Ethel Martin-Miller

I say “Love It or Leave It” I was born in the United States of America. I have enjoyed growing up in the United States! I attended Grammar School, Elementary School, High School and a year of College. I have been blessed to own homes, have a wonderful marriage, have children and thank God I have had the privilege of worshipping at my choice of church. I have been living here all of my life and I love my country, it's all I know! I have heard over the years many people saying so much about how they can’t stand America, burning the flag and not wanting to salute it. all negative words about my country. I’ve had to deal with the ugly here in America, I too have my stories of what I experienced here, but yet I want to live here. My statement to the talkers and haters is “Love It or Leave It.” “Why don’t they just pack up their things and go live where they think it is better. Here’s a suggestion to the talkers and haters, Prayer! Pray for our country! So, for me, there is no other country I could or would choose to live the rest of my life. I will continue to pray for The Good, The Bad and The Ugly here in The United States of America.

THE WORD

By Catherine Thomas and Ellen Clark What does it take to connect with the children contemplating suicide? How can we reach scared, lonely, bullied and depressed children to let them know that God loves them and will be with them wherever they go? How can we recognize when someone is asking for help? These are important questions to ask ourselves and our children. Within weeks of school starting, this year, there were 4 student suicides in the Inland Valley, one of them was an elementary school student. That was disturbing enough; yet again, last week, someone I knew personally took his life. It hurts to know he did not trust anyone enough to call someone or if his calls went unanswered; we just don’t know. The reality is that it hurts so many family members, friends, co-worker and the community. It hurts to the core of our souls. National Suicide Prevention week started Sunday, September 9th through 15th. Just 5 days later, on September 20 th, a young man was found on the grounds of Pomona High School, of an apparent suicide. On occasion, I had dropped-off my grandson at his home when they were in high school. And I would ask of his well-being when we would pass by his childhood home. After high school, the young man joined the military and I didn’t hear anything of him until he returned home when his mother passed away. And then, the dreadful news came that Thursday afternoon that this sweet person had died. I pray for his family, classmates and anyone who may have had the pleasure of knowing this mildmannered young man, tall, slender and handsome, with a smile that would light up a room. The big question here is, how do we as parents, teachers and community connect with children contemplating suicide? I am not sure of all the answers. But, we all should beware of the very serious issue of teen suicide. The one thing we as parents can do is to educate ourselves on the issue and know where help/resources are available. Moreover, we must be aware of our children’s behavior, mood swings, attitude and any signs and signals that might indicate thoughts of suicide. Above all, it is vital that we as parents teach and demonstrate love towards our children and provide them with a solid foundation about the truths of God’s Word and life in the real world. At a very early age, they should be taught to have faith in God, to have self -confidence, self-worth, self-respect and value human life, including their own. We must teach them that God loves them, that He created them with a purpose and plan, that they are important and that their lives matter. Remind them that Jesus was tempted with suicide (Matthew 4:8-11). And that Jesus resisted the tempter, Satan, with the word of God, by telling the devil, “away with you, Satan!” (Paraphrased: devil get away from me with your temptations). It is very difficult for some children, teenagers, and even adults to withstand certain pressures, temptations, burdens/disappointments, heartaches, hardships and trials encountered in life. So, we must remind them of the words Jesus spoke to His disciples, “In the world you will have tribulations, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33) Therefore, we all must learn how to lean and depend on God’s Word when life gets very dark and difficult. We must, therefore, teach our children to put their trust in God, for He will carry them through any, and all of life’s difficulties. Let them know that they can reach-out to you at any time, and that nothing is so bad that another day won’t hurt. And then, turn that “another day” into another day and another day.

Most countries require that your passport be valid for six months after your return date. The State Department recommends that you renew your passport no less than nine months before it’s set to expire. Allow up to six weeks for the passport application to be processed. The State Department’s country information provides important facts about your destination, such as whether you need a visa and where to get it, as well as other important details on crime, special circumstances, medical information and more. If you plan to rent a car or drive at your destination, find out whether an International Driver’s License is required or if your U.S. license will suffice. Make a photocopy of the information page of your passport and the visa pages for your destinations. Pack them separately from your passport. Find out whether the U.S. government has issued a travel warning, for countries where long-term issues create a risky environment for travelers. Many travel insurance policies will not cover travel to countries that are under travel warnings. Go to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website to find out health information and vaccination requirements for your destination. For maximum protection, you should get any required shots six weeks before departure. If you’re traveling to a country where disease is rampant, consult a travel medicine professional. The CDC website also is a good source of information on the health risks of consuming the water and food, nonprescription items to pack and other health tips. Be sure to check the “Confiscation of Prescription Drugs and Other Medicine” on the U.S. Department of State’s country information page to learn which prescription drugs are illegal in your destination country. Photocopy your prescriptions, packed separately from your medicine. Always pack your medicine, in its pre5

