Empowering Team Members to Thrive The future looks bright at Zachry. Eli Embleton, dream manager, recently shared the backstory behind Thrive Lights, an initiative designed to empower team members to take control of their personal well-being and achieve meaningful progress in their lives. The program’s origins trace back to a visit to Paraguay, where the team learned about the Poverty Stoplight, a unique tool developed by Dr. Martín Burt of Fundación Paraguaya. Inspired by its global success, the team adapted the program (called Thrive Lights in the U.S.) to work at Zachry. Thrive Lights uses a simple self-assessment survey based on the metaphor of a stoplight — red for challenges, yellow for workin-progress areas and green for thriving aspects of life. Team members evaluate themselves across 49 indicators, mapping areas like budgeting, estate planning, physical activity and income. From there, a personalized dashboard enables individuals to prioritize and tackle their challenges one step at a time.

Mariana Barahona, EAP coordinator, also created the Thrive Card: a wallet-sized card for team members to write their top goal on, giving them a constant reminder of what their next priority is. On a larger scale, the aggregated data reveals common focus areas for entire job sites, allowing teams to collaborate on shared goals. Pilot programs were launched last year at ZUUS, Embassy Suites Airport and the Solms Plant. All three pilots have shown remarkable results, leading to creative solutions. For example, at the Solms Plant, all team members were given pedometers to track day-to-day movement throughout a 12-week period to focus on building efficiencies. Embleton says the plan is to roll out Thrive Lights companywide starting in the first quarter, bringing its transformative potential to the greater Zachry team.

NEW

PROJECTS & UPDATES

ZUUS Wins Again with CPS Energy

Big Changes Coming to South Texas

Project 24045

Two major projects will soon be underway in South Texas as Zachry mobilizes to deliver much-needed improvements to critical interstate highway and utilities infrastructure.

Zachry Underground Utility Services (ZUUS) recently secured another three-year underground residential electrical distribution rehabilitation contract with CPS Energy, extending its decadeslong partnership with the nation’s largest municipally owned natural gas and electric company. Curtis Schwartz, operations manager, says the contract has been a cornerstone of ZUUS operations for more than 30 years, with a rebid every three years to keep the partnership as competitive as possible. The scope of work includes a wide range of critical services across CPS Energy territory, from the replacement of direct-buried cables, transformers and service lines, to handling overhead-to-underground conversion contracts and singlespan replacements during outages — leaving no shortage of opportunities for Schwartz and his team to showcase ZUUS’s expertise in complex utility installations.

Rebuilding Major Roadways: 1604 Project Update

Project 24075 In Bexar County, the I-410 Overpass Reconstruction Project is set to modernize a key transportation corridor at Binz-Engleman Road. With work scheduled to begin at the end of the first quarter, the $84 million project will involve a complete overhaul of the main lanes in both directions along with replacement of two older bridges and the addition of a southbound frontage-road bridge. Project Manager Adam Saur says his team is focused on prioritizing safety and minimizing disruption to commuters.

Project 91028 Spike Hubenak, senior project manager, recently shared exciting updates on Zachry’s work to improve the seven-mile stretch between Stone Oak Parkway and the I-10/1604 interchange in Northwest San Antonio. The project’s main aim is to alleviate traffic and congestion in one of the area’s busiest corridors. Hubenak says they met a major project milestone by expanding the main lanes from two to three in each direction, but ultimately the roadway will go to three to five lanes each way. And with the addition of HOV lanes, smoother traffic should flow for years to come. A highlight of the work so far came with the demolition of the Blanco Bridge last November — a pivotal step toward constructing a diverging diamond interchange, which should optimize traffic efficiency in the area.

Project 24091 Further South at the Wesley Seale Dam on Lake Corpus Christi, Saur’s team is gearing up for a $25 million renovation. This 34-month project will cover the replacement of two aging spillway crest gates, retrofitting 25 additional bays on the dam with the installation of a new dewatering system using new stop logs. Saur says a new gantry crane will also be added for flexibility in moving stop logs to any section of the dam, which plays a vital role in supplying water to the City of Corpus Christi, making this project a much-needed infrastructure improvement to the region’s long-term water management.

