Introduction

Proper solid waste management represents one of the major environmental and social challenges facing rural communities. Improper waste accumulation, a lack of recycling habits, and limited environmental education affect the population's quality of life and generate negative impacts on natural resources.

Against this backdrop, the project carried out during the course focused on strengthening solid waste management and utilization in the rural settlement of Encimadas, in the municipality of Samaná (Caldas), with the aim of promoting responsible practices that contribute to environmental protection and community well-being.

According to the Project Management Institute (2021), the seventh edition of the PMBOK Guide proposes a project management approach based on principles and performance domains geared toward value creation. From this perspective, this article analyzes how these principles and domains can strengthen the planning, execution, and monitoring of the project, thereby fostering community participation, decision-making, and the sustainability of the results.

Reflection on the PMBOK principles

According to the Project Management Institute (2021), the PMBOK principles form the foundation for guiding behavior and decision-making throughout the project life cycle. In my view, these principles represent a fundamental tool for managing projects in a way that is more flexible, ethical, and focused on value creation. Unlike traditional approaches based solely on processes, these principles allow management to be adapted to the specific characteristics and needs of each project, thereby fostering more effective decision-making.

In the project to strengthen solid waste management and recovery in the Encimadas rural community, applying these principles is essential for the proper planning and execution of the proposed activities. The principle of leadership makes it possible to guide and motivate the various stakeholders involved, fostering collaboration among the community, local authorities, and other interested parties.

Similarly, the principle of value creation is particularly important, as the project's purpose is not limited solely to improving solid waste management but also extends to generating environmental, social, and economic benefits for the community. Implementing strategies for environmental education, recycling, and waste recovery helps improve residents' quality of life and fosters a culture of sustainability.

Another relevant principle is stakeholder participation, as the project's success depends largely on community commitment. Listening to the residents' needs, encouraging their involvement in activities, and maintaining ongoing communication fosters a sense of project ownership and increases the likelihood of achieving long-term, sustainable results.

Likewise, I consider adaptability and resilience to be indispensable principles, given that changes regarding resource availability, community participation, or environmental conditions may arise during implementation. The ability to adjust strategies without losing sight of the objectives allows for a timely response to these challenges and keeps the project on track to meet its goals.

Finally, the principle of quality guides the implementation of actions that ensure effective and sustainable outcomes, while managing uncertainty facilitates the early identification of risks and the development of strategies to prevent potential difficulties during project execution. Together, these principles strengthen comprehensive project management and increase the chances of achieving a positive impact on the community.

Reflection on PMBOK Performance Domains

According to the Project Management Institute (2021), performance domains represent critical areas that allow for the assessment of a project's comprehensive development and facilitate the achievement of expected outcomes. In my view, the performance domains proposed in the seventh edition of the PMBOK Guide complement the principles by providing a holistic perspective on how a project should be managed to achieve desired results. Rather than establishing rigid procedures, these domains guide management toward meeting objectives through the coordinated efforts of people, planning, monitoring, and adapting to change.

In the project to strengthen solid waste management and utilization in the Encimadas rural community, stakeholder engagement plays a fundamental role, as the project's success depends on the active participation of the community, local leaders, the municipal administration, and environmental agencies. Maintaining ongoing communication with these stakeholders makes it possible

to understand their needs, build trust, and strengthen commitment to the proposed activities.

Mastery of the "Team" domain is also essential, as project execution requires collaboration among various stakeholders, each with specific responsibilities. Working together facilitates the organization of awareness campaigns, training sessions, and waste utilization activities, fostering an environment of cooperation and continuous learning.

Furthermore, mastery of the "Planning" domain allows for clearly defining the project scope, activities, necessary resources, schedule, and potential risks. Proper planning facilitates the orderly execution of actions and enables ongoing monitoring to verify that established objectives are being met.

Likewise, mastery of the "Delivery" domain ensures that expected results truly generate benefits for the community. In this project, these results are reflected in strengthened waste separation practices, increased environmental education, and greater resident participation in environmental care initiatives.

Mastery of the "Measurement" domain allows for evaluating project progress through indicators related to community participation, the execution of scheduled activities, and observed changes in solid waste management practices. This monitoring facilitates decision-making and the implementation of improvements when necessary.

