A NOTE FROM OUR HEAD OF SCHOOL Each of you should use whatever gifts you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. 1 Peter 4:10
You were created for a purpose, but not just any purpose. You were created with a gift for the purpose of serving others as a way of being a faithful steward of the grace God has given you.
I shared this reflection with our staff at the beginning of the school year, and it holds true for our community as we make our way through first semester:
How wonderful would it be in this self-centered world of “tik tok famous,” of going viral, if every student in our care this year left our classrooms each and every day knowing On Caledesi Island in Florida, if you walk down the beach that their Creator God loves them, that He made them away from the crowds, there is an old worn bench that simply with a unique gift that they are to use to serve others, and says, “To Marge. She loved this beach.” I don’t know what it that doing so is their way of being faithful stewards of the was about the particular day I was there, but I sat on the bench grace God showed us by sending His son Jesus to earth? and thought of Marge and her husband and imagined them What if every student understood that they have the enjoying this beach together. ability to advance God’s Kingdom? Since that day, I’ve told April and the kids not to buy me a Can you picture this? A school where every person uses his casket but instead to get me a bench and put it in a shady spot or her gifts to serve others? with the dedication, “For Tim. He loved sitting in the shade (and sandwiches).” Of course, when we talk of each child learning about their unique gifts to serve God and serve others, I can’t help but Last week I ran into a school mom on the street outside the think about Barb Newman. It’s hard to believe it was only school. This mom has battled cancer for several years and also last fall that we lost Barb. This is the first school year in 34 has an adult daughter who is also battling a chronic illness. years that Barb is not starting the year with us. This family is always heavy on my heart and I pray for them often. After telling her this and as I walked away, I said, “Hang I know Barb would’ve loved the theme for this year. She in there.” would’ve stood up in front of us today and pulled out her puzzle piece, reminding us that we have each been She said, “I tell my husband to put on my tombstone, ‘She given strengths and weaknesses, and the beauty of God’s hung in there.’” plan for us is that we need each other. In 1 Corinthians 12 we learn that my piece fits together with yours, and all Isn’t that beautiful? She hung in there. There’s something so together we are the body of Christ. No piece is higher in beautiful about a follower of Christ serving faithfully through stature than the other and we are incomplete without each adversity. other. The world is fascinated by being remembered, and, if we’re honest, we might at times be distracted by this as well. We are created with a purpose, but that purpose is not to be remembered for loving a certain beach...or for loving sandwiches (although I really, really do love a good sandwich).
You were created for a purpose.
We are “Created for a Purpose.” Use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. I want to remind you of this truth today so you can remind your students of this truth every single day.

