LAKE TRAVERSE, SD HIGH SCHOOL TRIP

THE INSPIRATION:

WHY SERVE:

YouthWorks has been working on the Lake Traverse Reservation since 2005 which is home to the SissetonWahpeton Oyate Tribe, part of the larger band of Dakota Sioux. The Dakota originally inhabited southern Minnesota and eastern North and South Dakota. As more European settlers infiltrated the Minnesota River Valley, taking food sources from the native people, the Dakota signed treaty agreements with the U.S., ceding large portions of their land in order to get food and financial compensation from the government needed to survive. In 1862, due to limited rations, a harsh winter, miscommunication, and broken promises, the Dakota were headed towards starvation. Desperation led to a series of conflicts known as the Dakota War, which ended with the unjust mass execution of 38 Dakota leaders (and had been authorized by President Abraham Lincoln).

Unemployment, poverty and racial disparities are prominent on the reservation. YouthWorks serves as a bridge between the white and native communities in the summer, working to bring people together. By participating in Kids Club, we can connect with kids and help brighten their day and experience the love of Jesus. We also work alongside community members, doing minor home repair and painting. Spending time on the Lake Traverse Reservation serves as a good introduction to the social and racial issues prominent in many reservations in the U.S. and can act as a springboard into educating youth about the lesserknown history of our nation.

Fort Sisseton was established in South Dakota after the war to protect settlers and their new land seized from the tribe. Racial tensions can still be felt today between Sisseton, a mostly white community on the reservation, and the surrounding native communities.

DENVER, CO HIGH SCHOOL TRIP

THE INSPIR ATION :

WHY SERVE:

Denver sits at one mile above sea level, is the birthplace of Chipotle & Qdoba, has the largest park system in the nation (over 200 parks!)and a huge arts scene.

Denver is often listed as one of the best places to live in America, aided by great weather, a thriving arts and cultural scene, and breathtaking views of the Rockies. However, as more people move to the Colorado capital, many are displaced. Younger, wealthier populations are moving into historically low-income areas causing property values and rental rates to rise. This in turn makes it difficult for long-term residents to afford to live in their own neighborhood. Since 2013, there has been a 10% spike in the homeless population in Denver, and a noticeable movement of people from Denver to neighboring Aurora where the cost of living is significantly cheaper.

Despite having a relatively short history, Denver has a very rich a proud past. Initially settled as a mining town, it quickly grew into a respectable major city; its location at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and at the intersection of various trade routes spurred much growth. This helped Denver gain the nickname “Gateway to the West.” Following the trends of most other major cities, Denver is currently experiencing a resurgence of young people, especially families back into the city. Denver courts a wide range of people groups, ethnicities, and socio-economic statuses making it a very diverse city. It also maintains a very strong commitment to green living and outdoor recreation.

YouthWorks has been in Denver since 2000 and has a wide range of partnerships across the city. Many of these partnerships have lasted for years. YO U T H W O R K S . C O M

BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS, NC MIXED AGE TRIP

THE INSPIRATION:

WHY SERVE:

The Blue Ridge Mountains are part of the Appalachian Mountain range and are known for having a blue hue when seen at a distance. The area stretches from North Georgia to Pennsylvania. Rutherford County has experienced some major economic shifts over its history. In the 1800’s, Rutherford county served as a major player in the US Mint, minting over 2 million in gold coins. In the late 1800’s, the textile mills opened and became an important economic force in the county. After being open for about 100 years, the mills closed leaving many people out of a job, causing a countywide economic downturn. Towns like Spindale and Forest City have spent decades trying to make up for the impact caused by the loss of the mills.

Youthworks began serving in the Blue Ridge Mountains in 2002. Beneath the natural beauty and wonder of this mountain range, small towns are struggling to provide the necessary resources for its community to survive. Based on a measure of income, unemployment rate and population growth, Rutherford County is one of North Carolina’s tier 1 economically distressed counties. At the Blue Ridge site in Spindale, NC we partner with local churches and nonprofits to provide activities for children to do in the summer and to assist the elderly through small home repair projects. Outsiders bring fresh energy, willing hands, and can be a huge blessing in helping to accomplish projects.

In recent years the focus has shifted to opening new small businesses including restaurants and shops to revitalize the small towns. In other parts of the county, tourism has served as the main industry. The revitalized downtowns spark hope in Rutherford county.

QUAD CITIES MIDDLE SCHOOL & HIGH SCHOOL TRIP

THE INSPIRATION:

WHY SERVE:

The Quad Cities is a region of four counties in northwest Illinois and southeastern Iowa. The urban core consists of five principal cities: Davenport and Bettendorf in Iowa, and Rock Island, Moline, and East Moline in Illinois. The Quad Cities is home to many agricultural and manufacturing companies, including the John Deere Headquarters.

When most people think of the Quad Cities, they think of rolling plains and farmland. While this small-town feel is present, there are also some common urban issues present in this community today such as homelessness, food insecurity and addiction. The percentage of individuals living below the poverty line is higher than the national average.

Before European settlers arrived, the confluence of rivers had attracted many cultures of indigenous peoples who used the waterways and riverbanks for their settlements. The history of urban settlements in the Quad Cities was stimulated by riverboat traffic. As the Industrial Revolution developed in the United States, many looked to the Mississippi River as a promising source of water power. The combination of energy and easy access to river transportation brought industry to the Quad Cities.

YouthWorks has been serving in the Quad Cities since 2004. Serving in the Quad Cities provides the opportunity to learn from perspectives that may be different than your own. During the week, you will have the chance to share what you’ve been learning about the community, talk about the incredible things you see happening in the Quad Cities and be a part of the ongoing growth God has for this community.
