Launched from a Garage, Local Dance Studio Shines The name Garage dance came from Bernard Holmes (BJ) dancing out of his mother’s one story house garage. Every dance that BJ choreographed came out of the garage from the dance routines, to the sessions, to just having friends come over and dance. At one point, the Garage became the neighborhood kick it spot, everyone would come over to check out the different dances that was being shown and taught. The Garage became so neighborhood popular that BJ began turning the Garage Into an actual studio, placing mirrors up a carpet down.

Bernard (BJ) always used to tell himself that if were to ever have the opportunity to open an actual Dance studio, he would name it The Garage Dance Studio and not only teach dance, but teach life skills as well. After many years of BJ dancing, choreographing and being true to his art, He finally got that shot to open his very own dance studio. The Garage dance studio is a majority Hip Hop driven studio with a dash of other styles. This studio is more of a performing arts facility that strides on technique, style, and strength. The Garage Dance Studio is located in Colton, California, a small city in the Inland Empire. “I pride myself on helping our youth that loves to dance but doesn’t know where to go and doesn’t have a lot of money to support their dance goals,” BJ says. The Garage Dance Studio welcomes kids from all ages and encourages them to push themselves to the level of trying out for the Dance team (Xager8 dance crew). After all said and done, BJ plans on taking the studio to the next level, upgrading the studio to the garage Dance Academy but for now, he will continue to build and grow the studio and the kids.

Xager8 Dance crew is a 2 team crew, from 8 to 18 years old. The advance dance crew is Xager8 Elite, but they all consider themselves as one big team and family.

The Garage Dance Studio has absolutely grown since the team and from then, Xager8 Dance crew has had major opportunities to perform, performing for Ontario Reign

Hockey team at the Citizen’s Bank Arena, located in Ontario, Ca.

There is much more in store for The Garage Dance Studio and Xager8 Dance Crew so until that breakthrough happens, BJ will continue to build the business and everything else will fall into place. Well, this month Yes We Can Newspaper (YWCN) is celebrating seven years distributing good positive news and information to you. I am thankful that I am able to write this article to our readers, advertisers and supporters. Thank you for all the encouraging words and encouragement to us to keep going. Many of you know that the internet, cell phone and other technologically gadgets has made it very easy to read anything you want to read. But, I am so thankful that there are still many readers that still like to pick up a newspaper, seat down in their comfortable chair and enjoy reading a newspaper.

Your Words Might be Hurting My School An 8th Grader Fed Up!

This was emailed to Yes We Can Newspaper with a request to publish it in-order to show that we have children that love school and appreciate their teachers. The letter below is from an 8th grade student name Sarah trying to make her point on several different issues. We are proud to know that we have some smart children that will probably become teachers, principals or some kind of educator in the school system. Sarah an 8th grader has what it takes to be a great politician that can help make things better for our school system and nation one day. Sarah lives in Oakland and the article she wrote is clear and to the point.

Her article is good for all to read no matter where we live.

It’s refreshing to read about students speaking positive about their feeling of their school, teachers and education.

We want to draw your attention to this letter about Montera Middle School where Sarah emotionally speaks out about her feelings of people speaking negative about her school.

This is what Sarah wrote entitling it Badmouthing of Montera!

Badmouthing of Montera, City’s Schools Uncalled For “I am an eighthgrade student at Montera Middle School. Now that a new school year has begun, I once again continue to hear many ignorant comments spoken about Montera Middle School and quite honestly, I am fed up!

I hear things like “there are too many disruptive kids” and “I’ve heard they teach down to the kids” or even “it’s too diverse.”

There is no merit to these words. I take high school-level Spanish and Math, learn from experienced teachers,

backgrounds and more. That’s Oakland.

To those who continue to say negative things and act uneducated about our public school system, please step back and take a moment to think of the impact of your words on me, others and my school. Remember that you live in Oakland, a place celebrated for its differences.

Oakland’s acceptance of others makes it a place I call home.”

Is that Really in the

BIBLE?

It originated from Algernon Sydney in 1698 in an article titled Discourses Concerning Government.

Whatever the original source of this saying, the Bible teaches the opposite. God helps the helpless! Isaiah 25:4 declares, “For you have been a defense for the helpless, a defense for the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shade from the heat...” Romans 5:6 tells us, “For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.

