everal years have passed since I turned up to school, eager and ready for a new term – and yet September still feels like a fresh start. Summer is over and it’s time to get to grips with a new year. This feeling is helped along, in London at least, by the advent of fashion week. Eyes are out on stalks for new trends and hot, young designers; equally, eyes turn towards the design world to wow us with innovative ideas. Luckily, we have been granted an insight into one of the of the world’s most prestigious interiors events, designjunction. Discover what we found out from the founder about this year’s showcase on page 14. In terms of fashion, we caught up with handbag designer Sevda; born

Not content with all London has to offer in this most busy of months? Not to worry, our travel feature will transport you to a place of adventure and discovery in Kenya, all whilst maintaining a fabulous sheen of luxury on page 54. All the latest property news and listings for the local area begin on page 83, so if you’re seeking a change of place, look no further. I hope you enjoy the issue. Ciao! ◆

SHOW TALK

Absolutely meets Deborah Spencer, founder of designjunction, to discuss moving to King’s Cross, Scandinavian style and dyslexia Interview Pendle Harte

Q: designjunction is now six years old. How has it evolved over the years? A: From our very humble beginning back in

Geofleur

Chis_Sept16_designjunction.indd 14

2011 - when we presented just 30 brands in a basement venue in Central London - the show has grown to more than 200 worldrenowned contemporary design brands. This year, the show is going to be even bigger and better at our new location in King’s Cross. Over the course of six years we have built up a reputation for occupying some of the most challenging and ambitious spaces in central London from a 40,000 sqm disused sorting office to a derelict design school last year. Now we are taking over an entire site, with public realm outdoor spaces making it even more accessible. King’s Cross has undergone one of the largest urban redevelopment projects in the UK and is now one of the coolest and most connected destinations in London. It’s the ideal setting to take the show to the next level. If designjunction is at the cutting-edge of design, King’s Cross is at the cutting-edge of the future, encapsulating our core brand values and personality. For the first time, we will be building temporary outdoor structures at King’s Cross as well occupying existing indoor spaces. One of the most impressive sites is on Lewis Cubitt Square, where we plan

There will also be a secret garden champagne bar out the back to relax. designjunction also forms part of the King’s Cross Creative Quarter which brings together all the cultural institutions within the area alongside some of the finest eateries in London – Grain Store, The Lighterman, Vinoteca to name but a few.

to build a two-storey pavilion and have commissioned Satellite Architects to design a monumental façade in front of the structure. The façade will be 70m long by 7m high made up of 4,000 individual GRID cubes with reflective mirrored surfaces. Last year we occupied two sites in central London that allowed us to have a dedicated retail venue and a dedicated venue for trade. This year, designjunction will occupy four locations, creating a mini city with different social quarters for eating and drinking, entertainment, exhibitions, business and pleasure. There is also plenty of shopping from more than 60 boutique pop-up shops, not normally found on the high street.

Q: What are the highlights of this year’s event for you? A: One of the biggest highlights is the move to our new home. Rather than taking over an existing venue we will be occupying an entire site. Key highlights include the customdesigned red monopoly-style houses we are building on Granary Square. Ten of these houses will be filled with immersive design concepts. Under the Canopy area, visitors can experience some of the best shopping from fashion and jewellery to glassware, ceramics and books. One We Made Earlier will be

about art and design. My mind worked in a creative way due to my dyslexia. It allowed me to think more laterally. I loved anything to do with art. At school I would spend lunch time in the art workshop painting, making or drawing things. Weekends were spent going to art galleries. I then did a year at art school and a degree in history of art. I was also inspired by grandfather, who worked in both fashion and retail. The combination of commerce and design felt like a natural fit.

Q: What designers and styles do you admire? A: Scandinavian design is the style I

Tom Pigeon will be selling some of his graphic prints alongside stylish tech accessories from Native Union and leather bags from Holdall & Co. At Cubitt House, you will find some of the world’s leading design brands from Icons of Denmark, String, Design House Stockholm to Modus and Deadgood – all presenting new product launches. Independent designer Christopher Jenner will present a two-year collaboration with Sheffield-based heritage silverware brand Elkington & Co. The collection is really stunning. LSA International will be

gravitate towards the most. Great designers such as Arne Jacobsen, Han J Wegner, Verner Panton and brands such as Carl Hansen, String and Hay producing beautiful pieces for the home. Scandinavian design has an understated aesthetic. It’s also affordable, functional and made using natural materials and traditional craftsmanship. I am also a huge admirer of Jasper Morrison, it’s the simplicity of his work that I love. Very minimal.

Q: There’s a new focus this year on dyslexia in design. How did that arise and what is it? A: This is a subject matter very close to my heart. I grew up with dyslexia. At the time, I couldn’t understand why people at my school were miles ahead of me academically. I naturally gravitate towards the arts. It was a subject matter I was good at without any

restrictions on my creative ability. Dyslexia led me down the path of art and design. In some respects it has defined me as a person. When I was approached by Jim Rokos to host an exhibition on Dyslexic Design I immediately said yes. The exhibition, curated, organised and driven by Jim, aims to explore the connection between dyslexia and the creative industries. Looking at the positive effects as well as the challenges that people face working with a learning difference. The exhibition’s main goal is to remove the stigma of dyslexia and reveal it as a gift. It will look at how dyslexia affects a person’s lateral and visual thinking. Dyslexic Design will showcase the work of many designers and illustrators such as Sebastian Bergne and Kristjana S Williams who say dyslexia has enhanced rather than limited their creativity.

