O

Keeping it unreal WIMBLEDON BORN AND BRED ARTIST JOSEPHINE LYONS TALKS TO KATY JARRATT ABOUT MEMORIES, MANUSCRIPTS AND MAKING PEOPLE FRUSTRATED

scar Wilde said that ‘life imitates art.’ In Josephine Lyons’ case, it is most definitely the other way around. Or – as I’m sure she would probably insist – an ever perpetuating circle of life imitating art imitating life. The London artist and oil painter, now coming-of-age, appears to be on the verge of something transformative. I expect if you’d asked her at the age of three, she would’ve also told you she was on the verge of something transformative, but that it would take 26 years for the rest of the world to ‘get it.’ This determined attitude is the epitome of her life and work. Integrity and singleminded dedication to a goal can take you a long way if you have it, and luckily, she does. Having seen a preview of her latest exhibition, I can say it is good because it is unique, both in its format and its content. It is called ‘Love in Palimpsests – Memories of Imagination’ and it will be displayed at The Mernier Gallery, London Bridge from 11-22 December. Palimpsests, if you don’t already know, are ancient manuscripts where the text has been rubbed off and written-on again. Lyons uses this metaphor as an artistic exploration of her own life – and other’s lives – in a series of books which show different stages of human reflection on history, circumstances, memories, or anything which holds a place in time. The conceptual explorations within the books are manifested in the works of art on the walls too and the books presented as the ‘working out’ of those conclusions. The format and terminology for the exhibition is vague and abstract for a reason and it’s not to be pedantic. Lyons is ‘big’ on viewer participation and she encourages the viewer to find their own version of meaning within the paintings. I suspect the idea is that nothing should be completely harnessed or fully interpreted, that the mystery is half the fun. If you are the type of person who enjoys this sort of existential egg hunt, then you will love her work. Those who are strictly black and white, might get frustrated. Getting this divisive reaction is – I’m sure – what she thrives on. Her works are filled with traces of her own childhood and upbringing – glimpses of ageless characters who have the same flame-red hair as she does – who are her, but not quite. The paintings are titled in long, meandering sentences like ‘to recreate another life but safe and precious,’ a choice which is at first baffling because it is simple and childlike, but quite often you find it has a more complex meaning underneath. But for all this, she does not appear pretentious; she just wants to communicate her meaning as widely as possible, through illustrating

12

ARTS & CULTURE

IF YOU ARE THE TYPE OF PERSON WHO ENJOYS THIS EXISTENTIAL EGG HUNT THEN YOU’LL LOVE HER WORK. IF YOU’RE MORE BLACK AND WHITE THEN YOU MIGHT GET FRUSTRATED universal experiences that everybody will understand in their own way: upbringing, love, memories, time. ‘The meaning behind this latest exhibition is basically what inspired me to become an artist,’ she says. ‘I found a picture of myself the other day surrounded by messy but impacting paintings I had made at the age of three. I don’t remember the experience of making them, just that I’ve always been fascinated by different presentations of life and imagination. Around the age of nine, I think I realised that painting was the main way for me to communicate.’ Lyons’ communication in the real world is quirky. She is in a perpetual state of distraction and her speaking voice is a quiet mumble. She quite often descends into a coy whisper even when the situation does not require it – yet ironically it is at these points where she is at her most surprisingly direct. It is evident that she lives her work and there is no doubt that every fragment of pain or joy she has communicated through art she has also felt, but she contains it well within a demeanor of understatement. This is the woman, after all, who cut off chunks of her extraordinary red hair to weave it into a cushion and present it as an installation in an exhibition. Lyons lived in Wimbledon for many years and attended school at Wimbledon High School for Girls. ‘Calan Lewis was my art teacher there and she was not just an inspiration, but her legacy gave me an enriched appreciation of visual culture. She taught me that it was okay to paint with

emotion, and that great art comes with dedication and focus.’ There is no doubt that Lyons still holds these values to this day, working tirelessly in her Hackney Wick art room which she shares with another artist, sometimes working late into the night. Her connection to Wimbledon is, however, strong. After attending school there and doing a paper round every morning (‘I will never forget seeing first light in Wimbledon or the changing of the seasons on the common and how I could see it reflected on the houses in the village,’) she did a foundation degree at Wimbledon School of Art, before she went on to a BA at Goldsmiths University. From there she exhibited at Covent Garden Film Studios, the APT Gallery and Woolworths in Crouch End. As the theme of her latest exhibition dictates, many of her childhood memories are of Wimbledon: ‘The Common was a place for me that was timeless, and as a child I felt I was very lucky to have such an open space to play and develop my appreciation for landscape.’ What has been the most inspiring exhibition she has seen so far? ‘“The Real Van Gogh: the Artist and his Letters”, at the Royal Academy,’ she says. ‘I found the movement of the stories in the letters and their contribution to our perceptions of the paintings totally inspirational. I saw how

much he cared about every brush stroke and found a voice in painting while he struggled to communicate clearly in his every day life. The works seem very human; he is able to take different colour palettes from sunsets or skin, and apply them to new objects, like Gauguin’s chair. He takes senses of places and people with him, and his approach to memory is one of the most important lessons I have learnt from his work and it has given me courage to develop my own work and makes me want to reflect how I see human nature too.’ She has an unending faith in life and art and life through art which is contagious. When I ask her where she sees herself in five years time, she replies that she will ‘continue to develop the books.’ The Palimpsests – which have now become the basis for her changing perceptions. She adds that she hopes the future paintings of the red-headed girl will include ‘two redheaded children running around her feet.’ We smile. ‘Or maybe not,’ she censors, perhaps thinking she has been too self-identifying or revealingly specific for a moment. ‘OK. Maybe just put ‘children,’ that’s all,’ she adds. Mernier Gallery, SE1 1RU 020 7407 3222, merniergallery.co.uk josephinelyons.net 13

The

KATY JARRATT EXPLORES THE STORY OF ONE OF WIMBLEDON’S MOST HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT SITES

Y

ou may have noticed or even know about the austere Second Empire style Victorian building at Copse Hill in the west of Wimbledon, dominating a whole stretch of the road and overlooking acres of beautiful parkland to the west. This is what was the Atkinson Morley Hospital, which for almost ten years now has stood empty on the road and left Wimbledon residents wondering. Over the last decade, the interiors have become a source of intrigue for visitors who were previously able to visit it in its Pompeii-style time warp and explore the long empty corridors, CT scanners in-situ, morgue slabs and wards strewn with stretchers, frozen in time. For some, the building was given almost mythical status, classed as yet another of London’s ‘beautiful but empty’ historical locations, and being listed under tags such as ‘urban decay’ or ‘England’s lost Hospitals’ in

streams and wild flowers. This will be the hospital’s and the site’s latest incarnation, and hopefully one of its less dramatic over the last oneand-a-half centuries standing at Copse Hill.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE HOSPITAL

photo libraries online. Most recently, there are indications of it being revived to life, now that it is surrounded by signs for property development giants Berkeley Homes, who have made plans – largely approved by Wimbledon residents – to develop the building into luxury flats called Wimbledon Hill Park. They also plan to renovate the site and preserve the wild parkland, which also acts as a centre for the community – a place where children play after school in acres of woodland,

The first hospital building on the site was erected in 1867 on what was Lord Cottenham’s, the Lord Chancellor’s 23-acre estate. In 1868, St George’s Hospital on Hyde Park Corner received a £150,000 grant from a Mr Atkinson Morley, who was a local hotelier and landowner, to create a purpose-built ‘convalescent hospital for poor patients in the countryside.’ Whilst being treated at St George’s Hospital, Atkinson Morley himself had been disturbed by the noise from passing traffic in the inner-city as he tried to recover. This peaceful retreat turned out to be in Wimbledon and the building was bought and transformed into a tranquil haven for patients

ATKINSON MORLEY HOSPITAL

AT THE PEAK OF ITS FAME, IT HAD 44 NEUROSURGICAL, 16 NEUROLOGICAL AND 60 PSYCHIATRIC BEDS; A SLEEP LABORATORY AND ITS OWN HELICOPTER LANDING FACILITY FOR INTERNATIONAL EMERGENCIES

recovering from serious illness. This continued until the outbreak of World War Two in 1939, when St George’s Hospital and Bolingbroke acted as emergency hospitals for war casualties. The Atkinson Morley Hospital’s connection to St George’s led to it becoming the main recovery home for many soldiers in need of convalescence from war wounds in the years during and after the war. Most significantly – due to the greater public acknowledgement of combat stress reaction (previously known as shell shock) and traumatic brain injuries during World War Two – a neurosurgery unit was eventually established there, under the direction of Britain’s most prolific lobotomist, Sir Wylie McKissock. Over the years during and after the war, the site expanded. Another building was bought on the site and used as a convalescent facility for patients recovering from neurosurgery in the main hospital, called The Wolfson Neurorehabilitation Centre. As the hospital became more popular, there was soon a need for nurse’s

live-in accommodation which the Atkinson Morley Hospital eventually bought from barrister, Thomas Hughes, who had written Tom Brown’s School Days while living in what is now known as The Firs – a set of flats just to the side of the hospital building itself and also located on Copse Hill. So prolific was McKissock’s work and expansion at the Atkinson Morley Hospital during the war, that it became an internationally recognised neurosurgery hospital in the years after. At the peak of its fame, it had 44 neurosurgical, 16 neurological and 60 psychiatric beds; a sleep laboratory and its own helicopter landing facility for international emergencies. From the turn of the century the building went into decline and facilities were considered out of date. In 2003, the hospital closed for good and all neuroscience services were transferred to a new wing at the St George’s Hospital in Tooting, now called The Atkinson Morley Wing.

