style continues to influence today. We especially love the couples of the 60s - Mick Jagger and Marianne Faithful, Patti Boyd and George Harrison; they just don’t make them like they used to. Do you think people need to make more of an effort to dress up? Yes! We are massive fans of getting all dressed up, but we definitely don’t do it often enough. We love the glamour of time gone by, and the effort that went into daily dressing. Despite the lack of modern conveniences, these ladies still managed to look stunning. Who’s style do you most admire and why? Diane Kruger, because have you ever seen her look bad?! Helena Bonham Carter, her last Marc Jacobs ad campaign cemented our love for her. Smooth Operator Gemma Billington visits Smooth You for the ultimate body toning and firming package

T

he first thing that strikes you about Smooth You Hair & Beauty salon - even from afar is how sleek and shiny it is. The place really lives up to it’s ‘smooth’ name; every surface is polished and pristine and decorated in cream with mirrored surfaces. Even my humble glass of water and biscotti are served on a sleek mirror tray. Having opened only four months ago, Smooth You has done an impressive job of establishing itself amongst Islington’s numerous salons and is already a celebrity favourite. Known as hair extension experts, they also have an extensive menu of beauty, body and hair treatments. Today I’ve opted for a total body blitz, combining the popular Soprano Laser Skin Tightening System and Murad Body Firm treatment. Though the (unfairly brief) bikini season is now a distant memory, the desire to tone-up without vigorous exercise is always appealing; not to mention the fast approaching Christmas parties and all the little black dresses in my wardrobe that will need squeezing into. The therapies I’ve signed up for today promise to leave me toned and lithe with reduced stretchmarks and cellulite. Great! Agi introduces herself as my therapist and gives me a tour. The ground floor is a sophisticated space dedicated to hairdressing; there are three spacious therapy rooms downstairs and even a VIP area for special treatments and famous clientele who desire a bit of privacy.

The Soprano machine has been prominent in the media recently and is the same piece of equipment used for pain-free laser hair removal - something that I should perhaps have invested in as I strip down for my treatment, unveiling a pair of pale, hairy legs. As Agi warms up the machine, she asks which body bits I’m specifically looking to tone-up (the laser can be used on a multitude of problem areas including stomach, thighs and arms). Though no Gisele Bündchen, I’m generally happy with my body. However, as a self-confessed gym-phobe and dessert enthusiast, I’ve recently succumbed to the dreaded love-handles; not to mention a few sneaky stretchmarks, so Agi agrees to focus her efforts on these areas. After a relaxing exfoliation prep to my legs, thighs and abdomen, my sides are prepared for the laser infra-red treatment with a dollop of ultrasound gel. Throughout my appointment, Agi is everything and more that you could want from a therapist. Friendly, helpful and enthusiastic, she talks me through every aspect of the treatment and apologises profusely for the freezing cold gel. A new and increasingly popular treatment, the

laser works by heating layers of the skin to promote collagen production. This results in tighter, more toned skin and is a noninvasive alternative to cosmetic surgery. The infra-red light is rubbed over the gel in quick, vigorous strokes and gradually gets hotter and hotter. Agi constantly asks how I’m doing, but the experience isn’t painful at all and takes mere minutes. I’m left with two pink sides - as if I’ve been in the sun too long. A respected dermatologist, pharmacist and Professor of medicine, Dr Murad is a renowned skin health expert. The first product from his range is a mask loaded with vitamin C which is applied with invigorating yet relaxing massage technique, followed by a firming serum and cream. The slimming results will show in three weeks when the laser treatment kicks in; but my skin is noticeably brighter with a buzzing sensation as if I’ve had a serious gym session. It’s a shame to put my thick black tights back on, but I leave relaxed (with a lovely complimentary goody bag) and look forward to seeing the results; just in time for those party dresses. n Prices start from £75 Smooth You 70 Essex Road, N1 8LT smoothyou.co.uk 0207 704 1955

East Bound and Down Helen Baron heads to The Boundary for a cosmopolitan feast...

