A team of pupils from The Deepings School, The Butt Masters, fought off stiff competition to become the regional champions of the 2018 FIRST LEGO League staged by the Institute of Engineering & Technology. Competitors are encouraged to programme an autonomous robot to score points on a themed playing field (Robot Game) developing a solution to a problem they have identified (Project) all guided by FIRST LEGO Core Values. Hosted by Park Air in Market Deeping, the tournament around the theme of hydro dynamics was hard fought with 60 pupils from across Stamford, Bourne, The Deepings, Crowland and Peterborough competing. The Butt Masters now go forward to the UK and Ireland Final to be held at the University of the West of England on February 24th. Well done to all involved! 3

NEWS Local farmer Nicholas Watts MBE is making a gift of all his wildlife photography free online. He says, “This is a further practical way I can raise awareness of the importance of farming with wildlife and the environment in mind, plus more specifically the need for action to reverse the trend of declining songbird numbers. I also hope my work will inspire more people to take up photography.” The first batch of images from the collection are now available from The Vine House Farm website.

Lucy Tolson has supported the Little Princess Trust for few years now (she donated her hair 2 years ago and raised £250) and last December she did the same again. She had her Charity haircut at local hair salon Calitri’s in Market Deeping, by Heidi and raised over £230. The charity provide real hair wigs, free of charge to children suffering hair loss.

Things are getting very busy at Market Deeping Community Primary School. Not only is building work about to start but the staff are looking forward to building strong links with the community. Years 5 and 6 have visited the Houses of Parliament and held a debate. Years 1 and 2 are visiting local restaurants and holding their own pop up restaurant for parents and Reception are stargazing with Peterborough Astronomy Society. Further, the School is looking to those who work locally, volunteer or support community projects to present awards in Friday assemblies. The

Imperial Café There are some in the Deepings who still have memories of what the Market Place was like during the Second World War. They say that, apart from the shop signs and displays and a different style of traffic sign and, significantly, a lot fewer vehicles and people, there was not a lot of difference. They remember, though, that when darkness fell there were no friendly lights twinkling from behind curtains – the blackout put a stop to that. But every morning a Tilly Van (utility vehicle) would trundle through town taking a dozen WAAFs (Women’s Auxiliary Air Force) from their billet in a Nissan hut at Maxey House to the radar station at RAF Langtoft. At about that time John Eve would be on his milk round with his brown and white pony, Dolly, who would have her lunch from a nosebag outside The Imperial Café while John himself would nip into the Bull for lunch. Untethered, the pony would stay where she was left, quietly waiting for her master to return. The street was quiet, as all the shops would shut for lunch. Prior to the War, The Imperial Café at 13 Market Place (now The Square) had been a successful sweet shop, tea room and small hotel. But during the War the Air Ministry requisitioned the business run by Arthur Newton and his daughter, Joyce Holmes. Joyce had moved back from her marital home in Edenham when her husband, a bricklayer, had been called up in 1943: building had been a reserved occupation. A lorry delivered food to the café every day and Mr Newton prepared meals for RAF personnel from Wittering and the Radar Station at Langtoft. Accommodation was also supplied for the RAF and many pilots, ground staff and WAAFs would frequent the café. Senior RAF visitors to Wittering were brought to the Imperial Café, including Air Vice Marshall Dowding who dined there on more than one occasion. For many years Arthur Newton in garden with aviary 14

after the War ex-RAF, including some from the Canadian Air Force who had been billeted on the Newtons, would turn up to reminisce about the happy times during the War years. The Newtons’ tenure at 13 Market Place was a culmination of a love affair with Market Deeping which had started in 1914 when the young Catherine Garton (Kate), from a large farming family in Saltby, had come from Grantham to work in Garrett’s draper’s shop on the corner of Stamford Road, now the Beauty Retreat.