OFFICER BRIAN BREUKER, ZCS CLASS OF ‘95 School Resource Officer--Zeeland Police Department
On any given day at ZCS, you might spot Officer Brian Breuker connecting with students in the hallway, enjoying a cup of coffee while chatting with parents in the front reception area, or talking with a class about personal safety and sharing tips on how to make good decisions. A graduate of Zeeland Christian, Brian is now the Police Liaison for all Zeeland city schools. This allows him the opportunity to be at ZCS and to help in a variety of ways, and it offers Zeeland Christian the benefit of having a familiar police presence almost daily. As a regular visitor at ZCS, Brian thinks back on his time as a student with fondness: “A small portion of the school is still the same as when I was there,” he shares. “This always brings back good memories.” Some of Brian’s standout memories include the winter Olympics and Field/Friendship Day, “I thought it was such a great thing that we all had sleds to use at recess,” he says. “What other school does that?” When it comes to stand-out teachers who made a positive mark on Brian’s ZCS experience, he readily names a few: “Mr. Teune was one of my favorite teachers. I remember his kindness and grandfatherlike qualities. I was also in Mr. Joustra’s first class at ZCS. I’m sure we did not make it easy on him, but he was also one of my favorite teachers and it’s fun to return to his classroom every year.” Thinking of other
teachers who had an impact on his school career, Brian shares a lesson that stays with him years later: “Mrs. Zastrow and I laugh about this now, but I recall being in trouble with a group of boys in middle school for being disrespectful in her class. Instead of going out for recess, we had to count pop can tabs in her room in silence for a week. That incident stuck with me, and I remember it as a good reminder to respect those in authority.” Brian notes his gratitude for experiences like this and others, and for “the opportunity to grow up in such a special place. The staff was always so kind and they made sure we understood that we are all a part of God’s world. This was shown to us by the CLC/ Inclusion program. ZCS has always had a family feel to it.” Now, Brian is using his profession, time, and gifts to give back to Zeeland Christian: “I enjoy my position at ZPD. As the Police Liaison for all Zeeland city schools...I have time to be at ZCS and help in any way that I can. I never really knew any police officers by name growing up. Having a positive interaction with the police can go a long way. I’m getting to the point that some of the students I have taught are now driving, and I end up seeing them outside of school more often. I’ve gotten to know so many different students in Zeeland, and almost always for a positive reason. Very rarely do we have a police issue in the schools, but I think the students know they can come to me and the police in general if they need help. I’m also able to assist in all types of
6
drills such as fire and lockdown drills. I can attest that all of the ZCS staff take these drills seriously and the safety of the entire building is the main concern.”
Department. I think that after high school is when I actually focused on a career choice, but ZCS helped with the base of making good choices and the importance of having a servant’s heart.”
Years ago when he started his current position, Brian also accepted an invitation from Mrs. Zastrow to help with 7th grade camp each year. He shares that this is now a highlight of his school year: “Camp Roger was a special place for me already and now I’m able to be there and help out ZCS. The focus that ZCS has on camp is great. I can tell that the kids and staff love the camps.” Brian adds that he has seen firsthand how ZCS camp experiences allow students and staff to grow, both individually and as a class.
With seven years under his belt in his current role, Brian feels that watching ZCS continue to grow has been a blessing: “I love to talk to the students in the various safety lessons we discuss. The questions and what-ifs keep me on my toes and it’s fun to see them so excited to learn. I like to think that with all the safety topics we have covered, [I’ve] helped some students stay safe by encouraging them to always ask themselves, “Is this a good choice?”
When asked whether his time at ZCS influenced his decision to become a police officer, Brian reflects the following:
There’s no doubt that Officer Breuker continues to have a significant impact on the life of ZCS and the students that benefit from meeting him and being encouraged by his steady and consistent presence. We’re grateful for all he offers to our school, students, and staff, and we’re proud to claim him as one of our own. Thank you, Brian, for your service to our school and to the City of Zeeland!
“I remember the focus of inclusivity and the CLC [inclusion program]. This helped mold an understanding of treating everyone with respect. ZCS taught the principles of respect, honor, and love for others. These values translate to a career in service at the Police

Teacher Spotlight Luke DeVries by Megan Smith
Music and worshiping God go hand in hand at Zeeland Christian School. More often than not, you’ll hear some form of music whenever you’re visiting. It might be a song being played over a speaker, instruments reciting a new piece in the band room, or the voices of students singing together in the classroom. No matter the medium, music is a favorite and well-loved form of praising God among the ZCS community. This year, Zeeland Christian is proud to welcome Luke DeVries as the new 2nd-8th grade Music Teacher/Band Director. Luke graduated from Calvin University in May, bringing his fresh and enthusiastic outlook to our music program.
This is Luke’s first year teaching, but he’s spent most of his life preparing for this role. Luke discovered his passion for music at a very young age. Starting with encouragement from his own elementary music teacher, Mrs. Bouwman, and his piano teacher, Mrs. Laninga (also a former ZCS grandmother!), Luke was given the encouragement to pursue his musical gifts with confidence. Throughout his childhood he enjoyed playing the piano for church, participating in his school band, and singing in the choir. Even in elementary school, Luke knew that God was using music to prepare something special for his future. By the time he reached middle school and high school, he was already imagining a career in teaching.
8
Luke grew up attending Byron Center Christian School and South Christian High School and was directly impacted by how special Christian education can be. Because of this, it was an easy and exciting decision to take the opportunity available at ZCS this year. Luke’s mission as a teacher is to help students see God’s creativity through the gift of music. His goal is to equip students with the skills and passion to worship the great God who made them. When Luke isn’t teaching, he enjoys spending time outside, taking in God’s creation. You might also find him running, working on various projects, and traveling. Even in his spare time, Luke still finds joy in creating music and picking up new instruments. All of these hobbies are ways that Luke finds helpful in discovering new things he can incorporate in his teaching. Luke gives all credit to God when it comes to the perfect plan that has led him to ZCS. He feels lucky to serve God in this special role and inspire others. Partnering with parents, inclusive education, and language immersion are all things that he knew he could contribute to and grow from. The support from administration, staff, and families has provided Luke a daily reminder that he’s home at Zeeland Christian.

