Answer: In the Gospels, Jesus speaks of those who have “ears to hear” at the end of a difficult saying or parable (e.g., Matthew 11:15; Mark 4:9, 23). Who is “he who has ears to hear”? Better yet, who is “he who has ears”? Ears are a feature shared by all of humanity—to not have ears would be an unnatural occurrence. Therefore, when Jesus addresses those who have ears, He refers to all who have been given His words—no matter their age, ethnicity, language, or status.

But there is a difference between having ears and having “ears to hear.”

Jesus’ parable of the sower and the seed contrasts types of hearers: those who let the Word of God pass straight through their ears and those who truly listen and seek understanding (Mark 4:13– 20). Some hear the Word, yet they do not allow it to take root because the seduction of worldly pleasures and comfort overcomes them. Others end up rejecting the Word because of persecution or trials. Others hear the Word and open themselves to understand and accept it so that it transforms them. Those who have “ears to hear” allow the Word to bear fruit to the glory of God. It is up to the hearer to decide whether to take the Word seriously and pursue understanding; only a few are willing—the rest have ears, but they do not have “ears to hear” (Matthew 7:13– 14, 24–27).

Whenever Jesus says, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear,” He is calling for people to pay careful heed.

It’s another way of saying, “Listen up! Pay close atten-

tion!” Speaking in parables was one way in which Jesus sought to gain the attention of the crowds —people love stories, and the parables depicted events and characters with which they could readily relate. But unless they were willing to tune out other distractions and come to Jesus to understand the meaning of His preaching, His words would be only empty stories. They needed more than ears, however keen they were; they needed ears to hear.

When asked by His disciples why He was speaking to the crowds in parables, Jesus refers to Isaiah 6, which speaks of people who have eyes and ears, yet who have hardened their hearts and chosen to ignore the Word of the Lord (Matthew 13:10–15; cf. Isaiah 6:8–10). Part of the judgment on those who refuse to believe is that they will eventually lose their opportunity to believe: “Whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them” (Matthew 13:12; cf. Romans 1:18–32).

A similar phrase is found in Revelation in each of the seven letters to the churches: “Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches” (Revelation 2:7, 11, 17, 29; 3:6, 13, 22). And in Revelation 13:9, immediately following a description of the Antichrist, we read, “Whoever has ears, let them hear.” The readers of Revelation are called upon to pay close attention and seek God’s wisdom concerning what’s

Who is “he who has ears”? The simple answer: all people who have been or are being given the words of God. Like the parables’ original audience, we must also “Listen up! Pay close attention!” Jesus’ simple request is that we use our God-given faculties (eyes to see, ears to hear) to tune in to His words (John 10:27 –28; Mark 4:24; Revelation 3:20). “For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open” (Mark 4:22). Seeking God’s truth takes energy and focus; it takes a willingness to be challenged and changed. While the way of God’s truth is not the most convenient or fun path to take, we can be assured that it is the best one (John 1:4; 10:9; 14:6). And so He bids us, “Come” (Matthew 11:28 –30).

Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat!

Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare. Give ear and come to me; listen, that you may live. There are two types of styes; 1.

Hordeolum is a blockage of one of the sweat glands found in the skin of the lid and base of the eyelashes, or one of the small sebaceous glands found at the base of the eyelashes. Sebaceous glands secrete sebum, a waxy, oily material.

2. chalazion is a blockage of a meibomian gland, which is a special oil gland (sebaceous) unique to the eyelids. These glands form a single row in each lid, with the body of the gland located inside the eyelid, and the opening located at the rim of the lid, posterior to the lashes.

Some experts believe that usually, most people with a sty develop it when some normal occurring and/or transient bacteria multiply in the eyelid.

Because these bacteria are not necessarily transferred from one person to another, some researchers consider a sty to be noncontagious. Others, however, feel that if another person touches the infected eye it's possible to transfer the infection person to person. The symptoms of a sty are foreign body sensation in the eye (particularly with blinking; eye pressure, and a painful red bump, though often they are painless. There may also be blurred vision if thick sebum or pus from within the sty spreads over the eye's surface. If chronic meibomian gland dysfunction is present, dry eye symptoms are common.

This is because the meibomian glands secrete an oil onto the surface of the eye to prevent the water layer of tears from evaporating too rapidly from the eye's surface between blinks. Signs of a sty include: presence of a lump or bump (like a pimple) on the edge of the eyelid; redness of the skin overlying the eyelid bump, and swelling and puffy appearance of the eyelid.

If the sty is draining material from the gland's opening, there may be thick discharge or crusty material accumulating on the lids and lashes. Pus may ooze out through a break in the skin.