Q: You arranged a designer sample sale last year. Will that happen again? A: The event was the first multi brand product sample sale in London. It presented an opportunity for many of the brands who exhibit with us to sell off old stock, exdisplay items and discontinued lines. Yes we will definitely do it again. The plan is to host this event bi annually to allow brands to build up their stock again…..

Q: And finally - where do you live and is your house full of pieces from designjunction? A: I live in West London, Kensal Green.

Ommo designs

Q: How much work goes into organising designjunction? A: Honestly - a lot. This is partly because we take over ambitious venues in London. As you can imagine these spaces present all sorts of challenges. We have occupied a disused Tramshed, old sorting office, school and now an entire site. I can’t complain because it makes the show so exciting and interesting to work on each year. We never stand still. Each year has to be bigger and better than the previous year. I wish we had more than 12 months to work on it. I have an incredible team around me.

It encompasses all styles and techniques, a tradition that dates back to its inauguration. Ian Cryer, President of the ROI has said of the event, “With this exhibition, we seek to show the present-day beauty of Greenwich, as well as capturing its historical importance. As ever, we aim to achieve this using the many varied styles all of our artists paint in. Everyone agreed that M1 Fine Art was the perfect venue for the exhibition and we hope every visitor gets as much pleasure from viewing the works as we got from creating them.” Visitors and locals alike will be able to see Greenwich’s historical landmarks such as the Cutty Sark and the Royal Observatory in all their glory, set against the backdrop of modern structures like the O2 and the colourful markets. t’s always exciting to see the streets you walk down everyday, the parks you picnic in on weekends and the venues you make a pilgrimage to for events depicted by great artists. Luckily for Greenwich locals, this particular thrill is just around the corner. This September the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (aka the ROI) have turned their attention to the famous maritime borough with an exhibition entitled ‘The ROI Paints Greenwich’. Their chosen space? M1 Fine Art. Although the styles and choice of areas to portray will vary greatly, the exceptional standard of the work will be universal throughout the exhibition. Peter McAllister, Gallery Director, M1 Fine Art said, “It’s incredibly exciting that over the past six months, members of the most prestigious organisation pertaining to the production of oil paintings have been out in force on the

Their sole goal has been to capture the beauty and majesty of this, one of London’s most famed locations and from the 2 of September until the 2 of October, the works they have created during this time will be exhibited in the gallery. We’re thrilled that they have chosen to paint Greenwich and are very happy they chose us to exhibit them with.” Led by its president, Ian Cryer, The Royal Institute of Oil Painters, was founded in 1882, and was granted royal

ersonally, I have always loved a print with people in it. Figures of any kind on a summer dress are an immediate sell for me, though unfortunately they're quite rare. Flower prints, paisley, even birds, are everywhere. But it's not often that you find a blouse embellished with tiny surfers, ballerinas, tennis players or girls in bikinis. And this is neither a children's collection (as proven by the karma sutra print) nor is it too cute. French label G.Kero is sold internationally with a cult following and its cotton shirts and blouses, bomber jackets and sweatshirts come in prints that are unlike any others

we've seen. There's the Bowie tribute Spaceman shirt (look closely and it's covered in tiny Aladdin Sane figures) and the Michael Jackson one – but this is a world away from the low-rent fan shirt. These are grown-up pieces in sharp cuts and quality fabrics, with an extra dose of fun. We are fans, as are Kate Moss and Cara Delevingne. ◆ G.Kero is stocked at violalondon.com and at gkero.fr

HOMES & INTERIORS / PROFILE

In The Bag We catch up with the woman behind handbag brand Sevda London I n t e r v i e w C at h e r i n e h a l e s

CATHERINE HALES: What inspired you to start designing handbags? SEVDA LONDON: My defining career moment was realising my desire to make a high quality, as well as an ethically produced, handbag fulfilling every possible fantasy a women had in a bag. I only had one purpose in mind: to create an object that is rare, desirable, durable and everlasting.

CH: Where in the world inspires you?? SL: I couldn’t pick just one place! I am very much familiar with eastern culture as well as the west and women’s needs regarding their individual preferences and the way they express themselves. I feel more global than just belonging to one culture. It is reflected in my designs and makes it appealing to all women around the world, east and west.

CH: Where did you study? SL: I was encourged by my mother to pursue my dreams of becoming a designer so I studied fashion design at the Mimar Sinan Faculty of Fine Arts Textile and Fashion Design in Istanbul. I relocated to London to hone my craft and completed a variety of courses at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design.

CH: Why did you choose Canary Wharf as a base? SL: Both Mayfair and Canary Wharf are our base. While we have our sales meetings with high end buyers at the Mayfair office, we mostly welcome our private customers in Canary Wharf. Lots of our customers come from the city and we work with lots of people on private orders, so this has been an ideal base for us. We also really enjoy being in the buzz of Canary Wharf, the shopping and the wide open spaces. It is also a great place for style inspiration! ◆

CH: What is your design process? SL: I use my sketchbook! I am old-fashioned in my approach. Then it’s all about the

I had only ONE PURPOSE IN MIND: to create something RARE , DESIRABLE and DURABLE materials – I spend a lot of time handpicking and analysing each material. And of course London, one of the most beautiful cities in the world, stays at the heart of my creative ability and inspires me all the time.

sevdalondon.com

CH: How would you define your style? SL: SEVDA LONDON Handbags are ethical, timelessly classic, modern and chic. Our motto is: ‘Designed in London; Made in Italy.’ Sevda London specialises in identifying quality leather and ensuring a well-finished handbag that makes a woman stand out. I want each woman to feel as if each handbag was made just for her. CH: Who else do you admire? SL: For me there is only one lady who epitomises style, longevity and elegance, all the things that Sevda London aspires to encompass, and that is Coco Chanel.

