SOFT HOUSE Introduction The case study selected is Soft House designed

by Kennedy & Violich Architecture from Boston.

Located at the southern edge of Wilhelmsburg, the soft house is a set of all-wood row house dwellings that offers a new model for carbon negative architecture that can be personalized by homeowners to meet changing needs.

Reasoning The idea of the craft synthesis is based on “Redirection Motion into Idea” As a continuation of the project, the facade design intended on how nature elements such as sunlight, wind movement can be translated into image that can trigger human senses in a form of sound and light/shadow while being a self-sustainable system.

The idea extracted from the grammar of ornamentation is morphing nature elements into innovative idea.

The key to trigger this is through interaction between user and the facade, just like children playing with toy.

Extrating interweaving patterns by interlaying weaving lines.

The patterns is recreated in a piece of mock up origami to test how the pattern can work together with the structure to create movement.

Temperature is low, the spring is deformed and the panels folded naturally to smallest area maximize viiew, light and wind into the building

As temperature go higher, the spring contract and area of shading expand while wind are still accessible from the pockets created.

As the orientation of the sun changes, the shape memory alloy spring will concract to its memorized form and drag the panels to both ends and result in flattening of the solar panels

Temperature continues to go higher and the solar panel is flatten towards outer side to gain sunlight while providing more shade

PART IV, Transdiciplinary Craft Centre

Agriculture The project intend to bind the three important elements into one, connecting people from different community and achieve a balance and harmony way of life style at the pier.

Art & Craft User engagement to the activity in the site plays an important role to achieve the said intention, therefore, activities here focuses on the interaction every individual.

As the community here is so diverse, it is an experiment ground of creating new experience and innovation for the both locals and tourist.

Flood Located right at the river bank, Bang Ka Chao pier is exposed to flood issue, challenges like water salinity, floods, pollution and waste management can be harzardous to the local community.

Flood causes lost of mineral from the existing soil thus eliminating the growth of orchards and farm.

Mishandled Dumpsite Due to the rise in tourism activity, more garbage is produce and the rate of mishandled of garbage risen quickly, forming more dumpsites than ever.

The water pollution due to garbage deposition not only taints the agriculture products and endangering the ecosystem, but may potentially lead to flood.

Possible approaches: Recycling of scrap items into craft Food waste can be use to produce compost for plantation

Though the pier has a strong tourism base as it provides a phenomenal skyline view and bicycle rental zone for tourist before they set off to park.

However, the potential of the site is halted as the site only work as a interchanging point between other activites off site.

Possible approaches: - Adding more interesting activities within the site - Improving view into site to attract people

ENDANGERED NATURE

Lost of Green Space sits at the confluence of three natural ecosystems, namely the mangroves, freshwater swamp forests and tropical rainforest, the vestiges of these ecosystems still provide a source of livelihood for locals and serve as an oasis for tourists. However overpopulation and misuse of land result in a great loss of green space.
