ABSOLUTELY’S June issue highlights

Ivividly remember my first ever day in a professional journalism role. I had received a 2:1 in my degree and had planned on travelling the world, but a job came up in North London and I decided to follow the money. It was a lifestyle magazine, which was what I wanted to get into, so I couldn't turn it down. I turned up on my first day, in a crisp new suit which got strange looks from the rest of the dressed down team, and I was ready for my first assignment... which was to go and interview a radiator designer.

To say I was a little crest-fallen was an understatement. And yet, some 20 odd years later, I now realise it was ahead of its time.

The home and all the wonderful design facets that go into creating a delightful abode was just taking off – little did I know then, what we were writing was ahead of the game.

Now, very much in tune with what's hot and what's not, our Absolutely Home special returns with interviews, tips and a few unmissable trends. Radiators may not play a role, but they are never far from my mind. Enjoy the issue

From Peter and Jane with Pat the dog and What to Look for in Summer, to classic fairytales like Chicken Licken and The Three Little Pigs – just one look at an iconic Ladybird book and you’re instantly transported back in time by the distinctive designs that captured the imagination and hearts of so many children.

‘The Wonderful World of the Ladybird Artists’ exhibition, open now at St Albans Museum + Gallery, uncovers the story of the talented artists who illustrated Ladybird books and recounts the fascinating history of the little Loughborough print business. Visitors will be greeted by a ‘Wall of Books’ showcasing just about every Ladybird book issued between 1940 and 1980 (around 500 books) and can leaf through over 200 shared books in a ‘Summer Meadow’ installation of ‘grassy’ rugs and comfortable beanbags, plus interactive games. Colourful and family-friendly, the exhibition is the brainchild of Ladybird book expert and curator, Helen Day (pictured), who has spent more than 20 years collecting books and researching the company. Launched in 2018, the exhibition has toured the UK, but it has always been Helen’s ambition to bring it home to St Albans where she was born. Helen’s parents were both teachers in St Albans, Helen went to Cunningham Hill primary school, worked in Oaklands College for many years and went on to teach English as a foreign language around the world. Current cinematic hit The Fall Guy, as featured on this month’s culture opener, celebrates the movie stuntman, but what is the job really like? Nicholas Daines tells all

It’s a pretty tiring thing chatting to Nicholas Daines. One minute you are talking about representing Team GB at gymnastics, the next discussing life on a Hollywood set, before moving on to global concerns and conservation – even throwing in a little chat about wine tasting. With so much to touch upon, it makes sense to start at the beginning. “I was a very outgoing child full of confidence and bubbly personality. I was also very disciplined, especially at school, trying my hardest in every subject,” he says, dismissing any notion this was one exuberant child who could be the class distraction.

“My gymnastic talent was discovered by accident really,” he says on the first turning point in his life. “My sister went to gymnastics and she would then come home and teach me everything she was being taught on the upstairs landing and in the garden. Looking back, she was an amazing coach. She then took me along one day to her club and after the recreational class finished, I started tumbling and her coaches were amazed by what I could do and quickly facilitated putting me in touch with a boys club – a facility known as Brown, within the army

barracks, which was at the very heart of the origins of gymnastics in this country.”

Nicholas’s talent saw him eventually represent Team GB. “Representing your country in any sport is tough, but never more so than in gymnastics,” he looks back at the achievement. “Initially I competed all six pieces in artistic gymnastics, but then specialised in Double Mini Trampoline for British Gymnastics and finally made it into Team GB to compete internationally at the age of 30. So, I did it by sheer persistence and was part of the team for the 2003 World Championships. Representing Great Britain and wearing the tracksuit was a total honour and the pinnacle of my sporting career.”

Sport soon made way for Hollywood glamour. “I had a natural ability for throwing myself around with great spatial awareness, so when I started to navigate the entertainment industry, stunts were a natural fit,” he explains stage two of his career. “I was once an extra on TV’s The Bill and there was a stunt being performed on the show that day where a man was jumping backwards from a platform attached to a car as if he were being hit as it reversed. I looked at him and thought, well I can do that and with a double twist! So, I

joined the British Stunt Register, which is the most recognised organisation in the world for supplying stunt performers and coordinators to the film and television industry. We’ve just celebrated our 50 year anniversary and now I am one of the directors of it.”

He made his big screen bow in the Michael Caine-starring Last Orders, before a franchise behemoth came calling. “The Harry Potter movies were my next big break into the world of stunts and I was a part of the stunt quidditch team chasing the qua e on mechanical broomsticks! It was a dream to be part of. I even got to play a Ravenclaw pupil in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. I can almost guarantee I was the oldest student at Hogwarts at the ripe old age of 35!”

What is life like on set as a stuntman?

“Every day as a stuntman on set is di erent,” Nicholas says. “You might be doing anything

“I guarantee I was the oldest student at Hogwarts at 35”

from jumping o a building, to being hit by a car or set on fire. You’re constantly playing make-believe and I love my job as I get paid to never grow up! Of course, there is also a very serious side to the job. It’s a highly skilled, highly disciplined environment. You have to have your wits about you at all times and make sure that every aspect of health and safety has been executed before action is called. But I go to work some days and I’m a cave dwelling creature or I’m a thug fighting Batman or running away from dinosaurs.”

It was during his time working on Harry Potter that he resided in Hemel Hempstead. “I was living in Apsley at the time,” he says. “I would love driving through the steep hedgerow side lanes of Flaunden and make my way on all the backroads to the Alford Arms pub in Frithsden on a summer’s afternoon with the roof down (I’ve always

owned a convertible). One of my favourite things to do was also to visit the little village of Aldbury, which to me is the epitome of a quintessential English village with the village pond in the middle of it surrounded by cute cottages. The pubs on the green in Chippenham were also top spots for a drink showing o the area to friends and giving them the real English countryside experience when visiting from abroad.”