In terms of salvation, we are all utterly helpless. We are all infected by sin Romans 3:23, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” and condemned as a result of that sin Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord,” Nothing we can do on our own can remedy this situation Isaiah 64:6, But we are all as an

While we were still sinners, Jesus died for us Romans 5:8, “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Jesus paid the penalty that we were incapable of paying 2 Corinthians 5:21, “For He hath made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.” God provided the “help” that we need precisely because we could not help ourselves.

Apart from salvation, there is perhaps a way that the concept “God helps those who help themselves” is correct. As an example, if you asked me to help you move a piece of furniture, but then just watched me as I moved the furniture for you, I was not actually helping you. I would be doing the work for you. Many Christians fall into the trap of inactivity. Many Christians ask God for help, but then expect God to do everything Himself. They excuse this by pointing to the fact that God will provide according to His will and in His timing. However, this is not a reason for inactivity. As a specific example, if you are in need of a job, ask the Lord to help you find a job - but then be active in actually looking for a job. While it is in His power to do so, it is highly unlikely that God will cause employers to come looking for you!

WHY IS VOLUNTEERING GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH? BY LISA COOKS

“Sharing means Caring.” Research proves now that sharing your time on some consistent level, with others for a good cause can and will improve your overall happiness and mental well-being. It turns out that Baby Boomers in particular give more total dollars to charities than any other generation. New studies have recently confirmed that there are great health benefits to giving back. Many surveys of volunteering adults, have found out that the overwhelming number of participants reported feeling mentally, emotionally and physically healthier after a volunteered experience. For your information 76% of volunteers who volunteered in the last twelve months said that volunteering has made them feel healthier; 94% of volunteers who volunteered in the last twelve months said that volunteering has greatly improved their mood and selfesteem; 78% of volunteers said that volunteering has significantly lowered their stress levels; 96% of volunteers reported that volunteering has wonderfully enriched their sense of purpose in life; 80% of volunteers said they feel like they have better control over their health; About a quarter of volunteers have reported that their volunteer work has helped them manage a chronic illness by keeping them active and taking their minds off of their own problems; Volunteers have a better personal scores than the non-volunteers on a nine well-established measures of emotional wellbeing including personal independence, capacity for rich interpersonal relationships and overall satisfaction with life.

For those of us who have spent time giving back to the community or helping further a cause we believe in, you might recognize many of the above findings to be correct. It doesn’t seem far-fetched to think that helping others can provide you with a sense of connection, pride, and perspective. But did you know that it can also help you live longer it can enable you to have a better sense of community by working closely with neighbors and friends and it helps to build a strong community bond and pride.

Analyzed data from published studies have found evidence that volunteers had a 20 percent lower risk of death than their peers who do not volunteer and further, its been found that volunteers even had lower levels of depression, increased life satisfaction and a greater enhanced well-being.

Every year about 510,000 men, men/or women die from suicide globally, which translates to one every minute…as it’s hidden in the shadows and shrouded in the stigma of being a male.

It’s impossible to talk about suicide without talking about poor mental health, with approximately 90% of people who die by suicide experiencing a mental health problem.

Mental health problems affects adults of all ages. Research tells us that women suffer higher rates of anxiety and depression. However, health outcomes when it comes to mental health weigh heavily against men because most men don’t handle mental health illness too well.

Women in general are more likely to talk about what’s going on and seek help for mental health problems, whereas men are good at bottling things up, soldiering on and toughing it out – even if they are in a pretty bad place. This is a major problem and the most significant health issues men face, as not taking action can lead them down a very dark path, with devastating results.

Tackling talking can be complicated for them, sensitive area and one that

Men are pretty good at talking about sport, work, the latest gadget, or the latest film but as men need to get better at talking about the significant stuff going on in men lives – things like losing a job, the breakdown of a relationship, a significant setback, or becoming a father for the first time. These things happen regularly and, for some, have the potential to derail men or just be more challenging than perhaps they imagined. A conversation at these times can help men to remain on top of things.

It isn’t easy to just talk, many men were raised in a world where men are basically supposed to be in control, always strong, never weak, and always winning. It’s just easier to say, “I’m good” when in reality you’re casually asked “How’s it going?”

Even though most men don’t want to burden their male friends with their struggles. It’s naive to think that a conversation will save every life but conversations do help men stay mentally healthy and we know there’s a close association with suicide and poor mental health. So it’s time to break the silence and recognize that the key to overcoming even the biggest problems is to start talking. We all have an individual responsibility to try and ensure we look out for the men in our lives and ensure they know its good and welcomed to talk and that no one will think any less of them.

