Letter from head of school Dear YULA Family: Last year, in the pages of our Annual Report, I posed the questions: “Where are we going? How do we get there?”

I outlined that our goal is to create graduates whose feet are firmly planted in two worlds: young Jewish leaders who possess the skills and passion to make Torah learning a regular and lifelong pursuit, as well as model citizens for the world around us, with boundless opportunities for academic and professional advancement, at the same time setting an example by living as inspired Jews with deep-rooted values.

In reflecting on the year, it is exciting to consider the progress we have made! Our Judaic Studies staff has continued to innovate and develop an exciting new Practical Halacha curriculum that was implemented this past year. Our Gemara shiurim are increasingly focused on textual skills, so that life-long independent Torah study can be a reality for our graduates. Our Genesis Academy for Innovation now has an Innovation Lab, and our students are participating in a pioneering new project with the United States Veteran’s Administration to design and print household items on a 3D printer to assist injured veterans. Our Genesis Pod Mobile Innovation Lab has brought STEM education to students around Los Angeles, and this is just the beginning! We have once again registered a truly outstanding incoming 9th grade class that reflects a strong alignment with our school values. We have hired an outstanding new General Studies Principal, Mr. Richard St. Laurent, who has established a well earned reputation for strong leadership and high standards, particularly in staff development, curriculum, and educational technology.

Finally, we have been quite busy putting together the finishing touches on our campus completion plans. The end result will be a stunning campus that will include specialized labs, collaborative workspaces, and a state of the art gym and auditorium. Our Capital Campaign will present our entire community with an opportunity to contribute towards this important step in ensuring that YULA remains a truly outstanding educational institution.

We so appreciate the generosity, vision, and enthusiasm of all of the members of the YULA family and community in general who continuously support our efforts so generously. Your ongoing encouragement is vital to the success of our yeshiva, and ultimately the continued growth of the Los Angeles Orthodox community. I’d like to thank Joey Small and Anna Glatt for producing our Annual Report, which documents so much of the success that we have achieved. Did you know...

YULA’s PTA is stronger than ever! Our outstanding parent committee planned multiple events throughout the year, including a 9th and 10th grade Parent Social, exciting book club meetings, a Sephardic Chanukah party, and a fun Mahjong tournament!

Preparing for life after YULA can be a scary thought, but 12th graders leave our campus much better equipped thanks to our Senior Seminar course, developed and taught by Rabbi Yitzchak Etshalom, with the intention of helping prepare our seniors for “life after YULA”, giving students the chance to ask relevant questions and learn about different Halachic topics.

YULA students shine as leaders across the community. This year, YULA senior Eli Friedman achieved his life-long goal of becoming an Eagle Scout, after committing over 10 years to community projects. His training culminated in a very special project for Tomchei Shabbat, in which he built custom-designed tables from scratch. Meanwhile, YULA Sophomore Robert Leeds raised enough money to buy a new ambulance for Magen David Adom in lieu of gifts, turning his bar mitzvah savings into an amazing chessed opportunity.

As part of our Genesis Academy, YULA students are exposed to different career options in the scientific field. In March, students travelled to San Diego, where they visited the UCSD Medical School campus, and attended sophisticated lectures on Inflammatory Bowel disease, followed by hands-on endoscopy directed by UCSD gastroenterologists. Following training, the students were divided into small groups and allowed to use the endoscope to perform biopsies and foreign body retrieval on pig stomachs. In May, students enrolled in the Scientific Research classes visited Roll Global headquarters in West LA, where they learned about how food products affect metabolism, weight, heart health, cancer, the immune system, fetal development, memory, and cognition.

YULA’s own Genesis program will be participating in a major collaboration with the US Veteran’s Affairs, participating in a prosthetics challenge that will put students at the forefront of medical technology. Between five and six challenges will be issued for students to get hand-on experience building supplies to better the lives of veterans living with prosthetics.

Family of Lone Soldier Max Steinberg, Z”L, Visits YULA Did you know YULA has an awardwinning literary journal? Polymatheus is YULA’s outstanding interdisciplinary journal that incorporates exceptional student work generated by teacher assignments in the many classes offered here at YULA. Our staff of experts in each of the disciplines selects the best of the work submitted by teachers in each subject, ranging from an AP English Language and Composition research paper to a 9th Grade Biology project to papers on Jewish history and thought.

This journal should not be confused with a literary magazine or other types of school publications; it is strictly a showcase of academic excellence here at YULA. Only in our second year of publication, Polymatheus was awarded a Gold Medal and All Columbian Honors from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, an international student press association affiliated with Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism.

Out of 3,000 students in attendance, YULA’s 34 student-delegation was one of the largest among high-school’s present at AIPAC’s Policy Conference this year, and the club was recognized by AIPAC for its work in the world of Israel Advocacy. YULA’s Israel Advocacy club was one of two clubs to receive the Early Engagement Exemplar award, an award recognizing the many hours the students have put in in order to ensure that there is a safe and lasting bond between the United States and the State of Israel.

