Absolutely Weddings WELCOME

Editor’s LETTER Weddings are unique – so that means it's fine to do things your own way and break a few conventions

T

hat's the lesson we've been taking to heart talking to leading lights of the wedding world. Joyce Young has dressed the best (including Michelle Obama), and her unique design signature is all about easy elegance. When she started out, weddings were more formal, but she has always believed in celebrating in your own style (see page 30). And British Designer of the Year Sassi Holford was generous in sharing with us one of her archive gowns for our Eighties Bride Fashion Moment (page 26). A fabulous and super-cool period piece, this was a trailblazer for the kind of day-intoevening styles we all want today. The inimitable Bruce Russell also shared with us some of his perspectives on the modern wedding (page 93). He told us that the biggest change in recent times is that couples are more confident about mixing formality with their own ideas. His belief is that all weddings should be totally personal to the couple, which brings us right back to: dare to be different. With that in mind, this issue is full of ideas for everything from venues and scenesetting to glorious bridal fashion. We hope it inspires you to set your own rules for your wedding day, and look forward to catching up with you at the shows – including Quintessentially Atelier (page 28). Happy planning!

Eighties Bride Sassi Holford’s 1989 ‘convertible’ wedding gown was the last word in bold style, winning a national award and helping set her label on course for the decades to come Wo r d s L I B B Y N O R M A N

F

ashion of the 1980s doesn’t get a fair press and, when it comes to bridal, it is usually defined by one famous royal dress. Yet this was the decade that saw both extreme romanticism and radical reinvention – these were extraordinary times. Still a defining British wedding label today, Sassi Holford started out in the dawn of the decade in the West Country. Self taught, Sassi had what she describes as: “the audacity of youth”. After making a gown for a friend in need, she moved on to make several more and decided she loved it. Her business was newly minted around the time Charles and Diana got married in 1981. Anyone who was there knows that wedding was a huge event, and with feverish anticipation about who would get the first royal copy out there. Sassi took on the challenge: “I sat up all night after the Royal Wedding and made a complete replica, right down to the 25-foot train. Then I got in my old car and drove it across Exmoor to Banbury’s department store in

BY THE AGE OF 21, SASSI HOLFORD WAS STOCKED IN LONDON’S ‘BIG THREE’ FOR BRIDAL Barnstaple, where I persuaded them to put it in the front window”. This singlehanded marketing coup garnered publicity, but replicas were not Sassi Holford’s speciality. She was developing an original look based around elegant lines with the finest fabrics. While full skirts and bows were hallmarks of the time and had to be in the mix, she also experimented with alternative takes, such as slinky evening-style gowns with jackets. Three years in – so by the age of 21 – Sassi Holford’s gowns were stocked in London’s then ‘big three’ for bridal – Dickins & Jones, Liberty

and Harrods. She says: “It does sound extraordinary now, but that’s what happened. Young people are resilient, resistant to knocks. If things didn’t go my way, I’d dust myself off and try again – and in the 1980s, young designers did have space to develop.” By 1987, Sassi had won the first of many awards; that defining first was for innovation. Innovator though Sassi certainly was, this 1989 gown was out there. The ruched and strapless bodice had a removable cummerbund belt featuring silk appliqué roses. A bolero jacket with leg-of-mutton sleeves topped off the gown. The skirt was the masterstroke. Wide and full, it was actually a removable top layer with a form-fitting skirt beneath. Here was one of the first wedding gowns specifically designed for easy day-toevening transformation. It was, says Sassi, a catchy idea and won a top award from Brides magazine. “It was not my most commercially successful design, but definitely a talking-point and attracted lots of publicity. Of course, weddings were different back then – parents were much more involved in decisions. This was a gown the bride might choose, but it was not going to be approved by her mother.” Looking at it now, the gown is resolutely ‘80s, but also a trailblazer. Sassi says: “It’s completely of its era with that sexy and exaggerated shape, but the concept is ahead of the times. Now most brides want one amazing gown with the versatility to take them from ceremony to party. So the idea of the adaptable gown still informs how we design for brides today.”

SASSI HOLFORD ~

has won multiple awards during her 35-year plus career – most recently Best British Bridal Designer at the 2016 Bridal Buyer Awards. Her Taunton boutique is also the company’s base, where every wedding gown is designed and handmade. The London flagship boutique recently moved to a new and larger Fulham Road location, where new collections for mothers of the bride and occasion goers have joined the main collection and London exclusive wedding gowns. sassiholford.com

Style MAKER With twin bases in London and Glasgow, Joyce Young OBE is a name synonymous with grownup style for brides and mothers of the bride. Absolutely Weddings meets a designer who believes easy elegance is always in style Wo r d s L I B B Y N O R M A N

J

oyce Young should be on every bride’s radar – and the radar of every bride’s mother. For more than 20 years she has been quietly flying the flag for the kind of relaxed and sophisticated UK-designedand-made dressing that makes us look and feel the part, however grand the occasion. Hers is a very grown-up and bespoke approach, with a keen eye for the cut, texture and details that ensure an outfit stands out from the crowd. When Joyce was awarded the OBE for services to Textiles and the Glasgow Community in the 2013 New Year Honours List, her loyal fan base reminded everyone: ‘we told you so’. While hers is a quiet success story (she’s modest about her achievements), she has not only clocked up some pretty formidable clients on home and international turf – Judy Murray and Michelle Obama among them – but has built a brand that is proudly Scottish through and through. Everything in the Joyce Young collections – bride, mother of the bride, occasion and her fabulous Tartan collections – is designed by her and made by a long-established team at her Glasgow HQ. It is, says Joyce, one of the key things that sets her apart. “If someone comes into my London or Glasgow boutique and asks how long it will take to design and make an outfit, we can ask: ‘when is your occasion?’. It’s never too early to choose a gown and always advisable to plan ahead, but our bespoke approach does enable us to create something to individual specifications in a short space of time”. 30   Spring / Summer 2017

ELEGANT CUT AND QUIRKY DETAILS ARE HALLMARKS OF ALL JOYCE YOUNG'S DESIGNS

THIS IS VERY GROWN-UP DRESSING – SAVVY AND SOPHISTICATED

Joyce trained at Glasgow School of Art and cut her teeth in the mid 1970s, initially designing for a key supplier to Marks & Spencer. This meant she was a frequent traveller between Glasgow and London. But designing blouses en masse just wasn’t for her – she loved fine fabrics too much – and she quickly set up in business with a friend making high-end occasion pieces under the Sequins label. It was one of the directors at the grand old Sauchiehall Street department store Dalys who first suggested that she and her then business partner should look at weddings, and go for the high end; that small first collection was bought by Dalys. While Joyce had successful forays into other areas – and cruisewear was extremely successful – all roads eventually led back to life’s really big occasions. Customers would come in and ask for wedding gowns in the same luxurious and easy style as her holiday pieces. THE FABULOUS TARTAN COLLECTIONS HAVE A The Joyce Young business WORLDWIDE CLIENT BASE as we know it began in 1993, and the first London boutique opened in Chiltern Street, W1 in 1999. This was her London base until 2014, when she relocated to leafy Belsize Park – a smart address and with much more space to show bride and mother-of-the-bride collections. Glasgow’s Maryhill Road is Joyce Young central, and visitors are treated to the most glamorous of period interiors (fantastically high ceilings and huge mirrors). Sometimes they even pop next door to the design studio to see their gown being made up. THE DESIGN PROCESS BEGINS BY CONSIDERING THE QUALITIES OF While Joyce Young’s approach to formal THE FABRICS – HOW THEY WILL dressing may fit very neatly into today’s WORK AS A GOWN more relaxed style, in the 1990s it was

“FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS SHE HAS BEEN QUIETLY FLYING THE FLAG FOR THE KIND OF RELAXED AND SOPHISTICATED UK-DESIGNED-ANDMADE DRESSING THAT MAKES US LOOK AND FEEL THE PART” different. Joyce says: “The Princess Diana full-skirt influence was still around back then. We were making unconventional outfits – wedding coats, wedding trousers and slimline gowns – always in the most luxurious fabrics”. That style has remained part of the Joyce Young signature – always identifiable. Her approach is underpinned by what she describes as: “easy elegance”. She is driven by a love of textiles and luxury fabrics, rather than by watching other designers or the catwalks. Joyce says: “I’ve always thought about what I like to wear. I don’t want to be too neat or ‘trussed up’, so there’s always something casual – a twist – in my designs. It’s good to add elements that are a bit quirky. And I start by designing around the qualities of the fabric and my instinct for how it might work.” While there’s no such thing as the typical customer, Joyce Young’s brides are generally savvy when it comes to style and lead a busy professional life. JOYCE YOUNG PIONEERED THEIDEA OF RELAXED ELEGANCE FOR FORMAL OCCASIONS

SHE MOVED INTO OCCASION WEAR BECAUSE SHE LOVED WORKING WITH LUXE FABRICS

EVERY JOYCE YOUNG GOWN IS MADE BY HER SMALL GLASGOW TEAM – MEANING FLEXIBILITY

her design process means she can – for instance – assist the last-minute bride, or one who wants to do different with dress colour or style. She says: “When I’m not in London I’m in my Glasgow factory every day. We control production, so can work quickly.” Brides may opt for a collection gown, or have it adapted; all gowns are made to measure anyway, which means room to change a detail or introduce elements from different looks. A third option is to go totally bespoke, with patterns, toiles and four fittings – the full couture process. Joyce Young’s UK suppliers’ network and expertise means she is able to source luxe fabrics to achieve a particular look. Another arm of her bridal design work focuses around tartan weddings. Her creativity in updating this look using exquisite silk tartans adds colour and an elegant contemporary edge to tradition. Joyce says: “It’s a vibrant niche market and we get customers from around the world who want to incorporate tartan patterning into their gown.” In fact, she can clothe the whole female wedding party. When Judy Murray wore a Joyce Young cream wool coat and mink dress to son Andy’s wedding to Kim Sears, it caused a sensation in the press. While it wasn’t the only outfit Joyce had designed for

JOYCE YOUNG RECEIVED HER OBE AWARD FROM PRINCE CHARLES

“I START BY DESIGNING AROUND THE QUALITIES OF THE FABRIC AND MY INSTINCT FOR HOW IT MIGHT WORK”

Judy (who wore another to Buckingham Palace for Andy Murray’s OBE award), it showed the world that glamour doesn’t stop at 40. With everything from simple shifts to longer length gowns, trousers and smart coats in the mix, here is a mother of the bride collection that blends simple lines with truly luxurious fabrics. Joyce says: “As women, we don’t always think we are the right size or shape – especially in mid life – but we still need to look great. Weddings are also changing so it’s about feeling poised, comfortable and – above all – confident.” In 2016, Joyce Young picked up another gong, Bridal Designer of the Year at the VOWS Awards (Scotland’s Oscars for bridal), which are decided by public vote. So what’s her magic touch? In an interview for Elegance magazine shortly after she received her OBE, Joyce described why she began her journey all those years ago, saying: “I wanted to design what I wanted”. Her design vision clearly, dovetails pretty neatly with what all brides and occasion goers want: luxury fabrics, casual twists and, above all, elegance that’s feels as good to wear as it looks.

NEW YORK TRENDS

ZUHAIR MURAD – DRAMATIC OVERSKIRTS AND SLIM GOWNS

Clare Thompson picks out key trends spotted on the catwalks of New York’s Fall Bridal Week Chosen by THE WEDDING CLUB

N

ew York is the place to spot upcoming global trends for bridal. Its spring and fall showcases are where the world’s bridal buyers take their pick of homegrown and international gowns. Clare Thompson of The Wedding Club selects her key trends for 2017 and beyond, as seen on last October’s catwalks.

BERTA – BARE SKIN AND SOPHISTICATED TEXTURES

NAEEM KHAN – STUNNING HALTERNECKS

SHOULDER REVEAL ff-the-shoulder gowns were big news in New York fall collections and appeared across virtually all lines. Clare says: “This is a flattering and versatile neckline that can either be the focal point of a tailored or ballroom-style gown or – with the addition of lace – channel a more 1970s-boho look”. With another nod to the 1970s, halternecks were also much in evidence adding length and a streamlined silhouette – showcased particularly effectively in the fall collection by Naeem Khan.

Berta and Legends by Romona Keveza collections. Clare spotted a clear 1950s theme, with lush fabrics and full ballroom-style skirts, often in textured silk with wide waistbands. Hi-lo hemlines are one way to work this silhouette, as they are particularly effective with a hint of 1950s styling. Overskirts are even more versatile giving the option to transform from showstopping full skirt to slinky cocktail number. Zuhair Murad showed fabulous overskirts over embellished slimline gowns.

There is plenty of glitz, with adornments such as crystals ROMONA KEVEZA – SOFT COLOUR POPS and pearls on bodices, shoulders and AND CURVACEOUS SHAPES belt details. Metallics are also big news – used to great effect by Isabelle Armstrong, who also included exquisite lace detailing in some of her gowns. The bare-skin effect shows no sign of abating. Clare says: “Sheers are still everywhere, and particularly strong

he ‘other than white’ trend is still one of the most interesting developments in bridal gowns – reflecting both changing wedding styles and brides’ desire to do something different on their wedding day. Alongside the glitzy metallics and silvery grey shown by designers such as Isabelle Armstrong, we have delicate blush-pink from Romona Keveza, while lilac and soft mauves are making an appearance in other collections. Tips for choosing a suit, honeymoon gear to go and the smart groom’s essential wedding shoes and scent 2 feel snug but comfortable, whether you are walking, standing or sitting down. Pay particular attention to how it feels around legs and chest – neither should feel too tight. Colour and style are just as important. While Richard says tuxedos are popular right now, it can be good to opt for a slightly different look – choosing a midnight blue rather than black or opting for a centre rather than side vent. A tux isn’t your only option. Richard says: “A three-piece suit never fails to look incredibly smart. Again, to be a little different, choose a peak lapel. Most people like to go for something they can wear again, such as lighter shades of blue and grey.” Richard says it’s important to look for design details that make you stand out from the rest of the wedding party: “If you’re matching with your father-in-law-to-be on your wedding day, you’ve probably made the wrong decision.” He also suggests you consider which fabric will best suit the season. “A light mohair and a wool mix is

