Welcome It was late in late August when Steph Tarrier’s family gathered for a party in Deeping St James to celebrate what would have been Steph’s sister Lucy’s fortieth birthday. It was a warm evening and the party went on until quite late and it wasn’t until after 10.40 pm that the balloons were carefully released.

It was lunchtime the following day when Steph received a text from the Macgregor family in Fontaine au Bois in northern France to let her know that Greg had watched the balloon gently float down and land in his garden at 7.30 am. The family had their photo taken with the balloon (pictured Hugo, Florine, Katrine and Greg) and have remained in contact with Steph ever since. When Steph had written, ‘This is sent for Lucy’s 40th birthday. We love you Lucy and miss you always. If found please text me. Steph xx’ she had not in her wildest dreams imagined that someone would text her, let alone someone over the Channel. It was one of those occasions when the universe contrives to give you a silent hug. Here’s to those!

Holly Leggott, 15 of Market D e e p i n g finished third in the country in a tightly fought final at Indoor Rowing at the National School Games.

Holly rowed her best ever distance of 1313m competing against accomplished athletes whereas Holly’s main sport is competitive swimming with Deepings Swimming Club. She was presented her Bronze Medal by Olympic Rower Dame Katherine Grainger DBE (pictured). On the second day of competition her team won Gold in the Team Mixed Relay, her medal presented by Olympic Slalom Canoeist Etienne Stott MBE.

Holly Leggott, Bethany Eagle-Brown, Louis Metselaar and Tom Adams from the Deepings Swimming Club competed against 16 other teams at the National County Team Championships in Sheffield.

Each had an individual race, over 100m, as well as being chosen for the relays. In the boys 100m breaststroke, Louis broke the Swimming Club record, which had stood for 17 years, touching home in 12th place in 1.08.98. The time qualifies Louis for the Midlands winter short course championships in which he is joined by Bethany and Holly. Meanwhile, Tom competed in the 100m freestyle and posted his fastest time of the new season of 56.76, just off his personal best.

The Boundary takes the top spot!

The third annual Deepings Business Awards celebrated the achievements of a diverse cross section of the Deepings business community. The Boundary and River Restaurant, celebrating its tenth anniversary this month taking away the Award for the Business of the Year.

But before the celebrations commenced there was a tribute to the late Dick Callow, a stalwart of the Deepings business community for over 60 years, who died last month. Dick was the recipient of the inaugural lifetime achievement award and the room drank a toast to his memory and passed its condolences to the Callow family.

In the 2018/19 awards over 450 public nominations were received from which 65 companies were shortlisted across 14 categories. The shortlists were then put to the public to vote for their favourites.

Through Hail and High Water: Discovering Archaeology on the edge of Deeping Fen

The timings of a series of complex environmental incidents, including deposition of gravels, sea-level oscillations to the east and freshwater flooding from the high ground to the west, has resulted in the heavily settled Deeping Fen edge being able to claim a place as one of Britain’s major archaeological landscapes. Only one thing prevents it being on every archaeologist’s lips and on the tourist trail, and that is the fact that ‘there is nothing to see here!’. Indeed, much of the valuable archaeological and environmental information lies sealed beneath later clays and peats.

Welland Bank Quarry, now a nature reserve, was the scene of the discovery, in an ancient channel, of the skeletal remains of a straight-tusked elephant, dating to some 120,000 years ago.

Excavated ahead of gravel extraction, the site is also known for its Middle Bronze Age salt-making, dating to c.1500 -1200BC and laying claim to be the earliest known salt-making in the country. This tells us that the tidal range in the local rivers then extended to Deeping St James and possibly further upstream. More salt-making took place into the latest part of the Bronze Age and settlement at Welland Bank continued until the early part of the Iron Age (c.600 BC). Sometime after that the entire Welland Bank area was buried by alluvium from courses of the Welland and its tributaries, preserving the area under c.50cm of clay. Even the Bronze Age soil remains largely intact beneath the clay. This burial under sediments is what makes the archaeology of the area important. When

found, the sites are well preserved but are, of course, hard to locate under the clay.

