A

wards abound this month. For one thing, the ever-wonderful Tabernacle, Powis Square’s enduring landmark, is a finalist in the London Lifestyle Awards’ Best Live Music Venue category. That’s some achivement and it’s down to Christopher Scholey and his team’s endless enthusiasm and determination to keep the Tabernacle’s flag flying in the face of a variety of setbacks. The building’s been closed down, bankrupted and damaged over the past 50 years – but still it continues to attract folk of all ages from near and far with its varied programme of events, activites and performances. It’s a sort of secular equivalent of the church it once was. So it’s congratulations to them, and also to lovely local boutiques Love KR (run single-handedly by the widely popular Paula Fitzpatrick, dressing the women of Kensal Rise) and Dolci Follie lingerie (another female-run business), both of whom have been nominated in the prestigious Drapers Fashion Awards. Let’s hope they win. This month’s issue has a fashion theme, celebrating London Fashion Week, and we’re very proud of our beautiful Portobello fashion story, shot entirely on location in the area. We hope you enjoy it.

What’s On LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL 14 TO 23 SEPTEMBER

V&A

The V&A plays host to an exciting selection of exhibitions, installations, talks and activities as part of the London Design Festival 2012. Highlights include Prism by Keiichi Matsuda, an alternative and thought-provoking view of London displayed in the usually closed-off upper cupula of the museum. Keiichi’s installation resembles a multi-coloured iceberg acting as a vehicle for the exploration of the virtual life of our city and the often disjointed relationship we have to the data that controls our lives. The London Design Festival at the V&A is shaping up as the place to be this September.

With a desire to draw upon everyday details which we often overlook, Japanese photographer Daido Moriyama’s exhibited shots track an intricate exploration of tights and lips. The simplicity of the images, however, is beautifully striking making the exhibition a must see. Zadie Smith’s new novel, NW (Hamish Hamilton £18.99), is set – again – on Smith’s home turf of north west London and revisits many of the themes raised (London’s tribes, belonging, growing up) in her hugely successful debut White Teeth, in Smith’s characteristic style – precise, insightful, elegant. Smith has pledged her support to the unstoppable Save Kensal Rise Library campaign – and in NW this is where Natalie (studious estate kid-turned lawyer) does her homework. Don’t miss Zadie Smith talking about the book at the Tabernacle’s Bookslam on 4 September. bookslam.com 17

New voice Singer/songwriter Natalie Duncan has just released her first album and is destined for stardom. Esther Smith catches up with her

N

ottingham born and Notting Hill-based singer and songwriter Natalie Duncan, describes her sound as ‘soulful’ and ‘jazzy’ with a ‘bit of blues.’ You’d be forgiven for thinking that’s a textbook description for the music of the last few years’ bright young things. However, she’s better than that. Her musical inspirations include Bob Dylan, Elliot Smith, Pink Floyd, - her ‘favourite band’ - Lauryn Hill and Aretha Franklin. This varied mix, married with her self-taught piano playing talents and smooth vocals, combine to make Duncan’s newly released Grammy winning and Joe Henry produced - album, Devil in Me, truly unique. Praise such as this, Natalie would never openly lay on herself. She seems to possess a modest and endearingly downto-earth quality, treading lightly with her post album release

expectations: she ‘might’ be on Jools Holland in September and this time next year she will ‘hopefully’ be about to release her second album with Decca. It is strikingly clear that she would ‘like to still be doing music whatever happens.’ Duncan’s songs are an outlet for honest expression. Her artistry, she says, ‘has meaning to it. It’s not just commercial, image based, or trivial.’ She wants people to listen to the lyrics which are often about ‘darker subjects’. However, Duncan does not appear overly serious; she goes on to sarcastically jibe about the ‘all cheery’ nature of her songs. The conversation moves to collaborations. Having worked with Goldie and Magnetic Man, Natalie’s sights are now fi rmly set on a coupling with singer/ songwriter James Blake. She is defi nitely not shy about this;

‘that’s who I want to collaborate with. Put that in capitals.’ she says. Well, JAMES BLAKE, you’re a wanted man. The musician favours an organic writing process, songs are formed from ‘an idea that’s come to me while I’m out.’ Furthermore, Natalie has placed herself in the middle of Notting Hill’s beating heart. The flat she found here, ‘was the nicest place in London. It wasn’t a conscious decision to move here but it’s lovely.’ Portobello Road is a favourite spot and she is ‘always’ at The Elgin, Natalie is certainly living like a local. Watch her perform at The Elgin on 19th September or head to her residency at The Notting Hill Arts Club from 25th September. Catch her locally while you can. Natalie Duncan’s debut album ‘Devil In Me’ is out now, on Verve Records.

Lingerie boutique Dolci Follie has just been nominated for a Drapers Fashion Award. Here founder Simona Walters reveals the secrets of her success... We’ve heard that you are good with numbers, how did you go from maths to luxury lingerie? I was an accountant in Italy then moved to the UK in 1998 to study English and just stayed on. With Dolci Follie I can combine my interest in business and my personal passion for lingerie. Do you have any favourite upand-coming lingerie trends? I’ve just come back from the Paris and New York trade shows for SS13 collections and one thing that stood out are the exciting, fresh colours that designers are using – not just the classic black and nude. What are your favourite lingerie brands? For comfort, I find Chantal Thomass really delivers; her pieces are always so pretty and so elegant, and not a strap or seam that digs in anywhere. For seduction, it has to be Christies or R. Crescentini – of course the Italians do it best. Some of our most breathtaking pieces this season are from a relatively new designer, I.D. Sarrieri. The pieces are beautifully made, and adorned with sparkling Swarovski crystals. Why did you decide on Notting Hill for your boutique? I thought long and hard about where to open the first boutique, and decided early on that the centre of town was not attractive to me – at Dolci Follie, customer service is paramount to us; we enjoy getting to know our customers and what they love about lingerie, and so I wanted to open somewhere with more of a settled community feel. We feel so lucky that the area we are in has

26

a ‘village’ feel about it; a diverse, dynamic community in the heart of London. What is the biggest misconception about lingerie? I think a lot of women can underestimate the importance of lingerie – what you wear under your clothes is just as important as the clothes themselves. Not only can it change your silhouette, but when you’re wearing beautiful lingerie it makes you feel instantly more confident, even if you’re the only person who knows you’re wearing it. We are all trained in specialist bra fitting at Dolci Follie, so we are always there to offer advice . Who did you turn to for advice when you started? My business partner is my husband, who believed in my business idea and backed me up. However, on reflection, I think he was probably hoping to be more involved and ‘hands on’ during the photo shoots with lingerie models. What do you like to do in Notting Hill when you aren’t hard at work? My husband and I often go to Pizza East. After a day at work we love relaxing in a place where the staff are so nice and smiling. What excites you about lingerie? It is such an empowering garment for a woman to make her feel unique, regardless of age, size and shape. My favourite movie scene is when Sophia Loren is taking off her stockings in front of an amused Marcello Mastroianni. dolcifollie.co.uk

LONDON FASHION WEEK FOCUS:

The sartorial extravaganza that is London Fashion Week will be upon us this month. Katie Randall chats to three participating designers ahead of the frenzy

EMMA J SHIPLEY LUXURY PRINTS

Q: You graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2011, what was studying in Kensington like? A: I really loved the Royal College and the environment in Kensington. It was built there originally because of the proximity to the museums and galleries, so students would have access to the huge archive of research material, art and design, exhibitions – and it’s still such an inspiring place to be.

