On June 29, 2015 a letter was mailed from The Honorable Mayor Elliott Rothman’s Office. This letter was mailed out to the Community Leaders in the city of Pomona. The content of the letter stated, You Are Cordially Invited to attend the 32th Annual City of Pomona Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast. Let me stop right here for a minute and say “God Bless Mayor Rothman, a man that believes in prayer.”

The breakfast took place on Thursday, July 23, 2015 at 7:00 am, at The Thee Chateau Banquet Hall located in the city of Pomona. His letter promised that the Prayer Breakfast would be both inspirational and informational and that it was! The Banquet Hall was filled with Community Leaders, Businesses, Pastors, Faith Based Businesses and the community at large.

The Theme for the breakfast was “Loving My Neighbor As Myself.”

Music was rendered by a wonderful group “Instruments of Praise,” they lifted up their voices to make sure all guests felt welcomed. There were also moments within the hour where an open microphone was offered to anyone who felt lead to come up and sing. Music packets were given to all the guests and there was a Sing-A-Long time for all to sing if they so chose. The gentleman on the keyboard played great and voices were lifted up in unity singing some good old gospel songs.

The two speakers for the breakfast were both powerful men of God. Senior Pastor Victor Zesati of Victory Outreach in Pomona,

and Senior Pastor Craig Lawrence of New Life Community Church. These Pastors spoke and broke it down about Loving Your Neighbors as they both brought the Holy Spirit and the wisdom that is needed to bring such a powerful message to the listening audience. I know everyone got the message and left knowing that we must as the theme is “Loving My Neighbor As Myself.”

Another highlight at the breakfast was the Strength Award that was given to Ms. Beverly A. Sanks Guidry. This award was given by event Co-Host Amos Young Sr., Senior Pastor of Kingdom of God Revelation Ministries. The Student National Medical Association (SNMA) of Western University School of Osteopathic Medicine took the stage and all of them one by one gave Ms. Guidry accolades. It was wonderful to see and hear how they appreciated her guidance and involvement into their education.

Helen Smith-Draper of X-cessories N’ Things made the announcement to the audience about a wonderful Event happening in the City of Pomona for Youth, Females Veteran, and Ladies.

WHY SHOULD I GRADUATE? Most colleges and technical schools will not admit you without a high school diploma. Not only that, but a high school dropout is ineligible to 90% of jobs in America.

If you hope to pursue a specific career, such as web developer, mental health counselor or financial consultant, higher education generally is a must.

Almost all jobs that pay more than minimum wage require a high school diploma.

One example is that you’ll be prioritized when you turn in your resume over people who don’t have a higher education. I’m Absolutely Positively Wonderful!!

Yes We Can Newspaper is reaching out to those who want to address certain topics and issues and in doing so perhaps their articles can help someone alone life’s journey. We would like to say thank you to Dwayne Elam, now servicing time in a State Prison but had a desire to reach out to others.

I’m Absolutely Positively Wonderful! I go to bed feeling good and I wake-up feeling good. I think positive, speak positive and act positive and as a result more positive things come my way. But, how can this be? I’m locked up in federal prison with a 30year sentence. So, obviously I didn’t always think this way. You’re probably wondering what did I do to get locked up? I’m a first-time non-violent offender in prison for drug conspiracy and money laundering. Oh, and by the way the money laundering was for $640.00 dollars. (That’s right $640.00)

I could argue/make excuses and say I’m in prison because I was raised in the inner city by a single mom without any positive role models or the fact that our justice system is prejudice, biased, unfair, unjust, and the disparity of sentences imposed on African Americans are utterly ridiculous in comparison to other people sentenced but, those are subjects that hopefully I can address at another time. This subject is about being free and if you’re reading this and you’re not in prison you might think that you are already free however, if you’re like most people, you’d be wrong. There are all types of prisons and unfortunately most people are in more than one. The harsh reality is that they don’t even realize it!

Some examples of prisons are; Addictions, Being overweight, Relationships, Greed, Ignorance, Beliefs, Positions/Job Titles, and many other choices that imprison us and yes also, even the type of prisons they send you to when you break yourself against the law because, no one actually breaks the law. The law breaks them.

