CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE Kia ora koutou katoa When you meet young people who are struggling, you soon realise that society likes to put labels on them. It is much easier for us to cope if we have our daily stereotypes.

Zeal chooses to be counter cultural. It quickly looks for the common ground of connection and plots a path to hope for our younger generation.

Whether Zeal is your place to hangout, form a dance party, come to a band show, go to singer/songwriter nights, have band rehearsals, learn through photography & film workshops and barista training, or even be part of a crew of young people running your own event, Zeal will use the creative arts to develop the next generation. No labels, no boxes and no judgement: Just dedicated people and talent running purpose-built youth facilities for 13 – 25 year olds.

Zeal is passionate about bringing positive change and hope to the next generation. Our venues in Wellington and West Auckland host thousands of young people every year creating a safe “hang” space that allows freedom of expression. Our third space - Zeal Hamilton - is on the horizon and launching soon! Keep watching this space as we continue to look at other viable parts of New Zealand to spread our positive and creative message. Why? Because we know our approach works!

Brook Turner and his team of dedicated people will stop at nothing to be the voice of welcome and encouragement to bands, artists and youth wanting to learn how to lead and change the direction of their lives. It is pretty inspiring! Not only that, just take some time to look at Zeal Voice and see how music can help young people recognise the destructive power of alcohol abuse. Through music they get they see their musical heroes paint a more supportive, alternative and positive picture for life, without alcohol – no blame just common sense. Our promise to you is that we will have the best infrastructure and systems; commercially smart but not-for-profit in nature! CEO’S REPORT Zeal develops and cares for young people by using the creative arts and a variety of pathways to strengthen groups and individuals. Zeal primarily outworks this approach by operating youth facilities in metropolitan areas that become places of belonging for many of New Zealand’s young people.

Instrumental in Zeal’s work is the idea that young people need opportunities to be courageous contributors to the world in which they reside.

For Zeal, the aim is to create pathways for genuine contributions to be made by young people in a field of their interest. Instead of retreating to the sidelines, young people are welcomed into an environment of possibility, with a commitment and belief from staff to nurture and encourage the creativity in every individual.

It is easy to look at all of these numbers and not see the significance of genuine development occurring in an individual.

While the numbers of the last year speak of Zeal’s “reach” as an organisation, the stories are what define our success year to year. Here is one from Danny, who I recently met on a plane between Auckland and Wellington.

In 2012 this resulted in 2790 young people performing at Zeal events.

These events saw an incredible 23,175 young people through Zeal doors, creating Zeal’s first point of engagement.

Following on from these events Zeal saw 3944 young people attend one or more pathways, honing their skills in a particular discipline.

But throughout the energy and busyness of all Zeal’s programmes, a consistent daily connection point was offered to young people at our venues, creating face-to-face interactions with 55,333 young people.

“Zeal played a significant part in my life. As a teenager I spent most Friday nights for about a year (around age 14-15) in Wellington city. The danger of this part of my life was the fact that I was carrying a knife, as were my friends from Porirua, with the intention to use it if provoked. So of course I ran the risk of doing something horrible to another human being, which I would have had to live with, as well as the punishment for that, or having something horrible happen to me.

I strongly believe that, in my case, Zeal provided a safe warm place that appealed to us at that age. If Zeal had not been present while I was in this period of my life, I would have surely been binge drinking in an alley around Wellington somewhere, which would have rarely lead to good outcomes.

I feel that I owe where I am now at least partially to Zeal and the safe environment provided in a stage of my life where I was prepared to perform extreme violence if threatened.

I am now a computer programmer at one of New Zealand’s top software development companies, which just recently obtained the Microsoft New Zealand partner of the year award from Microsoft. This sought-after position was obtained through the Summer of Tech programme, where I competed against over 500 students (postgraduate included) for 50 of them to be offered an internship.”

It is impossible to quantify the number of youth just like Danny who Zeal has never heard from, but his story serves as a reminder that even the smallest gesture of belief in a young person can significantly alter their trajectory in life.Zeal continues to seek the role of an “alongsider” to the young people frequenting our centres. For our staff, the belief in a young person’s ability to change and develop informs every interaction. Our desire is that young people are no longer reduced to being perceived as criminals, consumers or clients. These labels pigeonhole young people based on behaviours. We prefer instead to view young people as citizens; individuals with great hidden contributions waiting to be made to a world that is desperate for them.