Catherine’s fiancé Arthur Newton was an engine fitter at Hornsby’s in Grantham but Catherine persuaded him to move to Market Deeping where they could run their own shop. Accordingly they married in 1916 in Market Deeping. Their wedding photo shows the wedding party posed in the archway of the Precinct, beside their sweetshop – which is now Sharman & Quinney. Here Catherine would also serve cups of tea if requested as in those days there was nowhere to have a cuppa! It was here that their daughter Joyce was born in 1918. After a couple of years, the Newtons, who wanted to open a tea room as well, moved into the premises across the road (it was Staceys Jewellers for many years after WWII, and is now Pkai Hairdressers). It was here that The Imperial Café was first established. Arthur’s brother, Jack, returning from Canada, came to live with the couple. He had amassed a nest egg while working on the trans-Canadian railway for ten years. In 1923 the Newtons moved again, this time to number 13, a large Victorian house next door to The Bull. The house had a long back garden and a field, in all 2.5 acres, which opened onto Godsey Lane (then known as Tinkers Lane) where there were then no houses at all but just open countryside. The purchase price for the property was £835 and was partly funded by Uncle Jack’s nest egg. The house had previously been Market Deeping’s chemist’s shop which had doubled up as the dentist’s. As late as the 1950s some old Deeping residents could recall lying on the floor of the little back room where the chemist put his knee on their chest and pulled out bad teeth! Mr Linnell was the chemist; he had bequeathed the property to his daughter and she now sold it on. continued >

FEATURE This building allowed the Newtons to achieve their dream of owning a small hotel as well as a café and sweet shop, and the board proudly bearing the name on the front of the house remained until the end of the 1960s. Some guests at the hotel were commercial travellers; they carried a suitcase of their firm’s products to obtain orders from retailers and they travelled round ‘their’ district by bus and train, there being no company cars in those days. One salesman boasted a luxuriant head of hair but caused Ethel, the longest serving maid, some astonishment when, on taking him his breakfast on a tray she beheld his luxuriant head of hair sitting on the bedpost and the owner sitting bolt upright in bed, she said, ‘as bald as a coot’! Leisure fishermen from the industrial Midlands would also stay sometimes with their wives; the Welland provided good fishing in the 1920s and 30s. Summer tennis party Catherine had been an asthmatic since her youth and in the run up to Christmas in 1936 she passed away aged just 53. Arthur carried on with the business until the 1960s when he was in his seventies, a quiet old-world character who never seemed to change. He always wore a suit and waistcoat and starched wing collars until they were unobtainable. At the back of the house was a lawn where Arthur created a shaded tea lawn beside box hedging and flower beds. An aviary was built where canaries and budgerigars were housed until the onset of the War when it became impossible to buy the seed needed to feed them. On the south side of the red brick stables, halfway down the garden, there was a large greenhouse housing grapevines with a peach tree beside it. Beyond, Mr Newton established a grass tennis court and throughout the 20s and 30s it became popular for groups of young people to hire the court and have tea served to them on the lawn beside it. However, due to the exigencies of war the grapevines were replaced by tomatoes, half the tennis court became a chicken run and the wooden tennis pavilion became a henhouse! Joyce’s daughter, Margaret, was born while her husband (also an Arthur, but Holmes!) was away in Wales, training with his battalion for the D-Day landings in Normandy and he was given a three-day leave to visit his wife and baby daughter. Arthur was a gunner in the Tank Corps. He was sent over to France in July 1944 and returned in the spring of 1946. The family settled at 13 Market Place and it was from here that he ran his building business until the 1970s. The café and hotel side of the business were terminated in 1947 but Mr Newton maintained the sweet shop until the mid-1960s. The greenhouse and stable building 16

