Welcome As you get older and lets face it none of us are getting any younger as they say, you start to look to see who the batten is going to be passed onto! Well not to worry people of Deeping because there is a thriving younger community coming on behind. When Zoe Kornfeld heard of the Barnardos Big Toddle she rallied families on The Deepings Baby and Toddler Network for a Big Toddle around the Deeping Lakes - nine families and their toddlers enjoyed a Saturday morning at the Lakes and raised over £250 for the charity and they are all set to do it again! Meanwhile in the annual Lincs Free Press Education Awards, Sally Donaldson of the Deepings School (pictured second right) won the Contribution to the Community Award for the work she has done in setting up a jogging group as part of the Wellbeing at School initiative and in also helping to start the Don’t Lose Hope Charity Café in Bourne. These are just two examples but just look around and see the work that the sports

groups are doing, the young people at the Youth Group and in the Scouts, Guides and Army Cadets - there is a proliferation of wonderfulness coming on behind! Worry not! Judy Stevens 3

The Penningtons of Market Deeping

14

FEATURE The Penningtons were a part of the fast growing lower middle class that emerged during the latter part of the Victorian era and positively flourished in the Edwardian years before the First World War. While sharing the aspirations and values of the class above them, the lower middle-class was under constant pressure to differentiate itself from the working-classes and they sought to maintain the symbols of status against the constraints of economic reality - a scenario acted out perfectly by the Penningtons! Their social standing was encapsulated on the back of a slightly dog-eared postcard on the front of which are a series of faded pictures of Stamford and on the back in the loopy handwriting crafted by a fountain pen typical of the day, a message home to Mrs Pennington Market Deeping – no further address required. Mabel had signed herself simply ‘M’ and she had posted the card at 9.00pm on 31st August 1908 after her first day’s work back (from a short break at home) at the Post Office in Peterborough where she was a Telegraphist, one of the newly emerging jobs and where ‘they were all glad to see her back again’. Mabel was anxious that her younger sister Marjorie had got home safely and promised to write again in a day or two.

Miss Dorothy Pennington teaching at Basingstoke Hampshire, later at the Cross School, DSJ

Mrs Amy Pennington

Her father Mark (known as Fred) Pennington was the son of a wool merchant in Bradford but at the age of 20 in 1881 had become a farm pupil at Stainfield near Hacconby, eventually farming at Kates Bridge. After a move back to Manningham, Bradford, and work as a wool warehouseman, he returned to Kates Bridge in 1896 with his wife Amy, where he had successfully applied for the job as a Relieving Officer for the Deeping and Castle Bytham District, chosen above 70 other applicants because of his extensive knowledge of the area. The

position was one in which he was charged by the parishes to offer relief to the poor in an area comprised of 16 parishes, an area of 29,800 acres and a population of 7,086. While the position was one of not inconsiderable status he was not well endowed with funds and in 1900 wrote to the Bourne Board of Guardians and asked for an increase in salary as he had lost his pony; he was duly granted five shillings a year for the hire of a horse. The family moved to Towngate, Market Deeping in 1901 in the house next door to the old Union workhouse. He continued to request increases in salary; sometimes he was successful, in 1913 receiving £10 a year, a year later £8 towards the cost of a bicycle. However in 1915 the Bourne Guardians did not respond positively to his request as he received £135 pa and it was said the most he worked was four days a week and this wasn’t ‘sweaty’ labour. With three daughters and wedding costs traditionally met by the father of the bride, it may have been with a weather-eye to these that Fred requested more funds. Maybe as a canny career move in 1902 he was baptised at St Guthlac’s Church which enabled him to become a Freemason. Two years later on the death of Mrs Shelton, herself from a family of pre-eminent freemasons, he took over as Registrar and moved the family to the Market Place. Fred Pennington’s job was largely to keep the poor in line. In 1901 he appeared at Bourne Petty Sessions as a School Attendance Officer where Cornelius Seymour, Richard Beecroft, Gertrude Richardson of Castle Bytham and Isaac Gay of Langtoft were each fined two and sixpence for keeping their children away from school. In 1904 Fred was at Bourne Petty Sessions again, this time with Henry Clayton of Deeping St James and Joseph Stanton of Baston for failing to have their children vaccinated against cholera, for which they were both continued >

