August is National Black Business Month, and we recognize the Blackowned businesses across the country. Black business owners account for about 10 percent of U.S. businesses and about 30 percent of all minority-owned businesses. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, that amounts to approximately two million companies owned by African Americans. Nearly 40 percent of black-owned businesses are in health care and social assistance, repair and maintenance, and personal and laundry services. Other categories include advertising firms, auto dealerships, consulting services, restaurants, barbershops, beauty salons, and more. Among cities, New York has the most black-owned businesses in the U.S. followed by Atlanta. The highest ratio of black-owned businesses is in Washington, DC where 28% of all businesses are black-owned. The growth of black-owned franchise businesses has been explosive. In 2012 over 30% of franchise businesses were

black-owned, up from about 20% five years previous. HOW TO OBSERVE Support and encourage African American-owned businesses in your community. Publishers Note

Ethel Martin-Miller

I am so very proud of myself and all of the African American Business owners out there! I know that anyone who found themselves hungry for their own business, had great faith to step out and start your business! Below are two poems I found to encourage all of us as we get up everyday Working Our Businesses.

A poem for all entrepreneurs The road to success is paved with tests, So you’ve got to believe in yourself above the rest. Dream big, and let your passion shine, If you don’t, you won’t end up with a dime. Challenge the status quo, disrupt the market and say YES! And remember that innovation is an endless quest. Don’t forget to change business for good, If you want to change the world then you should. If you think with your head and listen to your heart, I promise you’ll get off to a flying start. Make bold moves, but always play fair, Always say please and thank you – it’s cool to care. Do what you love and love what you do,

Victory

Mariam Teichner wrote a very inspiring poem about refusing to compromise principles, even in the face of defeat. If you’re experiencing doubts, the poem Victory can be life-changing. Even in loss there is something to gain. I call no fight a losing fight If, fighting, I have gained some straight new strength; If, fighting, I turned ever toward the light, All unallied with forces of the night; If, beaten, quivering, I could say at length; “I did no deed that needs to be unnamed. I fought… and lost… And I am unashamed.

THE WORD How can I study the Bible daily?

          

PHILIPPIANS

Get a good study Bible and also choose a bible Translation book to use during your study... Study the Bible with an attitude of prayer and mediation as you read…. Pray. … Visualize what you are reading…. Focus on the New Testament first. ... Consider reading John first. ... Pick out topics to study. Keep notebook and marker handy… Know that reading the Bible will increase your Faith and Trust in God! If you have children, start giving them a solid foundation, one that is teaching them about Jesus Christ the Son of God.

One Writer’s Opinion Walk away from a bad marriage or die in it…Stop thinking about what the society will say! Think about your life and your family, friends and future. There’s no marriage department in Heaven. Free yourself! There is a picture of a man, let me tell you what happened to this man. The man’s only crime was getting married to a devil in a wife and his greatest undoing is sticking with the devil even when it became clearer to him that the marriage wasn’t working. Perhaps this man was of the belief of marriage been for better and for worse. The writer of this article advises people to walk away from their marriages if the day comes and their lives are threatened. To forget about what your pastors and priests tell you, marriage is never for

better and worse when your life is at stake, you are better and more useful as a divorcee than a dead man. Even in a relationship, you don’t owe your girlfriend or boyfriend your life; walk away than pay with your life. It is not called infidelity; it is called common sense. This article was written due to a wife throwing Acid all over her husband and he dies. Because there is so many abusive marriages and relationships that have taken a life this story is a reminder that you must plan an escape if you are being threaten or abused!