The sweet shop was to the left of the front door while the tea room was to the right, now the snooker room. There were friezes of classical figures on the wall and two panels in the door of Flora and Pamona. Dorothea Price, in her book A Glimpse of the Past, remembers the shop as being immaculate, ‘cool and refined with the delicious smell of good quality chocolate. The sweets were all in jars on the shelves and counter and chocolates were loose in boxes so that everything was weighed out and usually sold in quarters. Boiled sweets were often 2d a quarter, better quality 4d a quarter. The shop was open 7 days a week from 7 am - 9.30pm except on Saturdays when it stayed open until 10.00 pm.’ Mr Newton was renowned for his ice cream, made in a wooden tub, inside of which there was a metal container surrounded by ice. The milk and powder went into the container which was churned by turning a handle for a long time. Refrigeration was unknown at this time and so Joyce was sent, by bus, to an ice house in Queen’s Street Peterborough three times a week to fetch ice back in a sack! The ice cream was sold in cornets or wafers or at the side of the shop where there were two small hinged tables where ice cream was served in silver dishes for six pence; this was considered to be the height of luxury. Lunches and teas were served in the café, soup, meat and vegetables and pudding with tea or coffee for half a crown. Hare’s Woodyard was next door, over the garden wall on the right hand side, behind the Bull, and it was a cheery sound to hear the men singing and hammering as they went about their work. The archway at the Bull was a right of way for vehicles belonging to The Imperial Café to get from the property out on to the street. The further part of the garden, the apple orchard and field were sold off in the early 1960s for the building of Bramley Road and Joyce’s husband built a bungalow for them to eventually retire to on Stamford Road. This was initially let out to Dr Heywood and later Dr Coleman and his family but after the death of Arthur Newton in 1974 the couple moved in themselves and The Imperial Café was sold and became a men’s outfitters with Mr Gordon at the helm. Jade & Rich trounce Harry & Meghan! When Prince Harry popped the question to Meghan Markle last year, the news reverberated around the globe. We soon knew that he had got down on bended knee and popped the question as the pair settled in for a cosy evening with a chicken roasting in the oven. When Deeping’s Jade Howes opened a gift from Rich Young last February little did she realise that the Prince was not only about to be trounced in the romantic proposals stakes but that he would share a wedding date with the local care worker! Rich (34) and Jade (27) were both single parents, Rich with three children – Roman (3), Corey (8) and Ruby (11) – and Jade with Liam (8) when they met online. Their first date was at the then Stone Loach, now the Square and was quickly followed by a meal at the Baskervilles in Baston where Jade had grown up. Rich, originally from Walsall near Birmingham, had moved to Stamford eleven years ago and he worked in the wines and spirits department at Morrisons. Now a labourer with QKS Home Improvements

in Stamford, he is completing a bricklaying apprenticeship at Stamford College. Jade is a Senior Care Assistant working with dementia patients and since mid-2017 has been working at Braeburn Lodge, Deeping St James, where she enjoys the homely atmosphere, having moved there from Abbey Court in Bourne. Rich and Jade quickly became an item and, not a man to let the grass grow under his feet, Rich decided that he would ask Jade to marry him. But how? An innovative idea came to him and soon Jade was pouring over the jigsaw that he had given her, placing the pieces of an early selfie that they had taken together and wondering why there appeared to be some pieces missing. When Jade turned round Rich was holding her engagement ring and the missing pieces of the puzzle which spelt out ‘Will you marry me?’ The rest, as they say, is history! When Prince Harry and Meghan announced the date for their wedding, the Stamford Mercury put out a plea for any local couples who would share the day! Family and friends have been pressed into action for the wedding entourage, including Roman as a page boy, Corey, Liam and family friend Jessie as ushers. Bridesmaids include Jade’s sister, Chloe, friend BillyJo Magee and Jade’s god-daughter Lily Johns, as well of course as Ruby. Completing the line-up is longtime friend of Rich, Matthew Compton as best man. The wedding venue was easy to select: the venue for the couple’s first meal together, the Baskervilles at Baston. Bride’s mother, Sharon Jackson’s cousin PJ will provide DJ services and a colour theme has already been decided. Sixty guests will attend the wedding ceremony at the hotel and the wedding breakfast and a further 40 will join the couple for the evening celebrations. Invitations have already been issued.

My only issue now is how I am going to get in and out of it in my wedding dress!’

Never too old for romance! Former Bourne man Arthur Gantert (86) hit the headlines when he married Dorothy (92) after a whirlwind romance in 1993. Shortly after their wedding Dorothy decided to sell the rare Tiffany brooch that had been given to her by her first husband – a Lieutenant Colonel in the Black Watch and later a Harley Street doctor – in the late 1940s, to wear at a New Year’s Eve Ball in the Royal Albert Hall. Her friend, Sheila Wyer was available to comment to the Lincs Free Press at the time and said ‘She is 92 and hasn’t any children and decided that there was no good hanging on to it. She intends most of the money to go to charity.’ Sheila added, “She was too afraid that she might lose the brooch and to wear it again and it has spent the last 40 years hidden away.” The couple had been friends for 68 years before they married seven months before his death in 1991.

