WHAT IS A WORK-POINT ? A work point is a place where a person may perform their work from a specific location for more than two hours. Examples of workpoints include coworking workpoints, 1 to 1 workstations (assigned), DWE workstations (unassigned), and DWE alternative workpoints. Coworking and DWE alternative workpoints include high top tables, round tables, booth seats, and high-back chair with tablet arm. Features of workpoints include access to a work surface, ergonomic seating to

specific neighborhood. Employees, visitors, and clients are encouraged to utilized these spaces. Coworking settings are counted as unassigned workpoints including an appropriate surface and seat that a person

accommodate longer duration of use, appropriate natural and artificial lighting, access to power and data. Work points may or may not also be equipped with monitors, which depends on the kind of workers being accommodated and the

an assigned desk where a person works on a daily basis. Seats in meeting rooms or at open collaboration areas should not be counted as a workpoints. If we were to only look at this portion of the floor plan, we would count a total of (50) 1 to 1 workstations.

DWE alternative workpoint is defined as an unassigned shared work settings that can be used for more than two hours. DWE workpoints are integrated within a DWE neighborhood which provides the advantage of access to the entire neighborhood rather than coworking workpoints which are located in communal zones. DWE workpoints are counted in 1:2 ratio. If we were to only look at this portion of the floor plan, we would count a total of 17 DWE workpoints.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Our proposal for a Valentine’s installation in Times Square is inspired by the particular history of this iconic New York urban space and its presence in the eyes of the world as a byword for a thriving intersection of people, place and culture. We reflected on the inspiring and hopeful brief for this project in the context of our current polarized and charged political climate and felt strongly that the solution must address not only the idea of romantic love that Valentine’s Day has come to signify, but larger expressions of love as it affects our societies and communities. With this in mind, we explored the tectonic possibilities of intersecting shapes and examined what happens when two different planes intersect. Our search for simplicity in this process revealed the form of our proposal: two converging planes that together make an iconic “X” , which, when met at their intersection by a cylindrical volume, creates a heart-shaped space. For us the message is: at the meeting of difference and division, when justice, equality and democracy are inserted, love can be created. Responding both to the nature of the site and the way we communicate love, our iconic X shape symbolizes the intersection of the world and New York that Times Square represents. The X has has been the universal symbol for a kiss since 1813, ending affectionate messages, love letters, heartfelt notes, cards and emails all over the world. The X is the mark of a vote, of democracy and the freedom of choice for the individual. It also playfully references the vestigial XXX history of Times Square. At 18 feet tall, this is taller than the average installation. We felt the height works strongly with the proportions of the space and site, and allows the viewer to inhabit the work and the viewing distance to discover the heart shape within the X. As the public engages with the sculpture and steps on the platform of the X, the heart and the edges light up the more people inhabiting the space, the brighter the light. Along the visible interior, words and phrases such as “Democracy,” “Equality,” and ‘Don’t forget the flowers!” are inscribed, as if on the inner band of a wedding ring, to be discovered as the viewer approaches the work.

Materially, the structure is light, reflective and luminous: made of laminated layers of reflective structural honeycombed aluminum, it will be safe and strong for use in public space. The X will glow, being a powerful, playful, easily recognizable contribution to Valentine’s Day in New York and the meaning of Love in public space.

X is for Love.
