When you visit Deeping Rangers ground at Outgang Road you will enter through the same turnstiles that those lucky enough to have seen England’s victory in the 1966 World Cup passed through! They were acquired from Wembley Stadium by Robin Crowson and the late Haydon Whitham in 2002.

Not only local, the Club’s Malcolm Christie and Ben Wright have achieved on the national stage, Christie going onto play for Derby County and Middlesborough and Wright who played at Bristol City and then for Norway’s Viking Stavanger Club where he scored in their 2003 EUFA Cup win over Chelsea. This success has been attributed to the youth set up at the Club.

This September the ground, home to the team since 1985, achieved their highest attendance ever when 635 watched the A team play AFC Rushden & Diamonds in the FA Cup 2nd qualifying round under new manager Michael Goode, ex Junior, Youth and Senior Player. The dizzy heights of the 2003/4 season when the Club won 11 trophies overall have yet to be replicated but with support from local business such as the new sponsorship deal struck with Jamie Clark of JC Security, pictured above, and with more and more local people identifying a trip to the Match as a great way to spend a winter Saturday afternoon supporting their local team - the only way is up!

The Spinroom Studio raised nearly £600 for breast cancer care on their recent charity day with indoor cycling, an insanity workout and cheerleading, pictured.

DSJ resident and proud father of Holly Locke, Ian, completed a 630 mile cycle ride from Lands End to the most northerly point in England, Marshall Meadows with nine friends.

This was in tribute to the resilience his daughter had shown in her fight against a brain tumour leading to her tragic death aged just 22 in November last year. The ride raised more than £10,000 for the Brain Tumour Charity which was set up to fund research and while representing a challenge for the riders who had dusted their cycles off for the event, has whetted their appetite for more and John O Groats beckons! Walk, Tea and Talk organised by Emma Canham, author of belifehappy raised almost £1,000 as part of World Mental Health Day 10th October.

Landmark Cat Children and staff with residents from Braeburn Lodge buried a time capsule which will be uncovered in fifty years time. As well as a copy of I’d rather be in Deeping magazine, the capsule also included a weekly shopping receipt, coins and a wonderful record that children had written about their daily lives.

Riverside Beads held a Dabble Day raising £586 for Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice bringing the total they have raised for the charity to over £10,000.

Pam Mansfield and Michael Kerslake were delighted to accept the donation of £2000 raised by the Deepings Raft Race Committee at this years Race.

Beneficiaries were also Dementia Care South Lincs for whom Janet Bird received a cheque for £4000. The Deepings Rugby Club also received a cheque as Chair of the Raft Race Committee, Kevin Barber announced a closer collaboration with the Club in the future.

Children of Deeping St James Community Primary School received a presentation for producing the best banner for the event.

Ginge had been making his daily trip to the Barn Garden Centre, Newborough for two years before his owner Sibel joined him as an assistant there.

He likes to sleep in a basket behind the tills and then hunts through the night before making an appearance at home at 4.00am.

FEATURE The Burberry Group plc is a leading global fashion brand, famous for its iconic, check design and British heritage branding. What, you are asking, is its connection with Deeping St James?

Elizabeth Chesterfield, native of Church Street, Market Deeping, having served an apprenticeship in Leicester, went as a young woman of 34 to work for Thomas Burberry when he ran his own clothing outfitters in Basingstoke. While this firm had had small beginnings, by the time Elizabeth was recruited in 1881, she was one of 70 employees.

Elizabeth’s father, Thomas Chesterfield, was a Deeping butcher, married to Elizabeth, née Markham. Thomas’s business prospered and by 1861 he farmed 460 acres in the area.

The couple had eleven children, two of whom, Thomas and Elizabeth, went to work for Burberry. Thomas Burberry was a strict Baptist and Sunday church attendance was a condition of employment; as Baptists themselves the Chesterfields fitted in well. They made a good impression on this successful entrepreneur; Thomas was encouraged to set up his own shop in Alton in 1877 and Elizabeth, under his guidance, purchased her own shop at Bridgefoot in Deeping St James. In 1909 Elizabeth was received into the membership of DSJ Baptist Church, transferring from Basingstoke Strict Baptist Chapel.