From doing work that has made others look good, Nicholas is now front and centre with a presenting career that goes from world worries to wine. “I’ve always been passionate about science and wildlife, studying microbiology at the University of London (Queen Mary), obtaining a First-Class Honours degree,” he explains the former. “However, I knew looking down the end of a microscope for the rest of my life was not an option, but it is wonderful that my story has come full circle and now science and nature are a huge part of my life with my presenting work. I love exploring e ective ways of getting youngsters involved in conservation, educating them and getting them to really understand the problems wildlife in this day and age are facing and giving them the right tools they will need to try and clean up the mess we’ve made.

“The Grape Press came about through my passion for wine. I love making videos I’m passionate about and so I made some videos presenting the wine and vineyards of Stellenbosch and Paarl in Cape Town South Africa for my YouTube channel. The entertainment business can try to pigeonhole you, dictate that you have to focus on one area, but I have always fought against the mould. I believe we have the ability to be more than just a one-trick pony and I hope I never stop adding more strings to my bow.”

FLAVOUR Mediterranean

Recipes from the Italian coast

Words AMBER GUINNESS

Frittata di zucchine

A very thin zucchini and basil omelette

Serves 1–3

I first came across this quick and easy summer dish when I was lunching with friends in a restaurant in southern Tuscany on a baking hot day. We placed our order and happily carried on chatting and sipping chilled wine, getting hungrier by the minute. A er nearly an hour, the waiter realised he’d forgotten to put our order through. He disappeared into the kitchen and almost immediately reappeared with a frittata di zucchine to apologise and tide us over. Needless to say, the sweet basil and zucchini encased in egg and cheese was delicious. If you’d like to offer this as a main, allow one per person and serve with salad.

INGREDIENTS

• 2 organic eggs sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

• 25 g (1 oz) unsalted butter

• 1 tablespoon olive oil

• 1 zucchini (about 150 g/51/2 oz), top removed, sliced into thin discs handful of basil leaves, roughly torn 20 g (3/4 oz)

• Parmesan, finely grated

METHOD

1 Crack the eggs into a small bowl, add a generous pinch of salt and a few grinds of pepper and whisk with a fork. Melt the butter with the olive oil in a wide frying pan over a medium heat.

2 Pick up the pan and swirl the fat around so that it goes up the side of the pan to avoid the egg sticking later.

3 Once it starts to sizzle, add the zucchini and gently toss to ensure it is evenly coated in oil and butter. Leave to cook without stirring for 3–4 minutes.

4 Add the basil and toss, turning all the zucchini slices over to brown the other side. Cook for another 3–4 minutes until the slices are golden on both sides and the basil has wilted. Make sure the zucchini is evenly spaced in one layer over the base of the pan.

5 Pour over the beaten egg, then gently swirl the pan to allow the egg to evenly coat the zucchini and spread slightly up the side of the pan. Cook without stirring for 2–3 minutes. Once the egg starts to look opaque at the bottom, sprinkle over the grated parmesan, then leave for another minute or so until the bottom is completely cooked, the top is set and the cheese has melted.

6 Using a spatula, gently ease the frittata onto a serving plate, cheese side up. Top with some freshly ground pepper and serve immediately.

Panna cotta al

pistacchio

Pistachio panna cotta

Serves 4

Pistachio cream is a staple of the Sicilian kitchen and is used in many breakfast pastries. It is similar to chocolate spread but is (unsurprisingly) green and tastes gloriously of pistachios. You can find jars of crema di pistachio in most supermarkets in Italy, or it’s widely available online. Mixing pistachio cream with panna cotta is an indulgent twist on a classic, bringing a nutty sweetness to the cream as well as acting as a second setting agent, meaning you need less gelatin. I serve these in cocktail glasses and never turn them out, mainly because their green colour doesn’t look as attractive domed on a plate as it does sitting in a glass topped with chopped pistachios or a few fresh raspberries.

INGREDIENTS

• Handful of unsalted pistachios, roughly chopped

• Handful of raspberries (optional) Panna Cotta

• 2 x 2 g (1/16 oz) gelatine leaves

• 400 ml (14 fl oz) double cream

• 30 g (1 oz) caster sugar

• 1 vanilla pod, split and seeds scraped

• 80 g (23/4 oz) pistachio cream

METHOD

1 To make the panna cotta, using scissors, cut the gelatine sheets into a small bowl and cover with cold water. Leave to soak for 15 minutes or as instructed on the packet.

2 Meanwhile, pour the cream into a medium saucepan and add the sugar, vanilla seeds and pod. Place over a medium heat and gently warm until it almost comes to the boil, then switch o immediately.

3 Squeeze any excess liquid out of the soaked gelatine and stir into the hot cream until it has completely dissolved. Remove the vanilla pod, then transfer to a large bowl and mix in the pistachio cream until smooth.

4 Divide the panna cotta evenly among four cocktail glasses, then chill in the fridge for at least three hours or, better still, overnight.

5 When you’re ready to serve, top each panna cotta with a teaspoon of roughly chopped pistachios and, if you like, a few raspberries.

6 Serve directly from the glass.

Il risotto di mamma Silvana Silvana’s sa ron

fish risotto with red mullet ragu

Serves 6

This is the signature dish at my friend Anita’s hotel on the island of Salina. Originally hailing from Milan, she and her parents decided to buy a run-down hotel in the place where they spent their summers. It has, of course, taken over their lives. Anita’s husband gave up his job in finance to become the hotel’s baker (his sourdough is legendary) and her mother, Silvana, is now the hotel chef. Dinner at the Principe is a wonderfully convivial affair, conducted on one long table under a pergola overlooking the Tyrrhenian, with the volcano of Stromboli gently bubbling in the distance. Each morning, Silvana writes that evening’s menu on a blackboard in the bar and residents can say whether they would like to join. If they do they are treated to a four-course feast, which regularly includes this delicious fish risotto topped with mullet ragu. If you can’t find red mullet then sea bass is a delicious and slightly more economical alternative. You can also use vegetable stock rather than fish stock, which I find really lets the saffron and the fish ragu sing.