Q: How does art influence your fashion work? A: All my designs start with ideas and then drawings done by hand in pencil, which form the print. I take inspiration from fine artists like Henri Rousseau, John James Audubon and MC Escher. I think of each drawing as artwork, which might take two or three weeks. I then translate these on to silk or cashmere and hope that the original essence and soul of the drawings is retained. emmajshipley.com

Q: How do you get into the right headspace to design for each new season? A: Ideas will unveil themselves in my head. I’ll then spend hours and hours, sometimes in excess of 100 hours per season, researching and developing. I spend a lot of time in libraries, galleries, and walking around unique places of architecture. I do not consider myself a trend-led designer that looks to what my contemporaries are doing. Q: We’ve heard you visit Notting Hill for inspiration? A: I love the antique markets. I’m enthralled by objects of history. I also love looking at antique lace patterns, the tailoring in old officer’s uniforms and buttons and embellishments. The lace-trimmed collar on my AW12 neckerchief blouse (right) is a blend of old-world with modern design. Necklines are a constant source of fascination for me, I really like the high Victorianinspired neckline. corrienielsen.com

MARIA GRACHVOGEL SELF-TAUGHT MAVERICK

Q: You are a self-taught designer, both in design and pattern-making. What fi rst drew you to fashion? A: My fascination with fashion started around eight years old. I remember taking out those wonderful coffee-table Vogue books from the school library almost on permanent loan and literally examining every detail in the photos, completely bewitched by the beauty and craft of fashion. I started to cut and make clothes myself around the age of 12 and I then became fascinated by how clothing can completely transform and empower. Q: Can you reveal your buzzwords that have inspired the up-coming SS’13 collection? A: This season my woman is lean, modern and cool. The lines are much cleaner and more architectural both in the cutting techniques and through the print. I am also playing with sculptural pleats and contrasting textures. mariagrachvogel.com 29

BUNDLE MACLAREN

BUNDLE MACLAREN

Bundle’s designs are rather ravishing. It is with a refreshingly fun twist that she approaches her creative discipline and creates show stopping eccentric headpieces. Having designed 12 bespoke hats for the Royal Wedding earlier this year, Bundle now unveils her new Olympia collection. If you’re looking for a piece to complement a specific outfit and can’t fi nd a hat in the range to match, Bundle can synchronise almost all of her designs with the colour you require and even provides a bespoke service to cater for your needs. After completing an apprenticeship under renowned milliner Gina Foster, prior to training with Noel Stewart at

THE HAT GALLERY

JESS COLLETT

Kensington and Chelsea College, Bundle’s unique design flair has certainly seen some impressive nurturing. Despite Bundle’s talents, these delightful hats don’t come with the high price tag that you may expect, prices starting from a ludicrously cheap £35. Coupling cool and chic, these fun and vibrant pieces are the perfect example of modern millinery at its fi nest. bundlemaclaren.co.uk 07977 552 510

JESS COLLETT

Jess’s beautiful bespoke creations hark after a time long ago, when mass-production was as rare as one-off pieces are today. Whether you’re looking for the perfect accompaniment to a summer race

day dress, a unique stand-out piece for a party or something for your everyday wardrobe, Miss Collett is the modern fairy godmother, with a fi rm belief that ‘there is a hat for everyone.’ For Jess, it is a ‘wonderful process to be able to create the perfect hat for somebody. To give them confidence and to make them feel good, as well as giving them an elegant silhouette.’ After training at Kensington and Chelsea college, Jess keeps it local in her Portobello Road atelier, working closely with clients to create the perfect communion between hat, personality and outfit. From initial consultation to fi nished design, Jess takes approximately four weeks to work on a creation to suit your requirements. Her new venture ‘The Candy Milliner’, aims

MISA HARADA

If it’s artistic credentials you’re after, Harada certainty has them. Having graduated from the Royal College of Art, Harada’s collections first drew attention on the catwalks of Paris Fashion Week. Since then, she has worked for designers including Katherine Hamnett and Thierry Mugler as well as collaborating and creating one-off pieces with Hermes, Missoni, Bora Aksu and Reem. Given her repertoire, it’s hardly surprisingly a celebrity following

has blossomed around her designs, with Britney Spears, The Scissor Sisters, Mickey Rourke and Jennifer Aniston all wanting their own statement pieces. The hats themselves are splendid. Traditional but with a contemporary edge, Misa’s beautiful fabrics and couture millinery techniques embody a timeless elegance that oozes luxury. misaharada.com; 020 7229 8565 28 Chepstow Corner W2

THE HAT GALLERY

The Hat Gallery plays perfect host to a selection of millinery labels, meaning you can choose your perfect piece from a range of designers, all in one place. The gallery, with shops in

Amsterdam and Dusseldorf as well as London, is a millinery success story as it showcases the crossing of conceptual ideas with great examples of high craftsmanship and design. If there’s a hat-shaped gap in your wardrobe, you’re bound to fi nd something to fi ll the space from the gallery’s eclectic array, which includes designs from Celine Robert, Philip Treacy and Stephen Jones. If your hat collection is in need of a sprucing up, a new service at the gallery, Hat Hospital, could come to your rescue. Free consultation is on hand if your hat requires some emergency care. hat-gallery.co.uk 020 7734 9231 32-34 Earl’s Court Road, W8 43

JUMP UP

Tamsin Greig’s quirky look and warm manner are instantly likeable. Pendle Harte meets her to talk about comedy, celebrity and Matt Le Blanc

T

amsin Greig has a lovely voice. She has a particular way of enunciating everything perfectly, giving every syllable its due clarity with not a whiff of sloppiness, and not a trace of Kilburn. Because that’s where she’s from, not at all far from where she now lives in NW10. It’s a proper actor’s voice, lyrical and enthusiastic, and it has the added complexity of making her sound slightly and a bit disarmingly as though she could be laughing at you. Though quickly I decide that she’s not. She also looks amazing, cropped hair, the memorable pointy, expressive face and supremely toned and tanned limbs, and over the past few years she has become an increasingly familiar face on television (Black Books, Green Wing, Episodes) as well as on stage (Much Ado About Nothing, The Little Dog Laughed, Gethsemane) and, of course, The Archers (that voice again). We are at the Royal Court, where Greig is in rehearsal for Jumpy, last year’s huge success, now transferring to the West End. It’s a play about motherhood and ageing, themes that resound in Greig’s own life (she has three children, aged seven, 12 and 13 so not quite old

enough to resemble the teenager in the play). ‘It’s a fantastic play,’ she enthuses. ‘There’s a lot of stuff brewing in it, about women of a particular age.’ Roles about parenting are interesting for Greig, who freely admits to feeling as out of her depth with the task as anyone, on occasion – ‘how can you be a parent when you’re still acting like a teenager and inside you still feel like an idiot child?’ Greig insists there’s no difference between being funny and being a serious actor, though she’s unusual in being able to do both, together and separately. ‘I don’t think you can take the two apart. Life’s really funny. You can tell a tale that’s really straightforward but if you really look at it, it’s insane. It’s laughable, what happens to us. Isn’t it?’ Is it? She launches into a story about her Oyster card not working, and a man from London Transport telling her off in a cross, shouty way for having too much clutter in her purse ‘and I could have got really angry but I turned into a gibbering child, and I think he was funny and my reaction was funny, and I think it’s the clash of our responses to things that makes life so interesting.’ Seeing the funny side of any given situation must be what makes Greig’s comedy work – there’s something about 43

Tamsin Greigs.indd 43

her face and her baffled expression that’s highly comic. Though she claims never to have set out to make people laugh. ‘My dad had a very childish sense of humour and he was an older dad, so I didn’t really know how to talk to him and he certainly didn’t know how to talk to me, so I learned to muck about with him in a foolish way because it was the only overlap really.’ Greig always wanted to be an actor; or rather she always knew that there was ‘nothing else I could do, so I was always going to try, and that’s what I’m still doing,’ she says, modestly (this from a woman with a Laurence Olivier Best Actress Award). Was there a pivotal moment when her career really took off? ‘I wonder if it’s yet to come. I hope I’ll notice it,’ she jokes, claiming that her career (‘anyway, what are careers?’) started on a very slow burn after she graduated in Drama from Birmingham university, ‘a bit like the opening sequence of Laurence of Arabia’. And now there’s the issue of celebrity, which she doesn’t like at all, and finds to be more of a burden than anything else. ‘It’s a bit like being on safari,’ she says, mystifyingly. ‘You’re in the car, but the jeep is open, you’re surrounded by life in all its vibrancy, but you have to make sure you have a good tour guide because it can become unbalanced.’ Greig became a public figure for charity Tearfund, because, however she feels about celebrity, ‘it’s there, so how can it be used in a creative way? I thought, if people are more likely to read a story about Tearfund because of my mug then let’s use it.’ Also on the subject of celebrity, there’s Matt Le Blanc, Greig’s co-star in recent TV series Episodes. More than any other question, she is asked what it’s like to kiss him. Why? The baffled face again.