FROM HERE TO THE FUTURE

Since 2003 there has been much discussion in Wimbledon, between Merton Council, the NHS, real estate developers and Wimbledon residents, about whether it should continue its function as a hospital, or be transformed into luxurious apartments as befit its ornate (if a little worn round the edges) architecture. The Atkinson Morley site was owned by the NHS for a while and passed through several hands until it was sold to Berkeley Homes in

2010 and the planning application for the site was approved by Merton Council in 2011. The developers hope to create a total of 25 houses, 54 flats and 144 parking spaces without disturbing the 17 acres considered to be Metropolitan Land which should be protected from building development. More significantly, three acres of that land has also been designated as a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation, as it contains a corridor of sustainable wildlife territories, ancient woodland, rare birds, badger sets and is a breeding ground for stag beetles – an endangered species. The hospital building itself will be sympathetically restored and converted into 25 luxury apartments. Over the years, Wimbledon residents have successfully fought off development and claims to the parkland which plays a very important part in the community, as it includes walking footpaths which link several different areas of Wimbledon together and playing fields for children which are used by local schools. This successful protection is mostly thanks to The Morley Park Trust, set up by several combined local resident’s associations in order to protect the site’s open land as development takes place. Merton Council unexpectedly claimed the freehold for the parkland several months ago, leaving resident’s in limbo as to its fate. But The Morley Park Trust’s hope in the next few years is to manage the parkland itself for the benefit of local people in Wimbledon. To get involved, contact amhlung.org.uk 17

FAMILY FUN PICTURE PERFECT

Charlie Round-Turner is Putney’s most prized possession when it comes to capturing precious moments in a photography portrait. He takes beautiful images of babies, children, families, couples, actors and more for all sorts of occasions in a range of different settings. He’s particularly good with children, having been a teacher for many years and thinks that the kids can sense that he’s ‘one of them’. 72 Cavendish Rd, SW12, 07814 106 561; charlieroundturner.com

UNDER ONE ROOF

If you’re feeling stuck for gift ideas for little ones this Christmas, Debenhams is a great place to problem solve. From the latest toys and games to babies and children’s clothes, it’s impossible to leave empty handed. 315 Lavender Hill, Clapham Junction, SW11, 0844 5616161; debenhams.com

Harrods’ Christmas windows have been taken over by a designer Disney Princess display – with iconic fairy tale dresses designed by some of the biggest names in fashion. There’s Oscar de la Renta’s version of Snow White’s dress; Valentino’s take on Beauty and the Beast’s Belle; and Versace has made Cinderella’s ballgown. As for Ariel – Marchesa has given her a makeover and Elie Saab is behind Sleeping Beauty’s dress, while Rapunzel has been styled by Jenny Packham. And don’t miss the Disney Princess pop-up boutique on the fourth floor of the store. 87-135 Brompton Road, SW1, 020 7730 1234; harrods.com

GOING GREEN

It can be a challenge to get your children to eat healthily, let alone steer them willingly in the direction of anything which remotely resembles green. To help set them on the right track, pop into Waitrose where you’ll find a wonderful selection of tasty treats like seasonal apricots and yoghurt coated raisins, which won’t cause any tears or tantrums with excess sugar. Keep them out of mischief and invite them to be your little elf in the kitchen, where you can enjoy cooking festive recipes from the likes of Heston Blumenthal and Delia Smith. 40-44 Saint John’s Road, SW11, 020 7978 7405; waitrose.com

CREATURE COMFORT

We’ve fallen in love with these adorable Christmas jumpers from JoJo Maman Bébé. I always like to think Christmas begins with the red cups at Starbucks. Sweets, glitter, baubles, parties and trees all make this time of year festive and we love it! The fashion themes for the season are rich lace, furs and silks – and Trilogy (Wimbledon village) have some of the best lux silk shirts, like the love letter lace printed top (above left). Fitting in nicely with the end of The Twilight Saga, we have vampire velvets and satins, sequins and embellishments. Opulence is also key with deep and luscious reds along with black and mulberry. Whilst silks and velvets may not be that appropriate for a youngster (or last very long), JoJo Maman Bebe (Northcote Road) has a sweet selection of Christmas clothes for babies and children. Flirty pretty things with...

Caroline Randell

KATY JARRATT CATCHES UP WITH CAROLINE RANDELL WHO SHARES SEXY SECRETS FROM HER LUXURY LINGERIE BOUTIQUE WHICH HAS EARNT A SMOULDERING REPUTATION FOR EXCELLENT FITTINGS.

What is special about Caroline Randell compared to other lingerie services? I have been working in the lingerie industry for nearly 10 years. During this time I have worked in Rigby & Peller as a fitting consultant and gained a lot of expertise in fitting lingerie and lingerie product knowledge. I opened my first boutique in Wimbledon Village three years ago, and I have just opened my second boutique in Richmond. I opened them because I wanted to create a lingerie experience with impeccable service in a friendly environment and without intimidating staff. We pride ourselves on knowing your bra size within three seconds and, for many people, giving them their first perfectly fitted bra! Who are your favourites of the lingerie brands and designers that you stock? That is difficult as we house over 30 designer brands and I love each one for different reasons. Our designers are picked for their excellent fabric quality, superb fit and their flair to create stylish and flattering products. I think having the right collection of designers is so important for the success of my business as our customers know they are getting the very best that the world has to offer. We have just launched Marlies Dekkers and are so pleased with the collection. I must say, this is the brand I am wearing at the moment. How would you describe the ethos of Caroline Randell? First of all, to share my knowledge and expertise by offering an expert fitting service with no tape measures in sight! Secondly, to make buying lingerie a convenience where everything is on display. There is no hunting around for different colours or sizes. It is all there. Thirdly, to create a boutique where nobody feels

intimidated when they come in. Lingerie can sometimes be a tricky subject for women and an embarrassing one for men who might want to buy a present, so we try to fill the gap and make people feel comfortable. Finally, to give women what I think is actually a life-changing experience – wearing lingerie that actually fits them! Why is well-fitting lingerie so important? It is of paramount importance. It is well known that 80 per cent of women are wearing the wrong size bra. In our

experience this is true, with most women wearing a back size that is too big and a cup size that is too small. Not only does this mean that we are not getting the correct support from our bras (which can lead to sagging, as well as neck ache and back problems) but in addition, using our fitting service can totally transform your figure – putting the curves back in the right places and improving the silhouette dramatically. What is your greatest daily pleasure of running the boutique? In a nutshell, it is amazing to be able to make a difference to how women feel about themselves. I realised I wanted to be a hat designer when… After graduating from The National College of Art & Design I won a place on the MA Fashion Design course at the Royal College of Art in London. When I was interviewed I didn’t know whether to play down the hats or play up the hats, but they were thinking of setting up a millinery course so I became their guinea pig. After one day there I said to my tutor Sheilagh Brown: ‘What should I do? Should I make hats or clothes?’ She said: ‘Make hats.’ It was very practical, not a great revelation. My career break came when… In 1989 I took one of my hats to Michael Roberts, fashion director of Tatler magazine, and his style editor, Isabella Blow. Our conversation that day was all of about 20 seconds and I thought nothing of it. A few weeks afterwards, the secretary at the college said: ‘Some lady has been phoning up. She wants to know what your schedule’s like for the next six months.’ It turned out to be Issy who was getting married and had decided I was going to make a hat for her. THE GOOD NEIGHBOUR Highlight of London Fashion Week this

September was… Lady Gaga opening my fashion show. I went to see her backstage at Twickenham [for the Born This Way Ball], and I was telling her about the show and then she just suggested it. It was all her idea. She was going to be in Dublin the night before, so she said that she’d fly over. Playing to 80,000 people on one night and then appearing in my show the next? Amazing. My inspiration behind the S/S 2013 collection was… African women getting rich! Alek Wek and Jourdan Dunn represented the collection well because… like all African girls, they know how to carry a hat! My favourite hat of all time is… A 17thcentury Dalian or sailing ship hat. I’d seen old renderings of ships in women’s hair – it was a costume designer’s dream. The idea for this hat was inspired and created from a chapter in Olivier Bernier’s Pleasure and Privilege titled ‘Rule of Fashion’ about life in France in the 1750’s. The chapter described a British Fleet Admiral, D’Estaing, losing a famous battle to the French fleet. In celebration, women in Paris wore ships in

36

Phillip Treacy.indd 36

19/11/2012 16:14

their hair to go to the opera; I loved the emotion attached to this. It is made from satin and the bone of the feather while the sails are paradise feathers. My biggest inspiration is… from natural forms and the beautiful lines in nature. I use contemporary influences, whether it’s sculpture, art or whatever is going on in the world today. I always try to do something new and fresh – there is always something new inspiring me. I’d like to design a hat for… Luise Rainer is one person. It’s the fact that she is still so alive and has lived through so much in her 101 years. I admire her spirit and the times she lived through. Modern contemporary glamour comes from old Hollywood. I’d like to collaborate with… I am not trying to be diplomatic, but I’ve worked with so many designers that I really can’t choose a favourite. It’s fun to work with Valentino because there is only one Valentino, and the same goes for Karl Lagerfeld or Alexander McQueen

when he was alive. It’s exciting to work with strong designers because they let you interpret their style. Some are specific, but many give me free reign to design with their collections in mind. My plans for the future are… I love the idea of the unknown and the future; you don’t know what is going to happen next week, and that’s a fashion attitude. Fashion animals are obsessed with something for a moment, and then they move on to something else. That’s the nature of the industry – it’s all about change. I like living in SW London because… It’s a wonderland! I live on Elizabeth Street in SW1, which is also where my shop is. I lived with Isabella and Detmar Blow in their house there when I first left the Royal College of Art and I set up my studio in their basement and consequently never left. I’ve lived here for 13 years and have little intention of going anywhere. I live with… My partner and my two little dogs T-Jay and Archie.