INGREDIENTS

• 20 g (3/4 oz) raisins

• A pinch of sa ron

• 500 g (1 lb 2 oz) red mullet or sea bass fillets, skin and bones removed

• Sea salt

• 2 tablespoons olive oil

• 1/2 small white onion, finely chopped

• 30 g (1 oz) tomato paste

• 30 g (1 oz) flat-leaf parsley leaves or fennel fronds, very finely chopped

• 20 g (3/4 oz) pine nuts

Risotto

• 1 litre (34 fl oz) fish or vegetable stock

• 2 pinches of sa ron

• 80 ml (21/2 fl oz) olive oil

• 1 small white onion, finely chopped

• Sea salt

• 450 g (1 lb) arborio rice

• 150 ml (5 fl oz) white wine

METHOD

1 Place the raisins and sa ron in a small bowl and pour over enough cold water to just cover them. Leave to soak and plump up for a few minutes. Meanwhile, cut the fish fillets into 2cm (3/4 inch) chunks.

2 Season with salt and set aside in a bowl for 5 minutes. Heat the olive oil in a wide frying pan over a medium heat,

add the onion and a pinch of salt and cook until translucent. Add the tomato paste, raisins and sa ron, soaking water, and parsley or fennel.

3 Stir well, then reduce the heat to low and cook for about 5 minutes. Increase the heat to medium, add the fish and cook for 3–4 minutes, turning occasionally to make sure it cooks evenly. At the end, stir through the pine nuts. The fish will break up a bit, which will make it a little more ragu-like.

4 Set aside while you make the risotto. Combine the stock and sa ron in a saucepan over a medium heat until the sa ron dissolves. Remove from the heat as it comes to the boil. In a separate pan, bring 300 ml (10 fl oz) water to the boil, then switch o the heat.

5 Everyone needs a di erent quantity of liquid for risotto, depending on the kind of rice, the size of your pan and so on. This is just a back up – you may not need it.

6 Heat the olive oil in a wide, heavybased frying pan over a medium heat. Once it starts to sizzle, add the onion and a pinch of salt and cook, stirring occasionally, for 3–5 minutes until the onion is translucent. Add the rice and mix until it is well coated in the oil. Increase the heat to high and toast the rice, stirring often, to allow the starchy outer coating to soften and disintegrate; this should take 2–3 minutes.

7 Pour in the wine and stir until it has all been absorbed into the rice and the alcohol has evaporated. Add a ladleful of the hot stock, then stir until the rice has absorbed it all before adding another ladleful.

8 Repeat this process for 18–20 minutes until most of the liquid has been absorbed. (If you run out of stock, add the boiling water.) Try the rice: it should be cooked but still have a little bite without being chalky. Adjust the seasoning if necessary, depending on how salty your stock is.

9 Remove from the heat. Spoon the risotto onto individual plates and top with a ladleful of the ragu.

10 Sprinkle with a little chopped parsley or fennel fronds and serve immediately.

Feel good factor

Trisha Buller writes about how the hairdressing industry is becoming more environmentally friendly

Consumers are increasingly concerned with environmental issues. We have noticed this more so within the hair industry with regard to products that are applied to our hair and scalp.

Our skin is covered by a protective layer known as the ‘acid mantle’. This ‘stratum corneum layer’ protects our bodies from potential harm from bacteria etc potentially penetrating the skin.

The acid mantle is composed of sebum (a fatty acid), which is secreted by the sebaceous glands. This is mixed with lactic

and amino acid from sweat forming the skin’s natural pH, which should be slightly acidic between 4.5-5.5 on the pH scale.

Certain cleaning soaps and other products can have an adverse e ect on the acid mantle changing the skin’s natural pH, however this return rate can improve within a few hours.

With this in mind we are constantly researching products, and working towards using and recommending those that are not just hair and skin friendly, but of course environmental friendly too.

INNERJOI is a remarkably innovative product, with impressive results for hair, scalp and skin, and is environmentally friendly. It produces healthy clean hair

with its list of natural ingredients and provides an opportunity to reduce our collective environmental footprint.

INNERJOI o ers the joy of doing something that is good, something which is healthier for the environment and healthier hair. INNERJOIhas naturally-derived ingredients, with no silicones, parabens gluten, SLS/SLES sufates,Phthalates and mineral oil.

INNERJOI formulas use upcycled ingredients used from food production processes and 100% recyclable packaging. There are plenty of other benefits too:

FITNESS NOTES

SLEEP FIT

Q How does the Eight Sleep Pod technology work?

A The Pod is an intelligent sleep system that gives you up to 32% better sleep. It cools and warms on each side of the bed from 12°C to 43°C and works with any bed. Powered by the intelligence of Autopilot, as your body temperature changes overnight, the Pod heats and cools to match your body’s natural rhythm, keeping you in deep sleep for longer.

Q Why should fitness enthusiasts track their sleep?

A Since sleep is so important for physical performance, the first step is to assess sleep and recovery quality by tracking

your sleep. Eight Sleep has conducted research showing that people experience a significant improvement in their sleep and, therefore, cardiovascular health after using the Pod.

Q We all know that exercise can help improve sleep, but how can improved sleep help with physical fitness?

A A good night’s sleep can contribute greatly to fitness. After sleeping on the Pod for just one week, subjects with average to below-average resting heart rates (i.e. >70 bpm) had the largest decreases in sleeping HR after using the Pod. A 2 bpm magnitude of decrease in sleeping HR is similar to what you’d expect

to get from a 12+ week-long exercise programme in yoga, tai-chi, or strength training.

Q And finally, if you could share one sleep hack for fitness enthusiasts, what would it be?

