HIGH SCHOOL TRIP
THE INSPIRATION:
YouthWorks has been working on the Lake Traverse Reservation since 2005 which is home to the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate Tribe, part of the larger band of Dakota Sioux. The Dakota originally inhabited southern Minnesota and eastern North and South Dakota. As more European settlers infiltrated the Minnesota River Valley, taking food sources from the native people, the Dakota signed treaty agreements with the U.S., ceding large portions of their land in order to get food and financial compensation from the government needed to survive. In 1862, due to limited rations, a harsh winter, miscommunication, and broken promises, the Dakota were headed towards starvation. Desperation led to a series of conflicts known as the Dakota War, which ended with the unjust mass execution of 38 Dakota leaders (and had been authorized by President Abraham Lincoln). Fort Sisseton was established in South Dakota after the war to protect settlers and their new land seized from the tribe. Racial tensions can still be felt today between Sisseton, a mostly white community on the reservation, and the surrounding native communities.
WHY SERVE:
Unemployment, poverty and racial disparities are prominent on the reservation. YouthWorks serves as a bridge between the white and native communities in the summer, working to bring people together. By facilitating Kids Club, we can provide a safe place for kids to come and experience Jesus. We also work alongside community members, doing minor home repair and painting. Spending time on the Lake Traverse Reservation serves as a good introduction to the social and racial issues prominent in many reservations in the U.S. and can act as a springboard into educating youth about the lesser-known history of our nation. NASHVILLE, TN HIGH SCHOOL TRIP
THE INSPIRATION:
Nashville is well known as the Music City, drawing musicians and entertainers from around the United States and the world. Popular destinations like the Grand Ole Opry, Broadway, Music Row and many others attract year-round visitors. The city itself is booming economically and culturally and there is a rapid growth of industry and population. Your group will have a wide variety of opportunities to serve the Nashville community. You might serve the elderly, sort donations, work in community gardens, serve alongside food programs or hang out with children at local summer programs. In the evenings, your group will have the chance to explore downtown Nashville or spend time at Centennial Park, taking pictures at the Parthenon, playing ultimate Frisbee or relaxing on the lawn. If you’re looking to extend your group’s trip beyond your time with YouthWorks, there are plenty of sites to visit in the area. YouthWorks has partnered with this community since 2010.
WHY SERVE:
The rapid growth in Nashville creates challenges in the community like gentrification, income disparity and a lack of affordable housing for families who have called Nashville home for generations. There are many organizations in Nashville working towards positive change for the city and providing resources to struggling residents. YouthWorks exists in Nashville to support local organizations that work to resource families in Nashville amidst the frequent changes, including the Nashville Rescue Mission, Habitat ReStore, food programs, thrift stores, nursing homes, and other similar organizations. YouthWorks also partners with local organizations to host summer programming for children in neighborhoods which have been most impacted by the recent growth of the city. YO U T H W O R K S . C O M

BAYOU LA BATRE, AL MIXED GROUP (MIDDLE SCHOOL & HIGH SCHOOL)
THE INSPIRATION:
Located on the Gulf Coast of Alabama, Bayou La Batre is known as the Seafood Capital of Alabama. The town has been referenced in the History Channel’s Big Shrimpin’, the movie Forest Gump and Disney’s launch of the pirate ship, “The Black Pearl.” YouthWorks has partnered with the community for over 20 years through Work Projects and Kids Club. We have walked with the community before and after Hurricane Katrina, assisting in relief and recovery efforts. We have seen the devastating effects of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill on the prosperity of our community friends. As the community has moved past these tragedies, we have moved with them to offer support. The people of Bayou will tell you, “there are three seasons here: football season, hunting / fishing season, and Youthworks season.”
WHY SERVE:
YouthWorks has had a presence in Bayou since 1998 and has become a staple in the life of the community during the summers. YouthWorks serves the community through Kids Club and Work Projects. The Kids Club is seen as a safe place for kids during the summer. Families submit Kids Club applications beginning in early spring. Work Projects, such as painting, yard work, and other small repairs, are also in high demand, with our partners collecting applications for projects year-round.

RAPID CITY, SD MIXED GROUP (MIDDLE SCHOOL & HIGH SCHOOL)
THE INSPIRATION:
Rapid City is on the eastern slope of the Black Hills. The Black Hills were (and remain today) sacred to the Lakota people. YouthWorks has been in Rapid City for over 20 years, partnering with Trinity Lutheran Church for housing and ministry since 2006. YouthWorks has developed great partnerships in the area who help guide the way YouthWorks serves in this community. Throughout YouthWorks’ time in Rapid City, many, long-lasting relationships have developed with service partners. YouthWorks has been partnering with many of the same organizations in Rapid City for over 20 years.
WHY SERVE:
As Rapid City is the largest city in western South Dakota, it attracts many people searching for work. There are about 10,000 people living in poverty in Rapid City. The city has one homeless shelter which is often at max capacity. Serve with organizations directly confronting the issues of homelessness and hunger by partnering with organizations like the Hope Center, Cornerstone Mission, and Feeding South Dakota. Through interacting with the residents in Rapid City, it is the hope that your perspective on the issues affecting this city will be changed. Relationships are a powerful tool to break down barriers of misunderstanding and increase your level of empathy and impact. In Rapid City, you’ll also learn about the native culture through experiential learning and service opportunities. Each week in the summer YouthWorks hosts a community cookout. This event is attended by over 200 people each week and is a real-life example of the living, breathing body of Christ. YO U T H W O R K S . C O M