Brook Turner | CEO

Bruce Pilbrow has been CEO of The Parenting Place since the beginning of 2007. He originally joined the organisation in 2005 after 15 years in sales and marketing. Bruce is responsible for the strategic, marketing and business direction of the organisation, and manages approximately 70 full and part-time staff as well as 600 volunteers. Bruce was a Commissioner for the Families Commission from June 2009 – June 2011. During this time he was also appointed Deputy Chief Commissioner and held the role of Acting Chief Commissioner for a number of months.

Jim McInnes has over 15 years experience in not-for-profit work. He has had hands on experience in managing youth focussed NGO’s with particular expertise in employment, volunteer management, governance, finance and fundraising, consulting, youth worker training, policy drafting and programme implementation.

Brook Turner is the CEO of the Zeal Education Trust and is currently enrolled in Unitec’s Master of Social Practice. Brook has 13 years youth work experience and is a sought after speaker on youth development issues in New Zealand. Brook possesses a passion for social change through community led projects and enterprise ventures. He is a firm believer that the community sector of New Zealand has an extraordinary opportunity to shape tomorrow for many kiwis. Brook sees the vital ingredients for such change as innovation, entrepreneurship, and a pursuit of greater equality across all ethnicities, genders and ages.

Tupetoa Ronald Tanielu (Ronji) Ronji is from the un-official capital of the universe - Mangere in South Auckland. He is a proud Samoan and Tokelauan. He has degrees in Law and Politics. He is currently a Social Policy Adviser for the Social Policy and Parliamentary Unit in the SalvationArmy. He also owns two small businesses - a consultancy firm and a security company. His interests are in faith-based community development, youth development, rugby league, zombie movies, reading books with pictures and anything to do with South Auckland...in that order! Ia manuia (God bless).

Jonathan Cutts Jonathan Cutts has over 25 years’ experience as an IT industry sales executive negotiating multimillion dollar contracts between the government and the private sector. He also has experience in consulting to large overseas IT and telecommunications companies. Jonathan has recently set up a photographic portraiture business in Wellington. He brings a wealth of business expertise and innovative and strategic thinking to the Zeal Board.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT MODELS TE WHARE TAPA WHĀ (DR MASON DURIE) This Māori Health Development model is informed by the notion that a young person is like a Wharenui, or meeting house. For the house to stand, all four walls must be strong and resilient. If one wall is weak it will put strain on the others, but if one wall is strengthened all become stronger.

THE CIRCLE OF COURAGE (LARRY BRENDTRO) This Native-American model suggests a journey to resilience for young people. The pathway begins with Belonging, a sense of acceptance, safety and value in a community. Young people then desire Mastery, to learn and achieve a new skill at a high standard. This leads to Indepedence, using their new-found confidence and skills to construct their own life and identity, and ends with Generosity as young people move forward in their new strength to contribute positively to their local community.

Zeal aims to implement Brendtro’s Circle of Courage across all areas of our programme. Through music events and after-school hours we provide a place where young people can grow quality relationships with peers and trained youth workers, finding belonging in an encouraging community.

Through Development Pathways, Zeal offers young people the chance to learn and master industry-standard skills in Photography, Espresso Making, Film and Music Production. Through Internships and Mentoring Zeal assists young people into tertiary study or employment, fostering independence and the strength to build their own lives. Finally, many of those young people who have found a place of strength and belonging at Zeal return as volunteers and mentors to other young people, showing generosity and a desire to be compassionate and encouraging to others.

WELLINGTON REPORT The strength of Zeal Wellington lies in the commitment of our youth workers to weave positive communities of young people together. We believe that the challenges young people face are best dealt with in the context of community, with adult role models establishing a culture in which peers can support one another. This has taken three key forms in the past year. Firstly, in after-school hours we have seen growth to over 50 young people visiting most days, many of them Year Nines who have just started at local high schools. Secondly, weekend events have seen a strong community of 50-60 Hardcore fans make Zeal home, writing original music and frequenting our rehearsal rooms. Finally, in the past year Zeal forged a partnership with IDEA Services, a subsidiary of IHC who equip intellectually disabled young people with skills for independence and employment. From 9am-3pm Monday to Friday Zeal is home to these young people who are delighted to have a mainstream space in which to host their programmes. Zeal is a community hub, a place for authenticity, creativity and diversity.

This community focus continues to expand as Zeal Wellington’s In-Schools Worker, Anna Macrae, is now in her second year at Wellington High School. There, she provides essential on-the-ground support to their pastoral care network through her presence in Maori classes, Roopu, Kapahaka, in-class support and the planning and promotion of many lunchtime events which add life and vibrancy to the culture of the school. Anna’s placement has also served to strengthen ties with WHS, allowing information sharing which allows better support of young people both inside and outside the school environment.

