F

ew things scream summer like al-fresco dining and July is the month to make this happen. We’ve hunted down the city’s best suntraps to while away the balmy evenings on page 72. Summer time also signals festival fever but for those unwilling to travel far and wide, Cornbury Festival is the event for you. This glorious three-day festival of frivolity and live music is back with one of its strongest line-ups ever. Take a look at our What’s On page to read all about it. From festivals to fashion - we’ve got a fantastically tropical shoot that provides inspiration for sultry summer nights, along with a selection of the season’s best swimsuits. You can wear one whilst poolside in paradise. Or, if you’ll be topping up your tan on home turf, turn to page 82 to get serious wanderlust over our Indonesian escape. We’ve also caught up with Ruby Wax ahead of her new tour. Read our interview on page 22. I very much hope you enjoy the issue. Ciao! ◆

Two enchanting shows at Kew Gardens this summer for children of all ages

The The Wind in the Fairies Willows Dream Adventure through Bubble Land

The Wind in the Willows is Kenneth Grahame's classic story of life on the riverbank. A rollicking yet gentle adventure with best friends Ratty, Mole, Badger, Otter and, of course, the arrogant, vain and hilarious Toad. This critically acclaimed, outdoor theatre production set against the magical backdrop of Kew Gardens’ lake, is packed with much-loved colourful characters, music, song and laughter. There is fun for young and old alike as the Head Chief Rabbit transforms your young ones into rabbits with a waggle of the ears and a wiggle of the nose. The young rabbits then join in the riverbank adventure with fun-filled laughs and surprises along the way. A favourite of children everywhere, this is interactive theatre at its very best. Come along and be part of the adventure! Suitable for adults and children of all ages.

In The Dream Fairies, the adventurous Honeysuckle unexpectedly meets the fairies from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Honeysuckle has lost her wings and the Dream Fairies – cheeky Mustardseed, fluttery Moth, daring Cobweb and sweet Peaseblossom – have flown off course on their way to Fairy Land. Together, with the help of all the little elves and fairies, they go on an adventure through Bubble Land to find Honeysuckle’s wings and the special map to guide them home. Small children are invited to come dressed as fairies or elves. Suitable for children aged 3–8, this production is an interactive adventure full of sing-along, clap-along songs plus bubbles, acrobatics and, of course, a sprinkle of magic dust that will enthral the young ones throughout the school holidays.

Fro m 2 2 Ju n e Well c o m e C o ll e c ti o n f you built a museum of nature in the 21st century, what would it look like? Wax LYRICAL

Ruby Wax is frazzled. Who isn't? We catch up with her ahead of her new show that fuses comedy and mindfulness Interview Pendle Harte

PENDLE HARTE: How frazzled are you today, Ruby? RUBY WAX: Not frazzled at all! I do have to write a book, but that’s a pleasure and it’s so interesting that it doesn’t feel like a job. It’s called How To Be Human and I’m writing it with a monk and a neuroscientist. It has all the answers.

University offers a master’s programme in Mindfuness and Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) so I thought there must be something to it. I only did it because they offered it at Oxford. PH: Tell us about the show? RW: It’s a comedy. You can give good information when you make people laugh. Bill Bryson does it and he’s my hero, dotting everything through with comedy. I go off piste a lot. The show isn’t about depression at all – you can’t keep on about the same thing. There are lots of kids in the audience – it isn’t old fans. It’s a fantastically entertaining show that remains conversational as well as being funny and insightful. It’s your passport to saner living. I might not be sane myself but I do a pretty good imitation.

PH: That sounds promising. What are the answers? RW: A lot of the book is their conversation. Part of our brain still functions as if it is hundreds of thousands of years ago and we haven’t yet learned to adjust our dials for the 21st century. That's why we're frazzled. PH: What is the definition of frazzled? RW: We’re all frazzled. Everybody is. It’s not being stressed, it’s thinking about stress. It’s getting stressed about stress. It’s thinking ‘why have I only got 15,000 friends on Facebook?’ and ‘why don’t I make enough money?’ We’re living in such a wired society and everybody feels that way. Even kids do. PH: Your book Frazzled advises mindful methods. Do they work long term? RW: You have to keep pumping it – it’s like going to the gym. You have to work the muscle in your brain. Oxford

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

NH_June17_Ruby_Wax.indd 22

BEING FRAZZLED isn't

being stressed – it's getting stressed about stress

PH: Is it going well? RW: So far it’s more popular than any of my other shows. I have hit the zeitgeist with the subject and it’s not a lecture – it’s funny. It’s totally scripted but I make it feel spontaneous, and then I let the audience talk and it really is spontaneous. PH: Do you find it exhausting? RW: No! Because I love it. I go out during the interval and talk to people – hearing their stories will never drain me. I hate

22 16/06/2017 12:28

ARTS & CULTURE / INTERVIEW

I HATE COCKTAIL

parties and making SMALL TALK

– that's exhausting. Doing the show isn't cocktail parties and talking to people about how successful they are and making small talk – that’s exhausting. PH: When did you first notice you were funny? RW: Alan Rickman told me when we were at the RSC. I wanted to be a classical actress and he told me it wouldn’t happen and that I should write some comedy instead. I knew at high school that I never got the good-looking boys and that being funny was my ammo. These days, at home, I’m not just funny – I’m an object of total ridiculousness. PH: What does a normal day look like for you? RW: There is no normal day. I do these eclectic jobs – this Saturday I’m teaching then doing a thing at parliament. I can work anywhere – I’ll get on a train and that’s my office.