She ran the shop in some style with the help of her nephew, Fred, who was taken on as an apprentice. As well as a drapers and a grocery shop, they also provided an upholstery service run by her brother, John, who had a cabinet making and upholstery business which he ran from Mill Lane, now Stamford Road, Market Deeping with his wife Elizabeth Ann nee Mills Jackson.

Eventually, on the completion of his apprenticeship, Fred left the district and Elizabeth employed her two nieces, Letitia, daughter of Ebeneezer and Hilda, daughter of James.

FEATURE In the family tradition, both were received and baptised into the Baptist Church by M.J. Tryon in 1925.

Pairs of boots were lined up outside the shop to tempt customers to buy them, but this also had the undesired effect of making stealing them easier. George Fensome, a groom aged 19, received 18 months in the Lincoln Borstal Institute for stealing a pair in 1910 and in the next year, James Brown of Hull and Ernest Cook of Deptford each received three months’ hard labour for the crime which had been witnessed by Lizzie Patchett.

When Elizabeth’s died in 1918 she left her shop in the capable hands of Letitia; she also received Elizabeth’s piano. Hilda was given Elizabeth’s watch, Bible and a chest of drawers. Reserved, genteel and nicely dressed spinster ladies, they were also shrewd business women, and the shop became an institution supplying locals with clothing and essentials from the 1920s to the 40s. Rarely did anyone leave without making a purchase and they were happy for customers to take away garments for them to try at home.

Elizabeth Alice Chesterfield nee Mills Jackson (1846-1926)

Nancy Titman vividly remembers, ‘The shop door between two display windows had a jangling bell on a strip of metal which announced the arrival of customers in the shop. Inside it was a bit dim, cool and very tidy with a distinctive and sterile smell, a mixture of new cotton material and every day leather. Behind the counter on the left, the fixtures held boxes of boots and shoes while on the counter stood a glass showcase containing shoe polish in round tins, brushes, blakeys, inner soles, shoe laces and blocks of whitening for cleaning tennis shoes. Nearby was the supply of James Chesterfield (1855 - 1936) leather laces used by farmworkers to lace up their hobnail boots and here the huge wallpaper books waited ready for the family to decide on the next theme for ‘changing rooms’. The dado was important too.

The right hand shop was more interesting, the fixtures being shelves, some with rolls of cotton material on display but most containing crisp brown paper parcels. In those days merchandise was kept wrapped 12

When a customer came in and named her requirements, Miss Chesterfield would size up the situation and knew which parcel to reach for and would skilfully undo the slip knot and turn back the brown paper to reveal the selection of goods which might have been petticoats, stockings, liberty bodices, pinafores or bloomers, anything in fact that a lady or girl might wear.

Knitting was a popular pastime and a great many garments were knitted at home from tiny baby clothes to cardigans and pullovers for men and women.

A good range of knitting requirements were kept, patterns, needles of all sizes, stitch holders and also a stock of wool in different thicknesses, 2,3 and 4 ply. Also presented in the usual brown paper parcels, after deciding on a colour, Miss Chesterfield would take out a loose hank and hold it over her left forearm while carefully separating as many one ounce skeins as required with her right hand. A rapid twist and the skeins became a tidy bundle for the customer.’

On Letitia’s marriage in 1945 to Charles Broughton in Peterborough the shop was sold but the tradition Thomas Burberry of shop keeping in Deeping St James continued with Len Ayres, the new occupier of this shop. Letitia died in Kings Lynn in 1963 and Hilda in 1985 in Chiltern Beaconsfield.

Cissy’s Cinderella Cissy Burton remembers her first job

Very often for girls at this time, work still meant going into domestic service and so Cissy left her cosy cottage home, where a good fire kept the family warm all winter and there was always wholesome food on the table. How different was her experience to be when she moved to Kingscote, also in Church Street, where she went to do domestic chores for Mrs Shepherd and her daughter Ethel, a fifty-year-old spinster who was sweet on the then Vicar of the Priory Church, the Revd Payne.