Many of the young people Anna works with most closely in-class are now regular participants at Zeal.

Continuing as we have for the past fourteen years, Zeal Wellington ran 60 drug-and-alcohol free weekend events for 15,000 young people including dance parties, hip hop shows, rock concerts, metal/hardcore gigs and singer/ songwriter showcases. Alongside key showcase events such as our annual Battle of the Bands, Zeal also began to forge crucial relationships in the music industry which are drawing higher-profile artists to the centre. A key contributing factor to this growth is recommencement of high school tours since acquiring a touring vehicle in August 2011. Through 15 high school concerts Zeal worked with some of the biggest names in Aotearoa music including Annah Mac, Zowie and Ruby Frost. Zeal also hosted the first New Zealand appearance of international heavy-weights Tonight Alive. These school appearances have promoted Zeal Wellington’s programmes to over 8,000 young people and have resulted in countless firsttime visitors to the centre.

While keeping young people safe in the city addresses a crucial need in Wellington, our team also recognises that it is not enough to simply ‘entertain’ young people. They require opportunities to create and to contribute – to feel that they have an influence on their setting and a voice. Zeal’s Development Pathways answer this desire in young people, providing the chance to learn new skills at an industrystandard in Photography, Film-Making and Barista/Espresso Making. In 2012 Zeal added an Advanced curriculum to our Barista training school due to the enormous volume of young people graduating the course (40 annually).

We felt it was important to provide an avenue for those passionate about employment in the hospitality sector to receive an additional ten weeks of training in cash-handling, presentation and the deeper intricacies of espresso making. Alongside this expansion, Zeal Wellington responded to the strength of Zeal West’s Film-Making Pathway by launching our own. With industry tutors from Weta Studios and local production houses, four students created and launched a music video for one of Zeal’s regular young bands.

In Leadership, Zeal Wellington’s Internship programme continues to involve young people proactively in shaping the present and the future culture of the organisation. Over the past year 18 event interns have been involved in running some of the most creative initiatives the organisation has ever seen. In July a Paint Party attracted over 400 young people to throw fluorescent paint over one another while illuminated under a wash of black-lights.

In September they held a Second Hand Clothing Market, drawing hundreds of young people and making over $1000. Zeal’s annual batch of interns continue to run events which have their finger on the pulse of youth culture in Aotearoa, shaping the direction of events and programmes for years to come.

Looking forward we are aware that, despite the growth of Zeal’s reach to young people, there are still many thousands who would access our service if they knew more about it. We are looking at better ways to increase awareness such as more effective use of social networking and a mobile application.

We are also striving to see Zeal become more connected outside the youth sector to coordinate with whanau and the local community for greater effect and support of young people. As we continue to grow we continue to learn, and from this we see the importance of our place in the community as a hub and an urban home for young people in Wellington.

ZACK MARSHALL’S STORY In 2006 we received a myspace message from a sixteen year-old drummer by the name of Zack Marshall. Zack was enthusiastic to help out however he could, turning up early to shows to get ready and helping with the pack down and clean up afterwards. “I went down for sound-check one Friday afternoon and instead of just watching I was thrown straight into it - mic’ing instruments and mixing the show!”

For our then crew of early-twenties-aged volunteers, Zack was a welcome addition to the team and quickly became Zeal’s resident sound geek. “I remember days when I’d finally ‘figure something out’ - after a few shows something would click in my head and I’d understand what that audio unit did, or work out something cool on the mixing desk that I couldn’t get my head around before. The first time I learned to use a graphic EQ was at ZEAL!” Zack continued to be involved in Zeal’s weekend shows until he left school at 18, when he made the decision to move to Sydney for study.

Seven years later Zeal Wellington began booking our largest tour yet with Australian band Tonight Alive.

Tonight Alive had just finished 38 shows all around the United States and were keen to get to New Zealand before their schedule booked up again. Wellington’s Venue Manager, Scottie Reeve began taking all the necessary steps booking accommodation, equipment and flights to make sure everything would run smoothly. Sony Music sent through a series of passport scans which were needed to secure the flights, one of which had a very familiar name on it. We brushed it off as an unlikely coincidence.

