OBITUARIES John Ridlington Dies June 27

John Wayne Ridlington was a quiet man who loved the Lord with all his heart. He was a faithful member of Shekinah Revival Ministries and volunteered for many years helping with the church’s food ministry. True to his nature, he quietly left this Earth on June 27, 2023, to be received into glory by his Savior.

John enjoyed hunting and fishing. He especially liked to go turkey hunting and was able to do some hunting early this May with the help of his grandson and sonin-law. Often times in the Spring and Fall of the year, you would find John taking a friend or family member out to the woods to teach him the fine art of turkey hunting.

He enjoyed that so much that he would jokingly refer to himself as “Ridlington Outfitters.”

His other hunting passion was for the “elusive morel.”

Mushroom hunting was a highly anticipated annual activity, and John prided himself in having secret spots to find them. He also had a garden every Summer, and enjoyed sharing his mushroom finds and garden vegetables with others.

John is survived by his loving wife of almost 32 years, Barbara Love Ridlington; four children, Michael Ridlington, Tracy Rota, Sara Dalton, and Angela (Matthew) Miles; eight grandchildren; a brother and two sisters.

A service took place on Thursday, June 29, at Shekinah Revival Ministries, 1941 Washington Street, Holland.

Albert Jay Eunice Lemson Boers Dies at Dies at Age 87 Age 95 Eunice Lemson, age 87 of Zeeland passed away Sunday, June 25, 2023.

Eunice was a member of First Christian Reformed Church in Zeeland. She retired from Allen Extruders where she worked as an administrative assistant.

She is survived by her sister Ruth Diemer; her nieces and nephews: Wanda Ridlington, Lila Diemer, Ken Diemer, Richard and Shelley Lampen, Donald and Delores Lampen, Dale Lampen and several great nieces and nephews.

Eunice was preceded in death by her parents Jacob and Katherine Lemson; her sister Jane Lemson, her sister and her brother-in-law Madeline and Lloyd Lampen, her brother-in-law Russell Diemer and her niece Linda Joy Stidham.

Visitation and a funeral service were held on Friday, June 30, at First Christian Reformed Church, 15 South Church Street, Zeeland. Interment was in Zeeland Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to a charity of your own choice. www.yntemafh.com

Wayne VanDerHulst Dies at Age 86 Wayne VanDerHulst, 86, passed away on Sunday, June 25, 2023.

Wayne had a great sense of humor and quick wit. He was very sensitive, had a tender heart, and was an honest man. His sock collection was extensive, and he enjoyed vacations, reading, cooking, and classical music.

He was dearly loved and will be missed by his entire family.

He is preceded in death by his brother, Leo VanDerHulst.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen VanDerHulst; daughter, Carrie and Glen VanDyke; daughter, Cindy and Vince Goulet; 8 grandchildren; 5 greatgrandchildren; sister, Joan and Mike Vander Kooi; brother, Paul and Bonnie VanDerHulst; brother, Randy and Barb VanDerHulst; and brother-in-law, Robin and Cathy Strunk.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 29, at Christ Memorial Church Chapel 595 Graafschap Rd. Holland, including military honors and with Rev. Gary Matthews officiating.

Burial took place in Restlawn Cemetery.

Albert Jay Boers, 95, was taken home to heaven on June 27, 2023. Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on February 28, 1928, he narrowly missed being a Leap Year baby. If you knew Al, you know he would have had fun with that over the vears!

Al was a hard worker at dozens of jobs throughout his life, spending the bulk of his career as a Claims Manager at Travelers Insurance Company. He was also a willing volunteer, serving as treasurer and youth leader at Christ Memorial Church and spending countless hours painting and distributing brochures for the Holland Museum. He worked at Freedom Village for 25 years, first in marketing before the building was up and later, as a driver. He lived there with his late wife, Elaine, for 16 years.

After a brief stint in the Navy following high school, Al attended GR Junior College and then Hope College, where he met his wife, Elaine, on a blind date. They were staunch supporters of the college, especially Hope basketball and football, where Al was crew chief of the Chain Gang for 50 years.

Al and Elaine enjoyed traveling, visiting nearly 2 dozen countries together. Al had a passion for the Olympic Games and creatively utilized his innate frugality to attend 9 Olympic Games on a tight budget (Elaine went along a few times). Amazingly, he could recall minute details about each trip, and so many other things in his life. He delighted in sharing jokes, riddles, limericks, and quotes to one and all. Surely having heard them all too many times to count, his long-suffering wife refrained from rolling her eyes 99% of the time.

