LETTER

I

for one, love the festive season. And whether there’s been a bit of bargaining for good behaviour or not (all I’ll say is: Elf on the Shelf...), it’s always so much more magical with little ones. A little less magical is the impact that Christmas has on the environment. In a year where sustainability has been more than a buzzword, I think that many parents will be considering what they can do to make this yuletide a bit greener. With this in mind, I asked eco blogger Karen Maurice of N4 Mummy for her tips on having a plastic-free Christmas. Elsewhere in this issue, blogger Chloe Thurston shows us how to throw a festive party for kids; we meet Charlotte Wood, of Polar Post, who writes the most beautiful letters from Father Christmas; and our columnist, Alexandra Hunter, discusses co-parenting over the season of goodwill. And finally, our gift guide has the best presents for all of the family. Enjoy, and a very Merry Christmas to you all.

S

hopping for a pram, especially as a first time parent, can be pretty overwhelming. Nimble or sturdy? Is it practical? Will I look like I’m pushing my baby around in a spaceship? Has that one got wings?! Like, actual wings?? We live in an old city with cobbles, curbs, potholes and uneven surfaces, so the Occaro is the perfect choice. It’s light, easy to manoeuvre with one hand (because your other hand is full of coffee, obviously). It’s also arguably one of the most practical prams out there. I love the basket, it’s really big, and secure enough that you can easily fit a changing bag and your shopping without losing items on the way. It’s simple to install the carrycot or seat and the materials are washable and easy to take off – no contraptions. Is there anything that I don’t like? Not really. One of the only things I would mention is that the basket can be slightly awkward to access if you have the carrycot on, but that admittedly is much more secure, so it’s swings and roundabouts. The Ocarro is one of my favourite baby items we own. I would 100% recommend it – it’s so practical, easy to handle and is one of the best looking prams on the market. mamasandpapas.com

WORK Katrina Parsons on launching new mama and mini occasion wear brand Maeve + Me

I n t e r v i e w C A R LY G L E N D I N N I N G

Q Tell us about Maeve + Me, what inspired you to launch it? A I think from a young age I always knew I wanted to start my own business. But many years and podcasts later, I still hadn’t had that light bulb moment. They say to look out for a problem to solve, but nothing ever jumped out to me that I was passionate about. It wasn’t until Maeve was 5 months old and I was looking for outfits for a wedding, that I had that moment. I had spent months doing research online and in high street stores looking for matching outfits. What I found was that the quality of the fabrics was poor, they were too tight, had terrible slogans on them and none were breastfeeding friendly. When I did finally put together an outfit for us and walked into an event, I can’t tell you how magical it felt. It had been so long

INTERVIEW

“I could give mums a moment in the spotlight, looking and feeling their best”

since I had felt so good in myself and not only was that moment about me, it was about us. I will always treasure that memory and have the photos to remember it. And there it was… A problem I knew I could solve, and I could give mums their moment in the spotlight, looking and feeling their best. Q How long did it take to get the business up and running? A It was October 2018 when I had the idea, and in the same month while on maternity leave, I was made redundant from my full-time job. I put my redundancy money into a business account and bought our domain name. My background isn’t in fashion so it took me around 4 months just to research and study the industry before I could even think about approaching designers or factories. Around 2 months later I found my designers and we had finished the sketches and hand painted prints. We did have some problems with our first factory so that meant the initial products we made won’t actually be released until next summer, but we finished the samples for these in July. So, 9 months from concept to a finished sample, and then around 4 months working on the website, social media and marketing to get to launch stage. It would be much shorter if I had industry experience and was working full-time, but I am happy with the speed we got to market in.

Q What made you want to focus on mama and mini style? A It’s not something I had really thought about before I had a daughter of my own. However, being pregnant for 9 months, giving birth, breastfeeding and sort of feeling out of touch with my body, I wanted to wear something that made me feel good. It was this search for something I could wear to a wedding that was breastfeeding friendly, flattering in the right places but also that I could bond in with my daughter that swayed me to the matching style. Also, because what was available was really uninspiring and even though I had never worked in fashion or design, I knew that I could disrupt the current market. Q How important is sustainability to the business? A It’s an important thing to me personally and something that I wanted to be at the core of the business. I don’t think you can start a business in 2019 and not have this as one of your foundations. When I started my research into the fashion industry it was shocking to discover that it is one of the top polluting industries in the world. But the more I looked into sustainability, the more complicated it became. What does sustainability really mean? No matter what you produce it has some impact either in fertilizers, pesticides, water consumption, printing, manufacturing, transportation, even to microfibres that shed in the wash. It’s a big cycle with many factors to think about. So sustainability to us simply means treading as lightly as possible and considering our environmental impact at each and every step, and in every decision we make. Q How did your own motherhood journey play into your decision to launch the business?