‘I ask myself the same question. But isn’t it brilliant that there’s such a legacy, that he’s so brilliant and yet so real?’ Episodes is very entertaining, I say. ‘Good!’ says Greig, and again, she’s so enthusiastic that for a moment I wonder whether she’s laughing at me, or maybe she can’t bear the show. But no, it’s that effusiveness, coupled with the slow enunciation that leaves you not quite sure. ‘I think it’s a lovely show!’ She liked it as soon as she saw the script, by David Crane (Friends) and Jeffrey Klarick (Mad About You), praising especially the American writers for writing convincingly for British voices. In the show Greig and Stephen Mangan are very funny together and you get the sense that they must actually be friends too. ‘Yes, I don’t think it would be possible to create that sort of truth on screen if you didn’t enjoy one another,’ she says. She’s enormously gushy about him. ‘He’s got a great face; there are moments when you look into his eyes and the whole universe is there. It’s beautiful what he does with his face. Heartbreaking! Also, he’s a Tottenham supporter and so’s my husband, so my two husbands go off to matches together.’ Greig and Mangan worked together on Green Wing, of course, and it was the lengthy – and these days unheard of – three month rehearsal periods before each series that allowed them, and the other actors, to develop their working relationships and really, they’re still using that history. Will there be another series of Episodes? Nobody knows. The show is currently screening in the US and as anyone who watched it will know, the world of TV will make its own decisions. People are always talking about the plight of the female actor over the age of, say, 40, and how the work dries up overnight – but not for Greig. She’s highly in demand and scheduling her work is difficult (listeners to the Archers will notice that her character Debbie Aldridge is mostly away in Hungary). Now she’s in Jumpy until November, and doesn’t know what’s next. ‘That’s the fantastic thing about this job, you never know. It’s like not knowing what your Christmas presents are… and then an orange turns up. You live with great hope.’ With a strong work ethic inherited from her parents (‘the practicalities! There are bills to pay. I was brought up to make sure there’s money coming in and not to live on the never never. My parents were horrified when I got a mortgage,’) and despite a claim that she gets very nervous on stage, Greig’s career continues to be on the up. Expect to see more of her. Jumpy by April de Angelis is at the Duke of York’s Theatre until 3 November.

DJ SARA COX: ‘I’m probably calmer at work, with slightly better hair.’ work, with slightly better hair.’

HOME & AWAY A new exhibition by photographer Emma Harpin focuses on the multiple identities of working mothers PHOTOGRAPHS BY EMMA HARPIN WORDS BY LINDSAY BAKER

W

hen a working mother walks out of her front door to go to work, she must transform herself. She is not just a multi-tasker, she is a juggler of dual identities, and every day she must shift seamlessly in and out of her twin roles. It’s no mean feat, which is why those who succeed at it – or even make a good attempt - are inspiring. Emma Harpin’s fascinating series of photographs, some of which are shown here, show us a glimpse this metamorphosis, or as Emma (a working mum of three herself) puts it: ‘the day-to-day reality of the juggling act’. Over the past year, she photographed working mums, capturing each one at work and then again at

home with their children. Many of the subjects live in or around Notting Hill, and work in a wide variety of jobs – among others, an advertising director, a paramedic, a circus clown, a landscape gardener, a television executive, a celebrity DJ. Between the images of home and work there is a perceptible shift in mood, and in some cases the subject’s demeanour and appearance also transforms. ‘I wanted to capture that sense of contrast and how we use our appearance,’ says the KensalRise-based photographer, who has worked for the Independent on Sunday, the Observer and Marie Claire. ‘I’m interested in the idea of how we send ourselves out there to work whereas at home there’s less

vanity, there’s more softness in our appearance.’ One of the subjects, television presenter and Radio 2 DJ Sara Cox, admits: ‘I’m probably calmer at work, with slightly better hair.’ And a lot has changed in her sense of self since becoming a mother, she says: ‘I’ve grown up. I’m no longer number one. I’m number five, sometimes number six if you count the dog!’ And ‘work mode’ and ‘mummy mode’ are not always what you imagine they might be. Mothering is not all about being soft, nor work exclusively about being hard-nosed. Advertising agency director Madeleine Sanderson says: ‘My working role involves me looking after and nurturing people and my home role involves a great deal of negotiating and bribery!’ 49

WORKING MOTHERS DPS_v2.indd 49

28/08/2012 18:09

ADVERTISING AGENCY DIRECTOR MADELEINE SANDERSON: ‘If I come home in a bad mood due to work, it is very soon forgotten. Children are great levellers.’

None of the women claim it is easy but most have found ways to manage their full lives effectively. As TV executive Lisa Edwards advises: ‘Make sure you feel you are wholly present when you are with your children. Move away from the BlackBerry!’ And all of them emphasise how fortunate they feel. ‘If it all feels too much sometimes,’ says Lisa, ‘a cuddle and a giggle with the kids usually puts it all in perspective.’ Most of those photographed have found a balance in their lives that they can live with. As Emma puts it: ‘I wanted to show that there are good role models for girls – and boys. I think it’s important for children to see

mothers as figures who work outside the home, and that they are also finding some balance.’ And although her photos are a celebration of heroic working mums, Emma acknowledges that a constant shifting of roles is not for everyone. ‘I would never criticise anyone for making the choice to stay at home - I took a full year off work when I had my first child, it was totally all-consuming, and for some mothers that feeling just lasts longer. The main thing I learnt from this project is not to judge people. I wanted to show how everyone’s circumstances are different – you can’t put everyone in the same box.’

Working Mothers by Emma Harpin runs at 12 Bourlet Close W1 from 18 to 29 September by appointment. emmaharpinphoto.co.uk

Juliet Kinsman’s quest for health and happiness takes her to W10’s Frame Hip, health-boosting and a hoot: how I’d describe the unique classes in this new Queens Park studio. Pip and Joan are the ex-ad industry gals who set up Frame in two railway arches in East London in 2009. They soon had folks more familiar with shaking their booty on a dancefloor in the wee small hours than strutting their stuff in a body-toning studio. Having made exercise-loving proselytes of the hard-living cool kids of Shoreditch, Frame moved on to getting this Kensal Green mother to haul her derrière over to try pilates. ‘The teachers are chosen because of their ability to get you to work super hard without you even realising it – and the music also helps,’ says Pip. ‘If you’re someone who loves to sweat it out, then Frame Camp, which involves interval training on the treadmill followed by a choreographed weights section, is the class for you. You’ll work bloody hard but after 30 minutes you’re done so can enjoy the rest of your evening without feeling guilty about your plate of pasta, or glass of wine.’ moveyourframe.com; Juliet Kinsman blogs at park-life.org

Sculpt Your Body Slim in Six Weeks Louise Parker and her dedicated team are ready to bust your body into shape for spring