I

’m no stranger to the merits of the Boundary. Since Terence Conran first unveiled his exciting east London outpost almost three years ago, I’ve regularly been in attendance. As the affluence of the 1980s opened our eyes to the joys of fine dining (and indeed since Conran himself began to fly the flag for the form in the UK), high class establishments began to mushroom across London – most notably in Chelsea and Soho – helping to make the capital a real contender on the global culinary scene, along with traditional centres of excellence like Paris and New York. But despite its revival as a centre of arts, fashion and commerce in the first decade of the new millennium, Shoreditch didn’t have a finger in this particular pie. And Conran seems to have known this. Recognising that the area was becoming a foodie Mecca – the growing legion of independent coffee houses, high quality delis and hipster diners was a pretty telling clue – the grand arbiter of British design and restaurateur par excellence decided it was high time he lent the locale a little of his own inimitable vision. The result is the Boundary Project, comprised of the Boundary itself

and its sister canteen-cum-food shop-cumbakery, the Albion Café, as well as a small (but perfectly formed) luxury hotel. The building has thus become a hub of activity at the heart of Shoreditch, rivalled only by private member’s club Shoreditch House, which sits almost directly opposite. But naturally, the appeal of a private member’s club is limited by definition; so does Sir Terence’s effort have the edge? The first thing to say about Conran is, he does nothing by halves – after all, style is his specialty. Every detail of aesthetic, ambience and – of course – the grub itself is thoughtout and finessed to the nth degree. And with this in mind, the Boundary might just be his greatest success yet. Kitted out with divinely decadent (and yet chicly contemporary) Art Deco flourishes, the Boundary stretches out below ground in an elegant haze of golden lamplight and pristine glassware. In the warmer months, the main restaurant is supplemented with an impressive roof garden grill restaurant (which unfortunately doesn’t – or can’t, thanks to our miserably unpredictable weather – take bookings), but my latest visit came just as the brief September heat-wave was giving way to October’s bluster

and chill, and down below the gloomy streets was the perfect place to be. Still, there was mild trepidation. As I’ve mentioned, I’m no stranger to the Boundary; in fact, it’s one of my favourite restaurants. But as the menu is always changing and the standards are set so high, I couldn’t help but wonder what would result when I set out to review it for professional purposes. To start your evening in the Boundary’s bar is a pleasure indeed. My companion and I find ourselves seated in boldly cinematic Art Deco chairs and are soon sipping cool cocktails offered up by an evidently expert bartender; my Petite Julie is a heady concoction combining Smirnoff Black vodka with fine-strained Peche de Vigne, lemon, apple and basil. The tipples serve as the perfect precursors to the meal… and before too long, our table awaits.  The thing I love most about the Boundary is the simple fact that everything on the menu is of such incredibly fine quality; it makes it nigh-impossible to make a wrong choice. The freshness and inspired mixing of ingredients never ceases to amaze me. To start, my companion and I enjoy a beetroot salad and cuisse grenouilles (that’s frog’s legs to you and

Filet de bœuf au poivre I) with wines as recommended by our lovely sommelier – a Bourgogne Chardonnay and a Viognier. To follow, there’s a wild mushroom risotto and rack of lamb (accompanied by a glass of Touriga Nacional). The risotto was a deliberate choice. Normally included on a menu as a vegetarian-appeasing afterthought, it’s hardly a dish to get excited about. But at the Boundary, they do things differently: this risotto was better than good; it was supreme. Ditto the heritage tomato side salad, which was literally bursting with flavour. The girolles were fantastically foresty, the dish creamy and thick with flavour. The rack of lamb, meanwhile, was served tender in a herby crust with buttery, garlicky flageolet beans, and was a wonderfully astute example of cuisine de terroir. It’s this kind of balancing act that the Boundary manages to perform so well, serving the most rare and refined French gastronomic delights without ever sacrificing flavour for fuss. It’s a truth that seemed more present than ever as we finished our evening with a classically mouthwatering crème brûlée (with accompanying Madeira) and the St Emilion au Chocolat with a deliciously dark Maury – a consummate match for the dish. The service throughout the evening was as sharp and charming as could be wished, and the convivial, cosmopolitan buzz of the restaurant never once abated. My companion and I had a delightful evening and we promised we’d be eastbound and down for another trip to Sir Terence’s latest triumph in the very near future. Serves two 2x 200g fillet 20ml brandy 1tbs unsalted butter black pepper 1 tbs white pepper 1tbs 100ml veal or beef stock reduction 1. C rush the black and white pepper separately in a mortar and pestle until coarse, then sieve until there is no dust left. 2. Press the one flat face of the steak into the coarse peppers (mixed together) making sure they stick. 3. Season with salt then place in a cold pan, pepper side down with a tbs of vegetable oil, moving onto a medium heat. 4. When the steak forms a crust at the bottom, turn it over and seal the other side too.