scription bottles, in your carry-on bag. If syringes, have a letter from your doctor. Always declare the syringes before you go through security. Pack more than enough medicine to last your trip, as it may be difficult to get your prescription filled abroad. If you are traveling outside industrial countries or to remote areas, register online with the U.S. Department of State, and enter your itinerary. In case of an emergency, they will know about your presence in the country and where to contact you. specify that third parties, your family and friends can contact the Department of State to locate you if necessary. Registration is free. Choose one or two credit cards to take with you, and call the issuers shortly before you leave to inform them of which countries you will be visiting. Otherwise, your credit card could be denied or international activity suspicion. Traveler’s checks are no longer universally accepted, and you may have trouble using them in many countries, especially the less developed ones. Take bank cards to withdraw money from ATMs, which can be found in even the most exotic destinations. Write down your credit card numbers, but don’t keep the list in your wallet. Know how to contact your company from abroad. Toll-free numbers do not work from outside the U.S., but credit card companies will accept collect calls at a designated number. It is likely that your health insurance won’t cover you while you’re traveling abroad. Depending on where you’re going, consider buying medical evacuation and emergency medical insurance. Other than the necessary electronics, don’t bring valuables with you like jewelry. Use closed baggage tags to label each bag. Put your name, address and phone number both inside and outside your luggage. The more you know about the history and customs of your destination countries, the more you will enjoy and benefit from your journey. Know whom to tip and how much.

Information you need to know about your credit report. Hard inquiries are created every time your credit report is accessed by a business when you apply for a line of credit. For example, your credit would receive a hard inquiry when you apply for a car loan, mortgage, student loan, or credit card. Inquiries remain on your credit reports for two years (24 months). However, hard inquiries impact your score for only the first 12 months. After that, they have no impact on your score. New credit including inquiries and any new credit accounts make up just 10% of your FICO score, and a single inquiry will likely drop your credit score by only three to five points. As long as you apply for credit only when you need it. Credit accounts refer to all of the accounts for which you hold credit, including credit cards, mortgages, and car loans. Credit scoring models like to see a healthy balance to the types of credit accounts (or “credit mix”) you have and can manage effectively. Negative information on a credit account includes late or missing payments. Negative account information stays on your credit report for seven years from the date it was first reported as late. If you close the account, the entire account will be removed from your report after seven years. If the account remains open, the negative information will be removed after seven years, while the rest of the account information stays on your report. Positive information, on the other hand, remains on your credit report indefinitely. If you close the account, positive information typically stays on your report for 10 years past the closing date. Your credit mix accounts for 10% of your credit score. A healthy mix means more points. If you don’t have many credit accounts or if you close your accounts, it could negatively affect your credit score. Payment history accounts for 35% of your credit score, and making payments on time is the most important factor in determining your credit score. A single 30-day-late payment can drop a good score by 90 to 110 points. When you fall behind on making