My favourite restaurants in SW are…. Il Corriere on Elizabeth Street. It does the best egg and chips in England and it is run by Diana, who is a fantastic mix of Italian and Cockney. And Metrogusto in Battersea. Oh, and Ambro does the best gnocchi ever! My favourite designers in SW are… Bruce Oldfield and Anna Valentine. My favourite travel destinations are… I have many but Venice is always a wonderful place for a city break. It is full of mystery and hidden corners. I like to stay in the Gritti Palace, because it simply couldn’t be anywhere else but Venice. The best hotels always capture the essence of their location. I’m most looking forward to… Christmas. I’ve been collecting vintage decorations for years and I’m still buying more… I will be spending Christmas… In the countryside with my family. philiptreacy.co.uk 37

DESIGNER OF CHEET LONDON, EMILY CHEETHAM, ON SWAPPING SOUTH WEST TRENDS FOR SINGAPORE STYLE

S

outh London was both home and workplace for over a decade until my husband’s job relocated to Singapore last year. Many friends had started to leave London and we felt that, instead of escaping to the country, we would escape from the country. So, we duly packed up the container, rented our house and headed off to Asia where a new phase began – a chance to embrace a new life in a different city, full of new adventures. Singapore has a reputation for being so clean and well ordered that it is clinical, sterile and lacking in character. True, it isn’t as colourful or as vibrant as Hong Kong, it is more Zurich-in-Asia, but we find this perception somewhat outdated. Yes, it is strict with severe punishments for rule-breaking, but having a young son we welcome the fact that we live in a safe and clean environment where life runs smoothly. If you look beyond the shopping malls, you’ll discover a diverse country, which, as a result of its Chinese, Malaysian, Indian and former colonial inhabitants, is rich in history and culture. Has life changed immeasurably since we swapped Balham, gateway to the south, for Singapore, Lion city of Asia? Well, we get our fair share of rain but with a year-round average daily temperature of 30+ degrees and 80 per cent humidity, it couldn’t be more different to the UK. As a fair-skinned Brit, I’m not sure I will ever feel truly comfortable in this climate, but you do acclimatise. One challenge of working as a handbag designer in a season-less environment is remembering which colours and materials are suited to cooler climates, particularly when

considering autumn-winter designs – so I have to rein in an instinctive gravitation towards hot, summery hues. Climate aside, as a former British colony, Singapore is, in many ways, a home from home. English is widely spoken, cars drive on the left hand side of the road and there is a Westminster style parliament. In terms of day-to-day living, many aspects of our old life in SW resonate with our new life in Singapore. Our pleasures remain the same in the east and west – whether it is seeking out the best coffee, new restaurant or simply watching our son on the swings and slide. Singapore is famously urbanised (when they run out of space they just reclaim more land from the sea), despite this, it does not feel like you are living in a concrete jungle. There are abundant immaculately kept parks, open spaces and tropical walkways and brand new playgrounds on practically every corner. The Victorians’ invention of the park as being for the public good seems to ring true in Singapore as well as in London. We’ve swapped running around Battersea Park for boot camp in the Botanics (by the Victorian bandstand no less!), walking on Wandsworth Common for a stroll around MacRitchie Reservoir and hiring bikes to take in the sea air of the East Coast Parkway over cycling through Kew Gardens. Being a working Mum, I don’t conform to the stereotype of the lady who lunches (but wouldn’t it be nice!), however, a trip to New Zealand a few years ago opened my eyes to the pleasures of a really good coffee – flat white of course. My favourite local haunt in London was the Bullet Coffee at the Roastery on Wandsworth Road, with 39

Emily Cheetham_v2.indd 39

19/11/2012 16:17

its heavenly range of organic coffee, not to mention the mignon of brownie that came with it. We are spoilt by a growing number of coffee houses here – one of the best is Carpenter & Cook, tucked out to the west of the island which serves exquisite cakes and coffee in an English-tea house setting and sells antique Newgate clocks. Food is one of Singapore’s main draws. My husband and I love Asian food and find that the best food is often in the least astounding setting. Some of our best eating experiences have taken place at plastic tables at hawker food markets: amazing ramen (usually involving a half hour queue such is its popularity) or rich seafood laksa, curry puffs or curry on a banana leaf. For an upscale dining experience, we are big fans of recently opened Jason Atherton’s Pollen restaurant at Gardens by the Bay. Whilst Singapore wins hands-down on food (sorry, London), my inner Britishness misses good pubs such as The Abbeville (Clapham) or Avalon (Clapham) for

leisurely, Sunday lunches with friends and probably too much red wine. The closest we get to a roast here is a barbequed shoulder of lamb with salad. Brunch is a more climate-friendly pastime, something the Singaporeans embrace with gusto. Many of the hotels will lay on elaborate all-you-can-eat weekend banquets with free flowing fizz. For a more family option, we enjoy our eggs to the tropical backdrop of Labrador Park’s Eco Café.

and one of the biggest living expenses (along with rent, cars and luxuries such as wine). We are fortunate to live very close to an excellent wet market, Ghim Moh, and so will buy fresh fish, fruit and vegetables from there, just as we might have sauntered to the local fruit & veg man. Being in this part of the world, our choice of spices is just incredible. Our local supermarket is akin to Waitrose – even offering the latter’s ‘essential’ range but at four times the price. We tend to head to a local butcher for meat – not least because that way the chicken comes without head and feet! Singapore offers a great lifestyle, with everything we could want at this stage of our lives. We have super friends and enjoy regular travel adventures. We are far from family and friends but visitors often travel through. Nonetheless, it is amazing how any ‘tired-of-London’ feelings we had are replaced by nostalgia and we will find our way back there at some point. For now though, we are making the most of our tropical post.

SINGAPORE OFFERS A GREAT LIFESTYLE, WITH EVERYTHING WE COULD WANT AT THIS STAGE OF OUR LIVES Shopping in Singapore is a national pastime. I tend to avoid Orchard Road and prefer the boutiques on Hajji Lane or Yong Siak Street – a similar feel to Northcote Road or Bellevue Road. Almost everything is imported, not least the food, making food costs high

I

POPPY CROSS SPEAKS TO RANDLE SIDDELEY ON BEING HELD AT GUNPOINT, DESIGNING VALENTINO’S GARDEN AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF BATTERSEA POWER STATION

’ve been anticipating talking to Lord Kenilworth – known professionally as Randle Siddeley – for over two weeks. Our interview has been postponed a handful of times due to a series of events which conspire against us; first Randle is called to duties abroad, then he was caught up in hurricane Sandy and the last time he was unwell (as his apologetic secretary explained), after blowing back in from New York. But then this should come as little surprise given that Randle is a man very much in demand. As the 4th Baron Kenilworth and son of the great interior designer, John Siddeley, his every move has been held under the microscope since childhood. ‘People always used to say: “Oh your father was wonderful, wasn’t he very clever?” And I used to say: “Well, actually, his son’s not too bad either”’. A touch of the breed of self-possession we Brits are little used to? Sure, but I would be inclined to agree with this self-judgment after just moments in his company. By the time I catch up with him, he’s back ‘in the land of the living’ after ‘dodging the hurricane’ and has just opened an office in New York and Canada, (there is also a satellite office in Hong Kong), the former of which is being managed by a previous client. ‘The proof of the pudding!’ Randle

happily hoots, before adding: ‘When someone asks what work’s like, she can actually vouch for it both ways’. Having founded his landscaping business in 1975, Randle designs projects all over the world and uses his tenure in the House of Lords to raise awareness on key environmental issues. He is also a founding member of Sustain Worldwide – a not-for-profit, pioneering organisation that brings together and promotes global developers who are mindful of their impact on the environment and are committed to enriching their local communities. Considering he plants trees for a living,

it’s little wonder that Randle is passionate about sustainability and where possible, he advocates using recyclable materials – to give you the measure, he’d like to see recycling ‘grey’ water (bathwater) to irrigate gardens become common practice. ‘It would be nice if one day that was part and parcel of conservation,’ he says. As a public figure, Randle’s personal life is frequently in the press. 2010 was a particularly prolific time for headlines, after he was held at gunpoint outside his home in Battersea in a terrifying daylight mugging, which he describes as ‘a devil wanting experience’. Then, just six months later he announced the end of his 19-year marriage to society jeweller Kiki McDonough, an old friend of the Duchess of York. As if that wasn’t enough, this summer his company was forced to stop work on designing the new garden at the house of President Assad’s residence near the coastal city of Latakia on the Mediterranean Sea, which, due to confidentiality reasons, Randle can only comment: ‘The project did happen, part of the project was built – that was it. And obviously when the situation took hold of the country we stopped.’(The site was subject to fierce fighting between government forces and rebels.) Yet, true to form, Randle maintained a stiff upper lip, stoically playing down the