Daily she washed the tiled hall floor and beat the rugs. At this time everybody liked their front steps to be sparkling clean and so Cissy was set the task of scrubbing the green slime that came from the shrubs around the door off the steps, using isinglass left over from preserving eggs. She cleaned the fire grates, blacked the lead and set the fires. When the Revd Payne paid his weekly visit for afternoon tea, the best china was used, all carefully prepared by Cissy. Unfortunately, in spite of her best efforts, the Reverend did not reciprocate Ethel’s interest; his domestic arrangements were cared for by Miss Washington, his housekeeper and her daughter, Joyce. Tea, for Cissy, was two slices of bread and butter and stewed apples. Every day. When she did pluck up courage to ask for more, Ethel hit the ceiling, telling Cissy, ’You eat too much!’ Readicut wool rugs had just become popular and Cissy would sit in the evenings with Ethel and her mother, making the rugs for Ethel‘s sister in Newborough and soon to be married. She was told in no uncertain terms never to repeat what she overheard.

Cissy’s small room was at the back of the house. It was bitterly cold and she slept in her coat to keep warm.

Cissy Burton was born in 1920 in a tiny thatched cottage in Church Street in Deeping St James.

She was one of six children; her Dad, John, known as Ninty, born in North Fen House, Deeping Gate, had lost his arm at the Battle of the Somme, and her mother, Alice Smart, was a native of West Deeping. Money was tight and although when Cissy grew up she wanted to be a nurse or teacher, there was no money for for her training. After attending the little school in Church Street, now the Scout Hut and later the Cross School, where Mr Towning was the headmaster, she went to the Catholic school in Peterborough until at 14 years old, she had to go out to work.

Not knowing what to do for the best and scared of incurring the wrath of the formidable Ethel, the terrified Cissy dropped the ash pan, the ashes tumbling all over the red stair carpet. Fortuitously just at that moment Cissy’s Mother knocked at the door anxious to check on Cissy’s chilblains. Seeing the calamity, she set to and cleared up, scurrying home to tell John what she had witnessed. Money was tight but not so tight that he could leave his only daughter in such misery. John Burton demanded that his daughter be fetched home and so ended this unhappy chapter.

Cissy did meet her Prince Charming. The Nuns at her old school in Manor House Street in Peterborough had found her a job with the Homan family, newly arrived in Peterborough from Holland. Here she spent four happy years, meeting her future husband, Harold Hudspeth, at a dance in the Unity Hall, Lincoln Road. They had a family of three and Cissy, at the age of 50, attended Hull University and received a Diploma to enable her to teach mentally handicapped children. As this was at that time considered to be a function of the health service, she achieved her lifetime ambition of working in health and education.

In time for National Sausage Week, Cornish Chef, Rob Johnson of the Waterton Arms conjures up more than just a little magic with his take on an old favourite, Bangers and Mash.

Earning his spurs as a Junior Pastry Chef at the Royal Duchy Hotel in Falmouth, with 4 stars and 2 AA Rosettes, one of the finest luxury hotels in Cornwall, Rob arrived in Deeping St James via France, Switzerland and Austria. Bringing with him a wealth of experience having cooked for the rich and famous, he seemingly effortlessly conjured up Crepinettes (a small flattened sausage) with slow roasted banana shallots and rainbow chard garnished with micro herbs, served with a red wine gravy on a puree of mash.

Rob first took the skin off six Lincolnshire Sausages locally sourced from Grasmere, rolling the sausage meat into balls. These were then wrapped in veil fat reminiscent of lace, crisping when cooked but keeping the dish moist. He then placed the balls into the fridge to chill for fifteen minutes but they could be left there for an hour or so.