Ruby Wax photographed by Steve Ullathorne

PH: What do you do to relax? RW: Kayak. Sleep a lot. Travel to Cape Town.

23 NH_June17_Ruby_Wax.indd 23

PH: What are you doing next? RW: I hate that question. I mean, isn’t this enough? I’ll probably do a tour for the book. I’ll need the monk and the neuroscientist though – I’ve got the monk, he’s moved in with us actually. I call him my airfreshener. He’s hilarious. But he’s very in demand (his mother was in the Kumars) and he’s kind of a movie star monk. The neuroscientist is a teacher at Yale – he’s really good looking. ◆

Frazzled, a show based on Ruby Wax’s book A Mindfulness Guide for the Frazzled (Penguin, £6.99) is at the Leicester Square Theatre from 30 May to 24 June. rubywax.net

tepping out of Wimbledon station, we are greeted with wet weather and overcast sky, occasional spots of sunshine and sun beams. However, the most noticeable anomaly is the metallic music and balloons from the distance, as just across the road from the station is Elys with The Melodians, a six-seven piece steel orchestra, just outside. The festive music from the steel drums evokes an exotic sense, more Caribbean than British summer, setting the mood for Elys’ Summer Fashion Party.

The fashion show SHOWCASED a range of this YEAR’S SUMMER STYLES

Upon entering Elys, we are greeted with busy crowds as visitors and shoppers take part in various activities in Elys’ Summer Fashion Party. There is a Selfie Pod and dotted all around the store are Beefeaters, serving as guides and ushers, as well as presenting a fantastic photo opportunity for shoppers. Banners are prominently displayed to advertise the 20% discount for almost everything in store, another key feature of the event. We join a long queue up on the second floor and accept a flute of complimentary champagne from the charming Elys staff. There are also various snacks such as popcorn, candyfloss, and slushy iced drinks. Back on the first floor are more accommodating Elys staff and Beefeaters who usher visitors around the brightly lit catwalk, in preparation for the main event of the evening; the fashion show. Throughout the store are charity collection boxes, in support for Look Good Feel Better, commemorating Beauty Week and helping the charity in helping women and teenagers face cancer with confidence.

Showcasing a range of this year’s summer styles, the fashion show features a diverse range of models of all ages and fashion brands. The show is split into themed segments, moving from denim into flounces and frills and smoothly into beachwear. A metallic theme follows and the show ends with a summer party theme. ◆ elyswimbledon.co.uk

ince 2012, Caudalie has been planting its vines all over the world. Today the brand is opening a new Boutique SPA on Northcote Road in Clapham, south London. This new 60m2 Caudalie haven, tucked away between Wandsworth and Clapham Common will open its doors this summer. It’s a lively and trendy neighbourhood a stone’s throw from the centre of London, where families rub shoulders with celebrities while wandering around independent shops and cosy cafés. Directly inspired by Vinotherapie Spa Les Sources de Caudalie, this new boutique is a modern interpretation of the brand’s heritage. With chic furnishings and contemporary finishes, the new interior design takes visitors on a tour of the brand’s history. The noble oak wood complements luxurious bronze and fresh, clean marble. Divided into three separate areas for a bespoke experience, the boutique has two treatment rooms for a unique sensory experience. The rooms are warm and intimate, thanks to the extra-wide heated relaxation bed and luxurious Italian-style shower. DR SAM AFSHAR

S A M E DAY SMILE Implants have never been so simple, painless and effective

T

hese days’ people want ‘things done yesterday’. Unlike some things medical procedures cannot be rushed. However it is possible these days to get teeth made in a day. Dental implants are the most reliable source of filling in a gap or replacing an unhealthy tooth. They also have the highest longevity number compared to other treatment options. The dental implant is screwed into the jaw bone and either a crown or bridge can be placed on top of the implant, to give full restoration. Your dentist will match the colour and shade in correctly for the colour of your teeth and gums, so it will go unnoticed that you have a ‘false’ tooth. Previously

in the implant world, the whole procedure to complete everything, from the implant the crown, took a few months to finish. Now we can fit a dental implant and crown on the same day as the dental extraction. If you suffer from missing teeth, decayed teeth, or dentures that have never fitted comfortably, you will know that it can have a big effect on your confidence and self-esteem. Everyday things such as smiling or laughing can be daunting. Yes, the dental implant is more expensive than other treatments but if money is a problem, why not pay monthly for your treatment? Now that there is no need to wait months for the healing to occur after an extraction, we are able to place the implant in the jaw bone