Watery tears can also be produced in response to irritation and pain. Stys can be external, meaning the blocked gland protrudes outward and appears as a visible swelling under the skin, or interior.

Styes occur when a gland in or on the eyelid becomes plugged or blocked. The most common risk factor is sluggish outflow of the sebum from the meibomian glands, which is commonly seen in a chronic inflammatory condition called meibomian gland dysfunction. Meibomian gland dysfunction is frequently associated with acne rosacea on the cheeks and nose but can also be seen alone.

Other risks include obstruction of the gland's opening by scar tissue following infections, burns, or trauma. Foreign substances such as makeup and dust can also clog the gland's opening if not properly washed away.

Eye specialists, including optometrists and ophthalmologists, are called upon to treat more advanced cases such as styes that appear infected or those that recur. The most conservative treatment is application of frequent warm (not too hot) compresses alone. This can be accomplished with a wet warm washcloth, microwaveable eye masks (sold at drugstores), or a plug-in electric heating pad. Several minutes at a time (for example, 15 minutes). will improve the odds that the sty or chalazion will clear on its own. Be sure to check the temperature of the compress against another part of your skin, such as the back of your hand, to ensure the compress does not burn your eye or face.

An ophthalmologist can inject a steroid into the lesion, often resulting in a speedier resolution. However, this carries a small risk of bleeding/bruising, depigmentation/thinning of the skin, scar, pain, and in very rare cases, loss of vision.

Extracts of the South American stevia plant, called steviol glycosides, are up to 300 times sweeter than sugar and have little aftertaste, zero calories, and no effect on blood sugar. At the time of the FDA ban, supporters of stevia argued without success that stevia, with its long history of food use, should qualify as having GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status in the same manner as coffee, tea, sugar, fruit, etc.

A history of safe use is one condition that must be met to qualify for GRAS, and this was actually acknowledged in the FDA’s Import Alert for stevia! The FDA not only banned a safe and natural sweetener in stevia, but one that appears to provide health benefits as well, most notably for regulating blood sugar and blood pressure.

Stevia has proven to be a safe alternative to sugar for many years, however the FDA has not always agreed.

The FDA’s delay of stevia’s safety approval has caused many Americans to miss out on its vast benefits such as lowering blood pressure, fighting cavities and more!

In 2008, after a rigorous review of the scientific evidence, the FDA granted stevia sweeteners GRAS status.

While stevia has been documented to have medical purposes as an antimicrobial, anti-diarrheal, anti-tumor, diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and what is called immunomodulatory actions, the scientific evidence is strongest, and its use is most promising for two indications: (1) high blood sugar/insulin resistance and (2) high blood pressure.

Stevia May Help Control Blood Sugar and Insulin Levels. Extracts from stevia leaves have been used for centuries as a medicinal herb in the traditional treatment of diabetes in South America.

Today, scientific evidence on stevia supports its historic precedent in the regulation of blood sugar and insulin.

When compared to sugar, stevia

consumption before meals results in far lower after-meal glucose and insulin levels. Even when compared to aspartame, stevia resulted in lower post-prandial insulin levels. The comparison with aspartame is more impressive because the change in glucose and insulin levels cannot be due to a difference in calories, as with sugar. A key finding from this study was that participants eating stevia felt satisfied with fewer calories and did not eat more food throughout the day to compensate.

Stevia is not just a safe sugar substitute, but a natural insulin sensitizer that may help maintain normal sugar and insulin levels in diabetics and nondiabetics alike.

Since stevia extract also decreases oxidized LDL cholesterol and triglycerides and lowers high blood pressure all metabolic risk factors it has great potential for the treatment of metabolic syndrome.

A double-blind, placebo-controlled study demonstrated that oral stevioside taken at doses of 250 mg, three times a day for one year resulted in significant, lasting decreases in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in patients with mild to moderate hypertension.

Though the effect of stevioside was not better than drugs, it appears comparable and nearly everyone taking stevioside had significant lowering of blood pressure. As in the case of blood sugar, stevioside lowers elevated blood pressure, but not normal blood pressure.

We wanted the community to know how she helped and aided thousands of Veterans and people. Mary fulfilled her purpose and not only love by words only, but by her Heart and Actions!

Written By Lillian Baltes , Mary’s Sister Our sweet and loving Mary Kelly-Mohr, Founder and Executive Director of Heroes Warehouse, passed away on May 12th after a valiant and courageous battle fighting cancer. Mary was born August 31, 1956 in Norfolk Virginia, the child of a Navy family. Her mother was Yolanda Kochis and father was Peter Kochis, who was a Commander in the Navy. She was the second oldest girl in a family of 8 children. She had 3 sisters and 4 brothers.

families in Southern California. With a small group of volunteers (no one is paid), Mary has been instrumental in creating and successfully operating a much appreciated and necessary community service.