R

ichard Thompson, the designer behind Exclusive Tailoring, says that the big three choices grooms have to make are fit, colour, style. Fit always comes first, says Richard: “I would strongly recommend getting your measurements done by a professional. Professional measuring is a corner that some people do cut, however, if your suit doesn’t fit properly when you go to try it on, getting alterations done can be even more costly.” So how do you determine if the fit is right? Richard suggests the suit should

always good for a summer wedding as it has a nice finish and is breathable – and the suit will hold its shape, too. Linen is a great option, however, it will crumple throughout the day to give a very casual and relaxed look.” His final word of advice is to do your research in advance – and allow enough time, since he finds many grooms leave things until the last minute. Beginning the process early gives you far more options to find (or go bespoke on) the right suit to match the occasion and your personal style. And all good tailors can advise on look, cut and the best ways to get a timeless look with a fashionforward edge. Bridal hair

NEW WAVE Even the best-tressed among us can be tied in knots over the wedding hairstyle. But Craig Taylor of Hari’s Salons, says it’s time to relax and make your own bridal waves

I

t can be easy to try and do something entirely different for your wedding day, and sometimes this can mean a formal or stiff look that just isn’t you. But times are changing: “Wearing your hair long and loose is fast becoming a cool, more modern way to work wedding hair,” says Craig Taylor, creative director of London’s Hari’s Salons. “Hair that’s too stiff, too high or too tight only serves to make a bride feel like anyone other than herself”. Craig suggests you consider leaving your hair down and explore the creative possibilities. “Most of all, the longhaired among us need to unwind”.

S E V E N T I E S S H OW   “A hairstyle worn down can still have plenty of polish. It can move, shine and flatter just as much as the most intricate of up dos,” says Craig. He suggests you take inspiration from the Seventies, when soft-textured hair with movement was all about framing the face, also beautifully complementing the cut of your clothes. Craig says using traditional hot rollers can be a good way to achieve this shaping, but it’s important to blow-dry through hair to finish off – this loosens the curls that hot-rollers leave behind, which can be large and a bit dated. Another trick is to keep one side of the hair back, so it’s less symmetrical. He says: “This will also keep the look modern and not too Farah Fawcett.” To keep hair in place, Craig suggests you hold the side back with a comb or slide, or fix a hidden ponytail under the back of the hair lengths.

B E AC H B L O N D E

WAVES FROM THE BACK

  “The beach blonde look is great on a bride, and worn the right way creates a really soft and pretty effect. But do avoid the overly ‘perfect’ look,” says Craig. To keep it fresh and relaxed, try a loose centre parting and focus on hair preparation.

78   Spring / Summer 2017

Weddings_March_April17_BeautySpread.indd 78

08/02/2017 19:06

Beauty Looks WEDDING HAIR

That way it will keep its wonderful ‘Bardot’ volume and texture all day. Craig swears by hair mousse: “It’s my go-to for longlasting body, particularly for brides with fine and silky hair.” Depending on how ‘mermaid’ you want the look to be, you can follow the prep and blow-dry with a wand tong, gently undoing the waves once finished by using blonde dry shampoo. This is then gently tousled with fingers, until you have the finish you love. For an even more ‘fresh off the beach’ ruffled look, Craig has another secret up his sleeve: “For a bit less polish still, add a spritz of salt spray, and finish by running your fingers through the hair.”

W E D D I N G TA I L S

PLAIT

 Bridal ponytails are seeing a big resurgence – Craig believes this is because a pony gives brides so many options to work the look around her style. “This is a style that looks fabulous with tiaras, veils and accessories. It’s also great for shorter, layered hair which is hard to put up in traditional ways – and a side bonus is it gives your face a good lift by pulling the hair back and up!” If you’re worried that a ponytail might feel too low-key, Craig has some reassurance. “Adding movement to a ponytail will instantly create a more glamorous look, while a low-side or low-slung version makes for a lovely romantic style”.

LOW PONY

TYING THE KNOT

WAVES WITH FLOWERS

 If you want your hair fashionably long, plump for plaits. Craig says: “Braids are a big trend for this season, with a new-found style that’s soft rather than tight, wide rather than small.” This is a loose and laissez-faire approach to plaiting, where texture is key. But whether your plaits are worn as halos across the hairline, along the nape of the neck or over to one side, the most important rule, says Craig, is that the shape and placement has to suit you. That’s why it’s important to have a wedding hair trial to find the right style for you that also works with the look of your gown.

nita Warszawska specialises in getting brides and occasion goers party ready. With a keen eye for what works in every light, she can create the look and test it under the harshest judge – the camera’s lens. This is because Anita is both a trained make-up artist and a photographer. With a beauty studio in Maida Vale – a space with natural light bulbs so looks can be tested for day-to-evening quality – Anita works with many happy repeat customers. She particularly enjoys helping brides to develop or refine their look and her bridal trials are a great way to set the tone of your wedding style. Brides always want to look like the best version of themselves not someone else, but sometimes a fresh and trained eye can reveal a beautiful new you just by suggesting a different approach to eyes, lips and the balance of the make-up you apply – even the products you choose. Her approach is particularly valuable for

brides who are planning a destination or remote wedding, where it’s impractical to have a make-up artist on call all day. And, of course, some brides prefer to apply their own make-up on their wedding day.

in the run up to the day. She also uses triedand-tested make-up products – those secret weapons in the pro make up bag that will work under every light and also photograph well. Once the make-up is applied, Anita then takes a few test shots so that both she and the client can review how the finished look is working. She says: “No bride leaves my studio unless she’s completely happy and my aim is to make these preparations take the stress out of her wedding day, so she’s got the look she wants and feels relaxed about make-up on the day.”

H OW IT WO RKS Anita always offers free consultations first and then runs trials in her studio so that make-up can be applied in the most testing conditions (natural daylight) and then reviewed to ensure it looks flawless. She says: “I recommend that clients do some research in advance to show me make-up and hair looks they like. Then on the day we can choose between us the ideas that are going to work best.” Although she trained at the renowned Iver Make-up Academy (formerly the Greasepaint School), so knows how to apply make-up for film and TV, Anita uses a very natural style. She says: “I apply make-up carefully and in layers so that it looks natural but also lasts.” Throughout the session, Anita provides tips on hair, make-up and skincare to help brides ensure they are looking after their best assets

Alongside popular mixed class, there are options to vary the regime – whether your preference is a fast HITcore class or gentler barreStretch. The team also offer one-to-one classes and specialist nutrition sessions. In addition to its studio classes (six locations across London and still growing), you can also sign up for online classes – one-to-one or in a group – bringing the Barrecore method into your home or office. Barrecore has studios in London, Alderley Edge, Bristol and Leeds. Visit barrecore.co.uk

A lean and feminine physique is everybody’s goal. Barrecore founder Niki Rein explains what this low-impact and fun exercise regime can do for brides to be