‘I DID DO VALENTINO’S GARDEN IN HOLLAND PARK, WHICH HE CALLS HIS FAVOURITE GARDEN, EVEN THOUGH HE HAS GOT QUITE AN AMAZING PAD JUST OUTSIDE PARIS’ commotion, saying ‘life has to go on’ and so it did, with the successful launch of his new book Garden (amongst other things) which was published last year. ‘It demonstrates the traditional English garden, the backbone of all gardens, the skeleton and whether you make that traditional or classic,’ he explains. And if the client wants something more contemporary, Randle’s team are quite prepared to ‘be on the edge of it’. Do Londoners especially lust after the contemporary, I ask? ‘There was a time when I thought: “Oh my god, is this the time where I hang up my clogs?” This phase lasted a year or two but I think now it has settled down.’ On that note, I ask if he’s had any disasters. ‘Invariably… but ones I hope which haven’t cost the client.’ The publication of Garden coincided with what Randle calls his ‘bête noire’ – aka the Chelsea Flower Show, which he criticises for the waste of materials and man power ‘for an exhibition which takes two months to build only to have it exhibited for six days and then taken away.’ However, despite his feelings for the show, its timing invariably helped

draw attention to Garden – in fact, so much so that a second book is scheduled to follow next year. As I enviously leaf through the pristine lawns and beautiful blooms which proudly percolate the book, I’m keen to know who all the wonderlands belong to. But unfortunately my curiosity cannot be satisfied since Randle has to keep most names hidden, but he does say, ‘it is public knowledge that I did do Valentino’s garden in Holland Park, which he calls his favourite garden, even though he has got quite an amazing pad just outside Paris’. Ever the diplomat, Randle doesn’t have a favourite among the gardens he’s designed but describes the ‘wonderful project’ of the Aleppo – Beit Salahieh Hotel, (featured in Garden), which he did for a very old client. ‘You can look down from the roof terrace at the famous Citadel, it’s very special’ and explains that he lives for ‘the times when the client says to him, ‘it’s rather like waking up every morning looking at your own Monet painting.’

Randle Siddeley’s points of view

What do you think of the Embassy Gardens development? It’s created a big emphasis to Battersea and thank goodness because it needs something big like that to come along. For or against the development of Battersea Power Station? Get on with it! That’s what’s needed around here. There is now the impetus to get on with it because the new developers [A consortium of three of Malaysia’s biggest companies, SP Setia, Sime Derby, and the Employee’s Provident Fund, have paid £400m to buy the power station] have got the money and resources to get it up and running. And I think once they’ve got a section of it going then it creates a bit more interest and people will start looking at it and taking it seriously. Then you’ve also got the development. Favourite Park in London? Battersea Park’s great. I go there twice a week with my trainer. What’s your own garden like? I’m busy creating other people’s gardens – I don’t have time to do my own! Favourite Restaurant? Chez Bruce What are you looking forward to? The development of Battersea Power Station and its surrounding areas. My biggest prayer is that the developers don’t go and over develop it all. It would be nice to have a central urban area streetscape and having the buildings set back so that not everything’s on top of you. There should be park squares and gardens.

Smile like you mean it

ABSOLUTELY REVEAL THE SECRETS TO A SHOWSTOPPING SMILE I LOVE STRAIGHT TEETH

W

hat are Holly Willoughby & Kate Middleton’s secrets to a natural smile and beautifully straight teeth? Absolutely reveals them in our exclusive Free Guide to a sensational smile that you can get in just a few months for the ultimate beauty accessory, which never goes out of fashion. Unfortunately, having a sparkling smile used to entail the unwelcomed prospect of visiting an old-fashioned scary dentist. And for those of you that put up with the (usually perfect pearly white smiled) dentist, you would then have to endure two years of pain and misery, not to mention the unsightly appearance and embarrassment of a brace. But these years of torture can now be a thing of the past. Kate Middleton prepared for her big day in the spotlight by having her teeth discreetly straightened using a technique to create perfectly ‘imperfect’ details called micro rotations. Other celebrities who have

had cosmetic teeth straightening are Holly Willoughby & Myleene Klass. To make it simple there are three main treatments that can deliver an A-list smile in just a few months. The Front Smile Aligner is a removable teeth straightening gadget perfect

for improving the upper or lower front teeth. The Six Month I.C.E brace is an ice white discreet brace that can handle even tougher cases. And the Hidden i360 is a clever hidden brace that sits behind your teeth working invisibly while you get on with your day. With these cunning treatments you too could have a straight smile by summer 2013. For Absolutely readers ilovestraightteeth.

co.uk – a resource produced by Putney’s very own Alkali Dental Studios – are offering a free guide explaining all about this exciting new treatment. Cosmetic Dentist Dr Aalok Y Shukla, founder of Alkali Dental Studios & Ilovestraightteeth, noticed more and more adults coming to visit him from all over London, and many more who would have loved the treatment but just didn’t know it was possible. He wrote this guide as he found people were confused and unaware of what could be done for them. So, if you are thinking of getting a straighter smile why not email hello@alkaliaesthetics.co.uk and ask for your free guide to straight teeth in just a few months? For anyone thinking of getting straighter teeth by July 2013, I love straight teeth has teamed up with Absolutely to offer five A-List Whitening Bonus packages worth £499 with their braces package. TREATMENT OF THE MONTH: CRYSTAL CLEAR OXYGEN THERAPY The new facial to give a glow this winter

What is it? The skin is exfoliated using Crystal Clear Microdermabrasion. Restructuring serum is then smoothed deep into the skin via the pressure of the oxygen. Experience? Relaxing. The sensation of the oxygen pressure is firm and cold and slightly tickles on the neck. Who has it? Madonna and Kate Moss. Result? Helps improve elasticity and firmness of the skin. Clapham-based master personal trainer James Austin has an impressive list of high-profi le clients all over the capital including BBC presenter and the Observer journalist Lucy Siegel, who claims that James is the secret of her slim physique. And it’s not difficult to see why his technique is so effective; he has the ability to push you in a charming way whilst making you challenge yourself. On a mission to work on my arms and overall toning – particularly my triceps – he guided me through resistance work using the machines in gyms, though we’ve also trained on Hampstead Heath which is equally brilliant. We’re now working on strengthening the central core, via lots of exercises relying on balance and varying intensity of repetitions, plus we do a bit of boxing which I love as it allows me to build up my strength and muscle tone. 143 Clapham Road, SW9, 07919 355544; jamesaustinpt.co.uk 59

A Designer’s Life A BRIEF ENCOUNTER... WITH DAVID LINLEY

My idea of heaven is… A day in the workshop creating a beautiful piece of furniture. When I walk into a room I... Think about the architecture and the proportions of the building. The thing I’m proudest of is… My two wonderful children. Something I wish I was better at is… Answering questionnaires! I would describe my style as… Discreet but discerning. The best advice I ever got was… If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again! The book that changed my life was… The first book I wrote Classical Furniture which allowed me to explore the classical aesthetics that I admire.

My lucky break was… Launching my first furniture collection at Christie’s in 1985, when Sir Roy Strong commented that ‘Linley furniture would be the antiques of the future.’ If I could choose someone to write the soundtrack to my life it would be… Van Morrison. My best buy ever was… The showroom at 60 Pimlico Road. The best present I ever received was… A bandsaw from my mother. The best way to buy furniture is... Don’t be afraid to mix old with new. Antiques and contemporary furniture sit very happily side-by-side. The same applies to art. The thing that gets me down is… Man’s inhumanity to man.

HOUSE& GARDEN

The most important thing about interiors is... Maximising light via mirrors, colours and, of course, clever lighting schemes. Lighting can make or break an interior and can determine the atmosphere of the room.

My favourite saying is… ‘I dream of things that never were… and say why not?’ The best hour of the day is… 12pm, half way between elevenses and lunch. My idea of a good night out is… A delicious meal at The Markham Inn with my wife Serena.

And the perfect night in would be… Teaching my children to make drop scones. At weekends I most enjoy… Walking along Pimlico Road, chatting to customers in the showroom, then visiting the farmer’s market in Orange Square before lunch at Daylesford. Someone whose style I admire is… My father, Lord Snowdon.

My favourite holiday is… With my family at our house in the Luberon, Haute-Provence. I visit the local markets in Banon where you can buy Provencal quilts, lavender soaps and lots of goats’ cheese. What people might not know about me is… I like to polish my shoes until they are so shiny I can see my own reflection. 020 7730 7300. davidlinley.com 65

Christmas Cake If you’re more of a purist when it comes to your Christmas cake, this recipe is the one for you. It’s packed with dried fruit and roasted nuts, and, of course, delicious French brandy!

SERVES 8

Preparation time: overnight soaking, + 25 minutes Cooking time: 3½–4 hours 350g (12oz) golden sultanas 350g (12oz) raisins ¼ bottle brandy 350g (12oz) unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing 200g (7oz) good-quality dark chocolate (about 70% cocoa solids), broken into pieces 200g (7oz) dark soft brown sugar 100g (3 ½ oz) molasses sugar 4 large eggs 300g (11oz) plain flour, sifted 2 tsp ground mixed spice 1 tsp ground cinnamon finely grated rind and juice of 3 lemons 150g (5oz) chopped mixed peel 100g (3½oz) glacé cherries

50g (2oz) walnut halves 50g (2oz) shelled whole hazelnuts, roasted (see tip page xx) 1 Soak the sultanas and raisins in about 150ml (5fl oz) of the brandy in a covered bowl overnight. 2 Preheat the oven to 150ºC(fan 130ºC)/300ºF/gas mark 2. Grease a 20cm (8in) diameter deep cake tin with extra butter and doubleline the base and sides with enough baking paper that the paper stands a little above the sides of the tin. 3 Put the chocolate pieces in a heatproof bowl that fits over a pan of gently simmering water (the base must not touch the water), and stir until it melts. Leave to cool slightly. 4 In the bowl of your blender/processor, using the power beater attachment, cream the measured butter and the sugars together at high speed, until the mixture is light, pale and fluffy. Add the melted chocolate and then the eggs, mixing them in at a slower speed. (Add a little flour if the mixture looks like it may split.) Scrape down the sides occasionally, and mix until

everything is incorporated and well blended. 5 Sift on the flour and spices, followed by another 150ml (5fl oz) of the brandy along with the lemon rind and juice. Mix together well then stir in the fruit and nuts gently, without breaking the cherries or walnuts. 6 When combined well, spoon into the prepared tin and level the surface. Cover the top with a disc of baking paper and bake in the preheated oven for 3½–4 hours or until a thin-bladed knife inserted comes out clean. 7 Let the cake cool down in the tin, and then turn it out on to a wire rack. Peel off the lining paper and pour on some more brandy (there will be a bit left in the bottle) while still warm. When cold, add some more brandy to taste, then wrap in clingfilm and store in a cool dry place until ready to be decorated (see the royal icing recipe on page 00) in time for Christmas. This cake can be stored in an airtight tin for up to six months – but make sure you feed it regularly with brandy.