A Before I went on maternity leave and was made redundant, I was working in the casino industry managing VIP customers. But when I fell pregnant and had Maeve, I feel like the darker side of the industry started to take a toll on me. Becoming a new mum and experiencing everything that came with it, I knew I would only launch a business that would be meaningful to others and that I connected with emotionally. So when I had my light bulb moment it gave me the fire in my belly I hadn’t had for a long time and I knew there was no turning back. Motherhood has given me this superpower I never knew I had. You know when they say “if you need something done give it to a busy person”? Well if you want to launch a business get a mum to do it. Q And finally, where will you be wearing your Maeve + Me dresses this festive season? A Where won’t we be wearing them…? December is such a busy month with events and special occasions so they will be making lots of appearances. It will be the first time in 5 years that I have been back to Australia for Christmas, so a great chance for my family to see us wearing them in person. We will also be doing an early Christmas lunch with my husband’s family in St Albans. I believe in buying quality over quantity and we chose extremely high-quality fabrics that are made to be worn time and time again. maeveandme.com @maeve.and.me December 2019

PHOTOGRAPHER: ANNA EJEMO

Q How did you get into photography and styling and what do you love most about it? A I love to capture the small moments and everyday magic and I have always loved to take pictures. I started very early and then I studied photography, but I never planned to work with it. Today it is my full time work and I love it. I meet so many inspiring people and get the chance to see the most lovely places every day.

Q How important is Instagram to your work and what do you like and dislike most about the platform? A Instagram is a big part of my work today so I guess it is very important to me. Instagram gives me so much and all the sweet people out there, I could not be more thankful for all the love I get every day. Some people say that Instagram makes them stressed, but I think you have to find a balance between the ‘Instalife’ and the real-life. A smart woman once told me “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans” and that is so true and we all have to remind ourselves that. Q What’s it like raising a family in Sweden? A I guess Sweden is a great country for having a family, UNICEF ranked Sweden as one of the world’s best places to raise children. It is very good to have help from the system like parental leave, daycare and more. I guess when you are living here you sometimes

mama h ood Q & A

forget how lucky we are to have all of this, for free! The fact that you get paid parental leave for at least one year, isn’t that just amazing? Also, we are very equal and many families share the time and care of the kids. Q How will you be spending the festive season this year? A We are going to celebrate Christmas Eve in our house with my parents, grandparents and brothers. We always start with a lunch and then the children go out to search for Santa, they are so excited. Afterwards we are having a dinner with a lot of food and then Santa (our neighbour) is coming with Christmas gifts. I am a big fan of Christmas and I love to start the festive preparations early in December – baking gingerbread cookies, decorating the Christmas tree and all of that – it is a lovely time of the year!

Q What are your family’s favourite Swedish Christmas traditions? A I think that Christmas time is magic. I remember Christmas when I was a child – it was the best day ever. In the morning we always woke up very early and got a small Christmas gift. I think the mornings are so cosy and I want to give my kids the same great Christmas memories as I had as a child. Christmas should be no stress and just cosiness and love and we are very good at that in my family! Q And finally, best and worst bits about motherhood? A There are SO many good things about being a mother! Small kisses, the first “I love you”, the first little smile, all the laughter and proud moments when you see your kids doing great things and the moments when you pick them up from day-care and they

run to you and give you the sweetest hug. So much love! Being a mum is also so very hard sometimes. Sleepless nights, tears that don’t stop and the feeling that you sometimes lose yourself. Staying home with kids all day is so much work and the hardest adjustment for me when I first became a parent was accepting the fact that there is never a break, you have to be on your game 24/7. There are also other not-so-fun body changes that are common in the first few weeks, swelling, breastfeeding troubles or stitches after a vaginal tear or c-section. The first weeks with a newborn you feel so sore and that was so hard for me when I had my first daughter Hollie 6 years ago, I felt so sad and sore for weeks. I think it is so important to talk about. December 2019  |  33

Absolutely Mama meets Charlotte Wood, the founder of Polar Post, a spellbinding letter writing service from Father Christmas I n t e r v i e w C A R LY G L E N D I N N I N G

