NATIONAL REPORT In a year of financial unrest from the recent economic recession Zeal Education Trust has surprisingly found itself in a growth pattern it did not expect. For many organisations in the community sector life has been hard during the last twelve months and Zeal is no exception. However, due to the incredible support of two City Councils and the ongoing investment of key funders who continue to believe in Zeal’s vision, the organisation is stable and growing steadily in almost every area.

Some highlights from the last year include the fit-out of a brand new youth facility for Zeal’s Wellington branch. This building project saw Zeal raise over $315,000 and expand its resources and facilities, the result of which was the launch of several new youth development pathways including photography and an event management course for teenagers.

The Waitakere branch also launched a project in partnership with Love Music and the School of Rock called Artist Collective. This is a monthly event that brings together top music industry professionals into a forum context to share insight and knowledge with 4

teenagers on topics such as band promotion, recording and protecting your music. The Artist Collective events are uploaded online and are planned to be launched nationwide in the coming year.

Thanks to the support of the Wilburforce21 Trust, Zeal also established its national office recently. This has given the organisation the resources and personnel to grow its capacity to the next level in the immediate future. There is now a strong likelihood of establishing a new youth facility in another city in the next 24 months. With such aspirations on the horizon, Zeal has a strategic aim to expand its services into every major city in the country over the next ten years. This will result in countless opportunities for our nation’s young people in the creative arts, leadership and education.

But in the midst of all of this growth, the true mark of success for Zeal as an organisation is the transformation of a young person’s world. It is the ultimate purpose of every initiative and funding application.

ONE YOUNG PERSON’S STORY This is a story about a 17-year-old girl who, last year, was getting quite down and depressed. She couldn’t find anything to be excited about. She had no passion, no muse and was starting to lose her faith in herself and the people around her. She felt as if she had no purpose and that father that died for her was being let down as she wasn’t happy or fulfilling her potential. Three years ago she had found faith and a home and family at a place called Zeal. However, even that couldn’t get her out of her funk.

She joined a leadership course that Zeal offered to take her mind off things. Little did she know that this course would reignite the flame in her that was smoldering out. The first event her intern group would run was an acoustic show. After all the hard work of the night, she stood at the back of the room and watched the artist play and the people that came. She said to herself, “I did this. I

made this happen.” The sense of ownership and pure happiness are her reward for the work put in. In that moment she found her purpose, a reason to keep going, the feeling of happiness that she had longed for for so long.

She looked around the room at the people that had helped make this happen: her intern leaders and fellow interns, the people who had helped her find a reason to keep on keeping on. Throughout the year, when times got rough and she felt like giving in, she was reminded every week, Tuesdays at 4.30, that she had people who believed in her, that she was capable of so much, and that there was at least one thing that she was passionate about and would put her heart and soul into.

That girl was me. This is my thank you.

WAITAKERE REPORT This financial year saw Zeal Waitakere celebrate its first full year of operating.

Nothing has slowed down since opening, which is a mark of success, and we have been able to continue working on our strengths as we move into our second year.

Thanks to generous funding from Sky City Trust & Perry Foundation, we were able to nearly complete the entire fitout of the venue, with funding for lighting and video camera equipment.

Areas of continued and stable growth are our rehearsal rooms, which are regularly full, and the many young bands who form, practice and play shows at Zeal. We ran more than 80 events during the year; everything from metal hardcore, to hip hop and acoustic shows. It has been important that all subcultures and genres of music are played at Zeal, so that it remains inclusive to all people and that, as a community, everyone can contribute.

Although we run many events, workshops and training, the biggest strength has come through getting alongside the many young people who come to Zeal, and working with 6

them to pursue their passions and dreams.

As one example, our garage was changed to a skateboard production line as one of our young unemployed volunteers began to design a new type of longboard. He has begun to sell them, creating his own income and small business.

Our after-school café hours have seen a big increase in opportunities for youth development, especially working with homeless or very high risk young people.

We ensure we have wrap-around services available to help where needed. We have also made a commitment to increase professional development with our staff, with funding committed for further education.