49 • SW_July17_Putney_Dentist.indd 49

THE TRANSFORMATION

on the same day as the tooth has been removed. You will walk out of the dentist with the biggest, most confident smile you’ve ever had! A temporary bridge/crown is fitted on the day of you minor surgery, instead of the permanent porcelain crown or bridge. In most cases, older patients have full acrylic dentures, or partial dentures. If these are not made properly, patients can suffer from discomfort from the dentures, as the hard acrylic can rub on the gums causing ulcers and sore irritated areas. With new technology, we are able to make special dentures that fit in with your implants, so your specially made new dentures will be able to anchor onto your implants, to create minimum movement as possible, the dentures will still be removable, when fitted in, they should feel as if they were fixed. What are the advantages of this technique? I T ’ S FA S T : After the initial examination, the treatment takes place on a single visit. P E R M A N E N T : The implants are permanent. If they are looked after properly, they will last a lifetime. C O N V E N I E N T : Same day implants have minimal impact upon the rest of your life. P E R F E C T I O N : The artificial teeth are custom made to give you the smile you’ve always dreamed of, no matter what condition your teeth are currently in. I T ’ S C O M F O R TA B L E : The treatment is much less invasive than traditional implant treatment, and therefore causes much less pain. LOCAL ANAESTHETIC: This implant treatment can be performed using only local anaestheticanaesthetic.◆ Dr Sam Afshar DDS MSC Principal Putney Dentists; 2a Dealtry Road, SW15 6NL 020 8785 6772 putneydentists.co.uk

A Green House

HOME & INTERIORS / PLANTS

No garden? Green up your indoor space with some leafy ferns. Just make sure you know a few basics first... Wo r d s S o p h i e L e e

Taken from

LIVING WITH PLANTS

by Sophie Lee, published by Hardie Grant Books, £15

F

erns are quite easy to maintain when you know how. They can be considered to be quite needy plants, but if cared for properly, they will reward you with lush green fronds all year round. Asplenium nidus or bird’s nest fern (pictured opposite) is a great indoor plant and looks quite different to other ferns. Moisture is very important for them to thrive and grow well. The attractive, spear-like fronds should look shiny when the plant is in good health. Ferns were extremely popular during the Victorian era and large collections were grown in conservatories, in terrariums or glass cases. Their popularity waned because they were easily damaged by coal res, but when central heating came along ferns came back into favour. Most ferns are not difficult to grow, but they will not tolerate neglect; if you go on holiday for a fortnight and forget

Ferns will not

TOLERATE NEGLECT; if you go on HOLIDAY for a FORTNIGHT and FORGET about them, they will NOT BE HAPPY

61 Chis_July17_Living_with_Plants.indd 61

about them, they will not be happy. Their compost must never be allowed to dry out and the surrounding air needs to be kept moist. They love being in bathrooms – if you keep them elsewhere, mist with water regularly. Many ferns are formed of a rosette of divided arching leaves called fronds, which unfold into a beautiful performance of foliage. These fronds are delicate and need room to develop, so when putting a fern next to the rest of your plant gang make sure they have space to grow. If any fronds die off, make sure you remove them so new ones can grow. My favourite ferns are the Nephrolepis exaltata (Boston fern) and Asparagus setaceus (aspara gus fern). The Adiantum (maidenhair fern) comes in at a sly third – however, it is not as forgiving as other ferns if you forget to water it as its leaves go very crispy very quickly. Keep ferns nice and warm, at around 16–21 °C (60–70 °F). Most people think that ferns are shade lovers, but that is not true. They love indirect light; an east or north-facing windowsill is ideal. Ferns also love to be kept moist, so make sure you give them a regular misting. Water them from the bottom and never let the soil dry out – this does not mean you should keep the soil soggy, as waterlogging will lead to rotting; just keep the soil moist. Do not water them as much in winter as they do not drink as much water in the colder months. Most ferns are fast-growing and will need repotting annually, but be careful not to bury any part of the fern’s stems or leaves as this could cause the plant to rot. ◆

HOMES & INTERIORS / GARDENS

Paving the way Introducing Patrick Martin of PM Landscapes as our new gardening columnist w o r d s pat r i c k m a r t i n

W

hat paving stone would you like to use?” This is the first question I ask all new clients and am often met with a blank look. This is totally understandable as many will not have paving stones at the forefront of their mind. Others, who are perhaps more aware, will know there is a bewildering amount of choice in natural stone products on the market. In the past, there were essentially two options. One was reclaimed York Stone so thick and heavy you virtually needed a fork lift truck to lift one slab - not to mention the price, which was akin to laying your back garden in solid gold. The other was pre-cast cement slabs in red and beige, arranged in a chequer board style and available from your local builder’s merchant. Even now we happen across these giant garden draft boards. Occasionally there is a tinge of regret as

Natural STONE LOOKS best laid in random STYLE.

we take up and remove the old paving, like you might experience sending an old 1970s Ford Cortina to the local scrap yard. All this changed in the mid 1980s with the arrival of imported Indian Sandstone. Affordable and available in a wide range of shades, colours and textures, the sandstone became widely popular and offered a whole new range of choice in natural stone products for paving and patios. Later, the sandstone was honed, cut and sandblasted to produce a much higher specification material in creams and beiges with a price tag to match. The honed sandstone had one weakness