D

ance-based training is nothing new, but the ‘no pain, no gain’ approach of many earlier incarnations is not what Barrecore is about. Rather, it is a low-impact exercise method inspired in part by dance moves, with elements of yoga built in. Introduced to the UK by American-born Niki Rein in 2009, it has attracted passionate devotees across London and new branches outside London testify to its fast growing fan base. Barrecore is designed so that you use your own body weight or small equipment for resistance. The core method combines calorieburning moves with static stretches. It’s this combination that creates that covetable lean dancer’s body and, says Niki Rein, the benefits of the exercise can be seen after just four sessions. “Barrecore increases metabolic rate so the benefits continue after every class. But you will also find multiple other bonuses, including

improved mood, more energy and better, more refreshing sleep.” The focus is on building a feminine and graceful body, elongating your muscles rather than adding bulk. The moves – many of which take place at a barre or on a floormat – also improve flexibility and posture. Niki says that just two classes a week will help to transform your physique. If you have less time or want to to kickstart your regime, three or four classes a week will reap rewards in six weeks or less. Devotees of the Barrecore method talk about how each class boosts their fitness – and how much fun they have. Because the focus is on working your entire body and concentrating on specific muscle groups through repetitions and stretches, this is also great stress release – always a bonus for brides to be. Niki says: “Many of our clients lead unbelievably busy lives and say Barrecore acts as a release that helps them get through stressful times. We certainly find that this is a regime that aids mindfulness – and with options to vary classes to suit your schedule and your goals."

KAREN CORNACCHIA is joint managing director of pyrotechnic specialists Le Maitre Events l e m a i t re e v e n t s .c o m Q We want something spectacular to mark the move between the formal bits of our wedding and then take us into the fun part. What would you recommend? A Pyrotechnics act as a spectacular visual marker to show that the day’s celebrations are moving on and also add the wow factor to your wedding. To make an impression as you arrive at your reception, you could opt for sparkling gerbs (similar to giant sparklers) or line your path with flame projectors. If you place flame projectors around the dance floor, you are guaranteed to make that first dance feel magical. Low smoke can also be used to add romance to the dance floor. Confetti cannons make stunning visual cues to mark the cutting of the cake or conclusion of the speeches. Or, if you want all your guests to feel close to the action, incorporate pyrotechnics into table centrepieces. Ice fountains can be easily concealed in floral arrangements, sparking into life at a given moment. Similarly, confetti or streamer cartridges can (all completely safely) burst into life and cover guests simultaneously!

Q We’re looking for a really unusual wedding cake – not just the typical sponge or fruit cake – what ideas can you recommend? A We are constantly adding new flavours to our menu because so many couples like the idea of serving their guests unusual, luxurious flavours that are not available every day. For example, cherry and almond cake is normally a tart but we have made it into a cake form, including all the key ingredients that would create a bakewell tart. For the ultimate luxurious wedding cake, we would definitely recommend

our champagne sponge. It is made with real champagne, and soaked with champagne again when it comes out of the oven to bring out its delicious flavour. It’s worth knowing that any of our cake flavours can be made into gluten free options – a request that is more and more frequent – as we have adapted our menu favourites to cater for people’s tastes and any allergies. We also have some really light options. For instance, our almond, orange and yoghurt flavour is light and fluffy and a great choice for a high-summer wedding when couples often want a lighter flavour than, say, chocolate. It can also be adapted to remove the nuts. While the taste of the cake is all important, it also has to look wonderful and I find it’s very useful for couples who are stuck for ideas to meet with me so I can get a feel for the wedding and their vision for the cake and then design something totally bespoke to match the occasion.

Q We want our wedding to feel more like a party than a formal celebration. What elements would you suggest we consider introducing? A Occasional seating will instantly create a more relaxed atmosphere than, say, the typical six-foot round tables. A mix of seating styles – you could add in sofas too – helps to break down the formality of the occasion and will encourage people to mix. Food is another key factor in ensuring a chilled-out atmosphere. Rather than a formal serving style, consider opting for food stations and pass around food. Music is a key element to create a party vibe. I’m passionate about this because of my background as a musician. It’s the best way to build party energy. For instance, live musicians will instantly add an energy and get people’s toes tapping and can be mixed in with a DJ set. Interactive and charismatic live acts are also a great way to entertain guests and contribute to the party atmosphere. Set the right tone with music, seating and food and you ensure a memorable and personal wedding celebration, and with a party vibe that ensures everyone wants to let their hair down.

Little BEVAN

Sarah Colfer, founder and designer at internationally renowned childrenswear label Little Bevan explains how their dream outfits are created

W

e started as a home business in 2004, creating couture special occasion outfits. Three years on we moved into our Pimlico shop. We remain a small team – my sister is still my business partner. As children we were always making things and playing shop, so this has always felt like a fun extension of that. Designing for children – we do babies right up to adults – is a subject close to my heart. I’m particularly inspired by the portrait artists of the 17th to 19th century, and like to think Little Bevan designs have a timeless quality. We get whole families visiting to choose that special gown so we try to make the whole atmosphere as memorable as possible. It should be fun for children – like dressing up – so I’m very

careful about ensuring I talk directly to them. Tweenies and teens can be especially self-conscious, so it’s all about explaining how it will fit, so they don’t feel awkward. We also work online and customers are from around the world. Everything is made to order – whether ordered virtually or in person – so we take great care in the processes of ensuring perfect fit. We work with some amazing suppliers and love the creativity of finding a special fabric. Recently we have created two special commissions where we designed the cloth to match a bespoke design and that was such an exciting and creative process. We like to think we are providing the personal service and the imaginative designs that help people’s dreams for special occasions come true.

hile Bruce Russell is a name synonymous with luxury weddings, he says the last thing he would want is for a guest at a celebration he planned to recognise it as a ‘By Bruce Russell’. To his mind, a successfully planned wedding party reflects the personalities of the couple, never the planner: “Getting married is an emotional process, but couples also make a big financial investment in their celebration. Clients who come to me invariably have an overall vision of what they want – my role is to help them translate their vision into reality.” In practical terms, that means a drill sergeant’s eye for detail and the diplomacy of an ambassador. It also means sitting down at the start of the process to gain a very thorough understanding of the couple’s tastes and wishlist. Budgets also

come into play from the start because, whether it’s an intimate celebration or a £200,000 spectacular, costs are managed forensically and transparently. Structure is the overriding factor in shaping the celebration and is dictated by the logical order of things. Bruce says: “At the heart of all weddings are the key elements – the service, entertainment and food – so these are central to the planning equation”. Weaving together the necessary and the fabulous is a balancing act, but always grounded in the minutiae of timings and supplier briefings. Bruce is reassuringly down-to-earth on the subject of not attempting to reinvent the wheel, noting that it’s often small but important details that add the

A WEDDING SHOULD REFLECT THE PERSONALITIES OF THE COUPLE, NEVER THE PLANNER ‘wow’ factor. If the couple want to serve a classic such as fillet of beef, at tastings Bruce will discuss with them how this might be tweaked to make it a little different – so it feels specific to their taste and their celebration. Similarly, a venue such as The Savoy plays host to many glorious weddings, so he will explore how non-static elements are tailored so that it loses none of its hallmarks but still feels fresh to guests – even those who have attended a dozen celebrations there in the past. He’s wary of talking in terms of upcoming trends such as flowers and

94

themes – these elements are invariably dictated by the couple’s tastes, but he has seen a marked trend towards destination celebrations. And celebrations are getting longer. He says: “Gone are the days of the one-day affair – typically a wedding might involve a welcome event, service and celebration and then a farewell party." Perhaps the biggest shift is towards a more relaxed style – with more couples feeling confident enough to blend the formalities with bold and quirky extras. Bruce has a stellar list of suppliers to call on – from renowned photographer John Nassari and top London florist Nikki Tibbles to hair stylists Errol Douglas and Gustav Fouche of Michael Van Clarke. Like all successful wedding planners, he not only gathers the right people for the wedding journey, but also acts as guardian of the clients’ brief. As he puts it: “My role is to ensure an event that runs seamlessly, is warmly remembered long afterwards and feels completely unique to the couple”.

