The design aims to create a lively community that encourages interaction between the local residents and the new residents who will potentially live here due to the opening of the new Micron chip factory. Two kinds of housings are installed onto the site which are the townhouses that’s suitable for family size along the river and block apartments along the street for the new residence. (26 units for the townhouses and 43 units for the apartments; one, two and four bedrooms)Since the site is embedded in a natural environment below the center of the town, the design aims to assimilate into this town by proposing a raised shared garden in between the housings and connecting it back to the town to create a “city walk” experience by having a bridge across to the little island from the raised garden.

The design aims to create a lively communty that encourages commmunication between the local residents and the new residents who will potentionally live in Baldwinsillve due to the opening of the new Micron chip facotry that is 15 minutes drive from the site location.

The design also aims to make a connection back to the existing town by connecting to bike path and other recreational infrastructure and providing new public space and programs in a big picture that encourage new intersections and experiences to happen. Lastly, creating public program/spaces that will function all year long especially function normally in the cold climate is also explored in this project. project .

Beside housings, other infrastructures like swimming pools, restaurant and cafe are inArc 307 _ Fall 2023 _ Lawrence Davis Section stalled to the side on both ends to serve for public uses and get engaged to this winter garden community.

In terms of programs, beside the bike lane, the project shines by creating a texture of public, semi-public and private winter green-house gardens built of polycarbonate panels to provide external spaces in a northern climate. The public green houses are embedded between the apartments and allow for different activities to take place. The two semi-public green houses are nested in the middle of the raised garden that are open to the residents to grow their plants and vegetables and gather on the second deck floor. They also bring light into the parking garage. For townhouses, the private greenhouses are attached to them for two units to share and allow lights to come into the ground floor. For apartments, a texture of greenhouse balcony is attached to each unit with movable polycarbonate panels to reinforce this winter garden concept. Lastly, other infrastructures like swimming pools, restaurant and cafe are installed to the side on both ends to serve for public uses and get engaged to this winter garden community.

Upper Floor Plan 1’’ = 1/20 ‘

Besides the “city walk” experience, to reinforce the connection back to the town where it is more urbanized and encourage new intersections and experiences to happen, a bike path is installed along the edge of the site that keeps on going up to the center of the town and down to other residence areas. The bike path also serves as a boundary between the river and the housings.

A well-balanced relationship between private and public usage space is explored in this project. By intersecting two gabled house which has the shapes smiliar to the neighbourhood houses, both public (for small businesses) and private space (performance hall) are created; more interestingly, the intersecting place in the middle becomes the room to shine.

In a compound, the housing owner can customize based on the need for functional areas and family size. Generally, there are ve choices of rooms serving dierent purposes, including religious space, cooking area, crafting space, and bedroom. When the space is insucient for a single compound, another plot can be attached to it to extend the site.

The exible combination of octagonal housing allows inhabitants to develop communal spaces based on their needs.

Therefore, OctaFlora responds subtly and respectfully to the local religious, cultural, and living demands.

The form of the community and the arrangement are derived from the users and, therefore, are organic. For instance, in a zone with 300 people, they can decide the size and type of religious spaces. Moreover, the organic spread of housing plots without a rigid grid reects the tradition of Nigerian tribes.

In this case, by removing two houses at two ends of the corridor, different scenarios can take place at these places which is designated for famiily unit types E, A and B with an expection of growing population in the future.

Site

Concept Sketches The project aims to provide a resting place that both gives the visitors unique spatial experiences with the dunes and serves as a symbolic piece in this site. Based on the exploration of geometric regulation from primary shapes, Interesting spacial interactions and experiences are derived.

Experimenting flexibility with scale of time, the project explores how time could be incorporated into the salt shed (salt amount alters througout the year) to form a dynamic architecture that encourages interactions with the local people and the community.