WELLINGTON REPORT The 2009/10 financial year has been one full of both incredible challenges and growth for Zeal Wellington. As the year commenced we faced the difficult task of securing $315,000 during a recession for our move from 18 Garrett Street to our new location at 103 Ghuznee Street. Amidst the difficulties of relocation, Zeal’s small staff were also working tirelessly to deliver on promises to our funders and supporters. This was a perilous transition, but one that has brought the organisation to a place of unprecedented financial stability as we head towards a new funding year.

Working with over 20,000 young people in the past year, Zeal has continued to deliver in the areas of weekend events, lunchtime concerts, school dances and leadership training. With the design and construction of a new space has also come a fresh approach to how Zeal works with young people. An increased focus on development initiatives has seen many of those who once frequented Zeal as spectators now becoming an integral part of the fabric of the organisation through mastery in coffee-making, photography, sound and lighting and event management.

A Zeal concert is no longer just to highlight 10

young performers, but to grow a culture around the event where every young person has the opportunity to hold a significant role on the night.

A huge development tool for Zeal’s staff over the last year has been the introduction of the TOHU course, a youth worker training programme put together by Praxis and the Social Services ITO. Zeal increasingly aims to develop our staff as experts in the field of youth work. The course has also been a key catalyst in forming greater connections with other youth providers, thus highlighting where Zeal’s service can improve and offer more to young people.

It is out of this new understanding that Zeal’s reopening in April also saw the introduction of several new pathways for young people. With support in the form of a discretionary fund from the Ministry of Youth Development, Zeal has crafted three afternoon programmes which aim to get young people off-the-couch and into constructive environments where they grow in mastery and self-esteem. The key role Zeal now aims to occupy in Wellington’s youth network is epitomised by the phrase ‘An Urban Whare’.

Zeal aims to welcome young people into a positive environment, to develop them through equipping pathways and to grow them in self-esteem and encourage them to give back to their local community.

Creativity New Zealand is a creative country. Zeal aims to foster unique and creative expression among young people through dance, music and visual art. Education Education is not mere knowledge, but also the power to make good decisions. Zeal uses educational programmes to encourage young people to overcome obstacles and challenges that they face on a daily basis.

This Maori health development model stems from the idea that a person is like a Whare Nui, or meeting house. For the house to stand, all four walls must be strong and resilient. If one wall is weak it will put strain on the others. The four walls are Taha Whanau (social well-being/family), Taha Wairua (spiritual well-being), Taha Tinana (physical well-being) and Taha Hinengaro (mental and emotional well-being).

In the application of this model, Zeal’s team of youth workers encourage and provide opportunities for mental, physical, social and spiritual well-being in the order perceived most urgent to each young person.

This Native-American model looks at the journey each young person needs to embark on to operate well in their local community.

Brendtro argues that young people must first feel a sense of belonging in any environment – they must feel safe and have threats or fears alleviated. The next step is to grow in self-esteem by achieving mastery or proficiency in a new skill or ability. This is expressed by the many ways Zeal trains and equips young people. From mastery they will grow into independence and resilience, and from this point they develop empathy and generosity to function healthily in their social setting.

GOOD STORIES WAITAKERE

JURASSIC PENGUIN It’s a peculiar name, but for four young local boys Jurassic Penguin has been a constant source of focus, passion and motivation. It all started when Zeal’s Studio Director, Chris Horry, saw four intoxicated youths outside and, knowing they played music, asked them to come back and jam with him.

They were keen as and came back a couple of days later. Chris jammed with them and saw great potential, so the band was formed.

Jurassic Penguin have now been together over a year, practicing weekly, playing shows around Auckland and have completed a two week North Island Tour. Recently they completed a 15-track full length album, filmed their first music video (which has involved many other young people in the production) and created and developed their own merchandise.

Music has been a positive outlet for these young people, providing an opportunity to express themselves creatively through melody, rhythm and lyrics and having a constant positive community of people around them.

Chris says about the band, “Music has given them purpose and meaning and an outlet for the things in this world that they can’t understand or decide isn’t right. I have been told on many occasions that they never feel more alive than when they are playing music.”

“I played around with music a bit before Zeal, but with all the resources I could try new things and explore music. It gave me so much more opportunity.”

