Performance Notes This piece is generally transmitted aurally. There are three separate sections to the work (Opening, Middle, Closing). The Opening and Closing sections are notated as prose while the Middle section is notated in a tab. system. (2,3,4,5,1,2,3,4,5,1). The octave can either be determined by following a melodic line or in some cases an underscore shows to choose the “lower octave�. Each box equates to 1 sixteenth note. The middle section is broken up into two different pages (Fast and Slow). These may be repeated as many times as needed before going from section to section. The CengCeng is not notated but can be used to show shifts in sections.

Score Section 1 Strike the smallest gong (let it ring) All instruments quietly improvise without using their mallets (Create a subtle ‘wash’ of sound) after a while: Strike the smallest gong (let it ring) Jegogan & Jublag quietly improvise using mallets All other instruments continue as before after a while: Strike the smallest gong (let it ring) Jegogan, Jublag, Ugal quietly improvise using mallets All other instruments continue as before after a while: Strike the smallest gong (let it ring) Jegogan, Jublag, Ugal, Reyong quietly improvise using mallets All other instruments continue as before after a while: Strike the smallest gong (let it ring) All instruments quietly improvise using mallets Following the Ugal begin to increase activity and dynamic level Strike the middle gong (let it ring) Pick one pitch and strike that pitch together as ensemble (follow Ugal’s cue) Ugal: Slowly increase tempo until ensemble is striking key (in eighth notes) at roughly 160 BPM after a while: Start to move up/down in pitch until you are striking “2” When ensemble is all together on “2” Strike the largest gong (let it ring)