Finally, mastery of the "Uncertainty" domain is particularly important because situations affecting project development such as low community participation, budget constraints, or changes in environmental conditions may arise during execution. Identifying these risks early and establishing response strategies helps ensure the project's continuity and the achievement of its objectives.

In conclusion, I believe that applying the PMBOK performance domains strengthens project management by facilitating organized planning, effective coordination among stakeholders, and continuous improvement throughout the process. This increases the likelihood of generating a positive, sustainable impact on the community of Encimadas.

Furthermore, applying performance domains allows for the proper planning of activities related to environmental education, source separation, recycling, and the utilization of organic waste through composting. This facilitates the assignment of responsibilities, activity monitoring, and the continuous evaluation of results, ensuring the project progresses in line with established objectives.

Another relevant aspect is the management of risks and uncertainties that may arise during project execution. Situations such as low community participation, limited resource availability, or a lack of continuity in certain activities can hinder the achievement of goals. However, the methodology proposed by the PMBOK enables the early identification of these risks and the establishment of prevention and response strategies to mitigate their impact.

Moreover, applying PMBOK principles enhances value creation for the community not only by reducing environmental pollution but also by fostering an environmental culture, promoting the responsible use of solid waste, and encouraging sustainable practices that benefit both present and future generations.

Finally, integrating PMBOK principles and domains allows this project to transcend the resolution of a specific environmental issue and evolve into a community development strategy. The combination of effective project management, citizen participation, and a commitment to sustainability increases the likelihood of achieving lasting results and improving the quality of life for the residents of the Encimadas rural community.

Application to the Project

As noted by the Project Management Institute (2021), the integrated application of principles and domains allows management to be tailored to the specific characteristics of each project. Applying the principles and performance domains from the PMBOK Guide provides a solid foundation for managing the project aimed at strengthening solid waste management and utilization in the rural community of Encimadas, in the municipality of Samaná (Caldas). This

approach enables the project to be carried out in an organized manner, fostering proper planning, efficient resource use, and the active participation of all stakeholders.

Community participation is one of the project's most critical aspects, as the success of the proposed strategies hinges on the commitment of residents, community leaders, educational institutions, and environmental agencies. In this regard, applying PMBOK principles fosters ongoing communication among stakeholders, facilitating the identification of needs, the development of collaborative solutions, and a strengthened sense of ownership regarding the project.

Furthermore, applying performance domains allows for the proper planning of activities related to environmental education, source separation, recycling, and the utilization of organic waste through composting. This facilitates the assignment of responsibilities, the monitoring of activities, and the continuous evaluation of results, ensuring the project progresses in line with its established objectives.

In addition, applying PMBOK principles enhances value creation for the community not only by reducing environmental pollution but also by fostering an environmental culture, promoting the responsible use of solid waste, and encouraging sustainable practices that benefit both present and future generations.

Finally, I believe that integrating PMBOK principles and performance domains allows this project to transcend the solution of a specific environmental issue and evolve into a community development strategy. The combination of effective project management, citizen participation, and a commitment to

sustainability increases the likelihood of achieving lasting results and improving the quality of life for the residents of the Encimadas rural community.

Conclusions

The analysis revealed that applying the principles and performance domains from the seventh edition of the PMBOK Guide serves as a fundamental tool for strengthening the management of the solid waste utilization project in the rural community of Encimadas, in the municipality of Samaná (Caldas). Its approach centered on value creation, leadership, stakeholder engagement, adaptability, and continuous improvement fosters management that is more efficient, organized, and oriented toward achieving sustainable results.

Furthermore, it became evident that performance domains facilitate project planning, execution, monitoring, and evaluation, enabling a timely response to risks, the optimization of available resources, and the strengthening of collaborative efforts among the community, institutions, and other stakeholders. This increases the likelihood of achieving the proposed objectives and generating a positive impact in both environmental and social spheres.

From a personal perspective, I believe that project management goes beyond merely completing tasks or adhering to schedules; it involves leading processes that create real solutions for community needs. In this regard, the project demonstrates that the proper application of the PMBOK framework can serve as a strategic element to promote sustainable practices, strengthen civic engagement, and contribute to improving the quality of life for the residents of the Encimadas rural community.

Finally, this exercise highlighted that combining a robust management methodology with community commitment is a decisive factor in the success of social transformation projects.
