Putting the 'Community' in 'Community Park': Groups Partner to Redo Hanover Playground Harrison Jones, Hanover Evening Sun Published 4:54 p.m. ET Nov. 17, 2023
A local playground is getting a total makeover thanks to a community effort that has emphasized the "community" in "community park." The effort to renovate Hanover Borough's Wirt Park playground has been a collaborative effort between the Hanover YWCA, Campbell's Snacks, the Hanover Rotary Club and Hanover Borough government, Hanover YWCA CEO Jody Shaffer said in an interview Friday. "I've worked in the human services field for 35 years and I've never seen a community come together from so many different groups and people to bring this project to fruition," Shaffer said. Shaffer said the YWCA first became involved as it looked for outdoor space for its childcare programs at its building on West Chestnut Street. With the YWCA soon taking part in a significant expansion of its building and hoping to double its childcare programs, the need for an outdoor space was high on their priority list, Shaffer said. Due to the age of the playground equipment at Wirt Park, the playground did not meet the Department of Health regulations that the YWCA follows, Shaffer said. That meant kids were mainly limited to playing in the gym at the YWCA and could not safely utilize Wirt Park. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Shaffer approached the YWCA's board about utilizing newly available funding and grants to offer funding for a new playground at the park to Hanover Borough government. When the Hanover YWCA approached borough government with an offer of $100,000, it turned out the borough was already looking into the same idea, Shaffer said. Upon the proposal by the YWCA, Shaffer was told by Public Works Director AJ Grimm that renovating Wirt Park was high on the borough's list to be redeveloped in the next year. “The timing of this happening was perfect," Shaffer said, and the Borough and YWCA began a collaboration that grew beyond the two partners. Campbell's Snacks, which formed in 2018 after Campbell's purchased Snyder's-Lance Inc. in Hanover, has been a frequent partner to the Hanover YWCA over the years, Shaffer said. When leadership from Campbell's Snacks heard about the playground project, they told Shaffer Campbell's wanted to help make it a reality. Campbell's Snacks provided several grants towards the purchase of playground equipment, Shaffer said, but they also lent something else: 32 staff members who volunteered to assist with the installation of the playground. YW MATTERS
On Thursday and Friday, those staff, clad in red Campbell's shirts, could be Jody Shaffer seen spreading gravel, laying out rolls CEO YWCA Hanover of underlayment, spreading mulch and assisting with the equipment. The Rotary Club of Hanover also came forward to offer its help. When Shaffer said they would like to have additional seating, the Rotary Club provided a $5,000 grant to help add six more benches to the playground. On Friday morning, eight volunteers from the Rotary Club showed up to assemble those benches. The support has been tremendous, Shaffer said. "This is not just going to be for the YWCA kiddos," Shaffer said, "but the whole community." The majority of the renovated park, for ages 5 to 12, is expected to open to the public in the next week, though a "tot lot" for one-year-olds will be delayed until 2024 because of the need for a specialized rubber flooring material, Shaffer said. While the groups were assembling the park, children from the YWCA's childcare programs were brought to see the construction, said Janice Bankard, director of development for the YWCA. Their faces lit up when they saw the park, Bankard said, reinforcing for her why the project is so important. "The impact, when you think about the children and what it does for them, is just immeasurable," Bankard said. Bankard and Shaffer hope the renovations will bring more life and activity back to Wirt Park, which has recently begun hosting more local events, including the annual Hanover Diversity Festival. Now, thanks to the partnership, there will be a better, safer place for the neighborhood to gather and play. "It's truly a collaboration of lots of minds and a willingness to work together," Shaffer said, "and it's going to benefit the community." Harrison Jones is the Hanover reporter for The Evening Sun. This partnership was a shining example of our Mission Motivated Community Committed slogan. YWCA Hanover is proud to partner with the Borough of Hanover and Cambell’s to provide a playground our community will enjoy for many years. Jody Shaffer, CEO YWCA Hanover

peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all YWCA Hanover unveiled its first Peace Pole in conjunction with Hanover’s holiday celebration this November. Located beside Santa’s Cabin on Center Square, the Peace Pole proclaimed ‘Peace on Earth’ in four languages: English, Spanish, Hebrew, and Arabic. The pole is part of an international movement to encourage peace in every nation, community, and heart. A Peace Pole is an internationally recognized symbol of the hopes and dreams of the entire human family, standing vigil in silent prayer for peace on earth. Each Peace Pole bears the message of peace in different languages on each of its many sides. Peace Pole Project® estimates there are over 250,000 Peace Poles in every country in the world, all of which are dedicated as monuments to peace. Now the most recognized monument dedicated to peace on earth, peace poles represent the highest aspirations of peace and goodwill inherent in the human heart transcending race, religion, and creed. What seems to attract people to the Peace Pole is the fact that its simple message of peace carries no affiliation to a political ideology, national identity, or even any particular side in a conflict. The message is a simple and heartfelt wish for peace. The poles are planted to uplift, empower, and elevate the human consciousness to embrace the oneness of our global family. The first YWCA Hanover Peace Pole is mobile, providing us with the opportunity to share the message anywhere in the community. Following its seasonal display at Santa’s Cabin, the Pole was relocated to the YWCA where it will be the focus of a Ceremony of Peace, on Monday, January 22 at 5:30pm. From there, the pole is available for temporary placement throughout the community. If you would like to host the Peace Pole at your place of business, please contact YWCA Hanover through Lisa Smith (lsmith@ywcahanover.org) or call 717-637-2125. If you would like assistance making a permanent peace pole for planting at your home or business, let us know. We can help you with that as well. Join us as we focus attention on the first word in our mission statement… Peace. As the YWCA, we have always sought to promote Peace, Justice, Freedom, and Dignity for all people, especially when it is so difficult for people in many areas of the world.

Artists' Voices
Carol’s award winning paintings have been featured in solo shows and juried exhibits in galleries and various museums across the country. She is a participant in the “Art in the Embassies” program having displayed work at the American Embassy, Togo, Africa and as a result was an invited guest to the White House for the 40th Anniversary of the program. Carol’s mother is also an artist, as is her daughter, Kara. This trio of talented women have been finding beauty in everyday life for three generations. Kara comments “By age 10 I had been to countless openings and events. My home in York was filled with cameras, canvases, paints, and paintings, finished and unfinished. It was a small household, just me and my mom. As I grew up I found myself drawn to creating my own approach and style.”
Carol currently lives in York, PA where she has established OMG STUDIOS along with her daughter, Kara Oldenburg-Gonzales, in York.

The Human Library Returns YWCA Hanover and the Guthrie Library will be working together on the Human Library. The Human Library® is, in the true sense of the word, a library of people. This is an event where readers can “borrow” human beings serving as open books and have conversations they would not normally have access to. Every human book from our human bookshelf represents a group in our society that is often subjected to prejudice, stigmatization or discrimination because of their lifestyle, diagnosis, belief, disability, social status, ethnic origin etc. The Human Library will either be Saturday, April 13 or Saturday, April 20… stay tuned.
Carlisle Indian Boarding School Carlisle Indian Industrial School in nearby Carlisle, Pennsylvania, opened in 1879 as the first government-run boarding school for Native American children. The goal? Forced assimilation of Native children into white American society under the philosophy of assimilation: "Kill the Indian, Save the Man.” Kate Theimer is a Project Partner with the Carlisle Indian School Digital Resource Center, focusing on cataloging photographs and authority control of student names. She also hosts the Carlisle Indian School Research podcast, and is the author of A Very Correct Idea of Our School: A Photographic History of the Carlisle Indian Industrial School (2018). Ms. Theimer will give a talk on the Carlisle Indian Boarding School at YWCA Hanover on Wednesday, April 3. She will follow that with a guided walking tour of the Carlisle Indian Boarding School on Saturday, April 6. Register online at ywcahanover.org. YWCA Hanover would like to acknowledge the traditional, ancestral, unceded territory of the ConestogaSusquehannock, Massawomeck, and all those First Nations who travelled this land on which we are learning, working, and organizing today. Indigenous people were talked about in the past tense and all the struggles they faced were in the past tense as well. It is easier to deny Indigenous people their rights if we historicize their struggles and simply pretend they don’t exist. We honor them as we live, work, and learn here at YWCA Hanover.