“This classic dish has earned its place back on our menu by popular demand and its simplicity leaves no room for error. The cracking of the pepper and searing must be just-so, the draining of excess oil and foaming of the butter and flambé not underestimated, to get the finished dish right.” 5. S train any excess oil off and add the butter; when it starts foaming add the brandy and flambé, then add the veal stock and bring to the boil. 6. T ake the steak out and put it onto a tray in the oven at a low temperature. 7. S train the sauce and finish with a teaspoon of double cream. Serve the sauce around the fillet on a warmed plate with sides of creamed spinach and classic pommes frites.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

ICE, ICE, BABY! Harry Plume discovers what’s cool about the Icebar...

A

fter the very pleasant but unseasonably hot start to October with temperatures soaring through the record books, my date with the IceBar coincides with the dramatic cold snap and predictions of snow! Quite timely to rug up, however still living the Indian summer dream, I arrive unwittingly wearing open toed shoes. Nestled at the top end of Heddon Street, a popular street for alfresco dining and cocktails and just off Regents Street, the IceBar can provide a fun night ‘with a difference’. We start our evening in the Wolf Bar on Ground level, and enjoy the spacious and relaxed surroundings. The dark wooden furnishings and draped transparent curtains giving it almost a Balinese feel. There is a vibrant atmosphere, a very well stocked bar and drinks menu to match. It offers a nice option for those wanting to switch off and escape from the real world. As it nears 7.15pm, there is a real buzz as people mill around the entrance for their 40 minutes of frozen fun. With a strict limit of 60 per session, it is best to book in advance to avoid disappointment. The Below Zero bar and the entire interior is made purely from ice harvested from the frozen Torne River in Sweden, known for its exceptional and crystal clear purity. As we step inside the UK’s only permanent bar made of ice, the sub zero temperatures tingle my exposed toes, but my body is kept cosy and warm in the stylish blue thermal cape with faux fur trimmings. My favourite moment once inside the invigorating igloo is sipping from the precision cut iced cube that contains my pleasant vodka cocktail, which surprisingly

does not stick to your mouth or tongue on contact, so no iced injuries! Once my toes begin to lose feeling, we exit and de-cape and are led downstairs to the Moose Dining room, where we are transported from the bright white land of ice to the dark warm depths of comfort. It is the perfect complement. The lower ground restaurant seats up to 75, however with the option for private hire, the larger section of the restaurant had been taken over by a function. The smaller area includes the bar with a chic edge and continues the theme of the Wolf Bar with warm dark furnishings. The collection of booths and tables create a relaxed personal atmosphere and provides a sumptuous answer for both intimate and social affairs. Continuing the cocktail theme, we opt for bubbles and a dirty martini, 3 olives please! The beverage options cater for all preferences, so it is difficult to be disappointed. Turning to the menu, IceBar offers ‘social’ sharing plates, light bites or more substantial meals and there are plenty of enticing options. We select a number of sharing plates, a mixture of seafood, meat and vegetarian, and our dishes arrive sporadically throughout the evening as we catch up on the week and intermittently chat with the attentive waiter passionately relaying stories of his IceBar experiences.

