ARTATTACK! 2023

Buddies in Bad Times Theatre is situated on the lands of the Haudenosaunee, the Anishinaabe, and the Wendat, and the treaty territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit. We acknowledge them and any other Nations who care for the land (acknowledged and unacknowledged, recorded and unrecorded) as the past, present, and future caretakers of this land, referred to as Tkaronto (“Where the Trees Meet the Water”; “The Gathering Place”). Buddies is honoured to be a home for queer, trans, and 2-Spirit artists on these storied and sacred lands that have been stewarded by Indigenous Peoples for thousands of years before the arrival of colonial settlers. Established in 1979, Buddies in Bad Times Theatre is Toronto’s leading destination for artistically rigorous alternative theatre and a world leader in developing queer voices and stories for the stage. Buddies offers a year-round program that includes a full season of queer theatre, new works festivals, artist residencies, and intergenerational training and education initiatives. In its 45-year history, Buddies has welcomed more than a million people into its home in the heart of Toronto’s queer village and has premiered more than 1,000 new works for the stage, making it the largest and longest-running queer theatre company in the world.

QUEERNESS IS AUDACIOUS. queer audacity is refusing the rules of engagement. it’s daring to step outside, around, and beyond the status quo. it’s the nerve to say, fuck your biology, we choose our families, we choose our communities, we choose this love, this desire, these genders, this sex. it’s the courage to choose tenderness and beauty in the face of violence and pain. queer audacity rejects false binaries and the boring chatter of ‘too much / too loud / too butch / too camp,’ and embraces the extra AF. queer audacity is daring to invent whole new futures. for 45 years, queers surrounding buddies have had the audacity to insist on this space, this art, these parties. sure, it’s been messy at times. we have laughed, grieved, lost friends and lovers, and even fought along the way. the future we’re chasing is an unruly thing with a habit of never quite arriving. i’m honoured to be invited to lead this organization that carries so much history toward the next iteration of that unruly future. i’m beyond grateful for the community of steadfast supporters gathered around it. once again, it’s a new buddies, same as ever: sexy, audacious, and unapologetically queer. thank you for standing with us.

Notes from our curators Noor Alé Art is an agent of social change. It is endowed with the transformative power to initiate conversations, spur ideas, and galvanize cultural movements. Reflecting on the legacy of Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, and its role as a vital pillar for artistic expression and queer liberation, I was inspired to select works by artists who are rooted in deep-rooted networks of care, kinship, and solidarity. Community is built through shared values that enrich us collectively, and it is through a selection of works by Amanda Boulos, Alyssa Goodman, Tyler Matheson, Mahsa Merci, Alexander McLeod, and Philip Leonard Ocampo that center an ethos of collective care and individual empowerment. The chosen artworks

are steeped in the themes of identity, mythology, and dreamscapes—ideas that form the fabric of our imagination, desires, and memories. It’s everything that makes us human. Tonight, at Buddies, we will celebrate the powerful spirit of dissidence in all of its exuberance, and I hope that these works inspire you to see the world as a mirror that affirms your beauty, brilliance, and strength.

Golboo Amani What does it mean to be the largest and longest-running queer theatre company in the world? It is no small feat. To have physical spaces for artists in this city seems more and more like an intangible dream these days. And yet, like a gem – 3 –

suspended in a heap of hard surfaces, Buddies in Bad Times Theatre sparkles every time the stage lights turn on and lay bare the creative impulse to externalize what lives within our hearts and minds. It is the fruit of radical love. A space for us and our determination to exist freely and in jubilation of both our individual uniqueness and our shared sense of community. We have come so far and yet we are reminded everyday, our work is not done. I want to extend my deep gratitude to Francisco, Alize, Farihah, Mani, Naz and Cole for their tender and complex contributions to this event and to the Buddies team for the opportunity and support.

ARTATTACK! 2023

Jordan Browne These works showcase the varied practices of Toronto-based artists, including pieces by Ryan Van Der Hout, Kirk Lisaj, Janice Reid, Andrew Scheglov, and Christopher Sherman. With mediums spanning painting, photography, and mixed media, each artist offers a distinctive aesthetic and conceptual perspective. Together, they represent the rich diversity of voices within Toronto’s dynamic art scene. Van Der Hout transforms the conventional perception of the photographed object by intricately adorning his black and white photograph, “Orchid” with rhinestones, thereby reflecting his cross- disciplinary approach as both an experimental photographer and sculptor. In contrast, Lisaj’s photographs in Pico do Arieiro offer a gentler touch, imbuing emotive qualities that allow for meditative reflection. Scheglov, a perceptual ARTATTACK! 2023

painter with an abstract sensibility, creates pieces that embody the intersections of his Queer identity and Russian heritage. Reid, channeling her Canadian-Jamaican lineage, amplifies Black subjects by reshaping narratives through fashion and the urban landscape. Sherman captures the essence of Queer desire in his intimate portraits, mirroring the multifaceted Queer community of Toronto. The selected works, distinct in their expression but united in spirit, celebrate not only the individual modes of artistic expression but also the broader narratives of the diverse communities they represent.

Troy Seidman Have you seen the episode of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt where Titus explains the « Al Gore Rhythm »? Well, no matter how smart the machines become, I don’t think they – 4 –

will ever master understanding one’s appreciation for visual art. Collecting art (if you’re fortunate) or simply having a strong curiosity / engagement with art is the ultimate expression of one’s individuality. Yes the Al Gore Rhythm can probably figure out what you might binge watch - but tv and movies are not on the same level as fine art; it demands a different type of thought as the latter requires the viewer to construct or find meaning, narrative or beauty. Could the machine have predicted that I’d be equally passionate about Charles Pachter (with his charming version of Canadian pop art) and Jade Rude (with her sleek playful minimalism)? I hope this seemingly random group of art work resonates with Buddies’ audience. While I won’t try to cram these creators under a single theme, I’ll simply celebrate their creativity and contributions and acknowledge my fingerprint and selfish selections. Hopefully during this auction you’ll do the same!