While rejoicing that we will see him again in heaven, Al will be deeply missed by many. He is survived by children Jann (Mike) Kolean, Susan (Rick) Smith, Mark Boers, Sally (Brian) Cote, 11 grandchildren, 23 greatgrandchildren, sister-in-law, Carole Boers, brother-in-law, Glenn Groustra, sister-in-law, June Groustra, and nieces and nephews. Wife Elaine, 2 sisters, a brother, and a great- grandson preceded him in death.

A funeral service was held at Freedom Village on July 5, 2023, with visitation and refreshments immediately following. Memorial contributions may be made to Hope College for the Hope Forward Plan.

Richard Vredeveld Dies at Age 73 Richard Vredeveld, 73, of Holland, passed away unexpectedly on June 23, 2023. He was born in Holland on 5/2/1950, graduating from West Ottawa High School in 1968.

He is survived by his children: Tracy (Cerry) VanFleeren; Tom Vredeveld; Tim (Joanne) Vredeveld; brother: Gary (Deb) Vredeveld; sister: Pam (Jim) Lockwood; former wife Nancy (Schreur) Vredeveld; grandchildren: Mikayla (Logan) Welcher; Vanessa (Warren) Haynor; Jaydon Vredeveld; Faith Vredeveld; Desmond (Devon) Kolean-Burley; Autumn (Natasha) Chorney.

Supplementing this is a long line of important nieces, and nephews who also mourn the loss of their Uncle Rich. Also pained by this loss are the collection of dear VFW friends who will miss his willingness to lend a hand and dedication to making things happen.

He was predeceased by his parents: James and Pearline (O’Donnell) Vredeveld; infant brother Len; infant granddaughter Aleyah VanFleeren.

Rich was a passionate man, who was exceptionally generous and loved to help others. He was also a notably stubborn man, well known for demanding the check when dining out with friends and family, insisting he cover the bill.

He had an adventurous spirit and was always interested in learning and experiencing new things. He enlisted in the Air Force at age 18, where he was able to have first-hand experience with serving his country, becoming an airplane mechanic, and achieving the rank of Sergeant during the Vietnam

War. This launched a life-long love for aviation. It also cemented his devotion to and participation with the family of US Veterans. He joined the VFW and served twice as Post Commander for the Holland VFW Post 2144, as well as District 8 Jr. Vice Commander, District 8 Sr. Vice Commander, and All State Team 1988 Post Commander. He was also a proud member of the Vietnam Veterans of America, Disabled American Veterans, the American Legion, the Pioneer Club, Moose International and the Marine Corp League. He became an expert marksman, winning multiple shooting competitions and even owning his own small gun business, Ottawa Arms, where he sold guns, reloading and gun supplies. He had many opportunities to explore new career opportunities working for Holland Hitch, Batts, Life Savers, Sara Lee, and Brooks Beverages.

He yearned to explore the world, enthusiastically engaging in hobbies including photography, hunting, fishing, and star gazing.

In his later years, blindness didn’t stop his zest for adventure. He was regularly seen with his white cane, continuing to serve with the VFW Color Guard for 30 years, honoring other Veterans during their funeral services.

The funeral service was held on Friday morning, June 30 at Family Church-Grace Chapel, 9530 Woodbridge Street, Zeeland.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to an important veteran focused initiative to combat suicide, at VFW Auxiliary 2144, 175 W 8th St., designated Blue Tear Drop.

Virginia Weurding Dies at Age 80 Virginia Weurding, 80, of Forest Grove, passed away on Sunday, June 25, 2023 Virginia was born to Henry and Evelyn (Berens) Palmbos on August 25, 1942, in Zeeland, Michigan.

She married Henry Weurding, and they raised their two sons in Forest Grove. Virginia and Henry were longtime members of Forest Grove Reformed Church. Henry preceded her in death in 2008. She was also preceded in death by her brother Roger Palmbos, her in-laws: Pearl and Dick Vande Bunte, Etta and Frank Strick, Yvonne McCoy, She is survived by her sons: Douglas and Carley Weurding, David and Christina Weurding,

grandchildren: Logan, Elyse, Josie, Emily; siblings: Patricia and Bern Groenink, Jack and Karla Palmbos, in-laws: Diane Palmbos, Tom McCoy; and many extended family members.

Tahr hunting in New Zealand

We just returned from a trip to New Zealand. For me the trip had multiple parts. Parts sightseeing, part taking photos and part hunting.

Let’s start off by sharing that this was a truly remarkable trip. Future articles will share how this trip can be for anyone who enjoys the outdoors.

My plan was not to shoot an animal. The primary goal was taking photos and soaking in the scenery. That went to the wayside once we hit the mountain top.

This journey started with a four-hour drive from our lodge. Our final destination was two hours away from the town of Christ Church.