Q Tell us about Polar Post. What’s it all about? A Polar Post is the official letter-writing service of Father Christmas. Every year at Polar Post we send out hundreds of letters from the North Pole. Our letters are little works of art, scribed by some of the best calligraphers in the business, with addresses that come straight from a child’s imagination. Every year we create a new First Class stamp and letterhead, and we are proud to have featured the work of artists such as Helen Stephens, Molly Brett and Claire Fletcher. Principally though we are about magic. We believe that Christmas isn’t an enormous pile of presents. It isn’t even being able to eat chocolate for breakfast. It’s a feeling: it’s magic; it’s believing; it’s seeing the impossible happen before your very eyes. We strive to bring about that feeling in everything we do here. Q How did you come to set it up? A When my brother and I were little we always received a letter from Father Christmas. It was the first thing that we looked for on Christmas morning and that little pile of letters came to mean so much, especially as we got older. Presents are presents, but presents with a letter from the big man, that is magic. When my daughter Rose was born I spent much of those sleepless twilight hours focusing on how I was going to make her first Christmas special. A letter had to be the starting point. When I couldn’t find what I wanted I sat down one nap time and put together my own letter for her, complete with penguin stamp. And that was the very first Polar Post! Q Favourite letter you’ve had to write so far? A Favourite is probably not the right word but this is definitely the most important letter I’ve ever written. Two years ago a lady got in touch and told us that her best friend’s baby had been born stillborn. She knew that Christmas was going to be incredibly hard for them and asked us if we would write a special letter to this very special little boy, Dexter. It was undoubtedly the hardest letter that Father Christmas has ever had to write, but ultimately it was written less by him and more by one mother trying her best to comfort another mother. I have since got to know Dexter’s mummy, Ruth, and with her kind permission we made the letter available to other families in need of it, ensuring that all profits from Dexter’s letter go to Tommy’s Charity.

mamah o o d INTERVIEW

“Our letters are little works of art, scribed by some of the best calligraphers in the business”

Q What’s the most requested gift from Father Christmas? A He has been asked for pretty much everything over the years, from a reallife shark to a humble satsuma. The most requested present however, remains a teddy bear and there’s something very comforting in that I find. Q Where will you be spending Christmas this year? A This year we are breaking with tradition which is hard for me, a creature of tradition...! We normally spend Christmas in Gloucestershire but we are hoping that this time next year we will be in our new home, a barn (complete with a manger of hay) that we are converting and I can imagine never wanting to be away for

Christmas. So this year we are going to Devon for a Christmas beside the sea. I just hope that Father Christmas doesn’t have any problems finding us there... Q And finally, favourite Christmas tradition? A It’s something that my mum has done ever since I can remember. She will light a candle in the window as it starts to get dark on Christmas Eve. The candle is for Mary, to let her know that she is welcome. Whether you are religious or not, that to me is the essence of Christmas; letting people know that they are not alone, shining a light in the darkness.

“We still don’t have a deal and like the political situation, everyone involved is getting increasingly grumpy”

real mum talk...

Telling it Like it is Alexandra Hunter on single parenting at Christmas

I

have always loved Christmas. As soon as summer is over I start Christmas shopping, it’s always done by the start of October, if it isn’t I panic. My loft is now full of unwrapped presents, carefully stored decorations, oodles of wrapping paper and lots of festive treats. I went to Waitrose on Saturday specifically for their Christmas caramelised nuts. Ironically as I write today it’s Halloween, and of course we carved pumpkins with friends but I’m genuinely far more excited by the 30 Christmas cards we made at the weekend. Sebby’s hands coated in brown paint, we created reindeer cards (from the wrong angle they could easily be mistaken for tarantulas, but that’s not the point of a handmade Christmas) and little could’ve made me happier than sewing

on individual bells to each card on Sunday night with a glass of sloe gin. However, as a single parent Christmas is never going to be easy if both the parents are involved in a child’s life. When the relationship between parents is far from amicable it can become almost impossible to navigate and arrange. Last night, upon returning from a glorious day with friends, I spent a hideous few hours composing and rewriting again and again an email about the division of days for Christmas this year to my ex. We’re at loggerheads about what we believe to be fair and have been arguing about it for weeks. It would appear it’s harder to negotiate than Brexit. I was surrounded by screenshots of calendars for this year and next, highlighters, printed out emails and of course a large glass

of red. We still don’t have a deal and like the political situation, everyone involved is getting increasingly grumpy. Of course, one parent misses out each year and this is horrible. Last year Sebby and I had an utterly blissful Christmas with my family and so this year we are without him. My child is 3 and this will be my second Christmas without him. It’s very hard. My Christmas with Seb will be on Christmas Eve and it will have every trimming possible. Father Christmas will come (Sebby did ask how he’ll get into his room as we don’t have a chimney, fair point) and we’ll open presents with breakfast in my bed, the lights will sparkle and my brothers are all making sure they’re back early. Family and being together with Seb is what matters most to all of us. For Christmas Day we’re booked into a fab hotel nearby. My mama will have just had surgery and being somewhere different and grown-up might make being without Seb a little easier. I am naturally optimistic and I do realise how lucky I am to have a beautiful, happy, healthy little boy. At one point a few years ago I was told that might not be possible. Christmas is all about children and as long as mine feels secure, loved and that wonderful mixture of awe and excitement then I know I’ve done the best I possibly can and that he’ll have a super Happy Christmas. If I do find myself without Seb for longer than I’d like then I’m going to Italy with the gorgeous man I saw when we were both buying our children shoes and then found on Tinder at the start of the year. Hohoho. December 2019