Mary’s love of Veterans and people in general, knew no bounds as Mary always placed others above her own needs. Her life was marked by her unparalleled generosity. According to her husband and partner of 40 years Her childhood was that of a military family living in Norfolk, Hawaii, and Richard Mohr, Mary was the most loving, giving person he ever San Diego. Mary later moved with her family to West Covina where she knew. Her positive, forward thinking spirit was contagious. graduated from Bishop Amat Memorial High School, a Catholic school in La Puente, California. Upon graduation, Mary worked a variety of corporate When not working 70+ hours per week dedicated to Heroes jobs in administration, bookkeeping and operations.

She retired from the corporate world at the age of 43 but continued working with her husband Richard at their family owned business, RGM Dental.

Mary always had a love of country and the military often volunteering her services in the community.

Warehouse, Mary enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, husband, family and friends. She relished taking several vacations every year to Moonlight Beach, Encinitas. She loved concerts, family dinners, friend’s BBQ’s, travel especially (Hawaii) and shopping.

It’s with a heavy heart I write this post. We lost our angel on earth.

My beautiful mother passed away. My emotions are all over the place so bear with me.

You were the most kind, sweet, warm hearted woman I’ve ever known. Everyone that ever met you felt instantly drawn to you cause your heart was so big. You were our family’s rock. I really can’t imagine life without you and don’t think I ever will.

Your passion in life was to always help others. All you ever wanted to do was take away other people’s pain. You went through so many ventures in life but each one was about helping those in need, and never about yourself. So many hearts are going to be hurting for along time now that you’re gone.

I can’t ever repay you for everything you did for me and my kids.

You helped me out whenever I was down and out no matter what the circumstances. When I struggled being a single father you always made sure my kinds had everything they needed. You taught me so much love and how to be a good father.

I’m so sorry for all the pain I caused you. I was not an easy kid especially in my teens. I’m sorry all those nights you stayed up worrying about me. I’m sorry for all those times I snapped at you. I’m so sorry for that one time I called you at 3:30 in the morning and told you I’m in a Mexican jail then 5 minutes later yelled “April fool’s “and hung up on you…. Ok, that I’m not sorry about, I even laughed right now as I was typing it….

I had to do 2 of the hardest things ever this week. First, I had to tell my brother Pete when I picked him up from the airport on Mother’s Day this would be the last time, he sees his mother, then 2 days later I had to watch my father hold my mom as she took her last breath.

Now, this post is about my mom but it wouldn’t be right if I didn’t talk about my dad. This man is a man every man should want to be. He taught me to be a great father, but I could never fill the shoes of being a husband like him. His strength and love for my mother kept her alive and fighting. He stood by her side through all her decisions no matter what they were. So many tough days and nights with love and to ease her pain. Mom, you the best man ever to be your husband and I will do everything in my power to take care of him for you. He will never stop loving you. I will never stop loving you.

Everyone who you touched will never stop loving you. I love you to the moon and back. Your son, Matt Mary, my dear friend. In her honor, I will take a line from the Star-Spangled Banner: “Oh say can you see” the love, dedication and commitment Mary had for our veterans and our country. Thousands of veterans and their families were given the means to make their houses become homes thanks to her endlessly giving heart. She didn’t just dream the dream, she followed through consistently to create lasting realities for IE veterans. I will always honor and miss her and will do my best to keep her legacy going. I pray that she rests in peace, the result of a job so very well done.

What Color Blindness Looks Like

By Contributor Writer: People who are color-blind can’t appreciate the rainbow of hues that so many of us take for granted. But not being able to see all colors properly goes beyond mere aesthetics. It can make simple everyday tasks a challenge — from traveling (say, differentiating the colors in a traffic light or reading a subway map) to eating (being able to tell if a banana you’re about to peel is ripe) to getting dressed (color-coordinating can be a nightmare).

Color blindness is often misunderstood. One common misconception is that people who are color-blind live in a world devoid of color. “In fact, the vast majority of people who have color blindness can see colors, but certain colors — red and green, in particular — appear washed out and muddy,” says ophthalmologist Jane Edmond, director of the Mitchel & Shannon Wong Eye Institute and a professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at Dell Medical School, at the University of Texas at Austin. “This can make distinguishing between certain colors a challenge.”

In fact, “color deficiency” is a more accurate way to describe the condition.

Color blindness can range from mild (some people only have trouble distinguishing colors in dim light, for example) to more severe, but the degree of severity doesn’t change and usually doesn’t affect the sharpness of vision. Trouble seeing the difference between red and green (or red-green color blindness) is the most common form of the condition. Both colors may take on a kind of brownish murky-greenish tone, which can make for some confusion. “One of my patients, who is red-green color deficient, would pick wild strawberries as a young child,” He would always come back with a basket of leaves, because he had a hard time distinguishing between red and green.”