So, here I am in prison thinking about my life trying to figure out, what the hell happened? I’m looking over it, picking my life apart analyzing every detail and I came to the revelation that the reason I’m in prison and the reason why anything happens to anyone is because of their choices. No one made me do the things that I’ve done that ultimately lead me to be in prison. It’s hard for some people to accept the simplicity of choice and they convince themselves that it can’t be that simple. They say “I didn’t choose this.” I’ve had the opportunity to speak to thousands of men in prisons all over the country and very few of them accept responsibility for their choices.

I convinced myself that I not only wanted more money but when I had more it wasn’t enough. Every person that I’ve talked to in prison wanted something and every person that I’ve talked to on the outside says that they want something. I believe every person receives what he or she wants, especially the ones that say, “I didn’t choose this.” Look at your life, the job you have, the relationship you’re in, your physical health, it’s what you want right? It must be because you chose it. If you’re imprisoned to lying... simply choose to speak the truth. If you’re imprisoned to being overweight... choose to eat healthy and

exercise. So, we’re right back to the power of choice.

My next revelation was; what good is the power of choice if you don’t know what you want? It should already be crystal clear that the life most people have is not the life they want even though they ‘themselves’ chose it. So, it’s not about just wanting something it’s about KNOWING what you want. The dilemma is people already know what they need to do. They say things like; “I know I need to take better care of my health,” “I know I need to stop lying,” “I know I need to get out of this bad relationship,” “I know I need to start saving money for my future,” etc., etc. But, knowing what to do and not doing it is the same as not knowing. At this point I got really excited because I understood that it’s our thinking that determines our reality. It’s even been said that ‘Thoughts become Things’.

I no longer wanted to just get released from federal prison I wanted to be free from all prisons. I wanted to have joy from doing things that benefited others, I wanted good health, I wanted family and not just relatives, I wanted friends not just associates, I wanted to be happy all day everyday. I wanted my life and to live it each day to the fullest!

So, that’s what I chose and I’ve been free ever since. If you want happiness, good health, success, peace, or simply to be free you don’t have to come to prison to find it you can choose it NOW right where you are.

I would like to introduce you to Kirk Franklin.

He was born January 26, 1970. He is an American gospel musician, choir director, and author. He is known for leading urban contemporary gospel, has his own Christian radio 24-hour station and is Host and Producer of Sunday’s Best. I love him because of his courage to go forward and not let anything or anyone stop him from his destiny.

There are so many young people out there who need to know Kirk Franklin’s story as far as knowing they too can make it.

Daniel (my husband) and I have an outreach that is for the youth and young people, the millennial generation. We felt the need of this outreach because they need more encouragement and support, and we realize they will be running our great nation, in 10 to 15 years.

We want them to be ready. We also want them to stay on course and in doing so they will be able to reach their God given destinies. Life is full of ups and downs for everyone, but if we just keep moving one day at a time and striving to reach our goals it can happen. Q: Young people who grow up with few positive role models and few opportunities have a lot working against them. How do they get through the hard work they have to do to end up like you?

A: It’s very difficult. I’ve worked with kids in a youth ministry in California. Every time I see these kids I wonder if I’m building them or reprogramming. I see them on Sunday and no matter how engaging or culturally relevant I am, they leave me and go back to the world on Monday where having sex is not a big thing, using drugs is not a big thing. They’ve got to work through that stuff every day. It’s a difficult task, but not impossible.

Ethel Martin-Miller wanted it to be birthed in truth and feel the truth coming off the pages. When I’m asking people to trust me ... I want them to see it is not somebody coming from Harvard, but it’s somebody who’s been in the pit with them.

Q: There are so many people who started like you but didn’t get on the right track. Why? A: There’s no blueprint on what that looks like — how to move from where you are to where you were created to be. When people are taught, especially at a young age, that they’re created for something bigger, that gives them hope. When you have no hope, you don’t mind mugging or shooting.

Q: You write about how teens need to stop mistaking sex for love and stop having babies at such a young age. How effective can your words be in the hyper-sexuality culture we live in?

