Grade 7 Quiz Super Challenge text. This section was answered remarkably well by all groups and, in fact, none of the groups made any errors. By the end of the listening section, 7F were 90 and had two “doubles” in hand; 7E were 100 with one “double” in hand; 7A were 110 with one “double” in hand; and 7B were still in the lead with 130 but with no “doubles” left.

Friday the 9th of February, 2007 saw the second intra-grade quiz between the grade 7 classes of Zaman International School. All eyes were on grade 7B, who had won the first quiz with a clear margin and came into the competition as favorites. But on this occasion, each grade was asked to choose a team of three new contestants with no previous quiz experience so backing a winner from the start wasn't easy.

The rookies this time around were, for 7A, Mara Rosa, Keo Maradony, and Lim Meng Heng; for 7B, Lay Roth Seima, Ly Bandith, and Srey Sovisal; for 7E, Seng Sodalin,Ninth P i c h t h i d a , a n d U n g Vi s o t h Thyda; and for 7F, Sothara Mony, Marina Phal, and Devy Chansochenayeap.

The quiz began with all the grade 7 boys and girls packed into the school's cinema, noisily awaiting the start. On the stage, were the four teams representing each grade. In front of the stage, to the right, stood Mr Hakan, the moderator and quiz master.

Behind him sat the judges and scorekeepers, Mr Steven and Mr Adem. Questions were displayed via LCD projector and laptop onto the large cinema screen.

The rules were simple. There were 19 questions with each correct answer scoring 10 points.

In addition, each team had three opportunities to use a “double”. A correct answer on a “double” was worth 20 points, but an incorrect answer was penalized with a 10point deduction. The “double” had to be declared before the question was asked which meant that teams using a “double” were betting that the next question in the quiz would be easy. The four question categories included “Grammar”, “Listening”, “General Knowledge”, and “Vocabulary”. Students were allowed 30 seconds to discuss the correct answer with their teammates before committing to one, which was written on a piece of paper and displayed to the judges.

Vocabulary came next, and it was still anybody's game. With the students in the audience in full vocal swing, it took some calming down from Mr Hakan before the quiz could continue. A few tricky questions tested the contestants, and with only the general knowledge questions left, 7B were leading by 20.

Lagging were the girls, who missed the first two questions. A case of nerves perhaps? At the 7B had exhausted all their end of the first round, 7F were 40 “doubles” in the first round. It would only take a couple of errors to see the mighty 7B vanquished. It was the second last question and 7B made a rare mistake. With one question remaining, 7B's lead had been cut to just 10 with 7A and 7E making a last minute charge.

Another mistake would see a tie for first place.

Alas, 7B just held on. In the end, equal second place went to 7A and 7E with 190 points. 7F brought up the rear with a valiant 180. But champions again were 7B with 200 points. Prizes were awarded to 7B (first place) and 7A and 7E (equal second place).

In the good spirit of friendly competition, all applauded the prize winners as they stood on the stage and received their prizes.

Mousetrap Car Race Of Physics Club Mousetrap car? What is it? Some people might have wondered what exactly the Mousetrap car is. It is a physics project in which students design and construct a vehicle with single mousetrap as its sole source of propulsion. A mouse-trap car is powered by the energy of a wound up

Our physics club members had experienced in building the mousetrap car, which was the first term project of physics club, and found out that it is an interesting project of science.

However, at the beginning we all felt hopeless, yet it didn't end up in hopelessness again. Mr. Gurkan Cil, physics teacher and physics club lecturer always said to his club members, and probably to the others who are interested in doing so, that we could do it, so DON'T BE HOPELESS. It was the first time for all the physics club members to target in making such thing as mousetrap car. Our physics club lecturer had given us a lot of information and had shown many presentations of mousetrap vehicle modules. He provided guidelines such as data in PDF, pictures and videos of the project, so as to do self research.