As emails began to fly back and forth we started to realise that the sixteen year old sound-enthusiast was now a twenty-three year old audio engineer and tour manager looking after one of the biggest up and coming bands in the world. Zack had spent the past two years touring throughout Japan, Europe and the States and would be joining us for a quick stop before heading to Indonesia and then back to the US for another 40 shows. The Zeal team were blown away.

When the band finally arrived in Aotearoa some weeks later there were many hugs and excited conversations. “It is a dream realised to see a young person who began at Zeal take their skills to a global stage,” said Wellington Manager Scottie Reeve. As we began the tour Zack started to feel right at home, “...I noticed exactly the same ethic that I remembered, except the team of young people had grown - a group of about 7-8 high-school-aged students who all seemed really enthused to be there and put on a show that night! “ Of course Zeal cannot take credit for Zack’s enthusiasm, passion and drive which has lead him to where he is now. Many hours of dedication and hard work have followed since his Zeal days. However, Zack’s story reinforces the value of what can happen when great youth workers are resourced to empower a young person to create, explore and dream a future for themselves. Whether in Photography, FilmMaking, Barista Training or sound and lighting, Zeal youth centres are the only places in New Zealand where young people are let-loose on equipment normally reserved for the elite.

Zack’s story is an example of what can happen when an incidental moment of trust ignites the creative spark in a young person. Imagine just how many stories like this one are waiting to be discovered.

“I believe that Zeal offers something that no other place does. I can’t think of any other venue that I’ve

seen that allows teenagers (or anyone for that matter) to just jump in and get hands-on. Zeal allowed me to take control of their PA and have a go at mixing shows with zero experience in other venues...Venues and bands want to hire people with experience, but where are young people supposed to get their foot in the door if they’ve never worked a show before? Zeal offers that chance.”

WEST AUCKLAND REPORT A finalist in the 2012 Music Managers Forum (MMF) Awards for top music venue in New Zealand, Zeal West is one of the best all-ages venues around and plays a crucial role in its local community. Being many things to many young people, Zeal is committed to the personal and social development of youth. It offers a youth centre and café, events and creative arts facilities, pathways training programmes, social support and, ultimately, community.

Now in Zeal’s fourth year in West Auckland it has established its place as a real home away from home to the youth in West Auckland and acts as a type of urban marae. Zeal West has gone from strength to strength and is continuing to see growth in its events, pathways training and activities offered to young people.

With new staff coming on board and existing staff moving up into new roles, 2012 was a year of new beginnings and new initiatives. This served to reaffirm our commitment to the local community and also generated excitement among community organisations we work with who are also committed to meeting the needs of West Auckland youth.

Hadliegh from “Suss-it” (The Youth Information Hub of West Auckland) says, “We are excited about the new direction Zeal is taking and believe it reflects the youth community as a whole in West Auckland. Suss-it has enjoyed the collaborative approach we have had together and look forward to working together in the future”.

One of our new initiatives has been building the hip-hop community at Zeal West. At the start of 2012 Zeal introduced “Open Floor” a weekly breakdancing forum where new people come and learn from established B’boys and B’girls in the art of breakdancing in a free-flowing environment. Being a weekly event meant kids could really get to know each other and establish Zeal as a safe meeting place where they could engage with a positive and fun activity.

We also introduced “Band Development” and “Beat Making” workshops, in collaboration with Marcus Powell (Crescendo Trust) of renowned New Zealand nu-metal band Blindspott. The programme takes young people through the process of making, perfecting and recording their own music, and getting advice on goal setting from someone within the music industry itself. It has been an overwhelming success, catering to young musicians of varying abilities and at all different stages in their music journeys.

These initiatives, together with other new initiatives in the music and creative arts space – such as making music videos and film internships – add to the popular events and programmes that are already established at Zeal West. Zeal’s monthly acoustic show and regular hardcore shows are well attended. Our boxing academy and barista training courses give young people new skills. And opportunities to volunteer in sound, lighting, event management and at the café for our events help to provide young people with ‘real world’ experience.

Looking ahead, Zeal West will be focused on social enterprise development – equipping young people for employment. This has come from a genuine need in the community Zeal West serves. There is a growing trend of young people out of work who are actively looking for work. In response, we have developed three new social enterprise initiatives in which we can provide training and, ultimately, a lead into employment opportunities for young people in West Auckland. These initiatives are: Zeal Apparel (screen-printing and design), Zeal Security (providing security for all Zeal events), and Café Partnership (partnering with a local café to provide training and employment).

We are pleased to say Zeal West has already successfully employed three young people through these social enterprise initiatives. Two of the young people have come up through Zeal’s boxing academy and are now qualified and employed as security guards here at Zeal.