Some of the Deeping sites have been buried by peat. In Borough Fen a reduction in the height of the peat due to drainage has revealed a cemetery of some 25 barrows.

Further north, a line of barrows, now all destroyed, was set out along the axis of the Crowland peninsula. One of a group of barrows near the A16 east of Deeping was excavated in 1991. Constructed on a Late Neolithic settlement it received a central burial of a child of about 12 years of age. Two posts marked the grave which was surrounded by eight concentric rings of posts, possibly mimicking a woodland setting. Several later phases of burial and cremations in pots were found.

Elsewhere in Deeping Fen a 14m long canoe was dug out of a channel in 1839. Of possible Iron Age date, it was recorded as having eight ribs. Once out it was burnt as it took up space!

Salt-making continued in the Middle Iron Age (c 400-300 BC) with sites at Outgang Road, Market Deeping, in one of many cut-off channels of the River Welland. Salt-making also took place at Towngate East in Market Deeping and along the fen edge at Langtoft. Shortly after the dates of these sites the tidal range receded and the peat fen extended further to the east. Salt-makers followed the tides and moved about 10km across the peat to restart in the Cowbit area. FEATURE slightly higher land, its position would have enabled control of access to the Crowland peninsula – but why was that needed?

Iron Age settlement followed the saltmaking at Outgang Road. Indeed, the occupation there covered the Roman period too, as it did at Towngate East.

Two major Roman sites are known in the Deepings area. To the west gravel extraction at West Deeping has revealed sites of many periods and includes extensive areas of ditched fields of prehistoric dates. Within the area was also a Roman villa of 2nd-3rd century AD date. Much building stone has also been found on the site. Two rolled up lead tablets of fourth-century date, one inscribed with a protective spell, were also found there.

Field-walking as part of the Fenland Project could not take place on the area of Prior’s Meadow, to the east of Deeping St James. It is a shame, as many indicators of an important Roman complex have been found there, including fragments of ritual crown and coin hoards. Moreover, immediately to the east are remnants of a straight and c.30m wide artificial watercourse at the side of Prior’s Meadow. Aligned east-west and of probable Roman date, it may well have joined a channel of the contemporary Welland with the major creek running through Deeping Fen, giving access to the settled Fenland. Other similar canals of Roman date are known, such as that connecting Bourne to a major creek in the east of Morton Fen. One more site deserves mention. This lay on the line of the Market Deeping bypass, west of the town, near Fox Covert Farm, on a gravel ridge in the Welland valley. A multi-period site with finds from the Neolithic to the Saxon periods, it yielded significant settlement of the Iron Age, Roman and Saxon periods. One Bronze Age burial and small Roman and Saxon cemeteries were present. Two 7th- century AD graves, a double and a triple burial, were particularly interesting.

without much care. The triple burial was a sad sight, with the skeletons of a male, a female and, facing the other way, a young child. Moreover, the female was pregnant.

We made sure that they were excavated ahead of the road construction with the dignity and respect seemingly lacking in their burial.

The above presents no more than a thumbnail sketch of the history of this key area in British archaeology. Much has been published in full and the books and articles are available for further information.

Judith Jacobs - A lady in beef Whether she is on BBC National News, with her arm helping out a reluctant calf, or ushering a class of excited school children around the farm, Judith Jacobs is always an explosion of blonde curls, brown look-at-me eyes and a stunning white-toothed smile; she is usually accompanied

by Ben her loyal and patient Collie.

Coming from a dairy farming family in Staffordshire the outdoor life is obviously good for Judith; she relishes the challenge of a summer drought that left only half the silage necessary to feed the stock over winter, of encouraging awareness of the importance of traceability in foodstuffs and staving off rural crime.