63 SW_June17_Garden ADV.indd 63

- due to it being a ‘soft’ porous stone, it absorbed mud and dirt quite easily. This sparked a whole new industry in specialist cleaners, sealers, enhancers and polishers, enthusiastically sold to you by your local stone merchant. But they all had one thing in common - they didn’t really work. Besides, who wants to spend every second weekend from March to September cleaning their paving and patios? Enter a new porcelain paving slab. These offer a real choice in light shades without the incessant cleaning and maintenance. Since the arrival of Indian Sandstone, other imported products have become increasingly popular such as silver and blue granite, blue and black limestone, and Chinese, Brazilian, green and rustic slate. These are all excellent products and are well suited to both traditional and contemporary garden settings. In our experience, natural stone looks best laid in random style. Take three or four varying sizes and lay them in a revolving pattern with no two stones of

the same size positioned next to each other. Stone merchants can often send samples of their products in the post, but it can be difficult to get an accurate impression from one piece of stone that is 5cm square. Our advise is to ask your landscaping company to bring a range of slabs at minimum 30cm x 30cm and lay them out on the ground in the garden. Very quickly you will get an impression of what works and what doesn’t. Alternatively, you can visit stone merchants and garden centres who have displays or paved areas on the ground. Here you can view all the different products as they would look in a patio setting. PM Landscapes offer free consultations and quotes for complete design and build garden projects including natural stone patios and will supply samples of natural stone to view. ◆

etersham Nurseries is celebrating summer with seasonal recipes for the garden brought to you by the Head of Horticulture, Thomas Broom - Hughes. Thomas has created a dramatic container recipe which shows how to replicate their signature planting style. It is the perfect planter recipe for small garden owners or those wanting to add a welcome splash of summer colour to window - boxes, patios and balconies. Petersham is holding a workshop on the theme of creating a cottage garden on 16 June, focusing on the informal yet distinctive style of garden that has become known as the ‘cottage garden’. You will learn how to combine fruits, vegetables and herbs with flowers to add beauty, as well as acting as a method of natural pest prevention. Tickets cost £25 at petershamnurseries.com

Stylish Summer Container Recipe

A

t Petersham Nurseries, the horticultural team mostly use perennial plants to give a natural feel. Thomas recommends using summer bedding (Annuals) for filling in smaller containers, like window boxes and small pots. Use any mix and amount of the following specimens, depending on the size of the pot, as long as it fills the entire container and commands presence . When the plants have finished flowering or when the frost hits in November, transfer the perennials to the garden border. This should leave you with sustainable, long-term results.

INGREDIENTS 1 large ( l/c L) Indian terracotta pot 35 - 38cm in diameter 1 bag ( l/c B) of multipurpose compost Liquid seaweed fertiliser CHOOSE 5 OF THE FOLLOWING

METHOD 1 Having crocks or stones at the bottom of the pot is important as it allows drainage . Using saucers underneath the pots is recommended as it ensures the plants get enough water, especially when the weather is hot . 2 Fill container with compost until two thirds full . 3 Start with the Perennials . Use the tallest first, adding it to the back of the pot (if the pot is to be placed in front of a wall or fence) otherwise arrange the plants just off centre . This helps to keep the container more natural, and stops it from looking too neat. 4 Continue to add plants using their colour as well as their heights as a guide . Trust your own creative instincts and initiative. 5 Infill using the Annuals and finish off with further Annuals placed around just one third of the edge. Don’t go for the typical all round edging - it doesn’t look natural. 6 Mulch the top of the soil with moss, available to purchase at Petersham Nurseries . It looks wonderful and helps retain moisture in the container. 7 Remember to water well, allowing water to run through the container to ensure enough is taken up by the plant. 8 Use a weekly liquid seaweed fertiliser. Shropshire fertiliser recommended .

PETERSHAM NURSERIES is a place of calm where visitors can reconnect with nature. Its food and plant philosophy, passion and creativity make it an inspirational destination that excites the senses and provokes thought . True to its ethos the team encourages a lifestyle of positive living in sharing their experience and knowledge. FALANGHINA SVELATO 2015/16 TERRE STREGATE, CAMPAGNA If you're into flinty tones, this Gambero Rosso Tre Bicchieri Winner is the Don. It has strong mineral notes thanks to the rich volcanic soils where it's grown and is crisp and elegant. Great on its own, but even better with a mixed grill of fish and some fun company.◆

VERDICCHIO ‘RAPHAEL' 2015/16 PIERSANTI, MARCHE This particular Verdicchio is GREAT: ripe, with fat flavours, and a beautifully rounded, balanced acidity. If you know Verdicchio, you'll pair it with a plain grilled wild sea bass and let it take you back to an empty Italian beach in the 1970s, contemplating the beginning of your career with a girlfriend. ◆

GAVI DI GAVI MASSERIA DEI CARMELITANI, VITE COLTE, PIEMONTE As far as we're concerned, this one's the Pope. Typically high in acidity, with unassuming but persistent citrus notes, and a dry, elegant finish. Pair it with Lobster Linguine and then ask Ghigo to tell you the joke about the Carmelite nun. Or maybe not.. ◆

ituated on the quiet Kingston road is a little Italian eatery, named La Bottega Del Pane. Behind the tinted windows is a quaint cafe with a line of display fridges, filled with assorted food, from savoury to sweet, and an array of deli meats. Opposite lies a small counter with assorted olives and garnishes, and in the back of the seating area lies the kitchen. The owner, an extremely friendly gentleman called Rocco, explained that when the cafe first stated, food was prepared in the front, before they expanded to feature a larger kitchen in the back. Described by Rocco as a deli cafe, La Bottega Del Pane opened its

doors in 2004, where it began life as a bakery. Priding in their speciality bread, the Altamura from Puglia in southern Italy, and the kitchen is a testament to that legacy, with a large bakery area in the rear, containing mixing machine, bread racks, and a large oven. The cafe was the first to introduce this historical baked treat to London, and became the main supplier for the River cafe, an Italian restaurant in London since 1987. “And then it has just been an escalation of that.” Rocco explained, as the cafe started to serve light lunches and snacks in addition to the bread, becoming a light/soft restaurant that it is today. With summer in full swing, Rocco is keen to share his summer special dish, which he simply calls Broccoli Salad. The main ingredients consists