15

FEATURE fined £1 and 2 shillings costs. When Martha Ingram of Market Deeping was moved to Kesteven Asylum in 1907 and became chargeable on the Bourne Board of Governors it was Fred Pennington who was appointed as receiver. He rented her house out and sold her furniture so that the costs of twenty seven shillings and six pence could be paid to the Asylum for her keep. In 1908 John Wilson of Market Deeping was summoned for the maintenance of his father at Bourne Union workhouse. Wilson, as a single man in regular work, could pay two shillings a week, argued Fred Pennington. The defendant offered one shilling a week and this smaller sum was accepted by the bench. Two of Fred’s daughters married, the first Mabel (author of the postcard) to William Edis at what was described as a very pretty wedding at St Guthlac’s Church in August 1911. Both partners worked for the Post Office and their wedding presents included a white Fred Pennington tea service from the telegraph staff in Peterborough. The bride’s dress was of cream eolienne with satin stripe and trimmed with embroidery silk, as was the wreath and veil. The bridesmaids, Marjorie and Dorothy, sisters of the bride, wore dresses of white embroidered muslin coupled with white muslin hats trimmed with Valenciennes lace and dahlias. The bride carried a sheaf of lilies and the bridesmaids pink carnations. Marjorie Pennington The bridegroom’s brother, Newell, was best man and Mr Brice of Stanground played the organ while the Rev. P.O. Ashby (rector) officiated over a large congregation. After a honeymoon in Aberystwyth the couple set up at home at 40 High Street, Old Fletton, where William worked in the Post Office as a sorting clerk and telegraphist. Four years later Dorothy, a school teacher, married one of two Post Office employees who had lodged with her parents, Bert Dowby from Dersingham, Norfolk. The wedding again took place at St Guthlacs presided over by Rev Canon Ashby. This time the bride was attired more frugally than her sister in a dress of blue gabardine with a cream hat. Mabel’s daughter was bridesmaid and the best man was Percy Taylor of the Central Telegraph Service who had, with the groom, served for three and a half years in France during the War with the Royal Engineers. After a honeymoon in Folkestone the couple made their home in Whittlesey. 16

Mabel’s wedding

In 1921 at the age of 60, Fred Pennington retired after 25 years’ service, although he kept on his job as Relieving Officer for the Deepings until a replacement was found and he was still working for the Bourne Union in 1927. The job of Registrar remained in the family, his wife Amy taking over the role in 1922 after serving as Deputy under Fred. Fred then indulged his hobby playing bowls with the Market Deeping Bowling Club who met regularly on the bowling green at back of the Three Tuns Pub on the High Street. In 1923 Fred became a committee member. According to newspaper reports the team won most of their matches, though there was intense rivalry with Crowland who also had a good team. In 1930 Amy too retired, handing on the reigns of Registrar to the couple’s youngest daughter Marjorie who had been serving as Deputy. An accomplished Telegraphist, Marjorie sat the open competition for the Telegraph Civil Service and gained first class honours when she was just 18. In 1931 she was elected to the committee of the Deeping Nursing Association while she was working as a Manager/Clerk at Sharpe & Wade Solicitors at the offices where the Police Station now stands. Fred died in November 1934, a staunch Conservative, prominent Freemason and sidesman at St Guthlac’s Church. Amy and Marjorie continued to live in the High Street until Amy passed away in 1940. Marjorie remained as Registrar but on her retirement moved to Letchworth to be near Dorothy and Bertie, and she died there at the age of 88 in 1984, leaving an not inconsiderable sum in her will. And so came to an end the era of the Penningtons of Market Deeping. Research: Joy Baxter, Elizabeth O’Reilly Pictures: Elizabeth O’Reilly

