WELCOME TO ARTATTACK! 2022!

Tonight is a celebration of our queer communities and a rallying behind the largest queer theatre in the world. For 44 years, Buddies has provided a space for queer artists to take risks, for queer communities to gather, and for pushing the boundaries of theatre and performance in Canada and beyond. But none of this would be possible without the coalescence of our communities – the artists on our stages, our hard-working staff, our patrons, and you, our ardent supporters.

And it is because of our resilient community that we are able to celebrate these achievements and look forward to another milestone year. And it is because of your steadfast support, especially over the past two and a half years, that we are able to continue doing this necessary work.

Your presence here tonight and your generosity will have a profound impact on Buddies, queer artists, and queer community. Thank you so much for joining us.

ARTATTACK! 2022– 1 –

Buddies in Bad Times Theatre is situated on the traditional lands of the Haudenosaunee, the Anishinaabe, and the Wendat, and the treaty territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit. We acknowledge them and any other Nations who care for the land (acknowledged and unacknowledged, recorded and unrecorded) as the past, present, and future caretakers of this land, referred to as Tkaronto (“Where the Trees Meet the Water”; “The Gathering Place”). Buddies is honoured to be a home for queer, trans, and 2-Spirit artists on these storied and sacred lands that have been stewarded by Indigenous Peoples for thousands of years before the arrival of colonial settlers.

Established in 1979, Buddies in Bad Times Theatre is Toronto’s leading destination for artistically rigorous alternative theatre and a world leader in developing queer voices and stories for the stage. Buddies offers a year-round program that includes a full season of queer theatre, new works festivals, artist residencies, and intergenerational training and education initiatives. In its 44-year history, Buddies has welcomed more than a million people into its home in the heart of Toronto’s queer village and has premiered more than 1,000 new works for the stage, making it the largest and longest-running queer theatre company in the world.

NOTES FROM OUR CURATORS

Malik McKoy

The aim of my selection for ArtAttack! was to include artists who were local to Toronto. As an artist who works with vibrant colours myself, I was drawn to the works of Tessar Lo, Kaya Joan, and Jega Delisca. What ties these works together, beyond their vibrancy, is the painterly approach to multimedia work and the evident hand of the artist.

Tak Pham

For this year’s ArtAttack! Auction, I am putting forward a selection of exciting and innovative voices in Canada’s contemporary art. These artists are advocates, community leaders, trendsetters, researchers, storytellers, and wanderers. Their works reflect complex and beautiful insights into our everyday experiences, questions, internal soul-searching, and spiritual

meditation. While addressing topical subject matters, the ways the artists portray them suggest an optimistic outlook and possibilities for a better future.

The audience will also notice that a few artists here are either from or connected to Saskatchewan. The intention here is to introduce ArtAttack!’s audience to the diverse artistic practices and sensibility available in the land of living skies. You are encouraged to look up, follow, and support the artists following this year’s event.

Andrew Zealley

Tonight, art lives here at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre. Tonight, art helps us to support Buddies in its continuing work as a cultural mainstay for queer Toronto in risky, complex, and contradictory

times. Art helps us understand lived experiences, our own and the lives of others. Take a risk: take art home. This is the important action, tonight. The curator is merely an organizer, a selector. Cutting letters from picture magazines to compose a ransom note: Let’s Help Buddies Now! It is the artist and their work that is critical to movement, messaging, and growth. In this way, I leave the real message of my statement to an artist: What art can offer (if it can at all—to me it seems) is an absence of complexity, a vacuum through which you are led to a state of complete relaxation of mind. After that you may return to the complexity of life again, it may not be the same, or it may be, or you may never return, but that is your problem. (Yoko Ono)

“The excitement, for me, lies not in photographing and reproducing something I can see, but in revealing the imperceptible (and maybe only the imagined) using the physics of light and time and traditional darkroom techniques.”

Bos has been the recipient of many awards and grants and has also been nominated twice for the Scotiabank Photography Award. Her work has been presented internationally and she is a sought -after presenter on alternative photography techniques. Manny Trinh (born 1974 in Saigon City, Vietnam) immigrated to Canada when he was 11 years old. He is a painter and visual artist. Trinh’s practice explores the nuances of contradiction. His vivid impressions of the human landscape of his homeland are major influences on his work.

Manny focuses on the entanglement of fantasy and reality; encapsulating a recognizable human core within surreal technology and splintered mechanical landscapes. The various techniques Trinh employs in wet and dry brushwork found in his acrylic, watercolour and gouache paintings are studies probing the surface and texture of our dichotomous environments, acknowledging generations of cultural evolution. His work can be found at Wall Space Gallery and the Art Manny Trinh lives and works in Toronto, Canada.