THE INTENSIVE PERSONAL TRAINING PROGRAMME was devised by celebrity trainer Louise Parker over 12 years ago and has since changed the body shape of hundreds of individuals. Her experience ranges from helping clients recover from long-term obesity, to taking care of some of the most beautiful bodies in the world. The unique programme combines six hours a week of her exercise method, alongside a rigorous dietary overhaul, for a six-week period. “Each week we train you in four 90-minute sessions in the comfort of your own home – bringing the gym to you and saving precious time,” says Louise. “Some clients choose to do three 90-minute sessions over an eight-week period and the results are still exceptional.” The Intensive employs exercise and diet methods that radically shift body fat and totally re-sculpt the body, without compromising metabolism. “It’s so important to teach our clients how to boost their metabolism so that once they have lost the weight they can easily keep it off,” she notes. “So many diets will get the weight off but your metabolism will come to a grinding halt or they are just not sustainable.” The programme’s emphasis on resistance work and an intelligent eating plan ensure the results that clients achieve are long lasting and, most of all, easy to maintain. “No aspect of what we do is extreme,”

she explains. “Every element of the plan is sensible, researched and proven to work. But what we do is put it all together to create massive transformations in our clients’ bodies and lifestyles. “My team are world class and without doubt some of the best in the country. Most come from a Sports Science background and we have two Olympic athletes amongst us. We all share a friendly, no-nonsense approach and between us we offer an unrivalled service to our clients. I’m hugely proud to have such a talented and committed team behind me.”

with, and what has to be done to return you to your former glory.” Louise Parker designs each programme with one of her team before the programme commences, based on the individual’s requirements and deadlines. A rigid, yet balanced food plan is devised, ensuring optimal results. Louise personally monitors your diet diary on a daily basis to ensure you are on the right track and that you get all the support and motivation you need to succeed. In six weeks, you will emerge looking better than you thought you ever could. What Louise Parker does isn’t gimmicky, it is instead an intelligent combination of three factors – nutrition, training and lifestyle – delivered in just the right combination. “Providing you have made the decision to change and are willing to let us guide you,” she asserts, “You simply cannot fail – clients routinely drop two dress sizes on the Intensive.” There are many bespoke programmes available, and following a telephone consultation, Louise will advise a suitable programme and schedule to suit any objective, lifestyle and budget. Louise asks that new clients commit to a minimum of three hours per week to ensure that they achieve amazing results.

You simply cannot fail clients routinely drop two dress sizes on the Intensive Louise Parker believes anyone can have a fantastic body – regardless of age, body type and starting point: “By following my method, you really will be blown away by how you can change your body shape, overall fitness and exceed your own expectations.” Her programme is suitable for anyone wanting exceptional results, in record time. The Intensive is hugely popular with clients needing to be what she calls ‘red-carpet ready’ – whether that’s for a wedding, new job-role or even the school run. “I love helping post-natal mums,” she explains. “Since I had my daughters in quick succession, I fully understand the challenges new mothers are faced

YOGA TEACHER FROM PORTOBELLO Shakti Ananda (38, real name Annabel) used to work in fashion PR. But after reading Eckhart Tolle’s The Power of Now, she had an ‘A-ha’ moment and gave it up. After completing her TTC at the Sivananda Centre in Madurai, she’s now a fully accredited yoga teacher. She’s also a Reiki Master and Lightworker. Her mission, aside from becoming enlightened in this lifetime, is to heal those around her and help humanity in its transition from fear to love. 7 am Wake up crying. Dream yet again of being abandoned in playground by my mother when I was five. 7.16 am Ring Colin, my shaman, to ask if there’s any bodywork I can do to help the process of healing from playground abandonment. He doesn’t pick up. 7.28 am Do one hour self-regression in which I return to childhood and comfort my five year-old self, telling her that everything is ok. Mummy will be back soon. 8.41 am Do some pigeon poses which are good for releasing emotions trapped in buttocks. Have another cry. 10.12 am Make notes for the screenplay I’m developing about a Hatha yoga teacher in west London trying to maintain a spiritual practice while being surrounded by Low Vibrationals. 11.26 am Go to Coffee Plant to continue writing. Overhear a woman discussing her new novel about an Ashtanga teacher living in west London. When I point out that it’s a karmic black point to steal other people’s ideas, she just laughs. Clearly another Low Vibrational masquerading as a High Vibrational. 12.59 pm See a crow on way home. My power animal is trying to communicate with me. 1.25 pm Log onto Shamanicjourney.com and discover that the crow is a deeply spiritual creature with the ability to unite the light and the dark. Being very adaptable it can survive in almost any situation, which makes sense that I should have one as my power animal. West London can be pretty tough at times. 2.04 pm Meditate on my power animal and have a vision of crows pecking at a loaf of bread. Powerful stuff! 3.28 pm Feeling very drained. Justin, who’s moved in upstairs, has just had broadband installed and it’s causing meltdown in my electromagnetic field. Wrap a towel around my head to minimize the harmful positive ions and balance a rose quartz crystal on my Ajna chakra for 20 minutes. 4.29 pm Still feeling drained. Go into garden and ground myself by lying face down to reconnect with Mother Earth. 6.02 pm Head off to Darshan with Guru Darren at Myyoga in Primrose Hill. Really need it after the day I’ve had.

LET IT FLOW

Hair extensions don’t have to be damaging, or fake-looking. Leah Day experiments Photography: George Ramsay

Leah’s hair was wash and conditioned with Moroccan Oil Moisture Repair shampoo and conditioner. This shampoo and conditioner restores elasticity, moisture and manageability. Floria added a drop of Moroccan oil, Oil Treatment to Leah’s hair before blowdrying. Leah’s hair was then cornrowed into two horizontal rows across the crown. Using a weave needle and light brown thread, Floria stitched Charlote Mensah’s reusable Bespoke (colour 30) hair, which was the perfect colour match to Leah’s natural hair horizontally onto the cornrows.

A

ddicted as I am to my clipin hair extensions, I still crave a more longer-lasting solution to my rather arduous hair care routine. I have of course, fantasised about having extensions put in. On investigation, it seems that any woman and some men (Lenny Kravitz, no less) with a beautiful glossy mane of hair has succumbed to the lure of the fake. But the reason I had never taken the plunge until now, was the bad press that glue-in and bonding extensions receive. Much as I wanted to join the ranks of the beautiful folks and give an instant boost of vitality to my appearance, I did not want to run the risk of ending up with bald patches, a la Christina Aguilera. I knew that weaving would be a far kinder approach, but with my very European hair I thought it wouldn’t work for me.

How wrong I was. The Hair Lounge is reputedly west London’s best Afro Caribbean hairdresser, with a celebrity clientele to boot. It is not the biggest of salons, but the craftsmanship of the team employed by Charlotte Mensah, are the reason why people travel far and wide (America, Africa, Europe and further) to have their hair done by the best in the business. Charlotte has handpicked a team that specialise sin bringing the handiwork of the archetypal weave to fine and soft European hair. Floria Amon has been specifically trained to create a weave that is not only the perfect tightness to prevent an uncomfortable hairdo but the right pressure to ensure the weave stays in place for at least three weeks, I’m into my fifth week now and the hair is showing no signs of letting me down. I have truly joined the ranks.

Floira then cut Leah’s hair into soft layers and curled into soft gentle curls using GHD Gold Classic Styler. She finished the look by gently brushing through the ends for perfect natural looking extensions. Mr and Mrs Skött’s W11 diaries In which they visit the Hippodrome and drive to Denmark with dogs

W

e were excited to be invited for a personal tour of the newly launched Hippodrome Casino in Leicester Square, having not been there since the 80s. While walking around, we both had feelings of deja vue, remembering those drunken nights when it was one of the first big nightclubs in London. It is now a glossy casino, show space and restaurant. We were treated to a fab burlesque show and will definitely be heading back to the restaurant as could not choose from the many delicious sounding dishes on the menu; double cooked pork belly and lobster fish fingers won over, but we will be back for Millionaires Mac and cheese with truffles. Mr Skött headed off to the Tour De France, and ended up spending a day in the hands of the French military police. No, he hadn’t misbehaved, but picked up a job for a cycling magazine to photograph a day in the life of the Gendarmerie who manage the Tour. An action-packed day was spent whizzing around the course at high speed driven by the President’s pursuit driver. We took the Skött dogs on a driving holiday to Denmark where we spent a lot of time behind tractors and combine harvesters, but as the fields look so beautiful at this time of year we really couldn’t complain, and better than sitting behind caravans. Scandiphile Mrs Skött became a true Viking by swimming in the cold North Sea on more than one occasion. After the Olympics and Carnival it almost feels like a new start and we are tempted to say Happy New Year. Instead, we will wish you happy Peace Day. Don’t forget to mark International Peace One Day on 21 September. We love Debut Contemporary’s Art initiative to spread the word by painting Peace One Day logos and doves on the windows of shops, which you will be shortly seeing in the salon window on Golborne Road and in shops around Notting Hill. mrandmrsskott@zest-media.com