Francisco-Fernando Granados was born in Guatemala and lives in Toronto, Dish With One Spoon Territory. Since 2005, his practice has traced his movement from convention refugee to critical citizen, using abstraction performatively, site-specifically, and relationally to create projects that challenge the stability of practices of recognition. His work has developed from the intersection of visual arts training, working in performance through artist-run spaces, studies in queer and feminist theory, and early activism as a peer support worker with immigrant and refugee communities. His exhibition project ‘who claims abstraction?’ is currently on view at Simon Fraser University Galleries in Vancouver with an accompanying book created with SFU and Publication Studio Vancouver, titled who claims abstraction (with a difference)?.

@franfergra Joanne Tod (b.1953) is a renowned Canadian artist acclaimed for her masterful figurative paintings. Tod has depicted a wide range of subjects throughout her illustrious career. The human figure, pattern and interiors have been recurring and essential elements of Tod’s oeuvre. Over the last ten years, portraiture has become an increasingly significant part of her output, both high-profile commissions as well as more idiosyncratic self-initiated portraits, such as her recent installation of “head-shots” paintings of the entire Toronto Raptors team.

HAROLD TOWN Stretch (Blue Raspberry) 1971 Lithograph / serigraph 29” x 40” Edition of 99 Estimate $3,500

Artwork courtesy of Caviar20 and the estate of Harold Town

Harold Town (1924-1990) is renowned in Canada for his prolific, versatile and dynamic body of work. Town was dubbed the “Picasso of Canada” for his ever-changing aesthetic and perennial creativity. While Town became one of the leading artists of the Painters Eleven group, he had an important and lifelong connection to printmaking. While Town had made major accomplishments in abstraction, the stretch series was a major departure from previous non-figurative works. Interestingly when he debuted the “Stretch” works they were initially met with critical ambivalence. Harold Town’s oeuvre has little connection to minimalism, in fact Town can be understood as a maximalist, always aiming for extravagance and bravado. Today, the Stretch series looks remarkably contemporary. For the uninitiated, many assume this body of work to be brand new. caviar20.com // @caviar20gallery

Intermission

Kris Knight is a Canadian painter whose narratives revolve around representation, queerness and intimacy. He is interested in the portrayal of diverse modes of masculinity, transforming various stereotypical traits often used to demean queer men into work that celebrates tenderness, vulnerability and ambiguity. The reflexivity of his narratives is rooted in personal memory but also depict life in the present, where halcyon queer moments have impact without being sensationalized. The pastel and tonal oil paintings he makes conjure a series of shifting moods, themes and experiences that are connected by a wide range of positions regarding the private and public self. Working from personal images of staged scenes in the studio as well as found imagery and historical references, Knight’s paintings present a quiet, elegant world dominated by sensitivity and subtle melancholy.

Lot 27 – curated by Jordan Browne

ANDREW SCHEGLOV Club (study)

2020 Oil on paper 10.75” x 10.75” Original work Estimate $2,300 Artwork courtesy of the artist Framing by Akasha Art Projects

Andrew Scheglov is a Hamilton based figurative painter. Andrew’s work centres around themes of identity, specifically the intersection of his queer and Russian immigrant experiences, as well as memory, nostalgia, and belonging. On a formal level, he attempts to balance his training as a classically trained perceptual painter with more abstract strategies to create narrative driven works. A major part of his practice revolves around the creation of imagery that engages with motifs of intimate queer portraiture in quotidian domestic or outdoor settings, which attempt to recreate a spontaneous, snapshot-like aesthetic in paint and capture private moments of joy, innocence and desire. In all his work, Andrew attempts to address the psychology of his sitters in an empathetic way. andrewscheglov.com @secondhand_fresh

LIZZ ASTON

The Kalends

2020 Hand-cut, painted and dyed Japanese hozo paper 19” x 18” Original work Estimate $2,450 Artwork courtesy of the artist

Lizz Aston’s practice is informed by the history and production of textiles and decorative arts. She has been commissioned public artworks for Harvard University, Holt Renfrew and Lululemon and has worked on sponsored projects with H&M Canada, the City of Toronto, 3M and the Japanese Paper Place. Her work is represented in public and private collections and has been exhibited across Canada, the US, Australia and South Korea. The title of this work “The Kalends” (or Calends) refers to the calendar, or the first day of the month in the Roman Calendar. Aston was inspired by the collective experience of time, and the dissolution of the normally rigid / chronological time during the global pandemic. Calendula Officinalis, or Calendula flowers are also named after the calends because they bloom on a monthly basis. The colors and forms in this piece were inspired by Calendula flowers growing in Aston’s garden. To heighten the form’s impact, Aston elevates the cut-out with an intricate structure of pins thereby creating dramatic shadows. lizzaston.com // @lizzaston

ZACH GREAR Goddess

2021 Marker on found image 11” x 8.5” Original Estimate $900 Artwork courtesy of the artist Framing by Akasha Art Projects

Zach Grear is a self-taught artist inspired by Queer erotica and tattoo iconography. He uses markers and collage to alter found imagery, specializing in vintage gay porn magazines he used to shoplift as a teen. Each piece transforms the original image into a new “othered” version of itself. Recurring words and symbols add to this distortion, challenging the original intent of the image. His artwork also includes portraits of his personal heroes along with peers in the contemporary Queer art scene. Zach currently lives in Brooklyn, NY. zachgrear.com // @zachgrear