79 • SW_July17_LaBottega.indd 79

of broccoli, sun dried tomatoes, mangetout, toasted flaked almonds, chillies, and garlic. First start by bringing salted water to a boil, then add the broccoli and mangetout and leave for 2-3 minutes. Drain the broccoli and mangetout and cool in a bowl of cold, iced water. “To keep the chlorophyll healthy.” Rocco added. Then chop the broccoli and tomatoes, add mangetout, toasted flaked almonds, a clove of chopped garlic, and chopped chillies. Season with salt and extra virgin olive oil, Rocco emphasises, then mix everything together and serve. A very simple and light dish that is full of healthy greens, perfect for the summer. ◆

FOOD & DRINK / REVIEW

The food isn’t bogged down by showy decoration, it simply delivers on big flavours.

Light House A welcomed oasis of simplicity and comfort in Wimbledon Wo r d s S a b r i n a N u n e z

U

nderstated charm lines the roads of the residential area surrounding the Light House Restaurant in Wimbledon, traits noticeably reflected in the elegant dining room. The minimal decor, finishes and throw pillows lined up on the booths follow the narrative of being a guest in a home. The no-frills approach of the restaurant is reflected in the familiarity of the food that also offers a slight deviation to the

trimmings you would typically expect. The set menu has four starters, mains, sides and desserts and while that may seem lacking, it’s all you need. I decide on three courses to make the most of my experience, but find myself instantly torn between starting with the beetroot salad or the fish cake with spinach and hollandaise. I choose the fish and am presented with a perfectly round cake sitting under a pile of green veg and a generous helping of hollandaise sauce. As soon as my knife cuts through the veg and into the fish, I’m amazed by how easily it melts in my

81 SOUTHWEST_July17_FOOD REVIEW.indd 81

mouth - I never want it to end. Next comes yoghurt marinated chicken breast with spiced aubergine and pilaf rice. The aubergine is soft, not chewy, and is spiced just enough to add some flavor to the accompanying chicken without competing with it. The chicken itself is cooked just right and provides a good base when paired with the cilantro-laden rice. My final course is a raspberry and blueberry frangipane tart. The first taste reveals a marzipan-like texture that’s rich in moisture and each bite is bursting with berries. All around me, the patrons took advantage of the well-priced three course offer. One jovial course follows another as the wine glasses are refilled and rave reviews are made to the staff. Even if you hadn’t initially opted for dessert, it’s hard to pass up when the staff invite you to draw out your stay with a sweet treat or warm drink. The Light House’s staff and ambiance elicit comfort where everything makes sense and the food isn’t bogged down by showy decoration. Instead, the food sits in elegance on the white base of the plate and allows the expertly-crafted medley of flavours do the talking.u T H E L I G H T H O U S E R E STAU R A N T 75-77 Ridgway, SW19; 020 8944 6338 lighthousewimbledon.com

TRAVEL / WANDERLUST

T

hey say “When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life”. Well the same could be said for Indonesia - a beguiling string of volcanic islands home to resplendent beaches, Komodo dragons and jungles sheltering elephants, orangutans and tigers. It has copious amounts to offer travellers and with thousands of islands, reveals itself to you more and more each trip. Having visited on a gap year I was thrilled to be returning to the country as a proper grownup, this time visiting Seminyak on Bali. We stayed at The Oberoi, a beachfront sanctuary boasting world-renowned service and some of the best sea views on the island. An enormous swimming pool filled with stone turtle fountains takes centre stage in the grounds, surrounded by tasselled parasols that overlook a stretch of beach. You can peer at the crashing waves and the distant tourist touts from the extreme comfort of a sunbed predressed with towels and equipped with sun cream, cold water and frangipani scented facial mist. Heaven. Further back from the sea and dotted throughout beautifully tended gardens are traditional thatched-roof lanais and private villas.