Our very own Rabbi Yitzchak Etshalom is a nationally renowned speaker and prolific writer in the Modern Orthodox community. He is flown in to communities around the US as a scholar in resident, spoke at the prestigious Tikvah Fund, and contributed to the recent Yeshivat Har Etzion collection of essays, “To Stand & Serve: On Being a Kohen.”

Under the direction of YULA alumnus Zvi Smith, YULA’s Arabic program continues to grow in leaps and bounds.

Now in its second year, this year, the program hosted Mr. Abdelmajed ElYagouby, a Libyan medical student from Tripoli, as well as Mr. Jason Hamacher, who showed the students music and photos of his expeditions to Syria, including never-before photographed images of Aleppo’s Central Synagogue. The program was also honored to host Mr. Yossi Klein Halevi, renowned Israeli journalist and author, who spoke about the modern history of Israel and the complexity of current events. Finally, this summer, second-year Arabic students at YULA will be embarking upon the first-ever Arabic immersion trip to Israel! They will immerse themselves in the Arabic language, meet Arabic-speaking Israeli teenagers, learn about the diversity of Arab cultures in Israel, and meet Jews who come from Arab countries such as Syria, Egypt, Iraq, and Morocco.

Highlights from the year The YULA Panthers are unstoppable! It was a big year for YULA soccer - the team won the Independence League Title, the first league title for soccer in YULA history, and made it to the CIFSS Playoffs.

YULA sophomore Yoel Cohavy was also selected as MVP of the league. This year, flag football had its inaugural season, after high demand from the students. In its first year, the team finished 5th in the league of ten teams, with junior David Hanelin and senior Noam Posner finishing all-league.

Our basketball team finished in 4th place at the Memphis Cooper Invitational, and took home 3rd at the YU Sarachek Tournament.

Student athletes finished the season with all-league selections across all athletics, including Basketball (Daniel Tzion and Motti Zilberstein), Cross Country (Noam Posner), Volleyball (Jesse Hyman), and Baseball (Noam Posner). In tennis, Zev Hirt qualified for the Liberty League Tennis Tournament, while in Golf, Sam Richter and Evan Teichman were among the top 12 golfers in the Liberty League out of 48. But

what makes YULA Panthers truly shine is how they show off their skills on and off the court, both as athletes and as mentches!

YULA teachers are unlike any others, always striving for excellence and challenging themselves to be even better educators. This year, our staff moved in the direction of the “Open Classroom” model, in which teachers visit their colleagues in action and learn from them. We have successfully implemented a “Teaching Rounds” program here in YULA, modeled after the “rounds” concept in a hospital in which residents trail an experienced doctor to learn from them. In several sessions throughout the year, teachers volunteered their class to serve as a lab for their colleagues to come in an observe, and then the next day offer reflections and feedback in a protocol designed to foster open communication and deep learning about the teaching process. Our rounds program was even featured by Yeshiva University in their national publication.

“Our program uses a unique and effective form of professional development that allows participants to observe their peers to see many different learning styles/techniques. The observed educator gets the benefit of another set of eyes who can see things that they may have missed, while the observer gets the chance to see how his/her colleague handles certain situations or activities in a different way. By facilitating Instructional Rounds, I realized how incredible and beneficial the program is. Every time I have the opportunity to observe another educator, it is a learning experience for me!” ~ Layla Bayramova

With so much of our world taking place online, it is only fitting for our students to know how to maneuver that world by mastering the language of coding. Students in Mr. Parson’s 9th grade Technology class participated in the Hour of Code global movement designed to introduce and inspire students to learning computer science and programming. The Hour of Code is a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics.

With many future jobs for computer scientists, including writing apps for phones, curing diseases, creating animated movies, working on social media, building robots that explore other planets, it is only fitting that our students are on the cutting edge of this realm of knowledge. Along with our Apple 1:1 program, arming each student with the technological educational tools they need, by starting early, students will have a foundation for success in any 21st-century career path.

Model UN Team 2015

YULA’s Model UN Team and Delegates took home numerous honors at the Yeshiva University National Model United Nations XXV. Out of 48 Jewish day schools from all over the world, the YULA Team won 2nd Place, Best Delegation. YULA has been named Best Delegation a record 9 times out of the 15 year Model UN history. YULA Seniors Jonah Kasdan, Eitan Meisels, Noah Kest and Jordan Lustman also took home individual awards, showcasing their skills for public speaking and diplomacy specially crafted after years on the team.

YULA had the privilege of hosting Mr. Michael Brandwein, highly regarded educator, author, and presenter, to speak to both our teachers and parents over the course of the year.

While teachers learned about strengthening the studentteachers relationship, the parent presentation focused on open communication between parents and their teens.

Throughout the year, students had the chance to come face to face with some of the most inspirational speakers and rebbeim of our generation. Amazing speakers from the course of the year included Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi of Medinat Yisrael, HaRav David Lau, Holocaust survivor and major philanthropist Max Webb, renowned Israeli author Yossi Klein Halevi, Consul General David Siegal, former Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and head of Mercaz HaTorah Community Kollel Rabbi Gradon.