She is from a fourth generation farming family and there was no question that she and her sister and brother would carry on the tradition, Judith studying for an HND in agriculture at Harper Adams University. Her social life from 13-25 was centred on her local Young Farmers in Staffordshire, and she was selected for the Finals of Miss Young Farmer 1988. So it was a natural progression with her husband Andrew to become tenant farmers of Moor Farm, Newborough, in 1990 and to purchase the farm in 2002.

A relatively small farm of 650 acres in north-east Cambridgeshire bordering the Deepings, the farm has a history dating back to Neolithic times but the current farmhouse was built in 1828 and the farm buildings are of a similar period. This is a mixed farm of both arable land and stock. Crops grown are: wheat, barley, oil seed rape, oats, sugar beet, peas, beans, grass and mustard for Colman’s. Good animal husbandry is a particular passion of Judith’s, who likes to keep her cattle well fed on a natural free range diet of grass. The cows are mixed beef crosses and the sheep are Charollais, Texel and Jacob. There is minimal reliance on chemicals and drugs and instead a high level of husbandry. Ever wondered what happens to the chicks that hatch out when they have been placed as eggs in an incubator in school? Well, the Happy Chick Company home their chicks on friendly farms and there is none more 22

friendly than this farm, with its obligatory collie dogs and cockerels and hens rooting around in the yard.

Judith is rightly proud of the Red Tractor Food Standard that the farm has attained, which ensures independently approved standards for food and farming.

Judith is also motivated by the desire to link the consumer with the producer and to dispel many of the food horror stories which are often bandied about without justification. So she has embarked on an endless round of talks in schools, universities and to local WI, Rotary and U3A groups. At the same time she invites classes of schoolchildren to the farm where she gives them informative guided tours while charming them with their proximity to real farm animals. The annual Lambing Day, when crowds of young families make their way to the farm, is another opportunity for Judith to show life on the farm as it really is. A little later on in the year, Open Farm Sunday at Park Farm, Thorney, supported by the team at Moor Farm, is fast becoming a must-do on the calendar for young families.

is one of the ‘Ladies in Beef ’ founded by the first female President of the NFU, Minette Batters, and Jilly Greed and this year as part of the Great British Beef week she offered mini roast dinners to customers free of charge.

Recently, as part of her campaign against rural crime, Judith has appeared on BBC news when she hosted film crews on the farm to illustrate the problems of fly tipping, hare coursing and arson. She was able to show viewers how farmers are effectively building barricades on their farms to keep miscreants out. But one of the biggest crimes is to see an animal which she has reared for two and a half years sold as ‘buy one get one free’ and contributing to the pile of food waste.

In time for the festive season free-range and top quality turkeys are bought in from family run farm Godwicks of Kings Lynn, and there are geese and freerange cockerels as well as game: pheasants, grouse and partridge shot locally. Hampers can be made up to order as a thoroughly wholesome Christmas present.

Without question the 24/7 nature of the work, that can see her driving a tractor or JCB, lambing a sheep, calving a cow or providing a BBQ or hog roast at a celebration, does take its toll but it also has its compensations. Judith still feels the same thrill seeing a calf born as she did right at the start and the rural setting of the farm and the ability to watch as two chicks are raised by the barn owls she watches daily hunting for food is still a thrill.

She and her husband raised four children on the farm, all of whom have gone into farming; Jessica studied agriculture at Reading, Robert Civil Engineering at Nottingham, Pam Agriculture at Newcastle and Rosie is studying Food and Business Economics at Reading.