INTERIORS INSPIRED BY NATURE AT NIHIWATU

VILLAS ARE BUILT INTO THE NATURAL LANDSCAPE

We opted for a luxury villa with a secluded courtyard garden, rock pond and raised dining pavilion, but the cheaper Lanai rooms are just as impressive. Inside you’ll find marble floors, enormous king-sized beds with hand-carved wooden headboards, four types of pillow, thick curtains to keep out the light and excellent air conditioning. A lovely bathroom contains more fluffy towels than you could ever need, plus two sinks and sumptuous bath scrubs, soaps and moisturisers. Throughout the rooms are well-thought-out details such as antimosquito spray, a day bag for the beach and both indoor and outdoor slippers. Dinner is a relaxed affair at the romantically-lit Kura Kura restaurant, named after the turtles that nest on the nearby sands. Expect European and Indonesian delicacies, with innovative dishes like seared Pacific scallops, Indonesian satay, udang goreng tiger prawns and Rijsttafel, a sumptuous legacy of Bali’s Dutch colonial tradition. Breakfast is served in the delightful, open-air Frangipane café where there is a huge range of options including duck or chicken eggs, pork or beef sausages and dozens of juices. Should you wish to leave the complex,

NIHIWATU is one of the MOST PRISTINE resorts on THE PLANET Seminyak’s market, health cafes and boutiques are well worth a visit, as is Ubud, roughly a two-hour drive. Based in the uplands of Bali, the area is known as a center for traditional crafts and dance and is dotted with Hindu temples and shrines, surrounded by paddy fields. Also famed for its food scene, we stop off at Casa Luna restaurant for a traditional Balinese cookery class. Headed up by chef Janet De Neefe and her friendly staff, we discover the herbs, spices and techniques of Balinese cooking as well as the ceremonial and cultural significance of food. Preparing a lavish feast as a group, we create chicken curry, wok-fried eggplant, coconut and anchovy sambal, bean-coconut salad and moreish sago pudding. Suitably stuffed, we return satiated and sleepy to The Oberoi. The next day, we hop on a quick private flight to Sumba - an island largely untouched by tourism. Despite being twice the size of Bali, Sumba’s population

ROOMS AT THE OBEROI ARE LUXURY PERSONIFIED

THE OBEROI HOTEL IS A HAVEN IN SEMINYAK

barely reaches a sixth of Bali’s population. Nihiwatu - twice voted the world’s best hotel by Travel + Leisure magazine - is our destination. Once the preserve of savvy surfers, its unspoilt beaches attracted Claude and Petra Graves in 1988 as they searched for the perfect wave. They fell in love with the place and named it Nihiwatu, meaning “mortar stone”. By 2012, stories of the unregulated freedom and beauty of the resort reached American entrepreneur Christopher Burch, who came on board to expand the resort. An exotic combination of remote location and understated hedonism, it now attracts the global jet set and fashion elite.

TASSLED PARASOLS AT THE OBEROI'S OUTDOOR POOL

The OBEROI boasts some of the BEST SEA VIEWS in Bali The resort’s social and ecocredentials are top notch. Food miles are kept to a minimum: vegetables come of the resort’s own organic market garden; meat from its chicken farm; fish from the sea. Each of the 28 exquisite villas are designed to incorporate the surrounding nature, whether it’s swaying palms, colourful bougainvillea or dazzling ocean. We stay in one of Burch’s very own villas - perched upon a terrace with a spacious outdoor veranda, a private pool and a butler on speed dial. Interiors are open-plan, reflecting simple Indonesian architecture and using local materials like Alang Alang, teak and rattan. Exceptional villas aside, this hidden gem is for travellers in search of activitydriven experiences and unregulated freedom. There are countless things to do, from surfing, fishing and horse-riding

87 Chis_July17_ Indonesia.indd 87

to sunrise yoga, tours of the on-site chocolate factory and escorted trips to nearby villages. We try out the Spa Safari - a 90-minute trek through rice fields to Nihi Oka - a show-stopping area high on the cliffs. Greeted with fresh coconuts, you enjoy breakfast and lunch on a platform suspended among the trees and then head to a private section for unlimited spa treatments. Back at the resort there’s plenty more to entertain. The dreamy Boathouse bar, right on the edge of the waves, is a surfer’s paradise and offers spectacular sunsets. Ombak restaurant, overlooking the ocean, is ideal for intimate dinners as well as convivial feasts organised by the hotel like weekly BBQs and white parties. End your evening with a private outdoor cinema experience under the stars, but don’t forget to set your alarm for at least one early morning - you wouldn’t want to miss the chance to release baby turtle hatchlings into the ocean. They say Nihiwatu is on “the edge of wilderness” and with good reason. Offering authentic Indonesian experiences and surroundings in five-star luxury, it has to be one of the most beautiful and pristine resorts on this planet. ◆

OBEROI BALI & NIHIWATU Eight nights in Indonesia with Abercrombie & Kent costs from £2,795 per person. This price includes Garuda Airlines international and domestic flights, a half day gastronomic journey of Indonesian cuisine, three nights at the Nihiwatu in a One Bedroom Villa on full board basis and three nights at the Oberoi Bali in a Luxury Lanai Room Garden View on breakfast basis. Please call Abercrombie & Kent on 01242 547 895 or enquire online at abercrombiekent.co.uk

rustrated by the avalanche of cutesy prints adorning parental essentials after the birth of her daughter, Laura Adeshiyan decided there was room in the market for something a little bit classier. She wanted products that made her feel like herself again, and with a background in fashion retail she felt able to design something she wanted to buy. The result is Mama Rules, offering beautifully soft muslins with refreshingly modern prints. Alive & kicking It’s difficult and demanding but having its moment in the sun. So why study Latin? W o r d s L u c y H o l l a n d & C h a r l o t t e H u g h e s D ’A e t h

I

sn’t it a dead language?” That's what pupils ask on discovering we have a Latin club at Repton. But Latin is back, enjoying a resurgence in recent years which is gratifying for those of us who endured the uncool years. All that time, learning vocab in dusty forgotten classrooms, and endlessly responding to friends’ incredulous queries as to what we were wasting our time for, means we're placed to answer the leading question….

