e are feeling quite starstruck this month. Meeting so many heroes can be quite overwhelming. Talking to Joan Collins, for instance, was exciting because of the huge legacy of her screen presence – she's a proper Hollywood icon and her enduring glamour is fascinating. Fittingly, she has launched a beauty range, one which, we hope, will share the secrets of her incredibly well-preserved looks. And on the subject of looks, we have been dazzled by the otherworldly beauty of model Jourdan Dunn, west London girl-turned international supermodel, whose startlingly long legs and warm smile make her unforgettably luminous. Plus, we were beside ourselves with excitement at meeting Jamie Oliver

15 NH_July16_EDS_LETTER.indd 15

– and not only meeting him, but having an actual cooking lesson with him. His new cookery school at Westfield is offering classes in a huge variety of kitchen skills, and while they won't all be taught by the man himself, his large team is set to supply west London with a host of new talents. Jamie was very likeable, we discovered, and his huge personality attracts lots of fans. But on a calmer note, we are also focusing on this month's unmissable Masterpiece arts fair as well as some stylish interior stories and all the usual local events and happenings. Enjoy July. ◆

howcasing 5,000 years worth of art and design in one week is quite a challenge. However for Masterpiece London — Chelsea Hospital’s annual cross-selling show – the process is a sophisticated, seemingly effortless affair. Met with rave reviews and massive commercial success since its beginnings in 2010, the fair has become one of west London’s compulsory society engagements, with a record 40,000 visitors attending last year. Masterpiece London mixes a profitable cocktail from the themes of art, design and pleasure; motifs whose paths have often crossed over the course of history. It is a rare opportunity for art admirers, serious collectors and socialites to mingle among the finest objets d’art and antiquities that the world has to offer; the quality so high that The British Museum, Tate and V&A have all previously made purchases. With such big names providing endorsement, it is easy to see why Masterpiece London has become a

household name in just six years. Nazy Vassegh, the show’s chief executive, believes that it ‘is now firmly regarded as both a leading international art fair and a welcome addition to the summer season in London.’ The 2016 fair is planned to be more ambitious than ever as Vassegh continues: ‘Masterpiece has continued to strengthen every edition. We are looking forward to another great year.’ So what can we expect from this show that has leapt from strength to strength, offering up a globe-spanning trove of delights?

GENEROUS OFFERINGS

Once your cultural needs are sated, it is time to address other appetites. Added to the already sparkling line-up of dining options for this year is the Perrier-Jouët Champagne Bar — which is open-air, offering a welcome relief from the close, dark exhibition rooms and offers stunning views of the Royal Hospital Chelsea. It’s not all about self-indulgence, however: the hugely successful charity dinner is back, this time supporting partner ‘Children in Crisis’. Beginning with a raffle and silent auction that will run the duration of the fair and ending with the prestigious meal, served to a chosen few at Le Caprice, it is an opportunity to raise vital funds. Since its commencement, Masterpiece London has helped to raise a total of £3.8 million for its charity partners. u l Masterpiece London is at The Royal

S

he’s known not only for her glittering acting career and her OBE, her writing and her impossibly youthful looks but also for her serial marriages – all five of them. Dame Joan Collins is the grande dame of British Hollywood stars and her life has been – and continues to be – impossibly glamorous. Her portrayal of Alexis Carrington in 1980s soap Dynasty defined the decade, not least for her way with a shoulderpad – and when she had a clearout of her possessions last year, among the items up for auction in Beverly Hills were a collection of letters from Warren Beatty as well as a glittering array of diva dresses, power suits and vintage Louis Vuitton travel trunks. All this and she’s Cara Delevingne’s godmother too. Collins was born in Paddington and grew up in wartime Maida Vale. After studying at RADA, her varied film career took in everything from horror films to pantomime via German soap operas and she even played the Queen Mother to Elizabeth Hurley’s Queen in TV's The Royals. Now, fittingly for someone who appears to have discovered the secret to eternal youth, she has launched a beauty range. ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

PENDLE HARTE: Your career has been multi-faceted. What is your favourite area of work? JOAN COLLINS: Acting without a doubt, although I really like writing too.

If you want to do SOMETHING YOU NEED to be DISCIPLINED enough to give up CERTAIN PASTIMES

PH: You’ve worked with some big names. Who have you enjoyed working with most? JC: Paul Newman was a great friend, a great actor and a great humanitarian. I loved our comedy scene in Rally Round The Flag, Boys and we remained good friends for life. I also adored the late Sir Nigel Hawthorne, one of Britain’s greatest actors and I was privileged to work with him in Clandestine Marriage. He also became a good lifelong friend. PH: As a lifelong Londoner, how do you feel about the way the city has changed over your lifetime? As the French say, “plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose”. Of course London has changed radically. So has New York, LA, Paris – any great city evolves. But London has remained the cultural centre of the world with its immense choice of museums, art gallaries and theatres.

my vision of walking into my wardrobe and smelling the luxurious, calming scent of I am Woman. I envisaged my customer smelling the fragrance as I do and wanting to spend time in there, so I thought it would be a wonderful idea to have that same scent fragrance available to infuse your bedroom, sitting room or anywhere where you just want to relax, unwind and feel feminine. For the lipsticks, we felt that it would be a wonderful idea to name them after characters I’ve played over the years. For example, Fontaine was a wild woman so we created a hot, flirtatious pink for her, Alexis was a powerful, strong woman which is portrayed through a deep burgundy colour. I also believe that a good bright lipstick gives you confidence; when you see someone wearing red they have an aura of pride about themselves – Elaine, the inspiration behind our red lipstick, was a spy in the 1940s; a strong, clever woman and that is portrayed through our bright and fiery red.