An inability to distinguish between blue and yellow is much less common. Being completely color-blind (read: seeing things in black, white or shades of gray) is a severe form of the condition, called achromatopsia. It’s extremely rare and accompanied by bad overall vision.

The retina is covered with two types of light-sensitive photoreceptors, called rods and cones. Rods detect light and dark. Cones are responsible for color vision. There are three types of cones: One perceives longer (or red) wavelengths, another medium (green) wavelengths, and another short (or blue) wavelengths. Together, these cones allow us to see an entire spectrum of colors. If just one type of cone is faulty, the eye may have trouble seeing certain hues. Reasons for that include: Genetics. In most cases, people are born color-blind — men far more frequently, because the X chromosome, passed on from mother to son, carries the genetic information for color vision. (According to the American Optometric Association, nearly 8 percent of males and 0.5 percent of females are born with color deficiency.) Males, who have an X chromosome and a Y chromosome (XY), only need an abnormal X chromosome to become color-blind. A color-blind woman has two abnormal X chromosomes (XX), one each from her mother and father.

Age. Color vision can also worsen with age. This is known as acquired color blindness. Cataracts, in particular, can throw things out of whack. “As we age, our lens can turn cloudy, which decreases the amount of light getting to the retina,” explains Edmond. “Over time, the aging lens can turn a yellow or brown color, which leads to altered color perception — sort of like looking through glasses with yellow- or brown-tinted lenses.”

Injury or disease. Damage to the optic nerve, or to parts of the brain that process color, or diseases such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s and stroke can cause color blindness. Unlike congenital color blindness, these types of color vision problems affect men and women equally, and one eye may be affected more than the other.

In the United States of America, we have many positive things to learn from one another. But, sadly, not everyone thinks that way. Racism is still a major issue in our country.

This can help if you want to learn more about what racism is; if you want practical tips on identifying racism and how to handle it; if you or someone you know is experiencing racism.

Racism is discrimination, pre-judgements or hostile behaviors directed at another person on the basis of their race, ethnicity or cultural background. Racism can come in many different forms, from harsh comments to offensive actions. In more extreme cases, racism occurs in public spaces and comes from strangers, and can escalate to violent hate crimes.

Not all racism is public and obvious Subtle or ‘casual’ racism can also appear in the form of a ‘microaggression’.

This is an intentional or unintentional offensive message that targets a person based entirely on their being a member of a minority group. Any form of racism is unacceptable, even a comment or an action that is subtle or occurs in a casual environment. It’s not on.

Here are some examples of microaggressions: intentionally choosing not to sit next to a person because you feel uncomfortable about the color of their skin; telling a person of a different race who was born and raised in Australia that they speak ‘good English’; asking a person born in America what their nationality is or 'where they come from', instead of asking about their cultural background; making fun of someone’s background, even if it's disguised as a joke.

Standing up to racism isn’t easy, but it’s the right thing to do. Whether you're in school, university or the workplace, challenging accusations, assumptions and stereotypes is a good way of letting people know it’s not okay to be racist. Remember, sometimes people can unintentionally make comments that appear racist. Standing up to these comments can be a great way for people to learn about the negative impact they’re having.

You need to feel comfortable, safe and calm. When you stand up for yourself or others, it's a good idea to approach the

situation as calmly as you can, and to make sure that you feel safe first. Being willing to have conversations about racism creates room for discussion and change, whereas going straight into a screaming match is usually counterproductive.

Confront someone face-to-face If they say something insensitive, you may feel comfortable confronting them about it in private or in a group setting. Ask why they feel the way they do, and provide a different perspective.

Show empathy for the group they’re targeting. This may also help the person to understand that the victims are people, too. Phone or email the person. Let them know that what they're saying or doing is not okay, and give them examples of why it's not okay. Record the situation and give it to the authorities, such as the police. You may want to do this if you witness racist behavior in public, but make sure you put your safety first.

If you want to speak out, but are worried about creating a fuss. It can be incredibly daunting to speak out about racism, especially in a situation where you don’t want to create trouble. You need to feel comfortable about voicing your concerns in a way that suits you. Make sure that you put your safety first, remain calm, and evaluate your own beliefs and values before stepping in to help others.

There are other ways to stand up to racism. You can write a social media post about racism that you've witnessed or experienced: This helps get the message out there that racism still exists, and allows for some open conversation. Discuss it with family and friends: This is a great way to get things off your chest, and allows you to understand what you're comfortable with.

Your loved ones can also provide support to let you know that you're not alone.