So the farming tradition is assured. There is still time for relaxation, though, and yes, for this busy lady it is not crochet or reading to which she turns but instead she runs with Nene Valley Harriers and plays netball three times a week for Baker Perkins. Oh, and then there is the next pop-up café to plan, and Christmas is coming and so it’s the annual nativity for St Bartholomew’s Church. And then its lambing again…

Having had a lifetime of experience in farming it is a natural progression for Judith to channel her enthusiasm into the causes that have been the mainstay of her life; so she is a great supporter of Newborough Young Farmers of whom this year she is President, and the increasingly popular tractor run started from the farm this year. She

Jean and Bill Shaw of awardwinning Boundary Fish and Chips and River Restaurant selected the Lincs Air Ambulance as their charity and were the first to choose six serviette rings with a diamond pattern cut into them, reflecting colours of the room, a sophisticated accompaniment to someone’s Christmas table for just £5.95.

Meanwhile Alison Ireland of local gift shop Cloudnine, ably assisted by Cory of The Granary, West Deeping, selected a 1960s’ West German vase in nice muted modern colours – a snip at £15 and reduced to £10 after a call to the seller. Cory knew a London Interior Designer friend who had bought two similar vases on a recent visit which would have attracted a far larger sum in the capital.

Again with the festive season in her sights, Jean alighted on a pair of red and white handkerchief bowls inspired by Venini Glass, one with dots and the other with stripes. It was decided that they would look perfect filled with bonbons for a seasonal celebration and at just £3.95 each – they were too good to miss!

Glass proved to be the next purchase for Alison and Cory who spied a Murano glass bowl crafted by the eminent Venetian artist in glass, Walter Fulan. Both bold and delicate, this was thought to be an auspicious purchase reduced to just £8, especially as the artist had recently died. Would this add to the value of his work?

Jean and Bill had turned out to be a thrifty pair, purchasing a bold white vase with their last £8 – and with £5 left after a reduction by the seller. John Ireland explained that

BARGAIN HUNTING there was no age to it but it was a bit of fun which would complement a contemporary interior.

The coup de grace for Alison and Cory was a cameo glass bracelet dating back to the 1960s-70s – unusual and attractive and thought by John to be worth every penny of its £32 – but the West German vase had to be returned so that the couple could afford the bracelet. They go into the sale with just £2 left of their original stake.

All proceeds from the Cloudnine team will go towards Age Concern, a cause generously championed by Alison as her Charity of the Year.

All that now is left to do is to see where the hammer comes down on these items at an auction to be held at the Golding Young building in Bourne… Watch this space!

Bird migration- a natural miracle Part Two: Winter Visitors from the North by William Bowell Everyone knows one Swallow doesn’t make a spring.

What makes a spring is the thousands of birds that make the epic journey from their wintering grounds in Africa every year to breed on our shores. Why leave the warmth of Africa which let’s face it, will be hotter than Britain to breed here? Food of course.

Most of our summer visitors are insect feeders and they come to indulge on our insect population during the warmer months. This is also Northern Goldeneye gives the insect populations in their wintering grounds time to recover while they are up north so insects and birds alike can continue to survive and maintain populations. Isn’t the natural world clever?!

By the time you are reading this though dear reader, these signs of summer, the Swallow feeding over the paddock; the Chiffchaff singing in the woods and Swift screaming over the rooftops will be long gone.

But fear not. Winter brings on a whole new wave of birds to our shores and this migration starts in earnest in October Redwing and they will still be arriving at the beginning of December and perhaps bring with them some of the best wildlife spectacles you can witness in Britain.

a Redwing flying over. A lot of these winter visitors migrate at night and Redwings are probably the most audible around here at night.

These small thrushes (smaller than our native Song Thrush), along with their larger cousins Fieldfares (the same size as our Mistle Thrush) add a splash of colour to our hedgerows. They make the journey over the north sea to feed up on our plentiful berry bounty during the early autumn months, moving onto worms later in the season.

And where on earth do these birds that want to endure our long, cold winters come from I hear you cry? Up north of course. It very much is the invasion of the Scandinavian pretty boys as thousands of birds which have been enjoying the long summer days of the far north come down to literally enjoy the fruits of our summer: berries and grass.