When it comes to music, Kendra Gontjes leads with the goal of helping each of her students to see themselves as true musicians. Whether it be singing, playing an instrument, or even writing a song, Kendra recognizes that this challenge looks different for everyone. Kendra utilizes musical expression to help her students grow in confidence and appreciate that God has made them each in a unique and special way. Music has always been a huge part of Kendra’s life, but she didn’t quite know how significantly that would
10
affect her long term plans. Regularly participating in school programs, singing in choir, and performing in church fueled her passion for music growing up. When it came time to decide what she would study in college, it only seemed natural to carry out her love of music through teaching. Kendra received her Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Calvin College. When she began her search for a teaching position, an open role at ZCS immediately caught her eye. Her dad and
grandmother had attended Zeeland Christian as children, and Kendra knew in her heart that God was leading her right where she was meant to be. Now in her third year at ZCS, Kendra teaches Y5-1st grade music and middle school choir. She also leads the middle school worship team and is currently working on the upcoming 7th and 8th grade musical. Kendra loves the positive environment at ZCS. Being able to come to work everyday and do what she loves is even more enjoyable knowing that she is supported
by such a genuine group of people, where she is always received with love. Outside of teaching, Kendra can be found spending quality time with her husband, Jaymes, and dog, Oliver. Together they enjoy walking/hiking, going to dog parks, and exploring new cities. Kendra is also taking classes at Oakland University to obtain her Master’s degree in Music Education.

A LETTER FROM OUR BOARD PRESIDENT Dear Parents and Guardians,
As I reflect on Peter’s teachings, his desires are also my desires for the school, the teachers, and the Board of Zeeland Christian School. In times of hardship, I pray we would recognize our call to look more like Christ and less like the world. That we would know we are all equipped with God-given gifts for HIS glory and for the furthering of His kingdom. Our gifts and talents are not for our own gain, but to encourage and edify the body of believers. We need to look no further than the very life of Christ who maintained a triumphant attitude during hostility, hatred, and death. May Jesus be our example of how to use ‘whatever gifts you have received to serve others as faithful stewards.’ May Jesus himself be our motivation for giving selflessly and compel us to live lives that demonstrate that kind of love to all those around us.
What a fantastic start to the school year it has been! We have witnessed the faithful hand of God by watching our student body gather again for an outside Chapel, we have experienced our middle schoolers lead in love at middle school camp, and we have witnessed the power of teachers gathered again to spur each other on through prayer and fellowship. We have so much to praise God for and it’s just the beginning! This year’s theme comes from 1 Peter 4:10 and is a verse I hope you have heard several times thus far, “Each of you should use whatever gifts you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” To best understand this verse, we must consider the context in which it was written. Peter, the known author, was a leader among Christ’s apostles and was among the few men that were personally called and commissioned by Christ himself. Peter was an eyewitness to the life, death and resurrection of Christ and experienced incredibly high highs, and low lows, as documented in the book of Acts. Peter’s intent for writing his first letter was to address the Christians who were being persecuted by Nero, the Emperor of the time. Peter’s letter came as believers were facing escalating persecution and Peter’s desire was to teach the readers how to live victoriously amid the hostility. He yearned for the people to live without losing hope, to live without becoming bitter, and to live a life that evangelized the world through exemplary living.
Parents, it is an honor to serve as Board Chair for Zeeland Christian School. Please know that on behalf of the Board we, too, are committed to using the gifts we have received as faithful stewards for the glory of God. May all that we do bring hope to the watching world. Faithfully in Christ, Geoff Bremer ZCS School Board Chair

