We are a family of passionate, creative misfits who believe that every young kiwi is creative and who dedicate our lives to helping them discover, express and develop their unique creativity.

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT The early english definition of the word mongrel is related to mingle and among. We often think, at Zeal, we need to be on the fringe of society to be relevant to the young people we serve. Our places are filled with the marginalised, forgotten, the loners and lost.

Unfortunately, in many cases our communities and families have put them there. So our challenge every day is how do we create a place of belonging that won’t judge. A place that meets you where you are at and gives you a glimmer of hope.

Running an organisation like Zeal is never easy. You will see in this Annual Report that we achieve so much measurable change. Everyday we are absolutely committed in our pursuit to make a difference in the lives of young people.

The challenge, as always, is that the need, sadly, is huge – the time and resources are often limited.

We run Zeal on a very tight and often unachievable budget. But the commitment of the board, CEO and staff keeps us delivering. So here is my challenge – if you are reading this and you want to invest in absolute change in our communities in Aotearoa,

you would be hard pressed to find a better, more impacting, tightly-run NGO. We get it done.

It is important to acknowledge the incredible work of Brook Turner, who led Zeal for a decade and moved on in March of 2017. Matt Grey, who has a seven-year history at Zeal and possesses a dedication to young people that I have rarely encountered, has replaced him at the helm. Our staff and volunteers at Zeal really are the best of the best. Our board is also driven to govern Zeal with integrity and we make sure every dollar raised reaches as far as it can.

We are here to stay – we will not rest – we will “mingle among” and do what it takes to make a difference in the lives of young people in Aotearoa.

We are Zeal and we are proud to be mongrels.

CEO’S REPORT Matt Grey CEO

This year has been one of real change both for Zeal and for me. In April of this year, I moved from being the General Manager at Zeal to taking over as CEO. I have very big shoes to fill from our outgoing CEO, Brook Turner. Brook is charismatic, innovative and a true visionary. I could have tried to imitate his leadership style, but I knew I had to work from my greatest strength – the joy I have in seeing others thrive. I love to develop others, watching them as they start to believe in themselves and work out their full potential. I will be doing my best to see my staff and the young people we serve thrive through a high, consistent level of care.

°° Over the last twelve months at Zeal, we have a lot to be proud of. One stand-out is our Street Youth Work project, which has grown to new levels, beginning in Hamilton and expanding into three new suburbs in West Auckland. We have developed a model of practice to go to where our most vulnerable young people are, gaining their confidence and respect through genuine care. Our goal is that these young people, who are often written-off by others, start to see their worth and that they have something to contribute to their communities.

Joseph is one of these young people. Life was stable for Joseph throughout school, but when he left he felt lost, not knowing what to do next. He ended up falling into an addiction with synthetics, leaving home because of shame and living under a nearby bridge. But one of our youth workers didn’t give up on him. Over months of consistent care, Joseph finally decided to enter rehab in hopes of a better future.

We don’t know what the future holds for Joseph, but we do know that there will be a Zeal youth worker journeying alongside him. My dream is to increase Zeal’s presence in Aotearoa – not for the sake of growth, but that we can work with other incredible organisations to positively influence the lives of our rangatahi.

Highlights

This year at Zeal West we extended our creative arts programmes, with over 80 young people taking part. We showcased the talent of the students in two Zeal-produced showcases and multiple gallery exhibitions both in-house and offsite.

Our afternoon hangs programme continued to provide a safe place of belonging to West Auckland young people and saw large growth in the number of external providers and community organisations working with us to deliver more collaborative initiatives.

Over the year, we have become active beyond our four walls with the Zeal school tour heading into

more schools than ever, spreading as far north as Kaipara and as far south as Manurewa. Through this project, we interacted with and engaged over 10,000 young people.

Our Street Youth Work programme has a new breath of life and we were enabled to expand and further resource the work of our team on the streets of West Auckland.

MARA’S STORY At year 10, Mara started bouncing from mainstream schooling to alternative education. When she started coming to Zeal she had been moved on from almost every PTE in West Auckland. She was involved with the wrong crowd and would start many fights at Zeal.

We introduced her to our youth workers and, though the journey has been challenging, she is now in a steady course, has found a passion for pacific dance and has become a mainstay at Zeal that other young people look up to.

She is a role-model with a huge future and story that will help other young people.

HAMILTON Highlights

Partnership was Zeal Hamilton’s focus over the last year, collaborating with organisations to provide opportunities for Hamilton’s rangatahi to share their creativity. Building relationships is imperative for Zeal – it bridges young people to creative outlets in our venue and wider Hamilton.