The other young person is employed at a local café after training as a barista at Zeal.

He continues to be a valuable part of the Zeal community and is now training others in barista and café skills.

While we are hugely excited about our different initiatives and events, Zeal West is all about the young people, not the programmes – we continue to be committed to the individual.

Zeal West is privileged to be involved in young people’s lives and to provide not only personal and social development through music and the creative arts but also to provide care and support for young people in our community.

AS COLOUR FADES’ STORY As Colour Fades began in 2009, where we, a group of Massey High School students, thought it would be a good experience to enter the Nation-wide competition known as Smoke Free Rockquest. At the time we had one original song and a couple covers under our belt. Although our heat went terribly, we enjoyed the time we had on stage, finally playing to a crowd of people and we decided to pursue the love of music we had.

On one particular day, we heard about a cool new youth centre that was opening up very close to where we all lived. Although we were hesitant at first, we decided to give the place a go as we heard that they had great equipment and practice spaces at a great cost. Our first practice there was awkward as the entire place seemed like a completely new scene, but after giving the place a few more tries we fell in love with it.

Over time, we got to know the people very well, regularly practicing and just hanging out. From there we began to frequently play gigs which were set up by those who attended the youth centre regularly and continually wrote and practiced our new songs. We enjoyed coming to chill out every week, and our very own guitarist Josh Cabamongan even volunteered to run studios once a week. Zeal was also kind enough to let us use the place when we finally decided to track our first Demo in the late stages of 2010.

We started developing a name within the local scene, branching out and playing shows all across the country, and also being fortunate enough to win the 2010 Smoke Free Rockquest Regional Final. We also managed to secure opening slots supporting many international bands from all over the world. We were also able to tour and make many new friends with the help of Zeal backing us up.

2012 has brought many new surprises and opportunities, winning a major nationwide competition run by Redbull and Music Planet.

We definitely have many more good things coming, including our long awaited debut EP. We truly are very grateful and privileged to have Zeal. Though it may sound cliche, we really would not have accomplished what we have done without Zeal and all the friends we have made through the youth centre. We are thankful that they have supported us every step of the way and will always know Zeal as the band’s home.

HAMILTON REPORT Zeal Hamilton spent much of the previous year completing a feasibility study for its youth facility project by partnering with The Word Studio.

In addition to the 200 surveys we conducted in 2009, the study surveyed a number of not for profit organisations in the city as well as hosting consultations and surveys with over 100 young people. In the first 6 months of 2012 Zeal Hamilton raised $385,000 towards the commercial fit-out of its youth facility. While fundraising is still underway to cover the full cost estimated at $1million, the support so far has been significant. The main contributors to the building project so far have been the Hamilton Rotary clubs, DV Bryant Trust, Bettle and Associates, Grass Roots Trust and the Lion Foundation.

In response to the hundreds of surveys detailing the needs of Hamilton’s young people around the creative arts and free time opportunities, Zeal Hamilton has been busy designing the inner workings of the youth facility with the expert help of BBC Architects. The design so far includes a 350 standing capacity performance space, band rehearsal rooms and recording studio complete with high spec back-line music gear, fine art workspace, digital media suite, dance rehearsal space and an after school hang out space with cafe / kitchen. This will allow us to host a range of events and workshops in industry standard facilities and provide a place that young people can own.

In April the Zeal Hamilton Mobile Unit was completed marking the beginning of its workshops and fortnightly events around the city showcasing young local talent. The Mobile Unit, consisting of a sign written van, PA system, back-line music gear, lighting rig, and coffee trailer has enabled

over 130 young musicians, dancers, artists, and skaters express themselves in front of over 1500 of their peers in just its first five months of operation.

It has been astounding to see the number of young creatives come out of the woodwork when given the opportunity to express themselves.

When planning our first acoustic night we were after six artists and were contacted by twenty, all of whom had either never performed or at the most had only performed twice. In response, we booked nine of the twenty to perform and immediately booked the remainder for the next acoustic event. More than 130 young people attended our first acoustic night and a fortnight later we had filled half of the artist slots for our third. There are so many talented young people in this niche alone that Zeal Hamilton could purely run acoustic nights and be very busy. From the outset however, Zeal Hamilton’s goal has been to empower Hamilton’s diverse youth population in its entirety. Since our first event in April, a skate competition come indie/punk show, we have held events including hip hop dance competitions, rock shows, craft markets and reggae shows, with each genre or scene craving opportunities to exhibit or perform much like the acoustic scene.