S

ince making a facial part of my monthly beauty routine I’ve come to discover there are two types: the holistic and the medical. While one will send you to sleep with soothing music and massage, the other is an intense but skin-altering treatment. While Kate Kerr’s clinic is based in the super luxe Mondrian London, she definitely specialises in the latter. Having worked alongside some of the UK’s leading dermatologists, Kate is a fount of knowledge so our session begins with an in depth skincare analysis and discussion. This is when Kate shocks me – she tells me to never use moisturiser ever again. The skin, she explains, can hydrate itself by drawing moisturiser in from the air and up through the body. When you apply a cream or oil, the lower epidermis is tricked into thinking it’s producing enough so slows down meaning the lower layers become dehydrated and your skin, congested. Instead of my cream, I’m told to switch to two products with active moisturising properties; SkinCeuticals’ serum 10 and NIOD’s multi-molecular hyaluronic acid. The treatment that followed this lesson in skincare included a cleansing, exfoliation and mask as well as an extremely thorough extraction before spending 30 minutes underneath an LED light to heal and cleanse the skin of bacteria. I left Kate wiser but definitely looking younger. ◆ ● MONDRIAN LONDON 20 Upper Ground, SE1; katekerrlondon.co.uk

Alexander Vreeland introduces us to the new fragrances inspired by his extraordinary grandmother’s legacy W o r d s L aw r e n c e R o u l l i e r W h i t e

A

s Tuesday mornings go they do do not come much more surreal. On this particular one I found myself sitting in a corner of Cecconi’s in Mayfair. On a table across from me a very polite, and very measured, Gordon Ramsay (on crutches) was having a business meeting. Whilst opposite me sat the grandson of one of my greatest heroes of all time. In her 26 years as Fashion Editor of Harper’s Bazaar and nine years as Editor-in-Chief of American Vogue, Diana Vreeland left behind a mesmerising body of work and a reputation for transforming everything she touched. ‘Mrs. Vreeland did what?” I exclaimed, choking on my coffee. ‘My grandmother regularly injected her sofas with perfume using a hypodermic syringe.’ Came the reply, and with it a surreal mental image. Alexander Vreeland elaborated on this obsession with scent. As a child arriving at her apartment, incense would be burning in bowls throughout, scented candles would be shimmering against mirrors – she only burned Cypres by Rigaud - and sinking into a seat would be an olfactory experience of the most unexpected nature. Suddenly the perfectly conceived bottles in front of me on the crisp white linen made complete sense. Alexander Vreeland had wanted to capture his grandmother’s passion for perfume and share it with the world. The fragrances needed to be more than just remarkable – which they are by the way – they needed to allude to a woman whose life’s mission, a life lead to the full and never in half doses, was to seek out the

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

DUL_Aug16_Perfume.indd 42

FRAGRANCES fill the SENSES with the MYSTERIOUS Diana Vreeland

beautiful and the extraordinary and to allow others to become aware. Not wanting the Diana Vreeland Collection to be an heirloom brand, Alexander imagined his grandmother as a woman of thirty today. The resulting scents

are sophisticated and characterful. I fell in love with them immediately, and I smell a lot of scents. In its über elegant topaz bottle with orange silk tassel; Extravagance Russe possibly remembers the last Tsarina’s love of fossilised amber. In this scent, warm, regally rich resins are cloaked in vanilla bourbon with a dash of sensual musk. Diana Vreeland had a love of sandalwood, she wore the Indian essential oil liberally, and Absolutely Vital is an homage to this lifelong love affair. Indian sandalwood is sprinkled with luxurious Turkish rose and heady Egyptian jasmine absolute. Inspired by Mrs. Vreeland’s quote, “If it isn’t a passion, it isn’t burning, it isn’t on fire, you haven’t lived!” Perfectly Marvelous takes a red sandalwood pimento accord, laces it with jasmine and rounds it off with cashmeran; a musk that evokes that very notion of a fiery zest for life. In a punchy pink bottle, Outrageously Vibrant lives up to its name, it is a rich rendition of earthy patchouli and a sophisticated rose that is contrasted impeccably with the exuberant facets of crème de cassis. Simply Devine is a meditation on the tuberose flower, rendered even more beautiful with fresh notes of crushed leaves, a touch of nutmeg and a heart of delicate orange flower and jasmine. Daringly Different balances the complex floral chic of iris with the magnetism of rare oud. The scent opens with crisp accents of violet before developing into a heart of iris and lily. The deep smoky facets of the oud accord are complemented with addictive nuances of Turkish rose, tonka and leather. All these (and many more) are out now. Scents fit for a style legend! The Diana Vreeland collection is £135 for 50 mls from Selfridges. 

