2026 SEASON PROGRAM

WELCOME BIENVENIDO

BEM-VINDO A new building, a new season, and a new Zeiterion.

It has been a privilege to steward the hundredyear-old city treasure that is the Zeiterion through a transformational restoration and renovation. Though it was difficult to go dark, it gave us a muchneeded opportunity for deep reflection, which set us on a journey to transform the way we work. For the Zeiterion to serve New Bedford for the next 100 years, we need to build with the community, not just for the community. This sentiment is at the heart of our new strategic plan – five ambitious goals that are our pathway to The Z’s next act. We hope you’ll join us on this journey as we move towards becoming the Zeiterion that truly reflects the people and spirit of New Bedford. What you find in the following pages is just the beginning. We will add more performances and events in the coming months. The grand reopening of the new Zeiterion will be celebrated all year long. We invite you to come explore it all.

the City without The Z wasn’t nearly the same. But this season, after the most ambitious renovation in its history, the Z reemerges more vibrant and awe-inspiring than ever. The $37 million project, funded by private and public dollars, has restored nearly every facet of the facility, and brought to life new spaces that will expand the Z’s reach. The project was ambitious, but The Z, and those who hold it dear, deserved nothing less. The Z is a gathering place where people of all ages, walks of life, and perspectives can come together to experience a moment they can collectively enjoy. It creates community, event by event, our memories of which can bring us a little closer together. In an age when much pulls us apart, let the Z be our antidote. I hope you enjoy your shared experience at The Z today, and that the memory of the moment will last a lifetime.

VISION FOR FUTURE

A NEW SPIRIT

For decades, the Zeiterion has been a vibrant hub where countless memories have been made. Just as we are transforming the century-old building into a beacon for creative expression, we are embarking on an ambitious journey to transform the way we work.

During the Zeiterion’s restoration and renovation, The Z team embarked on a mission to define who we are and who we want to be. We created an ambitious vision for our future: to completely reinvent the model for a performing arts center from the inside out, to make it an organization FOR the community and WITH the community.

Here’s what you can expect:

We established five goals that represent a large shift in our organization. Some are already in action, and most are works in progress that will take the next several years to accomplish.

This place is our purpose.

We are committed to activating our historic home as a dynamic civic and cultural hub, inviting you into a living, breathing space for connection, dialogue, and shared experience.

This is your Zeiterion.

We are reimagining our programming so that it centers a wide array of voices and lived experiences, creating space for learning, artistic expression, and storytelling that resonates across generations.

Our values light the way.

As we move into the future, we will grow with intention and a deep commitment to justice, collaboration, and reciprocity.

Restore and reactivate the Zeiterion Reimagine what’s on The Z stage Build mutually beneficial partnerships Expand The Z’s organizational capacity Unlearn oppressive behaviors

The next phase of The Z will require courageous unlearning, intentional partnerships, and active listening. We are building on our legacy, ensuring that our mission endures - and transforms with our community at heart.

Check out the full plan for The Z’s future by scanning this QR code.

DEDICATED SPACES

A SPECIAL THANKS TO BENJAMIN BAKER

Sarah R. Delano Historic Lobby

During his life, Benjamin Baker served more than the Zeiterion; he served New Bedford. First as City Planner in the mid-1970s, but his work didn’t stop there. Of the many roles that followed, first Regional Manager of the Southeastern Regional Transit Authority (SRTA) and Chief of Staff for Mayor John Bullard are just a couple of highlights.

The historic lobby maintains its dedication to WHALE President Sarah R. Delano who led a group of citizens to save The State Theatre in 1982.

The Baker Family Lobby

In acknowledgement of more than 40 years of contributions from Deborah and Benjamin Baker, the new upper lobby is now dedicated to The Bakers.

Bristol County Savings Bank Lounge The new lounge on the second-floor bears Bristol County Savings Bank name in acknowledgement of the bank’s generosity, which includes longtime season sponsorship of The Z.

Armand Marchand & George Charbonneau Box Office

The founders of New Bedford Festival Theatre’s Armand Marchand and George Charbonneau have had an enormous impact on the Zeiterion, and now the hub of the building is named in their honor.

Along with wife Deborah, he owned and operated Baker Books. In addition to regularly attending shows at The Z, the couple donated a percentage of sales from events held at their store and were sponsors of The Z for many years. Collectively, the Bakers have served more than four decades on the Zeiterion Board and remain steadfast supporters to this day. In appreciation of their service, The Z presented the Bakers with its inaugural Paragon Award in 2017, and it was subsequently renamed the Deborah and Benjamin Baker Award in their honor. Following the historic restoration and renovation, the Zeiterion’s Upper Lobby is now The Baker Family Lobby. The Z has received many gifts in Ben’s name since his passing in 2024, demonstrating the magnitude of his impact on our community.