These events have also seen a substantial number of young photographers, videographers and journalists attending and expressing their excitement around there being more events to capture. Zeal Hamilton, like the other two centres is running youth development pathways in event management, live sound and lighting, and barista to empower our young people and to fully involve them in our events. As of September we will be working with E Zone, a subsidiary of WINZ, in training classes of six young people on six week cycles to help them gain employment in the hospitality industry.

Other partnerships include local high schools where we are running our live sound and lighting workshops, and local media production company Locus Creative mentoring our young videographers in developing a Zeal Hamilton Youtube channel.

This Youtube channel will release regular videos that the team will produce, showcasing young Hamilton creatives including short documentaries on artists and music videos.

There is a huge buzz on the ground here in Hamilton, with what feels like the entire city getting behind the Zeal Hamilton project. We are excited to be a part of guiding Hamilton’s young people to becoming vibrant, generous and conďŹ dent contributors to their community.

MATT MENDY’S STORY We first met Matt on the night of Zeal West’s opening, in 2008 and since then have seen Matt grow from a shy boy who found it hard to engage with others to a confident young man who has the skills needed and a real passion for Sound Engineering.

Matt came to New Zealand, from England when he was 12 years old. His dad was offered a job and the whole family moved here for a fresh start. “It was good in the beginning” he says, intermediate school was an easy couple of years but when he got to high school he experienced a lot of bullying and found social activities harder to do. “There were some days when it was too much, and didn’t want to go... just from the bullying,” Matt explains. Regardless of the torment, Matt stayed motivated at school and did well.

“I never really had anybody that was there when I needed them except my parents and my brother,” Naturally this affected Matt and he began to find social situations difficult. He would drift between home and school with little in between.

Matt found refuge in the local music scene, “I was drawn to seeing the people that make the music I love.” He started attending shows by himself and meeting people with similar music tastes. It was around this time Matt happened across Zeal West and saw a poster for the opening gig; his favorite band was playing so he decided to go along.

Not knowing anybody Matt walked in and met Zeal’s studio manager, Chris, who was, at the time in charge of sound and audio. Chris told him about volunteering at Zeal and he jumped at the chance, landing him his first volunteer job as a Stage Assistant at a gig for local band ‘False Start’.

“From there I started to learn lighting and sound...” Zeal slowly became his second home.

“It was real good, I loved the people and it was a place where I could come and feel safe and be myself...” “...apart from home I never had another place where I could shut out the world.”

Matt has been journeying with Zeal West for four years now, and has become an integral part of our team. He is always here willing to lend a helping hand whether it be sound for a gig, or teaching another young person the skills that he has acquired over the years. Matt has also recently started to work as a paid freelance engineer for music gigs not only in Auckland, but also in Hamilton and Wellington.

ZEAL VOICE REPORT As a newly developed national department of Zeal, Zeal Voice is committed to advocating at a cultural level on behalf of the young people that engage with Zeal through its events and programmes. For many of the young people that make their way through Zeal’s doors, there are cultural barriers and social harms that inhibit their ability to connect, create and contribute.

Zeal Voice works to challenge and eliminate these barriers and harms through large-scale projects and campaigns.

Over the last year Zeal Voice has worked exclusively on an issue that in recent time has become somewhat of a hot topic – youth binge drinking. The last twelve months have seen news stories oscillate daily between instances of alcohol-related harm in young people to debate over the government’s Alcohol Reform Bill. In the midst of the grief of yet another sad story and arguments surrounding effective legislation, Zeal Voice has been developing an innovative campaign aiming to invoke trend change around binge drinking in Aotearoa’s young people.

The Zeal Voice campaign on youth binge drinking utilises one of the very mediums which has normalised binge drinking to challenge it: music. Pop music provides the daily soundtrack to a young person’s life, and increasingly so its lyrics promote messages of partying and excessive drinking.

Zeal Voice is working within the New Zealand music industry to produce songs and music videos that credibly approach the issue of youth binge drinking with fresh eyes and challenge young people to make personal changes.

The first release of Zeal Voice took place in April 2012. The song was a collaboration featuring the likes of Francis Kora (Kora), Marcus Powell (Blindspott, Blacklistt), Young Sid and Adeaze under the name All My Brothers. The song, titled “Find A Way”, called New Zealand’s young people to “find a way to make a change” to our country’s binge drinking culture. The music video was storyboarded by young people and plays out a number of common experiences and concerns of youth around alcohol. For many of the young people involved, the production of “Find A Way” challenged their own drinking habits. These young people have now become advocates for a healthier culture around alcohol in their communities.