he experts recommend that we have one every six months, but who can honestly remember the last time they went for a professional bra fitting? If the thought of stripping off in a dimly lit changing room fills you with dread, a clever new fit-centric lingerie brand might just have the answer. NUDEA is the brainchild of two women on a mission to embrace a more body-positive approach to lingerie – moving away from the overtly sexy, and let’s face it, outdated image of underwear’s past. In a wide size range and a contemporary colour palette, this is comfort and fit-focused lingerie that’s created for real women, with real bodies. The duo behind the brand worked with hundreds of women to develop an innovative measuring system with accurate results. Step inside their virtual fitting room to keep track of your bra size as you lose weight, gain weight, and your cup size climbs up during pregnancy. We love the non-wired ‘Easy Does It’ bralette, which works just as well for those who are expecting as for those who are not. nudea.com

What’s more, Rhodin has started a process of ensuring all workers in the brand’s partner factories are paid a living (rather than a minimum) wage – so the human angle is covered too. Fantastic news for style-savvy parents, because the AW19 collection is as amazing as ever, with printed puffas, plush padded trousers to keep out the cold and knitwear in styles at once boldly contemporary and subtly retro. Add the garlic for the aioli to the dish at the same time. 3 Roast in the oven for 45 minutes or until the potatoes have a crisp crust and are tender inside. 4 Season with salt and pepper. 5 Remove the roasted garlic from the oven and place in a blender jug with the rest of the aioli ingredients. 6 Blend with a stick blender until a thick and creamy sauce that resembles mayonnaise. 7 Season to taste with salt. 8 Garnish the potatoes with a little fresh rosemary, if you like, and serve with the aioli.

rushed is probably my absolute favourite way to serve potatoes; they come out great every time, they are simple to prepare without fuss and, after roasting, they become both crisp and soft at the same time. Here, they are served with a chilli and saffron aioli.

DIRECTIONS 1 Put the sugar, syrup and 5 tablespoons water in a pan and bring to the boil. Stir in the spices and cognac, if using. 2 Pour the hot liquid over the spread in a mixing bowl and stir until it has melted, then leave to cool. 3 Add the flour and bicarbonate of soda and beat with a wooden spoon into a smooth dough. Leave the dough to rest in a cool place until the next day. 4 Preheat the oven to 225°C/425°F/Gas 7 and line a baking sheet with baking parchment. 5 Cut the dough in half and roll out each half thinly on a lightly floured work surface. 6 Cut out shapes with a cookie cutter and move to the lined baking sheet using a dough scraper or spatula. 7 Bake in the middle of the oven for 5 minutes or until golden and crisp. his recipe I found in my grandmother’s little yellowing recipe collection from the 1930s and 40s, but in her recipe the batch was double the size and not as spicy. For a family celebration like Christmas, I think it’s particularly fun to use old family recipes because in a way grandmother Greta, who passed away in the 1960s, is then still present. In the same way, greatgrandmother Hilda’s old linen cloth with the initials HP, since she kept her maiden name Pålsson, now gets the honourable task to act as a proving cloth for the Christmas breads and buns.

confess, any treatment suggesting that it might be the non chemical answer to botox has got my attention. So I was intrigued to visit family wellness and lifestyle club Cloud Twelve in Notting Hill to see if their Signature Holistic Facelift could do anything to turn back time. The treatment harnesses the Holistic Facelift method developed by remedial gymnastics therapist and author of Fascia Engineering Method, Svetlana Afanaseva. Using a specialised massage technique, gentle pressure is applied to the fascia (which is the layer of connective tissue under the skin) with the aim of improving skin tone, elasticity, wrinkles and fine lines. A little bit like going to the gym for your face, regular treatment improves the tone of the fascia and slows down the ageing process. The massage itself is quite deep and my face really feels like it’s had a workout. However, the biphasic peel-off mask applied afterwards is so relaxing I find myself drifting off whilst it works its magic. After one session, I can notice a subtle difference in the tone of my skin and I’ve no doubt that if I kept the massage up I would really see results.

ama of five (soon to be six), Chloe Thurston lives on the south coast of England and is the founder of the blog Uber Kid. She has gained a following on Instagram for her play-themed posts, which share a peek inside her childrens’ imaginative bedrooms. Her interiors style is very much a meeting of Scandiminimalism and colourful maximalism; as beautiful wooden toys, rainbow My Little Ponies and Care Bears explode from every surface in a sort of beautiful chaos. When it comes to celebrating the festive season with her family, Chloe takes a similar approach to decor, dress-up and entertaining. Here, she shares her top tips for partying with little ones.

FESTIVE BEST

Our party dress code is anything Christmassy goes! I am a massive fan of Christmas jumpers, (like this one from The Faraway Gang at KidPix) novelty or smart... outfit (and decoration wise) the more shiny, glittery and sparkly the better.