First, they will contact your government (family), sign professional contracts (wedding) and mine you professionally (legal marriage). But if you leave your precious minerals uncovered on the surface of the earth, you always attract a lot of illegal miners to come and mine you illegally. Everybody will just pick up their crude instruments and just have a dig on you just freely like that. Keep your bodies deeply covered so that it invites professional miners to chase you.

THE WORD Trail Life USA and American Heritage Girls enter into an historic agreement as Christian-based alternatives to Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts

Trail Life USA (TLUSA) and American Heritage Girls (AHG), the Christian-based alternatives to Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, recently entered into a historic agreement with a Memorandum of Ministry Alliance.

Under the terms of the alliance, which has been approved by both Board of Directors, each organization has agreed to support the other in their shared missions for spiritual and character development of youth through Christ-centered programming.

The alliance will further contribute to the phenomenal growth of both organizations by allowing Troops to operate side-by-side with a shared Charter Organization, typically a church. The groups have committed to jointly pursue methods using their unique and separate programs for the mutual benefit of positive character development in our nation’s youth.

“AHG is thrilled to work with Trail Life USA in bringing Christ-centered, goal-oriented programming to families across the nation. Maintaining our unique identities while leveraging the synergy between the two ministries promises to be an exciting journey,” AHG Executive Director Patti Garibay.

From the Heart, Chronic Depression

As a teenager or if your an adult, this might be of interest to you and can apply to you with Chronic Depression. I go through depression more than the average person.

For me, it comes in waves, like how the tide rises. However, since I’ve had this for a while I’ve learned a lot of things that you can do to help combat depression, and what you shouldn’t do. One of the first things you should do if you’re feeling a bit down is to check and see if you’ve been getting as much sleep as you’re supposed to. Not getting the necessary amount of sleep is bad for your mental health, as well as your physical. Too much time without enough sleep can bring on a phase of depression.

Another thing you can do when you’re depressed is try to drink herbal tea, especially with herbs like St. John’s Wort since it’s confirmed to improve your mood.

Whenever I tried St. John’s Wort it kicked in about 20 minutes after I had it, and it improved my mood a bit. Something that you shouldn’t do if you’re stressed is stay in bed all day. It doesn’t help your body or your mind at all, it just makes you restless. Instead of staying in bed all day, try to motivate yourself to exercise.

Exercising will not only help your body and help you get to sleep, it’ll make you feel that you’ve accomplished something.

I’ve found that exercising daily getting 10 hours of sleep, and eating healthier have dramatically reduced the amount of time that I get depressed.

Keep in mind that I’ve been getting depressed ever since I was a little kid in 2nd grade, and back then I didn’t even know what it was besides it being not normal. Nowadays when my depression kicks in, it lowers my self-esteem a lot, I get in a bit of a snippy mood whenever I’m around people, and it’ll just get worse and worse until I break it. You’ve always got to try and break out of that depression, it’s an endless cycle, especially if you’re in school or at work.

For example, let’s say that you’re depressed, and there’s a big test. Since the depression is making you have a very negative mindset, you go in expecting to fail. Since you expect to fail the test while you’re taking it, you DO fail it, and that just makes the depression even worse. It’s a chain that you must break if you want to live a successful, happy life.

Trust me, you CAN do it, you just need to find the inner strength that everyone has within them and use it to break out of that mindset. I’ve broken out of it many times, and even though it’s chronic so it’ll keep coming back, I never give up on getting out of it. Find something about yourself, or your family, to be proud of, from it being wherever your heritage is from to what your ancestors were/did, if you can draw strength from it, then use it. Be proud of who you are, and most importantly, remember that you always have people that love and care about you.

The National Guard is a fantastic place to serve your state and your country. I’m going to be joining it after I graduate high school. At first, I thought that they only gave you money for working for the National Guard, but as it turns out you actually get some G.I. Bill benefits that will help you even further with you education. The National Guard teaches you discipline and a lot of values that an adult should know. A few of the monetary benefits is a $360 monthly living expenses check, which goes on top of the money that you get for working for the Guard. This makes owning a home or an apartment really easy to pay for.

Secondly, if you’re full active duty in the guard, they help pay for your tuition and books. This means that it’s easier still to go to college and get a higher education. However, to me the best part is that the maximum enlisting age for the guard is 36. This means anyone between the age of 17 and 36, a 19-year range, can join the guard and get these benefits. This just goes to show that it’s never too late to join the guard. You only work a weekend out of the month and 2 weeks a year, plus you get some more money because you qualify for reserve benefits. This will give you enough money to live comfortably for a while.