Chocolate and Chestnut Yule Log Preparation time: about 1 hour Cooking time: 10 minutes FOR THE SPONGE 3 egg whites 130g (4¾oz) golden caster sugar 4 egg yolks 50g (2oz) unsalted butter, melted 100g (3½oz) plain flour 2 tsp baking powder 50ml (2fl oz) dark rum For the chestnut cream 100ml (3½fl oz) double cream 400g (14oz) crème de marrons (sweet chestnut purée or spread, available in good supermarkets and suppliers) FOR THE CHOCOLATE GLAZE 150g (5oz) dark chocolate, broken into pieces 50g (2oz) unsalted butter 2 tbsp golden icing sugar FOR THE DECORATION chocolate shavings, a few marrons glacés, halved icing sugar

a pastry brush. Spread the chestnut cream on to the sponge with a palette knife then, using the silicone paper or mat, gently roll the filled sponge up nice and tight. Place on a serving plate, join down, and cut the ends at an angle. Save one of these ends to use as a ‘branch’ when glazing with the chocolate glaze. 9 Now make the chocolate glaze. Melt the chocolate in a bain-marie, stirring occasionally, then add the butter and sugar. Leave to cool down. 10 Using a palette knife, cover the whole log with the chocolate glaze. Cover the saved end with glaze too, and stick it on top to mimic a branch. With a fork decorate all over for a wood effect. Place a few chocolate shavings and pieces of marrons glacés on top, and dust with icing sugar. Eric Lanlard, Master Pâtissier and twice winner of the prestigious Continental Pâtissier of the Year at the British Baking Awards, has earned himself an international reputation for superlative baked creations for an impressive A-list clientele, including Madonna and Sir Elton John. Having trained in France, Eric moved to London where he ran the patisserie business for Albert and Michel Roux. He stayed there for five years before launching his own business, Cake Boy, a destination café, cake emporium and cookery school based in London.

1 Preheat the oven to 220ºC (fan 200ºC)/425ºF/gas mark 7. Cover a baking sheet with silicone paper.

2 To start the sponge, beat the egg whites until stiff with an electric hand whisk, then gradually add 50g (2oz) of the golden caster sugar. 3 In a separate bowl, beat the egg yolks with the remaining sugar until the mixture is fluffy and white. Stir in the melted butter. 4 Sift the flour with the baking powder into the egg yolk mixture, then fold all the ingredients together. Mix in a little of the whipped egg white, then gently fold in the remainder. 5 Spread the mixture on to the silicone on the baking tray with a palette knife, rather like making a Swiss roll. Bake in the preheated oven for 10 minutes, but you must keep an eye on it as it cooks fast! 6 When out of the oven, cover the sponge with a damp tea-towel to stop it drying. 7 To make the chestnut cream, in a large bowl, using an electric hand whisk, beat the cream to soft peaks, then fold in the crème de marrons. 8 To construct the cake, firstly soak the sponge with the dark rum, using

Transform your home REVIEWING OR REVAMPING, LITTLE CHANGES CAN HAVE BIG IMPACTS DIAMOND CONSTRUCTIONS LTD

T

here is a time, usually when you can sit down with a big cup of tea and look around the house. that you imagine life in a new home. You dream of stripping the peeling wallpaper off the walls and fantasise about smashing the old kitchen island to pieces (that looked so good 20 years ago, but the marble surface is all stained and weathered now.) You envisage the basement with its endless, useless items from the past as a studio and the mouldy shed at the end of the garden as a brand new place to relax. Your mental renovation plan is set – you just need a helping hand to put the plan into practice. Diamond Construction Ltd can transform all your wishful thinking and turn it into a reality. It doesn’t have to be a monumental operation – it can be anything from refitting a window or door, to building a completely new house entirely. They know that there is nothing worse than picturing something so vividly only

Eric Lanlard TV’S STAR PASTRY CHEF SPEAKS TO ABSOLUTELY ABOUT HIS PUTNEY RESTAURANT, COOKERY SCHOOL AND FAVOURITE WANDWORTH HAUNTS

What are you up to at the moment? I have just finished shooting my next book which will be out in 2013 and I’m still promoting my current book Tart it Up! The book is all about sweet and savoury tarts and pies – it’s the first time that I’ve included savoury baking in a book. How did you go into TV? Our cakes – particularly our wedding and celebration cakes started getting lots of attention and a producer came knocking on the door. Proudest moments? Too many to mention but finishing best pastry chef in my region was a very special moment and then going on to finish second best apprentice patissier in the whole of France. Opening Cake Boy, my Putney cake emporium, five years ago was a ‘stand out’ moment and a dream come true. It includes a cookery school and glamorous lounge area – it’s for people to eat cakes, bake cakes and chill out with a glass of champagne or two! Favourite thing to bake? At home I like rustic baking – my favourite pudding being a Pear Tarte Tatin. In my professional kitchen I love a bit of glamour – so my Tower of Desserts – is pretty show-stopping and can be used to celebrate birthdays or weddings. What can people expect from the classes you offer there? I do demos and the recipes tie-in with the theme of the class. By the end of the day the students are putting the final touches to their baking.

What will they eat for lunch? It will be seasonal – using fresh ingredients – I cook the lunch and we’ll always have a fine wine to go with it. Is it all French inspired? Not at all. Sometimes classic Breton recipes – it really depends on the class – what we are baking and what has inspired me that week or even that morning. Where does your inspiration come from? I love to travel and try out new restaurants, new produce and ingredients – so often it comes from that. I love experimenting with different flavours and working out a recipe based around them. I think if you are creative you can take inspiration from anywhere and everywhere. Sweet or savoury? Believe it or not I do not actually have a sweet tooth – give me a plate of cheese and I am a very happy man.

Why do you like living in Wandsworth? It’s full of interesting people. I love the greenness of Wandsworth – we live between the commons and it’s wonderful. It feels like a village. It’s local to where I work and has a lot to offer in terms of great restaurants and pubs. Which chef do you most admire? The Roux Brothers – they look after me, they were so generous in their encouragement. I worked with them when I first came to London and stayed with them for five years – running their pastry kitchen. We are still great friends today. Top Tips for the perfect Christmas cake… Use a good recipe and the best ingredients that you can lay your hands on. Ensure that your dried fruit is plump and not ‘dry’. Use golden caster sugar and pure vanilla extract (my favourite brand is Nielsen Massey) – a must for flavour. Remember that baking is like chemistry – follow the recipe and use an oven thermometer to check the temperature of your oven. 73

Restaurant review SUPPER IN A PEAR TREE SISTERS ARE DOING IT FOR THEMSELVES

S

upper In A Pear Tree caters for the creatively minded palette – both of the culinary and painterly persuasion. The brainchild of sisters Charlotte Partridge (a Charles Cecil-trained artist) and chef Annabel (who trained at the Michelin-starred Petersham Nurseries), the duo combine their artistic and gastronomic flair on the last Thursday of every month for an evening that puts the ‘art’ into hearty fun. Upon arrival, guests are welcomed with a rich glass of velvety red wine and the sound of melodic acoustic music playing softly in the background, before you get down in earnest to the serious business of life drawing. Initially, it’s each to their own as you and your charcoal are left to your own devices. Charlotte then demonstrates the technique, after which it’s back to the drawing board to see the vast improvement the method makes. After all is smudged and shaded, the hearty three-course dinner is served around a big communal table with the other 20-odd guests. The menu,

meanwhile, is inspired by Annabel’s recent trip to a spelt farm – a very much in vogue nutritional alternative to wheat. Its deep, nut-like flavour compliments the menu

perfectly. First up are spelt bread sticks served with a walnut pesto, anchovies, olives, capers and parsley lemon olive oil. Simple and delicious. The main course was an incredibly tender lamb shoulder with a ras el hanout home-made spice mix, and mint and cucumber yogurt dressing. This is served with onion squash, which boasted a delicate and mellow chestnut-like flavour, plus pearled spelt and shaved raddiccio. The combination of nutty flavours, tender textures and wholesome spelt grains, provides a triumphant and toothsome experience, well contrasted by the rich creamy, cold yoghurt and slightly spicy gravy. We finish with tarte tatin and crème fraîche, homemade ginger and blackcurrant vodka and candied ginger florentines. The sweet, spicy sugar and spirit hit ensures that we all leave on a high. Picasso or not, if you want to have fun, meet new people and eat something seasonal and sumptuous, Supper in a Pear Tree is just the thing. £30 per head including a glass of wine on arrival, a life drawing class and three-course dinner. Christmas has arrived with a bang at Carluccio’s; with every bow tied and every gift hand-wrapped. Spoil yourself with their festive offerings and tuck into their Christmas menu at the restaurant. You can also attend one of their festive events, or shop online for their new range of gifts & stocking fillers. Brewhouse Street, Putney Wharf, SW15, 020 8789 0591; carluccios.com It’s nearly the time of year when company bosses get a little over excited and show off their ‘robot dance moves’ under the mistletoe. It’s the busiest period of the year for our business. Office juniors are tasked with the important job of organising the office party and are (understandably) nervous that it’s a success. Having hosted many a Christmas party in our London venues over the past six years, I have made various observations. A key ingredient is ensuring there is as much food as drink to avoid early casualties. Venues with live acts also help break the ice during the initial awkward moments. Ideally, sit down dinners are best avoided so there are no complications with the table plan and you don’t get stuck with the IT guy! The bit I am always sad about is not being around to see the state of the office the next morning and a rather sheepish boss crawling in late hugging a can of coke. I feel a certain responsibility for the ensuing lack of productivity. Charlie owns and runs a group of bars/clubs/ restaurants in SW London. inception-group.com