My go-to party decorations come from Meri Meri, literally a one-stop place for all decorations, festive and sparkly. Garlands and bunting are hung wherever possible, stockings aplenty off every shelf, and as many twinkling lights as I can get my hands on to really get us in the festive spirit. I always include special Christmas crackers for each child at the party table, Christmassy tattoos and woodland set-ups dotted around for the kids to play with.

“I like to leave lots of Christmas photo booth style props in a basket to grab” Literally every surface has a deer, Christmas fairy and a bottle brush tree on it! The tree (mine is from Marks & Spencer) is decorated with cute Meri Meri decorations from Scandiborn that the kids are always welcome to take off and play with and I normally decorate underneath with lots of the soft toys complete with their own party hats and crowns on.

This year we have some Christmas playdough kits from the wonderful Little Munchkins, deliciously scented with chocolate orange, baked apple and mulled wine for the littlest kids, with tree cutters and snowflake stamps. I always bake a massive batch of gingerbread biscuits for the kids to ice, decorate and hang on their tree with ribbons (or eat of course)! And we have a gorgeous reindeer pinata ready for after the party food and then Christmas movies to watch snuggled on the sofa for the evening eating all the treats! December 2019  |  7 1

We normally have a party with adults and kids so I lay a table for a good old fashioned roast for the grown-ups to enjoy during the kids Christmas movie times. My top tip for catering for that amount of people is to use the barbecue for the meat, leaving the oven free for the massive amount of potatoes and vegetables! The children have their own earlier party tea, with sandwiches cut from reindeer and snowflake cutters, strawberry and cream Father Christmasses, and all the carrot sticks, cucumbers and fruit cut up into Pinterest-inspired festive shapes (even if they don’t turn out that Pinterest-worthy when the kids and I arrange them)!

MAG I C TO U C H E S

Every year I always love putting together the advent calendar as a great way of building anticipation for the big day, as well as it being a pretty decoration in itself! We fill our one (Cam Cam from Scandiborn) with just a couple of mini presents (Christmas necklaces, Rockahula hair clips, a letter from Santa) but also activity prompts such as cookie cutters, Christmas decorations on tree decorating day, Christmas crafts, Christmas movie tickets etc. We also have a big stack of Christmas books, including ones from my childhood, that we add to each year and we leave out for all the party guests to read and reminisce over!

ather Christmas has thousands of elves, all helping him get ready for the 25th. We’re juggling a hundred things and trying to create a magical Christmas for the little ones. Add to this the fact that plastic has become the swear word of the decade, what should be a time for peace on earth, suddenly isn’t. But there are some very simple switches that can be made for a plastic free Christmas. Switches that don’t mean we run around like headless turkeys.

Switch to reusable wrapping paper

Ignore the sparkly plastic wrapped paper that’s currently in stores. Instead reuse old wrapping paper or fabric. We collect wrapping paper, ribbon and anything decorative throughout the year to use at Christmas. The presents are then secured with biodegradable tape and recycled twine. If you want your gift to look really special, then invest in a reusable fabric 74  | absolutely-mama.co.uk

wrap, like the ones from The Fabric Wrapping Co (pictured). Inspired by the Japanese art of Furoshiki, they come in all different sizes, including bottle shapes. Alternatively buy brown recycled paper. You can easily make it look festive by decorating it with stamps, like the ones from Skull and Cross Buns (pictured).

Buy recyclable Christmas cards If I manage to send Christmas cards before the last posting date, I always give myself a virtual pat on the back. Just buy ones that are made from uncoated, recycled cardboard. Or for something special, send them a seed card, like the ones I found on Etsy from MadeByMikaLtd. When planted they’ll grow into wildflowers which are great for bees and butterflies.

MadebyMikaLtd, Seed Christmas Cards; from £3.95 each etsy.com Skull and Cross Buns, Christmas Stamp; £8 skullandcrossbuns.com

Reuse your Christmas decorations

Decorations used year after year and brought down from the loft are my favourite. As they sometimes break, each year we buy a couple of new ones to add to the collection. There are lots of plastic free options. Oxfam have a beautiful garland and star decorations made from recycled saris. Mishiu Ferris lazer cut birch wood to make amazing geometric trees. &Keep have lots of felted wool decorations (a biodegradable material), like the snowmen pictured.

Petit Collage Magnectic Doll Dress Up; £12 store.wildandwolf.co.uk

Turn last year’s Christmas cards into labels

All you need for this is a pair of pinking shears, a hole punch and some ribbon or string. Take last year’s Christmas cards and turn them into this year’s present labels.

Don’t be afraid to give second-hand presents

Christmas is an expensive time, so don’t be afraid to have a hunt for preloved presents at your local charity shop, or school’s Christmas fair. I’ve found that they’re great places to buy books, jigsaw puzzles and toys.