Peter Hobbs is a Toronto-based artist who has exhibited in solo and group shows, both nationally and internationally. His work has taken a variety of forms, including naked group performances and ecological comic books. As a long-time advocate of the feminist tenet that the personal is political, he consistently makes art in which his queer sexuality is staged to underscore that pleasure, vulnerability, and risk are not only intrinsic to being human, but they also can be used to pursue a creative mode of self and communal care. His obsession with anal staircases is very much in the spirit of Paul Preciado’s queer declaration that we are all anal workers engaged in an anal communism.

Altered Jockey brand undershorts, printed + signed labels and title sleeve 15.75”x27.5” from an edition of 100 Estimate $2,500 Artwork courtesy Caviar20 Framing courtesy of Akasha Art Projects

General Idea formed in 1967 in Toronto and over the next nearly 30 years, the trio made a remarkable contribution to postmodern art. With their subversive approach and interest in parody and appropriation, General Idea addressed a broad range of social and art-world issues including consumerism, media consumption and the cult of the artist.

At the onset of the AIDS crisis in the early 1980’s, the illness and the apathy/ignorance toward it became a dominant theme in their work culminating in their famous “AIDS” which lampooned Robert Indiana’s iconic “LOVE”.

Another key facet of the group was the discourse around LGBT identity during an era of critical change and awareness in America. “Jockey Short Shopping Bag” is a paradigm of this characteristic from their oeuvre.

Maia Stark is an artist of settler ancestry based out of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Treaty 6. Stark graduated with a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Saskatchewan in 2015. An invested interest in body politics throughout her BFA and MFA led to various research outlets; eventually focusing on concepts of the Grotesque and the Uncanny, specifically as those concepts are described in folktales and fairytales. Stark’s works sometimes portray a duplicated figure, a sort of slanted self portrait, pulling from her experience as an identical twin to contextualize narrative and myth.

Artist’s Proof from an edition of 50 Estimate $2,500

Artwork courtesy of Caviar20

Michael Snow (b. 1929) is one of the most influential and admired experimental and multi-disciplinary Canadian artists. His output spans more than fifty years of production, including paintings, sculptures, photographs, films, books, holograms, projections, installations, musical recordings, performances, and essays. In addition to this diverse body of work, the artist is best know for his”Walking Woman” series and large scale public art.

Perhaps one of the most interesting characteristics of Snow’s output is his ability to alternate between creating work that is populist and work that is avant-garde and esoteric. In 1970 Snow was given a mid-career retrospective at the Art Gallery of Ontario and was the first artist to have a solo presentation at the Canadian pavilion at the Venice Biennale.

This print depicts a man with an erection groping the iconic Walking Woman. Below the figures there are several lines of text and a thumbnail-sized image of Snow’s walking women at left. caviar20.com // @lovecaviar20

HOW IT WORKS

Register

Be sure to register and pick up your Bidding Paddle in the Cabaret as soon as you arrive. With your paddle, you can bid on any lot in our live and silent auctions. Spend less time in the checkout line by authorizing the purchase of your items to either your Visa or MasterCard when you register and items successfully bid on can be immediately purchased. All you have to do is pick them up at the end of the evening!

Silent Auction

You can bid on items in the silent auction as often as you like using the same bidder number you use for the live auction. The highest bid received by our staff at the time of closing wins - winning bids will be posted on the boards within 10 minutes of the silent auction closing.

The Tuck Shop

All items are available for purchase at set prices, which are listed in the catalogue and on display. Items can be purchased ‘cash-and-carry’ or put on account using the same bidder number you use for the live and silent auctions. You will also find Jessica Thalmann’s Limited Edition Artist Print, Reflections (Highway 407) here.

Payment

You can pick up and pay for your items any time throughout the evening. Buddies accepts Visa, MasterCard, debit, and cash.

Paying by Instalment

Any purchase total of $1,000 or more can be paid for by instalment if you so choose. Speak to a staff member at the registration desk for more information or to set up an instalment plan before you start bidding.

Tax Receipts

If the final purchase price of an item in the live auction is equal to or greater than 120% of the posted estimated value, the purchaser will be issued a charitable tax receipt for the difference between the estimate and the selling price.

Conditions of Sale

Each lot contains an estimated value obtained from sources the ArtAttack steering committee believes to be reliable, but no representation or warranty as to the actual resale value is made or implied. Estimate values include value of framing, where applicable. All sales are final. No purchase can be returned, refunded, or exchanged. All items are sold as is, as exhibited. Buddies reserves the right to share the contact information of successful bidders with the artists whose work they have purchased.