Q+A with Brian and Betsy Shafer ZCS Standing Stone Society Members
Q: Why is including ZCS in your planned giving important to you? We see ZCS providing a welcoming educational environment to kids in West Michigan and want to be sure that continues for years to come. We have watched our children learn so much academically and seen them grow emotionally and spiritually at ZCS. They love going to school! They have built strong friendships and connections with their classmates, and their teachers influence them daily to show Jesus’ love through their words and actions. Our kids are a part of the Mandarin Immersion program, which not only teaches them a new language, but introduces them to other cultures and allows them to see people from other parts of the world the way that Jesus does--as His people, created in His image. Q: Why is growing the ZCS endowment a priority for you? We understand that the endowment helps to keep tuition costs down and allows as many families as possible to benefit from a Christian education for their children. We see the value of our children coming home with not just Bible stories and memory verses, but a Christian perspective on all that they learn, and we would love for that to be an option for all families to experience. Q: What would you encourage other families to do if they are considering joining the Standing Stone Society? The process of setting up ZCS as a beneficiary in our living trust was very straightforward. We would encourage any other families considering the same to chat with their estate planner about what makes sense for them. The Zeeland Christian School Endowment Fund is a collection of charitable donations that have been combined and invested. The primary source of funding is through wills, trusts, and adding ZCS as a beneficiary to retirement accounts. The current fund balance is over $7.3 million. A portion of the income from the invested fund is paid back to Zeeland Christian to offset the cost of tuition. Over time, the Endowment Fund will continue to grow, providing more money for the school to use to keep tuition costs down.
For more info about the Standing Stone Society, please email Peter Jenkins at pjenkins@zcs.org
The Zeeland Christian Endowment Fund was established in 1984 and has already paid over $3 million to ZCS! Please consider adding ZCS to your estate plan to leave a legacy of generosity and make a forever impact on students’ lives.

A NOTE FROM PETER JENKINS, DIRECTOR OF ADVANCEMENT As I sat and listened to a parent in our elementary principal’s office recently, I was once again reminded why I love Zeeland Christian School. Earlier that day I’d been told there was a mom who had called three times over the past two days. The third time she asked if she could come for a tour right away. Mom’s primary language is Spanish, so Betsy Koop, ZCS elementary principal who speaks Spanish, moved her schedule around, and the mom came in with her child. I happened to be outside taking pictures when mom showed up with her son. Regretfully, I do not speak Spanish, but she was very gracious to me and through our limited understanding of each other’s language, she arrived at Mrs. Koop’s office. After walking around for a tour, mom knew she wanted her son at ZCS but also knew she couldn’t afford the cost of tuition. She is a single mom, who works full-time at a local Zeeland company making around $24,000/yr. When the discussion turned to tuition assistance, Mrs. Koop asked me to join the conversation; I will never forget what happened next. I sat and listened as this mom shared her heart in Spanish with Mrs. Koop. She spoke in words I do not understand, but the tone and the look on her face was recognizable and clear. I could tell that she wanted a Christian education for her son--just about
more than anything else in the world. Mrs. Koop translated her words and affirmed that, yes, that’s what she was communicating. Why I love Zeeland Christian School and its community is because when you read this story, I know you’re already asking, “What does she need?” or “How can we make this happen?” I have a front row seat to YOUR generosity. And it’s because of the generosity of this community that we were able to offer a financial aid package where mom is still having to make sacrifices, like many of you have/are, but at a level that makes a Christian education accessible. There are over 70 families at ZCS receiving tuition assistance. Our tuition assistance fundraising goal for this year end is $350,000--the largest it’s ever been. When I realized this was our goal, the Verse of the Day from my YouVersion Bible app was Proverbs 3:5-6: 5 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight So, here we go. $350,000 to make sure every family who wants a Christian education at ZCS can access one for their children. Thank you for considering a gift this year-end. You can give via the return envelope in The Bell or online at www. zcs.org/give. Thank you for considering Zeeland Christian in your year-end giving and a special thank you to all of our sustaining EMBER givers who support ZCS on a monthly basis.