THE BEDROOM

With a door-less, curtain-less shower carved out from the sandstone bedroom wall and its equally pleasing and spacious freestanding bath lying just at the end of an oversized bed, rooms at The Scarlet immediately impress with their flair and originality. Each is different, but all are equally inviting; our bath looked out onto a decked and roomy courtyard, while a modern staircase beside the open shower led up to a lighthouse-like turret, from where splendid views of the vast beach below were enjoyed on the padded cushions and lounge area. The sustainability theme continues into the bedrooms, where hot water is warmed by a biomass boiler which burns on wood chips, while all the products are natural.

Do not miss the host of treatments (all carried out with The Scarlet’s own range of Ayurvedic products) on offer at the in-house spa. Try the facials administered with wild-crafted herbs and hot-steamed poultices or the ultra special twoperson rhassoul (a steam and hammam). To further spoil, there are yoga, meditation and mother and baby classes, plus there’s the un-chlorinated indoor swimming pool and reed-filtered natural cliff top outdoor pool, the latter of whose nearby hot tubs provide the perfect spot from which to cloud-gaze.

THE RESTAURANTS

Before you even taste the freshly-caught, elegantly presented Cornish grub served up at The Scarlet’s restaurant, it’s hard not to fall for the views – framed by tall glass windows – across Mawgan Porth. Meanwhile, back in the kitchen, chef Tom Hunter adheres strictly to the seasons, meaning that while fish is constantly on the menu alongside a range of delicious cuts of meat and vegetarian options, all side dishes, salads and mains are characterised by the freshest and most locally sourced produce. This applies to the entirety of the menu, so expect generous helpings of hearty grouse and red cabbage in the autumn, and puddings laced irresistibly with fresh berries in the summer.

THE BATHROOMS

Monochrome bathrooms boast both luxurious baths and spacious monsoon showers, as well as thick towels, fluff y robes and generous supplies of luscious REN products. If modesty prevails, a sheer curtain separates the open bathing area from the main bedroom.

TALEON IMPERIAL HOTEL, ST. PETERSBURG

It may possibly be a bad thing that once you arrive at the Taleon Imperial Hotel you find it difficult to leave. Fortunately for those who do manage to haul themselves out of the massive marblecovered en-suite jacuzzi, or the top floor spa (where you can look out over the the city’s roofs) – there is a long list of sights just a stone’s throw away. The hotel is at the heart of where the Moika River and the Nevsky Prospect (St Petersburg’s main vein) intersect. And if a five-minute walk to the State Hermitage Museum, Winter Palace, Palace Square, Kazan Cathedral, and all the many exclusive shops seem a little strenuous; the concierge can organise for a water taxi, or a speed boat in the summer to pick you up at the quay, just outside the front of the hotel. If, for some reason, you’re feeling lethargic from Imperial Palaces and great works of art and architecture and you need a night in, the hotel

has three restaurants; the gourmet Taleon restaurant, the Russian cuisine restaurant Victoria and Gastro bar Griboedov. You can try both Russian delicacies and continental cuisine if you’re feeling a little over-borsched. The bar staff at the Griboedov make a mean cocktail – do not be afraid to ask for a White Russian. After you’re suitably full and sleepy, and perhaps after having one of the hotel’s rare cognacs, you can retire to one of 89 rooms, which are all unique, with a mixture of old splendor and décor and modern technology. So as well as knowing that no-one else in the hotel has an identical room, there is also a 24-hour butler service and housekeeping. Whether it’s a week or a weekend, the general consensus is that you feel as if you’ve stayed in a palace, and that’s not exactly wrong. The Taleon is the only hotel in St Petersburg that is a restored Palace from the Tsarist era. Luckily you can experience all the perks of the Tsars minus the deposing and revolution.

One-of-a-Kind stays at the Taleon Imperial Hotel start from £2,000 with a two night stay for two in a superior suite, and including a tour of Pavlovsk, Troika horse riding, a Russian banya experience, tickets to the Hermitage Museum and dinner at the Taleon, as well as a history tour of the hotel. We travelled as a guest of The Taleon Imperial Hotel (www.lhw.com/taleon) and British Airways (www.ba.com). VILLA MAGNA, MADRID

There’s endless negativity about Spain’s future these days and no message bar economic gloom seems to emanate from its fine capital. But what about the reality that Madrid continues to beat the effervescent drum that for decades has meant this fountain-laden, gastronomic hot bed of festivals, fiestas, bullfights and fervent national identity, is considered one of the most popular cities of the world? Villa Magna is by far

the city’s most luxurious hotel and is testament to the committed interest the Spanish still have with luxury. A recent renovation has seen Villa Magna stay true to its classic style, with abundant black onyx and white marble, but it contrasts successfully with a striking collection of contemporary art. Spoilt as you are on the streets for food, the hotel offers four places for a heady dose of exquisite cuisine, though the Restaurant Villa Magna, where Chef Manual Gutierrez boasts outstanding culinary skill, is this hotel’s gastronomic pièce de résistance. The hotel is situated a moment’s walk from the city’s celebrated Art Triangle, but for those more sporty, the Real Madrid Bernabeu stadium isn’t far in the other direction. But perhaps you’ll never want to leave Villa Magna’s walls, especially when you learn that the Real and Royal suites, or should we say, small apartments, come equipped with sumptuous Turkish baths and private terraces which look out over what continues to be one of Europe’s most thrilling cities.

REGINA BAGLIONI, ROME

With its evocative combination of ancient ruins, Renaissance art, historic churches and statue-laden piazzas, it’s easy to see why the Eternal City remains so enduringly beguiling. Plump for a stay at the Regina Hotel Baglioni, ideally located for exploring the nearby Spanish Steps, the gardens of the Villa Borghese and the glamorous stores on Via Condotti. Once a royal palace, the Baglioni is now a wellestablished grande dame with a hint of art deco-infused elegance – a perfect antidote to the city’s bustling streets. Under the expert direction of the hotel’s friendly concierge, you’ll discover a plethora of local hidden gems, from affordable trattorie to well-loved gelaterie. Marvel at the Sistine Chapel courtesy of a ‘skip-the-

line’ early morning tour of the Vatican, where you’ll avoid lengthy queues and benefit from the expertise of well-informed guides, who’ll bring the works of Raphael and Michelangelo to life before your eyes. Stroll across the River Tiber to explore the cobbled streets of Trastevere, wander through the food market at Campo de’ Fiori and pause for a pick-me-up at Caffè Greco, one of the city’s oldest pit-stops. And with the Pantheon and the Coliseum providing a spectacular backdrop to this constantly evolving city, you’ll find yourself plotting a return tour within moments of your arrival. Skip the Line Vatican Museums SmallGroup Tour, including Sistine Chapel and St Peter’s Basilica, from £69.61p pp, Viator (www.viator.com). Regina Hotel Baglioni, Rome (00 39 06 421111, www.baglionihotels.com) offers rooms from £236 per room, per night, based on two adults sharing. Monarch (www.monarch.co.uk) operates flights from London Luton to Rome with fares, including taxes, starting from £126.99 return. 83