FRESH, NOT FROZEN

BOTOX MYTH BUSTERS 1. Botox freezes your facial expressions You can choose to have a more frozen look, but it’s not necessary. By injecting small, precise amounts we can soften the lines, but keep movement around the eye area, so you’ll still have your facial expressions. 2. Botox is toxic Botox is a purified form of Botulinum toxin. The concentration of the toxin is very low and when it’s injected in pinpoint amounts it won’t spread to other areas of the body, making it a safe treatment. 3. Botox is painful Most people only feel a mild, stinging sensation, however, some find the treatment uncomfortable. Mica has a lot of experience and skill with Botox injections and many clients comment on her soft touch. In addition, the Waterhouse Young clinic use a revolutionary new technique to numb the area and minimise any discomfort. The treatment is over before you know it.

The Waterhouse Young Clinic’s gentle approach to wrinkle-free skin

I

of like many people, you believe that Botox can only achieve results by freezing your natural facial expressions, it’s time to think again. Dr Mica Engel, one of Waterhouse Young’s cosmetic doctors, unravels the myths about Botox and shares her secret to a fresh, wrinklefree appearance without frozen features. What’s Botox used for? Botox is used to treat frown lines, crow’s feet, ‘bunny’ lines on the nose, smile lines and to tighten the skin around the neck and jowls. It’s also become popular for treating excessive sweating of the armpits, hands, feet and forehead, and teeth grinding (which can cause headaches and damage to teeth). Does Botox still have a stigma? People used to think that if you’d had Botox it gave you status. Now it’s an everyday treatment. The stigma surrounding it is far less than it used to be, and with a conservative approach no one need ever know you’ve had it done.

How can I look fresh, not frozen? When you smile or frown the muscles in your face contract, causing lines and wrinkles. Over time these lines become permanent. Botox works by relaxing the muscle, but too much can stop all movement, which gives a frozen look. We prefer to subtly enhance your features, rather than give you a stiff, unnatural look, so we take a conservative approach. We start by injecting very small amounts into precise points in the muscle thus softening wrinkles but keeping some muscle movement. We’ll see you two weeks later to make sure you’re happy with the results and, if needed, we’ll finetune them by giving you a top-up treatment. Who should carry out Botox? Botox is a prescribed medicine, so you’ll meet one of our aesthetic doctors for a full skin consultation. If you decide together that it’s the right treatment for you, they’ll prescribe it. Botox injections should only be given by a qualified doctor with relevant training – at our clinic they are always carried

out by one of our aesthetic doctors. Ideally, you should choose someone registered with regulatory body, the British College of Aesthetic Medicine. All our aesthetic doctors and nurses are registered. What are the alternatives? While Botox is effective and safe, there are alternatives, such as: • Dermal fillers, which are injected into the skin to plump it up and smooth lines; • Dermaroller, a micro skinneedling treatment that triggers the body into regenerating collagen and elastin, making it perfect for treating scarring, facial and décolleté lines and overall skin rejuvenation; and • Medical Facials, which give a temporary result by plumping up the skin to soften lines, making them appear reduced. We’ll talk you through your choices at the consultation to help you find the right treatment for you. Whatever you decide, we’ll always take a gentle approach to leave you with wrinkle-free skin that makes you feel great. 69

You’ve had a huge influence in the way that the public think about food, from school dinners, to encouraging people to cook. What has been the proudest moment of your career so far? I think getting half a billion quid out of the British government for school food back in 2005/6 was a high point. I am worried about all that hard work being undone at the moment with the Coalition not making sure that Academies follow the nutritional standards we all fought for. To be honest, there are so many proud moments; when Fifteen restaurant opened in 2002, that was another one that stands out – it was incredible and the fact that we’re still training young people ten years later is so inspiring. Every time I go to one of the graduation days in London, Cornwall or Amsterdam (where we also have restaurants), it’s always an emotional time. But I’ve got loads still to do and so I hope there will be more memorable moments to come.

IMAGE: NEWSPIX/REX FEATURES

Who are your culinary heroes? There are so many. Rose Gray and Ruth Rogers, of course; also Gennaro Contaldo, the Italian Stallion and my mentor; Alice Walters and Keith Floyd. I would have loved to have met Keith – for me, he embodied everything that’s exciting about cooking. Three ingredients you couldn’t survive without? I’m a chilli freak so I couldn’t live without a bit of heat, and then probably some good quality extra virgin olive oil and definitely lemon. Having a family and being so busy yourself, who does the cooking at home? And whose food do the children prefer? I do the cooking when I’m there, which is usually the weekends, although I am also trying to have as many Fridays off as I can this year.

During the week Jools is the cook and she’s become really good over the years. I couldn’t say whose food the kids prefer, I’d get in trouble. Do you have a guilty food pleasure? Green and Black’s chocolate, although it is an occasional treat. Can you tell us about your biggest kitchen disaster? That would have to be the welldocumented Valentine’s Day mishap many years ago when I tried to cook naked for my wife and ended up scalding myself with hot steam in a delicate area. Was there a meal that changed your life? Probably the one I was preparing at the River Café back in 1998 when I got filmed by the documentary TV crew. When the show ended up on TV, I started getting phone calls from TV producers wanting to make a series with just me and – to cut a long story short – the naked chef was born. What is your earliest food memory? The smell of mum’s roast chicken on a Sunday. Why did you choose Notting Hill as the location for your biggest Recipiease to date? Recipease has been a huge success in Brighton and Clapham Junction but we’ve deliberately waited a while before opening the third store because we wanted it to be really special. Notting Hill is the perfect location and I think we’ll really make the area proud. There’s so much to see and so many cooking classes to choose from that I’m sure everyone will find something to excite them.

What is Recipease?

Recipease is described as a cooking, food and kitchen shop and Jamie’s Notting Hill branch on the corner of Notting Hill Gate and Pembridge Road is the third in his portfolio. A place to bring the community together to cook, visitors will be able to try a range of cookery classes ranging from fresh pasta making to Mexican street food. There’s an in-store wood-fired oven for customers to try their hands at, perfecting an exciting form of cooking. Jamie’s community hub also has a relaxing café area, a shelf full of ready meals, counters for bread, cakes and treats, plus loads of beautiful kitchen kit to browse and buy, all branded as part of the Jamie empire.

RECIPE

FRAGRANT GREEN THAI CURRY (SERVES 4)

6 spring onions, washed & trimmed 4 - 6 medium green chillies, deseeded and finely chopped 2 cloves of garlic 1 tablespoon fresh root ginger, peeled and finely chopped 1 tablespoon coriander seeds, pounded or crushed ½ teaspoon freshly ground pepper Maldon sea salt & freshly ground pepper to taste Half a handful of lime leaves, torn 1 teaspoon soy sauce 3 drops of fish sauce 2 lemongrass stalks, trimmed back and finely chopped 2 good handfuls of fresh basil on the stalk 3 food handfuls of fresh coriander on the stalk 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil Zest & juice of 3 - 4 limes, to taste

Put all the green curry paste ingredients in a pestle and mortar or food processor and mash/whizz to a smooth green paste. Marinate the chicken or vegetables in a little of the paste for 30 minutes, then add a little oil and the chicken pieces to a hot casseroletype pan or wok. Fry for four minutes, then add the remainder of the marinade – it will sizzle and spit. Stir in the coconut milk, bring to the boil and simmer gently for eight minutes until the chicken is cooked. Season to taste. The flavour should have a kick but be reasonably mellow – very fresh and fragrant. Put some rice into the base of your bowl, add in the chicken curry – ensure you add in the liquid. Top with chopped pistachio nuts, toasted coconut flakes and fresh coriander. Sprinkle with poppadoms for an added crunch.