OYSTERS

ry Muscat from the Loire Valley has a bit of retro cool cachet attached to it these days but make no mistake it’s an absolute winner with salty oysters, and especially this one, which has more grassy freshness and apple fruitiness than than your average bottle. ● F&M Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie 2014, £9.90 Fortnum & Mason

SLOW ROAST PORK

rohibition Wines It’s tempting to choose red here but with the roast potatoes, crackling and apple sauce too then a tangy white actually works best. This is a delicious and great value South African option with lemon zestiness to cut through the richness but enough toasty depth to match the big flavours on the plate. ● The Tea Leaf Chenin Blanc 2014 £12.70

he caramel is just as – if not more – important than the apple when it comes to pairing this dessert with wine, and this Australian classic sweet wine has all the perfect attributes to make the tart sing, thanks to its luscious caramelised nut flavours, which glides so smoothly across the palate. ● Campbell’s Rutherglen Muscat £12.49 Waitrose

THE FIRST CUT Carve

A trendy carvery is not something we ever thought would be writing about – and yet here we are. One of Carve’s main dishes will be the “carvepot”, pots of freshly carved fish, meat or vegetables, mixed with spices, rice, relishes and roots. Lets hope they also carve themselves out a niche. 116 – 120 Tooley Street, SE1 carvecity.co.uk

FOOD & DRINK / RESTAURANT REVIEW

the crispy pork bao buns are heavenly

Pho Street

Delicious Vietnamese food in a contemporary setting in Greenwich

came next had a lot to live up to; luckily that's when the lemongrass lamb chops arrived. Tender, flavoursome and gone too soon, these were followed by some of the best chicken wings I’ve had in a while – not what I was expecting from a Vietnamese restaurant. My pho bo with rare beef (the dish for which the restaurant is named) is huge and is the epitome of scrumptious comfort food. Besides the great food, the service is wonderful and welcoming and the atmosphere is lively and positive. We leave clutching our mango bubble teas, full, contented and planning our return. u

T

he ever-growing popularity of Vietnamese street food is not a mystery; who doesn’t love giant bowls of noodles, swimming in fragrant broth and fluffy steamed buns crammed with tasty chicken or pork? If all this sounds appealing, you simply must head down to Pho Street in Greenwich. A stone’s throw from the Cutty Sark for Maritime Greenwich station, the walk is nonetheless scenic, past the eponymous, eternally docked ship and along the wall of the Old Royal Naval College. The matte black façade of the restaurant is easy to spy and my friend and I are soon tucked away at a table in the back. It is laid out with a hot counter on your right as you walk in, full of tempting morsels.

There is also a bubble tea counter with colourful concoctions in take-out cups for those just popping in. The decor is clean cut and contemporary, with exposed brick walls, white tiles and pale wood creating an airy atmosphere. My friend and I sit and study the menu for a good ten minutes, not wanting to miss out on any delicioussounding dishes. The menu itself is split into sections: rice dishes, bun noodle salads, banh mi baguettes or bao buns, pho noodle soups and, finally, sides. Following on from our philosophy of not missing out, we pick something from every section. We begin with two crispy pork bao buns. These are heavenly; tangy pork (with crackling) accompanied by crunchy cucumber, fresh coriander and chili, sprinkled with cashews and encased in a fluffy bun that is lighter than air. Whatever

INTO THE WILD We take the trip of a lifetime to find the real king of the jungle W o r d s R o m y va n d e n B r o e k e

W

hen I was five years old, I remember my Dad returning from one of his long haul trips to Los Angeles. Usually, he’d bring back edible presents – Lifesaver sweets and Hershey’s Kisses – but this one particular time he brought us back something else. Out of his small cabin bag came a rectangular box, a VHS, and on the front was a cartoon lion, surrounded by a pack of other wild animals – a wildebeest, a meercat and a mandrill – all standing proud on a large rock. It wasn’t long before the video was thrust into the player and my brother and I were hooked on The Lion King. Ever since that morning, when we delved into Disney’s representation of the African wild, we have both dreamt of going there ourselves to experience the natural world at, well, its most natural. Our mutual desire to visit the land of lions has never ceased. So after 12 years of discussing, and one and a half years of planning, we were on our way to Nairobi for the trip of a lifetime. The flight with Kenya Airways was a breeze, and before we knew it we were ushered out of Nairobi Airport and packed onto a single engine Safarilink plane and on our way to our first port of call in northern Kenya.

If you’re feeling brave,

THE TEAM AT SEGERA will happily set YOU UP A BED OUTSIDE SEGERA RETREAT

O

ur first stop was Segera Retreat, just north of the equator, on the Laikipia Plateau. This part of Kenya is an important migratory corridor within the Ewaso ecosystem – to put it simply, it is buzzing with life. The resort, which sits in the shadow of Mount Kenya, is a lush nirvana in the middle of wild grassland. Made up of a ring of luxurious stilt villas and an oasis-style private pool, each villa runs on solar energy and has a private balcony facing the bush and an al fresco Jacuzzi, which is ideal for a postsafari soak. While you’re there, you will also catch a glimpse of some of the park’s wildlife drinking at one of the watering holes nearby. If you’re feeling particularly brave, the team at Segera will happily set you up a bed outside, so you can star-gaze until you drift off. Before the land was acquired by Jochn Zeitz in 2005 it was overrun with