A KEPT CAR IS A HAPPY CAR

If you’re a car owner, it’s critical to know the difference between auto maintenance and auto repair. Both of these things are important to the overall performance, but they have different functions. Maintenance is regular service that is required for your vehicle while auto repairs are performed when your vehicle is not functioning properly. Your owner’s manual will have a list of maintenance schedules with recommendations on what needs to be done and when. The most common regular maintenance, that everyone has heard of, is oil changes. Yet that’s not the only service that’s crucial for your car’s performance. Common auto maintenance needed to keep your car in tip-top shape: Oil Change, Battery, Brakes, Tires, Power-Steering Fluid, Fuel Filter, Coolant, Engine Belts & Timing Belts and Spark Plugs That’s quite a list! It seems like a lot of things you need to manage, but many of these services are simple procedures that your auto repair facility can complete that day or with an appointment. Many customers delay maintenance for various reasons. They may think it’s unnecessary, they may be too busy to bring their vehicle in, they may want to delay paying for auto services, or they might not realize that doing maintenance now can save money in the long run by avoiding repairs. It’s OK if you don’t know the difference between a 5

spark plug and an oil cap – as long as you bring your vehicle to a reputable shop for regular maintenance. In a nutshell: performing regular auto maintenance helps keep your ride running smoothly and can prevent costly repairs down the road. Maintenance is regular service that will help prolong the life of your vehicle, while auto repair is when a part or fluid is not performing and needs to be fixed. Without proper maintenance, pricey repairs might be needed. For example, changing a timing belt is a straightforward procedure that is usually done around 60,000 miles. If you don’t replace your timing belt, it may break at the worst time, leaving you stranded at the side of the road. Even worse, it can do hundreds of dollars of damage to your engine. One way to avoid an expensive repair bill is to keep up on scheduled maintenance. Of course, even with regular maintenance, your car might need repairs at some point in its lifetime. Whether your car is running properly and needs routine auto maintenance, or your car is malfunctioning and needs repairs, the goal is to provide information for your knowledge in getting maintenance and repairs so that your vehicle will continue to running smoothly for years to come!

PEOPLE WITH CONCEALED

DEPRESSION

Beauty Salon

Depression is a very serious mental illness that often goes unnoticed for years. People with concealed depression are battling demons within themselves all on their own. They are not sharing their struggles and do not want to burden those around them. You see, for most people wounds are not something we are open about. We tend to bottle things up and attempt to remedy them on our own. We all need a purpose in this life. We want to be sure that we are in some form doing meaningful things. People suffering from hidden depression are not exempt from this. They too want to know the reason for their existence. They are much more susceptible to feeling things like inadequacy and anxiety which leaves them searching for something they can never seem to achieve in their own minds. Sometimes we all need help. When we are not expecting someone to feel weak or to be down in the dumps, we don’t see their cries for help. However, if you notice their cries and can help them in any way, you are creating a very close and trust filled bond with them. They interpret substances differently. Someone who is dealing with depression usually knows what it is they can take to ease their pain in a sense. They know that caffeine and sugar will raise their mood and that some medicines can help them. They actually have to put a lot of effort into feeling better, unlike most people. It is not as simple as taking a Tylenol when you have a headache. They often have a very involved perception of life and death. People suffering from depression often face their own mortality in moments of despair and seek answers to life’s deepest questions. They tend to shift from one terrible mindset into another. Sure, not all depressed people deal with suicidal thoughts, but some do. People with depression may not be able to eat much or at all when they are at their worst. That being said some of them may eat more when at their worst. It varies from person to person. People with depression will often sleep for what seems like or may literally be days. Sleep at times can be impossible while other times could be the only thing left that the person can do. When a person is depressed, they are dealing with a state of helplessness that will rock their world. If you have dealt with abandonment then you know how terrible it can be. When someone walks out of your life it can be a devastating, but this impacts those with depression much more than other people. It causes them to be more and more secretive about their feelings and creates a fear within them of being abandoned by their loved ones. They are able to come up with believable elaborate excuses for the things they are going through. Like if they skip an appointment or don’t return your calls for days. They can easily change the subject when things like this come up and turn the attention away from their pain. People suffering from depression learn to fake moods. They will often come off as happy and normal on the outside. When they let their inner struggles appear on the outside they feel as if they are bringing others down. People with hidden depression are not hiding their depression because they want to be dishonest, they are just working to protect their hearts. These people want to be loved and accepted just like everyone else. They have trouble shutting off their brains. Their brains are like sponges absorbing everything that comes their way. When other people are suffering it brings them down to their worst points. This sort of thing often triggers their emotional pain and can be crippling. They always think of the worst-case scenarios. While this is very stressful it can be beneficial from time to time. A high intelligence seems to be linked with depression, and they are able to respond to anything that comes their way. This makes them good problem solvers for the most part. This article is something we all should be aware of.