Auctioneer Chris Richardson commented, ‘We’re delighted to be able to auction the brooch – it is unusual for jewellery of this quality to come up for sale outside London.’ On examining the brooch he went on to say, ‘It is a beautiful piece of jewellery. The quality of workmanship to make it look so lifelike is exceptional. It is wonderful condition considering its age.’ He went on “For the brooch to come with the original handmade velvet box is so rare that it adds to its value. It may not be in fashion but it is very collectable, particularly in America, and we have had a lot of interest from abroad.’ The brooch, modelled on the lady slipper orchid, is enamelled on gold encrusted with diamonds and emeralds. It is believed to have been made as part the centrepiece of Tiffany’s display at the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris. Of the 25 made only 15 are known to exist. continued >

At auction it set a then-record price of £52,000 for the Bourne Auction Rooms. Mr Richardson said, ‘The auction rooms were as busy as they have ever been in the 17 years that I have been running them.’ There was considerable interest from potential buyers in the United States and Europe. A woman from California was at the auction. Bidding started at £10,000 and it was sold in a couple of minutes. Sheila Wyer commented, ‘They took friends and family for a meal in Deeping on Saturday night to celebrate. They are very happy at the prices but have no big plans to celebrate.’ The local appetite for selling fine jewels at auction over recent years has not abated and in their October sale, Batemans sold items from the collection of Major General Arthur Hay DSO OBE, including the pictured stunning 1930’s Cartier Diamond Ear Clips which eventually sold to a phone bidder for £32,400, following up on the stunning result a few months ago when the golden Cadbury’s Conundrum Egg sold for £20,640 at Batemans.

RECIPE FOR MANGO MESS Prep Time: 10 mins Makes: 8 portions (approx) INGREDIENTS

METHOD

500ml double cream 200g tinned mango pulp 2 medium sized mangoes 2 tbsp of caster sugar 8 ready-made meringue nests (5x7cm)

Peel and dice fresh mangoes into 1cm pieces. In a large bowl, add the sugar to the cream and whip till soft peaks are formed. Roughly crush the meringues into the cream, add the mango pieces and fold together. Spoon 2 heaped tablespoons of the mixture into Martini glasses or dessert bowls. Drizzle with mango pulp on top as a dressing, Sprinkle with a little edible silver glitter and serve.

Mike wrote a blog while he was awayÂ We finished yessssss! 7th? Cannot believe it! We started her up this morning and the engine sounded like a bag of spannersâ&#x20AC;Ś no go in it at allâ&#x20AC;Ś Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m pretty sure all 3 of us thought we would be making it 17 breakdowns! But noooooâ&#x20AC;Ś my go pro stopped just after we were going through the finish line! đ&#x;&#x2DC;but we are here!Â A year ago when Stu mentioned the Rickshaw Challenge, stupidly I really didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think it was going to be too hard! A holiday even! How wrong I was! Day 2: Having broken the engine after just 20mins on the first day I could have cried when we faced the same thing againâ&#x20AC;Ś we supposedly had had a new head and piston fitted. Stayed in a transport cafe overnight, it smelt like plastic being burnt outside the door: the driverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s way to keep warm! Blankets covering the beds were not pleasant... a few roaches and lizards but at leastÂ they ate the bugs! Then seeing the Rickshaw move on the Wednesday we had been told Thursday...we were punching air! We got stitched up for the price of the engine andÂ then they tried it with the rooms...everyone there knew each other and we were the cash cows!... We refused to pay what they wanted but still paid more than we thought we should. The atmosphere was bad to say the least! We left as quickly as

we could.... then broke down after just 10mins with the same issue. This meant getting a lift back to find the mechanic at the truck stop... we were on our knees... I could have quite easily walked at this point! We later found outÂ others did after Day 1. As we went further SouthÂ people have so little but seem so happy and will help you all they can. We blew a tyre which was not a simple fixÂ and when we went to pay, they wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take anything but selfies and a hand shakeâ&#x20AC;Ś we were blown away by their generosity.đ&#x;&#x2DC; If (for us when!) the engine breaks, it will get fixedâ&#x20AC;Ś if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re in the middle of nowhere donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t worry India will find you! It may cost you a selfieâ&#x20AC;&#x201C; ok a lot of selfies â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but it will get sorted! The clutch went yesterday but as soon as we had opened the back someone came over and it was fixed in 10 mins. When we arrived in India the hand gel was out every 5 minutes, we didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t go near the street vendors; stayed away from the ice... weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve gone native!... now the hand gel is no more, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re using street vendorsÂ all day... last night we had the ice, .still all good! continued >

RICKSHAW CHALLENGE The trip has tested us! Three people in a Rick going for so long without seeing anyone else, it was trying at times! But we are here and unbelievably a day early! No sightseeing, just driving but at 35kmph you get to see a lot more! The driving is nuts but now we don’t blink at a bus coming towards us on the wrong side of the road on a dual carriageway... we have our force field! The mighty horn that protects! It does work!