TRAVEL / WANDERLUST

poachers. But an eight-year conservation project transformed it into a reserve committed to protecting and cultivating the land and its animals. Alongside this, Zeitz invested time and money on initiatives to help preserve the wildlife and improve the lives of indigenous people. Safari is a bit of a tourist trap. Finding oneself alone with a lion or a rhino is, unfortunately, unlikely. In fact, people warned us to expect a flurry of 4x4s jumping dunes to get a glimpse of anything moving on the savanna. But clearly these people didn’t visit Segera. Our experience here was one of solitude and discovery. The resort has only eight villas, which means it is never overrun. Secondly, it’s the only resort in the 50,000 acres of wilderness, which means a fleet of noisy Jeeps just isn’t a concern. Our game drives tended to be in the evening – a 5.30pm departure, when the temperature dropped – with the hope of us spotting something during three-hour trips. We saw plenty: lions (only a few, mind), elephants, giraffe, zebra, antelope, buffalo and even a hippo bathing at the watering hole by my room. While the wildlife is certainly the draw here, there’s plenty more to enjoy. The food, for example. The staff at Segera will do everything in their power to ensure you are happy and well-fed, and are more than happy to take requests. If

Segera lays on a surprise Out of Africa style picnic in the bush

TRAVEL / WANDERLUST plenty of other safari dwellers, so it’s less intimate than the Segera safari. But the wildlife is abundant: male lions laze under the shade of a tree, lionesses sit in packs across the savanna, the distinctive Masai giraffes run alongside your car, elephants wander across the bush in their hordes, and Black rhino can be found. This prehistoric beast has inhabited the world for some 60 million years and, after years of poaching, is now an endangered species. It is believed there are only 2,500 left in pockets of Zimbabwe, South Africa, Kenya, Namibia and Tanzania. And it

you’re craving pancakes and maple syrup for breakfast, you can have them. Or is chicken curry and daal your favourite? Just ask. Most evenings we left it up to the kitchen to surprise us, but on request we persuaded the chef to cook us up an authentic Kenyan feast including staple dishes such as ugali (a starchy porridgelike substance), meat stews, sukuma wiki (collard greens cooked with onions and tomatoes), chapattis and a coconut kidney bean soup better known as maharagwe. One day we were whisked off to a prime ‘lion viewing’ spot in the bush, where we were surprised by an al fresco picnic that could’ve been plucked right out of the set of Out of Africa. Everything about Segera is on point; they combine luxury with rustic charm, provide a 24-hour concierge service, unlimited game drives, your own driver and allocated waiter, and a type of hospitality you’d expect to find at a friend’s home. To top our stay at Segera off, as we were leaving the resort, our driver David suddenly stopped the car, pointed quietly, and whispered, “Chui”. We glanced in the direction of his finger, and to our amazement there was a Chui (Swahili for leopard) standing by a fence, looking at us. Within seconds it turned away and raced off. But that didn’t matter, we had seen it, and it was wonderful.

ANGAMA MARA

J

etting from northern to southern Kenya, we saw an extraordinary change in landscape and animals. From the seared grasslands in Laikipia Plateau to the verdant planes of the Masai Mara, we were onto the next chapter of our African adventure. As the plane glided into land, we spotted a clan of hyenas near the runway, countless

harems of zebra, towers of giraffes and herds of elephant grazing nearby amidst the trees. Life was everywhere. Which meant we were in for a lot of lion sightings. Wilson, our friendly, talkative driver, picked us up and whisked us off to the camp. Comprised of 30 luxury tents, split in half across two camps and overlooking the vast Masai Mara, the camp is on the Oloololo escarpment, on the edge of the Rift Valley. The main restaurant/ reception is an open wooden decked space, adorned with Moschino-style rocking chairs and an unrivalled vista that redefines the phrase ‘beautiful view’. The food is good, but the best dinner was had under a canopy of trees, lit with lanterns, where they cooked up a feast of meat and delicious salads. Unlike Segera, Angama is more about a shared experience. There are communal dining areas where you can socialise with other guests or chat over a bonfire and a cocktail. The drives are different too – there are park fees, and

57 B&C_September_Kenya.indd 57

was the final animal, the one to complete our sighting of the Big Five, and the one we thought least likely to see. But as if by magic, to complete the trip of a lifetime, as we were on our final game drive, there it was, a black rhino with her baby plodding across the bush. And to top it off, not one 4x4 (other than ours) in sight. It was the most spectacular end to the most incredible trip, and has given me my very own story to treasure for the rest of my life. u  Economy return flights from London Heathrow to Nairobi with Kenya Airways (www.kenya-airways.com / 020 8283 1818) start from £722.45 including taxes. TRAVEL / UK GETAWAY THE SUITE

T

he suites are set back in the untouched woodland, large cabins offering a decked veranda for BBQ’s and dinner parties. They are idyllic and secluded, surrounded by the natural landscape of the site. We are led through the woods to our home for the weekend, the Amy Johnson Suite. Inside, the decor has a rustic luxe feel with a touch of elegance and class; designed with a nod to Amy Johnson, a local girl and a heroic pilot who was lost on a dangerous wartime mission. Renowned for her romantic charm and elegance, the suite embodies her unique personal style and her “rough glamour”. It’s complete with all the comforts you could ask for – a free-standing bath, a four-poster bed with wooden beams, camp-style bunkbeds, a well-equipped kitchen, and best of all, a tranquil veranda set within the trees. The suite is very well considered, combining local history, sophistication and convenience.

THE SITE

isit The Star at Sancton for “Everything that’s great about Yorkshire, under one roof.” A traditional village pub serving hearty bar meals. And to celebrate everything the village has to offer, the menu sources local produce from the area’s allotments and the pub’s own vegetable garden. Sancton is just a short walk from the site, but if you fancy jumping in the car to explore the East Riding of Yorkshire, head to Beverley, a traditional market town where you can admire the minster and browse the boutique shops. The stunning chalk cliffs of Flamborough Head are just 30 minutes away, and the walled city of York is 45 minutes in the other direction.

