The 38th Annual Pomona Mayor’s Prayer’s Breakfast and Community The Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast was a complete success! The City of Pomona would like to thank Pastor Amos Young, Sr, Host and Coordinator for his continued dedication in keeping the Mayor’s Prayers Breakfast and Community Strength Award alive and well! The breakfast was held on May 24, 2018 at the Double Tree in the City of Pomona. The support and interest were obvious as there were Community Leaders, Clergymen, Dignitaries, Business owners, Service Organizations and residents from Pomona in attended. This was a special day for Mayor Tim Sandoval and the city of Pomona. It was a day of prayer for the growth and welfare for the city of Pomona. The guest Speakers were Pastor Steve Lowry, Sr., he is the Senior Pastor for the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, Pomona and Pastor Nathan Neighbour, Senior Pastor of the Mosaic, Pomona. Their messages to the Mayor Sandoval and residents of Pomona were “profound and intense” which left the audience moved! As it was quoted from Pastor Lowry’s message “Don’t Look Back, move Forward” As in a Foot Race, don’t look back it will slow you down!” Also, California State Treasurer, John Chiang gave encouraging words to the residents of Pomona and urged them to keep having open conversations, adult conversations so that Pomona will continue to move forward!

Victory Outreach is a ministry that has reached out to the community and aided people from all walks of life. All enjoyed the breakfast and the opportunity to meet and greet.

There was a surprised announcement also made at the event by Mr. Ray Adamyk. He informed the guest that he was now the proud owner of the old YMCA Boys Club building on Garey Blvd. in Pomona. He purchased the building and is totally renovating it and when completed it will be a place for the youth of Pomona to come and have Also, present was Pastor Robert and Pastor Vernonia Garcia from Victory Outreach, all kinds of activities and fun. What an announcement! our youth certainly need a place to go to and feel safe. Elizabeth M. Rhone, First Lady, of Mt. Sinai COGIC, Pomona Pomona. rendered a powerful prayer for the mayor and for the city of Pomona.

Ethel Martin-Miller HAPPY FATHER’S DAY When thinking about what I could write for this month, my seven brothers came to mind. My parents had fourteen children, ten boys and four girls. In those days people had a lot of children. Unfortunately, four of my siblings died as infants.

All of us grew up very close, we were very close, so much so that most of my brothers always wanted to protect the girls. Most of them treated us like they were our fathers. When I wanted to purchase a sport car, a couple of them said No, that’s to dangerous. When I wanted to share an apartment with a girlfriend, one of them said No, too much is happening out there. They were adamant alone with our mother, the girl best not come up with any babies. As I grew older I realized that I had the best brothers in the world. I felt totally safe growing up and having so many brothers around me. When I needed all I had to do was pick up the telephone and call, they were there. So, I want to wish my only living brother, Samuel Baber a Happy Father’s Day. He turned 80 years old last month and his children gave him a Grand Birthday Party. His wife, my dear sister-in-love, Connie Baber is precious to me.

They have been married for over 60 years. Happy Father Day to the Men in my Life.

What's The Difference Between A Duchess & A

Princess?

The absolute biggest news to come out of Windsor Castle is the meeting of two different worlds. The beautiful marriage of Prince Harry to American Meghan Markle has brought many to wonder what is the difference between a duchess and a princess? Just because Meghan Markle married Prince Harry who is a prince she would automatically become a princess.

Princesses are typically the "daughters or granddaughters of a king or queen," according to Live Science. A woman possessing no royal blood or rank is known as a commoner (like Meghan Markle, and formerly Kate Middleton). A commoner could potentially earn the title of "duchess" by marrying a prince. It is a title reserved for a wife or widow of a duke (or, in the current era, a woman who holds the rank of duke in her own right). Basically, duchess is the feminization of duke.

Dukes and duchesses are usually referred to as "Your Grace," rather than "My Lord" or "My Lady," which is said to their royal peers. For most of his life, Prince William was referred to only as HRH Prince William of Wales. But as soon as he and Kate Middleton wed, he was bestowed the title of Duke of Cambridge (Kate received the complementary title of Duchess of Cambridge). As Prince William is second-in-line to the British Royal Throne, he will presumably one day in the future gain the title of King William. Kate will become Queen Consort, a title of which she is second-in -line for, behind Prince Phillip's wife Camilla Parker-Bowles.

So, where does that leave Meghan Markle?

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been given the titles of Duchess and Duke of Sussex at the time of their marriage. As Meghan Markle was not born into the royal family, she will never technically be a princess.