This winter I predict it will probably be a particularly good year for these Thrushes, as berry crops in Scandinavia have failed whilst in Britain they have done exceptionally with our long hot summer we have just enjoyed (or endured depending on your view point). Along with these Thrushes, we might be very lucky to see a good year for Waxwing.

Waxwings are generally rare winter visitors to Britain but every five years or so we enjoy ‘invasion’ years.

When the berry crops of Norway and alike fail, they pile into Britain in their thousands. With their pinky brown plumage, punk hair doos, black and yellow wings with red waxy tips they are proper lookers bound to turn a head or two.

These Viking invaders aren’t scared of a bit of cold as you can imagine but the short daylight hours up north just won’t give them enough time to feed to create enough energy to survive the cold, coupled with snow covering food sources they are forced south.

On a clear night in early November, if you are brave enough to stand outside, between the bangs and whizz of fireworks you may well hear the sweep of

BIRDS These will turn up anywhere with berries- including your garden and are a real treat to see. I have seen them in all kinds of places in the past, in Deeping and are definitely worth keeping your eye open for.

And perhaps, if you are feeling very generous, you will alert the wider public on one of our many local facebook groups we are blessed with in this town?

Down on the river and local gravel pits are water and surround environs will also attract hundreds of ‘out Bohemian Waxwing of towners’. Swans and Ducks also make the North Sea crossing with the along Deeping Highbank for the larger Whooper added advantage they can actually land on the sea if Swan. Their straighter necks and yellow and black bills they get tired. Listen out to the whistle of the colourful make them stand out among the many hundred Mutes Wigeon as you walk around Deeping Lakes this winter, along the Highbank. Oh, and their ‘whooping’ call is as they feed on the grassy banks and keep an eye out also a give away...

Wider afield, a visit to Norfolk of a late afternoon can bring an altogether more impressive spectacle.

Park at Lady Anne’s Drive at Holkham and you will be surrounded by Geese- Brent, White fronted and Pink-footed. As the evening draws in, these numbers are boosted by tens of thousands more Pink-footed Geese which have been feeding out on the sugar beet fields during the day. Numbers can reach one hundred thousand and the noise and sight is truly breathtaking.

We are truly blessed to live on a small group of islands which constantly create the right conditions to see the turnover in wildlife during the seasons, making every month different and exciting. As the bloke from the Fast Show once said, ‘Aren’t birds brilliant?’

The Great Northern Steam Fair

The world famous open-air museum at Beamish plays host to the annual Great Northern Steam Fair – so on a weekend in April not only is it possible to see how life was in the North East of England in the 1820s, 1900s and 1940s but there is also the opportunity to see around 20 road steam vehicles and up to 100 motor vehicles on display as well.

Beamish is a living, working museum set in 300 acres of beautiful Durham countryside. Costumed folk bring to life the town, the pit village, home farm and Pockerley Old Hall. During the steam fair the narrow gauge and colliery railways are in operation and rides are offered on the passenger steam train from Rowley Station. The station was originally situated near Consett, County Durham, but was moved to Beamish and reopened by the poet John Betjeman in 1976.

A wrought-iron footbridge from the town crosses the railway line and leads towards the signal box dating from 1896, about 20 years older than the one which is currently being rebuilt in Deeping St James and which proudly bore the name James Deeping. Across the tracks is a goods yard and goods shed dating back to the 1850s. The coal drops from West Boldon reflect the important role of the coal merchants in towns

and villages. The Coal office, originally owned by James White of Hexham, is of a type which was found in almost every goods yard until the late 1960s. A variety of railway wagons can be seen around the Railway Station, which recreates the life of the station in Edwardian times.

