Following the success of the first Science Fair in 2006, ZIS hosted its second annual Science Fair between May 17 and 19, 2007 at Zaman International School Campus in Phnom Penh.

This year, a number of Cambodian high schools and primary schools were invited to visit and view the displays demonstrated by the students at Zaman. It was well attended with over 4500 students and teachers from ten high schools and primary

In addition, a distinguished guest, whose son is also studying at our school, honored the science fair; H.E. Mr. Ung Phyrun, Secretary of State, Ministry of Health inspected the exhibitions. He was pleased and genuinely surprised at the efforts of the students and quality of the

research that had gone into many of the exhibits. The families of Zaman students' also attended.

Students from visiting schools were given small gifts in the form of school bags, 2 or 3 brochures, an info book about Zaman, a pen, a cap and a ZIS album.

This year saw many more projects than the former Science Fair, with 101 separate projects done by over 200 students.

Preparation took many months as students participating in the physics, chemistry and biology clubs worked tirelessly to meet their deadlines.

Setting up the displays was given over to the public holiday which conveniently occurred on the day before the fair began.

The purpose of the Science Fair was to encourage students' curiosity of science and foster an interest in research as well as giving them the opportunity to show their abilities in science. They were also given the opportunity to socialize with other students, as were the teachers and the students' families who met in an informal and friendly atmosphere.

School officials and teachers met with the Principle of Z a m a n International School, Mr Osman, and it provided an ideal and i n f o r m a l opportunity to discuss how the schools might work together in the future. In fact, it was suggested that the 2008 Science Fair would be a multi-school effort with students from different institutions working together and interacting to produce exhibits to rival those of this year's fair. The idea was roundly accepted and in the following years it will be put into practice.

LET'S LEARN ABOUT THE CLUBS To let the students at Zaman International School know more about the extra curricular activities, we made an interview with our Vice Principal Mr. Murat Tutumlu, who is also in charge of extra curricular activities.

Q: Why does the school offer extra curricular activities?

A: In Zaman, as average, there are about 15 different kinds of subjects. We think that the students are having study hours too much and they need time to relax and have fun and the after school activities are playing great role at the school. School is the education place so in education there must be some fun, too. Because of that we try to open clubs which will be interesting and useful for the students.

Q: What are their advantages?

A: So the students are not being educated in one direction, in one way. They may choose any club according to their interests. They can improve their different skills in different ways. So there are many advantages but this is the most important one I think. And as the clubs are fun they help also learning a lot.

Q: Are there any plans to open new clubs next year? What are they? This year why doesn't the school have?

A: We have the list of the clubs and I can give it to you later. Next year, we are arranging club hours again as two sections like last year, so every student may attend to two different clubs 4 hours a week. Last year we offered more than 30 clubs and the next academic year as the primary and kindergarten section is moving to the new building we will have more classrooms in the school building So that we may offer between 30 and 40 clubs.

Q: Do you think the clubs effect our study?

A: Yes, of course. I know that the students study too much during the day. Most of the students start to study very early in the

morning around 6 o'clock. They leave school at 4 p.m. and they go on studying after school again; they take extra courses from tutors at home. This is too much for them as they can not learn in that way. Because they don't have enough time to have fun and do self-study and it is very important. If there is no selfstudy, we can say that there is no learning, too. So here it is one of the thoughts students have: “When the teacher explains a subject, the student can learn�.

But actually, it is not the case.

Even the most qualified teachers do not teach anything that way.

Self-study is very important because nobody can open your mind and put something in it , but you can learn by yourself. Just teacher shows the way how to do it. The teacher teaches you how to catch fish rather than giving a fish.

Well, the daily study time should be cut down. That is the function of the clubs in our school. We are planning to put some selfstudy hours. I didn' t even stop to think for a secon d about what I had said, because I was full of anger. I was oblivious to her feelings I wanted out of that house, and have nothing to do with her.

One day, a letter regarding a school reunion came to my house in Singapore. So I lied to my wife that, I was going on a business trip. After the reunion, I went to the old shack just out of curiosity. My neighbors said that she died. I did not shed a single tear. They handed me a letter that she had wanted me to have.

"My dearest son, I think of you all the time. I'm sorry that I came to Singapore and scared your children. I was so glad when I heard you were coming for the reunion. But I may not be able to even get out of bed to see you.