We drove perhaps ten miles on a dirt road that maybe had five homes along the road. This is sheep country and home to Merino Wool.

The last sheep farm was also home to a helicopter pilot.

The pilot provided a safety procedure and lectured on what we must do once we land. No hats on, no loose items and most important once out, duck down and hug the ground. Don’t move until the chopper is airborne.

The pilot thrilled us by flying us through the steep canyons, dropping down deep into the ravines and then straight upward over the next peak. The pilot dropped us onto a plateau near the very top.

Somewhere around the 6500-foot mark above sea level.

The back packs and guns were unloaded before the pilot headed down the mountain. From here our journey would begin. We hunted as a group. These mountains were snow capped with no trees, large patches of grass, lots of rock and gravel and then more patches of snow.

We learned earlier in the week to layer up. Regardless of the temperature, once you started hiking you got warm. Quality foot wear was another must item. Grass soaked in the morning dew required good tread wear.

There were plenty of gullies between the various mountain slopes.

Some were filled with water from the snow melt. All had plenty of rocks and there were plenty of places where a substantial vertical drop could be found.

We would travel downward, stop and glass. Then cross another gully and then climb up another slope so we could glass some more.

One gully had me nervous. My vision is less than great and trying to focus on a hand or toe holds proved challenging at times. Looking at my feet and then looking ahead six to ten feet created some anxiety for me.

At some grassy slopes we would sit for thirty minutes and not see anything. The next stop might show us a Tahr (a member of the goat family) 400 to 600 yards out with no chance of a stalk.

Finally, after crossing the one slope where my anxiety flared up, a good Tahr was spotted. A stalk was on and after narrowing the range to 300, perhaps 325 yards, Kelly was able to put on a good shot.

While scoping out this animal my son had sported another Tahr.

Our guide said no good, too small. After Kelly shot, we spotted another Tahr. This Tahr was working his way down a steep slope towards the smaller Tahr. Perhaps twenty minutes had passed before my son was able to shoot.

A perfect shot was made and luckily for us, it dropped in its tracks.

If not, most likely it would have ended up another 200 yards down deep into a gully.

While slowly working our way towards the first downed Tahr a few more were spotted perhaps 800 yards out. They were working down a grass slope and often bedded down near boulders the size of a VW bug. A new stalk was put into place and after much maneuvering I was able to shoot.

We had barely an hour of daylight left and we knew that the chopper would be looking for us soon. It would take the pilot two trips to get the hunters out and the animals.

Once we arrived back at the sheep farm, we found out that one of our hunting partners had shot a Tahr with a bow. Taking five hours to hike up 3000 feet in elevation he was able to stalk within bow range.

Lake Superior Anglers Asked to Report Marked Splake Anglers fishing Lake Superior can help the Michigan Department of Natural Resources evaluate the splake fishery by reporting marked splake. Splake, which are a hybrid cross between lake trout and brook trout, have been stocked in Lake Superior most years since 1971, with annual stocking since 1990.

Since 2021, marked splake have been stocked in Lake Superior. At the Marquette State Fish Hatchery, staff from the DNR’s Lake Superior and Northern Lake Michigan management units, as well as field staff from across the state, put in long hours carefully marking the splake by hand. These fish then get stocked at three Lake Superior ports: Copper Harbor, Keweenaw Bay and Munising.

Splake stocked at each port get a unique mark specific to each location for further analysis. The goal is to create nearshore fishing opportunities in the smaller bays of Lake Superior, where some fisheries are available year-round.

“The data we collect from anglers assists in making decisions on how to best manage Michigan’s fisheries,” said Patrick Hanchin, Lake Superior Basin coordinator.

process. We’ll be marking splake through 2025, with the evaluation study being conducted through 2030.”

When anglers catch a splake, they should inspect it for missing fins or a jawbone clip, which indicate it has been marked.

Marked fish then can be reported at Michigan.gov/EyesInTheField to give information such as species, length, weight, sex, and date and location caught, or by contacting a local DNR office.

Anglers also can report marked splake to DNR creel staff stationed at various ports along the Lake Superior shoreline. Because

they’re genetically tied to both lake trout and brook trout, splake can take the external appearance of the parent species, making them difficult to distinguish. Creel staff can help to correctly identify the fish, distinguish marks on fish and record angler trip data. Everyone is encouraged to provide their fishing trip information when approached by DNR creel staff.

Anglers are reminded that other natural resources agencies and tribal units mark a variety of fish species for different evaluation purposes. For more information on fish marking in Michigan, visit Michigan.gov/TaggedFish.

