L’ELISIR D’AMORE

A mix of tidbits and tales about Donizetti’s comic love story.

Beautiful Singing Bel Canto Italian for “beautiful singing” or “beautiful song”, bel canto refers to both a style of singing and the operas that featured the style. Bel canto singing is known for its brilliancy and vocal agility and was very popular in Italy in the early 19th century. Composers including Donizetti, Rossini and Bellini wrote operas that highlighted the bel canto style and its ornamented melodies.

What's in the Name?

Military Services

The name ‘Dulcamara’ is a combination of the Latin words for ‘sweet’ (dulce) and ‘sour’ (amara). The name ‘Nemorino’ means ‘the little nobody’ and comes from the Latin word for nobody (nemo), while the name ‘Belcore’ means ‘good heart’.

In L’Elisir d’amore, Adina buys Nemorino’s military service contract so he doesn’t have to go to war. This actually happened to the composer, Gaetano Donizetti – a rich woman bought his service contract so he did not have to serve in the Austrian army.

Encore!

Encores of popular arias are a controversial fashion in the opera house. However, at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Nemorino’s “Una furtiva lagrima” has long been encore bait—repeated mid-opera in recent years by such stars as Rolando Villazón, Juan Diego Flórez, and Luciano Pavarotti.

THEATRICAL OPERA PERFORMANCE

Quacks and Charlatans Charlatans, quacks and snake-oil salesmen have always used entertainment to attract a crowd in order to sell their wares. In Italy in the 16th century, these slippery characters often drew upon elements of commedia dell’arte to amuse the crowd while they pitched their products.

PORTRAIT FROM THE 19TH CENTURY OF DONIZETTI BY MARIE-ALEXANDRE ALOPHE

Gaetano Donizetti Donizetti wrote 75 operas but is best known for Lucia di Lammermoor, L'Elisir d'amore , La Fille du Regiment, Lucrezia Borgia, Poliuto, Don Pasquale. DONOR SPOTLIGHT: GWYNETH & ROY WESTWICK In recognition of 50 years as subscribers to Vancouver Opera, we dedicate this Donor Spotlight to Gwyneth and Roy Westwick. This dynamic couple has been contributing for many years and Gwyneth has provided leadership and support to the Vancouver Opera Guild for more than 10 years. Both originally from Vancouver, on their first outing together Gwyneth and Roy went to see La Traviata at the Orpheum with the Metropolitan Opera Touring Company. “It was love at first sight—both for Roy and for the opera.” says Gwyneth. In the early 1960’s they lived in London where they became regular opera-goers at Covent Garden. In 1968 they bought their first season tickets to Vancouver Opera and have been with us ever since. The Westwicks' passion for opera spans several generations, with their children and grandchildren taking part in the many productions and education initiatives offered by Vancouver Opera. Two of their three children live in Vancouver; one is a subscriber and major donor and the other plays violin with the VO Orchestra. Two of their grandchildren were introduced to opera at an early age and have attended our Opera Camp numerous times between 2015 and 2017. We are truly grateful for your love and support of Vancouver Opera. Thank you for your dedication. VO DEVELOPMENT

TAKING THE NEXT STEP…

Since 2004, the David Spencer Endowment Encouragement Fund has been investing in emerging artists at Vancouver Opera. This assistance has permitted many artists a boost as they become professional performers and complements our other young artist development programming. In this production of L'Elisir d'amore we name Brenna Corner and Brett Polegato as the David Spencer Artists. Brett debuted his career with Vancouver Opera and has since developed into one of Canada's principal baritones. Brenna has also benefited from her work here as a young artist and comes to us for the second time as an accomplished, upcoming Canadian star.

WE THANK THE DAVID SPENCER ENDOWMENT ENCOURAGEMENT FUND TRUSTEES AND EXPRESS OUR SINCERE GRATITUDE FOR THEIR ROLE IN HELPING VO BECOME A FOCAL POINT FOR YOUNG ARTIST TRAINING IN CANADA.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT: PASCAL & ISABELLE SPOTHELFER We salute Pascal and Isabelle Spothelfer for their extraordinary contribution to Vancouver Opera. Along with being very generous donors themselves, they have brought many new opera goers to VO and have led campaigns that have forged new and important donor partnerships. Their commitment to VO comes from a lifetime of being opera goers. Isabelle tells of her first operatic experience as a young girl in Bayreuth, Germany where she fell in love with Tristan and Isolde. She continues to share her love of opera with young people as an active promoter of Vancouver Opera in Schools, and has been a valuable member of VO special events committees. Pascal has been a life-long opera fan and avid supporter of Vancouver Opera for many years. He served on the VO Board of Directors from 2000–2009, and then went on to become Board Chair where he served from 2013 until October, 2017. In the course of their busy lives, they have raised three children. Their eldest son Cedric has just completed an Engineering degree at McGill University, the same degree that their other son Dominic will soon complete. Their daughter, Celine, will graduate high school this year.  Pascal and Isabelle are great champions of our work and their passion for opera is infectious. We take this opportunity to celebrate their generosity and extend a special thanks to Pascal for his leadership of Vancouver Opera.

Special commendation goes to members of the Vancouver Opera Board of Directors, Information Services, the Amatori Committee and of course to many members of the Vancouver Opera Guild.