Knowing Latin, one can appreciate JK Rowling’s debt to Latin in her spells and curses; and that, without Virgil’s Aeneid, there would surely have been no Dante’s Divine Comedy, one of the greatest works of world literature, and influential as a source of inspiration ever since. It provides a route to a huge range of other subjects such as history, literature, philosophy, theology and archaeology. Twinned with ancient Greek, the scope is further widened: a treasure trove which includes Homer and Hesiod, the Greek tragedians and a wealth of philosophical works. Latin broadens the mind and not just the tongue.

T H E L I N G U I ST I C ARGUMENT A prima facie…: (at first glance….) A knowledge of Latin helps with learning the Romance languages WITHOUT VIRGIL’S AENEID, SURELY DANTE, ABOVE, WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN (romantic not because of their ABLE TO WRITE THE DIVINE COMEDY? perception of love but for their relation to the Romans…). The most widelyspoken of these are Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, and Romanian. Similarities in both vocabulary and grammatical structure mean a knowledge of Latin is helpful. The joy of being able to work out a word in Spanish and unlock a sentence because of your knowledge of Latin is akin to scoring a goal. Understanding the logic of Latin grammar is invaluable for grasping the intricacies of English as well as Arabic grammar. Although neither of these is its directly mirrored in Latin, understanding the terminology and how it ‘works’, helps one to appreciate and describe how these languages function more readily. With around 60% of English words derived Latin literature, indebted to that of ancient from Latin, it increases both vocabulary, Greece, extends through the masterful prose articulacy and an appreciation of language. of the Golden Age of the Republic, beyond the Empire to the Europe of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, where Latin was the T H E C U LT U R A L C L I N C H E R lingua franca of the educated. A little less prosaic, but hardly less compelling… The study of Latin leads naturally on to With Latin one can encounter the military reading Latin literature and encountering first history of Julius Caesar, the stylistic paragon hand, and in the original language, texts which that is Cicero, the witty and ribald poetry of have influenced European and world culture. Ovid, the works of Descartes and Isaac Newton.

THE BRAIN TRAINING Audentis Fortuna iuvat (Fortune favours the brave) Reading Latin is like code breaking. Once one understands the grammatical structure, one can begin to translate and understand. As English novelist Dorothy L. Sayers argued in her 1947 essay, The Lost Tools of Learning, “The best grounding for education is the Latin grammar... not because Latin is traditional and mediaeval, but simply because even a rudimentary knowledge of Latin cuts down the labour and pains of almost any other subject by at least 50%.”

J U ST F O R T H E L OV E O F I T Ars gratia artis (art for art’s sake) Latin enthralls and fascinates. Our years spent exploring the Classical world at school enriched our lives. The members of our Latin Club at Repton are united by their curiosity and appreciation of this language, discovering it is alive in situations they had not thought of. It may be dead but Latin remains very much alive and kicking! ◆ Lucy Holland & Charlotte Hughes D’Aeth Repton School Dubai

here’s an outstanding bill for broken windows at the Hereford Arms pub in South Kensington after American servicemen smashed them during a baseball game. Bomber pilot and Major League Baseball star Elmer Gedeon was one of the servicemen

who stayed in homes converted into temporary barracks during the Second World War in Hereford Square. Some of these fell victim to an air raid and were razed, and a post-war apartment block was built on the site until developer Unbranded London decided to restore the terrace to its former glory. Now, it’s unveiled three restored townhouses which are a far cry from their former incarnation. The properties range in price from £8.56m - £9.25m with more information available from Savills (0207 581 5234).

REDUCED: DUSTY’S OLD HOUSE

A

t £15.5 million, Dusty Springfield’s former home is now £1 million cheaper than when it first came on the market in 2016. The Art Deco house has seven bedrooms, five reception rooms, a garden, and a roof terrace with far-reaching views overlooking Holland Park. There’s also a swimming pool, gym, sauna and hot tub. The American couple selling the house aren’t too bothered about the reduction, one would imagine, as they bought it 10 years ago for just under £3 million. Dusty Springfield lived at the property at the height of her fame during the late 1960s and early 1970s, a period which saw her release five albums and enjoy several hits, most famously "What I Done To Deserve This" and "Son of a Preacher Man." The property is now for sale with agent John Taylor (02032 841 888).

ast year, press reports revealed Strictly Come Dancing's self-styled ‘Mr Nasty’ Craig Revel Horwood had been forced to move into a hotel for five months after his Hampshire home was damaged in a flood and his London pad was occupied by two Strictly dancers. He recently told The Sun that Cameron Mackintosh lent him £40,000 in 1997 to buy the house in Camden for £149,000. He has accepted an offer on the Grade II-listed two-bedroom which had been on the market for £1.2m. It has a large kitchen, roof terrace and garden, where he’s named a fountain after friend and former Strictly contestant Kelly Brook. More information from Hotblack Desiato (0207 482 2894).

ome of the world’s most famous rock and roll albums were recorded at Wessex Recording Studio, including The Clash's "London Calling", "Never Mind the Bollocks" by the Sex Pistols and Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody." Other musicians to have used the studio include REM, Coldplay and David Bowie. The building started out in 1881 as a church hall but was converted during the early 1960s into a recording studio and then bought in 1965 by Beatles producer George Martin who, in 2003, sold it to developer Neptune, which converted it into apartments. A two-bedroom flat within the gated complex is currently for sale at £730,000. More information from agent Hotblack Desiato (0207 288 9696).