Local coach operator Impressions of Peterborough is offering a three-day, two-night trip to Beamish and the Great Northern Steam Fair with two nights dinner, bed and breakfast in Blackwell Grange Hotel in the countryside just outside Darlington. Blackwell Grange is a 17th-century mansion with decadent chandeliers, a sweeping staircase and a preponderance of squashy sofas in which to relax and enjoy an English Country House weekend. Judging took place to the harmonies of the Ramshackle Serenade and afterwards the cakes were sold for the benefit of Sue Ryder and Dementia South Lincs. Sarah, former pastry chef at Browns Hotel, Mayfair, and The George, Stamford, commented ‘The winner’s cake not only looked striking, but also tasted fantastic! The sponge itself was cooked very well, keeping it light and fluffy. The combination of the cream filling, strawberries and fresh mint all worked beautifully together. It looked impressive with three equally proportioned layers, topped with more fruit and perfectly formed pink macaroons! Not only did it look the part, but after tasting one mouthful it left you wanting more!’ Moving on to the runner up Sarah said ‘The cake that came second in the competition was a complete contrast to the first. It was a beautifully rich, moist chocolate cake filled with a surprisingly light peanut buttercream. The combination

worked extremely well, proving that it’s definitely about the flavour as well as the final presentation”. Finally in this magnificent trio, Sarah was also impressed with the cake that came third: ‘The cake in third place was not the only carrot cake entered, but this one definitely stood out with an added ingredient... ginger! It gave true warmth and depth of flavour, together with the cream cheese frosting which generously filled and topped the sponge, decorated with nuts and small marzipan carrots.’

A specially created gin menu from the Waterton Arms was available for spectators. Organisers Sue Laughton and Emma Birdson included a charity day money draw and a generously supported raffle, and the event raised a handsome £1200 for the two charities. Said the Waterton’s Kevin Laughton: ‘We were delighted by the support that this event received, the number and quality of all the cakes and the generously donated prizes and all those who attended. We would like to extend a great big DSJ Thank You!’ 41

Links to the past A little while ago in I’d rather be in Deeping, we featured Stamford House and the tales behind the façade. Little did we know that one of the relations of Eliza Perkins who had married James Needham at St Guthlac’s Church in 1862 and raised her family of seven here, is living here in Market Deeping!

Terry Hollowell tells us that Eliza Perkins was one of ten children of Mark Henry George Wright Perkins, born in Deeping St James in 1798, and Ann Perkins, née Skinner. As recorded in the 1851 Census, Eliza’s elder sister, Betsy Isabella Perkins, was dairymaid for the Revd William Hildyard, Rector of St Guthlac’s Church, Market Deeping. While working for the Rector she met and fell in love with Yorkshireman Thomas Wright, who worked as the coachman for the Rector, and was a man 26 years her senior! They married at the Church on 26th May 1857 and took over the Rectory Farm at Market Deeping. This was a farm of 120 acres, employing one man and one boy. In 1859 they had a daughter

whom they named Jane Ann Wright. She was just three years old when her father Thomas died, buried in Market Deeping by his erstwhile employer, Revd William Hildyard. Jane was 65 years old when she died in January 1924 in Deeping St James Five years after Thomas died, Betsy married again, this time to Albert Bellairs who had been born in Market Deeping in 1841. He was the son of John and Elizabeth Bellairs, farmers of Towngate, Market Deeping. They farmed 70 acres and employed two men and two boys, according to the 1871 Census. Following their marriage in Islington the couple moved to Borden House Farm in Crowland where they extended their Terry Hollowell acreage from 54 to 277 acres over the decade 1871-81. They went onto employ eight men and three boys by 1881. Two sons were born to the couple: Walter Bellairs in Market Deeping in 1868 and Perkins Bellairs in Crowland in 1871. Presumably the boy was named Perkins to keep the family connection, as was often the case when children were given the surname of their maternal line.

Perkins married Marian Wise from Woodnewton, Northamptonshire, and between 1894 and 1902 went on to have four children, three girls born in London and one boy born in Crowland. Shortly after the birth of her last child, Marian had a breakdown and returned to Woodnewton to her mother. Perkins was left as a single dad to bring up the family and look after

the farm that he inherited when his father Albert died leaving an estate of £8,582.