Living with Panic Attacks

Have you ever been present when a person was having a panic attack? This information hopefully can help if you or for someone you might know have panic attacks.

A panic attack is a very sudden and frightening experience that can feel like you are having a heart attack, dying, or losing control. Many adults experience only 1 or 2 attacks in a lifetime, but others have recurrent attacks, which may be an indication of an underlying condition called panic disorder. A panic attack is an abrupt onset of intense fear for no apparent reason, accompanied by very real physical changes, such as a rapid and pounding heart rate, sweating, and rapid breathing. Steps can be taken to stop a panic attack, and to help prevent further attacks from happening.

Recognize the physical symptoms, during a panic attack, your body goes into a natural fight-or-flight response, just as if you were in a truly terrifying and dangerous situation, only no dangerous situation is actually occurring. Symptoms that are commonly experienced during a panic attack include: Chest pain or discomfort; dizziness or faintness;fear of dying; fear of losing control or impending doom; feeling of choking; feeling of detachment; feeling of unreality; nausea or upset stomach; numbness or tingling in the hands, feet, or face, palpitations, fast heart rate, or pounding heart; sweating, chills, or hot flashes, and trembling or shaking.

Try to control your breathing. Most panic attacks cause rapid and shallow breathing which fuels the attack, by controlling your breathing, it helps to become normal, helps blood pressure, sweating and feeling back in control. Take a deep breath.

Breathe in slowly and deeply, then exhale even more slowly.

To practice diaphragmatic breathing, sit in a chair with 1 hand on your chest and the other a little below your rib cage. Sit comfortably with bent knees, relaxed shoulders and neck.

Another method is the 5-2-5 method. Inhale with your diaphragm for 5 seconds. Hold your breath for 2 seconds. Then exhale for 5 more seconds. Repeat 5 times.

Take prescription medication. One of the most effective ways to stop a panic attack is by taking oral agents classed as anti-anxiety medications, prescribed by your physician. If you suffer from panic attacks or panic disorder, working with a cognitive behavioral therapist will help you learn relaxation strategies to take control of the panic when it starts.

Try to continue your current activity and daily routine to prevent the panic from consuming you. Continue talking, moving, and keep your thoughts focused. By doing so, you are sending messages to your brain, and your panic, that there is no danger, no alarm, and no reason to be in a fight-or-flight state.

Avoid running away, if you have a panic attack at a specific place, maybe a grocery store, then you may want to run away. By staying where you are, and taking control of your symptoms, you are taking steps to train your brain in recognizing the absence of real danger. If you run away, your brain begins to associate that place, and maybe all grocery stores, with danger, and may create feelings of panic each time you enter a grocery store.

Focus on other things. Learn ways to naturally focus your thoughts, and take control of the panic. Some examples: drinking something warm or cold, taking a short walk, singing, talking with a friend, watching TV, stretching exercises, doing a puzzle, rolling down the window if you are in a car, going outside for some fresh air, or reading.

Try to find something new that you can hear, other than the sounds of your heart beating.

By taking those few moments to review what your senses are experiencing, you have redirected the focus away from the panic, anxiety, or stress.

Distinguish between a stressful experience and a panic attack. Stressful experiences happen to everyone at one time or another. The body’s natural fight or flight instinct may be activated during a stressful or anxious situation, just as it is during a panic attack, but there is always a trigger, event, or experience that is directly tied to the reaction. Panic attacks are not tied to an event, are unpredictable, and the severity of an attack can be extreme and terrifying.

Use your senses to tackle the attack. Whether you experience a panic attack, an anxiety attack, try focusing on your senses, you can possibly slow it down.

Notice pleasant things in your immediate surroundings or close eyes and visualize flowers, favorite painting, favorite beach, or something to get relaxed.

Stop and listen to what is around you such as the birds, the wind or the rain, or even the hum of traffic on a nearby highway.

This is clearly not resolving the cause of the panic, anxiety, or stress, but concentrating on your senses is useful in addressing the unwanted physical reaction your body may be experiencing.

Talk to your doctor about your attacks. Panic attacks are commonly related to other underlying disorders, including some mental health conditions and some medical problems. Studies show that people that are treated for panic attacks and panic disorder early, have better overall outcomes with fewer complications. www.Yeswecannewspaper.com