We worked alongside NZ Red Cross to provide creative opportunities for refugee-background young people, exhibiting their work at Waikato Museum.

We’ve partnered with Great Potentials Foundation to deliver the Mentoring and Tutoring Education Scheme (MATES), and Waikato Queer Youth moved into our shared space.

This year we also launched our Street Youth Work pilot, engaging over 600 young people in six months, highlighted by the organic growth of authentic

relationships of care. We’re excited to continue this important work thanks to Momentum Waikato’s support.

More young people add to the diversity and culture of our space. As we deepen relationships with our whanau we’re entrusted with stories of hardship and resilience. Our dedicated youth workers have truly created a space for Hamilton rangatahi to call ‘home’.

JASON’S STORY

Jason first came to Zeal after enrolling in our photography programme in 2016. At the time he was Year 13 and homeschooling, as he wasn’t supported at his high school. We quickly learnt that Jason was an incredible musician. We got him performing at an acoustic show and he quickly became a staple of these events.

Highlights Zeal had a really amazing year in the Hawke’s Bay, with loads of new initiatives to engage young people in our region.

Our large events continue to be very popular with young people in the Hawke’s Bay. Over the 12-month period we held six large events engaging over 2,500 attendees. Each of our events has a different flavour – including hip hop showcases, talent quests, a Paint Party, and even a Colour Fun Run. This helps us engage a diverse range of young people.

With a focus on being as mobile as possible, we continued to grow youth creativity through our mobile Music Box, teaching guitar, drums, bass and key-

board in communities across the region. Activating this unit during school holiday times, we would often see over 60 young people per day.

We’re also excited to begin offering programmes in our new Design Box, teaching graphic design, web design and photography, giving young Hawke’s Bay creatives skills for future work.

Grow our Zeal Hawke’s Bay team through bringing on youth work interns Continue to support the Napier Youth Council and provide leadership opportunities for them.

Develop a mobile Trailer Stage, enabling us to more easily deliver events across the region.

In 2017, we delivered a series of Event Bootcamps across our Zeal centres – a one-day intensive training for young people interested in event management.

Gabby connected to Zeal through the Event Bootcamp in the Hawke’s Bay and has become heavily involved in Zeal since. She has involved herself in everything that Zeal offers here in the Hawke’s Bay and contributes regularly at our events as a volunteer.

— I have loved getting involved with Zeal. The events have been a blast. They are all really friendly and I am starting to learn new skills at the events I help at. It’s been awesome. I’ve loved it. Gabby, 16

Highlights This year has seen rapid growth in Zeal Kāpiti.

Connections with local colleges have sparked a growing number of events in the area, with Zeal staff and interns supporting young people to make them happen!

The Zeal Music Box (our second satellite service unit) was launched early in the year and has since had over 500 young people interact with this mobile music studio.

Officially launching on Waitangi Day in Ōtaki, the Zeal Music Box has spent time in Ōtaki College before moving to Paraparaumu College, where we

currently run a weekly lunchtime programme. Kāpiti College is next on the list, where there are a large number of young bands eagerly waiting to perform.

In other exciting news, after two and a half years we have raised the funding needed to begin re-furbishing our building! Excitement is building for the opening of the centre in mid-2018.

°° HANNAH’S STORY Hannah signed up to our event management course in 2017. Part way through, Hannah was offered the opportunity to manage the Visa Wellington On A Plate food truck rally, a two-night event where Zeal was running a youth musicians stage. Hannah applied her learning and did an amazing job, organising tech and musicans, and loving the responsibility.

WELLINGTON Highlights This was a massive year for Zeal Wellington. After eight years in our Ghuznee Street facility, we were displaced by the earthquake. Though we were sad to leave, it provided us with the chance to continue to innovate in our development of young people. After exiting the building, we entered full pop-up mode, running events at venues around the city and a youth stage at Cuba Dupa Festival. This gave us a new found freedom of going to young people rather than relying on them to come to us.

At Zeal Wellington, our most central goal is to be a place of belonging for young people in the city. Both our afternoon hangs and creative programmes continued in various spaces around the city. In this time, we saw the community grow in both number and retention of young people, proving that although we lost our house, we didn’t lose the home that is Zeal Wellington.

Sean first came to Zeal through our afternoon hangs community, and soon completed both the sound & audio engineering course and our event management internship. After connecting with two other students, Sean started a band called Mishap which has grown a loyal following in Wellington.