From such a s*!t start, the friendliness of the people has blown us away and really turned it around!

Nick Brown, local postman with Columbian Camilla Perez Botero and niece Kelly Beeken as the ‘Dirty Dosas’ were also part of the challenge raising money and awareness of prostate cancer, and Nick wrote: It’s 530am and the call for prayer has just woken me up. I have one more day hopefully in the rickshaw about 5 hours driving. It’s been an emotional journey, quite exhausting at times, very challenging and an absolute eye opener! Some of the poverty has been horrendous. I’ve seen 2 dead people, numerous dogs, goats, and cows on the side of the road. The people are the nicest people you would want to meet until they get on the road, and then it’s like playing extreme Mario – cart or bumper cars; it’s as if they have a death wish. I’ve had curry every day and put on over half a stone but I did this to experience life and that’s what I’m definitely doing! I wanted to raise awareness of prostate cancer, and if one person gets checked or speaks to others about it then it’s been worthwhile. I lost my father-in-law and my friend Garmo to this.

Young people drive booming businesses in the Deepings, says entrepreneur Molly Clegg This year, Murano Silver was lucky enough to be invited to two business award ceremonies. Always fun and exciting events but this year something interesting occurred to me. Many of the nominees and winners were young people! At a time of the year when schools are starting to help pupils make decisions about their futures I thought it might be a great time to chat to some of these business people and see how they came to be where they are now. Over the last few years it has been, at times, easy to get caught up in the stories of empty high streets and statistics on lower rates of success of new start-ups. I know myself when I bought Murano Silver in 2013 a lot of people questioned my choice given the economic climate. To me it seems, though, that there is a positivity in the Deepings and perhaps this is what is inspiring young people to get involved. We’ve kept a lot of our independent shops, and local people are keen to support small businesses. At a time when some towns are struggling, ours is thriving and this is something worth talking about! On entering ‘Beauty by L&Co’ (Douglas Road) there is no hint at all that this is a brand new business. The ambience is perfect and the salon is fabulously furnished. Owners, Lucy Charley (left) and Amy of Inspire Dance and Lauren, greet each customer with relaxed confidence about the treatments on offer. It would be easy to believe that this busy salon had always been here but in fact it was opened early in 2017 when Lucy and Lauren were both 26 and later in the same year won ‘Best new Business’ at the Deepings Business Awards. As I imagine everyone starting a new business feels, there were always reservations but they had both worked locally as beauticians and already had a good client base. Nonetheless they say that they ‘couldn’t have ever imagined the support and success (they) have had in the first 11 months’ With all their exciting plans for 2018, it’s clear to see that there is still plenty more growth in Beauty by L&Co and I’m definitely excited to see the business continue to thrive! Another business at the awards was Inspire Dance. Nominated in the services to the community section they completely fitted this brief. I

had been aware of the school for a long time as it’s impossible not to spot their Inspire Dance hoodies and every year their dancers perform at the Christmas Market. Established seven years ago when Amy was 21, having left school at 16, Inspire Dance has gone from strength to strength, increasing the number of classes available and catering to a wider age range. This growth has given opportunity to other young business people. Charley started her business as a dance teacher when she was 18 and works across many schools, including Inspire. The responsibility of looking after a class full of children, keeping them interested, motivated and safe is no easy task, but experiencing one of her classes and seeing the seemingly effortless professionalism, you could almost start to believe it was!

The knowledge and qualifications needed to start a business might feel intimidating to some, but not these guys, where self motivation exists in abundance. Charley said: ‘Being in business was something I had always wanted to do so I spent a lot of time researching to make sure I was starting up correctly.’ The focus in Sixth Form is often on personal statements for UCAS and University as Lucy says, ‘there wasn’t much guidance if starting a business was the path you could see yourself taking,’

Airbandb for nesting birds with Will Bowell The 14th February is obviously an important day, where couples of the world show how much they love each other with expensive gifts, meals out and flowers. But how about showing our feathered friends a bit of love this Great Tit is just one species that will benefit from a nest box Valentineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day? with a small hole.