Ongoing work includes completing the connectors at the I-10 and 1604 interchange, with Zachry’s portion set to finish in first quarter 2025. The final tie-ins with the Segment 2 contractor is expected in second quarter 2025. Despite challenges like resource coordination and working among heavy traffic, Hubenak and his team remain committed to delivering a transformative infrastructure project that will benefit the community for decades to come. The project is on track to meet its scheduled completion by the end of 2025. ZACHRY ADVANTAGE | 5

PLANTING THE SEEDS OF

CHANGE

Anna Klug, IT Applications – Payroll and Time, stepped into her new leadership role with renewed determination setting her sights on a bright future for Zachry Women Breaking Ground (ZWBG). With more than 86 members and growing, Klug says this is an exciting moment for the group, which continues to build momentum as a key resource for advancing women in construction and engineering. The recent Seeds of Change conference, held at the Embassy Suites by Hilton San Antonio Landmark Hotel, brought together 75 attendees, including members of ZWBG plus participants from external organizations. The conference offered workshops, exercises and panels designed to inspire professional growth and innovation. Christie Boubel, director of accounting, and Maribel Salas, HR support, led attendees through a transformative shifting exercise to change mindsets from negative, “belowthe-line” thinking to a positive, “above-the-line” approach. Building on the lessons from the 2023 Leadership Conference, Megan Medina, director of talent management, helped members discover how to leverage their strengths to achieve professional goals. The event also featured a panel on “Stories of Success” with moderator Susan LaBrie, interactive strength-building exercises and a thought-provoking painting session envisioning the future

Pictured above: Conference attendees at the October 2024 conference

of women in the field. Angela Taylor, executive director of Construction Careers Collaborative, delivered an empowering keynote address providing attendees with practical insights on finding and using their voices in the industry. Klug envisions a future where groups like ZWBG are no longer needed because inclusion and equality will have become integral to workplace culture. To achieve this, she’s leading the organization into 2025 with ambitious plans that started with a leadership retreat in late January. The retreat united outgoing and incoming leadership teams to set clear goals for the coming year and build a discussion around how best to reach them. With her inspired leadership setting the tone, Klug and her team are poised to help ZWBG grow alongside the Pictured above: ZWBG leadership team at Rancho Blanco company at large. And as the Seeds of Change conference demonstrated, the path forward is one of collaboration, innovation and empowerment for all.

A Very Blue Christmas at Zachry Everyone rallied together over the holidays around the annual Blue Santa event, which came complete with holiday contests, festive fundrasing, a successful food drive, and plenty of cheer. At Hilton Palacio del Rio, the fun was led by Leno Coronado, director of loss prevention, who took over planning duties in 2024. Coronado organized multiple fundraising activities, including $5 Friday “Blue Energy” donations, bake sales featuring Mexican sweet bread and, of course, tacos. These efforts raised $3,000, which was used to purchase 400 toys for children in need. 6 | ZACHRY ADVANTAGE ISSUE 1, 2025

The Palacio ballroom was then transformed into a festive setting for Blue Santa’s arrival on December 7 complete with a toy-filled sleigh and a visit from representatives of the local police department. Contributions even came from a couple who requested toy donations in place of wedding gifts. Over at Zachry’s corporate office, team members brought a literal truckload of toys for their toy drive — “enough to fill a U-Haul truck,” said Jim Austin, VP, chief estimator. Blue Santa’s arrival brought out the competition at the corporate celebration, too. The Christmas Cookie Contest crowned Michelle Bartlett as the winner for her sourdough sugar cookie snowmen. The Reindeer Games saw team members come together for a friendly showdown of trivia knowledge. And the Gingerbread Contest showcased employee creativity with the ZCC HR team earning first place, followed by Capitol Aggregates HR in second, and Tyler Janik and Mason Livingston from estimating in third. Other team members who made the celebration possible were Carla Esparza, Trish Benavides and Joyce Caples, ZCVC Blue Santa Committee members.