A

woodland retreat might be about enjoying your own space in the comfort of your suite, but you might also want to check out The Woodshed – an enchanting communal space where you can cosy up by the fire, unwind with a hot drink and homemade cake, or host a dinner party. Outside you’ll find a canopied campfire – a place for stargazing and toasting marshmallows. Whether you’re visiting in the summer or in the deepest winter, this is the perfect spot for an evening under the stars. You might even catch a glimpse of the North Star.

THE DAMAGE Three night weekends in the Woodland Suites start at £625 in low season, rising to £925 in high season. There are eight suites to choose from, each benefiting from a sitting room, double sofa bed, large bedroom with wood burner, second bedroom with bunk bed and a spacious bathroom.

HOMES & INTERIORS / DESIGN WEEK

Gone to Pot

From 22 - 25 September, as part of London Design Week, The Geffrye Museum opens its doors to fifty of the UK’s best potters Wo r d s s e r e n a s c a l z o

ooking for your next pottery purchase? Then look no further than Ceramics in the City. Held at the beautiful Geffrye Museum in Hoxton, this annual ceramics celebration brings together the works of an astonishing 50 potters from around the UK for a selling fair like no other. Exhibitors will include leading potters like Karen Bunting and Ben Davies but will also be introducing the rising talents of Myer Halliday, Kenyon-Wade and many more.

DELICATE PORCELAIN

will be shown alongside earthy STONEWARE

Contrast and variety will be highlighted throughout. Delicate porcelain will be shown alongside earthy stoneware and cool white glazes will oppose the colourfully painted vases and pots. The objects themselves will vary in price and purpose with smaller pieces and classic home-ware starting from £10 and larger, one-off ornamental pieces selling for several hundred. As well as the exhibits, which attract potters, collectors and design enthusiasts from across the country, there will be a selection of free demonstrations over the three days. Moyra Stewart, Yuta Segawa and Carlo Briscoe will each have 45 minutes

to demonstrate how they go about producing some of their wonderful designs. To entertain the younger visitors, Ceramics in the City will be holding free ceramics-inspired creative workshops for children that will take place over the weekend. These will involve taking inspiration from the exhibits to deisgn their own cermaic hanging ornaments and badges. Visitors will also get the chance to explore the wonders of the Geffrye Museum itself, which explores how people lived at home from the 1600s to the present day. Their 18th-century restored almshouses are full of evocative displays of home-life through the centuries, reflecting changes in society, behaviour, style and taste. The main fair will run from Friday 23rd to Sunday 25th September but will launch with a special open evening on the Thursday. Open to all, the launch evening will give visitors a chance to preview the event and get a head start on their wish-lists. geffrye-museum.org.uk

reparing children for the importance of small print is the hidden agenda of Simon Philip’s marvellously silly story. Pity the little boy in the tale everhopeful of gaining access to his friend Nigel’s party but faced with the doorman’s ever more preposterous rules and regulations. Having procured a monkey in a hat, it seems monkeys only make it over the threshold if sporting a monocle: and that’s just the beginning! There’s fun on every page as the boy’s entourage grows larger and ever more bizarre: the troupe of rabbits in tutus is my particular favourite.

evenoaks (founded 1432) is a co-educational day and boarding school for students aged 11 to 18. Just half an hour from London and Gatwick Airport, our superb 100acre campus is in the Kent countryside. Sevenoaks is known for its global outlook and forward-thinking ethos. With over 1000 pupils, the student body is lively, cosmopolitan and open-minded. Boarding is an important element in the school’s daily life and ethos, while our 600-year history, location and 700 day students ensure that the school remains firmly grounded in the local community. Academic excellence is delivered by a broad, balanced programme of study and exciting teaching. As one

of the first public schools to adopt the International Baccalaureate (IB), embrace internationalism, teach technology and introduce public service to the curriculum, we have never shied away from curriculum innovation. Sevenoaks has offered the IB since 1978 and is a flagship school for the Diploma, with our students’ average score consistently ten points above the world average. The IB

encourages inquiry, reflection and delight in learning, qualities we also encourage in our Middle School curriculum, which elicits a strong sense of personal engagement from students and places emphasis on the notion of learning independently. Our students go on to study at leading institutions worldwide, including 15-20 per cent opting for Oxbridge and a similar number for leading US universities. Sevenoaks offers a unique education which instils a love of learning that will outlive exam results. Students leave us with a modern and international worldview and a desire to shape and to improve the world. Sevenoaks School High Street, Sevenoaks, TN13 1HU, 01732 455133 sevenoaksschool.org

SCHOOL ETHOS: We pride ourselves on educating our students and not just examining them. Teaching and learning are something that we do with our students, not to them or for them. Every lesson becomes a dialogue as we seek to balance study skills, exam skills and life skills. We prepare them Enrichment is not treated as an 'add-on' for what the future holds: by setting high expectations, providing a strong academic framework, instilling confidence and supporting every girl’s emotional development so that she gains our own three R’s: resilience, resourcefulness and responsibility – attributes that are vital to deal confidently with our ever-changing world. EXIT SCHOOLS: The majority of Year 6 pupils go up to the Senior School; others go to local independent or maintained schools and a few to boarding school. EXTRA CURRICULAR: Enrichment is not treated as an ‘add-on’ to academic study; it is embedded in school life. Whether it is clubs and activities at lunchtime or after school, off-timetable events for a day, in-school workshops or trips abroad – all are designed to stretch, challenge, provide new experiences and build life skills.