Information

Yes We Can Newspaper says thank you!

For the men and women who protect our freedom serving in the U.S. military, employment statistics are harrowing: 38 percent of veterans reported a 4+ month wait for their first job, 44 percent of veterans left their first post-military job within a year, 50 percent of veterans report being subjected to negative treatment or have reported feeling singled-out in the workplace due to their military status. Four out of five companies surveyed lack formal training to help civilian employees relate to veterans July 25th, National Hire a Veteran Day, serves as a reminder to employers to include veterans in their employment and talent strategies. A study from Syracuse University found that veterans have one of the highest return on investments, bringing with them a unique skill set that stems from serving in strenuous and high-pressure environments. They are strong leaders and team players, eager to create impact. This May, veteran unemployment was 2.7 percent, the lowest veteran unemployment rate in the month of May since 2000, showcasing the strides that have been made in hiring veterans in the civilian roles thus far. Yet while the unemployment rate for veterans has been in a steady decline, a significant number of veterans are still struggling to get their foot in the door, find meaningful work and/or inclusive workplaces. Only 54 percent of human resource professionals and hiring managers say they are familiar with military rank and jargon, which are commonplace on many returning veterans’ resumes. While veterans are generally viewed as hard

Even if veteran hiring is a top priority for the organization, the lack of knowledge about veterans, how to accommodate them, and unconscious biases inevitably makes it more challenging to recruit and place them in the right positions. Even if a veteran gets the job, historically, as noted above they have high attrition rates. This is largely attributed to finding the civilian workplace difficult to grasp or feeling that their skills were underutilized or unappreciated. National Hire a Veteran Day is a good time to take stock of the common biases, misconceptions and hurdles veterans face when transitioning from service to the civilian workforce. From there corporations, with the help of external specialists in veteran hiring and mentorship, such as our nonprofit Workforce Opportunity Services, can build on existing strategies to pave the way for smoother transitions from military service to the corporate world. t ’

JUST FOR YOU MEN!

Everyone Has Gas in the

People often believe normal passage of gas to be excessive. Gas comes from two main sources. Swallowed air and normal breakdown of certain foods by harmless bacteria naturally present in the large intestine. Swallowed air can be affected by a number of contributing factors. Dentures that do not fit well can cause people to swallow more saliva which carries air bubbles; postnasal drip tends to make people swallow more often, carrying more air to the stomach; smoking a cigar or pipe may increase the amount of saliva produced and swallowed; eating too fast increases the amount of air swallowed; gum chewing and sucking on hard candies also increases the amount of air swallowed. It is known that many foods with carbohydrates can cause gas. Fats and proteins cause little gas. Beans (Presoaking reduces the gasproducing potential of beans if you discard the soaking water and cook using fresh water). Vegetables such as artichokes, asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cucumbers, green peppers, onions, radishes, celery, carrots. Fruits such as apples, peaches, raisins, bananas, apricots, prune juice, pears. Whole grains and bran (Adding them slowly to your diet can help reduce gas forming potential). Carbonated drinks (Allowing carbonated drinks, which contain a great deal of gas, to stand open for several hours allows the carbonation/gas to escape). Milk and milk products, such as cheese and ice cream. Packaged foods prepared with lactose, such as bread, cereal, and salad dressing. Foods containing sorbitol, such as dietetic foods and sugar

working and committed, concerns and reservations about their mental health, PTSD and substance abuse persist. And, when comparing civilian candidates to veterans, apples-to-apples, “veterans are viewed as less likely to have the same level of skills necessary for the workplace and, to a lesser extent, the necessary education” according to U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation about Veterans in the Workplace report.