“Zeal & Jurassic Penguin has meant everything to me. It’s been the crossroads in my life. The staff have been really encouraging and they challenge me to think. I left school in year 12 and had no focus; now I am applying for a Bachelor in Social Practice. I’m finding my place in the world and what I want to do.”

JAMEE’S STORY I was born on 23 September, the seventh child to my birth mother. She was very reckless during her pregnancy, drinking heavily and using all sorts of drugs. After my birth, my mother tried to leave me at the hospital. However, when a lesbian couple who were friends of hers learnt of my situation they took me home, raising me as their own.

Despite my loving mothers, life was very hard. Both my birth family and adopted family were heavily involved in gangs.

Alcohol and drugs were as much a part of the family as the members themselves.

Money was always tight and there was a lot of violence in our home. Because of my home life, I found it difficult to fit in at school, always fearing that others would find out I was raised by lesbians and not understand that it was still a true loving family. I felt truly isolated.

As a young teenager I meet my birth siblings and began to spend time with them. They were completely immersed in the violent lifestyle of heavy street gangs. During this time I was sexually abused by a friend which, along with the negative influence of my siblings and friends, caused me to spiral 18

downhill rapidly. I began stealing, jumping people, getting into fights, doing alcohol and drugs, and then dealing drugs. By the age of 14 I was using prostitution as a way to get money.

With all this stress an explosion was inevitable. I refused help from my mums and ended up living in the house of my birth family. Then everything went from bad to worse when I was caught in an extremely abusive relationship.

Around this time my cousin took me to this place called Zeal. I walked in and was in complete awe. This place was for us? I couldn’t believe we were even allowed in the building let alone actually hang out there! My friends and I were trespassed from the mall and shunned out of cafes and public places, yet the Zeal staff welcomed us.

One day the relationship I was in took a dramatic turn and I had to run for my life.

I got into a stranger’s car and told him to take me to Zeal. Through the friendships I had formed with the Zeal staff I mustered up the strength to go to the Police and press charges. I had found a place where I could share my story and start to find some relief from all the demons in my past.

Just as it started to look like life was improving the unthinkable happened.

One of my mums got heavily involved in methamphetamine. My world was ripped apart as I lost the only consistent thing in my life: my family. That familiar feeling of being unwanted and second to drugs would have totally overwhelmed me if it weren’t for the support I found at Zeal.

The staff at Zeal helped me to get into counseling and have always got time to talk whenever I need to. I love helping in the café and it’s something I have discovered is one of my strengths. I have been taught how to make professional coffee, learnt about food hygiene and customer service and how to maintain an A grade kitchen. I’m now looking for jobs in cafes and am doing catering with Zeal to support myself and help my mum.

Over the last year and a half I have relied on Zeal not only for quality relationships but also as a community where I am accepted, valued and loved purely for who I am. I’ve learnt that I, as a person, have great worth and deserve more than selling myself to get by. I’ve learnt that everyone deserves a real chance in life and to have respect for everyone no matter what they look like or how they act because they could have a story far worse than mine.

JESSICA’S STORY Jessica is a young Maori girl who arrived at Zeal Wellington in the middle of 2008.

She comes from a difficult background. Her mother is an alcoholic and her sister became a solo mum at age 15. They live in State housing in one of Wellington’s northern suburbs. In her first year at Zeal she would often arrive at Zeal looking tired and upset, unwilling to participate in anything put in front of her. Her disconnection from her family also saw Jessica go through a series of short-lived but intense relationships with guys three or four years older than her. She would often come out of these extremely hurt, but unwilling to say anything to our youth workers.

a real interest in coffee. After a few weeks in the course she started to realise she was actually quite good at it. Week by week we watched as Jessica came into Zeal each afternoon more positive, often staying around hours longer than usual just to clean the espresso machine and make coffees for the after school crowd.

In 2010 Jessica began our barista training programme. Working alongside Erin Henderson, the head barista of Coffee Supreme in Wellington, she began to take

In term four of this year Jessica began to take one of the after-school coffee courses herself, training six peers to make the best lattes in town. She also worked tirelessly to perfect her craft for the first Youth Barista Championship which ran at Zeal on 6 November 2010.

