Held each August for the past nine years, Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is YWCA Hanover Safe Home’s premier fundraising event. Walk a Mile, or WAM, has grown over the years from a few dozen walkers to hundreds of participants, all showing up to raise awareness and funds for victims of domestic violence and human trafficking. Each of the past two years, supporters have raised over $50,000 to pay for client needs that might not be covered in the grants that fund Safe Home. Girls Loving Life 2021 Nanci Mart, Lead Teacher, Girls Loving Life YWCA Hanover’s free program for girls in second through twelfth grade teaches participants the skills and confidence to do whatever they want - lead, explore, create, nurture – with kindness and passion. During the pandemic, GLL took one of its tenets to heart and adapted to the COVID-mandated shutdown with a virtual offering in the fall and winter sessions. Together with our high school mentors, we took a risk and developed a program that 25 girls could do in their homes while maintaining the connectivity and relationships our program depends on and nourishes. Obviously, this was not an ideal way to run our program, but in the truest spirit of GLL, our girls showed patience, helped each

other out, and formed a community that made it possible for us to share our message of personal strength and unity. Each Saturday morning, we discussed our topics, tried new things, and laughed – a lot! A special shout out goes to the parents who had their girls ready to go each week: we couldn’t have done it without your support! While these sessions were a fantastic opportunity for our GLL girls to build resilience and practice troubleshooting skills, we’re definitely looking forward to meeting at YWCA Hanover for our upcoming fall session. Our five tenets – love your soul, love your body, love others, love learning and growing, and love life – are the core of everything we do, but we don’t repeat our lessons. Girls
can join us at anytime and can continue with our program through eighth grade, after which they transition to mentors for our younger participants. High school students can join as mentors without having gone through the program and we’re always eager to welcome new participants. Our fall session begins on Saturday, October 2, and runs for eight weeks from 9:00 – 10:30 am. Girls Loving Life is open to girls in grades 2-12. EARLY LEARNING CENTER AT YWCA HANOVER: ENROLLMENT AVAILABLE Katie Nelson, Director of Childcare The Early Learning Center for children ages 1-5 has been hopping with fun! This summer, the ELC has been enjoying the nice weather outside with water play and the outdoor sandbox! Our preschool children, ages 35, also enjoyed weekly music lessons with Ms. Deb Smith. We recently opened a brand-new preschool classroom to accommodate our growing needs for preschool. We are open from 6:00am 6:00pm, Monday - Friday. Breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack are provided daily. Our Early Learning Center provides a safe and fun learning environment while promoting growth in all developmental areas for our youngest learners. Age-appropriate lesson plans are developed around the PA Early Learning Standards. Lessons include gross motor skills, hands-on activities, water play, sand play, art, music, and

Previously, she served as Treasurer for Butler PFLAG and on the boards of the Transgender Veterans Association as well as the Empire Conference, a transgender conference that was held annually in Albany, NY. Thursday, November 11: Carlisle Indian Boarding School Presenters, Katie Theimer. She has had primary responsibility for researching and posting the thousands of photographs on the Carlisle Indian School Digital Resource Center website. Theimer is the author of a photographic history of the school (https://www.amazon.com/Very-Correct-Idea-OurSchool/dp/1727272501), and she maintains the Carlisle Indian School Research podcast (https://carlisleindianschoolresearch.com/). We will continue to offer a free Saturday morning of music for kindergarten through third grade children. Sessions of "Music in the Morning" will be offered in September on the 11th and 25th, from 9 am - 11 am. The morning includes singing, playing music games, making an instrument, playing instruments, and a
snack. The program is free, but registration is required (only 12 children per session). Deb Smith will be presenting, “Salem Witch Trials: History and Legacy” on Wednesday, October 14, at 7 pm. The presentation will be held at YWCA Hanover. Upstanders will kick off their beautification program on Sunday, August 29, from 2:30-4:00. We will meet at YWCA Hanover to ‘clean the streets.’ All are invited to help out! The Upstanders will present a puppet show and diversity activities for the kids on Saturday, September 18, during Snacktown Fest. We are hoping to adopt a classroom for the upcoming 2021-2022 school year. The SRJ Adult book club will read, They Called Me Uncivilized: The Memoir of an Everyday Lakota Man from Wounded Knee, by Walter Littlemoon and Jane Ridgeway. Born in 1942 in Wounded Knee on the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota, Walter Littlemoon’s (Lakota) memoir describes the impact that federal Indian policies had on his life and on the history of his family. This narrative offers a rare glimpse inside the cruelty of the U.S. government boarding school policy on generations of Native American children. They Called Me Uncivilized also provides a unique view of the 1973 militant Occupation of Wounded Knee and the lasting impact that the takeover had on the community. YWCA Hanover staff and True North counselors and therapists provide a meeting space in the YWCA Hanover community room for individuals 14-21 who identify as LGBTQ+ and would like a safe place to be themselves or meet other individuals who identify with this community.
