In partnership with the Guthrie Memorial Library, YWCA Hanover jointly hosted the first Human Library, a unique, interactive experience that allows the reader to "borrow" one of the many human books available to discuss a variety of topics. Through these conversations, we hope to create awareness, empathy, and compassion.

YWCA Hanover hosted a Malala Workshop on Saturday, March 26. Girls in grades first thru sixth learned about Malala, created art projects, played games, and had snacks. The cost was $15 and ALL money has been donated to the Malala Fund, which advocates for girls' education.

We have been so fortunate to have such amazing young ladies volunteer their time and positive energy to make GLL a fantastic experience for our 2nd-8th graders. Our mentors are a diverse group of the best role models we could ask for for our younger girls.

Many of our mentors have been with us for all four years of the program, and a number of our current 7th and 8th graders have already indicated they are going to stay with GLL as mentors when they enter high school. Courtney Maqueda, our longest-serving mentor, is continuing with GLL even while she attends college!

Volunteer Spotlight Serving the community through YWCA Hanover Becky Bingle, Safe Home Volunteer YWCA Hanover Safe Home sends the best of well wishes to Ms. Becky Bingle, a volunteer of 18 years, on her retirement from serving the Hanover community. Becky began volunteering with Safe Home to give back to the Hanover area while also helping to create positive change for community members. As a single mother, she also sought to instill strong humanitarian values in her son through action.

Ms. Bingle chose to volunteer with Safe Home because as a former employee, she was familiar with the services of YWCA Hanover and saw an opportunity that afforded her the chance to serve with her then young son in tow. In the capacity of community outreach and various events throughout the year, Becky could share the initiatives and services offered by Safe Home with a very flexible schedule. “Unfortunately,” Becky shared, “domestic violence was part of my past, so I was familiar with it and I felt I could help others through my experiences.”

Becky enthusiastically spoke of her time with YWCA Hanover Safe Home: “I have learned many valuable things about life, about domestic violence, about people, about my community, and about myself over the years of volunteering for Safe Home. Over the last 18 years, the staff at Safe Home have become like family, not only to me but to my family also. They have supported me through two bouts of cancer, guided me in raising my son (they were very much a part of my son's life), and have been there, by my side, even when I didn't think I needed them. I am and will be forever grateful for the friends who I now call family that I have met through Safe Home. Although I will truly miss the staff, clients, and community - I decided now was the best time for me to step down from my volunteering obligations to focus on all the new opportunities life has provided.”

Becky truly exemplifies her favorite quote, "Be the change you wish to see in this world" – Gandhi.

Nair Garcia, Girls Loving Life and SALA Volunteer Earlier this year, I had the incredible opportunity to volunteer with YWCA Hanover. I volunteered with this organization as part of a service-learning project associated with nursing school. My objective was to volunteer at an organization that had an impact in the community and learn how community organizations benefit the health and wellness of community members—I did that and so much more. During my time with YWCA, I learned how the YWCA advocates, educates, and improves the health of its members as well as the community at large. By spending time with those in the childcare program as well as engaging with the inspiring members of Girls Loving Life, I have grown spiritually, personally, and professionally as both a member of this community as well as a future nurse.

My biggest takeaway from the outstanding people that I met at the YWCA, is that helping, advocating, and being present are superpowers that we are all capable of. From my personal research of this organization, while changes have been made, their core values have remained the same. From the instant I read their mission statement of, “eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all,”—I knew I found the perfect organization that aligned with my own values. Values of the YWCA like inclusion, integrity, advocacy, and equity are similar to the values that must be upheld in healthcare, and from my experience at this organization, I have been able to apply what I’ve learned to my personal and professional practice.