We love the Cauliflower risotto, mascarpone, shallots, pine nuts and truffle oil. The creamy richness of the mascarpone complemented by the texture of the cauliflower and pine nuts creates a very decadent comforting dish. The rocket parmesan salad with a classic vinaigrette is such a simple dish and succeeds on the quality of ingredients. This one thrives and is a perfect complement to our other selections. Other appetising dishes we sample include fresh seared scallops, salt ‘n‘ pepper prawns with a definite zing of chilli and garlic, smoked wood pigeon and Merguez sausage ravioli, which together make for an enjoyable savoury feast of flavours. We manage to find a little space for desserts, the menu just too tempting to ignore. We share an indulgent Chocolate tart with hazelnuts and a Baileys mousse and a selection of sorbets to cleanse the palette. These are a lovely combination of refreshing treats to end our evening. The IceBar is not only a fun night with a difference but also offers a great setting for some culinary delights. It presents a complete evening of wining and dining, with a refreshing twist.

SONIA MURRAY Sonia Murray is the owner of chic hair and beauty salon 171, named after its Upper Street location. She’s been in the business for the past fifteen years so we decided to chat to her about Islington -– and what makes 171 a cut above the rest How did you start your business, 171 Hair & Beauty? I started out in Harrods and was a beautician in Selfridges, then I had my own shop in the West End on both Duke Street and Chiltern Street. However, I live in Islington and when we started 171 fifteen years ago there were no beauty salons. There were plenty of hair salons but there was a gap in the market for beauty specialists. How did you go about deciding the interior decor for the salon? I’m lucky enough to be friends with interior designer Graham Wynne who has worked for the BBC on the programme Changing Rooms. He designed the salon and his style is very clean and sophisticated.

Obviously you have combined both hair and beauty services at 171 from the start. What kind of treatments do you offer clients? What are the most popular? We offer a full range of treatments, from waxing to manis and pedis and specialist facials and electrolysis. We’re open to anything new in the market and what we think may be popular with clients, but we always research, discuss and try out everything before we offer it. As far as hair is concerned, I’d say the most popular service is colouring and beauty-wise, it’s got to be waxing and nails. How popular are your extensions and bridal hair services? Extensions are quite popular but they are very specialist and can be expensive - we have around five or six regulars who we do them for. Our Bridal services are very popular as we don’t charge a fortune unlike salons in the West End. With bridal hair and make-up, the first thing we do is check stylist and bride availability. We insist that brides come in and have a trial with us; some don’t want one for cost reasons but we actually offer a very good deal and spend a lot of time with the client.

A trail run is imperative; a bride may not wear much make up in general but the likelihood is, she will on the big day and we’ll need to work out what she’s comfortable with. We like to really get to know the bride. What sets you apart from other salons in the area? I have to say that we have a very good team of colourists and we try to give as best a service as we can. We like to talk to clients beforehand about what they want to achieve and what fits with their lifestyle. It can be difficult to do this on a Saturday when it’s manic - I would advise clients to come in during the week when it’s less busy - but we always endeavour to talk things through with clients. What do you like about your Islington location? I have to say it’s the people. Islington has a young, vibrant crowd and I learn something new every day - not necessarily about hair or beauty - just something interesting. It’s always nice to meet new people. You also offer packages for men including waxing, massage and facials. Have you always offered treatments for men and do you find that they are now

more popular than ever? We’ve always offered the services and I used to treat men in Selfridges too. Truthfully, health and beauty treatments for men have always been popular, but it’s just more accepted these days. The boys will have everything the girls have! Quite often men are given gift vouchers from their partners who’ve visited the salon themselves and want their boyfriends to have a treatment too. Sometimes they can be a little apprehensive beforehand but once they’re in they love it! 171 have an emphasis on contemporary hair-styles and the latest trends. What styles are in vogue this season? I’d say quite severe and exaggerated hairstyles with a feminine twist. Colour wise, soft Autumnal tones are key and warm reds are very popular this season. Our clients tend to be their own women, independent with sophisticated taste, so they know exactly what they want. Again, we like to discuss everything we can offer with all our clients to work out what suits their lifestyle. 171 Upper Street, Islington N1 1RG 020 7354 2266 171hairandbeauty.com