Wedding Planner GIFT LISTS

Gifting EXPERIENCES Since so many couples these days are toaster rich and time poor, one solution is to choose experiences. The memories they create are the gift that keeps on giving

W

edding gifts can be so much more creative if you think outside the box (of cutlery, china and glass). While most couples want some or a lot of the above, the experience side of gifting is becoming increasingly popular – not least because these are memory making adventures that last long after the event. And you will find guests are very receptive to the idea these days; after all it’s nice for them to think they have added to your trip of a lifetime. Most will also appreciate the fact that many couples these days are not quite so desperate for possessions, but are keen to squeeze every last opportunity out of their hard-earned luxury trip. Best of all for your guests, gifting experiences is a great way to pool resources to buy something more substantial that they know you will never forget. While one person may be able to buy a fine piece of china or a cosy rug, five or eight can each contribute towards a substantial honeymoon side trip or a fun homecoming treat – be it spa day, getaway weekend or cultural event.

THE HONEYMOON FUND The honeymoon cash fund is the surefire way to add luxury extras to your trip, knowing those who love you have still chosen something special for you. At Prezola, you can set up a cash honeymoon fund, either personalising it with your own images and ideas or choosing from areas where you’d like a gift – for instance, a blowout dinner at a top hotel or cocktails at a choice beach bar. The Wedding Shop also lets you specify funds and where they will be going – for instance, guests can choose to place their cash gift into a fund for your airfare (this could be the initial getaway or side trips), for flight upgrades or room upgrades on arrival. With contributions starting at £10, this is a great way for guests on absolutely-weddings.co.uk  101

THE EXPERIENCE Gifting experiences that happen on home turf is another excellent way for guests to contribute. And here the world is your oyster (oyster bars are definitely on the list). At The Wedding Shop they offer a great range of options to inspire you – everything from dinner at The Dorchester and cocktail masterclasses to spa days. And Prezola also lets you organise funds in such a way that you can design experiences for your honeymoon, minimoon or the return to home turf when, of course,

Speak to your gift-list provider to ensure you design the right experiences for you. Sounds obvious, but they are also a mine of information about how other couples have done it, trends in cash and experience giving and also how to arrange the formalities such as explaining to people where their money is going. Of course, Prezola and The Wedding Club ensure you have a very clear record of who has given you what, so it’s easy for you to decide where guests’ funds will be used and how you will deliver the write up afterwards. It is essential to thank people for these gifts, in just the same way you would if they gave you a dinner service or cutlery. They don’t want them to think the money just got absorbed or forgotten – or paid your electricity bill. Keeping a clear record makes writing the thank-you letter that much easier. Just don’t forget to take lots of pictures and enclose a snapshot or two of you both having the time of your life.

ressing your venue can be one of the hardest decisions, especially if you want to do something different or you are working ‘out of season’ when the classic spring and summer flowers may not feel quite so appropriate to your day or the colours of the landscape around you. Often the best way is to use what you have, drawing on the riches of the season, by mixing in colours and adding light and shade – as this spectacular autumnal setting shows.

FIRE AND ICE This inspired tablesetting created by Nikki Tibbles and the team at Wild at Heart uses late-season bounty to create a rich and textured effect. Pale roses – always appropriate and also flowering well into early autumn – are mixed in here with fiery dahlias, a late border showstopper. The whole effect of mixing tonal shades from pale to burnished red, gold and almost black is stunning. The use of rose hips is a beautiful addition.

urn arrangement. Raised high above the tables it sets the scene for autumn and looks wonderful lit from below by candles in burnished gold vessels.

AUTUMN RICHES The grand finishing touch is a trailing arrangement placed over the tables. Here the same warm reds and burgundies hold sway, mixed in with rosehips. Using foliage, alongside flowers, is a creative way to introduce a sense of the outdoors, whatever the weather outside. Lit from below by more gold tealights, this is the perfect setting for a wedding feast.

HIGH DRAMA The same colourscheme is picked up on a grander scale for a dramatic focal point

BEAUTIFUL BOUQUETS Amie Bone’s began selling flowers on a market stall in Banbury. Now her awardwinning flowers grace hotels and weddings around the capital. She is known for her superbly creative colour mixes amieboneflowers.com

Rich burgundy, red and contrasting yellow – even accents of black – create a striking arrangement to match a strong colour theme

Beautiful shades ranging from peach and pastel pink to citrus are combined in a hand-tied bouquet

Soft contrasts can be particularly effective. Here peach, mauve and flashes of strong blue are mixed in with accents of gypsophila, flashes of green and flowers in bud

This beautiful and relaxed wedding bouquet shows the beauty of using one colour, accented with hints of yellow and grey-green in flower centres and foliage.

SCENE SETTING wedding is about much more than the day itself – there is the anticipation, information and build-up through save the date, invitations and other scene setters.  Over the years, Lillingston has gained a name for delivering some of the most original and exquisite invitations – from an orange tree in a wooden crate, to beach bats, cocktail shakers and personalised leather wallets with private plane tickets. DELIVERING ORIGINALITY IS WHAT LILLINGSTON DO BEING PASSIONATE ABOUT THE SMALL DETAILS MATTERS

A D D E D S TA R D U S T here are key ingredients that go into a wedding but it is the ‘stardust’ that makes it unique. Th is could be a sensational entertainer, authentic rocking gospel choir, five thousand candles fl ickering in the garden or a creative friend doing something one-off for your celebration. These are the special layers of icing on the cake. While there is always scope for fabulous – and Lillingston love doing fabulous – it’s important to be just as passionate about the personal gestures. From experience, it’s often the hand-drawn maps, welcome letters – or simply a favourite magazine in the hotel room – that make each guest feel really welcome and appreciated. All these details large and small are what add up to a Lillingston wedding – bespoke, friendly and designed to make everyone lucky enough to be invited feel that have attended something unique, unforgettable and truly magical.