THE LEELA PALACE, UDAIPUR

A solitary fat pigeon pecks around for snacks in the brilliant sun and deep shadows of the ancient inner courtyard of Ganesh, a cavernous warehouse shop in the ‘Land of the Kings’, or in other words, the north-western Indian region of Rajasthan. Pigeons are sacred to Hindus which means they are protected and fed. To me they’ve always seemed pretty pointless birds. Looking down from a window seat on the second floor, I watch the fat one flitting hopefully about the restored beauty of the 17th-century cantilevered white stone balconies. Opportunities for sightseeing in India fall into two distinct categories: the obviously spectacular, like the Red Fort In Delhi and the incidentally spectacular, such as the wedding processions of shy brides and proud grooms riding their decorated horses through the remote rural villages. And then, of course, there is the pigeon in the courtyard. One floor up, my companions are finding great treasures among the best selection of

kaftans in Rajasthan. They are encouraged by the prices and the fact that Sarah Burton, head honcho at Alexander McQueen, sacrosanct after her star turn at the royal wedding last year, was a customer here a few days earlier. Later that day, shopping at Udaipur’s exclusive Andraab boutique, I succumb to a finely woven scarlet cashmere pashmina, though seemingly it’s not so much of a ‘discovery’ as I’d first thought; it’s not long until I am told that the shop is a favourite of Judi Dench. It is here, in the lake city of Udaipur – a short flight from Delhi – that our experience of new India begins. The sun is going down and we are thankful for the damp westerly wind that cools us as we make our way down the long avenue of one of the city’s many grand parks to the cremation site of Mahatma Ghandi. This vast, flat memorial stone is the size of a small football pitch and is decorated by a single eternal flame, though the absence of ornament only adds to its power. It is singularly moving to watch the – mostly Indian – visitors stop to compose themselves before placing their floral tributes on the marble edifice. The chimneys of a grim-looking coal

power station meanwhile rise into the sky above the park’s tree line, and in the near distance, a man kneels on the grass facing Mecca, lost in prayer, a sacred stillness disturbed by the roar of insane traffic on the nearby road. The endless competition of car horns, spluttering rickshaws and speeding motor scooters is the mash-up that forms the soundtrack of the new India. It’s time to adjourn for a sundowner in the shameless glamour of the Library Bar in the Leela Palace Hotel, where the signature cocktail involves vodka and, believe it or not, a special machine that infuses the drink with cigar smoke. This hotel and its sister in Udaipur are a clever mix of the familiar and the exotic; the nervous traveller feels confident and the more adventurous doesn’t pine for authenticity. The rooms have extravagant lighting menus and are decorated with luxury textiles and original contemporary Indian art. Personal butlers are available to all, but there is a free Rolls Royce Phantom with the top suite. The food is a high point in both hotels but the jewel in the crown in Delhi is the classical Indian cuisine of the Jamavar and

THE LEELA PALACE, NEW DELHI

a cookery lesson with the head chef, which provides a good alternative to shopping, particularly as, in the Old Delhi market, that means perching precariously on bicycle rickshaws and becoming part of the crazy traffic system. Before setting off for Udaipur we visit the ancient Qutub Minar, a tomb built in 1199 and a Unesco World Heritage site it’s the one to see in Delhi if you only have time for one site. ‘You gotta love my Banynan tree’ says Reggie Sing, our handsome host, a cousin of the Maharajah of Jodhpur and a larger-than-life throw back to the last days of the Raj. We are sitting at a massive table in the garden, laden with a feast and being waited on by men wearing army uniforms and saffron festival turbans. It is a scene straight from a Bollywood movie and we are grateful for the shade of Reggie’s Banynan tree as we have already had two large Pimm’s, mixed by the man himself. A Van Morrisson CD blasts out from the colonial-style bungalow lounge into the surrounding valley and mountains. We’ve popped in to The

Mountbatten Lodge on our way to visit the Jain temple at Ranakpur. If you go, ask him to tell the story of how he just missed out on becoming a king. Glorious though it is, I wouldn’t advise drinking two large Pimm’s before visiting the extraordinary Adinatha Jain Temple; it makes negotiating the 24 pillared halls and focusing on the extravagant detail of the 1444 marble pillars that bit trickier. But this is an experience of old India which is simply unbeatable. We are lucky to be travelling over the wedding season when young brides dressed walk in giggling gangs to the local village to make their matrimonial purchases. We come across dashing grooms riding proudly on decorated horses behind processions of musicians and karaoke vans blasting out Bollywood hits. You get a clue as to village activity from the colour of the turbans worn by the bare-chested locals: red for shepherd, green for carpenter, gold for priest. Back at Leela Palace on the shores of the romantic Lake Pichola in time to watch the sun set over Udaipur City Palace, I pondered

how it doesn’t get much better than this – until, that is, my iPad suddenly packs up. Reception sends a sort of cyber butler up immediately – a charming young chap with a degree in IT who arrives to fix it while I stand on the balcony and watch another youth dressed in the traditional long kuta shirt waving a flag and chasing pigeons in the grounds of a neighbouring hotel. I am told these professional pigeon chasers are employed to save buildings from the birds’ droppings because it is against the Hindu religion to put spikes on the buildings. Though of similar ages, the pigeon chaser confidently preserves the best of ancient India, while the cyber butler shapes her future. Suddenly, a pair of these fat birds land on my balcony. I find myself thinking that they are actually really quite pretty... A 7 night trip to Delhi and Udaipur costs from £2,350 per person with 2 nights at The Leela Palace New Delhi and 5 nights at The Leela Palace Udaipur including return economy class flights and transfers. abercrombiekent.co.uk or 0845 618 2214. theleela.com 89

amily is often the reason why people move home or relocate. Be it upsizing or downsizing to a family’s needs, getting into school catchment areas or simply to be closer to loved ones, family is usually the common theme. I moved to Southfields from Chiswick nearly 10 years ago so that I could be closer to family as my sister lived on the sought after ‘Grid’. The family friendly atmosphere here is one of the many attractions to moving to SW18, and, sure enough, not long after I set up home here, my brother started house hunting. It was then that I first dealt with KFH, and being impressed with their business, I decided to make a career move from the hospitality industry to estate agency and have worked for KFH here in Southfields ever since. I have seen the property market wax and wane, enjoyed the highs and knuckled down during the lows but KFH, one of the oldest on the high street is still thriving. The ‘Grid’ is the most sought after area, although the Southfields Triangle Conservation area is closer to the two most popular primary schools – Sheringdale and St Michaels Primary school. The houses here are mainly Edwardian terraces with private gardens and are snapped up very quickly by young families, as the area is now well established as part of the SW London nappy valley set. With supply low and demand high, we are currently seeing multiple offers on properties going to sealed bids. This is especially prevalent on properties with large gardens and which offer

Property ITOW2.indd 99

a degree of renovation or uplift potential. Another demographic we’re seeing is young professionals keen to get onto the property ladder and they tend to invest in the more competitively priced flats located further up the hill towards Wimbledon Common and along Wimbledon Park Road. Since 2009, we’ve noticed a sharp increase in prices, and over the last year there have been increases of up to 10 per cent in the area. To give an indication, a property which sold for between £750,000-£800,000 last year is now achieving in the region of £850,000-£900,000. Property developers are increasingly keen to piggyback on the areas success and our Land & New Homes branch is offering new developments such as ‘The Edge’ on Merton Road, which is a lovely new build scheme comprising of fourteen apartments. The Olive Garden on Replingham Road is one of my favourite restaurants because it’s independently owned and has character. It’s become very popular with local families and singletons alike. Likewise, the local butcher on the same street has a great reputation and I’ve already been in to order my Christmas turkey. Southfields is home to a variety of independent shops and has recently welcomed some supermarket brands – a key indication of a thriving area. A favourite weekend pastime of mine is browsing the Villeroy & Boch Factory Shop on Merton Road, but really, how many more teacups does one person need? Seasons Greetings WE WISH YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM THE BEST STREETS OF SW

FROM ALL FOUR CORNERS OF JOHN D WOOD, SW BATTERSEA

John D Wood & Co. is proud to be the sole sponsor at this year’s Carols in the Square. Once again the event will take place in Battersea Square on Tuesday 4th December. At 7.15 the Mayor of Wandsworth will switch on the lights and there will be ‘snow’ and other festive surprises. More carol singing will follow with mulled wine, mince pies, hot chocolate and soup on offer. Official proceedings finish at about 7.45 but the bars, pubs and shops will be open to welcome customers warmly throughout the evening.

CLAPHAM

John D Wood & Co. in Clapham is delighted to be sponsoring both the Bertrum House Christmas Bazaar on the 24th of November and the Bonneville School Christmas Fair on 9th December. The Bertrum Bazaar will run from 2 – 4.30pm, with a Fortnum and Mason hamper donated by our Clapham office up for grabs in the raffle, with John D Wood & Co. canvas shoppers due to be given away as goody bags. The Bonneville School Christmas Fair will run from 1 – 4pm and our sales and lettings staff will be painting friendly faces all day.

WANDSWORTH

To mark the start of a new partnership between Swaffield Primary School and John D wood & Co. Wandsworth, we are supporting the Swaffield Winter Wonderland on 7th December. Festivities kick off at 3.00pm with fun and games, local traders selling gifts and stocking fillers, mince pies, mulled wine and lots more. Look out for the John D Wood & Co. boards around SW18 for more information.

WIMBLEDON

A successful autumn for Paul Lintott in Wimbledon. “At the time of writing we have agreed sales on 40% of a near record stock level! The last few weeks have been the most balanced trading environment I have known in 13 years of working here, combining healthy stock levels and a strong appetite from buyers. The positivity surrounding the UK economy getting back on track can only help maintain or improve the market into 2013.” johndwood.co.uk

HAPPY CHRISTMAS FROM SIMON SCOTT

Firstly I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the readers of Absolutely magazine a very merry Christmas and a happy new year. To all of our on-going long term clients and to those who have used Jacksons for the first time this year we also wish you all the very best for the festive season and we thank you for your custom. The yuletide period is often viewed by house sellers or landlords as being a time where certain other priorities take over and why not? Christmas will always take precedent over anything else that may be going on during the month of December. However, between Christmas and New year portals such rightmove.co.uk and primelocation.com see a very large rise in the number of people looking for property, annual figures show that this has regularly been one of the busiest times for property site visits within the whole year. At Jacksons we see the same trends with nearly 25% more traffic flowing through our website during this time than at any other point in the year. This means those people who are able to get their property onto the market before Christmas can reap very large rewards and expose their home to a very high number of prospective purchasers or tenants. Our recommendation to anyone who is looking to sell or let in the New Year is to get the marketing of your property underway before this rush starts, we can easily get photos, floorplans and marketing material made up for your abode well before Christmas and make sure that you are exposed to one of the highest influxes of buyers and tenants that the annual property market sees. 020 3195 9111; jacksonsestateagents.com