The release of “Find A Way” was a great success.

Through a partnership with major music label Warner Music, the track was promoted throughout the country on radio, TV and other media. The release garnered Zeal the greatest national exposure it has had in its fifteen year history, including a One News piece on the song reaching 900,000 viewers. Stories rolled in from around the country speaking of the song’s relevance, timeliness and effect.

One young person, whose community has suffered greatly as a result of binge drinking and drink driving, wrote in and labelled the band as “New Zealand’s heroes”.

Alongside the production and release of songs and music videos, Zeal Voice has also been partnering with film production company Voice Films on a short film piece titled Don’t Drown Your Dream.

The film explores the issue of binge drinking from a youth perspective and features interviews with a number of musicians and young people involved in the production of “Find A Way”.

The film piece will be completed and distributed throughout New Zealand high schools as an educational resource in 2013. Over the next year Zeal Voice will continue to produce and release songs around the issue of

youth binge drinking with major New Zealand artists, as well as exploring opportunities to expand into other areas of advocacy. Committed to creating a positive cultural environment for young people, Zeal Voice is building its place as a credible voice on youth issues in Aotearoa.

YOUNG SID’S STORY “I’ve been through it man,” rapper Young Sid blasts down the mic over thumping drums and blaring guitars at Auckland’s York Street Studios. His right hand keeps his lyrics pad steady at eye level, while his left presses the headphones to his ear. “Seen too many youth waste their lives away,” he continues, “making choices they wouldn’t usually make when in the right state of mind.” Sid pumps out the last few words of his verse and Francis Kora (Kora) belts out a spinetingling high-note before the track falls back into the chorus, calling New Zealanders to “find a way to make a change.”

“Everybody was buzzing,” said renowned session bass player Dan Antunovich after the performance. For guitarist Moses Robbins (Atlas, House of Mountain), Sid’s verse was the missing piece. “The whole song all of a sudden makes perfect sense.”

It may have only taken a studio session to smash out, but Young Sid’s bold verse in the All My Brothers single “Find A Way”, put together by Zeal Voice, draws on a youth full of the realities of alcohol harm. “I see this stuff every single day,” says the rapper (real name Sidney Diamond). “Young folks getting drunk and fighting... who don’t have any role models.” Sid was once one of these young people himself, looking up to alcoholics and drug dealers. “I was naughty, man. I was naughty as hell. Used to drink a lot, sneak drinks, fight a lot.

“All that shit that I wasn’t meant to do.”

For Sid, a turning point came when he realised that he wanted to write a story different to that which he saw around him.

“I reached a certain point in life when I’m like ‘Man, everyone does this, I need to do something different’. And I chose music and I just kept with it.” With two Maori Awards for album of the year under his belt, and the longest consecutive run at #1 on the New Zealand RIANZ singles chart with “Brother” (as a part of Smashproof), Sid’s assertion to ‘keep with it’ has certainly paid off.

When approached last year to be involved in Zeal Voice’s campaign around youth binge drinking, Sid saw an opportunity to raise awareness on an important issue. “I really thought the concept of talking about youth drinking was good,” he shared in a recent interview with Girlfriend Magazine.

Through his involvement with Zeal, Sid has come to recognise the importance of youth facilities in urban centres. “I wish we had them when I was younger.” Over the years he has performed at Zeal a number of times – both in West Auckland and Wellington – and admits that there’s a different dynamic to an under-age crowd. “If you’re wack then they’re gonna be like ‘I hate this guy for ever,’ he jokes. In playing Zeal shows, he hopes to inspire young people to dream big.

“They could come away wanting to do the same thing. [It] gives them encouragement.”

Sid’s own message for young people is simple: “There’s two things I say to my people, just get educated and stay fit and healthy. That’s it. And everything falls into place from there.”

Young Sid’s story reveals the unique place Zeal has to speak at the top and the bottom, to enact change not just through a conversation with a young person, but also through the culture that governs much of that young person’s world.

Through influencing the influencers, Zeal aims to create an environment where the security and support a young person experiences at our youth facilities also stretches out into what they listen to, watch and talk about.

HIGH SCHOOL TOURS Finding the most effective way of communicating Zeal’s service to young people has been a challenge. Based on the most recent Census, Zeal identified as many as 220,000 high- school-age young people based near our three branches. We are passionate that every young person is made aware of what is on offer to them at their local Zeal Centre and has the opportunity to get involved.