Learn About Proposed Michigamme Highlands Conservation Project Comprised of vast forests, remote lakes, trout streams, Michigan’s highest elevation, moose-inhabited swamps and some of the most climate-resilient landscape in Michigan, the Michigamme Highlands in the western Upper Peninsula is truly exceptional.

That’s why the Michigan Department of Natural Resources is working with the current landowner, Lyme Great Lakes Timberlands, to potentially protect this area through a working forest conservation easement.

The 73,000-acre Michigamme Highlands project includes the summit of Mt. Arvon (Michigan’s highest point), 37 miles of rivers, 220 miles of perennial streams, 96 lakes and ponds, more than 13,600 acres of wetlands, over 4,800 acres of white-tailed deer winter habitat and habitat for federal and statelisted threatened or endangered species. The Highlands are home to moose, black bear, pine marten, fisher, grouse, eagles, coaster brook trout, brown and rainbow trout, Coho and pink salmon, bass and northern pike.

The project spans portions of Baraga, Iron and Marquette counties.

The Michigamme Highlands conservation project as proposed would give the DNR conservation easement rights on behalf of Michigan’s residents while the land remains privately owned by Lyme. Those rights would ensure that the property is sustainably managed as a working forest, protect wildlife habitat, prevent development or subdivision of the property and ensure public

recreational access forever.

The DNR and Lyme are inviting the public and interested stakeholders to visit and learn more about the Michigamme Highlands project during two upcoming property tours: • Monday, July 10 at 12:45 p.m. Eastern: Meet at Lyme Great Lakes Timberlands Office, 15800 Mead Road, L’Anse.

• Tuesday, July 11 at 8:45 a.m. Eastern: Meet at Koski Corners Park and Ride, intersection of US-41/M-28 and M-95, Champion.

Dealing with Tree Surface Roots

Roots erupting through the soil surface that extend beyond the tree trunk are known as surface roots. This is a normal part of aging for shallow-rooted trees.

The aging roots increase in circumference just like the tree’s branches and trunk. As they thicken, the upper portion of the roots appear above the soil surface.

These irritate gardeners when trying to grow and mow the grass under the tree. It is important not to bury, cut, dig up, or shave off these important roots. Covering or damaging the roots creates entryways for insects and diseases to enter and damage or even kill your tree.

Mulch is a simple solution. Use a 2-to-3-inch layer on the soil surrounding the tree. Pull the mulch away from the tree trunk to avoid insects, disease, and rodent problems. Create a mulch ring as large as possible. This eliminates the need to hand trim grass near the tree and makes mowing easier. Mulch is also better for the tree than grass growing up to the trunk. The grass is a big competitor for water and nutrients and can stunt the tree’s growth.

Reduce ongoing maintenance with the help of newspaper or cardboard. Start by edging the bed to disconnect the grass and weeds under the tree from the surrounding plants that can serve as their life support.

Now cut the grass and weeds as short as possible being careful not to harm the surface roots.

Cover the area to be mulched with newspaper or cardboard.

This creates a temporary but extra layer of mulch that helps kill the grass. The paper will eventually break down and improve the soil below. Cover this with a 2- to 3-inch layer of shredded bark or woodchips for years of weed control.

Consider shade-tolerant perennials and groundcovers if mulched beds do not fit your design style. These plants will eliminate the need to mow over surface roots, add seasonal interest, and they do not compete with the trees like lawn grass.

Barrenwort, Canadian ginger, hostas, Variegated Solomon seal, coral bells, foam flower, Bergenia, and Siberian bugloss are a few to consider. Make sure the plants you select are suited to your growing conditions and your garden design.

Use caution when planting under mature trees. Avoid deep tilling that can damage, not only the surface roots but also the fine feeder roots that absorb water and nutrients. Instead, dig relatively small holes between major roots and allow the plants to fill in the area.

Mulch the soil surface with leaves, evergreen needles, or other organic mulch to conserve moisture and improve the soil as they decompose. Water thoroughly once plants are in the ground and often enough to keep the roots slightly moist throughout the summer.

Add a splash of color with a few potted annuals by setting

them among the perennial groundcovers. This allows you to change the plantings as the seasons change. You can also permanently sink a few nursery pots in the ground. Then plant flowers in a slightly smaller container and set this pot in the one permanently buried in the ground. This method is less disruptive to the tree roots and easier on your back.

Funding to Support Michigan’s Defense Footprint and Veterans

“We’ve heard terrible stories about people married off by their parents at a young age into abusive relationships — only to be stuck in the marriage until they turn 18. This would help solve that problem,” said Huizenga, R-Walker. “This long-overdue reform is about better protecting our children from sexual and physical abuse by preventing marriages in Michigan until both parties are old enough to make these decisions for themselves.”