PH: Tell us about the new skincare/ make-up range. JC: I have been very fortunate to learn many beauty secrets from so many great makeup artists and celebrities through the years. So I wanted to share my knowledge with other women, as I know how confident and great makeup makes me feel. Creating the Timeless Beauty range has enabled me to give others that same confidence when wearing make-up, which is what inspired me in the beginning. It was created for women who take pride in their appearance and know the value of investing in their skin. I have total input with everything we do. There are so many celebrities who are ambassadors for makeup brands and fragrances nowadays, but with the Timeless Beauty collection I am a partner for the range which makes it very different. I have been part of the collection from the beginning; I’ve chosen the colours, had input in the design and made sure that all benefits of the products are what I believe in. The reed diffuser from the Body & Soul collection was inspired by

PH: You also have a new novel out (The St Tropez Lonely Hearts Club). How do you find time to write? JC: I make the time. If you want to do something you need to be disciplined enough to give up certain pastimes – reading, TV, shopping – and carve out the hours needed to write. PH: What’s next for Joan Collins? JC: Next I’m very excited about my One Woman show Joan Collins: Unscripted, touring around the UK in September and October. Also I am working with a great cast – Pauline Collins, Joely Richardson, Franco Nero and Michael Brandon – on a new movie The Time of Their Lives. ◆ Joan Collins’ Timeless Beauty collection is available now at Marks & Spencer

EMILY COHEN

MY FAVOURITE PIECE FROM SUNUVA’S CURRENT COLLECTION… EMILY: This season I really love the

boho dress for girls, especially the little pompoms, shells and fringing detail. Perfect for any little boho beach bum – worn with one of our classic straw cowboy hats and pretty espadrilles. SABRINA: Our watermelon print with shades of neon pinks and reds, it looks fabulous on our beaded swimsuit – boho, cool and UV protective.

SABRINA NAGGAR

COSTA RICA COMMON PROJECTS TRAINERS

MY FAVOURITE DESIGNER… EMILY: I am a sucker for Isabel Marant, but like to mix things up: ancient Greek sandals, Isabel Marant tops, AG jeans and splendid t-shirts. You can never have too many trainers, Golden Goose are my favourite. SABRINA: As much as I would love to be dressed head to toe in Saint Laurent and Balmain, the reality is that I’m mainly in jeans. This season it’s J Brand flared sneaker jeans, James Perse t-shirts and Common Projects trainers

MY STYLE ICON… EMILY: Sarah Jessica Parker - I think

SABRINA: Elle Macpherson. I think she’s super cool in a relaxed sporty way and doesn’t look over-groomed.

MY FAVOURITE HOLIDAY DESTINATION… EMILY: I love an adventure mixed with good beach. One of our family favourites has been Costa Rica – a great and varied trip with surf camp, kungle ziplining, rapid river rafting and virgin rain forest trekking. SABRINA: I love active travel adventures and exploring different

he phrase ‘festivalready hair’ seems to be tossed around an awful lot during the summer months and whether or not you’re intending to brave the prospect of camping during the ‘British summer’, images of enviable waves and intricate updos abound. If you’re anything like me, attempts to recreate these styles always end up looking more Pippi Longstocking than Poppy Delevigne. Luckily, Duck & Dry on the King’s Road is here to help. Customers can choose from eight blowdries and eight updos, encompassing everything from relaxed beachy waves to sleek fishtail plaits. They have also set up a feather bar for summer, incorporating real feathers into their 16 signature styles. I arrive and am welcomed by Jabu, my friendly stylist who offers me a coffee and a seat. Flicking through the lookbook, I settle on a ‘Grecian Chic’ updo, which involves a half my hair being put into two French braids and the ends twisted into a bun while the other half is manipulated into soft curls. A beautiful brown feather is affixed to a couple of strands and is curled along with the rest of my tresses. I emerge with hitherto unachievable, Instagram-worthy hair.. ◆

GEORGE MEYRICK Meet the star of British polo How did you get into polo? My father and grandfather both played, so that’s where my love for the sport came from. We always had horses around but I started playing properly at Pony Club. And was it an instant love for the game? Yes. From day one I knew it was more than just a hobby. It was something I wanted to pursue as a career. When did you start playing professionally? I was 17. I finished my last year of school and the plan was to go off and study further but I needed to concentrate on my training. Do you feel that you missed out on your teen years? In my final two years of school I spent a lot of time in Argentina so I felt like I missed out on that but at the same time, I’ve gained so many incredible experiences. How many horses have you had and do you have a favourite? It’s impossible to say. You can use up to 10 in a game, so you can imagine how many I’ve played with in 10 years. I’ve got a couple that have been with me for a long time and they’re very loyal. Your favourite country to play in? I love playing in England, of course, but excluding the obvious, South Africa is a really great place to play; you’ve got the nice weather and a bit of beach too.

Cos Costume COS

We love swim season. Finding the perfect bikini, however, is something we hate. Thankfully, Cos are making it easy with their stylish and functional designs.

SOUL FOOD Beloved Italian restaurant Enoteca Turi may have moved location but its fantastic cuisine and family atmosphere remains unchanged

J

ust over 25 years ago, Enoteca Turi began its life as a regional Italian trattoria offering an authentic, cultural food experience to the local people of Putney. The restaurant has evolved over the years, but Enoteca Turi continues to stay true to its original idea based on the simple model of an Italian meal at home - a daily culinary experience with fresh seasonal produce and accompanying wine. The restaurant relocated at the start of this year after being unexpectedly uprooted from its former home. It has now found the perfect location in Pimlico Road, becoming part of a vibrant new community. Under the guidance of architect Francesco Draisci, the new premises were renovated in just six

weeks to create a carefully crafted, relaxed and stylish atmosphere. The end result has been remarkable: a golden wall adjusts with the light to give a different atmosphere at lunch and dinner, the acoustic ceiling absorbs sound, creating a soft background hum, whilst the long mirror panels open up the dining room which seats an intimate 50 covers, providing ample space between tables. Enoteca Turi comes from across the river with the same team, the same heart and the same ethos. Pugliese-born owner Giuseppe Turi’s philosophy echoes the honest simplicity of the regions, offering a food and wine sensation inspired by a culture rich in history, flavour and freshness. Over the years, Enoteca Turi has built up a great network of local suppliers. It gets its fish from the

As its namesake would suggest, translated from the Italian word “enoteca” meaning “wine library”, Enoteca Turi has a unique and impressive list of over 400 individually selected Italian wines, offering something for every palate and price level.