National Nest Box week is an event started by the British Trust for Ornithology with the aim of encouraging everyone to put up a nest box to help give birds a home in the spring.

BIRDS 14th-21st February

February is the perfect time of year to put up nest boxes as spring is just around the corner and birds will already be starting to prospect for suitable places to raise future broods.

What kind of Nest Box? There are many kinds of nest boxes you can build or buy to attract birds to make your home their home. Robins need open-fronted nest boxes preferably hidden away in ivy. Sparrows and tits need a nest box with a small hole in the front. Swifts use longer nest boxes placed under the eaves which starlings use as well. House martins, which build their nests out of mud, can also be attracted by placing an artificial cup type nest box under the eaves. You can even buy boxes to attract Tawny owls.

Why are Nest Boxes important? Many birds have become quite dependant on the environment we all live in and as old buildings are renovated, woodland habitat is lost and gardens are tidied up, birds lose a place to nest. That hole in your roof could be a place for a swift, For the more adventurous and those with bigger gardens, you can get nest starling or house boxes for Kestrels and Tawny Owls. sparrow to nest, not to mention bats as well. The large tree at the end of your garden could be home to tits, woodpeckers, pigeons or warblers.

Novelty nest boxes which come in all different shapes are best avoided, as in some circumstances they can actually be harmful to birds and at best wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be suitable nest sites. Nest boxes with metal lids get too hot on sunny days and metal and plastic boxes will both retain moisture, making the birds cold. Nest boxes should also always be positioned to avoid direct sunlight most of the day.

These habitat losses have contributed to the decline of many of our familiar garden species. Starlings and house sparrows may appear to be common but they are nowhere near as abundant as 30 years ago, partly because of our tidying up. Common Swifts are declining fast across Europe, with old houses being renovated being a key factor. These Swift boxes are the perfect alternative to having holes in your eaves.

Blue Tits are a familiar sight at nest boxes and will start prospecting for nest sites as early as December.

House Sparrows are another declining garden bird which needs an alternative to damaged eaves and multiple boxes near each other create a communal nesting place which this species thrives on.

Spreading the love... Suzi Parfrement Pollard shares the joy of her dog Gem Companionship, unconditional love and fun – just three of the attributes that come with the ownership of a dog or cat. In recent years the benefits that our pets can bring to the elderly or the very young have become increasingly well recognised and as a result a number of charities have been set up with the idea of bringing well behaved dogs into residential homes, hospitals, hospices, schools, day-care centres and prisons. One such is Pets as Therapy, set up in 1983 with the simple desire to allow inspiring and dedicated volunteers to share their time and pets with people in need. Local, Suzi Parfrement Pollard, the proud owner of 14 year old Spitz Klein Gemima, is one owner who has joined this movement to share the love of her dog for the benefit of others. Little ‘Gem’ as she is affectionately known, is a German breed, thought to be descended from the Nordic Samoyed and Lapphund, originally bred as guard dogs for royalty. Tiny in size, in a pack their yapping would alert larger dogs who would bring up the rearguard and provide formidable protection for their owners. Needless to say the now toothless and ageing Gem is a gentle and harmless ball of jet-black fluff and loved all the more for that. However, now living her days out in the Deepings with her adoring owner Suzi, Gem has not had an easy life herself. Suzi is in fact her third owner, providing a more stable home than she has hitherto enjoyed. So far so good but in recent years, late on one tumultuous evening she was stolen from her back garden, having been attracted beyond the gate by a whistle. The power of Facebook came to the fore and having alerted a largely sleeping community to her loss, Gem was remarkably found on the bypass at five in the morning – as she was spayed she was not good for breeding and without any teeth she would be no good for dog baiting either! Safely back at home her owner was to find that she had redundancy looming. Positively embracing a lifestyle change, Suzi decided to share the joy of her little dog and volunteer with Pets as Therapy; she has been visiting Braeburn Lodge in Deeping St James for over a year now.