The second daughter of Marian and Albert was Florence, born in 1897 who along with her sisters Dorothy and Grace all had children out of wedlock (as they were all reaching their maturity at the time of the First World War this was in all probability a result of the demographic situation at the time). Florence was in the Army in the war and her daughter was born in Leeds eighth months after the celebration of the Armistice! Florence later married Isaac Slack (pictured bottom left) in 1924.

Her daughter Mary, having been brought home and presented as a tiny underweight bundle, was brought up by Marian’s elder sister, Sarah Jane Wise in Woodnewton, along with her cousins. The doctor, having been summoned to examine Mary, did not think she would survive but she was fed a diet of bread and milk under the supervision of Sarah’s mother Jane, the local midwife, and lived to the grand old age of 95!

Mary married Joseph Hollowell just before he was called up to the War in 1940 and didn’t see him for another four years. They had five children including Terry, and lived in the village all their married life, Mary working for some time as a sewing maid at Oundle School. When Terry and his wife moved to Market Deeping in 1975 they had no idea of their links to the past with Betsy and Eliza, and the large house with the Wellingtonia tree in the garden!

Following a seminar given to both Market Deeping and Deeping St James on Planning by the SKDC Executive, earlier this year, through our councillors and the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group, we have had meetings with developers, their agents and land owners concerning development sites identified in the 2018 SKDC Local Plan to influence their specifications before they become specific planning applications.

This pro-active approach was repeated recently when a developer met us to discuss a proposal to site a proposed fuel station and M&S Food Store at the roundabout junction of the A15 and the bypass in the north-west quadrant, resulting in our being satisfied over a number of possible concerns. Finally, please come to our reinvigorated and redesigned Christmas Town Market on Sunday the 25th November, and see how it has changed.

The long summer heatwave ensured the crowds came out to the Deepings Raft Race and the Deepings Lions Duck Race. It was my honour to open both events, and afterwards I enjoyed visiting the many attractions and stalls. Meeting people enhances our lives, and helps create the friendly community we have in Deeping St James. Have you seen the Parish Council gazebo out and about during the summer months? This is new for 2018 and allows DSJ Parish Council to have a more visual presence at events, where we can meet and talk to people as well as promote the Council’s various initiatives. At the end of 2017 Deepings Police Station was closed and the Community was told it was no longer required.

Councillors from DSJ had other ideas, however, and following a lot of work, the Police Station was reopened and is run by a group of volunteers. Cllr Chris Halls and I are two of the volunteers, and we were both involved in the recent Open Day where tours of the Police Station were given, and children had the chance to play in a police car and van. It did not take long for them to work out how to switch on the siren! The queue to visit the cells stretched round the block, and I had the pleasure of spending four hours in the cells where mug shots could be taken. A group of DSJ Parish Councillors have also recently stepped into the breach to save Deepings Youth Group. A new committee has been formed, and negotiations are ongoing to ensure it reopens shortly.

Dr John Heywood (1934 - 2018) John Heywood was a general practitioner at the Deepings practice for over thirty years from 1964. He saw the community through change and growth, overseeing the move from the old surgery at 3 Stamford Road to new health centres on Godsey Lane. He was an active Town Councillor, a school governor, and mainstay of the Sports and Social Club.He will be remembered with affection and gratitude for a lifetime of service to the community.

Five great places to dine with kids Zoë Kornfeld and Helen Clark recommend five local places to try…

There are so many good reasons to dine out as a family: not only do children get a fantastic opportunity to build their social skills, it means everyone can enjoy a shared love of food, whilst trying out new dishes together. Children begin to build healthy, inquisitive relationships with food and adults get to reminisce about date nights gone by. Sometimes the idea is smoother than the reality, but that’s all part of the fun! Go armed with a pocketfull of stickers and crayons, and book your table in advance. Think carefully about the time of day that you go, and perhaps look online at the menu, to check there will be something to suit even the youngest taste buds.