Where this gets even more confusing is the fact that Prince William and Prince Harry's late mother is commonly known as Princess Diana. In actuality, Diana Spencer was never given the title of princess. Baronage explains that she was actually known as Diana, Princess of Wales upon her marriage to Prince Charles of Wales, or Her Royal Highness the Princess Of Wales. If she were a true, by-the-books princess, the title would precede her first name. Lady Diana, too, was a commoner before her marriage to Prince Charles. Interestingly, Diana did in fact have British Aristocratic blood. The Times reported four of her ancestors engaged in affairs with Charles II during the 1600s. Talk about a tangled family tree!

If you are still feeling confused, it boils down to this: Meghan Markle has the title of Duchess and will not be a princess after her marriage to Prince Harry her title given to her is a Duchess.

You can only be an official princess through blood, like Princess Charlotte.

That being said, Markle Meghan being an American can most certainly be a princess in your heart and in Prince Harry’s heart. Their eyes told the story of their Love for each other.

By Contributor Writer An earthquake is what happens when two blocks of the earth suddenly slip past one another. The surface where they slip is called the fault or fault plane. The location below the earth’s surface where the earthquake starts is called the hypocenter, and the location directly above it on the surface of the earth is called the epicenter.

Sometimes an earthquake has foreshocks. These are smaller earthquakes that happen in the same place as the larger earthquake that follows. Scientists can’t tell that an earthquake is a foreshock until the larger earthquake happens.

The largest, main earthquake is called the mainshock. Mainshocks always have aftershocks that follow. These are smaller earthquakes that occur afterwards in the same place as the mainshock. Depending on the size of the mainshock, aftershocks can continue for weeks, months, and even years after the mainshock!

What causes earthquakes and where do they happen? The earth has 5

QUAKE four major layers: the inner core, outer core, mantle and crust. (figure 2) The crust and the top of the mantle make up a thin skin on the surface of our planet.

But this skin is not all in one piece – it is made up of many pieces like a puzzle covering the surface of the earth. (figure 3) Not only that, but these puzzle pieces keep slowly moving around, sliding past one another and bumping into each other.

We call these puzzle pieces tectonic plates, and the edges of the plates are called the plate boundaries. The plate boundaries are made up of many faults, and most of the earthquakes around the world occur on these faults. Since the edges of the plates are rough, they get stuck while the rest of the plate keeps moving. Finally, when the plate has moved far enough, the edges unstick on one of the faults and there is an earthquake.

Why does the earth shake when there is an earthquake? While the edges of faults are stuck together, and the rest of the block is moving, the energy that would normally cause the blocks to slide past one another is being stored up. When the force of the moving blocks finally overcomes the friction of the jagged edges of the fault and it unsticks, all that stored up energy is released. The energy radiates outward from the fault in all directions in the form of seismic waves like ripples on a pond. The seismic waves shake the earth as they move through it, and when the waves reach the earth’s surface, they shake the ground and anything on it, like our houses and us! (see P&S Wave inset) Earthquakes are recorded by instruments called seismographs. The recording they make is called a seismogram. (figure 4) The seismograph has a base that sets firmly in the ground, and a heavy weight that hangs free. When an earthquake causes the ground to shake, the base of the seismograph shakes too, but the hanging weight does not. Instead the spring or string that

it is hanging from absorbs all the movement. The difference in position between the shaking part of the seismograph and the motionless part is what is recorded.

The size of an earthquake depends on the size of the fault and the amount of slip on the fault, but that’s not something scientists can simply measure with a measuring tape since faults are many kilometers deep beneath the earth’s surface. So how do they measure an earthquake?

They use the seismogram recordings made on the seismographs at the surface of the earth to determine how large the earthquake was (figure 5). A short wiggly line that doesn’t wiggle very much means a small earthquake, and a long wiggly line that wiggles a lot means a large earthquake. The length of the wiggle depends on the size of the fault, and the size of the wiggle depends on the amount of slip.

The size of the earthquake is called its magnitude. There is one magnitude for each earthquake. Scientists also talk about the intensity of shaking from an

earthquake, and this varies depending on where you are during the earthquake.

Can scientists predict earthquakes? No, and it is unlikely they will ever be able to predict them. Scientists have tried many different ways of predicting earthquakes, but none have been successful. On any particular fault, scientists know there will be another earthquake sometime in the future, but they have no way of telling when it will happen.

