No word, no allusion can shine, smell, flow by this thrill of fear, suspension of this nameless thing, which first taste at the edge of tongue is beyond our admiration’s capacity. Bruno Schulz

IDEA
The film’s main character is described as X. The viewer will never find out his full name or pseudonym. This is a man, who is condemned to anonymity; his job is to create a advertisement’s slogans. The world of unreal City, which exists beyond ages and states, is filled with a posters’ glue. Words, letters, punctuation marks – this is a material of X’s work. He is embattled by phrases and its empty senses, he in a kind of coma - numbness caused by everyday things’ repetitiveness. He sits in his room, coated by books, notes, press- cuttings and index cards. He is like a mummified growth on a desk. He has impression that whole room becomes catacomb. Outside world is pulsating, trams behind the windows are noisy as hell, but in his room, there is only a silence, void. The only contact with real world are the telephone calls from mysterious Mr Kaffeltreum, who gives directions about another orders. X has to create strong, persuasive slogans. With every new task, he is more embittered and mentally martyred. He has never wanted to be like this. Once he dreamed about writing novels, voluminous works, in which there isn’t any single needless word. Now he produces poor, unwanted and lame things. He doesn’t speak in his own voice. X is becoming more and more paraonoidal. As he creates slogans, he uses words from books of other authors, plays with contexts, starts to notice a dual dependency between words. He tests secret familiarities between words, the ideas’ clandestine meetings. He tries to compensate his artistic frustration by copywritter’s common life. Psycho is evolving very fast. Now X is far away from reality; contact with his wife is limited to stealthy glimpses; he seems to be suprised by her presence. X’s wife, who is slowly haunted by husband’s somnambulism, speaks to empty spaces, hunts for caterpillars. She is isolated from husband by a pile of X’s maniacal notes, books, press- cuttings and index cards. Meanwhile, X starts to call in question absolutely everything, even the existence of wife, Mr Kaffeltreum and himself. Will he come to a decision to cut an umbilical cord, which conects him with Kaffeltreum? Is a mysterious doppelganger a kind of remorse, materialised in craziness? Or maybe this is Kaffeltreum in person? Those questions will stay opened.
* A 15-minute film „Yootshenkah Otshevnah” is a cinematical debut of Zalibarek – drawer, video artist, editor-in-chief of Puzdro surreal magazine. In accordance with his own idea of art, close to Bruno Schulz’s „mitization of reality”, he searchs for wondrous symptoms in casual life. He doesn’t hide himself in interim meas-
ures and doesn’t follow complexity of popular discourses. As he says: You cannot surrender to a tyranny of critics, ideologists and their sacred doctrines of what artist have to do for nation, world, civilisation, democracy, history, ideology, religion and natural environment. They force art as a form of servitude. The world of inner emotions is much more interesting than the most sensational events in real life or modern doctrines. That’s why film is based on weird projections in hero’s mind. Sometimes there is no border between those projections and the X’ s real existence. X hacks through layers of subconsciuosness, cluttered by ambition, fear, diffidence and alienation. Scenography (created mainly as digital 3D redendring) takes an important role in a film. Thanks to it, viewer can experience hero’s dillemas of identity in a very intriguing way. Talking not so serious: this is an ammusment park inside hero’s head. It is a symbolic space, long time ago erased from Polish cinema, which rather doesn’t care of imaginative styles. French writer and thinker Maurice Blanchot said: The essense of picture is that it’s totally outside, without any intimacy, but it’s more inaccessible and mysterious than thoughts of our inner space. Narration of film is a langauge of visual metaphors, atempt to take invisible things as visible shapes,. The whole arsenal of film techniques, animation, montage, sound is used to accustom hero’s hazy emotions and visualised them in a living matery. This is similar to expressionism; expressionism from the pioneer age, not connected with an estethic emptiness, copy of painting or designer tricks. Of course, film is close to surrealism. Fusion of real world is unified with a matter of wondrousness; onirical, surreal.
* First moments of films bring quotation from Bruno Schulz’s „Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass”. This is not unintentional, but not for an inflated prestige, even not as a homage to a film based on a novel by Wojciech J. Has (whose films feeded Zalibarek’s sensitivity). This is rather a case of searching for creation’s method. Also Schulz, similar to X, had contended with a lack of time for his art. The everyday life (he worked as a teacher in gymnasium), made him far away from wondrous land, which had a destructive impact on his life. The same problem is well- known today by many artists, film is dedicated to them.
PRODUCTION
The shape of film is definied by recalled expressionist style. The main goal was to separate events and world from context of conrete period or state. The action takes place in invented City – it is not clear, if this a past or future. Outdated machines, retro ornaments suggest backwardness, but it could be also vision of alternative future. Obsolete City is absorbed by destruction. To show setting momentum, 3D team will create hipereal 3D models of buildings, trams and equipment. There will be made a hundreds of textures with rust, patches, breaches and fissures. Additionaly, there are shops’ interiors (butcher’s shop, second- hand bookshop), shopping precinct, viaduct, tram stop a’la Art Nouveau style, car wrecks, demolished apartment house of X will be created.
Everything will be rendered by Cinema4d R12, with a help from hipereal render module VRay. There are hundreds of processors’ cores needed for animation counting. It takes over a year of team’s collective work. Apart from the City, they have to make a hero’s inner space. This is a case of creative imagination. One of a symbolical artefacts within X’s subconciussness will be Loins (See Annex – visualisation), a piece of brick, which non stop gives birth to horse’s corpses – they are seen, when hero thinks about his nonsense work with advertising. Of course, a sequense will be rendered by Cinema4dR12. But the film won’t be dependend only on digital technique. There will be scenes with actors and surreal machines made by Robert Lenard (instalation’s creator from Wrocław).