There really are so many wonderful places to venture out locally with the kids, but here are a few suggestions to get you going…

Lilli’s Tearoom and Cakery

The Goat A firm favourite with local parents, The Goat in Frognall is a traditional pub, offering a large menu, jammed full of popular dishes. Its large beer garden, fully equipped with climbing frame, slide and swings is one of the big reasons why it is so popular with parents and children alike. We visited early one Saturday evening, and there were plenty of families enjoying the last few hours of Autumn sun together. We were greeted with smiles, and a “nothing is too much trouble” attitude that made us feel instantly at ease, and took our places in the Garden Room.

The menu had plenty to choose from, and we were provided with crayons to amuse busy little hands, while we waited. The children’s meals were reasonably priced, and certainly generous in size, which was handy when most of the spaghetti landed on the floor courtesy of our weaning baby! We were so full, that we sadly didn’t manage dessert, which, of course, gives us the perfect excuse to visit again soon.

With beautiful vintage décor, china crockery, and flower displays throughout, the friendly staff at Lilli’s are ready to welcome you, and your youngsters. A great place to stop by for a spot of lunch, walkins are welcome, although tables can be reserved, and high chairs are available on request. The children’s menu is simple, but reasonably priced, offering a choice of jacket potatoes or sandwiches. If you fancy a treat, the extensive range of homemade cakes and biscuits on display is a real crowd pleaser. Our food arrived quickly, but whilst we waited, the little ones were invited to play with the small selection of toys and books, available in their own activity corner, viewable from every table in the restaurant. All the practicalities had been thought of; with wipeable table cloths, paper napkins and baby-changing facilities all at hand to take the stress out of dining with messy eaters. Plus, with a car park only a couple of minutes away, and pushchairs welcome, there really is no excuse not to pay them a visit!

Mulberry Tree Farm A little further afield, nestled away in Hampton, but totally worth the short trek, this busy eatery provides so much for local families. Once through the door, we found a busy, but friendly, atmosphere, as the smell from the carvery tempted us inside. Eating out with a large family can sometimes be costly, but the low price definitely didn’t compromise the quality, with plenty of tasty seasonal vegetables on offer. We timed our visit to coincide with one of the many extra activity days available at Mulberry Tree Farm, which are understandably very popular. A mobile petting farm, including skinny pigs, and a giant rabbit, had taken up temporary residence in the car park, raising funds for a local charity - check out Facebook for other events! There are spaces both indoor and outdoor for children to burn off some energy in between courses, A specifically designated area for family dining provides stimulation and fun for younger visitors, but we found families enjoying all areas of the inn, and left in no doubt that this was a place for all of the family to get together, socialize, and spend time enjoying a hearty meal.

Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the inviting menu has a choice of children’s meals to include a drink, and pudding, offered as part of the price. The up-tempo music and buzz from the kitchen mean you don’t feel like you’re disturbing anyone. Our dining experience was shared by plenty of other families, with children of all ages, and it was clear to see that the milkshakes were a very popular choice across the restaurant …and who can’t resist the pancakes and maple syrup for brunch? Driftwood Bistro Nestled away amongst a row of shops in DSJ, this little oasis of yumminess is fast approaching its first anniversary. An award-winning, family run restaurant, Driftwood Bistro offers an innovative and refreshing menu - I was so excited to try it out, after hearing so many good things from others.

We chose lunch time to visit, as we knew it would be quieter, and were greeted by a warm and friendly atmosphere. Love and care had been put into every detail, from the décor and table settings, to the wide range of drinks available. It was clear to see the passion for food and customer care from the moment we walked in. The children’s meals were beautifully prepared and I ended up having three truly delicious, gorgeously presented courses, as I couldn’t resist what the menu had on offer. It was lovely to have a family dining experience that felt quite special and unique. With top quality food and flavours on offer just down the road, we shall be retuning very soon.