ABSOLUTELY / PROMOTION

The move has been a stroke of luck, as just 15 minutes from Putney, the new destination is easily accessible for its former, loyal clientèle who continue to return in great numbers. The success of the move must be credited to General Manager, Cesare Papagna, Assistant Manuel Sorana and their team in the front, who ensured that the smooth transition meant that the restaurant was able to start again as though it had never closed. In the kitchen new Head Chef Gonzalo Luzarraga leads the existing team and with Sous Chef Fabio Angella, is providing dishes that reinterpret the regional Italian tastes. 

Oliver’s ARMY

Jamie Oliver has opened a new cookery school in Westfield. Absolutely has a lesson with him Interview Pendle Harte

J

amie Oliver’s team is visibly nervous. He is on his way, but not here yet, and there are lots of people waiting for him. This is the launch of his new cookery school in a dedicated space attached to Jamie’s Italian in Westfield. Jamie himself is coming to give a cookery demonstration and we, his class, have been given clear instructions on where to sit and what to do. You can’t help but like him when he arrives; even if watching Jamie Oliver cook is a bit like watching a Jamie Oliver impersonator cook. His trademark style is so consistent and so particular that it almost seems to be a pastiche. ‘Chilli – it’s such a beautiful thing,’ he says. ‘We’re going to smash it. We’re going to bash it. Give the lemongrass a spank.’ He is making a Thai curry and rhapsodizing about the pestle and mortar – ‘the most important piece of equipment in the kitchen’ – almost as

if it were an entirely new invention that nobody had ever heard of. This is typical Oliver. His boundless enthusiasm creates the impression that he’s the only one to have ever thought of doing something, like making dinner. His target audience, whom he is seeking to ‘empower’ by transforming them from ‘non-cooks’ to functioning dinner makers, seems to me to be a questionable demographic. Because surely, in 21st century west London, everybody has dinner at home sometimes? And makes it in their kitchens, using things they have bought from an ample supply of local outlets. What Oliver gushingly refers to as ‘absolutely incredible fresh ingredients’ are undeniably lovely but as herbs and spices, wholly credible. All the hyperbole is a bit wearing, but still, the message is simple. Come to the cookery school and learn to improve your skills.

We’re going to SMASH IT. we’re going to BASH IT. give the LEMONGRASS A SPANK

FRAGRANT THAI GREEN CURRY Serves 8

I n g r e d i e nt s • 4x200g free range skinless chicken breasts • olive oil • 2x400ml tins of light coconut milk • 75g pistachio nuts Green curry paste: 6 spring onions • 4-6 fresh green chillies • 2 cloves of garlic • 2cm piece of ginger • 10g lime leaves • 2 sticks of lemongrass • 1 tblsp coriander seeds • 1 teaspoon low salt soy sauce • 3 drops of fish sauce • ½ a bunch of fresh basil • ½ a bunch of fresh coriander • extra virgin olive oil • 3-4 limes

‘All you need,’ says Oliver, ‘are 10 recipes that can save your life. The mother ship recipes that you can return to again and again. After that it’s super happy days all the way.’ The message is that anyone can cook, which may seem obvious, but Oliver’s belief is that some people are too scared, or that cooking is too alien, and that his role is to demystify the whole process. And this has always been his way – it’s now 20 years since he first burst onto our screens as The Naked Chef. And for a jobbing chef to be catapulted to stardom so quickly was huge, he reminisces. ‘Being the Naked Chef was like being in One Direction,’ he says. He credits himself with revolutionising the British kitchen and encouraging men to cook where previously they had simply arrived home and asked their wives what was on offer for dinner. Whether this is true or not, it’s undeniable that Oliver has made a huge impression on the nation and its eating habits. The cookery school will offer classes like ‘Pizza and Prosecco’ and ‘Vietnamese Street Food’ which are clearly attempting to tap into the foodie zeitgeist – a bright

move that is likely to draw in any who feel intimidated by the thought of gourmet home cooking. Which brings us to Thai curry. The green Thai curry – first tasted by Oliver on his 15th birthday, when it ‘blew his mind’ is a dish, he says, that’s ripe for ‘bastardisation,’ by which he means that it has been adopted by the British canon and is now one of our favourite dishes. His version, which we make under his instruction (recipe left) is faultless. And there’s the success of the school – I bring my creation home for dinner and am enormously proud. Thank you Jamie.  The Jamie Oliver Cookery School is staffed by six trained chefs and features TV screens to make following the recipe even easier, state-ofthe-art induction hobs and USB phone chargers in customer lockers. Classes include fresh pasta making, Thai curry, knife skills and more. jamieolivecookeryschool.com

M e th o D 1 To make the paste, trim and chop the spring onions, deseed and finely chop the chillies, peel and finely chop the garlic and ginger, tear up the lime leaves, squash the lemongrass, remove the outer layer and finely chop. 3 Put it all in a pestle and mortar or food processor with the coriander seeds, soy and fish sauces, fresh herbs, 3 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil and a pinch of sea salt and black pepper. Mash or whizz to a smooth paste. Grate in the zest from the limes to taste. 3 Slice the chicken into 2cm pieces and marinate in a little of the green curry paste for 30 minutes. 4 Heat a drizzle of olive oil in a pan or wok and add the chicken pieces. Fry for 4 minutes, then add the remainder of the curry paste. 5 Stir in the coconut milk, bring to the boil and simmer gently for 8 minutes. Season to taste with sea salt and black pepper. 6 Serve with rice and top with chopped pistachios.