Brandon Mattless

puts the Deepings on the map When asked what sort of pets did you have when you were a boy, the expected answer was not a Bahamas fiddler crab! But then Brandon Mattless is not an everyday kind of a guy! He is a guy who likes nothing better than helping a seven-year-old child to construct a jam sandwich out of paper and who has made the mantra of his life ‘Do what you love to do.’ So not for Brandon the mundanity of the nine to five – he has relentlessly pursued his dream, which is often cutting out shapes from magazines and creating the collages from which he designs greeting cards, illustrates books and produces maps such as the one of the Deepings which graces the front cover of this the August 2019 edition of I’d Rather be in Deeping. Maps resonate with Brandon, not least because he spent many happy hours poring over them in his hometown museum in Wisbech. He is an inveterate collector of photographs and maps and has spent a lot of time interviewing older people. ‘Marrying up images and words about the past is a joyful experience for me,’ he explains ‘and then being able to manipulate those images in a digital age is infinitely interesting.’ A map is a place at a moment in time and the changes that occur over a period of time are perfectly illustrated with a map. 18

With illustrative maps of Norwich and Wisbech already under his belt, Brandon was the natural choice when I’d rather be in Deeping magazine decided that they would like to mark their 50 issues of the magazine with a commemorative map. On a drive around the area he was mesmerised by the beauty of the Deeping Lakes, impressed with the stature of the handsome stone buildings and entranced by the river as it wends its way towards Crowland and the Wash beyond. He has produced a map which places the Deepings at a moment in time and it is hoped it will capture the imagination of our readers as it has done ours.

illustration for three years, graduating with a degree two years ago. Subsequently he built up a portfolio, covered maternity leave for a year at Hallmark Cards, worked as a freelancer and is now working for a children’s book publisher in Kings Lynn.

To do this he has used a technique he has perfected of using scanned textures digitally collaged, retaining the rough edges and the ‘homemade’ appeal of the collages he has cut and pasted. Quite unique, this is the kind of work that Brandon most loves because it easily connects with the subject depicted and the viewer of the image. It is this interaction and spontaneity that Brandon most loves about the technique.

And when not at work? Well, Brandon loves nothing more than camping on the North Norfolk coast, cooking in the open air on one burner, walking in the woods and admiring other people’s dogs. But if life had turned out differently, Brandon would have trained to be a magician – he claims to be a secret magician now, and he loves sharing his card tricks with others. There is magic in his art too – sharing his vision and helping others to interpret their world.. Oh, and building a jam sandwich with paper!

Brandon is a perfect example of a student for whom A levels did not seem to be the answer but instead he followed his dream, studied Graphic Design for two years at The College of West Anglia followed by a foundation arts and design course. He went on to the University of Arts in Norwich where he studied

And every day you can be sure that Brandon is working at a job that he loves, the building blocks of which were built as a child. He and his brother and sister were encouraged to draw, and on rainy days a big cardboard box full of yoghurt tubs, toilet rolls and cardboard was dragged out and whole towns of make-believe were constructed in a way that embedded themselves on the consciousness of these three siblings. They have all found a place in the creative arts; brother Cameron as an actor and sister Harmonie as a dancer.

Luring overseas visitors to discover the district’s ‘Englishness’

EXPLORERS ROAD

‘We have worked with some of our major visitor sites, such as Burghley and Grimsthorpe Castle, but the idea is to flag up just how much there is to see and do right across South Kesteven.

South Kesteven is now part of an exciting new touring route tracing Britain’s iconic Great North Road. Discover South Kesteven is a partner in The Explorer’s Road, encouraging visitors to discover the ‘Englishness’ that the district is so proud of.

‘We have the most amazing heritage, from The Deepings’ beautiful stone houses and villages to Stamford’s Georgian charms, castles, craft centres, historic hostelries and amazing, sometimes quirky, places to stay.

For 2,000 years the English have travelled a highway which connects north to south along a 500km route through the historic and cultural heart of the nation. Now travel agencies across the world can access smaller visitor sites and accommodation providers between London and Berwick on Tweed thanks to new software created specially for the £1.4m Discover England project, aimed at overseas visitors. Grimsthorpe Castle ‘South Kesteven, together with Rutland, is one of the key areas boasting the quintessential Englishness that visitors are seeking,’ said Andrew Norman, Head of Visitor Economy for InvestSK, South Kesteven District Council’s economic growth and regeneration company.

‘We are confident that people looking at the Explorer’s Road map and using it as a guide will be tempted to stay longer and come back. The original project was focused on the German market, but there is interest now from America, China and Australia. ‘It’s proving to be of great interest and we will be working hard with partners all along the route to ensure that the interest grows. We will have a new generation of explorers.’