YESWECANNEWSPAPER.COM

payments on an account, your debt could end up in the collection’s department of that particular company. That creditor may then sell your debt to a collection agency, which also reports it as a collection account. At this point, the original creditor that sold the debt should not continue to report a balance owed, but you should watch out for duplicate collection accounts. Collection accounts remain open for seven years plus 180 days from the date the account was delinquent leading up to when it was placed for collection. After that time, it must be removed regardless of when it was paid or when it was placed for collection. Understanding how collection accounts can affect your credit score is tricky. The most important factor that will affect your credit score when it comes to collections is how recently the collections occurred, the more recent the collection, the lower the score. Multiple collection accounts or lawsuits resulting in judgments can also lower your score. Unfortunately, settling or removing a collection may not impact your score positively. Public records include any of your personal information that becomes public knowledge, including bankruptcies, tax liens, and judgments. The type of public record will determine how long the information stays on your credit report. Chapter 7, 11, and 12 bankruptcies stay 10 years from the date filed. Completed Chapter 13 bankruptcies are usually removed after seven years from the filing date. Tax liens remain on your credit report for seven years from the date filed if they are paid, or indefinitely if they are not. If you qualify for the IRS Fresh Start program, you can request a paid or satisfied tax lien be removed from your reports. Paid judgments remain on your credit report for seven years from the date filed, and unpaid judgments remain for seven years or the governing statute of limitations, whichever is longer. Since unpaid judgments can usually be renewed, these may remain on credit reports for a long time. There is no way to know exactly how many points your credit score might drop with a public record on file, but the effect of public records on your credit report could be severe. The Next Level 2 Meth is an all-too-accessible, highly addictive drug made from a variety of ingredients. As a central nervous system stimulant, it produces a rush, followed by a state of agitation. The relative ease of creating the drug, which is also known as methamphetamine, is the reason why it is one of the most popular illicit substances in the United States. In some areas of the country, meth addiction outpaces the rates for both heroin and cocaine addiction. Meth addiction is a debilitating disease, but there is hope for recovery. Many people successfully quit using the drug, and there is evidence that the brain can return to a normal state after a significant period of sobriety. Methamphetamine is a central nervous system stimulant made from various forms of amphetamine — a common element in various over-the-counter medications. Methamphetamine is listed in the same drug class as cocaine, operating as both a stimulant and anorectic, which is an appetite suppressant. Originally prescribed as a decongestant, antidepressant and weight loss aid, methamphetamine was once widely and legally available in tablet and injectable forms. In the 1980s, meth became popular again as a street drug. Methamphetamine remained popular in these same circumstances up to this day. The key ingredient in meth is typically the stimulant ephedrine or pseudoephedrine, which is found in some common medications. The product is “cooked” in a “laboratory” commonly trailers or remotely located residential homes and made into a consumable form. Meth labs are notoriously dangerous because the byproducts of the drug’s creation process (gas and spillage) are toxic and combustible. The two most common names for methamphetamine meth and crystal meth correspond respectively with its two popular forms: powder and rock. Meth is a crystalline powder. It is most commonly white, though it can also be yellow, pink, or brown. It is odorless, bitter and can be dissolved in liquid. It’s most commonly consumed via smoking, snorting or injection. In some cases, it is compressed into a pill. Crystal meth is clear or blue and takes the shape of coarse crystals. These crystals are commonly said to resemble ice. The rock form of methamphetamine is usually smoked. Many drug dealers “cut” methamphetamine with other substances to sell less of the actual drug for the same price and fetch a greater profit margin. These additional sub-

6

stances are often common household substances such as salt, sugar and talcum powder. In some cases, methamphetamine is cut with prescription medications, ranging from antidepressants to laxatives. These additives can enhance or alter the effect of the drug in a user’s system. Meth is three times as powerful as cocaine and is among the most difficult drugs to permanently quit and triggers dependency fast. Methamphetamine forces the brain to release an unnatural amount of dopamine at a given time, as well as norepinephrine, also known as adrenaline. The result is a rush, followed by a high. This chemical combination deeply affects the brain’s limbic system, which is responsible for emotion and memory. The first few times a person gets high, the decision is a conscious choice made in the prefrontal cortex of the brain. After that, the decision moves to the hindbrain the area responsible for non-voluntary action such as blinking and breathing. It becomes something that the brain believes it must do to stay alive. It becomes a survival mechanism. It is possible for the brain to return to a normal state when methamphetamine use feels voluntary, but this often takes several years of sobriety to achieve. While you may not become addicted to meth after one use, the drug does serve as an enormous temptation after just a single dose. The powerful euphoria of a methamphetamine high will often draw people back to the drug. . The human brain becomes dependent on meth in an extremely short amount of time. People who use meth will often spiral into something called a binge, in which they become hyperactive and repeatedly dose with methamphetamine in hopes of maintaining the initial, euphoric high. This uncontrolled drug use will often decrease its potency, however, making achieving the high impossible. While tweaking, a user feels emptiness and unease. Many people testify to feeling a loss of identity during this time. It is also common for users to experience hallucinations and extreme itchiness. Addicts at this stage are at high risk for self-harm. Eventually, if a person continues to use methamphetamine, the dopamine receptors in their brain are destroyed. This makes it impossible for them to experience a high, or even to perceive regular levels of pleasure. If a person has used meth more than once and want to use it again, they may be well on their way to developing a meth addiction. —————