Under current Michigan law, a minor over the age of 16 but under the age of 18 can be married with the consent of a parent or legal guardian.

Additionally, someone under the age of 16 can get married with

the consent of all living parents or legal guardians and the order of a probate judge.

“Functionally, Michigan has no minimum age for marriage,” Huizenga said.

Among the changes in Senate Bills 209-217 and 246 are: • Prohibiting the marriage of a minor under the age of 18.

• Voiding any marriage entered into by someone under age 18.

• Eliminating the exception allowing minors between ages 16 and 18 to enter into a marriage contract with parental consent.

• Stopping probate judges from marrying minors.

• Banning a parent from authorizing the marriage of an underage child.

• Removing a clause in the state’s divorce statute that prevents an annulment for couples married underage who cohabitated as a married couple after turning age 18.

Secretary Benson Urges Legislators to Implement transparency and Ethics Reforms Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson testified on Thursday, June 22, before the House Ethics and Oversight Committee in support of legislation to implement government ethics reforms supported by a bipartisan majority of Michigan voters last November and urged legislators to take further action to increase government transparency.

“For too long, our state has been among the worst, if not the worst state in the nation when it comes to government transparency and ethics laws,” Secretary Benson said. “Voters want this to change. They made this clear by-passing Proposal 1, requiring more transparency at the intersection of money and politics. What I am here to do today is to urge you to go above and beyond what the voters required, and to pass laws that the voters, and many of you, actually want.”

In her testimony, Benson also urged lawmakers to adopt several reforms including: • Expanding financial disclosure requirements to include candidates, supreme court justices, and other statewide elected officials like the education and university boards.

• Aligning state disclosure requirements with those used by the U.S. Congress • Creating penalties for noncompliance including fines, candidate disqualification, and prosecution • Closing the “revolving door” from government to

lobbying by requiring a 1-year gap for all legislators and 2 years for committee chairs, the Speaker of the House, Senate Majority leader, and any statewide elected official • Making high-level staff subject to the same disclosure requirements as the elected officials and department heads for whom they work • Banning all gifts above the federal threshold to officials and their staff • Limiting the number of PACs and related fundraising entities a person can have and strengthening requirements for contributions and disclosure.

• Expanding the Freedom of Information Act to include the Governor’s office and members of the state Legislature.

• Strengthening enforcement capabilities to ensure elected leaders and candidates obey our laws.

“While that may sound like a laundry list of regulations, the truth is that many of the laws are already in place in other states and at the federal level,” Benson said. “They are tried, tested, proven effective and can be easily modified to fit within our existing legal framework in Michigan.

We can go from worst to first by simply implementing the national best practices that are in place elsewhere, thereby making Michigan a place where the practices of governing, legislating and leading is done with integrity by all involved and in accordance with the will of voters.”

Affairs, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act. This legislation would fund Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) programs, veterans’ medical care and benefits along with investments to modernize critical military infrastructure and high-impact local projects vital to our country’s national security.

The bill now advances to the full Senate. Meanwhile, the U.S. House of Representatives is considering their own funding bills. The Senate and House will then need to reach an agreement on a final funding bill and have it pass both chambers before being sent to the President to be signed into law.

“This is a strong first step and would deliver important resources to support veterans and their families who have sacrificed for our country. It would also further strengthen Michigan’s defense footprint and our national security,” said Senator Peters. “I’ll continue to keep pushing to ensure Michigan and our veterans have the resources they need, while making sure taxpayer dollars are used effectively, as we continue working on bills to fund the government.”

The bill includes measures led and supported by Peters, including: • Funding for a Manned/ Unmanned Tactical Vehicle Lab at the Army Ground Vehicle Systems Center in Warren, Michigan: Would provide $2.4 million to

efficient warfighter.

• Funding to support the construction of a Ground Transport Equipment Building at the Detroit Arsenal: Would provide $72 million to support the construction of a new building to provide research and development (R&D) laboratory space to support the advanced tactical and combat system mission functions. This follows Peters securing $2.5 million last year to help advance and complete the Mound Road/Detroit Arsenal Connector Project, which is a corridor that is home not only to the Detroit Arsenal but General Motors Tech Center, BAE Systems, General Dynamics Land Systems, as well as Stellantis and Ford Plants.

• Funding to support construction of two organic supply buildings at Battle Creek Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Center (MCRC): Would provide approximately $24 million to construct two new buildings and a vehicle wash platform, in support of the active-duty personnel and drilling reserve personnel assigned to MCRC Battle Creek.