Find the right mix of fabrics, wallpaper and furniture and you can create a warm, homely feel this winter with blue and white, says interior designer Gail Abbott

B

lue and white is a classic combination, used in the English country house for generations. But for warm, relaxed winter rooms, forget brilliant white and vivid blues -best kept for hot Mediterranean sunlight - and choose instead a gentle juxtaposition of soft white paint colours, crumpled vintage linens, bare wooden floorboards and traditionally patterned wallpaper. You

will have created a home with effortless style that will welcome you back on long, dark winter nights. Surfaces that have aged with grace are so much more comforting than spanking new layers. So why not ‘undecorate’ a fire surround by stripping it back to its original paint layer and leaving it at that. Look for junk shop furniture that you can bring back to life in flea markets or on ebay. Clean polished wood areas and rub

Don’t be precious about matching colours, or worry about coordinating patterns, the beauty of the system is that any combination of stripes, florals, check or plains will look beautiful together if they are united by the timelessness of blue and white. 53

2. CLASSIC DINING Hand-loomed linen tablecloths and monogrammed napkins combine for a style that is truly ageless, so collect old table linens, bone-handled knives and silver plated cutlery, and mix and match with modern glassware and china.

• Turn a hand woven sheet into a loose cover or tablecloth, from £115 for 1.40 x 2.30 metres; linen napkins from a selection, beyondfrance.co.uk • Blue toile de Jouy fabric from £10 a metre, surreylinencompany.com • Find Vintage floral fabrics from around £42.50 a metre, as well as a wonderful, ever-changing selection of household goodies at vintage-home.co.uk

3. SIMPLE TIE Use a length of jute string for artless napkin ties and lay a blue and white Irish glass cloth down the centre of the table for a stripe of colour.

• Ian Mankin stocks a huge range of traditional stripes in blue and white, like Ticking, £22.50 a metre, or Angus Stripe linen, at £39.50 a metre, ianmankin.co.uk • Farrow & Ball have resurrected a stunning range of traditional wallpapers, like their St Antoine, originally produced in 1793, £82 per roll, farrow-ball.com

4. VINTAGE BLUES Blue is an obvious choice for a traditional bathroom, but choose a grey-toned white for the walls and soft, blue grey for the underside of a rolltop bath or wooden bath panel.

• Fired Earth’s paint colours are second to none, so look for Kevin McCloud Lime White, Flake White and Alabaster, £29.50 for 2.5 litres; or the National Trust range of blues like Crom Fog, Painter’s Grey, or Larder Blue, £32.50 for 2.5 litres, firedearth.com.

5. PATCHWORK CHAIR Look for a mix of two or three vintage fabrics and use them to re-upholster a classic armchair for a corner of the kitchen. A simple seaside stripe works well with a pair of 1930s cotton florals.

6. DAMASK BEDROOM Wallpaper can bring a classic look to a bedroom, but give it a contemporary angle and use it sparingly on one wall as a feature wall behind the bed, or hang up a flat panel of fabric instead. Team it with crisp white, lace-edged pillow cases. gailabbott.co.uk

LONDON UNDERGROUND Take a tour of the London streets, one of, if not the, finest metropolis in the world and what do you think you are going to see? Can’t see anything? Then look... beneath you!

INTERVIEW BY JANE TARRANT

Basements that’s what you’ll find; hundreds of them, all over London. There are so many basements being built around London that you would be forgiven for thinking we are becoming a subterranean species. Some high profile celebrities are so against them, when even more of the glitterati are having them built. So, we thought we would ask our old sparring partner, Steven McDicken from Metropolitan Basements, to justify the upheaval, the digging , the dirt and the bad press! Why do people hate basements? The only people who hate basements are the ones that don’t need them. Everybody else I know loves them. So… why do people love basements? Simple… more space! and at a fraction of the cost of moving home.