What is the military? In simple terms, the U.S. Armed Forces are made up of the five-armed service branches: Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Navy. There are three general categories of military people: active duty (full-time soldiers and sailors), reserve & guard forces (usually work a civilian job, but can be called to full-time military duty), and veterans and retirees (past members of the military). And of course, there are the millions of family members and friends of military members, past and present. The President of the United States is the Commander in Chief, who is responsible for all final decisions. The Secretary of the Department of Defense (DoD) has control over the military and each branch - except the Coast Guard, which is under the Dept. of Homeland Security. With over 2 million civilian and military employees, the DoD is the world's largest "company. Each branch of the military has a unique mission within the overall mission of U.S. security and peace. The Air Force and Air Force Reserve is the nation's source of air and space power. The primary mission of the USAF is to fly planes, helicopters, and satellites. The Air National Guard as we know it today is a separate reserve component of the United States Air Force. Army and Army Reserve: The dominant land power. The Army generally moves in to an area, secures it, and instills order and values before it leaves. It also guards U.S. installations and properties throughout the world. The Army National Guard is an elite group of warriors who dedicate a portion of their time to serving their nation. Each state has its own Guard, as required by the Constitution; in fact, it is the only branch of the military whose existence is actually required by the Constitution. The Coast Guard's mission is primarily with domestic waterways. The Coast Guard does rescues, law enforcement, drug prevention, and clears waterways. The Marine Corps is known as the U.S.' rapid-reaction force. They are trained to fight by sea and land, and usually are the first "boots on the ground." Marines are known as the world's fiercest warriors. The Navy accomplishes its missions primarily by sea, but also by air and land. It secures and protects the oceans around the world to create peace and stability, making the seas safe for travel and trade. The U.S. operates in over 100 countries, including the U.K., Germa-

ny, Italy, Bahrain, Brazil, South Korea, Australia, Afghanistan, Iraq and Japan, just to name a few. Here are just a few of the benefits of serving your country, paying for school, military career paths, and more. Thank you and honor goes out to the many men and women that are servicing our country and to the many that will be joining our military!

I was born in Whittier, California. I was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1965 at the age of 19. I did my training at Fort Lewis Washington. My M.O.S. (job) was 11C mortars. I left for Vietnam in September, 1966 with the 4 th Infantry Division. I did my tour of duty (1 year) and came back in September, 1967. I can say that I’m very proud to have served this very great nation of ours and I would do it again! …………………………………………. t ’

ing on bringing about the desired result. No one succeeds overnight; failures do not happen overnight, either. To be in control means that, through personal struggle, you can find ways to empower yourself and influence both the direction and outcome of your own life. A strong mind shuts out feelings of fear and inadequacy and focuses on reaching the goal. Once your mind is quiet, you can challenge the beliefs you hold about yourself that are false or can be changed. Athletes will not improve their performance unless they reach for the goal that is beyond their grasp. Challenge the beliefs you hold about yourself and enlarge your territory. Control is having a certainty that you are able to shape your destiny rather than passively accepting events as they come along. Live your life with a purpose. No matter how many major changes and transitions you go through in your life, if you rely upon guiding principles and values that are important to you, they will always give your life meaning. “The tragedy of life does not lie in not reaching your goals, the tragedy lies in not having any goals to reach. It isn’t a calamity to die with dreams unfilled, but it is a calamity not to dream. It is not a disgrace not to reach the stars, but it is a disgrace to have no stars to reach.” A strong mind is not only for heroes, they are for people like you and me. People who are struggling through the tough times, so we can savor the good ones. Toughness is in the spirit and soul, not the muscles. Building a strong mind is a lifelong task. It will not only pay off when obstacles are in your way, it will become habit, A strong mind has been defined as having a great capacity to face challenges. and eventually a part of our identify. Be Strong! Being strong means having the resources, the mental skills, and the physical capabilities to confront difficulties of all kinds. When a person is strong-minded, they have the energy and stamina to face a challenge without being robbed of inner strength. Inner strength is there for a purpose! Mental toughness gives us the courage to grow from the stress we experience in life. It is a mindset comprised of several qualities and attitudes. Confidence, courage, commitment, control and Purpose is all needed to have a strong mind. If you are strong-minded, you express these attitudes and skills on a daily basis, no matter what is happening in your life. Some people may naturally be more mentally tough than others, but the good news is that you can learn to become even stronger. We have here a story of an individual that had to prove to himself that he had to face some challenges in-order to get his dream job. All of our life stories are difference, but maybe you can benefit from his story! We’re going to call him (Joe Doe) When I took the physical fitness (FIT) test at the FBI Academy I was the 1 percent that makes the top 99 percent possible. I failed miserably, so my challenge became twofold: maintaining confidence in myself while training to pass the rigid FIT test. My confidence plummeted. I worked with a coach at the Academy and he taught me the secret to building confidence which is called small steps. By taking steps so tiny that they seem trivial, you can sail through obstacles. Slowly, you can cultivate an appreciation for the small improvements when they happen. Small steps are concrete. Mountains are climbed one step at a time, not by giant leaps. We are less likely to feel out of control if we can locate the smaller problems within the larger situation. Everyone’s hell is different. I was scared—if I didn’t get pass the Academy’s physical fitness requirements, I wouldn’t become an FBI agent. I needed inner strength courage. My courage came from facing inward and developing a strong mind. Don’t run, don’t panic, Face the situation, believe you can do it, fix it as soon as possible, Waiting would only make the situation worse. People are often unsuccessful because they lack commitment to their deepest values. Competence is not an inherited trait, like blue eyes. Competence is the result of working hard and concentrat-