A little princess loving being the centre of attention, Gem laps up the fuss and affection that is lavished on her by more active residents. But she is also on hand to visit those who are not as active as well and instinctively knows where to lie to allow a disabled person to pet her. Residents look forward to her visits and their faces visibly light up when she arrives. In order to be suitable for therapeutic visiting, dogs must demonstrate a quiet unflappable nature and be comfortable with petting and unexpected movements. Well controlled and quiet, they must undergo an inspection by a vet and of course must also be fully vaccinated. Animal-assisted interventions as part of an holistic approach to treatment does not stop with the elderly and it has also been found that literacy in children can be improved by developing their confidence, interest and enjoyment through the read2dogs scheme. The PAT dog is taken into the classroom, kept on a lead at all times. They are then introduced to the children with their name, breed and age and what they enjoy and the dog’s love of listening to stories (who doesn’t?) is explained. The child sitting on a cushion near to the dog is then encouraged to read to interact with the dog – maybe explaining parts that the dog would find ‘difficult’ to understand. The child becomes less stressed and less self-conscious and more confident as time goes on and gains lifelong skills which they may find otherwise difficult to achieve. Watching a film together at Stamford Arts Centre As you walk back to the car park at the top of St Leonards’ Street in Stamford past St Georges’ Church you are often in the company of other couples scurrying back home. The age of the buildings and the state of the cobbles suggest you could be at any point in a previous time. You will just have been enveloped in the atmosphere of the Georgian theatre first opened in 1768 which is now Stamford Arts Centre. The seats and ambiance are definitely evocative of an earlier time, the kiosk and coffee shop bear little or in fact no similarity to their more modern counterparts. But close your eyes and you are but a breath away from memories of other couples through history enjoying an evening out in each other’s company etched in the atmosphere - the film is almost secondary!

Dine out together The newly opened Driftwood Bistro provides an intimate fine dining experience. We were regulars when Rob was chef at The Waterton Arms and it is great to see he has maintained the same high standards. The deliberate strategy of concentrating on a few dishes combining excellent, locally sourced fresh ingredients means that you are served a special meal where every mouthful is full of flavour and texture. Rob and his partner have made excellent use of the space, turning it into a nice environment for a relaxed meal during the day or evening, where it’s easy to forget where you are. Service was also impeccable and although you currently need to bring your own alcohol, glasses and water are provided. Learn to Dance Can you bring extra romance through dancing? Yes, you can! Having had learning to dance on my bucket list it’s a wonderful feeling to be actually doing it. The last time we did something completely together was planning our wedding four years ago! It’s not all gazing into each other’s eyes. These weekly dance classes make us laugh, challenge us and have us both leaving feeling amazing; like we’ve really achieved something. We’re learning more about each other too; our patience, listening skills (laughs) and confidence. The romance for us is definitely sharing something together that’s just us and totally away from our usual daily life where we enjoy the shared smiles and the fun in every step we take together. If you are able to book a Sunday trip a few weeks in advance then you can also get an attractive price for your rail tickets.

Go out for Breakfast There are so many things to do together and one of the greatest pleasures is to take a leisurely drive and stroll for quality time over breakfast. Leave the washing up behind and let someone else spoil you together. In our pursuit of finding good places we have been refreshed in Deeping, Oundle, Little Casterton, Oakham and most recently a charming friendly place in Stamford, ‘Lamberts’. Stamford has many hidden treasures and the twitten that is Cheyne Lane hides the most delightful of them. Bright enough, fresh and positively has atmosphere with food that never fails to appeal, served by friendly efficient staff and cooked to perfection. Try the pancakes with fruit or as I did, with crispy smoked streaky bacon that just crunches into the maple syrup soaking that comes with a good pile of pancakes. My wife had poached eggs on toast and we both had more than one hot drink. Time to read the paper or, if you prefer you can always talk to each other! £14 for the two of us was a bargain I would say. Just sad that they are not open Sundays but then Sundays offer many other breakfast delights if you hunt around. David Milner Scudder

Deeping Gang Show Young people from the Deepings, Thurlby, Bourne and Stamford have been busily rehearsing for this year’s Deeping Gang Show since September. This will be the 33rd year the show has been staged in Deeping, at the Deeping School. It is a musical variety show staged by members of the Scout and Guide movement. Musical items based on Heroes, Glitz and Reggae have plenty of enthusiastic singing and choreography movements with lots of comedy by the youngsters thrown in, with some very funny sketches. It is great family entertainment from some very talented young people.