Stamford along the river bridge

The route opens up South Kesteven’s range of accommodation, from traditional coaching inns and cosy bed and breakfasts to pubs with rooms and country house hotels.

Easton Walled Gardens ‘We are delighted to be part of this new project,’ he said. ‘Nine visitor businesses have signed up, but it raises the profile of the whole district as being a fascinating place to visit. ‘The Explorer’s Road is about putting otherwise-hidden places on the map. Not only does it allow overseas agencies to book clients´ holidays in advance, but also offers British travellers a new way to look at the A1 corridor and the great places that lie alongside.

Partners in The Explorer’s Road are Grimsthorpe Castle, Belvoir Castle, The Bull at Rippingale, Easton Walled Gardens, Stamford Town Tours (working with Stamford Town Hall), Burghley House, Grantham Museum, Belton House and Grantham’s Angel and Royal Hotel. www.theexplorersroad.com 27

The Ranch is open!

The Wild West comes to Towngate East A ranch themed restaurant/takeaway supplied by a state of the art stainless steel kitchen from Peterborough firm, Caterfix is staffed by Shaney as cook/manager ably assisted by Yvonne. Rustic tables and benches extend the ambiance and care has been taken to ensure that takeaway boxes are recyclable and cutlery is wooden, no single use plastic where it can be avoided here! And while you eat? You can watch as the bowling alley lights up with images such as piano keys as the ball makes its way down towards the skittles.

The Deepings Caravan Park has opened an exciting new Leisure Centre with two interactive bowling alleys the first of their kind in the country! A stunning mural by artist J.C Harper has recreated the wild west on Towngate East! Carefully chosen accessories such as the buffalo horn light fixtures, a life size horse created from driftwood and buffalo footstools all contrive to make the experience at the Ranch as authentic as it possibly could be! A chance reading of a small ad in a national paper promoting a European Community Grant by owner Darren’s mum has resulted in a 40% grant for this impressive £750,000 installation - an initiative to create jobs (10 additional staff are planned) and to promote tourism in this Fenland region. And boy has this family run business of 17 years standing risen to the challenge! Parents Belinda and Darren with their three children Rhys, Shanie and Jude along with a cast of skilled workmen headed up by Carl Fortnum have in less than a year produced a second to none leisure facility.

There are arcade games and pool tables and for children a soft play area - catering for all members of the family whatever their age! Outside a multi use games area (MUGA) has been constructed to allow for games of football, basket ball and tennis. There is crazy golf, an imaginative childrens play area on a soft but hardwearing surface constructed from recycled tyres. Dinosaurs loom! In short no stone has been left unturned in sourcing a leisure centre to perfectly supplement the facilities for permanent residents of the Caravan Park and for those who camp and bring touring caravans to the Park. Now there are six glamping pods with under floor heating, double beds, TV, microwave and kettle and airbeds to accommodate two children. At just ÂŁ35 per night with a minimum stay of two nights , three at bank holidays this is the ideal answer to accommodating guests in the area!

A midsummer evening’s circular river walk around Deeping St James & Gate, Northborough & Peakirk

WALKS

with Ann & Paul Taylor

Distance about 5 ½ miles. Time taken just over 2 hours. Drinks at The Pack Horse and The Waterton Arms. This is a circular walk so you can start where you want. We started at The Cross 1 near DSJ Priory Church. Walk along Church Street heading for the pedestrian bridge over The Welland. Notice the blue plaques at the Laundry and the Institute as you pass. Cross the river and turn right into Deeping Gate, then cross over the road and look for the seat 2 on Deeping Gate Road, where you turn right. Follow this track to the old Lincoln Road. There are sloe bushes here for autumn gin! Turn left and at the end, cross over and continue passing The Pack Horse 3 , which although only a third of the way along, is your only pit stop until the end (unless you deviate into Peakirk to the Ruddy Duck). Turn left into Church Street Northborough, along the chocolate box row of thatched cottages, seeing St Andrew’s Church which has strong connections to Oliver Cromwell’s family, as you pass. Past the Pingle Road end (Pingle meaning enclosure apparently) and carry on to Pasture Lane, where opposite is the beautiful Paradise Lane. 4 Follow this lane to the path along the field edge, turning left at the Maxey Cut. Carry along the bank to the Peakirk Road, over the stile and busy road and then along bank again.