CHUNKY COCONUT, TOMATO, CUCUMBER & LIME RELISH

This is a fresh salad/relish and is very simple to make. It goes especially well with fragrant green chicken curry. 16 cherry tomatoes, quartered or roughly chopped ½ fresh coconut, grated or shaved 1 small handful of basil or coriander, roughly chopped 15cm/6 inches of cucumber, skinned, seeds removed and roughly chopped 1 tablespoon olive oil Salt & freshly ground black pepper Juice of 1 - 2 limes 1 thinly sliced red chilli (optional) Put the tomatoes, coconut, basil, cucumber and chilli (if using) into a bowl and toss. Just before serving, toss in the olive oil, salt, pepper and lime juice to taste. Recipe by Jamie Oliver, recipease.com

A

fter heading up the shabby chic staircase, complete with signs telling you to mind your step, you emerge into a beautiful dining room washed with light from the wonderful floor to ceiling sash windows, which overlook the bustling Portobello market.

We were excited by the arrival of head chef James Lidsey, ex-L’Escargot, but a little nervous as at first glance as the menu looks a bit daunting, with each dish listing so many ingredients, some of which I think taste much better than they sound. A starter of heritage beetroot with goats curd, a very soft cream cheese, with a delicate

texture and a tangy flavour which worked well with the beetroot. Finished with cob nuts and a drizzle of Regents Park honey. I found something very appealing about honey that has been made from all the wonderful flowers in Regents Park. Lisa’s salmon mousse was delicate but with a good kick from the horseradish blini. Cornish lemon sole was spot on. Lemon sole, if not fresh, can easily go soggy, but this was super fresh and cooked to perfection. The pot roast chicken was finished with a quick flash in the pan, which meant superb crisp skin, combined with wonderful mushroom and tarragon flavours. The only criticism of

both dishes was that they were quite salty. The desserts all sounded good, but our choice was a bit of a let down – the chocolate mousse tasted floury and the bitter orange chocolate ice cream too sickly, it reminded me of a melted chocolate orange. The friendly and welcoming maître D recommended a crisp and affordable bottle of Sauvignon Blanc from a customer friendly wine list with a good range of prices. The menu, like the room, provides a great mix of modern and eclectic and using fresh seasonal ingredients it manages to combine great British dishes and French dishes. 75

MIN Jiang Royal Garden Hotel, 2-24 Kensington High Street W8, 020 7361 1988 minjiang.co.uk

F

amed in Singapore, Min Jiang is a serious and formal foodie destination on the top floor of Kensington’s Royal Garden Hotel. With impressive views across the park and all over London, it’s a sunny spot during the day and an atmospheric place at night. The menu’s vast and slightly daunting – you don’t want to miss the best things – but a selection of dim sum is easily chosen, with favourites including pan-fried spring onion cake and steamed pumpkin dumplings with mixed seafood, as well as deep-fried yam croquette with seafood. However, what you are really here for is the duck, which is best ordered in advance to avoid a 45-minute wait. It’s a proper ritual, carved in front of you by a silent, starch-jacketed waiter, and presented in two servings, precluded by tiny morsels of crispy skin dipped in granulated sugar. Then there are pancakes in two varieties: shredded leek and sweet sauce, or radish, cabbage and garlic sauce. And thirdly there are pretty canapé-style discs of lettuce topped with perfect dollops of moreish spiced minced duck. After this, we enjoy bowls of noodles and seafood fried rice with salted fish, all of it intensely flavoured and presented in hushed reverence. Min Jiang is an exotic treat in one of London’s bestestablished family-run hotels, so try it.

It’s the end of an era in Kensington Place, where the famous mural that dominates the room is set to be replaced this month. Mark Wickham’s painting of Kensington Gardens (Round Pond with empty champagne bottle) is to go into storage and in its place will be a new gallery space, whose first exhibitor will be young artist Jelly Green. Her work focuses on cows – large-scale, detailed bovine portraits, which might seem out of place in a fish restaurant but is definitely set to impress. Staff at the restaurant are looking forward to hearing what diners think. Kensington Place, 201 Kensington Church Street W8 020 7727 3184

Here’s a shocking statistic: every year, about 75 disposable cups are manufactured for each person on the planet. Anyone who likes coffee and gives a fig about waste will already be worried about the amount of cups they get through, even if they are recyclable. Keepcup is the solution: these reusable, barista standard cups are the perfect alternative to the throwaway equivalent – bring it with you, take it home, put it in the dishwasher and repeat. And they look good too – check out the stylish display at Westbourne Grove’s Planet Organic or design your own colourway at keepcup.com.

POP! Three of the best champagnes

1. PERRIER JOUËT BELLE EPOQUE, 2004: The famous beautiful flowery bottle is enough to make us giddy, but the taste – courtesy of Chardonnay grapes from Cremant – is elegance and refinement itself. Impeccable, its subtle flavours speaks of finesse and class.

2. MOËT IMPÉRIAL: The iconic champagne, unchanged since 1869, embodies Moët & Chandon’s unique style, distinguished by its bright fruitiness, its seductive palate and its elegant maturity.

3. PIPER HEIDSIECK RARE BRUT 2002: Rated the best champagne of 2011 on its release last year, Marie Antoinette’s favourite tipple is a favourite with us too. 77

ABSOLUTELY | FOOD & TR AV EL THE HOTEL: Found off the southwestern tip of Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly may be a train, coach, plane, mini-bus and boat ride away but the level of peace and quiet this gorgeous archipelago exudes is more than worth the journey there. The hotel of Hell Bay on Bryher, the smallest of the islands, is so-called because of the crashing waves that sweep in from the Atlantic – waves that have sunk no less than 530 ships throughout the years. Hell Bay, which hides in its own cove, is all cream-and-blue interiors and white-painted windows that open out on to blinding blue sea. Other than the hotel, there isn’t much else on this particular island to see and visit – a shop, a café and a smattering of New England-style houses – but its allure lies in long walks across craggy rocks and grassy knolls, paddling in the shallow waters and making small talk with the occasional dogwalking locals. Going to Hell and back has never been this enjoyable.

UK GETAWAY

Hell Bay, Scilly Isles THE BEDROOMS:

THE RESTAURANT:

Small but perfectly formed, Hell Bay has 25 suites for bedding down in: our Studio Suite was ridiculously spacious with double doors and a small balcony overlooking the Atlantic – a view to rouse even the sleepiest guest from slumber. Beach house chic runs throughout, with wood and wicker in blues and beige, scenes of Scilly hanging on walls, Malabar fabrics and Lloyd Loom furniture. In addition to the bottle of champagne on-ice that awaited us on arrival, there was also a cupboardconcealed mini-bar and coffee station for fuel not of the bubbly variety. Satellite and DVD players come as standard.

GET THERE: A regular service runs between London Waterloo and Bristol Parkway, after which, one must catch a flight from Bristol Airport into St. Mary’s. From there, hop aboard a ferry to Bryher via Tresco.

PRICE TAG: Suites at Hell Bay start from £135 per adult per night on a half-board basis, including boat transfers to/from the hotel. To book (and for travel options) contact 01720 422947 or hellbay.co.uk

THE SPA:

Heading up the Hell Bay kitchen is Richard Kearsley, who uses fresh, seasonal ingredients: expect beef from Tresco and crab from Bryher, and dishes such as Cornish mackerel and fillet of hake. Breakfast is just as delicious — from the full English to salmon so fresh you half expect it to wrangle free from the hollandaise. There are even chickens on-site, just in case you feel like getting your own eggs in the morning. For a change of scenery, those staying longer than a couple of nights should hop on the ferry to Tresco and lunch at Ruin Beach Café at Sea Garden Cottages.