M AY FA I R SM A RT he Lansdowne is a private members’ club just off Berkeley Square in Mayfair – about the best address you can get – and hosts weddings for non members. Its history is undeniably romantic – Lord Byron used to enjoy drinking in its hallowed rooms – and after it passed into the hands of Gordon Selfridge (of Selfridges department store fame) in the 1920s it became a rather risqué dance spot. The interiors are largely classical, but with fantastic Art Deco flourishes, thanks to a spot of remodelling in the 1930s. Ocean Jewel

A jewel of the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka is a fascinating blend of rich culture, exotic wildlife and spectacular scenery – and the food and beaches top off what is surely the perfect island adventure Wo r d s R AC H E L W E B B

S

ri Lanka promises it all – ancient monuments, elephant encounters, rich and spicy cuisine and beaches. Our main problem is how to squeeze everything into what is only the briefest of encounters. And looking at the guide books, we can see that we would need a month or more to even skim the surface of this fascinating Indian Ocean nation. Since we are combining this trip with a visit to the Maldives – the two are a justly popular combination among honeymooners – we’ve got to pack a lot into a few days. Our guide for an actionpacked visit is Red Dot Tours, experts in all that Sri Lanka has to offer and builder of tailor-made trips for time-poor, experience-hungry couples like us. At Colombo, we check into The

Kingsbury, an ultra-modern hotel that offers both access to prime beach and luxury rooms, all with Indian Ocean views. It was the views – and the rooftop bar – that swung it for us, and sitting watching the sunset while sipping an Arrack (the must-try local cocktail), we are very pleased with our choice. This first night is also our first experience of Sri Lankan hospitality and it is to become a hallmark of the trip – there is genuine warmth and friendliness from every encounter, however small. We had asked Red Dot for restaurant recommendations, since we’ve heard such a lot about the cuisine’s mix of Indian spices and fabulous local produce (especially fish and seafood). So Ministry of Crab, located in Colombo’s Old Dutch Hospital, is where we find ourselves and the menu certainly doesn’t disappoint. This is seafood with bells on (or rather legs, since the side-walking local ocean speciality is the main event). We simply love it, and who knew crab could work so very well

SHANGRI LA HAMBANTOTA IS SRI LANKA'S NEW LUXE RESORT – PARADISE FOR HONEYMOONERS

THE SETTING, FOOD AND SERVICE AT THE SHANGRI LA ARE SUMPTUOUS

in such rich, spicy and tropical combinations? Our tour itinerary over the few days is – we later admit – ambitious, but no visitor to Sri Lanka can neglect to visit the more famous sites, one of them being the Elephant Orphanage at Pinawalla. The setting is busy – clearly we’re not the only visitors who feel this is a must-see – and with lots of souvenir stalls on the way in, but also more traditional local crafts and clothing. We admire the elephants bathing and leave knowing that, while these babies may be objects of fascination for us tourists right now, they will return to the wild as adults. That night, we stay at the Mahaweli Reach, a lovely traditional Sri Lankan hotel set in lush gardens by the Mahaweli River, where we are greeted with fragrant jasmine petals.

The next day we visit Kandy to see the shrine Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Tooth), awestruck by the gold lotus on the ceiling and overwhelmed by the smell of incense and aura of holiness of this ancient shrine to Buddha. The whole city of Kandy is a World Heritage Site, but even if your ultimate goal is Sri Lanka’s golden beaches, this is definitely the one piece of culture you should shoehorn in somehow. After paying respects at a holy site, we’ve set ourselves the target of seeing Sri Lanka from the air and Red Dot have booked us on a Cinnamon Air flight so that we can journey to the Shangri La Hambantota Resort & Spa, also taking in some wildlife. This turns out to be a genius piece of travel planning since it cuts down on the rather long journey by road, but also gives us an unforgettable view of the landscape. That night we are immersed in total luxury at the Shangri La. Newly opened last year, and Sri Lanka’s largest resort set on a 53-hectare site on the glorious south coast, it is – in one word – paradise. With an adults’ only area of the hotel and all manner of escapades, from juggling lessons and Ayurveda to golf and bird watching offered as part of the diversions

“WE ARE IMMERSED IN TOTAL LUXURY AT THE SHANGRI LA HAMBANTOTA, SRI LANKA’S EXCEPTIONAL NEW RESORT AND – IN ONE WORD – PARADISE” menu here, we make a mental note to make a return visit and stay for longer. As with every encounter on this trip, the hospitality is truly exceptional. After two more action-packed days, taking in whale watching by private catamaran and a visit to Galle – where we even try out a cookery class, Sri Lankan style – we are just about fit to drop on a Maldivian beach. Two things we learn from our all-too-brief tour of this rich island; one is to book a longer trip next time and the second is to book some down time alongside the culture in order to enjoy its blissful beaches that tempted us on every step of our journey round the coast. * For tailormade and luxury Sri Lanka trips and tours, visit reddottours.com. HILTON BANKSIDE – A COOL LOBBY MIXING INDUSTRIAL AND COMFY TEXTURES

ondon is always alluring, and needs no introduction, but the sights and sounds on the south bank of the Thames are different, offering a fresh perspective on the capital. Our home for the weekend is the penthouse suite at Hilton Bankside, meaning we are a short walk from the pleasure palace Tate Modern and a string of other jewels along this stretch of the Thames. And this locale is also impeccably connected, with bridges and a choice of stations within a short walk. After dropping our car with the valet parking team, we walk into a cool and modern space, already buzzing with weekenders and business travellers staying on for an extra day. It feels new, but with a sense of this area’s industrial past in the design – all polished concrete, exposed beams and sympathetic lighting. We are swiftly checked in and handed our pass to the upper floors and the main event, a suite in London’s chicest quarter. While the hotel itself is relatively low-rise, our fourth floor penthouse feels on top of the world – and it’s more like our own private apartment than a hotel. It has a booklined corridor leading through to large living absolutely-weddings.co.uk  141

space with floor-to-ceiling windows. There’s a functional-chic kitchen area (plus fridge packed with complimentary snacks) and outside a deck with sofas. While the weather isn’t conducive to lounging outside, we admire the roof-garden meadow and painted working beehives created by London jeweller Alex Monroe. Most of all, this is a space to stretch out in and relax. The vast photo artwork on one wall opens up to reveal a huge flat-screen TV. Should we just stay here all weekend, we wonder, because the sofas do look so inviting? An hour or so later we’ve navigated our space, including finding the marvellous marble bathroom that leads off the bedroom and a cloakroom we'd somehow missed. We decide we can’t stay in, however tempting, so head down to the spa and gym to check out the pool – designed for laps but also with loungers

THERE ARE FIRES AND AN AWESOME SERVE-YOURSELF BANQUET OF SNACKS ALONG ONE WALL – HIGH LIFE INDEED around it for the less healthfully inclined. Having done our duty, we stop off for a snack in the executive lounge. There are fires and an awesome serve-yourself banquet of tasty things along one wall – high life indeed. After a swift snack of smoked salmon and prawn open sandwiches and a craft beer, we take a short stroll to do some sightseeing in Tate Modern’s lofty Turbine Hall. We can’t stay too long as we have reservations in the hotel’s adjoining OXBO Bankside restaurant.