While at Zeal, we have seen Jessica buck the trend of her background and circumstances to emerge as an example for her whanau and those around her. We are so proud of how far she has come, and we believe that out of her new self-esteem will grow the strength to put together the other pieces of her life. We see that the barista programme has really just been the start of a new belief in all she can become. (name changed to protect privacy)

RAY’S STORY Late in 2009 a graffiti artist going by the alias “Chalk” became the bane of Zeal’s existence. Every week new tags would turn up on our building, defacing the exterior and forcing our youth workers to grab a brush and a roller each Monday morning to repair the damage. We were determined to find out who this “Chalk” was and see to it that he learned his lesson.

Some months later a 17-year-old Pakeha young person named Ray turned up at one of Zeal’s Friday night community dinners. Ray had come from some pretty tough childhood circumstances and was now living with and looking after his father (who needed a hip replacement) in a community flat just out of town.

As Ray started to hang out with the Zeal crew he showed incredible artistic flare. Ray would often use discarded materials and paints to create projects for other young 24

people in the afternoons, gaining enjoyment from expressing his creative ability while also giving back to those around him. Ray went on to put over 100 hours of volunteer labour into the painting and renovation of our new youth facility on Ghuznee Street.

As we headed towards the opening of our new space in April 2010 we noticed something strange: Ray was wearing a curious baseball cap with the name “Chalk” on it. We soon found out that this now polite and generous young person was the one who had been defacing our venue for a year beforehand. With only two weeks to go before the opening of our new facility the outcome seemed obvious: we commissioned Ray to graffiti two massive 2.4m x 1.2m panels illustrating the Maori health model of Te Whare Tapa Wha. From rough smears on our exterior walls to complete pieces bringing colour and life to our interior halls, this is one story of a young person and Zeal.

JOEY’S STORY At the age of 13 Joey’s best idea for a Friday night was to get someone older to buy him and his friends a cask of wine and sit in the carpark adjacent to Zeal getting drunk. His earliest memories of our youth workers was being asked nicely to tip out his alcohol and come inside. Joey remembers it was about two years before he ever actually stepped inside the venue; he could hear enough across the park.

As the months went on Joey began to bring friends from Wellington High School along each Wednesday as well, until the small cafe across the park started to look more and more like a youth centre. Within six months Zeal’s team made the decision to open each day after school for the first time in the organisation’s 11 year history.

As Joey started to come to Zeal our youth workers pounced on their opportunity. We gave Joey every possible opportunity to help alongside our team of 20-year-old volunteers.

We handed him a brush, a mop, a cash box or whatever necessary to make him know he was part of the team. Within weeks he was turning up early each Friday before Zeal to see how he could help.

Joey became an agent of change, leaving his past of alcohol abuse and truancy behind to lead his peers into a safe and caring environment where they have grown too.

As a 13-year-old he chose not merely to be a participant, but an active and influential young person who radically changed the culture of Zeal for the better. After being near expulsion for wagging, Joey received the attendance award at the Wellington High School prize-giving in 2010.

The Board of Management present their management report including financial statements of Zeal Education Trust, (“the Trust”) for the twelve months ended 30 June 2010.

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS Note 1: Statement of Accounting Policies Reporting Entity These financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the requirements of the Financial Reporting Act 1993. Zeal Education Trust is a Trust registered under the Charitable Trusts Act 1957 and was incorporated on 14 June 1993.

The 2009 and the 2010 comparatives are for a 12 month period.

General Accounting Policies The general accounting policies recognised 28

as appropriate for the measurement and reporting of financial performance and the financial position under the historical cost method are followed in the preparation of these financial statements.

Specific Accounting Policies The following specific accounting policies, which significantly affect the measurement of financial performance and financial position, have been applied: (i) Operating Revenue Revenue shown in the statement of financial performance comprises amounts received and receivable by the Trust from grants,

donations and goods and services supplied to consumers in the ordinary course of operations. Unspent grants are carried forward into future periods. (ii) Property, Plant and Equipment All fixed assets are recorded at cost. (iii) Depreciation The rates of depreciation vary according to the nature and economic lives of the assets and fall within the following ranges (on a straight line basis): Buildings Fixtures and Fittings Studio Equipment Plant and Equipment

Depreciation commences when the asset is physically completed and use commenced.