Having graduated high school, Sean now tutors the sound & audio engineering course he once took. We are so thrilled when we can continue young people’s development through employment.

— Zeal got me started with my first job, introduced me to the music scene and how it runs and I met most of my close friends there. I owe a huge amount of gratitude towards Zeal. Sean, 19

REZPECT DANCE ACADEMY

Highlights This year was the start of Rezpect Dance Academy’s journey with Zeal. Zeal has brought amazing growth and reach to what we do.

The growth we experienced included moving to a new, larger dance studio, receiving funding to run community dance classes, having a large increase in the number of dancers we reach weekly across all our programmes, and being awarded the Jetstar Jump Start grant. This grant allowed four of our tutors to train in the USA over seven weeks.

We now currently have ten dance crews with 87 dancers, six classes with 85 dancers, and six community dance classes with 92 dancers in attendance each week. This is a total of 264 young people each week.

We have also experienced a large amount of community support, having over 450 people in attendance at our end of term showcases and being awarded the month of June in our local heroes calendar.

In 2016, Te Au heard about our programmes through his friends and began his dance journey with us.

Before Rezpect, Te Au describes his life as “simple and basic, without many interests and no goal for what I wanted to achieve with my life.” Through his journey with Rezpect, Te Au has become a confident young person who is currently training to become an Assistant Tutor.

— Rezpect is a place where I have found a passion and drive for life. From struggling with the feeling of having to meet people’s expectations, feeling lost in life, to now finding a sense of belonging and drive to accomplish more. Te Au, 16

Andrew Sutherland Highlights This year started with a visit to Christchurch, training our next set of Live For Tomorrow Chapters students.

This makes 20 active Chapters in schools around the country, delivering health promotion initiatives and starting the conversation around mental wellbeing with an audience of 30,000 young people.

We delivered content that made a difference through social media, ranging from daily messages of hope and positive change, to the Live For Tomorrow Photo Challenge (10 moments of mindfulness, participated in by over 2,000 young people and reaching up to 3 million!), to the conclusion of The Great Mental Health Experiment video series featuring our very own intern @itsyourbethfriend!

Finally, in partnering with Vodafone New Zealand Foundation, and having surveyed over 1,000 New Zealand young poeple about their online behaviour, we piloted a first-of-its-kind proactive intervention service for young people expressing crisis through social media. We call it Online Crisis Intervention.

MYA’S STORY Mya is a member of a Live For Tomorrow Chapter in mid-Canterbury. Keen to learn more about how she could improve mental health and wellbeing in her school, Mya became one of our first Chapter Champions – a group of young people within our current Chapters taking on a peer leadership role.

Scottie Reeve Stories Espresso Bars Manager

Highlights Over the past year, Stories and Georgia Espresso Bars in Wellington have trained 19 young people through first-time employment and work experience.

Through partnerships with local schools and businesses, our social enterprise cafes have provided opportunities for young people to learn employment skills in a real-world hospitality environment, with many going on to secure long-term employment.

We have also seen rangatahi overcome challenges relating to their mental health and relationships as

a result of our unique model, where young people are both up-skilled by expert hospitality staff and mentored by experienced youth workers.

During the past year, Zeal’s social enterprise initiatives have continued to grow their positive presence in our local community through city-wide initiatives such as the Wellington Advent Calendar and inclusion in a Cuba Street Recipe Book to be published

by Penguin in 2019.

STORIES ESPRESSO BARS

TIFFANY’S STORY Tiffany joined the Stories team after finding mainstream education and alternative schools weren’t the best fit for her. Tiffany quickly thrived in the Stories environment, growing her skills to the point where she became a shift manager. Tiffany has recently finished her time at Stories and secured full-time work as a barista at a local Wellington cafe.

EVENT BOX The Zeal Event Box is a ten tonne mobile stage truck with state-of-the-art sound system and lighting equipment, designed to bring alcohol-free events to communities all over Aotearoa.

Over the last twelve months, the Event Box visited 19 schools, creating celebration moments and performance opportunities, as well as involving groups of students in the planning and execution of events. Zeal’s inflatable soccer field accompanied the Event Box in many of its travels – and proved a big hit at schools.

Through the Event Box, we delivered Paint Parties in Auckland and Napier. With a great lineup of DJs and plenty of paint, these events provided a unique, exciting and alcohol-free experience for 1,500 young people.

As one of Zeal’s social enterprise initiatives, the Event Box was also hired out for events, employing 60 young people for over 2,500 hours.