Maggie also shares that she’s grown and changed a lot as a student at ZCS, “My outgoingness and willingness to talk to people has improved a lot since middle school. I found a way to put myself out there more because I became more comfortable.” Maggie attributes this change to her connections with teachers and their willingness to work with her to best fit her learning style.
The ZCS graduating class of 2022 is blessed with thoughtful, talented, invested students, and 8th grader Maggie Miller is among them. Mr. Paauw recently recognized Maggie for the following: “Maggie is a small group leader in my group for middle school and has been extra considerate of one of her classmates and the value of inclusion when the student wanted to be a leader after we launched the groups. Maggie accepted him as another leader joining her in our group and spent time letting me know how we can enfold him in roles where he will be successful, as well as which parts of activities may stress him out.”
When asked which of her teachers she’d like to exemplify later in life, Maggie highlights Mrs. Zastrow, “She understood how anxious I got all of the time and found what worked best for me, like how I didn’t enjoy presenting in front of people because I got nervous. She worked with me so I could do the work in my own way. I learned how I could be the same way if I become a teacher.”
Maggie is a kind, empathetic student who values how well her classmates get along and appreciates her teachers, too. When asked what she loved about ZCS, Maggie shared, “I think it’s just how well organized it is all of the time. [Our school] is well-taken care of, the students are all very nice, and the teachers create a bond with you so that you feel comfortable. Even if you don’t have things in common with a teacher, they still make you very comfortable where you are.”
When she’s not at school, Maggie enjoys being close to home and sharing the simple things with her family. She’s recently developed a love for bike riding and makes a point to get outside when she wants to clear her head. In her free time, Maggie also enjoys drawing, latch hooking, tennis, and skiing. Asked about her 8th grade experience so far, Maggie reflects that ZCS has gotten even better with time. She appreciates Mr. Paauw and how there are clear expectations for behavior and discipline under his leadership. Reciprocally, Mr. Paauw recognizes that Maggie is among a group of students who “have bright personalities, who smile daily and encourage others--who shine Christ through their actions and interactions.” It’s because of students like Maggie and her classmates and dedicated teachers that ZCS continues to burn bright!
After graduating, Maggie expects she’ll remember how caring everyone is, “Our grade gets along well and teachers are able to adapt well to students. In Life Together class, our teacher was able to get us all laughing and joking together on a subject, so we still had fun.”

What do you love about working at ZCS? I love working at ZCS because I love the strong sense of community! There is so much effort put into making sure that all students feel welcomed, accepted, and valued.
What do you love about working at ZCS? ZCS has the best, most supportive, caring community of teachers that I have ever experienced. I felt this as a parent when we moved here in 2019 and it has been affirmed now that I am a part of the staff and have gotten to know others professionally. The focus on relationships and community at ZCS is apparent.
Why are you passionate about Christian education? I’m passionate about Christian education because I love to be able to share the love of Christ with my students. I enjoy getting to teach from a Christian perspective and getting to see my students grow in their faith.
Why are you passionate about Christian education? Christian education is such a gift that we can give to our children. Being raised in public schools, I did not realize how much I was missing out on until we made the decision to enroll our children in a Christian school. Love God, Love Kids, and Love Learning --three things that I am passionate about and I’m grateful for the emphasis placed on these at our school.

What do you love about working at ZCS? Our family has been a part of ZCS since our son, James, began attending three school here! We knew right away that there was something special and unique about this school. I love that all children of varied learning abilities and styles are treasured and valued as important pieces of the ZCS puzzle! Why are you passionate about Christian education? I was blessed to have received a Christian education through Holland Christian and Calvin University. As one of four girls in my family, I knew this was a serious commitment for my parents and I am very grateful for the sacrifices they made to provide that for me. I always knew I wanted to teach, and being at a Christian school-one that strives to be inclusive of different languages and learning abilities, is so important to me!

What do you love about working at ZCS? The team that I am blessed to work with at ZCS is truly amazing, I know they have my back both at work and outside of work. My students fill my days with joy, laughter, life, questions, and curiosity, and I enjoy interacting with their families as well. I have also been amazed at the community ZCS has built and how it supports, prays for, and encourages one another, from administration to extended care, from support services to teachers and assistants, and everyone in between. Why are you passionate about Christian education? There are two main reasons I am passionate about Christian education. The first is that working in nature based education, I value being able to talk about God, the Creator, instead of just the creation. The second is that God calls us to have a childlike faith, and helping plant seeds in my students’ lives and seeing their faith helps me grow in mine.

I was introduced to Christian education during my time studying at Calvin University. My favorite part of Christian education is being able to partner with parents to raise their children in a way that is going to honor and glorify God. It is such a privilege to be blessed with that opportunity and to see students live out their faith daily.
Why are you passionate about Christian education? Christian education not only teaches kids academics, it teaches them about God. It challenges them to not only grow in their own faith, but to share that faith with others.