There’s no on-site spa, per se, but there is a separate building that houses all you need to rest and recharge. Burn off one too many seafood suppers in the small gym, work up a sweat in the sauna or take a drip in the whirlpool. There’s also a heated outdoor pool with sun loungers and if you’re more about clothes-on than clothes-off, a living room with pool table, board games, TV and Guitar Hero is sure to stave off boredom. Kids will be in their element. 79

ap House, just off Westbourne Grove, scooped the prestigious RIBA Manser Medal in 2009 for best one-off house of the year. Architect Luke Tozer clapped eyes on the site that he would translate into an intriguing and beautiful family home back in 2005, and decided that here he could work his visionary wonders. But this was no ordinary site. Sandwiched snugly between two white stucco houses, the streetfacing façade was a mere sliver of bricks and mortar at only 8-ft wide. Not the usual domestic dimension at all. Tozer’s practice, Pitman Tozer, specialises in opening up awkward spaces and transforming them into covetable living quarters. But in this case, – as so often – the edge-of-seat process was in securing planning permission. After that, Pitman Tozer ingeniously reconciled the narrow constraints of the building by opening up the back, where there is an above-average

width open-plan living room and kitchen with glass doors onto a patio which – best of all – open up in summer to bring the outside in and make one huge living space. It’s only from the garden that visitors really get the lay of the land; each floor tapers and retracts towards the top, like an elegant stacked Japanese water feature. Meanwhile, Gap House’s eco-credentials are superlative; the windows are thermally and acoustically efficient; all the wood

is from an Austrian monastery where the monks plant and harvest the trees while the energy created powers the local village; heating and cooling comes via a ground source heat pump. For the Tozers, the ground source heat pump almost left an indelible mark on the building; having found only one drilling rig small enough to dig the boreholes, they almost couldn’t get it out again. “We had visions that we were going to have to live with a drilling rig in the garden,” laughs Tozer. But this architect is no stranger to extraordinary living arrangements, having grown up in an 11th-century priory that his father – also an architect – converted into a house; Tozer’s bedroom even had an arrow-slit which pierced six-foot walls for a window. “I attribute being an architect to that and to going round too many building sites as a child more than anything else.” London Open House Weekend, 22-23 September

LONDON OPEN HOUSE LOCAL SPOTS BRICK HOUSE, W2 This contemporary family home was completed by Caruso St John Architects in 2005 – barely visible from the street, the house is entirely constructed from brick, with an impressive spacious, multi-height living area and bedrooms in the basement. TRELLICK TOWER Iconic 31-storey Trellick Tower was built between 1968 and 1973 by Hungarian-born Erno Goldfinger; the main building houses 217 apartments, with lifts and services in a linked tower. All apartments have balconies and large windows, while clever details include spacesaving sliding doors and light switches fitted into door frames. Londonopenhouse.org

CHINA GIRLS

Artists Lou Rota and Jacqui Roche held popular workshops at Port Eliot Festival – but you can enrol in similar classes with them at home in Queens Park too WORDS: PENCIL AGENCY FOR ANTHROPOLOGIE; IMAGES: CHRIS FLOYD

I

t’s my first time in a tent,” says Jacqui Roche. She’s bringing a rose- covered chandelier and a potter’s wheel with her to Port Eliot and wants visitors to “roll up their sleeves, because there will be throwing” – of pots, naturally. It was the meditative, quiet qualities of clay that appealed to Jacqui when she first did her ceramics degree. Since then, she has built something of a word-ofmouth reputation for the children’s pottery classes she runs from her Queens Park garden and has just finished a new studio with a giant tree growing through it. Instead of bringing a kiln down to Port Eliot, she used air-drying clay, which she has worked a lot with children before (adults love it, too). “Don’t bother coming to the tent if you don’t like beetles, flamingos, hummingbirds and jackdaws,” says a smiling Lou Rota, the reigning queen of ceramic decoration. Lou’s aesthetic playfully challenge one’s expectations of pretty flowers in perfect teacups and remind us that never far away is a creeping beetle or fly. Her work gives equal balance to the way the natural world truthfully is, which comes as

MAIN PICTURE : LOU ROTA AND JACQUI ROCHE PHOTOGRAPHED BY CHRIS FLOYD

something of a relief. Let’s not kid ourselves now, it’s a touch macabre, a touch brilliant. So how did insects creep into her work? Lou’s earlier incarnation was as a maker of nature documentaries. The fi lmmaking involved travelling the world with a camera trained on lots of large mammals, such as whales and chimpanzees, when all she really wanted to study and fi lm were fruit fl ies... curiously, no-one ever commissioned that

nature documentary. However, her moment arrived when she began to look at them not just as a natural phenomenon, but also as extremely beautiful visual objects. Her small business of ceramic decorating and wall stickers gives her so much satisfaction. “I’ve so much more to show now,” she says. “Previously, I would work for a year and just have a tape on a shelf at the end of it. I now have shelves of evidence that I love.”

S

ince we announced Best Paw Forward in last month’s magazine lots of things have been happening, for one thing, we now have a brand new web site bestpawforward.org, where your doggy can log in and register for the exciting event. The other good news is that Simon Dale has agreed to be our master of ceremonies on the day. Simon is a DJ who has a weekly show on HeartFM and is a well known dog lover as well as a great supporter of Cancer Research UK via his work with Race for life. As all of you know Best paw forward is a sponsored dog walk in aid of Cancer Research UK and is taking place on Saturday September 29th. What you may not know is that the venue, Wormwood Scrubs Park, is adjacent to Hammersmith Hospital where Cancer Research UK has one of its many research facilities and undertakes cutting edge research and clinical trials into many aspects of cancer and its treatment - particularly breast, ovarian and lung cancer. Hammersmith Hospital is also the place where one of the individuals from the group who organised Best paw forward underwent treatment twice for cancer in the 1980’s and being involved with the fund raising brings to story full circle. So keep your eyes open for more updates on twitter, Facebook and online and don’t forget to get you pampered pooch to signed up and start raising money today. 91

IN THEIR OWN WORDS

Alex Verbeek and David Clifton, associate directors of Mountgrange Heritage’s Residential Development Department

‘‘

PHOTOGRAPHY BY RICHARD CLARK

he more unpalatable side of estate agency has often involved property developers striking deals in smoky pubs. While cigarettes may have been banned from public places, property developers remain omnipresent, albeit in the shadows, always on the hunt for the next opportunity. Last summer at Mountgrange Heritage we realised that the culture of development deals stood quite separate from their successful ‘open-market’ estate agency business – so we established a Residential Development & Investment department, whose modus operandi is strictly limited to focus on the world of property development. The department consists of myself (I have worked for Mountgrange Heritage in the residential sales department for several years) and my colleague David Clifton, who joined the firm last year bringing with him over 10 years’ planning and property development experience. I have been lucky enough to be a resident of Notting Hill for the majority of my life and have an intimate knowledge of the area. This allows me to appreciate the qualities the area has to offer and to bring this knowledge directly to clients. We both take great interest in people’s lives and the area in which they work and live. Building land in Central London is scarce so we are constantly looking at recycling existing buildings. Disused properties and warehouses are favourites with our clients as well as the shabbier hotels and lodging houses that can be given a new lease of life and restored to their full glory. While every change is lamented by someone things never stand still, being part of some of these changes is rewarding and often exciting. There is obviously an emotional element to the job – recently we went up to Kensal Rise to look at what was the local library, shut down not long ago by Brent Council. There were people camped outside protesting the loss. The ultimate owner of the library is All Souls College, Oxford and while the majority of the trustees are academics, likely to sympathise with the local residents, their hands are tied by the rules of their Trust. So while it is often hard to work out what is the right thing to do, it is often more difficult to make a desirable solution viable. As you would expect, much of the work undertaken by myself and David takes place behind “closed doors”. If you have any interest in property deals in and around Notting Hill, Kensal Rise, Bayswater and beyond, a call to Mountgrange Heritage’s Development and Investment department could prove most profitable.