Also, never forget to plan things out. My plan is to graduate high school, move up to Washington and get a job, then go to the National Guard. Your job can’t fire you for going off to boot camp or doing Guard activities either, it’s illegal if they do. Anyways, once I finish boot camp, I will enroll in a college and get my degree in Psychology. All the while working for my state and my glorious country.

You can even be transferred to different states, like Hawaii, if you want to. You can also be transferred to other states to help with a crisis that they’re having.

Speaking of military benefits, there’s a scholarship that you maybe haven’t heard of. It’s a scholarship for kids who’s parent has died in the line of duty, it gives them a full ride for college for 36 months, which is 3 years. There are so many benefits to joining the National Guard, or any branch of the military really. You get to serve your country, your people, and protect the freedom of other people around the world. The government will take care of you while you’re in it, and even while you’re out of it, you just need to look for the veterans benefits, and I mean really look. There’s tons of stuff out there if you’re a veteran that can help you with your kids, your house, and your education. So go out there, enroll in a military branch, help your country so you can let your country help you.

10 tips for a sucessful business

Success is something all career-driven individuals desire yet it eludes many people -- at least at the levels desired. Why are some businesspeople successful and others not? It has everything to do with habits, beliefs, passion, flexibility and attitude. Often there’s nothing really different between one entrepreneur and another in terms of ability, as each person can do whatever he or she wants. What it all comes down to is having the mindset to set habits in place and keep a balance between attachment and commitment to Here are a few mindsets for success.

1) Choose Courage instead of Fear: To be successful, you have to have courage. And to become courageous, do courageous things. Much of being successful is about going beyond what you think you’re capable of -- venturing into the unknown. Whether you fail or succeed, you will learn and grow. Growth, in and of itself, means attaining a level of success whether it came from success or failure.

2) Believe in yourself: Attitude is everything. A negative attitude decreases success and a positive attitude creates success. Without that belief in yourself, you’ll lack a path to success. Success is something that’s created. It’s not something that merely “happens.”When you firmly believe in yourself, you can achieve anything”. It’s within this belief that you’ll find the power to create the resilience and fortitude needed to keep going when things get tough.

3) Choose good company: Whom you surround yourself with is among the most important choices you’ll make as you climb up the business ladder. Negativity is contagious and if work groups, especially bosses, are negative, there will be a ceiling to your success. To reach the goals you desire, be willing to change bosses if necessary. Or if you’re the boss, rid your team of toxic people immediately.

It only takes one toxic person to destroy the morale of an entire campaign. Further, when you surround yourself with other successful, goal-oriented individuals, you can learn from them and take on some of their habits to add to your own as you proceed along your road to success.

4) Adopt your own milestones: Having a clear knowledge about where you’re headed in business is something that must come from within. When your goals selected by you, you’re more motivated to achieve them. That’s because by achieving these goals, you attain a new desired piece of yourself. When your goals arise from your instigation, they carry a deeper meaning and confer a greater impact on your identity. Each self-selected goal realized adds a depth and an internal expansion to you as a person.

Personal expansion is just one of the great gifts to come from succeeding in your business goals.

5) Have a visual purpose: Visualization is amazingly strong because actions follow thoughts.

A great technique for nurturing your vision and purpose is to make your goals visual.

Some people use vision boards; others opt for treasure maps. And still others set goals identifying specific dates for their achievement. Whatever works best is a matter for the individual to figure out.

Anything that’s written down is more likely to be achieved than visions kept only in the head. When you make your purpose visual, you make it real. When you keep them in your mind, they remain wishes.

6) Accept the challenge: The easy paths up a mountain are few and far between. Challenge will be an essential piece in any type of success in business, and challenge is what creates your growth along the journey. Each challenge obstructing your path provides you with the chance to create a more defined direction toward attaining your dream vendors, customers, managers, employees, and numbers. For this reason, bless each challenge. Each one is a compass directing you toward new business leads, circumstances and opportunities.

7) Be discerning: Having selectivity creates success.