Sadly, in the non-profit sector good promotion is often an after-thought to frontline service. Over the past year Zeal has worked proactively to establish the most cost-effective methods of making sure young people know who we are. Each year we are approached by countless networks for expensive advertising campaigns through local papers or radio, but our young people tell us these are not the places they go to find out what’s happening in their city.

Zeal also has connection to over 7,000 young people through social networking such as Facebook (over 200,000 in our wider reach), however this marketing tool has become saturated with events and opportunities aimed at high-schoolage young people and making our voice heard in the virtual ‘din’ is now very challenging.

What continues to be effective in drawing young people into Zeal’s service 33

is a face-to-face presence at local schools through High School Tours. Zeal sees a tangible influx of young people into all areas of our programme following these concerted promotional efforts.

For the past five years our team has been building the infrastructure to support the touring of major artists from New Zealand and abroad. Already we have worked with the likes of Kimbra, Zowie, Annah Mac, Smashproof, Ruby Frost and up-and-coming Sydney band Tonight Alive!

In 2012 this part of our organisation grew significantly as we forged a relationship with international management firm Artist Voice. Artist Voice has been responsible for some of the highest-profile events for young people in New Zealand including the last two national tours of Paramore. Feedback from their artists thus far has been that Zeal provides a touring experience equal to, and sometimes greater than, international festivals.

The high calibre of these tours is not thanks to a large budget. As a non-profit Zeal is forced to plan and promote these events at a fraction of their commercial cost.

The key strength of this experience is a dedicated team of high-school-age sound and lighting professionals who have been trained through their time at Zeal. In cooperation with their schools,

young people have been given time off as work-experience to put on shows at an industry standard in local high-schools.

On arrival, many artists are stunned to find that the events they are performing at are largely youth-managed.

In July of this year Zeal assembled our first national tour with up-and-comer Ruby Frost. The tour took in three cities, eleven shows and was seen by over 5,000 young people in Wellington, Hamilton and Auckland. Zeal tours have become a great youth development opportunity for our young people, a highly effective promotional tool and a viable career move for high-profile artists seeking to grow their reach in Aotearoa.

Looking forward, we see this as a key area of growth that needs to be nurtured and developed well. As a creative arts trust, Zeal can be more effective when we are closer to the ears and eyes of music industry professionals. Our hope is to become not just a participant in the industry, but a tastemaker who can influence key voices on youth culture, creating a voice in the industry which is not accountable to sales figures, but to the well-being and care of New Zealand’s young people.

Statement of compliance and basis of preparation The summary financial statements have been prepared in accordance with Financial Reporting Standard 39: Summary Financial Statements. These summary financial statements comply with Generally Accepted Accounting Practice in New Zealand (NZ GAAP) as it relates to summary statements.

The financial statements are presented in New Zealand dollars and all values are rounded to the nearest dollar.

The financial statements are prepared on the historical cost basis.

The Trust qualifies for differential reporting, as it is not publicly accountable and large. The Trust has taken advantage of all differential reporting exemptions 2. Our responsibility is to express an opinion on the summary financial statements based on our procedures, which were conducted in accordance with International Standard on Auditing (New Zealand) (ISA (NZ)) 810, “Engagements to Report on Summary Financial Statements.”

We expressed a qualified audit opinion on those financial statements in our report dated 30 September 2012.

The summary financial statements do not contain all the disclosures required for full financial statements under generally accepted accounting practice in New Zealand. Reading the summary financial statements, therefore, is not a substitute for reading the audited financial statements of Zeal Education Trust.

Our opinion on the audited financial statements was a qualified opinion based on the fact that in common with similar organisations, control over cash income (such as ticket sales, cafe sales, donations, hire of venue and equipment, and coffee cart sales) prior to being recorded is limited and there are no practical audit procedures to determine the effect of this limited control. In this respect alone, we have not obtained all the information and explanations that we have required.

Our qualified audit opinion states that, except for the effects of the matter described above, those financial statements comply with generally accepted accounting practice in New Zealand and present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of Zeal Education Trust as at 30 June 2012 and its financial performance for the year then ended in accordance with generally accepted accounting practice in New Zealand.

Other Matter The financial statements of Zeal Education Trust for the year ended 30 June 2011 were audited by another auditor who expressed a modified opinion on those statements, dated 18 November 2011, on the basis that control over certain revenues of the branch prior to being recorded was limited and there were no practical audit procedures to determine the effect of this limited control.
