Celebrating the Accomplishments of Women By Ethel Martin-Miller Women are proud that a month has been set aside celebrating the accomplishments of women in American history. During March, we’ll be celebrating women in history both notable women and ordinar y women. All women have played a major part in the history of m a n k i n d ; w o m e n a re involved in just about every area that can be thought of. We celebrate the stay-at-home moms, the working moms, the educators, the veterans, the entrepreneurs, and the list goes on for all of the women that we celebrate. We now have women holding every position. In our next Presidential election there will be several women running for the office of President of the United States of America. Times have changed and it is certainly the day of the woman. History is

wonderful and all women need to know they can achieve whatever they set their minds to. The purpose of Women’s History Month is to increase consciousness and knowledge of women’s history, to take one month of the year to remember the contributions of all women. It is hoped that the day will soon come when it’s impossible to teach or learn history without remembering t h e s e contributions. T h e creation of women history m o n t h i s i n t e re s t i n g . According to Jone Johnson Lewis, “Every March, the country celebrates the accomplishments of women in American h i s t o r y. E v e n t h o u g h
these accomplishments go back a long way, most schools didn’t start focusing on women pioneers and their achievements until recently. Today, most colleges offer classes in
w o m e n ’s history, and most schools teach kids about the many contributions women have made to our c o u n t r y. ” J o h n s o n continues, “Working t o w a rd t h e r i g h t s o f