At a fraction of the cost… please explain? Well if you wanted to move home it would cost you say £800 to £1500 per square foot for that extra floor space and if you build a basement it only costs you, £400 per square foot including the VAT. In fact, what you would save on the stamp duty you have to pay when moving house, goes a long way to buying a large part of your basement! So are you saying it’s purely for money? No… more space! But, by doing so you just happen to create rather a lot of equity in your home. It ‘coincidently’ makes good financial sense. Unless you just sell it on, of course.

What about the bad press? People will always be people; they will make a mountain out of a basement, then they will turn around and build one themselves. No one wants to live next door to a basement being dug… the noise for a start, do you think they will ban them eventually? They can’t, they’re largely permitted development and you can’t see them. As for the noise, they are no less noisy than digging your garden and they are a million times quieter than someone digging up the road. Traffic noise in London is more than the sound of a basement being dug. Anyway, we work 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday, when everybody is at work.

60

Metropolitan Basements_v2.indd 60

23/09/2011 23:14

Planning is not an issue then? There is no reason why it should be. Except listed buildings and even then it can be done. How long to build one? Depends on the size but let’s say 1220 weeks for the majority of houses in London. Who designs them? We have an architect who is rather experienced with them. He wrote a book: Architect Your Home by Hugo Tugman. There is a section in there all about basements too. You can buy it from www.anovabooks. com Don’t be put off by his picture, he is actually one of the nicest architects I’ve ever met. So what’s your parting shot to the basement critics and lovers alike? Well, not a parting shot - just a statement that the majority of people will eventually get a basement dug to gain that extra space, especially in the more affluent areas of London. Even if you are against it now, you will succumb in the months or years to come or the people that move into your house after you are gone will get one done. It’s just going to happen, like it or not, and it’s going to be widespread, just in the same way double glazing stated in the 70’s, but much less intrusive or visible because it’s underground!

“For people who’d like a home aquarium, but think it’s too much work...” Now you can enjoy the magic of keeping fish, without lots of work Everything you’ll need, in one box

Buy a biOrb and you’ll get everything you need to start your aquarium. You won’t have to go shopping for any additional parts and you’ll get full instructions to help you on your way. Just add water and fish. Then sit back and enjoy the magic of keeping fish without lots of work.

Slim built-in lighting

It’s so slim you’d be forgiven for not noticing it was there. The LED light is neatly built-in to the lid. The LEDs themselves are bright, low voltage and long lasting.

The truth about filters

Many traditional aquariums have a filter on the side or at the top, but guess what - fish waste sinks. biOrbs have a filter hidden at the bottom of the aquarium. Put simply, the filter works where there is most to filter. We’ve even made it easy to change. It takes seconds and you only need to do it every four to six weeks.

Inside the patented biOrb filter

Made from acrylic, not glass

Acrylic is ten times stronger than glass. Why’s that important? Just ask anyone who’s broken a glass aquarium and flooded their home. Did you know it’s also noticeably clearer? Acrylic has a transparency rate of 93% but glass only allows 70% of light to pass through. With a biOrb it’s been said that “it’s like watching fish in high-definition”.

There’s a biOrb for you

biOrbs come in many shapes, sizes and colours. Visit your local aquatics store or you can buy online at www.reef-one.com