Alleviate sore muscles massage the affected area with little bit of the cream to alleviate the soreness. After massaging the muscles cover them with dry and slightly warm towel or cloth. Lift the leg up until you feel better.

Repeat the method 3 times daily.

Tennis elbow – The 2 compounds of the Vicks VapoRub, camphor and menthol, will eliminate the pain caused by tennis elbow. Apply the cream until you feel better and the pain is gone.

Cracked heels – Apply little bit of Vicks VapoRub on the cracked skin on the feet or heels and put socks on. Sleep with the socks on and wash the feet with some warm water the next morning. The skin will be softened and then you can exfoliate it with pumice stone.

Stretch marks – You can reduce the visibility of the stretch marks by applying some Vicks VapoRub on the skin.

Toenail and fingernail fungus apply the cream on the affected area 2 times every day. After applying the cream put socks on. You also need to trim the nails as much as you can until the infection is completely removed.

Stop the cat’s scratching – In order to stop your cat from scratching, apply little bit of the cream on the doors, walls and windows.

Eliminate eczema – Use this cream to reduce the itchiness and inflammation of eczema.

Symptoms of cough and congestion – Rub little bit of the ointment on the chest and the throat to relieve

the congestion and cough.

Stop your pet’s peeing place open Vicks VapoRub bottle in the areas of the house where your pet usually pees. Speed up the healing process of cuts and even splinters in order to prevent infections and to speed up the process of healing apply some of the ointment on the cut or splinter.

Athlete’s feet for treatment of Athlete’s feet apply the cream 2 times a day.

Racehorses – A lot of professional horse racers apply the cream under the horse`s nostrils to keep them focused on the race and not being distracted by the odor of the other horses especially the female horses.

Remove warts – Rub some of the cream on the wart 2 times a day covering it with gauze. In just couple of days, you will feel much better. Repeat the method for 2 weeks or until the wart is completely gone.

Eliminate ear pain – Put some of the Vicks VapoRub on a little piece of cotton and place the cotton in the ear. Immediately you will feel better. Also, you can warm up 1 garlic clove for 10 seconds using the microwave and put little bit of ointment on the garlic clove and place it in the painful ear. Always consult your personal physician before trying any of the above methods.

DOG’S SLEEPING HABITS TELL YOU A LOT ABOUT THEIR PERSONALITY AND HEALTH

It may seem like your dog is sleeping too much, but their lifestyle, amount of exercise, and what breed they are may affect the amount of sleep they need. Even the age of the dog impacts the amount of sleep they require.

Age and Size Puppies sleep excessively. They run around using every bit of energy and then suddenly crash and sleep, almost mid step at times. It is very much like dealing with a human child who has bursts of exuberant energy and plays hard until they drop from exhaustion. Conversely, older dogs sleep more than younger ones. As dogs age, they slow down. The size of your dog can be a factor as well. Larger dogs tend to sleep more than smaller dogs.

Sleeping Positions, pay attention to the position your dog sleeps in most frequently. Your dog’s favorite sleeping position might change based on where he’s snoozing, who he’s sleeping near, or if he’s feeling a certain way. Injuries or soreness can also cause a dog’s sleeping position to change, so if you notice anything unusual in your pup’s sleeping position, keep an eye out for signs of pain. Below are some common sleeping positions and what they mean.

On The Side, a dog that sleeps on his side has to feel pretty safe and comfortable, as it leaves the vital or-

gans exposed. Dogs that favor this position tend to be pretty easy-going and relaxed, though they may switch to a different position if they are sleeping somewhere new or around someone they aren’t familiar with. This position also leaves their limbs free to move during sleep, so you may see more twitching and leg kicks from a dog lying on his side.

Curled Up, a very common position dogs take when sleeping is to curl up in a ball, nose-to-tail. It’s a common position for animals to take in the wild, too, as it protects the vital organs, helps conserve warmth, and makes it easy to get up quickly. This position restricts movement during sleep, so you may see less twitching from a dog that snoozes in a ball. You might think that a dog that sleeps in this position would be uncomfortable in his surroundings, , it’s not necessarily true. It’s a common position in fall and winter months when the weather is cool, or it may just simply feel better for a particular dog to sleep in that position.

Sprawled Out On The Tummy, this is sometimes called the “Superman” position. It allows for a dog to pop up and be on his feet right away. Dogs that sleep in this position don’t want to miss a chance to be in the action, even while they’re napping. It’s the position of choice for high-energy pups or pups who get sleepy during play and just want to plop down where they’re standing.