The Northern Footpath Forum, whose aim is to ‘link the villages on the south Welland side with Deeping Lakes and DSJ on the north’ have made this next section of the walk possible through their hard work and tenacity. Their pièce de resistance, a footbridge over the Welland near the level crossing, is slowly becoming reality. The (axial flow!) pumping station 5 at the end of the bank is characteristic of the Fen specific machinery (overseen by the Welland and Deepings Internal Drainage Board in south Lincolnshire) and there is an interesting display board here. Turn left, and then right over the footbridge, following the path alongside the railway line. Then left at the top of the bank where you will find a handy seat and information board. Over the stile and past Mum, Dad and the foal, who will totally ignore you if continued >

29

you ignore them. Over the next stile and follow the shorter grass along the river bank heading towards Low Locks 6 . Watch out for herons taking off as you approach. Cross the Welland at Low Locks and follow the path back to Eastgate, where you turn left to get back to where you started. By which time you will want a refreshing drink at The Waterton Arms close by, which beckons you at the end of your journey!

We can accommodate most motorhomes for services & MOT OPENING TIMES: Mon- Fri 7.30am - 5.00pm and Sat 8.00am - 11.00 am 30

Stamford Auction Rooms Ltd Probate Services We work with probate Solicitors and Executors to provide valuations for accurate calculation of inheritance tax liability. These can be the basis for the fair division of an estate items amongst beneficiaries and/or the eventual sale at auction of any surplus antiques, works of art and other house contents. We arrange full or part house & estate clearances. Valuations for sale Free valuations are offered Monday - Friday 10am4pm or by private appointment. Alternatively you may email us your inquiry. Valuations are given for items of Asian Art, Books, Coins, Medals, Stamps, Decorative Arts, European Ceramics, Furniture, Works of Art, Jewellery, Militaria’Paintings, Silver, Toys, Watches and much more. For larger collections we can visit clients at home and do not charge for this service.

House and Estate Clearances A part or full house clearance can often be required for a number of reasons, perhaps owing to downsizing or following bereavement. Our comprehensive service aims to take the stress out of this. We do not ‘cherry pick’ items, we prefer to handle the whole clearance ourselves. The more valuable items will be sold in specialist auctions, whereas more general items of furniture & works of art will be included in our monthly Country & General auctions. All that cannot be sold is given to charity or wherever possible recycled. We work for you as agents so we do not buy anything. In a constantly evolving collectables market, you may just have a hidden gem waiting to be found, which wouldn’t necessarily come to light if the contents were sold to another clearance firm.

Insurance Valuations It is very important that your home insurance is sufficient to cover any valuable items you own. Our insurance valuations can assist you in reducing your insurance premiums. All valuations are carried out with the utmost discretion, each one is tailored to the individual client’s specific requirements and can include digital photographs upon request. We can provide for single items or major house contents. Our professional fees for written valuations are calculated on an hourly basis and are very competitive.

THE GOOD LIFE PT 2

Spring & Early Summer at the allotment with Dave Turner

Well, nobody said this allotment gardening would be easy. The first couple of weeks involved clearing the site of a skip full of rubbish including old carpet that had been placed under the soil in order to keep down weeds. Thankfully Olwyn’s brother-in-law brought his rotovator which saved hours of back-breaking digging. The site was then divided into four quadrants and paths laid in between, using any timber we could get hold of and filling with shredded bark; the reason for this was that it is easier to keep a check of what was grown where so we can then rotate the crops each year. Early potatoes were planted in the first week of April followed by beetroot, carrots, broad beans and peas. Having a greenhouse at home enabled us to start some plants off early and plant outside when I considered it warm enough… first mistake: my runner beans