Be guided through London's ever colourful and evolving market.

I

f there’s one thing about the London property market that is a constant, it’s the superlatives that most use to describe it. Extraordinary, outrageous, most expensive, smallest, fastest-rising, largest, most famous, highest-priced. I could go on. The capital has achieved them all – and that’s just over the past year. Here’s our guide to some surprising, and of course, amazing facts about the city’s property market. 1

We’re moving

Londoners move 4.6 miles on average, well under the national average of 6.6 miles and the shortest distance moved in the UK. Removals website buzzmove.com crunched the numbers from among 51,000 house moves it’s organised since 2013. Home movers in the East of England move the furthest at 12 miles, followed by Wales and the South of England. “This data shows that the myth that people don’t travel far when they move is just that – a myth,” said Damien Seaman, Head of Brand at buzzmove.com. “People move for a wide variety of reasons, but this data shows that people are clearly willing to relocate quite far away according to their circumstances.” 2

London’s a cr ow d

If you think London is too crowded then remember that the city only recently surpassed its 1939, pre-war total of 8.62 million.

All prime property in London is currently dropping in value, research by Savills has revealed this month. Its report on the market shows that prime central homes have reduced by 6.9% compared to a year ago, while prime NW London is down 3.2% and prime SW 4.4%. The area with the smallest reductions year on year is prime West London. 6

Older residents will remember when, during the decades after the war, much of central and inner central London was a ghost town in the evenings and weekends and only started to fill out again during the 1980s. 3

The top pick of Justin Marking, head of residential at Savills, for 2017 is the suburban restoration project, which he says is where you can “add value and take advantage of the differentiation between London and the country, which still exists”. R e n ts i n r eve rs e

The prime rental market in London has been sliding for a while now, particularly in the £1,000 to £1,500 a week market where rents have fallen by 7.6% year on year, according to Knight Frank. 8

The priciest property on the market at the moment is a fivebedroom apartment for sale within One Hyde Park, the Candy & Candy confection just over from Harrods. It has three reception rooms and a huge set of picturewindows offering views over Hyde Park. Got the cash? Call Knight Frank on 020 7591 8600.

Should you invest in London’s buy-to-let market?

I

t’s a question crossing many people’s minds as they plan for their financial future in the capital. If you were to tell friends that you’re planning to become a landlord, you would most likely be met with a wall of scepticism and furrowed brows. Over the past two years, they will tell you, landlords have felt the increasingly expensive effects of government action. Landlords buying a property now pay an extra 2% Stamp Duty, and many of the tax perks that landlords once enjoyed have been reigned back, and will disappear by 2020. On top of that, many boroughs in London have, or are considering, introducing compulsory landlord licensing. This can be both costly and a tangle of regulatory tape to navigate. For many investors, London’s buy-tolet market remains an enticing prospect despite these hurdles to entry. The number of rented homes in London exceeded the number of owner-occupied

ones recently – 898,000 rented households compared to 883,000. Overall, the number of owner-occupied households has dropped by 17% over the past decade. Demand for rental properties is increasing, unfortunately for tenants faster than inflation - at 3.2% - according to the most recent LSL Buy-to-Let Index. It also reveals that London still has the most expensive rental properties in the UK at an average of £1,286 per property. “[Recent] predictions that a flood of landlords would abandon their buy-to-let portfolios have been greatly exaggerated, in fact we have seen very few clients exit the rental market this year – most are actively looking to invest further,” says Marc von

Grunherr, Lettings Director at Benham & Reeves Residential Lettings. “Property continues to remain a very stable investment in light of stock market volatility and historically low interest rates," von Grunherr adds. “The fundamentals continue to remain strong and that is why our outlook on London property continues to be bullish. Professional investors have been able to navigate these legislation changes and capitalise on these localised rental hotspots.” Rents are also rising as demand outstrips supply. The good news for tenants is that it is not a blanket rule; demand and supply varies from postcode to postcode, so not everywhere is a hot house of increasing rents. With 16 branches across the capital, one of London's largest letting agents Benham & Reeves Residential Lettings has research that reveals the best postcodes to live in if you’re a tenant and, potentially, the best to consider if you’re a landlord looking for the areas with the strongest demand – and therefore fastest-rising rents (below). As you’ll notice from these postcodes, the most popular areas for tenants at the moment are the areas of London to the south and south west of the river which, until relatively recently, were less popular areas to rent a home. Sky-high rents in central London and more fashionable parts of North London have pushed many trend-seeking young workers into the arms of southern postcodes and, in particular, Brixton, which is currently one of the most sought-after areas to rent in London among younger renters. Best for landlords, where rents are rising fastest (+4% or more), are in south west.