Paint it White Absolutely goes in search of advice on the whiter shades of pale Wo r d s P e n d l e H a r t e

hoosing paint colour for your walls is daunting. It’s tempting to go for white because it’s always stylish in an airy, Scandi way – and it will make your rooms seem bigger, too, right? Unfortunately, wrong. Apart from that not necessarily being the case, just choosing white isn’t really any kind of decision because the concept of white probably covers more shades than any other colour. You might have chosen white, but which white is it? A brief look at colour cards will show a vast spectrum of whites. And interestingly, what we see as white has become more and more grey over recent years. “Our perception of neutral has changed; what we felt was white 15 years ago is now incredibly yellow to the modern eye,” says Joa Studholme, Farrow and Ball’s international colour consultant and probably the UK’s most influential colour guru. “We’ve gone greyer as time goes on. All our greys are selling like hot cakes — and these are becoming the new neutrals; soft and organic, as in French Gray or Pigeon, or darker, even going into Off-Black walls with Pitch Black woodwork. What has replaced

magnolia as the classic neutral is a cool, chalky Cornforth White, which has a grey undertone. Nobody wants colours with a yellow base any more.” Not that she’s all that keen on an all-white scheme throughout a house, and her belief is that, counter-intuitive as it may sound, painting a dark room white isn’t going to disguise its darkness – and anyway, darkness isn’t necessarily always a bad thing. ‘A small space painted white is very boring,’ she says. Generally, it’s good to try strong colours in north-facing rooms, while south-facing rooms can remain neutral,’ she says. Sympathetic whites are calmer and more interesting looking than dazzling, toothpaste whites that can feel cold and stark. A warm white, on the other hand, can be cosy and create a good backdrop for colourful furnishings as well as contrasting skirting boards, doors, window frames and architectural details. ‘Think about the architecture. Do you want features such as cornicing to stand out? But don’t be a slave to it. Just because it’s a Georgian house don’t think you have to have a Georgian colour scheme. And of course, light is key. Ultimately, it’s what you feel comfortable with,’ says Studholme. When decorating, it makes sense to

start with the hall. For one thing because it creates a first impression, and for another it can set the tone for the rest of the house. Paint it a dramatic dark shade, for instance, and it will create the illusion of extra brightness for rooms leading off it. Also, painting doors and frames the same colour can create a grander, more finished effect, and coloured doors add interest to white walls and ceilings. Whether you want a warm white or a cool one, a clean one or a muddy one, tester pots are the only way And for more advice, consult Joa Studholme's invaluably detailed, practical and inspirational new book, How to Decorate, published this month by Octopus Books, ÂŁ30 . u

PAPER CHASE Wallpaper designer Marthe Armitage reveals the methods behind her beautiful hand-painted designs Wo r d s p e a r l b oy d

ABSOLUTELY: Can you tell us how about how you began your career? MA: I still call myself an artist. I began my career as a painter. I went to Chelsea School of Art. We had won the war and it was a wonderful time to be there because all those great painters, like Picasso and Matisse, were still alive and working. Soon after I left art school I got married had children and moved to India for 2 years. After they were born it became almost impossible to paint but I didn’t stop being creative. I had done a bit of lino cutting and I had observed fabric printing at the art school. The thought came to me that I had always been interested in repeat pattern. I realised I could make my own blocks and print, even from home. ABS: How did your time in India affect your work? MA: When my first child was only two months we left for India. We spent two years there as my husband was an architect designing public buildings in the Punjab. In evenings we would wander down to the bazaar where you would find men printing bedspreads on long tables in the open air. Seeing them at work, printing

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

NH_July16_MARTHE ARMITAGE.indd 78

in their hit and miss way, made me realise that you could do things yourself. I would only need the block, some colour and paper and I’d be away. Coming back to London, I found that I could do this when the children were at school. The first paper I created was for our own house and it looked good – so I carried on and made more prints.

I find it TERRIBLY IMPORTANT to have ACCURATE INFORMATION for my DRAWING

ABS: How did you create your first wallpapers? What was the process? MA: I found the one part of the house that wasn’t used for anything else, which was the landing and made a very makeshift studio. At the local hardware store I bought lino, lining paper, paint and a small roller. I put the paper on the floor and then had to stand on the block to create pressure to make the print. It was a very haphazard process but I liked the effect and created a few designs. Eventually a friend convinced me it was time to get my own press. ABS: Tell us about your press and how it developed your work. MA: My printer friend decided that we should go to a large second-hand printing warehouse in Brixton, so off we went.

78 27/06/2016 10:58

HOMES & INTERIORS / Q&A It was a vast place with machines as big as houses but hidden in the corner there was this small unloved proofing press. I looked at it and said ‘well I think that will do.’ The next thing, of course, was the paper. I managed to find half a tonne of the right paper and that’s how it all began. It wasn’t planned really; somehow it just fell into place. ABS: Can you tell us about the process of creating a wallpaper design? MA: First of all, plants are my vital source as they so effortlessly turn into a repeat – they flow over the walls and there is an endless variety that you can use. Walking round people’s front gardens I sometimes see a plant that will go into a pattern and sketch it straight away. For me, the core of all visual art is

I like to HAVE THE SUBJECT in front of ME, ESPECIALLY with plants idea of gardens so then it was plain sailing. Henry James is a writer I’m very fond of and he happened to say that the two happiest words in the English language were ‘summer afternoon.’ I wanted to capture a perfect English summer afternoon. The garden needed to feel alive. I added the children having a croquet match, a gardener observing the scene and a little girl showing him how she can dance. There are also some cheeky foxes. My ideal garden has statuary in it and so I took inspiration from Chiswick House very near my home and studio. The lions were inspired by the ones there. As always, taking inspiration from the plants was absolutely key. You’ll find a tomato plant, pears, roses, blackcurrant, even buzzing bees to represent the honey in Red Roses. I loved drawing the bees. ◆