Capitol Aggregates

Expands with Strategic South Texas Acquisitions Capitol Aggregates is continuing its upward trend with the recent acquisition of four new properties in South Texas. In November 2024, the company purchased the aggregate assets of Tindol Construction marking Capitol’s first-ever asset acquisition as part of a broader plan to expand its portfolio. The deal included two sand and gravel quarries as well as two limestone pits near Beeville, which are now renamed Capitol Aggregates Mathis Sand and Gravel, San Pablo Sand and Gravel, Pettus Materials and Pawnee Materials, respectively. The acquisition brought 27 new team members on board plus additional resources to the company’s operations. According

to Scotty Gerbes, vice president of aggregates, the acquisition aligned perfectly with Capitol’s long-term vision for growth. “These assets fit well within our existing operations, which lets us scale up and prove to the market, customers and team members that our vision is moving forward,” Gerbes explained. The four properties boast 50 million tons of reserves with annual production expected to reach 500,000 to 650,000 tons, positioning the company for consistent growth. Mike Wallace, vice president of sales and marketing, highlighted the impact of this deal for both Capitol Aggregates and the markets it serves. “This acquisition gives us a foothold in two

key markets in Texas. The Mathis property allows us to serve the Corpus Christi area while the San Pablo site positions us to support the growing Laredo market,” he said. Wallace noted the challenge of integrating these new operations, each of which are further from Capitol Aggregates’s home base, but also emphasized the company’s commitment to bringing the new facilities and team members into the Capitol family. Looking ahead, the team plans to evaluate complementary locations and markets with a goal of increasing revenue by 50 percent throughout the next three-to-five years. The company

is targeting a combination of capacity increases at existing sites and additional acquisitions to fuel this aggressive growth strategy. “We’re excited to get back to the Laredo market where Zachry started in 1924 while expanding our reach across South Texas,” Gerbes added. With a combination of vast reserves, enhanced equipment capabilities and strong strategic alignment, Capitol Aggregates is well positioned to continue building on its legacy of excellence while meeting the growing needs of its markets.

GETTING IN THE

SAFETY ZONE Safety Starts with the Energy Wheel At Zachry Construction, safety is more than a protocol — it’s part of a core value to see that every person goes home safe at the end of the day. Central to this is the Energy Wheel, a powerful tool that builds situational awareness and hazard recognition among team members. Developed from research by the Construction Safety Research Alliance (CSRA) at the University of Colorado Boulder, the Energy Wheel offers a structured way to identify and mitigate risks by focusing on key “energy sources,” or risks, in the workplace.

Pictured above: Anthony Bush and Anna Klug from the IT department lead a UKG demonstration to team members at Capitol Aggregates Solms Quarry.

New UKG Platform Brings Upgrades The recent shift to the Ultimate Kronos Group (UKG) Workforce Management platform expects to streamline workforce management and make team members’ lives easier — all in one place. Phase one of the transition completed on January 13 replaces the aging systems and brings major upgrades to the teams at Capitol Aggregates and Zachry Hotels. One of the biggest draws of UKG is a native mobile app, which allows team members to track time, review schedules, and request time off all from their hand-held devices.

The concept of energy-based safety stems from the understanding that every injury occurs when a person comes into contact with an energy source, says Donnie Connell, director of safety. Whether it’s moving equipment, stored energy or energized electrical systems, recognizing these sources is vital to preventing incidents. While some hazards are instinctively recognized — like the immediate danger of a snake in the grass — others require conscious effort and reminders. The Energy Wheel bridges this gap by breaking hazards into clear categories, like “Stuff That Lifts,” “Stuff That Pinches/Crushes” and “Stuff That’s Built Underground.” This visual and practical approach trains workers to focus their attention on energy-related risks, reinforcing the foundation of strong situational awareness.