I'm sorry that I was a constant embarrassment to you when you were growing up. You see... when you were very little, you got into an accident, and lost your eye. As a mother, I couldn't stand watching you having to grow up with one eye. So I gave you mine.

I was so proud of my son who was seeing a whole new world for me, in my place, with that eye.

I was never upset at you for anything you did. The couple of times that you were angry with me, I thought to myself, 'it's because he loves me.'

Fiftieth Issue As Zaman International School Family, today we are very happy and proud of publishing the fiftieth issue of our school newspaper. Zaman International School has been publishing the school newspaper for four years.

Why does a school need to publish a newspaper? What can be the aim of publishing a school newspaper periodically? What are the advantages and contributions of such kind of an activity to the learning and teaching process and educ ation?

Zam a n I n t e r n at i o n a l S c h o o l newspaper is published to make some contributions to the social skills of the students and broaden their horizons and minds. Beside this, the students have the chance of practicing their knowledge and applying their potential skills such as writing, examining, enquiring, reasoning and organizing by contributing to the school newspaper during the preparation process. They produce many things and in the end they see what they have produced and this makes them get more self-confidence and self-esteem.

Hydrogen Energy One of the most important reasons for the last two world wars was the sharing of energy sources. 60 years on from the last world war, the world is now very close to confronting the same problem. There has been an enormous rise in energy demand since the middle of the last century. This increase has resulted from both rapid industrial development and population growth. The world population is 4.8 times greater, and the total energy requirement has increased more than 30 fold from between 1850 and 2000.

Many studies have demonstrated that while global demand increases by at least 2-3% per year, the current oil fields are depleting at an average of 3-5% per year. If this demand continues at this rate, we will reach a point of crisis in oil sometime after 2010, and the same will be true for natural gas somewhat later, between 2020 and 2030 [1, 3]. The basic energy source of the world, hydrogen, is a new hope for solving the energy problem. It is likely that this century will be the century of the fuel cell. This technology uses hydrogen as fuel, and offers the prospect of supplying the world with clean, sustainable electrical power.

Hydrogen, which is the simplest element in space, was discovered in the 16th century and its inflammable property was understood in the 18th century.

Ninety percent of the known universe consists of this simple element. Hydrogen is colorless, odorless, nonpoisonous, and 14.4 times lighter than air. In its liquid phase it has a temperature of -252.77 째C. It is the fuel of the sun and other stars, hence the main energy source of the universe. Hydrogen is not found as a free element in nature, but rather it is found as a compound, particularly as water. Hydrogen has the largest energy amount per unit mass among known fuels. The energy of 1 kg of hydrogen equals 2.1 kg of natural gas and 2.8 kg gasoline.

However, its volume per unit energy is higher. It is 1.33 times more efficient compared with fossil fuels as an energy source.

Every year, 500 billion m3 of hydrogen is produced, stored, transported, and utilized in the world. Initially, hydrogen was used for the production of ammonia, but today hydrogen utilization has expanded tremendously to incorporate applications in chemical and petroleum refining, metallurgy, the hydrogenation of edible fats and oils, space and weather programs, fuel cells, and the manufacture of high quality electronic components. The most important consumer is in the petroleum- chemistry industry.

Hydrogen can also be stored in metal hydrides. When cooling is applied, the hydrogen atoms diffuse inside the metal hydrides.

To release the hydrogen, the reverse process, heating, is needed. Due to the large storage necessary, aluminum and boron hydrides have been used extensively over the last 10 y e a r s . I n p a r t i c u l a r, b o r o n hydrides are important as they can be used in liquid conditions.

It seems that hydrogen may be the major energy source in the future. Eventually, it will be used to supply the energy needed in the economy, being used for transportation, central and distributed electric power, and combined heat and power for buildings, and industrial processes. However, hydrogen technology is currently in the preproduction stage of development. Hydrogen energy is not cheap when compared to other energy sources at this time.

There are some challenges that need to be overcome, such as producing, storing, and using hydrogen efficiently before we use hydrogen instead of fossil fuels. However, hydrogen is the key to solving the energy problems of the world. Hydrogen is available in every country, everywhere. Using hydrogen as an energy source will prevent many conflicts between countries. This energy source will help address concerns about energy security, global climate change, and air quality. It seems that the views of Jules Verne, quoted at the beginning of this article, will be realized one day in the future.