looked so healthy so out they went into the allotment in early May only for a very late and severe frost to kill them stone dead. More potatoes mid-season and main crop were planted in late May but due to the very dry weather things were looking very sorry for themselves, the leeks looked like thin pencils and the potatoes were slow in poking their heads above the soil, but then in June we had the monsoon rains all us gardeners had been praying for but it so happened that we had gone on holiday to France for two weeks! When we returned the allotment looked fantastic, potatoes were three to four foot high, beetroot was growing rapidly and our first produce – several sticks of rhubarb – was harvested. Not long after our first beetroot was picked as was a lovely couple of crisp lettuce and radish. Our first new potatoes were picked in mid June and all seemed well with the world. Not so, as suddenly my allotment seemed to have become the favourite

feeding ground of every pigeon in South Lincolnshire. We lost our entire pea crop as well as cauliflowers, broccoli and cabbage. Hurriedly everything was covered in as much netting as we could scrounge. Thankfully that does seem to have kept them out and we are now harvesting vegetables on a daily basis. Believe me, there is nothing to beat the taste of freshly dug and cooked new potatoes with a sprig of fresh mint or a fresh crisp lettuce, not one wrapped in plastic and transported 1500 miles from Spain! We are now into mid summer and all the planting has been done. For the next few months we hope to enjoy the fruits of our labour – just so long as those pesky pigeons don’t learn how to get under the netting!

Five great

North Norfolk nuggets We are fortunate to be about 90-minutes’ drive away from all the varied delights that North Norfolk has to offer – on the coast and inland – ideal for a day out, weekend break or longer holiday stay. Here, David Brown presents a handful of favourites that keeps him returning to the county.

Gone to market Walking around some of the lovely North Norfolk villages you will find houses with larger than usual windows that often signify their previous existence as retail premises. Some communities retain a convenience store, but others are less fortunate. Perhaps that is one reason why Farmers’ Markets are so popular in the area? There are several to choose from – including Creake Abbey, Fakenham, Sandringham and Weybourne. A personal choice is the Docking Local Produce Market held on a Wednesday morning in the Dr W. E. Ripper Hall in the village’s High Street (PE31 8NG). Here you will find plenty of local grown and sourced flowers and produce, plus handmade The name on the stall is “Peggy Little’s” but that is craft items to choose from in a convivial atmosphere, proprietor Carol’s tribute to her talented mum, whose recipes for jams and other items continue to inspire her complete with a well-stocked cafe. Not far away at and hercustomers. Dalegate Market (PE31 8FB), by the A149 coast road at Burnham Deepdale, there are beach-hut style pop-up craft stalls in the courtyard that change on a weekly basis. They also host popular Spring and Christmas Market weekend events. Websites: dockingvillagehall.com, www.dalegatemarket.co.uk

Food for thought

Put your best foot forward

You are unlikely to starve on a visit to North Norfolk as there are so many cafes, restaurants and takeaways to choose from, whether you are looking for a seaside snack or a top-class restaurant dining experience. A handy place to call in at is The Granary by the A149 junction at Beach Road, Snettisham (PE31 7QU), where When faced with the choice of what’s on offer at The Coffee Pot at The The Coffee Pot has a tempting array Granary, Snettisham, resistance is futile – and that’s before you study the menu! of savoury and sweet items on the counter. Further options include afternoon tea and Sunday lunch. Like so many North Norfolk eateries, they are dog friendly. There are crafts and gifts on offer on the ground level too, while upstairs is a wide array of antiques and collectables from furniture to toys at all price levels to browse through. Stock tends to change-over quickly here so return visits are advisable to check for different curios. Until May 1969, trains between King’s Lynn and Hunstanton passed by the site when calling at Snettisham station. The Granary can be glimpsed in the 1962 British Transport Film John Betjeman Goes by Train, as presented as part of this year’s Deepings Literary Festival programme.

The wonderful North Norfolk Coastal Path is ideal if you want to discover quiet beaches and marshland away from the crowds, enjoying the open vistas and unrivalled wildlife that brings bird watchers back year after year to spot rare visitors. You can walk all the way from Hunstanton to Hopton on Sea The author’s camper van posed by the Old Coal Barn, Thornham – there are several Norfolk-based companies who if you are up to it, but fortunately will hire you a VW camper if you want to try one out. for most of us there are several shorter stretches ideal for a few hours strolling and exploration. Turning off the A149 at Thornham – and ignoring for now the delights of The Lifeboat Inn (work up a thirst first!) – proceed cautiously along the narrow and uneven Staithe Lane. The Old Coal Barn is a well-known landmark, having featured in numerous paintings and photographs, a reminder of the time when trading boats navigated the network of creeks. Just beyond here is a small car park that allows you to access the path across the marshes towards the nature reserves at Holme and the Norfolk Wildlife Trust Centre. Please keep your dogs under control at all times