What is holding up the property market?

William Tellwright Associate Director John D Wood & Co., Kensington

A

s various oracles consult their crystal balls ahead of the start of traditionally the busiest time in the estate agents’ calendar, I am reminded of a wonderfully simplistic summary. The Financial Markets, which can be seen as the main driver behind the high end property market in Notting Hill, are currently like a strapless bra; half the people are wondering what’s holding it up, whereas the other half are waiting for it to drop so that they can grab the opportunity with both hands. As my wife pointed out, that was far too astute and witty to have originated from me; all credit goes to a City trader. What I do know, however, is that an ever increasing number of people from all over the world are drawn to Notting Hill. Why? Apart from the tree-lined streets, up market boutiques, restaurants, designer cafés and fast transport links via the Central line to the City, it’s because of the communal gardens. The very concept of being able to leave your garden door open in Central London, allowing the free flow of children, dogs, cats, fresh air, and community spirit, is of enormous appeal to young and old. Communal gardens are unique to Notting Hill, and high demand proves that everyone wants to live on one, especially one with direct access into the gardens. Most are closely guarded secrets behind hornbeam hedges and locked gates, made famous in Richard Curtis’ film, containing tennis courts, play grounds, rose gardens, tree houses, croquet lawns, boules, and garden

benches. Many host Guy Fawkes bonfires and fireworks nights and all form a heart of a very local community enabling neighbours to mingle and forge friendships. During the Olympics we were able to see more than ever how well known Notting Hill has become. We were asked numerous times each day for directions to Portobello Road, whether from Chinese, Americans or Brazilians however well signed it is in the Underground station! It should be no surprise that John D Wood & Co. is harnessing the area’s ever growing popularity by opening a new office on Ladbroke Grove to link up with our Holland Park and Kensington offices and give us a stronger presence in this part of W10. Now it is September and we have entered traditionally the busiest time of year for selling property. Children have returned to school and the countdown is on for people to move before Christmas. We have a high number of applicants registered to buy property in Notting Hill, Holland Park and Kensington so if you are thinking of moving yourself, now would be an ideal time, especially when the number of applicants out looking to buy are far outnumbering the properties currently available on the market. We are here to advise on every aspect of selling your home and are the only estate agency to offer a complimentary Sales Service to help clients prepare their homes for sale and to ease the logistics of moving. We also have a Professional Department which specialises in lease extensions and enfranchisement who are also able to offer advice to leaseholders. Please do call me for advice on 020 7908 1100 or email me at wtellwright@johndwood.co.uk.

Absolutely’s monthly overview of the market

NOTES NOTTING HILL NEWS

RUTH BLOOMFIELD ON BASEMENT BATTLES Undignified public slanging matches, threats of legal action, and firm friendships shattered. Welcome to life in some of west London’s most expensive streets where battle lines have been drawn over basement extensions. Oddly enough, the vogue for ‘iceberg’ homes has been boosted by the recession. It is now so difficult to move house that in certain circles dropping a minimum £250,000 to burrow underground has started to look like a positive bargain. Of course it is easy to get sneery about the owners of gazillion pound properties close to the Notting Hill house of former Chelsea Football Club chief executive Peter Kenyon or the Kensington pad of Take That star Howard Donald weeping bitter tears over the aggravation caused by their basement projects. But it is also true that months of noise, vibration, streets blocked by lorries, dust coating windows and cars, and the spectre of structural damage are enough to turn the most neighbourly amongst us into the Incredible Hulk. Kensington and Chelsea Council has now bolted the stable door after the horse has long bolted with some weak proposals to restrict future development. But perhaps the real answer lies in a compensation scheme for neighbours who are inconvenienced by building work of any kind. Because, while money isn’t everything, a decent cheque in the post can sweeten most pills – and would at least pay for window cleaning and ear plugs for the duration.

Well what a summer we’ve had! The greatest show on earth has been and gone and our sportsmen and women did us proud. Years of hard training, commitment and sacrifice resulted in 29 Gold, 17 Silver and 19 Bronze medals being won. Our transport system didn’t melt down, the roads didn’t gridlock and our security wasn’t breached. In fact, we managed to be hosts to one of the best Olympics we’ve seen for many years. Pre-Olympics, overseas buyers were viewing London property as a safe haven for their money. Now, not only is London a safe haven, but it is now also being perceived as a great place to live and nowhere more than within our fair borough. Post Olympics and we have been inundated with purchasing requests from prospective buyers as far afield as Japan, China, India, the Middle East and also the United States. Laurence Lai is Director of Faron Sutaria and has been with the company for 22 years. He has been successfully acting for clients in the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea for over 18 years and is a resident here. faronsutaria.co.uk

FOX PRIMARY SCHOOL OLYMPICTHEMED ART COMPETITION

Last month, Bective Leslie Marsh’s Kensington office organised a very successful art competition with one of the city’s top primary schools, Fox, located in Hillgate Village on Kensington Place. 45 children aged five and six years old entered our Olympic-themed art competition. For the next few weeks, the BLM Kensington office will be displaying the children’s art work in its windows.

ow, what an exciting diary entry….GO TEAM GB! Is anyone else feeling the Olympic withdrawals? I sat at my desk through most of it, desperate to hear regular updates from my iPhone/internet. I was initially pretty against the whole disruption I thought this major event was going to cause but I was wrong. What an amazing few weeks, some of the proudest moments in history. As for the market? I think most people were far more interested in the jumps that were made out of London iconic buildings during the eventing than buying a new home. Fewer properties hit the market in Notting Hill and Kensington with buyers jetting off to sunnier climes to avoid the ‘chaos’ – but what a week to miss. Onwards and upwards, exciting properties will be hitting the market in the historically busy autumn market which I’m hugely excited about. We need to get this market moving again and welcome all the new visitors and hopefully hoards of budding new property owners. Maddie Lewington, 020 7727 7777; dng.co.uk

FRENCH CONNECTION

Absolutely visits Douglas & Gordon’s new French-speaking office in South Kensington

D

ouglas & Gordon has added to its firepower in South Kensington and Chelsea by opening a third office in Harrington Road. Situated right opposite the French Lycee, the office will improve service in the area, particularly for the growing demand from French buyers. D&G knows that property-specific language can confuse even the most ardent anglophile, so this will be a Frenchspeaking office, supporting the increasing number of escapees from the Hollande Government’s wealth taxes. Ivor Dickinson, D&G MD comments: ‘We hope to give those French families looking to relocate here a relatively stress-free house buying experience.’ The installation of the nine-screen video wall in the office has raised a number of eyebrows. Absolutely asked Ivor to explain his vision for D&G and the significance behind

the video wall. ‘To fully answer the question, one needs to look at why Douglas & Gordon bought this office. We acquired an agency called Berkeley International eight years ago with the principal aim of relaunching their Kensington Church Street office. This we did, but we were then left with the Harrington Road site. Despite its very prominent position, it was an incredibly shallow shop with room

make it a more viable office. It occurred to me that this was an opportunity to make the back wall of the office more interesting, as it could be viewed from the street by thousands of people every day.’ The Harrington Road office will be showing films created for an annual film competition, in association with Ravensbourne Media College, by local filmmakers. They will also be linked to create a huge screenshowing Google maps and a street-view of any local property. But why go to all this trouble? ‘We have always made it our business to experiment with new technology and as soon as our last branding idea is copied, it is then time to think of something new. We hope that this unique way of looking for property will attract people to our new office and keep Douglas & Gordon at the very forefront of innovation.’ Patrick Alvarado, 020 7581 1152 douglasandgordon.com

Right opposite the French Lycee, the office will improve service for growing numbers of French buyers for only three desks. It was also very close to Douglas & Gordon’s existing offices, so I decided to use it as an installation space and over the years, we have had some astonishing displays from graduates from various London colleges. However, with the massive influx of French buyers in the last two years and this site being so brilliantly positioned opposite the Lycee, we decided