OUR USPS: • Our size: the school is large enough to offer choice and flexibility but compact enough to ensure that no student is overlooked and small class sizes mean more individual attention for students and a strong focus on their studies with plenty of support and encouragement. • Being part of the Girls’ Day School Trust: Students have opportunities to interact with their peers from 24 sister schools and 2 academies in events and competitions, as well as accessing additional educational or training resources and a vast alumnae network.

Saturday 17th September | 9.00am

• The positive relationship between teachers and students is something everyone notices when they visit the school

www.dulwichpreplondon.org registrar @dulwichpreplondon.org

• Our approach to Student Development: Alongside a full PSHEE programme, we use a vertical tutoring system, based around four Houses, to help ensure everyone connects with their peers across the school. Students regularly band together across the school with ingenious activities to raise money for charity.

CYCLE LANES London’s new homes move up a gear

I

f you drive to work in London then you are part of a disappearing breed, according to Transport for London (TfL), which says that by 2018 the number of Londoners cycling to work will outnumber those in cars. But if you are a London commuter, are you surprised? Anyone who travels to work by public transport will rant with barely-veiled anger about the high costs and the sardine-like experience you get in return. Cycling has downsides too, including the dangers of being among traffic. Recent figures from the Department of Transport reveal you’re 17 times more likely to be killed on a bike. But cycling is getting safer. A network of Cycle Superhighways is now in place, many of which separate cyclists from cars. Nine have been finished, with more on the plans

SPACE FOR BIKES

The switch from cars to bikes is having an influence on the capital’s housing. It is now rare to find developments that offer a car parking space, and builders are attempting to attract two-wheeled buyers instead. “Developers in London are taking this rise in the popularity of cycling on board,” says Guy Meacock, of London buying agency Prime Purchase. A recent example is 250 City Road, designed by Norman Foster and being built by Berkeley Homes. When completed the

Even the home of football is twowheeled. Properties for sale and rent at Wembley Park Apartments have secure bike storage in the basements (020 3151 8601).

A network of Cycle Superhighways is now in place twin-towered development will feature 1,486 bike parking spaces for its 930 apartments Ω but feature just 200 car parking spaces. Pedal powered residents will also get to use a bike lift between ground level and the basement, where there will be a cycle workshop too. Quebec Quarter in Canada Water is due for completion this autumn, and has taken a different tack. It’s developer, L&Q, has realised more serious cyclists want secure storage for their high-value road bikes. Consequently, its apartments come with storage cupboards specifically designed to hold a bike. “Potential buyers have commented that they rarely see cycle storage in a newbuild home as generous at those found at the Quebec Quarter development,” says Mo Clarke of L&Q.

NEAR A SUPERHIGHWAY

The network of cycle superhighways means that other public transport options are no longer the ‘must have’. A good example of this is St Agnes Place, a development overlooking Kennington Park. It might be near two Northern Line stations, but rushhour carriages on that line are often ramjammed. Instead, the development is next to Cycle Superhighway Seven which runs from Colliers Wood to near Bank station.

CHAIN REACTION

But what happens when you get to work with your bike? Many cyclists say it is hard to find parking spaces inside or outside their offices, and that too often they return to find them gone; last year some 70,000 bikes were stolen in the capital, according to The London Cycling Campaign. To try and tackle this, the number of bike spaces required for a new office was doubled last year. So perhaps London looks set to become a cycling city. 

NEW BUILD

What have you learnt recently about the local market? I have learnt just how resilient, popular and fast paced the Greenwich lettings market is. The recent Brexit outcome has resulted in the lettings market experiencing an increase in activity, particularly from young professionals and families who were set to buy. We are seeing an increased demand for high end properties as people decide to treat themselves to a luxurious rental for the short-term, and keep an eye on the sales market for the opportune moment to buy. As a result, the higher end of the market is performing well at the moment. u

Q&A HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THIS AREA?

I’ve a long association with Bromley and Chislehurst. I originally worked in the area for fourteen years, then enjoyed a five year stint in London before returning to Bromley in January 2015. It’s exciting to have seen the huge redevelopment of the area complementing the good quality schools, lovely green spaces and great local amenities.

Stephen Whyte MANAGER Cluttons, Blackheath and Greenwich

REBECCA NOONAN

M

y love affair with Blackheath started when I was playing for Blackheath Rugby Club from around the age of 20 to 22. I managed to keep this up while studying at the University of Southampton doing the commute every weekend. I thoroughly enjoyed being part of the club and am still in touch with a lot of my former team-mates, many of who still live in the local area. My career in property started as soon as I finished university. I moved to Limerick in Ireland to join my extended family and whilst I was there Old Crescent RFC, the rugby club I was playing for, found me a job as a trainee negotiator with one of their sponsors. This was an exciting time on the emerald isle as the Celtic Tiger economy was in full swing. Everything in the property industry was very fast paced and I loved it. Within six months I was managing a new office. It wasn’t until 2007 when my wife and I decided to move back to the UK. The opportunity to work for Cluttons managing their

Being involved with the local community is essential to us here at Cluttons

Blackheath and Greenwich office came up just over two years ago and I jumped at the opportunity. I had always been a fan of the area and it gave me the challenge of starting up a new office. I was confident that the Cluttons brand coupled with our links into central London would work for the Blackheath and Greenwich residents and we appear to have been fairly well received so far. We have worked for some lovely people and have helped to sell some fantastic properties. We are still very much the newcomers in the area but the results generated have been very satisfying. Being involved with the local community is essential to us here at Cluttons. We hold a Duck Hunt on the heath every year. This fantastic event brings in around