On The Back, Paws Up In The Air, in the same way curling in a ball conserves heat, sleeping with an exposed belly helps a dog cool off. Since the fur is thinner around the belly and the paws hold the sweat glands, exposing these areas is a great way to beat the heat. It’s also a position that indicates a dog is very comfortable., Back-To-Back Or Snuggled Up, you may catch your dog sleeping back-to-back with your other pets or snuggling up to you, and it means the same thing. Your dog is bonding and showing that he wants to get close to you. A dog sleeping this way feels very loving and affectionate, and he’s completely comfortable with whoever he’s napping with.

Circling And Digging, it’s a normal behavior for dogs to circle their sleeping area or even dig a bit before lying down for sleep. This is behavior that comes from dogs’ wolf ancestors who would often trample down grass, leaves, or snow to get comfortable. A dog might doze off during the day if he’s bored or just getting a rest. This is not a very restful sleep. and your dog may just be waiting for something more interesting to come along.

Dogs tend to move a bit during REM sleep when they are most restful. They could very well be acting out their dreams, but they are getting a nice, deep sleep.

Twitching, tail wagging, leg kicks, and occasional barks or grunts are common. A less common reason for twitching during sleep is if a dog is cold. The twitches are the body’s way of warming up. If your dog is cold, get a blanket or move him to a warmer sleeping place.

Dogs sleep a lot more than people do. On average, dogs need about 12 to 14 hours of sleep a day. Big dogs tend to take longer naps than smaller dogs, and puppies need about 18 to 19 hours of sleep a day, usually waking up for an hour after every few hours of sleep. Take notice of your dog’s normal sleeping habits.

If you notice a change in how long your dog sleeps, it could mean a lot of things from a dietary change to a thyroid problem. If your dog is spending too much time napping, it could be time for a vet visit.

LET’S MAKE SOME PLAYDOUGH

Contributor Writer Do you love play dough? Who doesn't, right? We can still remember the first thing we ever made with play dough.

Can you guess what it was? If you guessed a snake, you're correct!

The invention of play dough was actually a fortunate accident. Way back in the 1930s, Noah McVicker created a substance that looked like putty out of flour, water, salt, boric acid and mineral oil. His family's soap company — Kutol Products — in Cincinnati, Ohio, marketed his creation as wallpaper cleaner!

McVicker's special putty -like substance was an excellent wallpaper cleaner, because it didn't contain any toxic chemicals, could be reused and would not stain the wallpaper. Eventually, teachers learned that the wallpaper cleaner could be used as a modeling compound to make art and craft projects at school.

It wasn't until after World War II that Noah McVicker's nephew, Joseph McVicker, joined the company and learned that their wallpaper cleaner was being used for arts and crafts in schools.

Joseph thought it would be a good idea to give the product a new name — PlayDoh — and market it to schools, teachers and department stores.

The new product was an immediate success. In 1956, the McVicker’s start-

ed the Rainbow Crafts Company to make and sell Play-Doh. Macy's in New York and Marshall Field's in Chicago began selling the product. The new company also began to advertise the product on popular children's television shows, such as Captain Kangaroo. Within one year, its sales had already reached almost $3 million!

Over time, the exact ingredients in Play-Doh have changed. As technology has improved, so has Play-Doh. Although the exact recipe is a secret, PlayDoh remains a popular for art and craft projects, because it is still nontoxic, easy to use and simple to clean up.

Today, Play-Doh is owned by a company named Hasbro that continues to make and sell the product through its Playskool line. In 2003, the Toy Industry Association added Play-Doh to its “Century of Toys List," which contains the 100 most memorable and creative toys of the last 100 years.

Play-Doh comes in a variety of bright and bold colors. There are also a series of related products and toys that make use of Play-Doh. Since its “invention," over 700 million pounds of Play-Doh have been sold around the world! Now you can make as much PlayDoh as you desire for your child.

Play-Doh Recipe: 1 tablespoon vegetable oil; 1/2 cup salt; 1 tablespoon cream of tartar; Food coloring; 1cup flour.

In a saucepan combine water, oil, salt, cream of tartar, and food coloring in a saucepan and heat until warm.

Remove from heat and add flour.

Stir, then knead until smooth. The cream of tartar makes this dough last 6 months or longer, so resist the temptation to omit this ingredient if you don't have it on hand.

Store this dough in an airtight container or a Ziploc freezer.