“We empowered our team members with real-time access to their punch time,” said Casady Pipes, director of enterprise applications. “It’s a win for both our team members and leadership.” Looking ahead, phase two of the rollout will introduce an advanced scheduling module at Zachry Hotels, which the team expects to improve shift planning in a big way. “This is something the leadership team has really needed,” Pipes noted. “And it’s going to make scheduling that much more efficient.” The team plans to monitor the success of the scheduling tool following its initial rollout and, if possible, look for ways to implement it at Capitol in the future.

Zachry Construction embraces the energy-based safety approach as part of its “Plan Your Work and Work Your Plan” philosophy. By integrating the Energy Wheel into all training and work planning activities, the company empowers team members to identify energy sources, understand the associated hazards and plan effectively to mitigate risks. This proactive approach ensures safety is built into every task, fostering a culture where Every Person Matters®. With the right tools, training and mutual accountability, Zachry ensures that every team member has the knowledge and support to work safely every day. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE

4th QUARTER, 2024

I/Q AWARD PROGRAM WINNERS ZACHRY CONSTRUCTION CORPORATION Ragan Drum Roller Path Refurbishment Project 110701 Tim Greenwood, John Minnock, Billy Taylor The roller path on the Rex 10-yard tilt mixer drum used at the Vince Hagan concrete plant became unevenly worn over time, creating a washboard effect that caused harsh vibrations when the drum ran. This vibration affected the entire front of the plant and caused additional wear on the ring, which could not be feasibly replaced. Replacing the drum could cost between $100k and $400k, so we reached out to four contractors who specialize in resurfacing, but none were interested. Deciding to tackle the problem ourselves, we designed and built a custom grinding machine using a machinist vise that could move on an X and Y axis for fine adjustments, and an adapter plate to mount a 12-inch industrial bench grinder upside down. We used trailer hitch screw jacks to adjust the frame height and double bogie wheels to ensure stability while installing a drum drive on the opposite side to turn the drum as we ground the surface. Initially, we tried using a magnetic drill and torque multiplier; but the drum was turning too slowly, so we switched to a hydraulic motor from an old paver. After three days of grinding, the ring was smoothed out, and the drum runs smoothly once again. Pictured left to right: First Place: John Minnock and Billy Taylor. Not pictured: Tim Greenwood.

A Milestone Moment for the Monarch Monarch’s Topping Out Ceremony The Monarch Hotel marked the completion of the building’s structural framework recently with a topping out ceremony. According to Adam Lopez, project manager, the last of the concrete was poured on December 6 followed by the celebration on December 13. As is tradition, a tree was placed on the highest point of the structure to symbolize growth, prosperity and hopes of good luck. Team members signed a steel beam, which was then lifted with the tree to the top of the building — a memorable moment for everyone involved. Now that the structure is complete, the team turns their focus to the next phases of construction, which include “skinning the building” by installing exterior finishes like windows, panels and stucco as well as beginning interior work on electrical, mechanical systems and drywall. With 20 total concrete slabs and 19 above-ground levels, the Monarch is on track to rise as a testament to Zachry’s innovation and teamwork.

Full-Circle Success Hilton Palacio del Rio is thrilled to welcome back Allen Alderman as director of sales after a 22-year hiatus. Alderman originally left the Palacio to help open the hotel as assistant director of sales at another Hilton in Austin playing a pivotal role in its success. When the hotel began a reorganization, however, he saw an opportunity to return to the city he loves and a property he knows so well. “Allen’s history with our hotel and his expertise in group sales through his extensive experience with hotel associations made him the perfect fit for this role,” says VP of Zachry Hotels Robert Thrailkill, who personally reached out to Allen about rejoining the team. Allen officially started in November and has already made a positive impact. His return marks a new chapter for the Palacio, one that builds on a legacy of excellence while embracing exciting opportunities ahead. Welcome back, Allen!

¡Bienvenido nuevamente, Allen!