300 participants from around the local area and those visiting from further afield. It is completely free and the perfect way to entertain the kids and the parents too. This year it is held on the 17 September, so please do pop by the office for an ice cream and the chance to take part. Blackheath and Greenwich is a fantastic community and is a great place to work. It is nice to see clients on an almost daily basis around the village but also to be dealing with a highly diverse register of property, ranging currently from one bedroom apartments up to a castle overlooking Greenwich Park and the City skyline. The area has a wonderful relaxed feel with great restaurants and pubs together with the fantastic transport links into the City, Canary Wharf and the West End. It is also not such a bad journey from my home in Tonbridge, depending on the traffic. It has now come full circle as I still support the Blackheath Rugby Club, but through sponsorship with Cluttons rather than anything physical! u

or decades our city has been hailed as one of the greenest in the world. And that’s not surprising; it’s got eight million trees, 30,000 allotments, three million gardens and 3,000 parks and commons covering 47% of its surface area. And if Joanna Lumley gets her way, a garden bridge too. But green spaces have a monetary value for homeowners as well as a pleasing look. Research has shown that apartments near to parks are 8% more valuable than those that aren’t. And as London’s overcrowding problems have increased, we’ve all come to treasure our local parks. Here are some of the best.

RAVENSCOURT PARK, HAMMERSMITH, W12

CRANE PARK, RICHMOND, TW2

Average property prices nearby: £362,300 for a flat, £617,700 for a house. his 75-acre park is one of London’s less predictable. It’s between T Twickenham and Feltham and is a thin, long green space running alongside the River Crane. From the mid-18th century until 1927 gunpowder was made on the site, which was then sold to the local council and turned into a wildlife park. This is now home to a thriving colony of marsh frogs and a rare kind of water vole as well as a Shot Tower, which is thought to have been used to spot the fires that gunpowder production often started. Also, the River Crane is said to be one of London’s few remaining natural water courses.

"Green spaces have a monetary value for homeowners" BEAVERSFIELD PARK, HOUNSLOW WEST, TW4

Average property prices nearby: £245,000 for a flat, £450,000 for a house. eaversfield Park is unusual because it’s one of the few parks to B be purpose-built since the Victorian era. It was opened in 1935 to give the residents of west London’s burgeoning suburbs somewhere to relax and exercise. The park became a ‘no-go zone’ at one point but in 2004 it was refurbished and has gone on to win Green Flag awards in 2008, 2010 and 2015. It has a cricket pitch, football pitches and tennis courts.

WATERLOW PARK, HIGHGATE, N6

Average property prices nearby: £811,726 for a flat, £2m for a house. aterlow Park is next to Highgate W Cemetery and is an achingly beautiful public park overlooked by a grand mansion which is now a café, education centre and events venue. Bequeathed to the public in 1889 by Sir Sidney Waterlow as a ‘garden for the gardenless’, today it includes several tennis courts, a nature area, playground, pounds and a kitchen garden. What hasn’t changed are the panoramic views. 

t is now 40 years since Agatha Christie, the I undisputed queen of murder mystery, died. But despite such a long time passing, she remains hugely popular. The Mousetrap shows no signs of ending and there are regular revivals of her two most famous characters – Hercule Poirot and Jane Marple – on TV. She also lived at 58 Sheffield Terrace from 1934 to 1941, where she is said to have written 16 of her novels including Death on the Nile. Her last London address was a flat at Swan Court in Chelsea where several novels including The Mousetrap were penned. A flat is currently available for sale within the building at £999,999.  Pastor Real Estate 020 3195 9595; pastor-realestate.com

“Christie also made her mark in the London property market” writer Agatha Christie, poet Dylan Thomas, The Rolling Stones and Bob Marley. More recent patrons have included The Duchess of Cambridge and Piers Morgan and ZacGoldsmith, who have both campaigned to save it. Their efforts were not in vain. The pub, which is in on Lawrence Street in Chelsea, was reopened earlier this year after a three-year closure and a £500,000 refit and is now being run by Mark Dyer, who has connections to the royal family. But The Cross Keys is no longer just a pub. The upper floors have also been given a makeover and converted into four luxury apartments. The latest of these to come on the market is this two bedroom maisonette offering amazing views over West London, priced at £1.695 million.  Winkworth 020 7589 6616; winkworth.co.uk

HOME TO A HEAD FOR HATS

adies’ Day at Royal Ascot this year featured the traditional array of weird headgear. One racegoer turned up in a hat designed to look like a ram’s head, another wore a giant rose-petal bonnet but actress Anna Friel wore something resembling a dead pigeon on her head. The annual June race meeting is famous for heady fashion, and designer David Shilling is credited with starting the trend. His hats hit the headlines when he designed one for his mother to wear to Royal Ascot when he was 12. The huge headpiece caused a sensation, got his parents on the front pages and Shilling kept up the tradition for more than 30 years until her death in 1999. These days Shilling is more likely to be wielding a blowtorch than a needle, and lives in Monaco, creating specially commissioned steel sculptures. He’s now selling his five-storey house in Marylebone. It has two bedrooms, three bathrooms, a dining room and courtyard. It’s on the market for £1.95m.  Beauchamp Estates 0207 722 9793; beauchamp.com
