Stand Against Racism 2021 Rosemary Cintron Program / Volunteer Coordinator
We take a Stand Against Racism every day by raising awareness about the impact of institutional and structural racism and building community among those who work for racial justice. On April 25, 2021, YWCA Hanover Board of directors, staff, family, friends, and supporters gathered for a peaceful demonstration in downtown Hanover. The theme of this year’s Stand Against Racism is Addressing Racism as a Public Health Crisis. Public health is, and always has been, central to racial justice work. This year our theme is especially pertinent as our nation continues to face the intersecting public health crises of COVID-19 and racism. Throughout the pandemic, we have seen the racial disparities at work in our systems.
Communities of color continue to face the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 with higher infection and death rates. And individuals have used their fear of this pandemic as an excuse to act on their prejudices. From March 2020 to February 2021, the organization Stop AAPI Hate has documented at least 3,795 attacks on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
YWCA Hanover participated in a number of initiatives including partnering with sister YWCAs around the country to promote workshops, forums, and discussions hosted virtually and nation wide.
Understanding and addressing systemic racism from this public health perspective is crucial to eliminating racial and ethnic inequities, and to improving opportunity and well-being across communities.

EARLY LEARNING CENTER AT YWCA HANOVER: DON'T LET THE SUMMER BE A BUMMER! Katie Nelson, Director of Childcare
The Early Learning Center has been a busy place! The Early Learning Center is for children ages 1-5. In March, we celebrated Read Across America Week, where each child got a book to take home. In April we will celebrate the week of the young child by have fun activities planned all week. We are open from 6:00am 6:00pm, Monday - Friday. Breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack are included. We provide a safe, loving, and nurturing environment for children to learn and grow.
Our summer activities provide fun while promoting growth in all developmental areas for our youngest learners. Age appropriate lesson plans are developed around the PA Early Learning Standards. Summertime is a fun time in our ELC program with learning-centered events such as weekly water days, walks to the library, special visitors, walking trips, and playing in our outdoor sandbox. Lessons include gross motor skills, hands-on activities, water play, sand play, art, music, and learning centers. We provide daily communication including e-mails and pictures sent via Class Dojo so you don’t miss a thing while your child is busy learning with us.

The YWCA Early Learning Center is rated 4 out of 4 stars by the PA Keystone Stars and licensed by the Department of Human Services. All of our staff have current state clearances and are First Aid and CPR certified. Additionally, all staff in the ELC participate in annual professional development trainings.

SCHOOL AGE LEARNING ACADEMY Lisa Staub Asst. Director of Childcare, School Age Coordinator
The School Age Learning Academy is for children who are in kindergarten through sixth grade. They have been busy finishing out the school year which has included virtual learning days. During virtual learning days, the students come to the YWCA with their school laptops, and they are able to log into their school to do zoom lessons with their class and complete all their schoolwork assignments. During the school year, the school age students also have weekly music lessons with Ms. Deb Smith. Monday afternoons you can often hear them playing instruments, signing, and playing musical games. We are enrolling for our summer camp Phoenix program. Summer camp is open to children who have completed kindergarten to sixth grade. Camp will run from June 7th to August 13th, 2021. During the summer

we provide children breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack that is all included. We are open from 6:00am-6:00pm and parents can drop off or pick up anytime within that time frame, camp activities run from 9:00am-3:00pm MondayFriday. This year we have a very active and outdoor camp planned for campers. We will be including a waterfront program where kids will have to opportunity to go out to Codorus on Kayaks. Summer camp includes a variety of activities such as cooking, science experiments, weekly field trips, weekly swimming, trips to local playgrounds, art projects and gross motor games just to name a few. We also have a large gymnasium that kids can do activities in if the weather does not cooperate.