Taking them out of the fridge the crepinettes are then pan fried in oil with a couple of cubes of butter so they are gently caramelising.. Rob then expertly took them out of the pan when they were a pale golden colour, not too much because they are then placed in the oven at 200-220 degrees for 1012 minutes.

Meanwhile some creamy mash puree had been prepared.

Boiling potatoes in the normal way, taking them out when ready and leaving to dry. Rob then pushed the potatoes through a potato ricer, not in my kitchen armoury at the moment but soon will be! Available at Wilko and Lakeland. Having mashed the potatoes well he added 75ml milk and 75ml cream (single or double will do the job) and blitzed the mix with a hand stick blender until smooth. Leaving in the pan and covering with cling film to keep warm.

FOOD

Grown in the eastern counties of the UK, Echalions better known as banana shallots after their shape, have become a favourite with top chefs and can now be found in supermarkets locally. Cut in half vertically, Rob kept their skins on to keep moisture in, lying them on a tray and seasoning with salt, pepper and thyme. These were then cooked in an oven for 30 minutes at 200 degrees. Taken out, left to cool, the skin was then removed.

At this stage the crepinettes were taken out of the oven and wrapped in silver foil allowing them to rest while Chef bought everything else together.

This included chopping up some rainbow chard, it could also have been the hardy winter cabbage, cavolo nero, popped into boiling water with butter, oil and seasoning. Boiled quickly and then drained and allowed to sit for one and a half minutes.

Rob piped the potato puree onto the middle of warmed plates. The cabbage was placed on a j cloth to drain off any excess fat and then spooned carefully onto the puree. The shallots were added expertly to the arrangement with the crepinettes and the dish was garnished with micro herbs; in this case mustard and cress but pea shoots are also available locally.

The meal was then completed with red wine gravy, made from a reduction of red wine mixed with chicken or vegetable stock which can be bought locally and a flourish of caramelised onion tuille to finish!

THE GOAT

‘he would pop into the Goat on his way to Norfolk to enjoy a Goats Milk cocktail’

It’s Friday, it’s five to five and it’s crackerjack!

“Tonight” Eamonn Andrews, wielding a giant red book, would say to a startled celebrity “This is Your Life!“ Appearing from behind a hiding place, the room would fill with friends and family, some of whom at a guess, the subject would not necessarily be delighted to see and best forgotten moments from the past would play themselves out on the screen. No wonder it was such a long running hit! From 1955 until 1987 this was a perennial favourite with TV viewers, Andrews himself was voted television personality of the year four times in his career in which he was also associated with the panel show ’What’s my line’ and Children’s TV programme ‘Crackerjack’ What is less well known about this TV personality was that with his wife, Grianne and poodle, Quiz, he would pop into the Goat on his way to Norfolk to enjoy a Goats Milk cocktail. This was one of the selection of exotically named cocktails concocted by

the then licensee, Eric Johnson. an Old Deaconian. Eric had served in the RAF and played football for them in France, Belgium, Holland and Norway. However a shooting accident in which his left thigh was shattered followed by another accident three years later meant that he could no longer play his beloved game, but he did become chairman of Deeping United.

At the age of just 32 in 1951 and recently married to Joan Overton of Hatfield, Eric found himself at the helm of the Goat and set to to make the Pub the most popular in the area.

He discovered that he had a penchant for creating innovative and delicious cockails and Gloom Chaser, Lip Service, Horses Neck, Feather Freezer, Silver Billet and Bull Frog were soon on the menu. The most popular was Goats Milk which he dispensed at the Goats Milk Bar. It had a pleasantly sweet taste using goats or cows milk according to preference. The other ingredients remained a closely guarded secret.

THE GOAT

Eric was a creative soul and when not holding court in the bar, he took up the unlikely craft of marquetry. Self taught, he produced over a dozen pictures in the early fifties. Some he sold or gave to friends while others provided decoration at the Goat, these included a mountain scene, a street in an old town, a galleon and a water mill.

The latter was exhibited at a national arts and crafts exhibition in London winning a prize out of an entry of 2,000. After it was hung at the Goat to much local admiration.