Give presents that last

“Don’t be afraid to hunt for preloved presents at your local charity shop”

So many children’s toys break or are discarded quickly. So, invest in a few that will last. Some brands have ditched plastic as a material altogether. Have a look at Plan Toys, Petit Collage and Lanka Kade. They use sustainable materials and manufacturing processes, plus are aesthetically pleasing to have around the home. However, if your child is in need of a big plastic tractor, then Green Toys sell vehicles made from 100% recycled plastic. My son loves them.

Decorate with natural foliage It’s also great fun to bring the outside indoors, decorating the mantelpiece with holly, ivy, pinecones and whatever else you can find on a festive winter walk.

Buy fresh local food to avoid unnecessary plastic

Food is one of the biggest challenges when it comes to having a plastic free Christmas. So, buy fresh fruit and vegetables at local markets as you can take your own packaging. Alternatively, companies December 2019  |  75

PEAK PERFECTION In Whistler, the family friendly activities are as impressive as the inspiring Canadian mountain landscape Wo r d s C L A I R E RU S S E L L

A

fter riding through the treelined tracks in the frozen Canadian backcountry, we emerged into a clearing as smooth and white as a wedding cake. Right in the middle stood three mini snowmobiles, glinting invitingly in the winter sunlight. This complete surprise was, hands down, the highlight of our Canadian adventure for our three boys. Almost unable to believe their luck, they jumped off, raced as quickly as they could to the waiting mini SkiDoos and proceeded to whizz around the clearing at great speed, narrowly avoiding spectating parents and trees. It struck me later; this was the epitome of our Canadian adventure in Whistler. While offering world-class ski facilities – Whistler was host to the 2010 Winter Olympics and boasts over 200 marked trails across neighbouring mountains Whistler and Blackcomb - there is a so much more to Whistler than that. You could, theoretically, ski all day with a

quick pit stop for lunch and make your way back for a quiet evening by the fire. Or in reality, families of all ages are here to make the most of a combination of exhilarating winter sports and other thrills off piste. Ranging from skiing, snow boarding, snow shoeing, snowmobiles, dogsledding, ice skating at Whistler’s Olympic Plaza, the weekly Fire & Ice Show and the CocaCola Tube Park in Winter to hiking trails, bear tours, glacier walks, mountain biking and mini golf in summer. There really is something for everyone all year round. “Oh wow, bear claws!” exclaimed our youngest son as we entered The Penthouse Suite at Pan Pacific Whistler Village Centre. It was indeed a bear claw albeit crafted out of delicious chocolate, caramel and cashew nuts from Whistler’s own Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. Any hotel that welcomes family guests with these cute Whistler teddy bears and a bottle of excellent Canadian red wine for us parents is off to a great start. Pan Pacific’s Penthouse Suite was impressive with three bedrooms, a fullyequipped kitchen, living and dining area

WHERE TO STAY Pan Pacific Whistler Village Centre

“With ski facilities for all abilities, Whistler Blackcomb has the ideal learning terrain” with every room featuring vast windows with views up the snow-clad mountain range. Our overexcited boys explored the suite shouting to each other, “I’ve found another bedroom”, “I’ve found a laundry room” and “I’ve found another TV”. That was until there was a knock at the door and three mini fluffy bathrobes were delivered to the room. And that was it, donning our swim kit, we raced off downstairs to the hotel’s outdoor pool and hot tub. I don’t know if you’ve ever done it before, but sitting in a steaming swimming pool surrounded by snow on the ground

has to be one of the greatest luxuries. With ski facilities for all abilities, Whistler Blackcomb has the ideal learning terrain, and no matter which lift you take up, there’s an easy route down, ideal for that last, gentle run of the day. And, for kids there’s a Treefort and a Magic Castle up the mountain, hidden away just off the main runs. All with the aim of making the business of learning to ski even more fun for little ones. We booked our 9-year-old twins Finlay and Fraser and 6 year-old Rory, into Whistler Kids for three days of lessons followed by three days of ‘Adventure Camp’, which proved to be a fantastic experience for all three of them. Whistler Kids runs from 9am to 3pm so parents can have the option of a full day’s skiing on the mountain, or some time off to relax, as the case may be. At the start of our trip, the lyrics “Head out on the highway, Lookin’ for adventure, And whatever comes our way” were playing on a local radio station as we drove to Whistler from Vancouver along the aptly-named ‘Sea to Sky Highway’. By the end, all agreed that we certainly had an adventure and we most definitely took everything that came our way.