All’s well next the sea The town of Wells-next-theSea has achieved the status of being a very popular place to visit at all times of the year – and that’s not surprising as it has so much to offer. Its quayside still has a working The quayside at Wells next the Sea manages a great mix of working port atmosphere and traditional seaside leisure activities in a compact setting. section for fishing boats and those pots aren’t props! Elsewhere families will be busy ‘crabbing’, trying to induce crabs to take their bait hung over the side of the quay and into the water below. Further character is provided by the presence of the Dutch sailing barge, Albatros, which once worked in and out of Wells and now offers drinks, food, accommodation and entertainment. It’s a worthwhile mile-long bracing walk out towards the sea – or you can catch a miniature train if you prefer. The town enjoys a rich choice of exhibitions and presentations at the splendid Wells Maltings in Staithe Street, and the town’s streets are well worth exploring, including the attractive Buttlands square lined by trees and Georgian houses. For browsers, the Old Railway Station is a second-hand book emporium and pottery, while nearby is the Antiques Centre. For further reading, Crossing the Bar – Tales of Wells Harbour by Robert Smith MBE, Harbour Master, offers great insight. Website:www.wellsharbour.co.uk

Transport of delight It is a sobering thought that until the end of February 1959, you could have caught a train from Bourne railway station that would have taken you across Norfolk to its East Coast resorts. If you’d changed at Melton Constable you could have caught a train via Holt to Sheringham and Cromer. Thanks to the efforts of the North Norfolk Railway, supported by the M&GN Joint Railway Society, we can enjoy a five-mile heritage train ride between Sheringham and the outskirts of Holt today, which offers splendid views of the coast and heathland scenery. Climbing on-board one of the well-presented preserved coaches on a train hauled by a veteran steam or diesel locomotive will bring back many memories for many and impress new generations. It’s worthwhile breaking your journey at Weybourne station, where trains on the single-line often cross paths, which has been seen in many film and TV programmes including Dad’s Army. Another great train journey, but on a smaller gauge light railway, will transport you in rural splendour between Wells and Walsingham. Websites:www.nnrailway.co.uk, www.wwlr.co.uk

A LITERARY FESTIVAL SUMMER READ The Stone Circle is possibly enhanced by knowing a bit about the Ruth Galloway books, but coming to it without having read anything else by Elly Griffiths wouldn’t matter at all because past histories for the characters are slipped naturally into the writing. Elly Griffiths has a smooth, sophisticated and completely accessible style so that The Stone Circle can be read as a complete stand alone despite being part of a series. The plot to The Stone Circle is so captivating because it is entirely plausible and yet still takes the reader by surprise. Part of the joy in this is the almost deadpan manner in which major events are sometimes revealed and the wonderful touches of humour. There’s an undercurrent of mysticism too

that it is only ever a suggestion that can usually be explained but still manages to be entirely beguiling. The misty, superstitious Norfolk setting adds to this atmosphere, as past and present times echo and reverberate through the story. Despite being an entirely engrossing narrative, it is the characters who make Linda Hill (left) with Elly Griffiths Elly Griffiths such a pleasure to read. at the Deepings Literary Festival 2019 The people in The Stone Circle are so human and real with their flaws, their desires and It’s hard to pin down the captivating quality of Elly the messy realities of their lives that reading about Griffiths’ writing in The Stone Circle. The writing them makes the reader want to meet them and to is accessible, the plot is wonderful, the setting vivid be part of the action with them. Dr Ruth Galloway and the characters completely believable and yet is a wonderful almost anti-heroine and all the more somehow those elements add up attractive for that. She lives in splendid geographical to something greater than their isolation and the way in which she is presented almost sum should be. Elly Griffiths has at a tangent to the main action in The Stone Circle, a magic touch in this Dr Ruth and yet is still absolutely necessary to the plot, is just Galloway series repeated in The perfect. Stone Circle. It is another winner.