W e knew that lightweight materials will make sense for a better motion. There is a wide range of choice for the car to be made of wood, plastic or lead, etc. So we adopted the materials according to our preference. Actually, we had concerned about where to get the materials, but than we ascertained that, we could find some wood at Bueng Trobek carpenters area, and Oar Reasey Market was where most of the needed materials could be found. For example, mousetrap, axle, ball bearing (known as Padarng in Khmer), string, screws, nails, etc. We needed

We f o r m e d t h e wheel system by axles, which could be any dowel rods, craft sticks or iron sticks that we placed in to the chassis, drilled holes on the wood, where approach to the end of the car body. Then we attached the wheels to each two end sides of the axles. After that, we located a mousetrap on the body of the car by using glue, tape or screw. Up to this step, we obtained a very simple car. In order to investigate the requirement of the car system, we tested our cars for the first time. We learned from the experiment that ball bearing is needed to apply in between the wheel and the chassis, where a lot of friction occurs. Another condition demanded we had to attach a lever arm to the mousetrap's "snapper". The purpose of the lever arm is that long lever arm decreases the

pulling force but increases the pulling distance. Thereby long lever arm minimizes the power output or transfer stored energy into energy of motion at a slow rate, which explains how mousetrap car could travel s l o w l y i n g r e a t distance.

We had to wind up the string arou nd the axle whilst we want it to get in motion. Wrapping the string around the axle can be troublesome. It requires some practice and patience. We had to wind the wheels in the direction opposite to the motion that we want the mouse trap car to travel, in this way the string winded around the axle. We have learnt some strategies in winding the string. For example, do not wind the string loosely or it will snag itself and do not push on the mousetrap's lever arm during this process, you want the string to be tight and to pull the lever arm over. Once the mouse-trap's arm is released, the tension of the mouse-trap's arm pulls the string off the drive axle causing the drive axle and the wheels to rotate, propelling the vehicle. We had several experiments to reach the end of the construction. We gave our own car some special designs; therefore it would look nice and creative.

At last, there were seven mousetrap cars designed and experimented by seven physics club members. Each of us had a various design. Mr. Gurkan Cil, who searched and prepared the mousetrap car project, eventually arranged a fabulous mousetrap race, which took place on 23rd January 2007 with all the physics club members participated. Racing field was decided to be in ZIS, Kindergarten and Primary Department, where the floor is smooth (less friction). Each candidate and their experimental mousetrap cars were numerated from one to seven.

As well as students and teachers, Mr Osman Karaca, the principle of ZIS, was present at the race as spectator. Some of our friends were cheering and supporting the candidates that made us felt as if it had been a real car race, unlike the experimental races we had done before it was quite fun after all.

The race started after each car was ready, car axle was winded up with string connected to the lever arm with the other side. The cars raced one by one, one after another starting from number one to number seven. The longest distance taken by the cars was measured to be 25 meters. The winner was Monika Lavan (11F), second Lida Eang (11F), third Ny Srey Kam (11E),

followed by Molika Pich Prak (11E), Vuthyka Men (11E), Sroy Kim Chuo (10E) and Sethikdanique Oum Hem (10E).

The car built by Molika Pich Prak (11E) was selected for the best design. All of the competitors were awarded with some gifts and was provided with a certificate of attendance for the mousetrap race. There was a surprise gift for the winner, and the gift was opened immediately after the race. The gift was two little white mice. We raced together and we enjoyed together. It was a wonderful achievement for completing our first term project “Mousetrap Car”. The physics club members would like to thank to Mr. Gurkan Cil for the amazing project he had provided and the encouragement he increased.