• Funding for VA medical care and to support women veterans: Would provide resources for medical services, medical community care, and medical facilities – including to support women veterans health care and to strengthen the VA’s caregiver

and communication for veterans and caregivers participating in the program.

• Funding for the VA State Veterans Home Construction Grant Program: Would provide funding to allow states to make critical facility upgrades or construct new facilities to serve aging veteran populations at State Veterans Homes, which is funding Peters has consistently advocated for.

• Funding for VA medical research: Would fund research to advance efforts related to Traumatic Brain Injury, PFAS exposure, and veterans with deployment-related respiratory disease to continue efforts to identify non-invasive, FDA approved screening technologies that save veterans from invasive procedures.

• Funding to support veteran mental health services and suicide prevention efforts: Would support various VA mental health initiatives and suicide prevention outreach efforts, including the Veterans Crisis Line, Suicide Prevention Coordinators and improvements to depression treatment.

• Language allowing VA doctors to discuss medical cannabis with patients: Would remove the policy that prohibits VA doctors from recommending medical marijuana to patients in states where it is legal.

Michigan Small Businesses Support a Public-Private Retirement Savings Option The vast majority of Michigan small business owners and decisionmakers say more should be done to support Michigan workers saving for retirement, according to a new AARP small business survey. Most survey respondents agree that state lawmakers should back legislation to make it easier for businesses to access a retirement savings option at work for their employees and themselves.

Most small business owners surveyed by AARP (79%) agree that being able to offer a portable retirement savings program helps them attract and retain quality employees and stay competitive.

Yet nearly six in ten do not offer their workers a way to save for retirement.

“My business is young and growing but turnover can be high, so anything to entice people to stay longer while helping them save for the future is something I support,” said Kari Vanderheuel who owns The Red Fork restaurant and a coffee shop in northeast Michigan near Harrisville in Alcona County.

“I tend to employ younger people and I wish I could offer them something to help with saving for retirement, but financially I’m not in a position to do that. If there was a program that was easy and free to implement, I’d be interested.”

More than 40% of the Michigan’s private-sector workforce aged 18-64—workers at all levels of earnings, education, and backgrounds—do not have access to a retirement savings plan at work.

The smaller the employer, the less likely its workers are to have access to a retirement plan.

AARP found that 62% of small businesses are concerned about their employees not having enough money to cover health care or living expenses when they retire. One-in-four (25%) say they are very concerned. Most (82%) small business owners in this survey also said that as taxpayers, they are concerned that Michigan residents who have not saved enough money for retirement could end up being reliant on public assistance programs.

“Small businesses recognize there is a retirement savings crisis in Michigan, and they want lawmakers to take action,” said Paula Cunningham, AARP Michigan State Director. “Nearly 1.6 million Michigan workers do not have access to any savings plan at work. If we can make it easy for more workers to save through payroll deduction, workers will build savings, small businesses will benefit, and taxpayers will save money.”

Small business owners across the state told AARP they would support the creation of a privately managed, plug-and-play retirement savings option to allow employees to save money for the future through their paychecks. In other states, elected officials have developed retirement savings options for small businesses that don’t already offer a plan.

The majority (72%) of business

owners surveyed believe that conventional retirement savings plans are too costly and almost half (46%) think they would be too complicated for their business to operate.

However, when asked how likely they would be to participate in a retirement savings option as described in the survey, over twothirds of Michigan small business owners said they would be likely to offer access to their employees if it was available to them. Nearly three quarters said they would support such an option, which would be run similar to state college 529 savings plans.

Similar retirement-savings partnerships are up and running in Oregon, California, Illinois, Delaware, and Hawaii, and assets under management exceed $839 million. Missouri and Minnesota are the 17th and 18th states to pass retirement savings legislation, and several other states, including Ohio, are working on similar measures.

Many participants are first-time savers and the average income of savers in Oregon, which has had the program since 2017, is $29,000.

The 2023 Michigan Small Business Owner Survey was a telephone study among 548 small business owners or decision makers about employee benefits at companies with 1-150 additional employees. Interviews were conducted between April 21 and May 16, 2023. The margin of error for this sample is ± 4.2 percent.

“Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses.

Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live! --Deuteronomy 30:19, NLT You are more important than you may think. YOU are making history every day--with your choices!

As a parent and schoolteacher, I have often urged others to “make good choices,” but God our Father (when we have truly repented of our sins, and asked His Son, Jesus Christ, to forgive and cleanse us, and become our Savior and LORD) said it first.

(In fact, every positive slogan or motto or saying comes from the Word of God, no matter to whom the credit is given!)

You are more important than you may think. YOU are making history every day--with your choices!