A Consistency is the easiest sleep hack. Create a schedule and stick to it, even on weekends. Go to bed within 30 minutes of your desired bedtime every night. Also, make sure the room you sleep in at a consistent temperature throughout the year, a cooler room normally leads to a better night’s sleep.

RETURNS MANY HAPPY

As he celebrates five years on Berkhamsted High Street, Tobias Oliver discusses how his interiors company has evolved and what the future holds

Q When you launched Tobias Oliver Interiors (TOI) in 2016, what did you want to offer from day one?

A Seamless elegance with a hint of quirk! With every project we take on this is at the core of each design scheme. What separates us from the rest is that we have no ‘in-house’ design style. We draw upon our far-reaching knowledge of suppliers, craftsmen and artisans to produce luxury interiors that are totally unique and, more importantly, reflect the lifestyles of our clientele.

Q How do you look back on the first 2-3 years in business?

A Looking back on the initial years of my business, I view them as both challenging and incredibly rewarding. Those years were a steep learning curve where I dealt with everything from client acquisition and managing finances, to executing complex design projects under tight deadlines.

54 ABSOLUTELY magazines

Despite the hurdles, these years were crucial for establishing my reputation and refining my design approach. Every project and client interaction taught me something valuable about the practical aspects of running a design business and about my own creative capabilities. Overall, those early years laid a strong foundation for the sustainable growth and success of my business.

Q Why did you open a showroom on Berkhamsted High Street?

A I chose to open a showroom to create a tangible experience for my clients and to showcase the quality and diversity of my work. Having a physical space allows clients to touch and feel the materials, experience first-hand the level of quality and craftsmanship, and visualise their own spaces more effectively. It also serves as a platform for displaying a variety of design styles and solutions, helping clients to better understand their preferences and options. Additionally, the showroom acts as a creative lab where my team and I can experiment with new ideas, keeping our designs fresh and innovative.

Q Why Berkhamsted?

A I grew up in Berkhamsted and have always loved the area. I didn’t realise how fortunate I was to have been brought up here until I lived elsewhere and abroad, so it felt natural for me to return to my roots. Most of my family and friends all live locally and having Ashridge on our doorstep is perfect for walking Otto, my four-legged friend!

Q How has this changed how you work as a business?

A Opening the doors to the retail side of the business was exciting! Probably with the most ominous timing as after just six months we were all hit with Covid and Brexit, along with many other challenges. Ultimately, when life throws you lemons, you make lemonade! We put an enormous amount of effort into the e-commerce side of the business, onboarding luxury brands that synergised with us. Four years on we are now a leading luxury online retailer, which has meant we moved all our stock to a state of the art fulfilment centre and we are now a By Appointment Only showroom. We made this decision for us to re-align our main focus back to interior design, with our online retail shop working smoothly in the background.

Q Today, what would we find in the showroom?

A The showroom is now our private client meeting space, with upstairs now a dedicated design studio. We also hold events and offer the space to hire for third party private meetings in a luxury setting; if you are interested in hiring the space then please do get in touch.

“We want to leave a lasting impression in the minds of our clients”

Q What recent projects really showcase what TOI is all about?

A There are so many it’s difficult to choose. There is a particular one we are working on now that is very special, but it won’t be finished until later in the year, we can tell you more then. But two standout ones we completed last year both won national awards and are very different to each other in terms of design and that is exactly what TOI is all about. We work with our clients’ design aspirations and turn them into reality, ensuring the design is a true reflection of them.

We are working on a variety of projects in the local area as well as across London. They are all very different in terms of design briefs and types of clientele and we love the diversity it brings us.

Q How do you see the future evolving?

A There’s much in store for our brand. We have further developed the website for our online customers. Not only can they now purchase fabrics, trimmings and wallpaper; you now have the option to use these fabrics and trimmings to design and have your own bespoke cushions made. We are developing this functionality further to be able to make roman blinds and headboards using the many thousands of fabrics available through our website. In terms of the core part of our business, this mission will remain the same; to deliver luxury interiors, leaving a lasting impression in the minds of our clients, through exceptional service and sustainable means

Style by ST ALBANS

Interior
St Albans has evolved into a design hub for all things interiors

Tdesigner Jessica Schertle from @by bloom.studio on why St Albans is

the

destination for styling your home

he quaint cathedral city of St Albans with its Roman history and sumptuous Hertfordshire countryside has evolved into a design hub for all things interiors. I love strolling through the centre, brimming with design inspiration around every corner with a mix of well-known brands and charming independents.

Many buildings in the area were built in the Victorian era, which celebrates a style revival in 2024 with characteristics such as chevron flooring, wallpaper and large patterned fabrics. Head to The Radiator Centre for a must-have period cast iron radiator in an accent colour. For rich patterned wallpapers and ornate fabrics Chantilly Interiors have you covered. Visit The Bespoke Flooring Company on the picturesque George Street, where you will find warm, earthy tones including shades of brown, caramel and burnt orange, which are the biggest colour trend for floors this year along with primary-coloured accents. Pick up the latest colour charts and tester pots from Farrow & Ball or Fired Earth, which also stocks a variety of terracotta tiles that are celebrating a comeback too.

In terms of furniture, straight lines meet curves and style mix is a must. A fold of chairs, an eclectic little showroom on London Road, sells unique and skilfully restored finds from the 60s to the late 80s. Their upcycled mid-century icon chairs, lamps and sideboards will sit beautifully with a curved sofa from BoConcept a few doors down. Pop across the road and visit Marks & Tilt featuring a range of modern, contemporary artwork for that special curated look.