DOUGLAS AND GORDON CHRISTMAS

Each year Douglas and Gordon helps Kids Company to ensure that over 2,000 food hampers are hand delivered to families most in need over the Christmas period. Kids Company’s services and support empower children who have experienced enormous challenges to lead positive and fulfilling lives. D&G travels through its area on 6 December collecting donations of non-perishable food and new, packaged toys. If you’re not in on the day, your local D&G office will happily accept any donations until the big day. They will be operating skeleton staff all day but usual service won’t be too hampered, and after all, it is for a very good cause. douglasgordon.com/kidsco.org.uk

On the 28th October, four members of Kinleigh Folkard & Hayward, one of London’s largest estate agents with over 50 offices in London, took part in the Nike ‘Run to the Beat’ challenge, running 13.1 miles for their charity, The Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability. QUINTON SCOTT HAMMERS OUT EXPANSION PLAN

Quinton Scott have announced a merger with Andrews & Robertson – the fourth biggest STEPHEN N D PARSONS, HEAD auctioneers in London OF RESIDENTIAL SALES – who handle the sales of residential and commercial properties from John O’Groats to Lands’ End. The company will be called Andrew Scott Robertson. The combined operation will offer their joint expertise to new clients as well as old, covering properties in Wimbledon and surrounding areas. Stephen Parsons, (formally Operations Director at Gascoigne Pees), is the new head of Residential Sales and comments; ‘the merger of these two ambitious Companies reflects the appetite that we have as a business to strengthen our brand and grow our share of the local residential market place. The rebranding of our local estate agency offices with striking new colours and logos will reflect our appetite to develop this core and reflect what is already a formidable and highly respected business will shortly begin. Quinton Scott continue to list beautiful properties in SW19. They are proud to offer to the market this substantial linked detached 5 bedroom Victorian family house (featured above), located off the ever popular Worple Road. MARKET UPDATE

Both the residential sales and lettings markets have experienced a hike in not only asking price but the achieved prices in 2012. As the supply continues to dwindle prices march north as south west London continues to be a destination of choice for more and more affluent Londoners. With 2013 round the corner we are predicting it to be a buoyant year for both Sales and Lettings. The calibre of property that is offered to the market is improving year on year as both tenants and purchaser demand the type of quality product which the area now offers in abundance. PROPERTY ABSOLUTELY INSIDER...

With George Franks from Douglas & Gordon I don’t think we can shout it from the rooftops any louder but, at Douglas & Gordon, December is all about Kids Company Day. On the 6 th December all Douglas & Gordon offices close and the whole company scrounges for food on behalf of this incredibly worthy charity. You will see D&G branded hoodies wondering around the streets knocking on doors trying to scavenge anything from a can of baked beans to a packet of biscuits. There are other ways in which you can help – money collecting boxes will be located in all the offices and any new or unused toys will also be gratefully received by the 17,000 London children who are not only exceptionally vulnerable but have significant challenges in their family homes and huge threats within their neighbourhoods. Anything we can do to help these children over Christmas has got to be time well spent. 020 7924 2000; douglasandgordon.com

WHO SAYS SIZE MATTERS?

Absolutely

SW19

ROLAND SIMPSON, SALES MANAGER OF JACKSON-STOPS & STAFF, WIMBLEDON Favourite restaurant The Lawn Bistro is an excellent venue for an atmospheric supper with friends, with delicious seasonal menus created by Head Chef, Ollie Couillaud. The chorizo is superb. Most stylish boutique I love to cook and so for me it can only be Bailey and Sage, with their wonderful array of culinary delights, such as the delicious Iberico ham served at their extensive deli counter. Finest cocktail It has to be the (so far) unrivalled Bloody Mary served to perfection at Cannizaro House, best enjoyed whilst overlooking the wonderful views across Cannizaro Park.

Size is inevitably the first thing house hunters look at. So you might be forgiven for thinking that making yours as large would increase its value. Take a house in Hillier Road we’ve just sold – a real monster. The developer worked long and hard to make it bigger AUSTIN THOROGOOD, SALES DIRECTOR than anybody else’s, and when he unveiled it in all its glory, it aroused huge excitement (and offers) which climaxed in a week with a sale at the full asking price (£1.795m). Even if you can’t manage to enlarge yours, showing others just how huge it could become, (by getting planning for example) could really see it shoot in value. But if your property’s not so well-endowed or just lacks that vital couple of extra inches in width, there’s no need to get a complex. At John Thorogood we’re used to handling all shapes and sizes. And because we’re selling your home – not just square footage – we hit the spot. We believe, when it comes to estate agents, it’s not their size that counts but what they do for you – with us the client always comes first! Our family-run firm is perfectly formed to service your needs attentively. People love our one-on-one contact and intimate knowledge of their area. And as far as your property goes, we won’t just lie back and go through the motions. Big or small, it will get the exposure you’ve always dreamed of. So, if you want to be handled with care, get in touch. 020 7228 7474; john-thorogood.co.uk

Best kept secret John Page Butchers on Merton Hall Road provides a wonderful selection of meats and their staff are always unfailingly helpful and happy to share some great cooking tips. Lost hour It’s hard to beat a run through Wimbledon Common on a crisp, Wintry morning.

PROPERTY CHARLES MITCHELL, MANAGER OF DOUGLAS AND GORDON’S EAST PUTNEY BRANCH, ON THE BENEFITS OF BIG HOUSES It may sound obvious enough that the major advantage of buying big is space. Whilst many aspire to keeping up with the Jones’, there are many practical and financial benefits as well. Larger properties provide greater flexibility for families to grow into, and more often than not have larger gardens than a typical London terrace. With more internal space to play with, there is greater potential to reconfigure properties to meet individual needs. More importantly, the larger the space and flexibility in a property, the less likely you are to move. This ultimately avoids the disruptions of uprooting a family from friends and schools, while also saving money in the long term on stamp duty costs, removals and legal fees.

MALCOLM GEE, PARTNER OF HAWES & CO’S WIMBLEDON VILLAGE BRANCH, ON THE BENEFITS OF SMALL PROPERTIES

We all want to live in the best locations and it is lucky that there is a diverse range of property in all sizes to make this possible for a wide range of budgets. With average prices of large detached houses in the prime areas of Wimbledon Village selling for around £5 million, it is nice to know that it is still possible to buy a smaller property with the same grand scale for a fraction of the price. Grand conversion flats in prime roads within mansions that would sell for £5-£10 million as a whole house can be purchased at a dsitinctly lower price. PROPERTY ALISTER SHAW, MANAGER OF HAMPTONS PUTNEY PRESENTS ST. JOHN’S AVENUE, SW15, £1,999,950 FREEHOLD

A charming Grade II listed semi-detached house (3129 sq.ft.) located in the heart of Putney. The property is the original coach house to Roslyn Tower that it adjoins. Rosslyn Tower dates from the 1870s, and had Leonard Wyburd RA, one of Britain’s foremost Arts & Craft furniture designers, redesign the drawing room. His avant-garde style revolutionized the period and helped to launch Libertys (where he worked) in to the stratosphere. The Coach House’s rear reception room has sliding doors on the rear garden which is a magnificent size for such a central location and the kitchen has ample space for a dining table and side access to a patio area. 020 8780 0077; hamptons.co.uk

JOEL BASELEY DIRECTOR AT RAMPTON BASELEY PRESENTS CHATHAM ROAD, BATTERSEA, SW11, FROM £740,000

In 1862, what we now know as Chatham Road, was officially then named Bolingbroke Grove. It is thought that the name derived from Bolingbroke House which at the time fronted the common. By 1871 it had been rechristened to Chatham Road and Bolingbroke Grove had moved down to the lane running along the edge of Wandsworth Common. The latest development on Chatham Road is the beautiful “Cube Building”, a contemporary development of nine flats with a 4,000 square foot nursery school of the ground and lower ground floors. In one of the oldest roads between the commons it is extremely rare to find modern spacious, lateral apartments. 020 7228 5111, ramptonbaseley.com

KEVIN OAKES, DIRECTOR OF XANDERMATTHEW PRESENTS YORK ROAD, CLAPHAM JUNCTION, SW11, £375,000

‘Price’s Candles’ was founded by William Wilson in 1830, and originally consisted of a candle factory in Vauxhall, and a crushing mill upstream in York Road, Battersea. In 1840 there were 84 staff, and due to tremendous growth by 1900 Price’s was the largest manufacturer of candles in the world. The Battersea factory has now been converted into a modern restatement of Victorian industrial architecture. The interiors have been styled by the architect Paul Brookes, together with the renowned interior designers Carter Tyberghein. This contemporary one bedroom apartment situated in the development offers open plan living and luxury finish throughout. 020 3397 2099, xandermatthew.com

FIONA BOURKE LETTINGS MANAGER AT SULLIVAN THOMAS, WANDSWORTH PRESENTS EARLSFIELD ROAD, SW18, £850 PER WEEK

An immaculate, five bedroom Victorian family home located on the northern end of Earlsfield Road, with Wandsworth Common literally around the corner. Due to Earlsfield being developed relatively lately, a mainline station to provide transport links wasn’t built until 1884. The station was developed in place of a large Victorian dwelling called Earlsfield- hence the name we now use to refer to the area. The house benefits from a lovely lawned garden and off-street parking for two cars. The house is finished in an exceptionally high standard and boasts fantastic storage throughout. Offered unfurnished. Available now. 020 8682 3121; sullivanthomas.co.uk 141