Once, I was teaching robotics to fourth and fifth graders in a public school. Some of the kids kept talking after a few warnings, so I pulled out the disobedient ones for a discipline writing assignment. I decided to give them something different from the usual assignment, and hurriedly wrote down a few short paragraphs of an exhortation about choices: “There is a Great Plan for my life, as purposed by God. It is a wonderful Plan; one I will enjoy very much. This Plan is affected by my daily choices. My choices

are full of power—for good or bad, and like ripples on the lake of my life. My choices affect my life, and many others’—so I decided today to make good choices and enjoy the Great Plan for me!”

I had felt that the LORD had given me this; one reason being that I was constantly seeking to brag on God and draw those around me to Him. So, I made the choice to risk being “corrected” by a principal or such, but I wanted

to plant a God-seed in these kids, who obviously needed more of Him. The kids got quiet, very busy on their assignment of writing what I’d given them, and I continued to monitor the rest of the class, as they worked in small groups on building their robots.

Shortly, a couple of them called me, and said they were finished. I commended them for making good choices in getting

Intimacy with God

Many years ago, I was a fan of Guideposts, a magazine full of heartwarming personal stories of relationships with God. One day I decided to try to write for this magazine, so I read back issues and the editor’s guidelines for stories. Finally, I had to face the truth.

I didn’t have a personal connection with God that these stories described. My connection with God was purely intellectual.

I was not bothered by that truth until I understood the meaning of collaborating with the Spirit in the process of spiritual transformation - “being conformed into the image of Christ through a relationship of intimacy with God.” After decades of being a Christian, I learned that God is eager to journey through life with me. I understand that because I am created to have intimacy with God, I am also able to have feelings of rapport, affection, trust, and love with others.

Adam and Eve were well on the path of friendship and intimacy with God, “walking in the garden in the cool of the day” (v. 8).

Then the trust was broken by a power grab. In contrast, Jesus taught his disciples about Abba – the intimate way of knowing God as our Father. The ranch has also opened up creativity for the teachers and given them new ideas for ways to put curriculum into practice.

For example, after collecting eggs from the chicken, students use them to practice addition, subtraction, graphing and charting egg production.

OAISD Expands Career Tech Ed Offerings to Meet Growing Demand Ottawa Area Intermediate School District (OAISD) is excited to announce its ambitious plans to expand career and technical education (CTE) offerings, catering to the increasing demand from students, parents and employers throughout the Ottawa region.

This expansion aligns with OAISD’s strategic plan goal of providing multiple pathways for student success, broadening opportunities, and eliminating barriers and opportunity gaps to ensure that every student achieves their full potential.

According to OAISD Associate Superintendent of Career and Technical Education Dave Searles, the district’s CTE programming aims to empower students by offering them diverse career pathways, practical experience, and essential skills needed for success in the modern workforce.

“Recognizing the value of these programs, the demand for Careerline Tech Center has grown steadily over the years, resulting in a significant waitlist for 11th and 12th-grade students. However, we are witnessing an unprecedented surge in interest, with hundreds of students eager to join the programs this upcoming fall of 2023,” Searles said.

To address this growing demand, OAISD is implementing several initiatives: Careerline Tech Center 3rd Session Pilot Programs Starting in fall 2023, a 3rd session pilot program will be introduced at Careerline Tech Center offering scheduling flexibility and allowing more students to participate in the programs. The 3rd session will run from 3:15 to 5:15 PM, Monday through Thursday, throughout the academic year. Enrollment began in April for four state approved CTE programs: Cyber Security (IT: Network & Security), Electrical, Graphic Design, and Mechatronics & Robotics. Careerline Tech Center Health Sciences Campus Looking ahead to fall 2025, Careerline Tech Center has ambitious plans to establish a Health Sciences campus by renovating existing OAISD facilities. This expansion will create space for additional program offerings that align with future-focused industry needs and student interests. Renovated health sciences classrooms at the Tech Center will accommodate new programs, providing more students with access to career tech ed experiences and the opportunity to earn low-cost or no-cost college credits and industry certifications.

Work-Based Learning Partnerships Expansion OAISD recognizes the importance of real-world, onthe-job training for students.

The district provided over 1,000 Careerline Tech Center

students with work-based learning opportunities through partnerships with local employers during the 2022-23 academic year alone. To strengthen this initiative further, OAISD has forged extensive partnerships with local school districts, expanding regional work-based learning support and increasing the number of students who can access these valuable experiences. Through internships, apprenticeships, mentorship programs, and more, students gain practical insights into different industries and develop crucial workplace skills, empowering them to make informed decisions about their future career paths and continued education.