Family run antiques store LA James on George Street is a treasure chest for interesting trinkets and coloured glassware. To add to your collectables,

also explore Cositas, not only an independent jewel specialising in original decorative items, but also a pop-up shop for the local creative scene. I can never pass Oliver Bonas’ recently extended store without spotting stylish yet useful home accessories. The eclectic Zoohause at the top of St Peter’s Street is a well-stocked home store where you’ll find timeless ceramic vases, decorative textiles and elegant cookware in muted palettes to enhance your design scheme. Bring it all together by investing in a lasting rug from Rug Maker, who offer a fabulous choice of traditional and modern handmade rugs in beautiful designs.

For larger projects, a multitude of specialist showrooms such as TinkleTorium and C.P Hart for bathrooms, and MoneyHill Interiors and Tom Howley for kitchens, can be found within a 5-minute radius of the city centre. The abundance is remarkable; therefore St Albans is truly worth a visit to plan your renovations.

Long, lazy days

Make the most of summer with an awning from SWR Home & Outdoor

58 ABSOLUTELY magazines

Look out, here comes summer and if you’re searching for the perfect cost effective accessory for spending lazy summer days and hot summer nights out in your garden, then an awning is exactly what you need. Get ready to fully embrace the summer sun, by ordering your awning from SWR Home & Outdoor before the end of June and get FREE installation worth up to £600*.

There are two main types of awnings to consider: fixed patio awnings or freestanding options. Installing a patio awning will depend on the area available at the rear of your house, as this type needs fitting to a wall. There are a few other factors

to consider, but booking a free survey from SWR Home & Outdoor will answer any questions about practicality. If a patio awning is not suitable, then a freestanding awning is an alternative solution. This type is also super functional and offers you more flexibility regarding where it can be fitted, as it is totally independent of your home. Patio awnings are fully retractable, giving you complete control over how much cover you want at any given time, all at the touch of a button. Built for durability and designed to be extremely robust, once you have a patio awning installed, you’ll wonder how you ever survived without one! There are many colours to choose from, in stunning materials to enhance your patio and complement your existing doors and windows. If your garden is south facing, an awning is a must have accessory, as it will protect your curtains or carpets from fading and prevent your house from heating up uncomfortably throughout the summer.

Alternatively, a freestanding awning can be installed in an area of your garden that you’d love to utilise more. Perhaps you have the perfect place for al fresco dining, but want the option to protect yourself from occasional showers, preventing a mad dash for the house halfway through dinner! These beautifully constructed retractable awnings don’t need to be attached to a wall, instead they are fixed onto concrete foundations to ensure their stability and longevity.

Another good reason to install an outdoor canopy is if you own a hot tub. A product such as a louvered canopy would offer extra privacy enabling you to use

your tub all year round if required. These substantial and elegant structures come with cosy heating, stunning mood lighting and even have impressive audio options too. You can have full-length screens fitted on all sides for added protection and these and the louvered roof slats can then be operated easily by remote control.

If you’ve always fancied an outdoor kitchen, but don’t currently have a bespoke space to use it under, then fitting a freestanding awning will give you an undercover area to install one. A luxury Burnout kitchen from SWR Home & Outdoor can be built to include barbeque products from quality manufacturers such as Napolean, Big Green Egg or Flammkraft. These beautiful modular kitchens are created with the outdoors in mind and meticulously crafted in Germany. Each kitchen is tailor made to your requirements to include stunning countertops, outdoor sinks and grills and, of course, an easily accessible fridge. Choose from colours designed to perfectly coordinate with your outdoor space. Imagine cooking under the stars and sharing sumptuous meals with friends and family, all year round.

So why not get set for summer now, it’s coming whether you’re ready or not!

FWhy an Origin indoor pool can truly change your life

inding moments of relaxation amidst the chaos of daily life can seem like an impossible task. However, what if the key to achieving tranquillity and well-being could be part of your home or garden? Imagine stepping into a space where stress melts away and every moment is an opportunity for self-care or fun. Welcome to the world of indoor pools from Origin –the ultimate home improvement.

Origin's indoor pools are meticulously designed to offer more than just a place to swim; they are a haven for wellness and relaxation. Whether it's a serene morning swim to invigorate the senses or an evening dip to unwind after a long day, Origin provides a private retreat completely tailored to your wants and needs where you can escape the stresses of the outside world and focus on self-care.

One of the most significant advantages of an indoor pool is the year-round accessibility, regardless of weather conditions, this leads to consistency and creates a sense of routine making it easier to incorporate swimming into your daily life.

Beyond the physical benefits, swimming has a profound impact on mental well-being. The therapeutic properties of water have long been recognised for their ability to promote relaxation, reduce stress and improve mood. Immersing yourself in water creates a sense of weightlessness that eases tension in the body and calms the mind, providing a natural antidote to the pressures of modern life. Moreover, regular swimming has been linked to increased levels of endorphins – the body's natural mood enhancers – leaving you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

In addition to the restorative power of swimming, Origin's indoor pools offer a range of features designed to enhance and elevate your home life. From integrated spa amenities like saunas and steam rooms to customisable lighting and ambience controls, every aspect of the indoor pool experience is crafted with your comfort and relaxation in mind.

With their client-led approach, you can create your dream pool while Origin manages the whole process, from concept to completion. Their experts will discuss requirements, guide you through the options and produce a fully costed proposal and design based on your preferences, allowing you to undertake the ultimate home improvement and finally achieve the perfect work-life balance.

Say goodbye to stress and say hello to a sense of serenity – dive in and contact Origin today.

TIMELESS FEEL

From stunning designs to the latest must-have products, Tomas Kitchen Living is any home owner's dream designer

Tomas Kitchen Living are British kitchen and furniture makers with a strong design identity and superb quality. They have gorgeous showrooms in North London, St Albans and Cambridge, where everything is hand-built to order.

Since 2010 when the fi rst showroom appeared, the Tomas name has become synonymous with the ‘Classic Modern’ style. It’s an understated and timeless look, which could be described as ‘modern, yet not overly modern’.