Girls Loving Life
Friends make life's journey richer. The fall session of YWCA Hanover’s free Girls Loving Life program combined this idea with our five tenets and focused on how to be a friend to our bodies and minds, others, our community, and our planet. Each of our eight Saturday meetings began with an introduction to a woman who made a difference in the world. We discussed the traits it takes to stand up for what’s right, and the skills it takes to carve a path where none existed before. The themes of determination, bravery, resilience, creativity, and compassion became a common thread in our discussions. Most of our time each week was spent on activities designed to reinforce the concepts listed above. From cleaning the square with the Upstanders to creating marble art, to building compost jars, our girls had a variety of opportunities to stretch their skills and learn new ones. One week, parents came with their girls and we had a great time working on how to improve communication, understanding, and respect. Program leaders Marcia Knorr and Nanci Mart thank the student mentors: Bree, Courtney, Hannah, Madi, Olivia, and Zoe for the phenomenal work they did as leaders and role models. Thanks to Deb Smith and the Upstanders for helping us build and take care of our community. We also thank Home Depot and David Ross Orthodontics– both made generous contributions that made our lessons more fun! Our final session is always a wrap up of the tenet-focused lessons. This time around, we created a collaborative mural in which each girl reviewed our lessons on her own piece of the mural, and then we put the pieces together to create an amazing final work of art, which is pictured above. Stop by YWCA Hanover to see it in person! Girls Loving Life is open to girls in grades 2 through 8, with high school girls joining as mentors. Our next session runs from January 20th to March 2nd, and we would love the important girl in your life to join us. Check the YWCA Hanover website for registration information. Through learning together, may we form not just joyful memories but new, lasting friendships.

She has come home excited and sharing with us week after week of what she has learned in class. A lot of people look to the approaching holiday season with excitement and anticipation. There are traditions, gifts, and time with loved ones to look forward to. But for people who have been impacted by domestic violence, the holidays can be a scary and uncertain time. Statistics show that the holidays can be a particularly dangerous time for those in unsafe relationships. The financial stress, the pressure of holiday traditions and interactions with family, increased alcohol consumption, and increased time at home can all contribute to an escalation in violence. Though none of these stressors can cause domestic violence on their own, when someone already believes they have the right to power and control over others, these stressors can exacerbate conditions that already exist. For survivors who have already left a violent relationship, the holidays can be a challenging time, triggering grief and confusion about how to move forward. There may be financial struggles, custody issues, housing instability, strained relationships with other family members, or the struggle of establishing new traditions to contend with. YWCA Hanover’s Safe Home is dedicated to helping and supporting all survivors, whether they are still in an unsafe relationship or have already left one. Our free and confidential hotline is available and staffed by trained advocates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Call the hotline at (717) 632-0007 for help. Even if you are not in an unsafe relationship, chances are you know someone who is. One in four women and one in seven men will be victims of severe violence by an intimate partner in their lifetimes, and one in fifteen children is exposed to intimate partner violence each year. Knowing the resources available to people who are impacted by domestic violence means that when someone you know is struggling, you’ll know how to help.

Early Learning Center
EDITION 21
ow Come gr w it h u s ! The Early Learning Center at YWCA Hanover offers a multitude of activities and events to help our students learn and grow. In October, we learned all about fire safety and had the local fire trucks visit our center.
YWCA Hanover Early Learning Center Children ages 1-5 Monday-Friday 6:00am - 6:00pm Breakfast, lunch, & afternoon snack included.
At the end of October, we had several local businesses downtown participate in our annual candy crawl event. The kids wore their costumes and trick or treated to the businesses downtown and received lots of goodies to take home!
Our November focus was being thankful. Our preschool classrooms started a new program called Gen Zen. Seniors from a local nursing home visit the preschool classrooms three times a month to do special activities with the kids. The kids love getting to visit and spend time with their grandfriends. In December, we will host a family event with a visit from Santa! Our Early Learning center serves 80 children, ages one through five. Our staff develop and use a creative curriculum to align daily lesson plans to the PA early learning standards. We also serve all children a nutritious breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack that follow the child and adult food program guidelines. Childcare is offered Monday-Friday from 6:00am-6:00pm. More details on the right.