You must think deeply and intelligently about the bigger picture and what it is you need for each step along the way to continue articulating and executing your business goals. Mindfulness means being aware of all angles and staying sharply in touch with the present so that you do not have to clean up mistakes in the future. Be discerning of group dynamics: which person is the best at what job, which customers or deals will take you the furthest and what it is that each moment is calling on you to do or change to be the most efficient. That’s being selective offers you the pursuit of success.

9) Follow your passion. You’re more likely to succeed in business when you’re invested in your passion and making your career fit your personality. There is a way to find passion about anything and everything you do in life.

You may not love every part of your job but tolerating discomforts by looking at the bigger picture makes your investment of time and energy worthwhile. Be willing to love and find purpose in all aspects of what your business requires, commit to it and see what you’re doing as being a benefit to others. When you love the business you’re in, there is nothing that can keep you from wanting to work at it, nurture it and make it grow.

10) Be Grateful: When you see life and career in negative terms, you cannot drive your business up the ladder of success. Then negativity is impeding your progress. You must look at all you have and realize how great what you have is as compared to the situation of many others. When you have this attitude, you stop suffering and complaining about the small stuff. On each receipt you pay out, write thank you. That’s not only to thank the person, event, vendor or customer for what’s provided you but also to give a private thanks acknowledging that you have the abundance necessary to pay for the service, product or event. Habits coupled with flexibility provide you with a path to success. Success is fluid and so rigidity will stand in its way.

Developing these mindsets give you a compass to navigate the ever-changing tides on the way to business and financial goals. These mindsets allow openness and flexibility while also providing you precise direction.

8) Be a risk taker: There are no guarantees on any path to success in life or business.

The unknown is always looming.

Therefore, risk and education are often the mechanisms necessary for knowing more clearly if you’re on the right path. If you’re afraid to take risks, it puts limits on your success and stay where you’re comfortable.

You cannot get what you want if you don’t risk rejection and go for what you desire.

Whitney & Judy: Two Parallel Iconic Lives

They both had powerful and angelic voices that defined their generations. One was a mezzo-soprano, the other an alto. Both began singing at very young ages. One came from a gospel background, the other from Vaudeville.

In their singing styles, they both had an uncanny sense of rhythm, timing, phrasing, swing, soul, dynamics, and a genuine expression of the lyrics. Both had striking good looks and a movie career.

Both were called the greatest singer of their times. One was "the Voice", the other the "Entertainer of the century." With squeaky-clean images, both were called "America's Sweetheart" as they sang for the troops during WWII and the Persian Gulf War.

One has a record seven consecutive No. 1 Billboard Hits and with "I Will Always Love You", the best selling single by a female artist in music history. The other with "Over The Rainbow" sang the number one movie song of all time.

Both had tumultuous personal lives with unhappy marriages, health problems, lateness, canceled concerts, weight issues, and rumors of drug and alcohol abuse.

Sadly, both died young (at 47 and 48) after numerous attempts at sobriety and roaring back with

concert tours and movies before finally succumbing to the final curtain call. Ironically, both were found unconscious in bathrooms. Both left behind teenage daughters (as well as two other siblings for one).

However, their legacies will not be how their lives ended, but how they shared their immense musical talents with the world. By now you know I am speaking of Whitney Houston (19632012) and Judy Garland (1922-1969). These are two soul sisters who led parallel lives through different moments in time.

Judy was Queen during the Golden Age of the MGM Musical. Whitney reigned as the "Queen of Pop" during the Golden Era of the MTV Video.

They both had sublime voices that transcended time and space and they could deliver a song in a way that could transform you forever. They inhabited their music and their lyrics and through YouTube, MTV, and CDs (a few months ago Judy released a fabulous new CD from the Great Beyond where her voice never sounded better titled "The London Studio Recordings") their artistry will live on.

Somewhere over the rainbow, these two great icons are meeting and competing to see who will be the lead singer with the Heavenly

Choir. We are all blessed for having heard and seen them in our lifetimes. They set the standard from which others followed and will continue to emulate. Rather than get caught up with all the media hoopla and drama, let us celebrate their extraordinary lives and be thankful for the God given gifts they shared with us all.