The embodiment of this look is found in the long-standing ‘naturalSHEER’ model. Other styles include a refreshing take on classic shaker, art deco and a minimalist ultra-modern concept model called ‘minimalSHEER’.

To complement these wonderful kitchens, discover the CASE & TABLE COLLECTION – an extensive range of exceptionally beautiful free-standing furniture.

KITCHENS

The journey usually begins with a visit to the main Tomas Kitchen Living website, where a showroom visit can be arranged – all the Tomas showrooms are open by appointment only.

Each Tomas Kitchen is designed by brand founder Tomas Hinton, who tells us how much he enjoys the process of meeting new clients, working closely with them to create perfect layouts.

“Every space is a new challenge, a bit like a puzzle,” Tom explains. “When the optimum layout is achieved, it’s fantastic – like the man on the A-team used to say: I love it when a plan comes together!” Well, you can certainly see how that could be a really fun job.

After the creative process and specifications have been agreed, working drawings are issued and Tom passes the ball to the rest of the team who expertly turn each dream space into a wonderful reality. Consistently exceeding expectations there are literally hundreds of very happy Tomas Kitchen owners out there. Tom’s Danish wife Mette is the co-

owner and runs the day-to-day business. Tomas (who is English by the way) remarks that “it is through numerous family visits to Denmark that I tuned into the Danish Modern design ethos and applied it to our concept – that is to say quality materials, functionality and beautiful clean lines”.

Heston Howes runs the Production Centre at Cambridge, whilst Keith Waller heads up the top-notch installation service. Depending on the nature of the project, installations can be a complete re-working of an existing space or a ‘dryfit’ – which is typical when new spaces are being built.

KITCHEN MODELS

The handle-less SHEER kitchen model was fi rst designed by Tom in 2008. Over the years the concept has remained the same, yet the details have been refi ned and styling options have been added along the way.

Whatever the style, the tried and tested SHEER design really is lovely to live with and very comfortable to use. Behind the beautiful doors and panels, you’ll

be delighted to discover beautiful solid oak drawers and sturdy plywood cabinets. Tom goes on to say that “nearly everyone goes for one of the handleless SHEER styles, but when a handle is occasionally required, the characterful SCOOP model is a great option”.

The price-point is also worth a mention –as explained in the Price Guide (available on request), you may be ‘pleasantly surprised’, as these kitchens are deceptively inexpensive. Tom has always believed in providing value: “Genuine value along with sustainability, quality and design excellence are the founding cornerstones of the brand. Like all businesses, in the last few years we have been hit by numerous challenges and steep cost increases –however by staying with the appointment system (post covid) we are running a very lean business model and this enables us to continue making a superb quality product at a sensible price.”

When it comes to choosing appliances, sinks, taps and tops Tomas Kitchen Living have some great options: as main dealers for Miele, Siemens, Corian,

Caesarstone, they can usually come up with some great offers.

FREE-STANDING FURNITURE

The CASE & TABLE COLLECTION really is something special, to fi nd out more request a brochure (online or in print). These beautiful pieces can be deployed in all areas of the home and can be ordered with or without a full kitchen project.

DANISH FURNITURE & LIGHTING

Tomas Kitchen Living are also dealers for top-end Danish furniture and lighting brands such as Carl Hansen & Sons and Louis Poulsen. The iconic Erik Buck Stool is also something of speciality –these are imported directly from Denmark and can be ordered through a dedicated website and the showrooms.

In good HEALTH

Interior designer and creative director at Studio Anqet, Nada Elsaid, takes Absolutely behind the scenes of a unique outdoor project in Much Hadham

66 ABSOLUTELY magazines

The story of this design starts with a client eager to care for his family. Following Covid there were new parameters to the type of care individuals were providing for themselves as well as their families. It no longer simply included food and school runs; it expanded to include mindfulness and mental health at home. Our own wellbeing is being redefined and put to the test along with the core ethos of how biophilic design can contribute to it.

Coming from a family of swimmers, water was where it all started. Given that water is pivotal to our existence as human beings as well as to our planet, it felt natural to dive into how it can shape our landscape. The designers began to explore ideas of modern landscapes’ look and feel, asking questions like: what does such a garden and environment need? How can it enhance a person’s health physically and mentally? How can we marry water, man made structures, fire, and greenery with the existing contours so all can become one and in harmony with nature?

This design includes a swimming pool, BBQ and dining building, spa building with a sauna and much more. The focus was on how our physical

and mental wellbeing is pushing our own gardens and homes into becoming our sacred havens, our sanctuary from the world. When it comes to detoxing, a spa building was introduced dedicated for this purpose, which includes a relaxing foot massage area, a 2-level tiered sauna with the Himalayan salt wall and a comfortable shower room and changing facilities.

THE DESIGN PROCESS

The design brief allowed us some freedom and as a result we included additional features such as an outdoor shower, seating areas and an intimate sunken area with a fire pit.

The design considerations for this project required detailed coherence between the external landscape, internal habitable areas as well as wellconsidered lighting strategy for both. The lighting plays a huge role in providing a subtle emphasis and elegant focus on the different types of vegetation at night, whilst providing an ambient atmosphere for socialising during the hot summer nights. The architectural pillar lights create drama to the landscape and add a flare in the darkest of nights. In designing the BBQ building, it was critical to have it as open as possible to the landscape so it can blend into it as one. This was achieved by incorporating a fully openable and recessed glazing with removable corner pillars.

Including a wall water feature with bamboo inspired honed Quartz not only adds sounds of serenity to the intimate dining area of the BBQ building, it creates an intriguing interest as the wall only comes to life once water starts to flow. This water feature has one material, but the clever choice of finish changes how it reacts when touched by water, hence bringing it to life.

ABSOLUTELY magazines 67 HOME | FEATURE

The spa building represents a place of total relaxation. With a full width feature wall of striking black marble effect porcelain and delicate sanitary ware, this only begins the winding down journey at the end of a stressful day.