THE EXECUTIVE LOUNGE – FIRES AND A BUFFET OF SNACKS

OXBO and The Distillery turn out to be the surprise of the weekend. Busy with drinkers and diners, these are fantastic places to revisit – penthouse room or not. Like the hotel, they draw on references to this area’s industrial past. The design of The Distillery shows the cool hand of Dexter Moren Associates and Twenty2degrees. We admire the penny wall – a reminder that it’s rumoured that a secret Bank of England coin warehouse was once on this spot. The rest of the space is a mix of retro and modern – lots of reminders of the Victorian perfume and essence factory that is known to have been here. Gin is big on the drinks menu, and we take our time choosing from the 50 plus on offer. Then we are ushered next door to OXBO. A vast open kitchen along one wall shows the business end of the restaurant and it smells so good. We’ve got something of a quandary since I feel in a fishy mood and my companion has to have one of the restaurant’s speciality steaks. But the super-helpful sommelier helps out with an Italian red, which suits our choices and palates perfectly. Executive chef Paul Bates and his team don’t disappoint. My seared scallops with palm hearts

are a golden combination while my partner opts for roasted beetroot with Cornish Yarg cheese (he’s saving himself for steak). He declares the fillet that arrives the best since Buenos Aires, while my roasted cod with caper and egg butter sauce hits the spot perfectly. Finishing with a raspberry crème brûlée and apple mousse may have been a course too far, but we console ourselves with the thought that two huge sofas await us in the penthouse. The next morning we manage a return visit for a hearty breakfast – OXBO is big on breakfasts with both diners and locals – and then regretfully hand back the key card to our room. We conclude that Hilton Bankside has everything you could want for a home base in London. It’s cool but friendly, totally luxurious and offers the best of old and new in the capital’s most exciting quarter.

Bungalow isn’t really the best word, since these new suites are more in the Tahitian tropical style – think palm roofs and capacious wood decking. They feature see-through glass floors, an over-the-water hammock built for two, private infinity pool and capacious bath tubs to give you private spa time with a view. You won’t feel too cut off as there’s a personal butler service and private boat transfers to and from the resort itself. ANNA'S LOVELY GOWN WAS FOUND JUST WEEKS BEFORE THE WEDDING

A

s a food writer and blogger, Anna Barnett was not going to let an opportunity like her own destination wedding pass without making a meal of it. She and Thom decided their location had to be Italy because it’s a subject close to both their hearts. Anna says: “Thom and I both love Italy – mainly for the cuisine and rural landscapes. And we liked the idea of being out in the sticks on a farm somewhere.” Their other priority was a location that friends and family could share: “We wanted to make it all last as long as possible in the most relaxed way possible.” So when they found Villa La Zambonina, a 17th-century manor on a rice-growing estate, they knew they had struck gold. Located just 15-minutes from Verona, it offered authentic hospitality and the opportunity to design a party round its beautiful ancient courtyard. Anna and Thom envisaged a country-style party. Anna says: “We wanted sharing plates, Nonnastyle, rustic home cooking and nothing fussy”. The owner of Villa La Zambonina Marina swung into action,

ONE OF ANNA'S HIGHLIGHTS WAS THOM SAYING HIS VOWS IN ITALIAN – HE SPEAKS NO ITALIAN

putting them in contact with all the right people – from florists to caterers. Marina even found friends who could put up extra guests on a farm a short drive away. As a cook and culinary explorer, Anna had to get the menu just right and was hugely impressed by the caterers: “Tregnaghi catering & Banqueting are familyrun with a deli just outside Verona. They were amazing – sourcing everything down to the last detail. They even made nonregional dishes for us and the food was incredible, to the point that we’re still dreaming about the homemade pasta and risotto!” Their venue was the star, set in such stunning natural scenery, so Anna wanted a fairly muted colour palette for flowers – neutral tones with blush and dusty pink touches. Floricultura Bosco supplied incredible flowers, including the eucalyptus, fragrant English roses and hydrangeas Anna

had specially requested. Having planned on a grand scale for the feasting, Anna found her wedding gown three weeks before the wedding at Angelica Bridal in Camden Passage, matching it to fabulous Manolo Blahnik green heels and shades. Thom’s smart suit came from Burberry Prorsum. Anna also had a cocktail gown in the mix, since the party began the night before the wedding. The weather produced its best – Italian style – and Anna and Thom’s wedding day was as relaxed as it could be. They used the chapel within the absolutely-weddings.co.uk

manor house for the ceremony and blessing and then moved on to the feasting in the evening. The next day they had a pool party and wedding ‘debrief’. While it was beautifully warm, a dramatic electric storm in the evening lit up the sky with endless sheet lightening. The rain finally came down at 1am, but didn’t stop the dancing or late-night swimming. Guests were fed on through the night with delicious pizzas (a pizza oven was installed specially for the event). Anna and Thom didn’t want their amazing wedding party to end and there were many high points. Anna says: “For Thom, it was getting to do his vows in Italian – the translator didn’t work out and my husband doesn’t speak Italian! For me it was Thom’s

speech, which started with him belting out R. Kelly’s Bump N' Grind. Then, for both of us, the food – it was a dream feast.” Anna and Thom’s advice to other brides and grooms is to keep things simple. Anna says: “Leave as little to do on the day as possible so you don’t have to think about a thing – I can honestly say I loved every second. Also, drag out the celebrations so they last as long as possible.” While guests did have to depart eventually, Anna and Thom kept their Italian culinary adventure going for just a few days longer, moving on to stay at the iconic Belmond Hotel Cipriani and the Aman in Venice and also spending a few days at Villa Arcadio overlooking Lake Garda. From sublime to divine, this minimoon was, says Anna, the perfect end to their wonderful Italian wedding feast. hen Carly and Tom began planning their summer wedding, their most pressing issue was finding the right location. Carly says: “We looked at so many venues, but then we saw Stoke Park and realised it had everything. It was elegant and traditional and also required very little dressing for the kind of celebration we wanted”. The icing on the cake was the exterior architecture because this white-stuccoed Palladian country club and hotel set in glorious Buckinghamshire parkland perfectly matched their vision of a traditional and relaxed summer wedding with a single colour theme – pure white. It had all the romance you could require from a wedding venue,

having played a starring role in movies galore, from James Bond to Bridget Jones’s Diary. Its location also meant Carly and Tom could hold their service in the pictureperfect church of St Mary’s, Beaconsfield, just 15 minutes away. With the venue in place, and Kelly Chandler from The Bespoke Wedding Company as their wedding planner and designer, everything came together. Kelly was able to perfectly translate Carly and Tom’s vision – lush white flowers with rich green foliage, silver and crystal accents, crisp white linen and lots of candles. There was no veering from the theme when it came to the bride’s wedding crew. Carly’s gorgeous strapless wedding gown was created by the legendary American designer Vera Wang. Her four bridesmaids wore elegant white floor-length numbers, while

The weather was set fair for a timeless summer celebration in the English countryside and, as guests mingled in Stoke Park’s grounds in the warm sunshine, this became the second of Carly and Tom’s standout moments from their wedding day. Carly says: “I know everyone says this, but the first high point was walking into the church – all decked in white and green – and seeing each other

WE WANTED OUR WEDDING TO FEEL UNFUSSY AND REFLECT OUR PERSONALITIES

there. And the second high point was after the dinner and formalities were over when we looked out and saw all our guests relaxing on the terrace and enjoying our celebration.” Carly and Tom’s advice to other brides and grooms is to avoid getting stressed out about the myriad choices in the run up to the wedding day. “We vowed to stay chilled out. It is so easy is to drive yourself mad with the details. Kelly was fantastic, and we could

never have managed without her, but as a couple we also made a conscious decision between us not to fuss. Our best advice is, once you make a decision stick with it and move on, rather than going back on it”. Carly and Tom’s pure white theme – with elegant flashes of gold and green – showed off their splendid English country setting to perfection. But it also set the scene for a relaxed summer party – an atmosphere, beautifully captured in Paul White’s naturalistic pictures. As Carly says: “We wanted our wedding to feel unfussy and reflect our personalities. It was an amazing celebration in fantastic surroundings, but it still felt completely personal to us.”

