From the moment we closed our doors to our reopening, you have been with us every step of the way. Guiding us through the dark, much like the ghost light that kept the theater illuminated while we were closed. We truly couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you for being a member of our amazing community of
Dear Friend, The past two years have been rough for all of us, in various ways. As of the writing of this report, the Zeiterion is open and welcoming audiences and artists back into our beloved theater. But there were some difficult days and decisions leading up to this: staff furloughs, doors closed, empty red seats. Nothing but the ghost light on stage to keep us moving forward. But, in between those dark days, some glimpses of light began to emerge. We can now see the silver linings: When we launched the Resiliency Fund to help support The Z’s operations – and you all stepped up in a big way. When we were finally able to bring people together to enjoy live events and movies… from their cars… in a parking lot. When COVID relief programs and grants helped bolster the organization. When we started to look internally and articulate our values, which define our culture. When we realized that what we do at The Z is the very healing we all needed – and continue to need – throughout these difficult times. We are so grateful for your support during these dark times and for challenging us to do better, to be better. We also have gratitude for the silver linings. Because silver linings do not negate the storm; they shine because of it. This Impact Report represents the Zeiterion’s previous two fiscal years, spanning from October 2019 through September 2021. Before the pandemic hit, we were riding a wave of growth and optimism. Then, halfway through our fiscal year, the lights literally went out. With your help, we began to find our way out of the darkness with new ways of working. In this report, you’ll find our silver linings. You’ll see the story of resilience that you helped us build. Pivoting to online classes, virtual events, and bringing the show outside with the Zeiterion Drive-In. It also gave us the time to pause our busy schedule of events and do much needed internal work, like defining our values, planning our future, and addressing issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion.

On March 11, 2020, we were forced to face a stark reality: the World Health Organization had declared COVID-19 a global pandemic, and it was no longer safe to invite the community into our historic theater to experience the performing arts. We cancelled or postponed events for the next few weeks, transitioned staff to remote work, and crossed our fingers that it would be over soon. It wasn’t.
As it become more and more clear that this pandemic was going to leave our theater dark for months, we were forced to make hard decisions. Most staff members were furloughed, and some were laid off. Many of the shows we rescheduled had to be cancelled or rescheduled again (and again, and again).

The theater was dark, and would remain so for over a year. Short bursts of activity would occur: the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra and New Bedford Festival Theatre both had virtual events hosted from the Zeiterion stage. Historic Surfaces visited to do an analysis of the historic paint colors of the theater to assist with upcoming plans to restore the space. We were able to temporarily regroup some of the staff long enough to plan outdoor events at the Zeiterion Drive-In, organize virtual events, and to launch the Resiliency Fund.

Thank you so much for creating the Drive-In! We are both high-risk for COVID-19, so this was the first time we were really able to get out of the house and have a 'date night' in four months!

In the summer of 2021, we were able to partner with the City of New Bedford to present free concerts in the 54th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Plaza (formly known as Custom House Square). Although at this time the theater was open to a limited numbers of patrons, many were still hesitant to gather indoors.
In June of 2020, we launched The Zeiterion Drive-In — outdoor live shows and films that our community could enjoy in the safety of their own vehicles. The series was a success, and we were able to schedule more Drive-In events in the Fall of 2020.

In June of 2021, The Z was able to reopen at an extremely limited capacity. This created the perfect opportunity to launch Cinema New Bedford, an ongoing film series, curated by MJ Herrup, PhD, that taps into the joys of collective viewing and discovery. Through interactive discussions with filmmakers, actors, experts, and community stakeholders, Cinema New Bedford expands our thinking and experience, building community and conversation along the way.
Our enthusiastic teaching artists created virtual classes for learners of all ages, on topics from poetry to salsa dancing, Cape Verdean music and ukulele (pictured). We were also able to present some virtual productions.

The Zeiterion recognizes that, as a primarily white arts and culture organization, we operate from a place of privilege and have been complicit in maintaining systemic racism within the performing arts. We understand that identifying the problem is not enough and commit to establishing equitable policies in Human Resources, the authentic presentation of BIPOC voices on our stage, and anti-bias training for our staff, board and volunteers. • Donations to the Resiliency Fund filled in for lost revenue from programs, which allowed us to hire artists who were some of the hardest hit during this time, and to keep our core staff team intact.
• We are now coming out of this period in a strong cash position, which will allow us to invest in our equity and inclusion goals.
Notes from our Treasurer, Christie Marotta
Overall, we found a way to deliver on our core mission of bringing people together to experience the performing arts while doing so in a financially responsible way. Some highlights from the last two fiscal years:
• We saw a significant shift in the organization’s balance of earned to contributed income (typical year is 75% earned, 25% contributed; that flipped in FY2021).
Although we have endured two years of unprecedented challenges, I am pleased to report that the Zeiterion is emerging from the pandemic on strong financial footing.
• The government's pandemic relief—which included the Paycheck Protection Plan and the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant—was essential to The Z’s survival and our ability to reopen.
• We maintained tight controls on expenses over the course of two years, reducing to only essential staff who were partially furloughed before relief funding became available.