drawing. I like to have the subject in front of me, especially with plants. In the winter I often use books and in the summer, I draw in front of the plants themselves. I find it terribly important to have very accurate information for my drawing. To design a repeat pattern, I make a small grid of four sections and then trace everything onto it. You see what space you have, join it up and create a rhythm in the design. It’s always space filling with my design. Then I trace it onto a piece of lino and just start cutting. Once you’ve cut it it’s irreversible. ABS:What was the inspiration behind your design for Jo Malone London? MA: The Jo Malone London creative team came to see me and we had a great discussion. We thought about the river, about plants and planting and then gardens. Everybody was happy with the

his is a brand to bookmark: an NYCbased upstart that reimagines classic forms in a fun, contemporary way. The SS16 collection is effortlessly lovable, from its simple summer dresses and pleated tops to dungaree-style rompers in seasonal stripes and earthy shades of peach and ochre. The brand’s blend of old-school charm and modern spirit is as Brooklyn as a refurbed brownstone, capturing perfectly the idea of something familiar and traditional brought coolly up-to-date by a discerning eye for design. What’s more, the company ticks all the right ethical and ecological boxes – and the quality of the garments is top-notch. Prints are subtle, colours vivid yet soft, lines fluid. A very modern but simple take on classic kids apparel. 

GIRL The unbelievably beautiful Jourdan Dunn launches her first kidswear collection Wo r d s : P e n d l e H a r t e

J

ourdan Dunn is dazzling. I can’t stop looking at her legs. She is such a perfect specimen of a human that she almost doesn’t look human at all but slighly android with her endless legs and the insanely beautiful colour of her skin. As though someone dreamed her up, fashioned her out of otherworldly materials and then Photoshopped her. One thing she definitely doesn’t look like is a harassed working mother. But working mother she very much is, albeit not so much of a harassed one. We are in the bright white penthouse suite at the ME London hotel, which is dazzling too (especially after the long black corridors you have to transverse to get there), its curved windows allowing spectacular views of London. Which is apt, because London is what we are here to discuss, or rather LonDunn, the model’s new kidswear range launched for Marks and Spencer. But it’s hard to focus on the clothes when Jourdan’s looks are

One thing she definitely DOESN’T LOOK LIKE is a harassed WORKING MOTHER

so distracting, and impossible to imagine her as the gawky west London teenager she says she was when she first got scouted ten years ago, in Hammersmith’s Primark, of all places. ‘I grew up being very insecure with the way I look. I was always the tall, lanky one – it’s not good when you’re 12 years old and everyone else is up to your shoulder.’ Of course people were constantly telling her she should be a model. ‘But it was the last thing I wanted to do,’ she says. Dunn broke the mould not just for being the first black British model to make the Forbes list of top-earning models – and last year for being the first black face on the cover of British Vogue since 2003 – and for twice winning the British Fashion Awards’ Model of the Year – but for walking the catwalk while pregnant. This is something she sees as evidence of how supportive the fashion industry has been of her. ‘I was very nervous when Jean Paul Gaultier asked if I could walk his couture catwalk – I was like, does he not know

KIDS & EDUCATION / INTERVIEW that I’m seven months pregnant?’ But he designed an oufit for her bump and she looked amazing. When her son Riley was born in 2009, Dunn was back at work for London Fashion Week just ten weeks later. Now she lives between New York and Ealing, where her mother lives. ‘That’s where I feel most connected,’ she says. ‘My mum has been a huge support. I feel comfortable going to work knowing that Riley’s with her. He’s in good hands.’ Modelling wasn’t at all what Dunn expected it to be. ‘My introduction was watching America’s Next Top Model and I saw all the underwater shoots and stuff like that so I thought it would all be different crazy shoots all the time. And then it wasn’t really like that. But still it was a totally different world from what I was used to – suddenly I went from being just a teen in Ealing to working in New York with people from all over the world.’ She cites her favourite shoots as being anything with Burberry and Christopher Bailey – ‘he’s the nicest person and I love

He's in good hands

his vision’ – and besides, it was on Dunn’s first Burberry campaign that she met Cara Delevingne – ‘and we formed a great friendship, so I’ve always enjoyed doing Burberry.’ Appearing in a Beyoncé video has been another career highlight. ‘That was such an unreal moment for me. I grew up pretending I was another member of Destiny’s Child and used to get on people’s nerves with my singing. It blew my mind to be asked to be in her video – first of all, Beyoncé knows who I am – that’s crazy! Then it was madness to be in her video.’ And her worst modelling moment? Falling, of course. ‘Nobody wants to fall on the runway. Especially not when Naomi Campbell’s there. Even though luckily it wasn’t on camera because it happened as I was turning to go off, still everybody noticed and backstage Naomi was shouting: ‘Who fell? Who fell?’ so I had to admit it and it was really embarrassing. I think my dress got caught in the heel.’ Dunn’s new design venture started as a

reaction against children’s clothing being ‘all about the girls’. Initially it was going to be just a boys’ range – ‘but then I realised that there are some girls who don’t want to be looking like a princess – some of them want to be putting on their brother’s t-shirt and rocking that. So a lot of the pieces are unisex.’ The collection spans 22 pieces, many of them referencing her son with the letter R or 09 for the year he was born. ‘When he first saw the collection he tried it on without me even asking him.’

87 NH_July16_JOURDAN_DUNN.indd 87

What’s next? Another collection, plus maybe some womenswear. ‘As I was designing, I was thinking about different kind of looks and things I’d want in my size, which has opened my mind to designing for women,’ says Dunn. Watch this space.  Lil’ LonDunn by Jourdan Dunn is exclusively available in 70 M&S stores in the UK and selected international stores and websites marksandspencer.com

KIDS & EDUCATION / SCHOOL TALK

Instant message A parliamentary inquiry has been launched amid concerns of a ‘sexting epidemic’ in schools, reports Amanda Constance Wo r d s A M a n d a C o n s ta n c e