Designing a foot spa where our client can relax and detox following a long day was a pleasure for us. In Chinese culture, feet reflexology is one of the key therapies they use to directly treat bodily organs. This is of course accompanied by a sauna, shower room, hot tub, outdoor shower and changing facilities, so guests can have a full high end spa experience to complete their relaxation session.

The sauna is a pivotal room in this complex where our research led us to ensure Himalayan salt blocks and natural sustainably sourced cedar wood is used. This allowed us to deliver a space that not only enhances our client’s health and wellbeing, it also allows them to fully enjoy the relaxing aroma the cedar wood provides.

The heated outdoor hot tub contains different massagers strategically selected to deliver various targeted massing points for the neck, shoulders, upper back, lower back and calves.

WELLBEING AND MINDFULNESS: A KEY DRIVING FORCE

We started our journey by defining key health benefits this design needs to deliver: physical wellbeing; mental wellbeing; and social wellbeing (reconnecting to the world).

Physical wellbeing being the first and most obvious one: we capitalised on two pillars, the first is physical exercise and second is relaxing and detoxing. With regards to the physical pillar, this was achieved through laps in the 18m x 6m swimming pool, the planter in the pool is strategically positioned to allow a professional swimmer to comfortably do laps whilst bringing landscape into the water surface. When it comes to detoxing, we introduced the spa building dedicated for this purpose.

“Wellbeing in the home is being redefined”

When it comes to the mental side of our vision, we capitalised on promoting the physical wellbeing in addition to the introduction of additional sensory stimuli like the tranquil sound of trickling water over cobbled stones, the bubbling sounds of the hot tub along with the view of greenery and water surfaces, which all promote mental detoxification. This environment not only helps enhance the impact of meditation and full mindfulness, but it also provides fertile grounds for one to realign themselves on a cellular level.

On the social wellbeing front we wanted to create a fun hub for all the family members as well as their friends and guests, starting with the sunken seating with a fire pit for intimate gatherings followed by a building dedicated for BBQ cooking, dining, and entertainment. Oxford University research reveals that the more people eat with others the more likely they feel happy and satisfied with their lives, not to mention cooking with friends creates a bonding experience that’s mostly cherished and remembered by all.

Another aspect of the social connection was the integration of a hot tub and sauna big enough to accommodate 8-10 people. These areas create a safe and informal environment for friends and family to reconnect and unwind.

Fresh start

Breathe new life into your Hertfordshire home

Gone are the days of choosing between the charm of timber windows and the practicality of uPVC. Replacing your windows can breathe new life into your home, either by preserving its unique character or adding to it. Leading South East home improvement company SEH BAC understands the importance of both the character of a home and its performance when it comes to windows.

A TOUCH OF TIMELESS ELEGANCE

For those seeking to retain the classic charm of their home, flush sash and vertical sliding sash are two traditional, timeless window styles. Offering a clean and elegant aesthetic, flush sash windows sit perfectly flush with the external brickwork when closed, creating a seamless, contemporary look while retaining the traditional charm often associated with Georgian and Victorian properties.

Vertical sliding sash windows replicate the classic design of timber sash windows, featuring a vertical sliding mechanism,

and add a touch of period elegance while offering the flexibility of modern operation.

Using high-performance uPVC, the beauty of these traditional window styles lies not just in their aesthetics, but also in their ability to perform as a modern window should, with superior thermal efficiency, enhanced security with modern window locking mechanisms and exceptional weather resistance, so they won’t rot, warp, or crack, requiring minimal maintenance throughout its lifespan.

A STATEMENT TRANSFORMATION

SEH BAC’s recent installation on this beautiful South East detached property demonstrates perfectly how modern performance can seamlessly blend with traditional aesthetics. The homeowner loved the character of their home, but their existing windows were letting them down as they were both inefficient and lacking the charm they desired.

The front was completely transformed by the installation of 14 vertical sliding windows, offering the perfect balance between the timeless elegance of traditional timber sash windows and the

high-performance benefits of modern uPVC. For an extra touch of individuality, the windows were finished in a stunning Hazy Grey on both the inside and outside. Chrome furniture added a sleek, modern touch that perfectly complemented the classic design.

The project also demonstrates the versatility of vertical sliding sash windows. While they seamlessly complement the character of older properties with their period charm, the wide range of colour and finishing options allows them to add a unique touch to modern homes too.

RESPECTING TRADITION

If your Hertfordshire home resides in a conservation area, replacing windows comes with an added layer of complexity as you will have to maintain the original architectural style.

Residence 9 windows are meticulously designed to replicate the slim sightlines and deep profiles of traditional timber windows, with a range of heritage features including putty lines, sash horns, and astragal bars.

Crafted from high-performance uPVC, they offer all the benefits of modern materials while maintaining the aesthetic integrity of property in a conservation area. Residence 9 windows are available in a wide range of colours and finishes too, allowing you to perfectly match the existing style of your home.

While their attention to detail replicates the look and texture of real wood perfectly, they blend classic aesthetics with modern benefits ensuring your home remains comfortable and secure.

Freedom of choice

Getting to grips with flexi boarding and how to know if it is right for your child

Flexi boarding is a popular boarding option that allows children to spend some nights at school and some at home while still maintaining their family home life. The flexibility of boarding on an occasional basis provides numerous benefits for children because it o ers a balance between the structure and support of an enriching boarding school life and the comfort and familiarity of being at home. For parents, exploring the advantages of flexi boarding for children can be a useful exercise, especially when attempting to determine if it is the right choice for your child.

Flexi boarding o ers a range of benefits for children, both academically and personally. One of the key advantages is the opportunity for increased independence and self-reliance. By spending time away from home, children learn to manage their own routines, organise their belongings, and take responsibility for their own personal needs. This fosters the development of essential life skills, such as time management, decision-making, and problem-solving, which are crucial for their future success and growth as a young adult.