free candies and gums. Beverages such as wine and dark beer Here is the reason we all run, hold our noses and maybe say Ooh! It’s because of just to name a few of Odor forming foods like alcohol, asparagus, beans, cabbage, chicken, coffee, cucumbers, dairy products, eggs, fish, garlic, nuts, onions, prunes, radishes, and highly seasoned foods. The less likely foods to cause gas include such foods as meat, poultry, fish and eggs. Some vegetables making the list is lettuce, tomatoes, zucchini and okra. Fruits such as cantaloupe, grapes, berries, cherries, avocado and olives. Carbohydrates such as gluten-free bread, rice bread, rice is to name a few. The most common symptoms of gas are belching, flatulence, bloating, and abdominal pain. However, an intestinal disorder, such as irritable bowel syndrome, rather than too much gas often causes some of these symptoms. The most common ways to reduce the discomfort of gas are changing diet, taking nonprescription or prescription medicines, and reducing the amount of air swallowed. Digestive enzymes, such as lactase supplements, actually help digest carbohydrates and may allow people to eat foods that normally cause gas. All of this is difference from person to person, so for one week try eliminating foods or beverages in your diet that you suspect most likely are causing you gas or odor problems. Then gradually reintroduce them one at a time to help identify the offenders.

This article is a Re-cap about how Mayor Deborah Robertson of Rialto put in action the Senate Joint Resolution 179 signed on May 24th, 1994 states that the second week of June is declared National Men’s Health Week. Rialto has taken the initiative to launch their first annual Men’s Health day events. This year, the Mayor provided opportunities to supplement our community’s awareness regarding men’s health issues including prostate cancer screenings and a multitude of educational resources. The turnout at the Tzu Chi Medical’s screening table had over 20 men participate consisting of councilmembers, public employees, and Rialto citizens. Rialto’s men’s health day took place at the center of our weekly farmers’ market

which served as a comforting atmosphere to educate and inform men about their health. Overall, the outcome of this event was the normalization of a stigma behind men’s health issues which may prevent men from seeking help. The Mayor cares deeply about the health of the citizens of Rialto, so providing a safe environment for her constituents to educate themselves about their health was very important to her. Mayor Robertson plans to host this event every year in honor of the Senate Joint Resolution 179 to increase Rialto citizens’ awareness of potential health risks. MEN GET INVOLVED IN YOUR HEALTH!

If you live in the United States, you may be familiar with the term “common law marriage.” However, if you’re like most people, your understanding of common law marriage is entirely different from what the term truly means. There is a common misperception that if you live together for a certain length of time (seven years is what many people believe), you are common-law married. This is not true anywhere in the United States. The requirements to establish a common law marriage vary by state. Only a few states recognize common law marriages, and each has specific stipulations as to what relationships are included: Whatever state you find yourselves living in check out Legal Information and Resources for the specific requirement in that state about the Common Law Marriage. If you live in one of the states and you “hold yourself out to be married” (by telling the community you are married, calling each other husband and wife, using the same last name, filing joint income tax returns, etc.), you can have a common law marriage if that state allows it. If permitted then Common law marriage makes you a legally married couple in every way, even though you never obtained a marriage license. If you choose to end your relationship, you must get a divorce, even though you never had a wedding. Legally, common law married couples must play by all the same rules as “regular” married cou

ples.

Now, if you live in one of the common law states and don’t want your relationship to become a common law marriage, you must be clear that it is your intention not to marry. The attorneys who wrote Living Together recommend an agreement in writing that both partners sign and date: “Jane Smith and John Doe agree as follows: That they’ve been and plan to continue living together as two free, independent beings and that neither has ever intended to enter into any form of marriage, common law or otherwise.” If You Live in a State that Does Not Recognize Common Law Marriage, there is no way to form a common law marriage, no matter how long you live with your partner. There is one catch: if you spend time in a state that does recognize common law marriage, “hold yourself out as married,” and then return or move to a state that doesn’t recognize it, you are still married (since states all recognize marriages that occurred in other states). However, this is murky legal territory and we don’t recommend experimenting with it! This article is aimed at giving information on Common Law Marriages, it is each individuals responsivity to check out the law for yourself. The law can change from state to state! Getting married the traditional way can and will speak for itself!