LEGAL HEMA ANAND FROM COLMAN COYLE, GIVES HER EXPERT ADVICE ON ALL YOUR LEGAL PROPERTY QUESTIONS It has come to our attention that the Freehold of our building has been sold to a property based company. I do recall reading somewhere that the freehold cannot be sold without first being offered to me and my neighbours. There are six flats in the building. Is this correct? You do not say how you have discovered the sale of the freehold interest. For example, has the new landlord sent notification to you to advise of the change in ownership? If so, this can have an impact on what recourse may be available to you and the timescales within which you would be required to operate. However and generally, subject to certain criteria being met, where a landlord is proposing to sell his interest in the building and the rights of first refusal applies, then the landlord must by law offer first refusal to the leaseholders before the landlord is in a position to sell the same to another party. The rights of first refusal are contained in the Landlord & Tenant Act 1987. To establish whether or not the rights to first refusal apply then certain criteria need to be met. For example, the building must contain at least two flats, no more than 50% of the building can be in non-residential use and more than 50% of the flats must be held by what is referred to as a qualifying tenant. A qualifying tenant is generally a leaseholder of a flat subject to a long lease (or a lease originally granted for a long period regardless of how many years are now left). A qualifying tenant can also include a leaseholder that has a fixed or periodic tenancy, although please do bear in mind that a tenant of three or more flats in a building would not qualify as a tenant of any of the flats. There are certain landlords that are exempt and therefore the rights of first refusal do not apply. For example, many housing authorities or registered social landlords would be an exempt landlord. It is therefore important to establish whether the rights of first refusal actually apply. If so, then subject to certain timescales and meeting further requirements, you and your neighbours could have the right to request certain information in respect of the sale and force the new landlord to sell the interest acquired by them to you. (It is also a criminal offence for a landlord to fail to comply with statutory requirements in respect of rights of first refusal).

HAMPTONS INTERNATIONAL MUSWELL HILL OFFICE

market insight WITH

How has the second half of 2011 been for you? It’s been a very exciting second half of the year for me for a number of reasons. I left my previous company after 10 years to join Hamptons International in its new venture in Muswell Hill. The new Muswell Hill office, which has both a Sales and Lettings function, is part of an exciting wider programme of expansion currently taking place at Hamptons International. Our branch has been open for just four weeks and the initial response has been very positive. We have a wide range of properties on our books already and the office is buzzing. If any readers are passing by, please pop in and say hello! Do you think that Muswell Hill has bucked the trend in the market over the last two years? Muswell Hill has seen its fair share of ups and downs but the area is very well known for its schools and as a result it remains pretty resilient. There is always a steady stream of young families moving into the area and many people who move here do so for the long term, so fluctuations in the property market play less of a role in the grander scheme of things. A number of the people selling at the moment bought quite a number of years ago.

CHRIS MULLIN

How long have you been based in Muswell Hill and what makes this area so special within London? I used to work in the City but I’ve lived in the area for nearly 17 years. I love being close to London but at the same time being able to walk the dog at Ali Pali and Highgate Woods, and being able to escape from London quickly should I need to! The 10 minute journey to work is also a real plus! I like the interesting mix of independent shops and larger retailers; I do all my food and clothes shopping here; and I never get bored of the variety of places to eat. There’s a very strong sense of community in Muswell Hill, both for the residents and for the local businesses. What types of properties typify the area? Muswell Hill is predominantly a mix of detached and semi-detached villas and large terraced family homes. The Broadway is well known for its art-deco fronted shops with the attractive flats above. There are a number of new developments in nearby Hornsey and Crouch End. The diverseness of many of the houses keeps it very interesting for us as agents. Are you optimistic for the rest of the year? The traditional post-Summer activity is in full swing at the moment both for us in Muswell Hill and across the wider Hamptons International network. While of course people have been affected by the current economic conditions, people still need to move

home and there are plenty of buyers out there. We are finding that well-priced properties are selling quickly and so are advising our clients that realistic pricing is key to a successful sale We’re expecting the market to remain busy until the Christmas slowdown, although we will be preparing ourselves for another thriving January market. In an area with so many Estate Agents what makes your agency different? Hamptons prides itself on offering its clients and customers the best of both worlds: as well as a strong network of offices across the South of the UK and London, we have an impressive international network which helps us reach an international audience. This has already helped us in the Muswell Hill branch. As well as that, Hamptons is an established estate agency business with 140 years of heritage but we are also proud to lead the industry when it comes to innovation in the business; the fact that we were the first agent to launch apps for the iPhone and iPad is a good example. Above all, Hamptons prides itself on offering a first-class level of service to our customers, to the way they are first greeted when they step foot into our office to how we market their property to how we communicate with them throughout the Sales cycle. This is at the heart of what we do and has been the key to the Hamptons International network to date. 81