COLLABORATIVE LEARNING

Likewise, flexi boarding provides a carefully structured environment that promotes academic progress. In the right boarding environment, children will have access to dedicated study spaces, may be supported with supervised homework sessions, and additional academic support will also be available outside of regular school hours. This allows them to focus on their studies without distractions and receive

78 ABSOLUTELY magazines

guidance from teachers when needed. Flexi boarding also o ers a conducive atmosphere for collaborative learning, as students can engage in group study sessions and discussions with their peers. Building strong friendships with peers is another significant benefit of flexi boarding, as is the opportunity for children to participate in a wide range of co-curricular activities. Boarding schools like St Margaret’s often o er an extensive array of clubs, sports teams, and cultural programmes that are not always available in day schools. By staying overnight, children can fully immerse themselves in these activities, develop their talents, and explore new interests while still sharing their experiences with their families at home. This not only enhances their personal and social growth, but also provides a wellrounded education that goes far beyond the realms of traditional academic study.

“Building strong friendships with peers is a significant benefit of flexi boarding”

For families with busy schedules or parents who travel frequently, flexi-boarding can be a life saver. It provides a reliable and secure environment for children when their parents are unable to be at home. Boarding at school in a safe and secure environment ensures that children are well-cared for and have access to the best support and supervision. In many cases it can also alleviate the stress and guilt that parents may feel when juggling a raft of work commitments and family responsibilities.

DEVELOPING RELATIONSHIPS

The question is, should you consider flexi boarding for your child? Firstly, if your child expresses an interest in boarding but is not ready for full-time boarding, flexi boarding can be a great option. It gives children the chance to dip their toes into the water and to experience the benefits of boarding life while still retaining that all-important connection with their home and family. Additionally, if your child has a demanding academic or extra-curricular schedule, flexi boarding can provide the necessary support and structure to help them manage their commitments e ectively. Some children may find flexi-boarding helps them to develop more cohesive relationships with their peers.

To determine if flexi boarding is the right choice, it is essential to consider the child’s personality, preferences, and needs. Some children thrive in a structured and communal environment, while others may find it challenging to adapt to the routines and culture of boarding life. It is crucial to have open and honest conversations with your child about their feelings and expectations regarding flexi boarding. Visiting the school, talking to current flexi boarding students and their parents can also provide valuable insights into whether this option aligns with your child’s needs and aspirations. In summary, outside of the obvious academic and co-curricular benefits, flexi boarding provides a reliable care option for busy families. It is a flexible alternative to full-time boarding that allows children to experience the advantages of boarding school life. For parents, open communication is key to making the right choice for their child’s education and personal growth, as is seeking guidance from the school to help make an informed decision that works for all parties.

Students and staff from St Edmund’s College & Prep School, Ware, have raised nearly £13k to support Cancer Research UK. The money has been generated through a series of fundraising activities at the school’s annual ‘Charity Week’ event, which took place in March and included sponsored car washes and the popular ‘Soak the Teacher’ event.

This year, the school has so far raised a whopping £12,762.45 for cancer research, a cause which is close to the hearts of many at the school.

Every year, St Edmund’s Charity Week event consists of fun fundraising activities for students and staff to enjoy including competitive football and hockey matches, sponsored car washes, a talent show, sponsored head shaves, and other student-led activities such as bake and pizza sales. Independent day and boarding school, St Margaret’s, recently hosted the Hertfordshire Primary Cross Country Championships in association with HSAA (Hertfordshire Schools Athletics Association) at its 60-acre campus in Bushey. It is the first time the school has hosted the prestigious sporting event, which is the main primary school county race in the region, also acting as a trial race for top athletes to try out to represent the county at the national championships. The event, which saw 438 Year 5 and Year 6 pupils compete and finish the course, involved four races, all spanning one mile in length.

A total of 69 schools from across Hertfordshire took part in the races, including Aldenham School, Codicote, Beechwood Park, Berkhamsted Prep and many more. The circuit, which boasted a mixture of terrains including a challenging woodland element, made the course a real test of endurance for the runners.

why everyone is talking about…

E-bikes

Estarli co-founder, Oliver Francis

,

explains why the movement is so buoyant

Every single day I hear from a new customer about how their Estarli e-bike has changed their life. Usually it comes with the follow-up remark: “I just wish I’d got one sooner.” Perhaps this is down to a former perception that e-bikes used to be for old people. They used to be ugly. But a lot has changed. E-bikes are for all ages. They help get people fit. They help people return from injury. They also help people get around who want their journeys to be easier, cheaper, greener and more enjoyable. On top of that, lots of e-bikes are now pretty hard to distinguish from normal bikes and they are often lighter than your old manual bike. So with the obvious stu out of the way, how is Estarli helping fuel the movement?

PRICE

The cost of e-bikes can be a barrier. Our primary aim is to make quality yet a ordable products so our folders start at £1,500 and our E-cargo bike is £3,000. Some of the leading brands on the market have cargo bikes with very similar spec for double that price tag.

BRITISH

We are proudly certified by Made in Britain. We design and fully assemble our e-bikes in our Berkhamsted factory and our customer service and technical support team are on site to help. It is from here that we stock our 80 retail partners around the UK and we keep all spare parts on site.

STORYTELLING

We are a little di erent in how we market our products. We have organically built up a fan club of riders who proudly tell their stories to us in order to help grow the movement. Our customers have become our mouthpiece.

INNOVATION & ITERATION

We’re also a bit di erent in how we evolve. Rather than launching a new model annually, we constantly iterate our designs based on feedback. This means we are always free to change things for the better.

The e-bike landscape is evolving faster than ever and this is only good news for the public. The UK still lags behind Europe, but the uptake is on an exciting upward curve. We are proud to run one of very few e-bike factories in the UK and we welcome anyone in the county to give us a call or book in for a test ride.