(vi) Income Tax The Trust has charitable status and is exempt from income tax (vii) Differential Reporting The Trust qualifies for differential reporting, as it is not publicly accountable and large.

The Trust has taken advantage of all differential reporting exemptions.

Comparative Figures These accounts reflect twelve months activity and twelve months comparative numbers are shown.

Changes in Accounting Policies There has been no material change in accounting policies. All policies have been applied on a basis consistent with previous year.

(iv) Accounts Receivable Receivables are stated at estimated realisable value after providing for debts where collection is considered doubtful. (v) Goods and Services Tax (GST) The statement of financial performance has been prepared so that all components are stated exclusive of GST. All items in the statement of financial position are stated net of GST with the exception of receivables and payables that include GST invoiced.

The financial report provides information about the past financial performance of the Trust and its financial position as at 30 June 2010. The Trustee’s Responsibilities

The Trustees are responsible for the 34

preparation of a financial report which gives a true and fair view of the financial position of the Trust as at 30 June 2010 and the results of operations for the year ended on that date.

Auditors’ Responsibilities

It is our responsibility to express an independent opinion on the financial report presented by the Trustees.

Basis of Opinion

An audit includes examining, on a test basis, evidence relevant to the amounts and disclosures in the financial report. It also includes assessing: - the significant estimates and judgements made by the Trustees in the preparation of the financial report, and - whether the accounting policies are appropriate to the Trust’s circumstances, consistently applied and adequately disclosed.

We conducted our audit in accordance

with New Zealand Auditing Standards. We planned and performed our audit so as to obtain all the information and explanations which we considered necessary in order to provide us with sufficient evidence to obtain reasonable assurance that the financial report is free from material misstatements, whether caused by fraud or error. In forming our opinion we also evaluated the overall adequacy of the presentation of information in the financial report.

Other than in our capacity as auditors we have no relationship with, or interests in, the Trust.

In our opinion, except for adjustments that might have been found to be necessary had we been able to obtain sufficient evidence concerning revenues, the financial report on pages 2 to 8 fairly reflects the results of operations for the year ended on that date.

In our opinion the financial report on pages 2 to 8 fairly reflects the financial position of the Trust as at 30 June 2010.

Our audit was completed on 14 November 2010 and our qualified opinion is expressed as at that date.

Qualified Opinion

As with similar organisations, control over certain revenues of the Trust prior to being recorded is limited, and there are no practical audit procedures to determine the effect of this limited control.

In this respect alone we have not obtained all the information and explanations that we have required.

ACCOUNTANT’S REPORT The audited accounts for the year ended 30 June 2010 show a consolidated net surplus of $376,842 (Wellington a net surplus of $395,301 and Waitakere a deficit of $18,458) after allowing for depreciation $101,075.

The surplus is attributed to donations and funding received for the fit out of the new premises in Wellington.

The fit out costs of $397,266 have been capitalised and show in the Balance Sheet under fixed assets.

LOOKING AHEAD Zeal uses the creative arts as its main medium for youth development in both of its youth centres. The arts have a timeless gift that ensures their relevance to every generation. Regardless of the decade you grow up in you remember the music that moved you, the art that spoke to you, the dance genre that grooved you and the bands that put into words what you were thinking.

For Zeal, harnessing the arts as a youth development pathway is where our expertise is growing. This means more grass-root opportunities for teenage musicians, dancers, photographers and artists to hone their skill when opportunities are slim elsewhere.

Key areas of focus in the future will be the development of short term reproducible workshops that teach young people everything from event management and event photography, through to recording an EP and producing a music video. These workshops are not merely designed to give young people a skill. They are also written to help the development of the young person’s resilience and maturity as significant participants in their wider community.

Some big opportunities Zeal is currently considering are:

1. A third Zeal youth facility and team of youth workers based in Hamilton.

2. A youth-run radio station at Zeal Waitakere.

3. An annual youth barista championship held at Zeal Wellington (the first such competition was run in November 2010).