Eric found himself at the helm of the Goat and set to to make the Pub the most popular in the area

In 1953 a stranger called In at the Pub and locals were surprised to notice that the new customer was not wearing any shoes.

Unusual even by the standards of the Goat, which was attracting some notoriety with it’s flamboyant landlord, the stranger explained that he was embarking on a pilgrimage to Rome. Understandably, this claim was met with some scepticism but six months later a newspaper reported that their visitor had completed his pilgrimage entirely bare footed.

Mr and Mrs Johnson retired from the Goat in 1964 leaving a legacy to be embraced by future landlords of the Pub, the cudgels of which have recently been taken up by Richard Barrett from the Nags Head in Bourne who embarked upon his career in the family food Pub trade by pot washing at the Goat aged fourteen!

Never move them when they are burning.

Check smoke alarm Improve your chances of surviving a fire by checking and testing your smoke alarm regularly and never leave the batteries out. Older people are more at risk so as well as testing your own alarm, check theirs too. Advice from Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue on 01522 580397.

Sleep safely Take a mobile phone to bed. This will enable you to quickly call the police from the relative safety of your bedroom if you suspect intruders downstairs. Always set your burglar alarm to on when you are home asleep.

Don’t let you or your pipes freeze

Door and lock maintenance

Freezing weather is due and will continue through the winter if forecasts are to be believed. Where possible, set your heating at a minimum of 18 degrees in waking hours and an absolute minimum of 5 degrees in sleeping hours. Make sure outdoor taps are insulated too. Pop in and see that your neighbour is coping ok. Got your boiler serviced yet ready for the winter?

A quick spray of lock lubricant, available from CJ Supplies Morton, not WD40 which can have an adverse effect, into your outside facing door locks and locking mechanism can save problems in the winter months.

Recommend you spray door locks from the outside in.

Don’t forget your garage, shed and other outside locks!

Snow and ice risk A simple cheap option to reduce the risk of slipping as you leave the house, is to apply salt like crystals directly to these areas from a small container available from shops such as Poundland. Larger bags of salt/grit can be used on the drive.

Christmas or sale shopping? Theatre trip or festive meal out?

Remember to make the house look as if it is occupied, leave a light on, music playing. Resist the temptation to announce the fact that you are away from home on social media. Don’t carry too many bags and make sure that you pick them all up when you move from one shop to the next. Keep your handbag shut and close, a small bell attached to a wallet or purse will ring if someone tries to take it. Never leave your bag unattended, look confident and avoid unlit streets.

Patio door security Do you have a sliding/rolling upvc patio door not upgraded to current British Standards? If so, an inexpensive interim way to increase the integrity of the door is to fit bolts available from stockists such as Wilkinsons. However, always get professional advice from a qualified locksmith to ensure that your locks and doors are up to the job. A robust burglar/trembler alarm on all types of patio doors is highly recommended.

Garden tool security Most of us have finished our major gardening projects for the year. Have you now stowed away your gardening equipment securely, hugely reducing the chance of an intruder using a left out tool to enter or cause damage to your home/property? Worth a check!

Garage security Local police are finding many home garages are left unlocked and consequently burglaries from garages have risen significantly. This also applies to sheds.

Keys, keys and keys!

If you are a victim of burglary it may be that the burglar(s) found spare keys inside your property to let themselves out. Spare keys should be made difficult for a burglar to find and if found and taken, all locks must be changed immediately. Never hide keys outside your property, burglars know all the places to look. If away, give a set of spare keys to a relative, friend, neighbour or minding company.

Manage Expectations

The festive season is known to be a difficult time for many individuals and for families as a whole. Financial pressure, relationships, to missing members of family around the dinner table.

The last time I saw my Dad alive was Christmas Day 2007 and thankfully that day ended with a lovely cuddle goodbye. My last one. My Dad passed away suddenly in the following February. Having not really appreciated Christmas before, ever since I am now a festive cheer leader and celebrate Christmas if anything to honour the empty chair.