I

s your child sharing ‘dodgy pics’ or ‘nudies’? This is apparently what teenagers call the nude pictures or sexually explicit texts they send to each other – they leave it to the media to call it sexting. If they’re in their early teens, it’s quite likely that your children are involved. Schools report a sexting epidemic with thousands of children sharing sexual imagery online. Very few realize that they are acting illegally and could face police action if caught. “Sexting is extremely common and increasing,” said Helen Harris, deputy head at a north London school. “Girls do not appear to care that their images will be there for ever or that strangers will be viewing them. They think we are very old-fashioned and everyone does this and it’s no big deal.” But there are many who are worried. Following research into the issue, in April this year a parliamentary select committee launched the first ever inquiry into the scale of sexual violence and intimidation in schools. Committee chairwoman and Tory MP Maria Miller warned that action needed to be taken urgently. "It's clear from the young people we've heard from that sexual harassment and sexual violence in schools is having a profound impact on their day-to-day lives. We need to address this issue now, and stop it from blighting the lives of another generation.” Sonia Livingstone, professor of Social Psychology at the London School of Economics, said sexting had become a normal behaviour among young people. Sexual activities and conversations have become more constant in youngsters’ lives “because every young person now has a phone in their hands”, she said. She suggested that sex education should start at the age of five. “Give it a lot more time, give

EVERY Young person NOW HAS A phone in THEIR HANDS young people a lot more respect and start much earlier,” she said. There’s no one kind of sexting incident. In some cases it may be coercive and connected to bullying. In others it’s seen as ‘having a laugh’. Girls fear falling victim to ‘snaking,’ when a boy befriends them, leads them on and asks for a picture only to distribute it among his friends, and beyond. When one teenage girl’s picture was shared after she sent it to a boy with whom she was in a long-distance relationship, her mother asked her why she’d sent it. “I thought we were in love,” she said. “I didn’t think he would do anything like that.” Year 9, when teenagers are 13 and 14 seems to be ‘peak sexting’. Although, an investigation by The Times with 50 secondary schools found that more than a

89 Chis_July_16_EDUCATION JULY.indd 89

third of all sexting cases involved 12 and 13 year olds. Alarmingly, it also found that one in 10 cases involved a ‘non-school adult’. Very few children realize that their actions could put them on the sex offenders’ register. Sending and distributing indecent pictures of anyone under the age of 18 is illegal. Maria Miller, the former culture secretary who chairs the women and equalities select committee, has urged education secretary Nicky Morgan to make it compulsory for schools to report to the police any sexting by or to under-18s. “It shouldn’t be under schools’ discretion,” she said. “It is an illegal act.” But many are concerned that the panic over young people sexting is overblown and that children should be supported and educated rather than punished. Jules Hillier, chief executive of Brook’s chief executive, the UK’s largest sexual health charity, thinks the media is at fault. “It is reported as though it were prevalent, as though every young person was doing it. It’s sensationalised and over-reported. “We know of course that young people are using mobile devices the whole time. We know there’s a trend for sending pictures with sexual content, but the extent to which that’s happening is very difficult to fully understand. A recent reliable survey found that 12% of 11- to 16-year-olds have seen or received sexual messages online. That’s obviously quite a big minority, but it’s still very much the minority. “We need to be helping young people understand some of the risks – helping them to be clear about what the law is. Whilst they quite often know that the age of consent is 16, they are not then aware they are still considered a minor if it comes to sending photos of themselves and would be in trouble for that kind of behaviour.” 

he beating heart of Italy, Tuscany offers every traveller something unique. Boasting some of the best food and wine in the world, an undulating landscape like no other and a rich culture of art, literature and music to enjoy, Tuscany is a holiday destination you’ll come back to time and time again. Tuscany Now & More, the area’s most knowledgeable villa specialists, have a wide assortment of rustic farmhouses and chic villas to rent. Whether you want to escape into the verdant hills of Val D’Orcia or to architecturally impressive Lucca, the selection of homes on offer covers the region far and wide. When it came to booking our week away, scrolling through the many beautiful homes showcased on the

93 CHIS_July16_Tuscany.indd 93

website was enjoyable in itself, but an hour in and a pastoral little bolthole in the Italian town of Capannori caught our eye. The farmhouse, known as Casa del Colle, is a short drive from both Pisa and Florence, and it's a quintessentially Italian home with all the mod-cons you could wish for, as well as your own private swimming pool. The location of the villa is key although the pretty surroundings make it hard to leave - as a cheap flight into Pisa keeps costs down and proximity to Florence means a day trip here is a must. The house itself sleeps four comfortably, and seven slightly less comfortably. The kitchen has everything you could need should you want to get inventive. There is a large BBQ to the right of the terrace, ideal for grilling seafood bought from the local market in the morning.

TRAVEL / WANDERLUST

At harry’s bar, one of FLORENCE’S MOST FAMOUS restaurants, THE PASTA is to die for A small brick staircase leads down to your private pool, which, while relatively simple, serves its purpose - whether you use it for a cooling dip from the midday sun or to pump out some morning lengths in a bid to work off the wine you sunk the night before. If you’re heading to the villa with kids, not only is there the pool to splash around in, there’s also an enclosed garden with a large trampoline where they can bounce away the afternoon. The surrounding area is a playground for the curious traveller. As mentioned, a day trip to Florence is mandatory. It offers everything from world-class food to some of the most breathtaking artworks in the world. Park just outside town and take a convenient tram into the city centre – from there, wander the ancient streets, being sure to keep looking up – the architecture dates back to the Roman era and is truly something to behold. Key sights include the Medici Chapel – the mausoleum of the Medici family, the most influential

family in Florence from the 15th to the 18th centuries. There’s also Il Duomo di Firenze – the city’s looming cathedral – gothic in style, it dates back to the 13th century when it was first designed by Arnolfo di Cambio. Another sight to see is the Ponte Vecchio – the city’s old bridge – which is striking in itself because of the shops built into the structure of it. Fancy

a bite? There are plenty of wonderful eateries scattered throughout Firenze, but our favourite has to be Harry’s Bar, one of the city’s most famous restaurants where the pasta is to die for and the veal Milanese is so good you might want to order it twice. Nearby Lucca is a small city and commune, just a short drive from the house and pretty as a picture. The city is surrounded by a Renaissance-era wall, and within are little shops, a piazza and plenty of great local eateries. While away an afternoon digging into perfect pizza and sipping on Aperol. The local area of Capannori has some great little finds, including a sweet authentic eatery, Il Giardinetto, where the food is cheap and pretty darn tasty. There’s also a great winery nearby, in San Gennaro, Fattoria di Fubbiano, where you can go on a wine and olive oil tour around the estate, before enjoying a wine and olive oil tasting. With everything one could want, and much more, from a sunny getaway, make Tuscany the next place you visit. And call in a little help from Tuscany Now & More. u