Dr. Gail Davidson Movement Studio

The brand-new movement studio has been named for Dr. Gail Davidson in recognition of her significant contributions to the Zeiterion. Dr. Gail Davidson has been a dedicated member of the board for 35 years, serving as both president and clerk. In recognition of her outstanding service and commitment to The Z, she was honored with the Paragon Award in 2018.

LOOK UP! Scaffolding three stories high allowed specialists to expertly restore the theater ceiling. Take a moment to observe the improvements. Today it shines just as it would have in 1923!

Mural

Our signature mural has returned to its original color scheme on canvas, a common practice in 1923, to mitigate spider cracks and maximize durability, likely for another hundred years.

Muses

Each of the 87 dancing figures has been spruced up, first by repairing their plaster, then by painting them gold to return them to their original splendor.

Chandelier

The 2,000-lb lighting fixture has been deep cleaned using highfrequency sound waves and re-cabled so all of the 25,066 crystal components shine bright once again.

Flowers

The tiniest of flourishes overhead are hundreds of rosette flowers that were carved from plaster by hand using dental tools.

LOOK AROUND! While you’re here, notice these new and historic details throughout all four floors of the building.

Box Office

A brand-new box office was created, but the original box office window was saved and moved to the opposite side of the lobby.

Meet Apollo

Greek God of music, poetry, and light.

Tile

Sound Panels

These patterns take inspiration from the ever-stylish chevron.

Tiny Zs!

These small Zs surrounding the historic lobby were rediscovered during the paint restoration when the center of the shield was returned to a rich crimson color.

Blue squares

Details

Paint artisans used a stippling technique and a custom template to bring this decorative detail back to life throughout the theater.

Apollo Box Office

Sound Panels

Out with the tapestries, in with better sound! These wall panels were installed to improve acoustics without sacrificing style.

Tiny Z Light Fixtures

Fixtures

Spot the new light fixtures above the bar in the second-floor Bristol County Savings Bank Lounge and in the basement Speakeasy. 10

THE GRAND REOPENING OF THE Z A joyful homecoming! New Bedford Festival Theatre New Bedford Symphony Orchestra The Zeiterion

GRAND REOPENING CELEBRATION SPONSORS

NOTES ON THE FIREBIRD SUITE

by Igor Stravinsky, Russian composer (1882–1971) When The Firebird burst onto the stage of Paris’s Théâtre National de l’Opéra in 1910, it announced the arrival of a young composer whose imagination would redefine twentieth-century music. At just 27 years old, Igor Stravinsky was virtually unknown when the impresario Sergei Diaghilev commissioned him to write the score for the Ballets Russes’ new production based on a Russian fairy tale. The result was a sensation—both for its vivid storytelling and its daring, kaleidoscopic sound world. The ballet’s tale blends darkness and wonder. The young Prince Ivan wanders into the enchanted realm of the evil sorcerer Kashchei, where he captures and then releases the magical Firebird, earning her promise of help. When Ivan later falls in love with a captive princess and is seized by Kashchei’s monsters, the Firebird comes to his aid—lulling the creatures to sleep with a hypnotic dance, breaking the spell, and allowing Ivan to triumph. The story ends in radiant celebration as the freed kingdom rejoices. Stravinsky’s music blazes with color and invention. Its shimmering strings, glittering harp glissandi, and exotic harmonies evoke a glowing, supernatural world; its propulsive rhythms and folk-inflected melodies root it deeply in Russian tradition. The 1919 concert suite distills the ballet into its most memorable moments: • Introduction – a mysterious awakening in the enchanted garden; • The Firebird and Her Dance – dazzling and mercurial; • The Princesses’ Round Dance – a tender waltz of human warmth amid the magic; • Infernal Dance of King Kashchei – a furious, rhythm-driven outburst of orchestral brilliance; • Berceuse (Lullaby) – the Firebird’s gentle spell of sleep; and • Finale – a majestic rebirth crowned by one of the most triumphant themes in all of orchestral music.

Frank and Denise Almeida Sponsors as of 12.18.2025. See zeiterion.org for all sponsors of this event. 40

The Firebird transformed Stravinsky’s life overnight. Within a few years, he would create Petrushka and The Rite of Spring, cementing his reputation as the most innovative voice of his generation. Yet even in this first great success, we hear the essence of Stravinsky’s genius: the marriage of myth and modernity, ritual and rhythm, the human and the fantastical—all brought vividly to life through sound. The ensemble of Native and Indigenous jazz musicians performs pieces from their under-appreciated predecessors in jazz, like Mildred Bailey (Coeur d’Alene) and Jim Pepper (Kaw/Mvskoke), alongside works by contemporary Indigenous composers. The band spotlights a vibrant, longstanding tradition of Indigenous improvised music today.