 One of two Pan Pacific properties in Whistler. Its sister property, Pan Pacific Whistler Mountainside, is a ski-in/skiout property located at the base of the Excalibur gondola. This is something I’ve come to appreciate so much more after discovering how very long it takes to get three children dressed up in ski gear and then carry all their equipment for them. Named a Top 10 Resort in Canada in Condé Nast’s 2017 Readers’ Choice Awards, Pan Pacific Whistler Village Centre is a perfect option for families with its outdoor pool and a prime location right in the middle of Whistler Village. panpacific.com/en/hotels-and-resorts/ pp-whistler-village-centre.html

Nita Lake Lodge  Whistler’s only lakeside hotel in Creekside. All suites come with kitchenettes and Nita Lake Lodge’s award-winning spa with mountain view hot tubs, is the dream for easing sore and aching muscles after a hard day’s skiing. nitalakelodge.com

Four Seasons Resort and Residences Whistler  A luxurious option for families with the spacious residences featuring palatial kitchens and dining areas. The Four Seasons also has a ski concierge at the bottom of Blackcomb Mountain where hotel guests can pick up warm, dry boots, skis and poles ready for a great day on the mountain. fourseasons.com/whistler

WHAT TO DO  We spent an adventure-packed afternoon on a family snowmobile tour with The Adventure Group at Cougar Mountain near Whistler. They also run a wide range of outdoor activities in summer. tagwhistler.com  A feat of engineering, a ride in the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola between Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains is thrilling. The PEAK 2 PEAK boasts the world’s longest unsupported lift span in the world of over 3km and there’s even glass-bottomed gondola cars for the very brave. whistler.com/activities/ peak-to-peak-gondola  Whistler also has a vibrant arts and cultural scene including The Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre which explores the history of the First Nations. The architecturally-stunning Audain Art Museum also hosts Family Studio Sundays. slcc.ca • audainartmuseum.com

UK GETAWAY

COTHELSTONE Helen Baron visits a hillside haven in Cornwall’s Polzeath

The Activities

The Village

C

P

olzeath is one of North Cornwall’s premier surf spots, a sweeping, cliffencircled cove with a buzzing village at its heart. The beach is the centre of life here, with a cluster of restaurants and cafes creeping right up to the edge of the sand. People come and go at all hours, enjoying the changing light over the water, exploring the rockpools and stone steps revealed at low tide. The local shops have all you need for a comfortable stay and everything is within a few minutes’ walk of the house where we stayed – a walk that was easily accomplished even with a stroller and small kids.

The House

C

othelstone is a contemporary holiday home that sits on the slopes above the village. The

The Area house has been thoughtfully designed to maximise the spectacular views of the cove, with a huge open-plan living, dining and kitchen space on the first floor along with two terrace-style balconies. Downstairs you’ll find four large, comfortable bedrooms (two double with en suite shower rooms, two twin) and a large family bathroom with bath and walk-in shower. The house has a welcome feeling of openness – it’s so spacious, airy and light – while the decor tips its hat to maritime themes in a fresh, friendly and pleasingly modern way.

P

olzeath is perfectly situated for a little exploring. Five minutes’ drive south is the tiny but beautiful Rock, with beautiful views over the Camel Estuary and a smattering of renowned restaurants. Ten minutes’ further down the road you’ll find the town of Wadebridge, a warren of narrow lanes full of independent boutiques and our top local tip: the Relish deli and Rising Ground coffee roastery. The coffee was good enough that we popped there most mornings before journeying to one of the many picture-perfect beaches or fishing. villages further along the coast.

othelstone’s wellmaintained garden comes complete with al fresco dining furniture and a barbecue, while on overcast days there’s table football and a DVD library inside the house. But if you can tear yourself away, the main draw in Polzeath proper is the surf, which is known for consistent, gentle rolling waves that offer fun for beginners and veterans alike. We grabbed a lesson with George’s Surf School, widely regarded as one of the top ten schools in the world. Our little ones, meanwhile, loved roaming the beach in search of shells and ‘treasure’ before decamping to one of the many local cafes for a warming hot chocolate.

Cothelstone is available from £1,050 per week; latitude50.co.uk

Parenting and medical professionals, as well as leading entrepreneurs, answer some of your most pressing questions

Q Why choose goat milkbased Follow on formula? A Goat milk based Follow on can be used exactly the same way as its cow’s milk equivalent and is just as safe and suitable for your baby. We chose goat milk over cow’s milk as a base for our Follow on formula because of its reputation as a soft and gentle milk, and at Nannycare we know how to handle it carefully to ensure there is no aroma, and a delicate, mild and creamy taste that babies love. There are similarities between goat milk and cow’s milk, but also some differences in the protein and fat. We believe goat milk to be particularly suitable as a high quality protein base in our formula, providing essential fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and minimising unnecessary ingredients that could place a burden on the baby’s metabolism. In the event of minor feeding issues or baby not settling on cow’s milk formula, it may be worth trying goat milk Follow on formula as an alternative* Nannycare is now available in selected supermarkets, many branches of Boots and on Boots.com. Important notice: Breastfeeding is best for your baby and should continue for as long as possible. Nannycare Follow on milk is for babies over 6 months, as part of a varied weaning diet. It should not be used as a breastmilk substitute before this age and should be used on the advice of a healthcare professional. *Always refer to a healthcare professional before switching. Goat milk formula should not be given to babies with cow’s milk protein allergy unless directed by a healthcare professional.

