Architecture refers to a series of solo instrument pieces utilizing the kinect camera and projection art. Currently, each work utilizes single channel video projection and four channel audio. In each piece the physical motion of playing the instrument controls different factors in the multimedia such as panning, rotation, and size.

In the case of this solo for viola the kinect is tracking bow placement and distance from the individual. Most of this piece is improvised based on a set of instructions.

Technical Set-up 1 laptop computer with Max or Max Runtime and Synapse (bellow) 1 Microsoft Kinect Camera 1 audio interface with 4 outputs 1 microphone 1 mixing board 4 channel quad loudspeaker placement 1 projector The maxpatch is available directly from composer at http://zackmerritt.com This piece also requires a copy of Synapse. Synapse is a free program available at http://synapsekinect.tumblr.com/post/6305020721/download that allows the kinect camera to communicate with Max.

1. Set up 4 channel audio quad speaker placement around audience.

2. Set up projector to cast behind the performer. Projector should be set up as a “secondary display� and not mirrored.

(if possible use rear-projection) 3. Connect Kinect to computer and start Synapse

(make sure camera is also connected to a power source) 4. Start max patch.

5. Map body to camera by standing with arms in the air and legs apart.

6. Once lines appear in synapse the camera will start to communicate with MaxPatch.

7. Move projection window (titled projection) to secondary display.

8. In Max press tab on the keyboard to start audio, set projection display, and send camera data into patch.

9. Press space bar to start piece. Piece finishes automatically after 4 to 5 minutes. (Audio will shut off when piece concludes)

Score Info

Piece can begin in any box. Each box is connected to another box via a line segment. Performer may move between boxes that are connected.

Between different melodic boxes are technique or dynamic boxes. While the perfomer begins the connecting box they will slowly implement the new dynamic (via a crescendo or decrescendo) or technique (by moving the bow in a different manner). That dynamic or technique is continued until a new dynamic or technique box has been reached.

for example: Sul Ponticello will continue through all melodic boxes

and dynamic boxes until a new technique box has been reached.

The meldoic boxes should be played as connected as possible with only a small break to implement a new hand or string position. The melodic boxes can be performed at any tempo however a slower tempo is generally preferred.

Perfomer should begin the piece at a mezzo forte with ordinary bow placement. When the projection fades out the performer should finish current melodic box then finish. (performer may wish to map-out their path prior to performance but this is not entirely necessary.)