Web-Based Student/Employer Matching Tool OAISD has recently incorporated EmergeSkilled, an online tool that connects students with entry-level career opportunities. Students can create profiles showcasing their skills and experience, which are then matched with employer profiles using sophisticated algorithms.

This tool simplifies the process of connecting employers with suitable candidates, making it easier for students and employers to find the best fit.

OAISD remains committed to fostering partnerships with employers to prepare students for the evolving workforce. By actively engaging with employers, OAISD can align programs and curricula with industry needs, ensuring that students are equipped with relevant skills and knowledge required in the job market.

“The expanded offerings will empower students to secure higher-earning and more fulfilling job opportunities, ultimately contributing to the overall prosperity of their families and the community as a whole,” Searles added.

OAISD Superintendent Dr. Kyle Mayer says the district is committed to broadening opportunities, building support systems, and eliminating barriers and opportunity gaps so that all students can achieve their full potential.

“Addressing long-term facility needs is a priority for us,” Mayer said. “We understand the importance of forward-thinking planning and mechanisms that can evolve as needs emerge. By taking a proactive approach to facility planning, we can ensure that our students have access to modern and conducive learning environments.”

Mayer also points to innovation as a core mindset at OAISD. “We believe in turning challenges into opportunities and transforming ideas into creative solutions. We encourage and foster an innovative culture within our organization as we learn, serve and lead, constantly seeking new ways to improve and adapt to the evolving needs of our students and community,” Mayer said.

Gentex Foundation Awards College Scholarship in Stem The Gentex Foundation has selected the first recipients of the Amanda Clark Scholarship, a new program announced in October of last year, to support female high school seniors pursuing a degree in science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM).

The scholarship committee selected two winners this year: Madelyn Rynsburger and Paige Lampen. Both students will receive a $5,000 college scholarship for the 2023-2024 school year. The scholarship is renewable for up to three years for a total of $20,000 in college tuition support.

Madelyn Rynsburger is a senior at Zeeland West High School who plans to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering at Grand Valley State University. She is a member of the Zeeland High School First Robotic Team and the school’s National Honor Society.

“I hope to be an inspiration for the next generation of female scientists, mathematicians, and engineers,” Rynsburger said in her essay submission for the scholarship. “Math team coaches and robotics mentors have been important role models for me. I want to be that for someone else.”

Paige Lampen is a senior at Holland Christian High School.

She will attend Purdue University to major in chemical engineering.

Paige is active in the school’s Science Olympiad program and theater club.

“From a young age, I’ve always strived to prove to others that I can do anything I set my mind to,” Paige shared in her essay submission. “The STEM field is getting increasingly more inclusive, and I am proud to continue growing the percentage of women in STEM.” The Amanda Clark Scholarship was created in memory of a Gentex employee who earned a manufacturing engineering degree from Kettering University and worked at Gentex for 8 years, using her technical skills in a variety of roles.

“This year’s scholarship recipients have both expressed a desire to break down gender stereotypes regarding women in STEM and follow their passion for engineering into their secondary education,” said Gentex President and CEO Steve Downing. “We are proud to provide financial support through this scholarship to encourage them to stay committed to their career aspirations.”

The Amanda Clark Scholarship Program will begin accepting new applicants for the 2023-2024 school year on November 1, 2023.

Learning comes alive at Holland Christian Schools Rose Park Elementary thanks to Rose Park Ranch.

Miska Rynsburger, principal at Rose Park Elementary, surprised teachers with a visit to a school with a farm. After the visit, she asked staff what they thought of creating a ranch at Rose Park. They were fully committed.

“The teachers became inspired and bubbled over with ideas of what we could do creating a Rose Park Elementary version,” Miska says.

Thanks to generous donors in the community and enthusiasm from the school, the ranch moved forward with a greenhouse and small barn area housing two chickens and two goats.

“We ran into a roadblock when we learned Holland Township doesn’t allow agriculturally zoned animals in the plot of land where Rose Park is located,” Miska says.

The “roadblock” turned into a learning opportunity. All students engaged in a writing unit and two presented their papers at a township meeting asking for a change – and they received it!

Students love working to maintain the barn and the animals, along with a plethora of plants and vegetables in the adjacent greenhouse. Besides learning how to care for and nurture plants, students learn about biodiversity.

“In the greenhouse, aphids tried to eat the plants which we don’t want because we want the plants,” Rose Park Elementary student Beckett says. So, the students researched the issue and added ladybugs to the greenhouse “because ladybugs eat the aphids,” Beckett added.

Zeeland Zoom 5k Rescheduled for August 8 The 14th Annual Zeeland Zoom 5K and Little Zoomers Kids Run will be rescheduled for Tuesday, August 8, 2023.
