Re-Wool

in diverse and unpredictable weather.

The bulk of Fjällräven’s wool is traceable. It comes via The New Zealand Merino Company and holds the zq certification. zq ensures the wool, from hand-selected farms in Australia and New Zealand, is traceable down to a collection of approved farms where the sheep graze. These farms are certified according to a number of criteria: animal welfare (based on the un’s Five Freedoms of Animals); wool fibre quality; and environmental, social and economic sustainability. Inspections of the farms take place every third year and are carried out by an independent third party. Ethically, environmentally and functionally, zq wool is truly outstanding wool. Recovered wool repurposes discarded wool that would have been burned or gone to landfill. A by-product of the meat industry, it is mulesing-free surplus wool from sheep farmers’ seasonal shearing. Carefully selected, and refined into a high-quality material, recovered wool is used in two main ways: as an insulating fill material in jackets like the Keb Wool Padded Jacket and as a hard-pressed material for the innovative backplate on the Lappland Hike 15 Backpack. Recycled wool is known as Re-Wool at Fjällräven. Defined as spill wool, it comes from both pre- and post-consumer sources across the globe. Manufactured for Fjällräven in Italy, it is coloursorted, shredded and respun to make new garments and gear. The result is a richly coloured yarn that is mixed with polyester or polyamide to give products like Re-Wool jackets, shirts and Kånkens extra strength and appealing colour nuances. goal is to ensure that all the wool they use is either recycled, recovered, or traceable, certified, and audited. They have made significant progress towards this goal and are proud to say that they are very close to reaching it. However, they never settle for good enough and are constantly pushing for improvement.

Wool has been a staple material in the outdoor industry for years, known for its ability to keep you warm when it's cold and cool when it's hot. But at Fjällräven, wool is more than just a functional material. It's a crucial part of Fjällräven’s commitment to sustainability and traceability.

According to Erik Blomberg, Head of Innovation at Fjällräven, "Our customers want to know where the materials and the products are coming from and how they have been produced. It is an important development. Together, we can work towards inspiring others to see a high value in the products created from wool - and ensure we take care of them and use them over a long period of time."

In recent years, Fjällräven has also been exploring new ways to use wool beyond traditional sweaters and base layers. The backplate on their Lappland Hike 15 Backpack and the wool padding in their Keb Padded Jacket are both made from recovered wool. The Övik Re-Wool Shirt is made from tightly woven recycled wool. These are just a few examples of the many possibilities of wool as a material.

Fjällräven's commitment to wool doesn't stop there. They have partnered with The New Zealand Merino Company, who are launching a program on regenerative agriculture called zqrx. It builds on the strict criteria on animal welfare and the environment for the zq wool and focuses on regenerative aspects to highlight farming practices that go beyond the current zq structure. With zqrx, The New Zealand Merino Company has created a way to measure progress over time, another step towards a more sustainable future.

Fjällräven is excited about the future of wool and woollen products. They know that the clothing we choose to wear every day has an enormous impact on our planet and its people and they are determined to make a positive impact. With their commitment to sustainability and traceability, Fjällräven is leading the way in the outdoor industry and showing that wool is more than just a functional material, it's a material with a bright future, and the opportunities in New Zealand and the Australian regions are exciting!