REBECCA NOONAN

y love of property stems from childhood. I was born in Brent Knoll, a small village near Bridgewater in Somerset, but my earliest childhood memories are in Wiltshire. When I was five my father’s work meant a family move there and my parents bought a bungalow which needed renovating. The house was in a large plot of land and we all lived on site whilst the lengthy development. Years later I ended up playing football with some of the builders who worked on the house, and they all had great tales of a much younger me helping out on site. Fast forward quite a few years, after returning to England from a spell working as a climbing instructor in South America, I moved to London and started saving up for my first home. This was the early noughties and it was relatively easy to get a mortgage and get my foot on the property ladder – I’m not sure it would be such plain sailing today. When I’m not working I still love to travel. I’m also a keen sports

Everyone is very friendly and there are great local businesses who all support each other

fan, particularly Formula 1 and motorsport. Last year I went to Monaco to watch the Grand Prix, which was quite a spectacle. I live with my wife and our six month old son in South West London, we feel very lucky to live in such a special place. I used to make a point of living all over London, as the capital has so much to offer, but then I met my wife and her love of South West London won me over. Working in property just clicked for me, it is something I am extremely passionate about and managing the Fulham sales office is a real pleasure. Being part of an independent estate agency, we have a relatively flat company structure which gives us the autonomy to have a real impact on our branch

and clients can see we always work with their interests at heart. The property market in Fulham is so diverse and we are blessed with a wealth of beautiful properties in the area – which makes my job much easier. The pace of development is phenomenal, successfully marketing quality new builds like Mulberry House has certainly helped to increase our profile in the local market. Featherstone Leigh Fulham is the most central of our South West London locations. The strong neighbourhood feel is a rarity for London. Our office on New Kings Road is at the centre of the local community. Everyone is very friendly and there are some great local businesses who all support each other. Fulham has a real lasting popularity in South West London. Often, if clients are looking to move home they will only move within a quarter mile radius, and why not when everything is here. SW6 is a vibrant and sophisticated part of London which has so much to offer. My top tip: if you pop to Australian café Barossa you may even see some famous faces – David Tennant is often a regular! 

MOVING OUT

Where to go if you’re saying goodbye

I

t was revealed recently that 65% of Londoners intend to move out of the capital in the next five years. Whether it’s the prospect of battling the choked streets, dodging parking tickets or playing sardines on the tube, something is pushing people out. The research, by agent Strutt & Parker for its annual Housing Futures survey, also revealed that of those intending to move, 29% said they were looking to move to the South East, 10% to East Anglia and 8% to the South West – while 3% were looking to move overseas. But surprisingly few were looking for an easier, simpler way of life, the survey showed. Londoners, it would seem, want to get out of the smoke but still want the latte guzzling, cinema visiting, gym bashing, theatre attending, fashion finding, fast broadband life we enjoy in the capital. “It was also interesting to see that not all Londoners looking to leave the capital are expecting to move to a much larger home with a lot of land,” says Stephanie McMahon, Head of Research at Strutt & Parker. Whatever the reason for your move, here are some of the most popular places people choose to go to in each of the counties around London, as revealed by personal finance website TotalMoney.com. u

CAMBRIDGE: One of the further afield magnets for those escaping London is Cambridge and the ‘golden villages’ to its south. The city is a one hour and 20 minute train ride into Liverpool Street from Cambridge’s main, central station while from Great Shelford, for example, it’s 10 minutes quicker. Local agent Bidwells says Cambridge’s popularity is easy to spot as you approach the city, which is currently crammed with cranes as some 14 homes developments proceed – a huge number for a small conurbation like this. In bustling Manchester, for example, there are 21 new projects under way. All of this is pushing up house prices in Cambridge which have risen by 50% from their pre-financial crash high, and rising by 13.6% at the moment, according to Hometrack. u

HOMES with HISTORY London developments with a story

A

s you travel around London it can feel like every street is being redeveloped from huge towers of gleaming glass to smaller, more boutique affairs. And you’d be right. The capital is the scene of a significant building boom at the moment as developers race to keep up with demand. Last year some 25,000 new homes were built from luxury penthouse apartments to studio starter flats. It may not be as much as the government had hoped would be built, nevertheless it’s still a lot of new bricks and mortar to squeeze in. But all is not as new as it seems. Underneath the builders’ dust and the glossy hoardings, there is plenty of London’s history peeking out. You may think you’re buying a swish new pad, but it could be where Kings frolicked, power stations belched, Roman centurions bathed, doodle bugs exploded, weights and measures were calibrated or TV programmes recorded. With at least 2,000 years of a turbulent, colourful and rich history below and around us, who knows? Here are some of the developments for sale at the moment where such history can be found.

ROYAL RIVERSIDE CITY OF LONDON

Apartments from £750,000 ater Lane has a fascinating history. W It’s within the boundaries of original Roman London and is where the first roman quays and baths in Londinium were built. The site later became one of King Henry VIII’s favourite entertainment spots and then much later a location for Sir Christopher Wren’s Custom House. This was blitzed during WWII and replaced with the HQ for Tate & Lyle. But now it’s more about suites than sweets. Today, 165 apartments are being built on this bankside plot, which overlooks Tower Bridge, the Tower of London and the Thames. Landmark Place, 020 7048 0344 or barrattlondon/landmarkplace.