Yo u s h o u l d t r y t o b u i l d a mousetrap car, it is fun and amazing, or try with your friends then you can arrange a race among yourselves. If your question is “where to begin?” there is no "only one" way to build a mousetrap powered vehicle, the best approach is to apply you best understanding of the laws of physics without over exaggerat-

ing any one concept. As a d e s i g n e r, o n e should understand t h e

con cepts such as velocity, friction, energy, power, simple machines, Newton's laws, inertia and rotational dynamics, so as to help them in building the car. Try to find a harmonious balance between all elements and variable in order to achieve the best results. Do not suppose that

If the mouse trap is located too far from the drive axle, there will not be enough pulling force to propel the racer to the finish. It is important to try the mouse trap in several locations from the drive axle in order to find your car's best performance. If you want to improve your mousetrap vehicle, you should experiment and report your car upon changes.

You can try changing position, materials or technique of the system and compare the result if it is better or worse. Try to e n c o u r a g e c r e a t i v i t y. F o r example, the car does not have to have four wheels. Three and two wheel models will work very well if designed properly. Lids, compact disks, records, butter tub lids can be used as the wheels. Let's see how good you are at building a simple machine mousetrap car.

Palm Island

The Palm Islands, also referred to as The Palm Dubai and The Palms, are the world's three largest man-made islands, which are being built on the coast of the emirate of Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The project is being handled by Al Nakheel Properties (Nakheel Corporation), which will increase Dubai's shoreline by 120km (72 miles) and create a large number of residential, leisure and entertainment areas. The idea was first announced in May 2002 and the two manmade freehold artificial palm tree-shaped resort islands are expected to maintain Dubai's position as a premium tourist destination. The Palm Islands has also been named ' T h e E i g h t h Wo n d e r o f t h e World'.

The two Dubai islands, The Palm Jumeirah and The Palm Jebel Ali, will be built in the shape of date palm trees and consist of a trunk; a crown with 17 fronds (a frond is the leaf of a fern); and a surrounding crescent island - the back of which forms the breakwater. Collectively, the island will support more than 60 luxury hotels, 4,000 exclusive residen-

tial villas (sale), 1,000 unique water homes (sale), 5,000 shoreline apartments (sale), marinas, water theme parks, restaurants, shopping malls, sports facilities, health spas, cinemas and various dive sites.

Its Development The project took four years of methodical planning and exhaustive feasibility studies in Dubai, ensuring that the islands would not disrupt the environment. The first stage of the development of The Palm Islands, includes the construction of the land foundations, which involves sand transfer and rock placement. Following this, the next stage will involve the building of infrastructure and services, as well as the 300 meter (990 feet) bridges linking the islands to the mainland. The final stage consists of the construction of homes, townhouses and apartments.

The Palm, Jumeirah - Dubai The Jumeirah Palm island is primarily a retreat and residential area for living, relaxation, and leisure. It contains themed

boutique hotels, three types of villas (Signature Villas, Garden Homes, and Town Homes), and shoreline apartments.

The Palm, Jebel Ali - Dubai The Palm Jebel Ali is more of an entertainment destination for both adults and children, which caters to both residents and tourists. The island will also be 50% larger than The Palm Jumeirah, and will include six marinas, a 'Sea Village', a water theme park and water homes built on stilts between the fronds and the crescent. Construction began on this island in October 2002 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2007.

The Palm, Deira - Dubai It was announced on the 5th of October 2004 by the crown prince of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, that a third man-made Palm Island will be built on reclaimed land off the coast of Dubai's Deirah beach. The Palm Deira will be the largest of the three palm islands covering 14km (8.4 miles) in length and 8.5km (5.1 miles) in width. It will

consist of residential property, marinas, shopping malls, sports facilities, and clubs. The residential area will be located on the 41 fronds and will contain 8,000 two-storey villas/town houses in three distinct styles Premier Villas, Grand Villas and Vista Town Homes.

The youngster was shockingly astonished to hear this horrible suggestion. But, after a long hesitation, overwhelmed by his feelings, he decided to kill his mother. His mother, although being aware of all that happened, showed no resistance. The boy killed her and put her heart in a handkerchief.

The youngster, being extremely happy to live up to his word, hurried to his sweetheart. On his way he stepped on a stone while hastily running.