LONDON C A R N I VA L With 34 rickshaws, one canal boat and a glorious waterfront venue, this was a true London original with proper carnival atmosphere for Suzi and Oli Photography BEN BULL

S

uzi and Oli wanted something local and summery for their July wedding but, with limited time to spare, they also needed to think on their feet. Suzi says: “We had got engaged in the previous May, but didn’t start wedding planning until the February.” With only five months to cover all bases, what they created was a magical and relaxed celebration with friends and family. The theme was simple. Suzi says: “We knew we wanted something local and natural – a carnival feel”. From the start, they had planned this as an informal gathering and chose Islington watering hole and party space The Commissary as their reception venue. Suzi says: “It’s local to us and with a stunning setting on Regent’s Canal. We

also loved the fact that we could have a barbecue here rather than a formal sit-down meal”. Suzi found her perfect dress by Essense of Australia at Angelica Bridal, a go-to London wedding boutique in Camden Passage, and bought a frivolous feather boa in a department store on a whim. It turned out to be the perfect finishing touch. Bridesmaid gowns were also found at a department store. Suzi says: “I had a very clear idea of what I wanted, and it wasn’t typical bridesmaid gowns. The floral dresses worked perfectly with our colour theme of purple and green and matched the style of the day”. Oli and his groomsmen wore smart dark blue suits with buttonholes in the same colour theme. Their chosen venue for the ceremony was Islington Town Hall, an elegant and classical space in the round. From there, they had to get to The Commissary, and this is where

friends, family and local contacts came into play. Suzi says: “We had this idea of transporting guests from the town hall to the reception by rickshaw, but the problem was finding the 34 rickshaws we needed for guests”. With no hire companies operating on this scale, Suzi and Oli asked around and eventually found a driver who thought he could help. Despite the informality of this arrangement he came good, and on the day the magical number of bicycle-drawn carriages appeared to transport everyone to the reception. “It was a bit of a logistical challenge and it was good to see the right number turn up”, says Suzi. “One or two rickshaws got a bit lost, but our guests loved the ride and everyone made it safely to the reception”. Oli and Suzi had an even more unusual way of travelling. Having started out in a rickshaw, they then embarked on a canal boat to arrive at The Commissary by water. Like many

other elements of the wedding, this couldn’t have happened without the help of family and friends. Suzi says: “Oli’s parents have a canal boat which is usually moored outside London and we decided this would be a great way to arrive. The journey turned out to be a highlight of the day." The Commissary couldn’t have been more obliging about the quirky travel arrangements. Guests disembarked the rickshaws and walked across a floating wooden walkway to a side entrance. By the time Oli, Suzi, parents and groomsmen arrived by water they had a joyous welcoming committee on the dock to give them a heroes’ welcome. Suzi says: “Oli and I loved every minute of that 20-minute boat journey. It gave us a bit of time together after the ceremony and arriving to a sea of friends and family was just magical."

ONE OR TWO RICKSHAWS GOT A BIT LOST, BUT OUR GUESTS LOVED THE RIDE TO THE RECEPTION

Friends and family came together to dress the reception – The Commissary having obligingly given them free rein to add their own flowers and festive touches. Suzi’s mother created a floral arch in the wedding colours and talented bakers among the guests organised a cake table as follow-on to the amazing barbecue feast created by The Commissary. Even the weather gave a helping hand, says Suzi: “The previous week had been a bit mixed. On the morning we had a brief shower while we were at the town hall and then the sun shone all afternoon”. While Suzi and Oli didn’t have too much time to spare in planning, the team they assembled – from photographer and old friend Ben Bull to 34 rickshaw drivers – got into the spirit of the party. Ben, says Suzi, was a real star – hanging out of a rickshaw and climbing on and off the canal boat to capture perfect shots, also staying

on late into the evening party. Suzi found a superb hair and make-up artist Danielle Daynes, booked through Torri Harris Makeup, who completely understood her wish to keep her look natural and created a style she was delighted with. Danielle then created natural and glowing looks for her mother and four bridesmaids. Suzi also recommends their band Eskimo, who let them choose a playlist that suited their rock and soul taste and even offered guests the option for a spot of ‘bandeoke’ – singing lead vocals with backing band. Suzi says: “The bandeoke was brilliant fun, as was the live music and DJ set." Suzi and Oli’s advice to other brides and grooms is to remember that weddings can be planned in far less time than you think. “When we set ourselves a goal of getting married in five months’ time we wondered if we were mad, but actually we discovered that this meant less time to stress. Even the decisions we thought of as compromises at the time turned out to be just right on the day.” A case in point was the late afternoon wedding slot. Suzi says: “We worried about this but it was brilliant. It meant plenty of time to get ready with friends and family and enjoy that part of the day. Guests were able to manage their journeys and childcare more easily and everyone arrived relaxed. This meant the whole celebration had exactly what we wanted for our wedding day – a proper

hen Erica and Will got married in the English countryside, they hosted a traditional wedding at Birtsmorton Court. But their day had special significance in also celebrating their respective roots – Japan and America for Erica and, for Will, a proud Scottish lineage. Having married in white, and with a tartan-clad groom, Erica then changed into a treasured family kimono. She takes up the story.

ERICA Our desire to have a garden wedding landed us at Birtsmorton Court. While the setting was a 12th century English manor house and gardens, it was important for Will

and I to wear our respective traditional attire to represent our family history, culture and ancestry. The kimono belonged to my mother. She wore it on her wedding day and it was passed down to me to wear on my wedding day. My grandmother bought it for her daughters in a famous Kyoto kimono shop.  The peonies are hand-drawn and the colours are handdyed and this style is called a furisode, which indicates the long sleeves that can only be worn by unmarried women. This makes it symbolic to wear at your wedding, since it is the last day you can wear it. Putting on a kimono takes a lot of skill. Usually you need a licence, as there are many layers, ways of folding and strings to tie in order for the kimono to look elegant. As it would have been very expensive to hire someone to do this, my grandmother taught my mother before the wedding so that I would be able to wear

it. Hopefully this skill will be passed down to me, and my children, to continue the tradition. Will’s grandmother is Scottish and comes from clans MacKay and Ross. He chose the MacKay modern tartan as his kilt, wearing the traditional Argyle jacket, sgian dubh, sporran, flashes and ghillie brogues. ANNE SCHWARZ The photo of Erica and Will was taken just before dinner. It had been raining on and off all afternoon and we seized a moment of sunshine to take a few photos around the beautiful grounds at Birtsmorton Court. Then we came across this lovely overgrown wall inside the courtyard. The tropical-looking foliage provided the ideal backdrop to showcase Erica’s kimono and it was such a perfect foil to Will’s kilt. The photo opportunity was just perfect!