Are you aiming for the glossy magazine styled perfect Christmas? Your holiday season joy cannot be measured against your friends and colleagues.

Know what your family and friends love and enjoy.

Be Realistic with your Budget For the majority there is no free reign on Christmas spending, so set an amount you are comfortable with.

Allocate for gifts, food, drink, parties, taxis, new outfits etc. By planning in advance shopping and partying will be much more enjoyable.

Create Experiences Remember the time spent on being creative with your gifts including wrapping is part of the joy.

Keep it Cool in the Kitchen With those veggies boiling on the stove, it won’t be long before the Brussels sprouts cause a stir! Preparation and planning of your Festive Feast is highly advised. Delegate and share tasks so you’re not tripping over each other in the kitchen and everyone feels like they have the opportunity to help.

Spare a Thought Being mindful at Christmas is the best way to enjoy the day and festive weeks. Find time to spare a thought and where you can help someone who might be finding the cold weather tough, or are missing loved ones. A gentle ramble through ancient villages & fens

Why not wile away 1.5 hours on this gentle 5.5 kilometre (3.4 miles) walk along lanes and footpaths? Starting in Glinton, the route takes in Peakirk before returning via the Maxey Cut high bank. N.B. There are some easy stiles to cross. Park in Glinton at The Green. Please don’t obstruct residents’ drives and gateways.

Both villages were recorded in The Domesday Book with Glinton having Iron Age and Roman remains found there. The spire of St Benedict’s Church is considered one of the finest needle spires in England, inspiring the peasant poet, John Clare, to pen a poem, ‘Glinton Church’, about it. Peakirk’s church was named for St. Pega, the sister of St Guthlac who founded the settlement of Crowland. She established a hermitage during the 8th century and the village was named for her: Peakirk means Pega’s Church.

6. If you wish, enter the churchyard to spend some time spotting old names recognizable from local businesses today and ponder over some very intriguing gravestones. Return to the lane, turning left to join Chestnut Close and pass the play area on your right. You are now following briefly the Car Dyke course. Go left at the junction with Mile Drove. 180m 9. National Space Centre The National Space Centre in Leicester is a bit of a trek from Deeping, but it is well worth a visit.

There is so much for children to do, even very little ones. Older children will enjoy the hands-on exhibits, while little ones will enjoy dressing up as astronauts or stars. There is a flight simulator, 360 theatre and Tranquillity Base – a series of tests where visitors can see whether they’d make the requirements to go into space! See more at www.spacecentre.co.uk.

Ten pin bowling Bowl a few frames at MFA Bowl in central Peterborough, where kids can bowl after school from 3pm – 6pm for £3.50 (including a drink). At AMF Bowling in Bretton, check online for special deals for families and kids.

Noteables present ‘American Songbook’ Market Deeping choir the Noteables will present their concert ‘American Songbook on Sat, 14 November, at St Guthlacs Church at 7.30 pm. The concert will include items from a range of American composers, including George and Ira Gershwin, Irving Berlin and Cole Porter, and some songs from well-known shows by Lerner and Loewe and Rodgers and Hammerstein. There will also be a number of solos in the programme, all reflecting the theme of popular songs from the USA. Formed in 2014, the Notaeables presented a concert of music and poetry in November 2014 as part of the World War I commemorations in the Deepings. The choir’s Musical Director is Sara Woolhouse, who has wide experience both as a musician and conductor of choral groups. Tickets £8.00 adults and £1 children to the age of 16. Market Deeping Christmas Market The day starts at 10am Sunday 29th November when Santa arrives on his sleigh and the market is declared open. As the festivities get into full swing a fun fair provides additional excitement for the children and there is a variety of food and drink for the whole family to enjoy. Grimethorpe Colliery Band Fresh from their success as winners of the 2015 British Open Brass Band Championship, Grimethorpe Band who will be celebrating their centenary in two years time will be kicking off Christmas in Deeping with their 27th performance here.