Heather MORRIS

Heather Morris is a Registered General Nurse and State Certified Midwife. She is mum to Freddy, Harry, and Jack. metanium.co.uk Q My son is 11 months old and has developed nappy rash for the fi rst time, I thought it only affected younger babies? A You’re not alone in thinking this, many parents assume that babies only get nappy rash when they’re tiny and needing their nappy changed up to ten times a day. But it is actually quite rare in newborns and the peak time for little ones developing a sore

bum is 9-12 months. This may be because weaning and changes in diet usually take place at this sort of age, and can lead to runny poos or diarrhoea. These irritants can cause redness and irritation to your baby’s delicate skin. Try to change wet or soiled nappies as soon as possible (including at night). Clean the area carefully using plain water or wipes that are fragrance and alcohol free. Dry gently by patting the skin and avoid rubbing. Avoid using soap or talcum powder. Whenever possible leave your son’s nappy off, so his skin can ‘breathe’. You may need lots of towels available if you do this, depending on how mobile he is! Use a barrier ointment, such as Metanium, as they are generally more effective than creams and lotions, and provide a better moisture barrier for the skin.

Jessica MEADE

Jessica Meade is a mum of two young children. She joined NatureBond in 2018 and works in Sales and Marketing. uk.naturebondglobal.com Q I’ve seen a lot about silicone pumps lately. What do they do, and what is the best way to incorporate one in my feeding journey? A A silicone pump has multiple uses. Most commonly, it is used to collect milk leaking while nursing, but it can also be used to remedy a clogged duct! Typically when nursing, the opposite breast will leak milk. This milk usually ends up going to waste in a nursing pad or on your clothing. Silicone pumps were created to help save this precious liquid gold. The collected milk can be used to build a freezer stash or donated to a milk bank. To use, simply flip the flap back while squeezing the bulb and center over

your nipple. Release the flap and bulb and watch the milk begin to collect. To experience a strong suction, squeeze closer to the top of the bulb during application. If you desire a gentler suction, squeeze lower on the bulb. Silicone pumps offer a variety of benefits. They are economical, quiet, and extremely portable, allowing mums to collect milk anywhere conveniently! Only the NatureBond silicone pump comes with everything you need to start building your stash. The NatureBond Premium Pack includes a stopper, dust cover, carrying bag, and a pump strap, so there will be no more crying over spilt milk! The pump strap is a new addition to the NatureBond pump. While we are confident in the suction of our pump, many babies have “happy feet” and can kick off the pump. We listened to our mums and came up with the pump strap solution. ow do you get a baby to sleep through the night? The million dollar question. New parents spend hours Googling sleep training techniques and investing in products that could magically transform their night. Of course the simple answer is that each child gets there in their own time. However, there are some products that are a musthave to help you along your way and a ‘cocoon’ or ‘nest’ is one of them. The idea behind it is that it makes your baby feel secure and cosy, like in the womb. For both my babies this has been a life-saver. It means you have a mobile sleeping environment for your baby that is familiar to them, whether you are at home (fits Snuzpod,

Next2Me cribs), at the grandparents’, or just moving from room to room. It also allows you to co-sleep and feel comforted that they are safe. What’s great about the Babymoov Doomoo is that it has 3D breathable mesh in the head area so you can rest assured, plus it is made with organic cotton that is chemical free and sensitive to allergies. Little one has never been so comfortable. This pod is suitable from birth to 8 months as it is extendable at the bottom, to allow your baby to grow with it. Cheaper than its competitors in the market (and just as good), this is definitely a product worth investing in.  £89.99 babymoov.co.uk

e don’t live close to family, so when our first baby arrived earlier this year we knew that we’d need a reliable travel cot. The Nuna Oxford Collection Sena Aire has been an invaluable addition to our parenting kit. With a clever zig-zag design, it claims to be the only travel cot on the market that folds with one hand and it really does take seconds to put up and down. All you have to do is fold the legs out and secure the mattress with the Velcro strips, making it much less fiddly than other models. Packing it away took slightly more practice (you fold the mattress around the frame and store in a duffle bag) but now we’ve got the hang of it, it’s simple. It’s slightly heavier than other models, but we really like that as it feels a lot more sturdy and secure. It’s also very stylish (with smart grey herringbone fabric) and every design detail has been carefully thought out. Padded edges prevent little fingers from getting trapped, and the mezzanine level keeps baby draft-proof and makes it easy to reach in for night-time feeds. Suitable for newborn up to 3-years old, there’s plenty of space inside and our daughter sleeps really well in it. It also doubles as a play space, which in our opinion makes it a worthwhile long-term purchase. We’d definitely recommend it if you’ve got as many family visits as us over the festive period!  £180, johnlewis.com