The Wonders of Stevie Wonder By One of His

Admires From child prodigy, to multi-instrumental genius, to living legend – We share some information that we found out about Stevie Wonder. His real name is Steveland Hardaway Judkins, the young Stevie Wonder was born six weeks premature in Saginaw, Michigan. The stunted growth of blood vessels in the back of his eyes caused his retinas to detach. The oxygen pumped into his incubator exacerbated the condition, leaving the tiny baby permanently blind. Mere blindness wasn’t about to stop Stevie Wonder from pursuing his love of music. A member of his local church choir soon after he could walk, the young singer mastered piano, harmonica, drums and bass before hitting his teens. Auditioning for Motown Records, eleven-year-old Stevie left founder Berry Gordy speechless. At thirteen, Stevie’s cut of ‘Fingertips’ from the Motown Revue sailed up the Billboard charts, becoming the first live track to top the Stateside countdown. On drums? A young Marvin Gaye. Scoring a series of massive hits, Little Stevie was surrounded by some of the finest tutors in the history of pop music. Learning at the feet of Smokey Robinson and Diana Ross, the singer rapidly matured and by 1964 the ‘Little’ misnomer had been ditched. Daring to cover Bob Dylan’s ‘Blowin’ In The Wind’, the single became a remarkable hit, pushing the boundaries of Motown. Matching global hits with a growing interest in studio technology, Stevie recorded an album of instrumentals in 1968.

Using the name ‘Rednow Eivets’ - ‘Stevie Wonder’ backwards - the record slipped out under the radar. An important stepping -stone, it came just a few months after Stevie Wonder jammed with Jimi Hendrix during downtime at the BBC. Uniting two titanic black American talents, the moment was to have a profound impact on Wonder’s career. Stevie Wonder really came of age in 1972 when he released ‘Music of My Mind’ and ‘Talking Book’ - arguably two of the finest albums ever made - within months of one another. However, the success belied almost two years of arguments with Motown boss Berry Gordy who refused to endorse his star’s embrace of the album format. Stevie Wonder won, and shattered chart records. Seriously injured in a 1973 car crash, Stevie would permanently lose his sense of smell, and temporarily lose his sense of taste. Which means that he really is just a walking pair of ears. An early adopter of the Moog synthesizer, Stevie would go on to own the first ever E-mu Emulator - effectively, the first easy-to-afford sampler. Later a staple of the emerging house and techno scenes, Stevie Wonder got there first. Again. Stevie Wonder has met several United States Presidents. Given a special award by Nixon, he was later to blast the Republican on the track ‘You Ain’t Done Nuthin’. However, the Motown star was to enjoy more cordial relationships with Barack Obama, who named Stevie Wonder as his favorite artist of all time. Information from internet