OLD ASYLUM MUSWELL HILL

Apartments from £585,000 t Luke’s hospital was one of the first asylums in the UK to care for S those with mental health problems and, after being housed first in Moorfields and then Old Street, a third complex, on Woodside Avenue in Muswell Hill, was built

Old Smoker, Battersea Starting from £1.975m

during the 1930s. In its first two pioneering but now seemingly barbaric incarnations techniques were developed to cure patients including cold water plunge baths, designed to ‘shake patients out of their insanity’. The later, third hospital was closed by the local Foundation Trust in 2011. The site is currently being redeveloped into 161 apartments and has been renamed Woodside Square. More information, 020 85018777 or woodsidesquare.co.uk.

FORMER RAIL WORKS STRATFORD

Apartments from £399,950 his site was where some 1,702 T steam locomotives, 5,500 carriages and 33,000 goods wagons were built for the Great Eastern Railway from the mid-19th century until 1991 when the last of the works closed. The area was a massive hub for railway lines,

More information, 020 8003 1718 or prospecteast.co.uk.

WEIGHTS & MEASURES OFFICE CLERKENWELL

Apartments from £815,000 id you know that the police were once responsible for testing D weights and measure to ensure market traders weren’t ripping off their customers? In 1889, they ceased doing so and a separate inspectorate was set up. In 1892, it set up shop in purpose-built premises at No.5, Roseberry Avenue, where it remained until 1928. Now, it’s being redeveloped into eight high-end apartments including a modern rear extension to the existing Victorian, high-ceilinged property. Prices range from £815,000 for a one-bedroom flat to £1.6 million for a duplex apartment. More information, Colliers on 020 7101 2020 or 8over5.co.uk.

OLD SMOKER, BATTERSEA

Starting from £1.975m attersea Power Station belched coal-stained smoke over London B for over 50 years before ceasing operations in 1983. It then stood empty and increasingly derelict until 2012 when a viable scheme to redevelop it was finally launched with Malaysian backing. The work continues today and parts of the residential complex are slowly being released for sale. The most recent includes The Power Station where prices start at £1.975 million for a two bedroom apartment, including several which will sit within the original fabric of the building and include exposed brickwork and industrial fittings. More information, 020 7501 0678 or batterseapowerstation.co.uk.

BOMBED OUT CHURCH, CLAPHAM JUNCTION

Four bedroom property: £2.55m rive up St John’s Hill from Clapham Junction and on the right D hand side, you’ll see what used to be St Paul’s Church. But prayers and evensong are long gone. Built in the mid-1860s by the St John’s Hill developer

143 Chis_July16_HISTORICAL_HOMES_DPS.indd 143

Charles Wix, it was hit by a V1 flying bomb during the Second World War. This destroyed its interior and, despite a refurbishment after the war, by the 1970s it was derelict and an attempt to turn it into a community centre floundered. In 2015 it was converted into four luxury homes, one of which is for sale at the moment via Portico on 020 7099 4000 or portico.com.

FORMER TV STUDIOS, HAMMERSMITH

Starting from £715,000 iverside studios in Hammersmith is one of London’s artistic hubs R famous for its TV studios where for many years Dr Who was filmed, as was Hancock’s Half Hour and popular children’s programme Play School. But after plans were drawn up to redevelop the site, a Dalek-like battle raged over the site’s future with Sir Peter Blake objecting to the plans and Bill Bailey supporting them. But in 2014, it was demolished and is being replaced with 165 one, two and three bedroom luxury apartments. Some TV heritage is to remain, including three brand new TV studios on the site. NOTTING HILL FILM FLAT STARTS A NEW CHAPTER

t is easy to forget how successful the 1999 romantic comedy Notting Hill was. After its release fans would flock to see the bookshop on which Hugh Grant’s fictional outlet in the film was based, and an auction to sell the blue door featured in the film made newspaper headlines. The film cemented Grant’s reputation as a movie star and centred on his character’s on-off relationship between famous actress Anna (Julia Roberts) after she walks into his independent bookshop. Richard Curtis penned the story after visiting The Notting Hill Bookshop in Blenheim Crescent, just off Portobello Road. The apartment’s owner Sarah Anderson is moving out after living above the shop for 35 years – she sold the business in the 1990s before the film was made, but continued to run it for the new owners until 2005. It’s on the market for £1.495m.  Marsh & Parsons 0207 313 2890 marshandparsons.co.uk

popular with the super wealthy. But if you want to rent rather than pay a hefty price to buy one, then a four bedroom, third-floor apartment is available to rent for £22,500 per week or £1.17 million a year. The property offers a gilded existence of panic rooms, bulletproof glass, post that’s x-rayed before being delivered and a tunnel through to the neighbouring five-star Mandarin Oriental Hotel. The apartment also has a swimming pool, sauna and steam room, private exercise suites, treatment rooms, gym and golf simulator.  Tunstall Property 0203 011 1775 tunstallproperty.co.uk

You might have to pick a pocket or two to afford this unique property as it’s on the market for £965,000. Converted in the 80s, it was originally used to store grain, tea and spices, and is considered one of the more authentic warehouse homes in the neighbourhood. The apartments were all sold as shells which means each one is unique and can be re-modelled again. On the fourth floor, with one reception room and one bathroom, it’s got exposed brick walls, beamed ceilings and plenty of light throughout. ctress Kate Winslet recently scooped the Best Supporting Actress BAFTA. But the Titanic star is almost as famous for getting into scrapes with neighbours. Most recently she moved with husband Ned Rocknroll from New York to live on the West Sussex coast. The couple bought a Grade II-listed house for £3.25m but fell out with Natural England who feared her plans for a barrier would damage the habitat. The actress experienced similar problems with her previous home in Treyford, where she was forced to withdraw an application to build a wooden gate. Winslet’s first forays came after making her name in Titanic back in 1998 when the then 22-year-old used £200,000 of her fortune to buy this three bedroom getaway in Angarrack. It’s now got a £400,000 price-tag.  The Modern House 0203 795 5920 themodernhouse.com