Once a Panther, always a Panther. Alumni came together to reconnect with old friends and rebbeim throughout the year at a variety of events. The Class of 2004 had a fun 10-year reunion at Ditmas, where they shared YULA memories and custom YULA cocktails. A large group of alumni came together for the annual Alumni Purim Mesibah at Rabbi Shapiro’s house. Said Oren Shechter, Class of 2011, “It has been a great pleasure to participate in Rabbi Shapiro’s Purim Seudah for the past three years. It brings me great joy to see YULA alumni taking the time to come out and join their rebbe for a night of celebration, divrei Torah, and happiness.”

Jeremy Ives Class of 1992

1. What have you been up to since graduation?

3. How did your experience at YULA shape your decisions in the real world?

After graduation, I studied at Ner Yaakov in Israel for two years. I chose my yeshiva based on a recommendation from my YULA rabbi, Rabbi Heshy Grossman. After two great years at Ner Yaakov, I attended Yeshiva University, where I studied accounting. Upon graduation, I stayed in New York, first working in accounting at Deloitte and Touche and later in securities trading. That was when I met my wife Naomi and we soon moved back to LA, where I entered the local real estate market.

I currently am a real estate agent at Teles Properties and live in Beverlywood with my wife and our four beautiful children.

My class at YULA had a big impact on who I am today. Our class of 1992 was extremely inviting and no one felt excluded, regardless of cultural or economic background. That inclusive approach laid the foundation for me to work well with a team, to learn not to judge people and to give everyone the benefit of the doubt.

2. Are you still in touch with any YULA teachers or classmates?

Yes. The Class of 1992 IS an unforgettable class. We were all and remain very close. We meet up for reunions and other events. We have a group email set up where we update each other on special as well as not so special occasions.

4. Any advice for current YULA students?

Now is the time to form the most important relationships that will shape you for years to come – your rebbeim, teachers and friends.

Take the time to get to know your rebbeim on a personal level and spend time with them out of the classroom, and don’t be afraid to ask real questions – they have a lot of wisdom that can give you direction and clarity in your life.

Volunteer and get involved in organizations that you connect with.

“I have a lot of great memories from YULA. From the first day of school when we went bowling, to senior trip and graduation, YULA was awesome. I think my favorite memories are those I have of being with my best friends. We learned for Rebbeim’s tests together, went to Shabbatonim/YULA events, and had many fun conversations over the years.”

1. What have you been up to since graduation?

3. Are you still in touch with any YULA teachers or classmates?

After graduating YULA, I studied at USC, and then went on to get my MBA there as well.

Although I did not go to Israel for the year, I spent a month learning in a yeshiva in Har Nof during my time pursing my MBA. I currently live in the Beverlywood area with my wife and our son, and I work for my family’s toy company doing business development.

I am still very close with a lot of my classmate and see them on a regular basis. This past October we celebrated our 10-year reunion at Ditmas! It was a lot of fun to see where everyone is 10 years after graduating and how much we’ve grown.

2. How did your experience at YULA shape your decisions in the real world?

Don’t be too stubborn – it’s okay not to have all the answers. Keep asking questions and develop relationships with friends and rabbis to learn the answers, and make sure you have a set time for Torah learning every day.

My time at YULA helped me realize that there is no conflict between being a Torah-observant Jew and being successful in the business world.

It also gave me a good understanding of the fundamentals of Torah, leaving me with a good foundation to continue learning and growing later throughout my life.

4. Any advice for current YULA students?

I also ran cross-country during my time at YULA and loved it. I think all students should have an extra curricular that they feel passionate about that is a good way to balance out the rigors of school.

1. What have you been up to since graduation?

2. How did your experience at YULA shape your decisions in the real world?

Since graduation, I’ve spent the years studying and teaching Torah and completing a BA and MD degree. I am presently training in a psychiatry residency program, which is challenging but equally meaningful and rewarding. Above all, I have been blessed to start a family.

YULA’s double curriculum was undoubtedly demanding, but it empowered us with a belief that we can always find time for Torah study, even when faced with very busy school and work obligations. I am sure that many of my decisions over the years pertaining to the balance between various competing time obligations were influenced by this early exposure.

2. Are you still in touch with any YULA teachers or classmates?

I am definitely in fairly regular contact with some of my former classmates, and I occasionally bump into old friends whom I haven’t seen for years. Many of my former classmates have accomplished some pretty remarkable things since graduation, and I’m always inspired hearing what they’re up to. I have also remained in touch with many of my Rebbeim and still benefit from their wisdom and guidance.

4. Any advice for current YULA students?

Minimize “to be” verbs if you are in Ms. Frew’s class...and even if not. I continue to draw heavily upon the writing lessons I learned in YULA whether I am writing in the medical or Torah world.

Building update Last summer, with generous support from the Real Estate Professionals Organization of the LA Jewish Federation, we completed the construction of our cul-de-sac off of Costello Drive. The result is a safer and more private school setting, as well as the ďŹ rst step towards our campus completion project, which we will begin construction on soon. We are excited to share that the necessary preparations for constructions continue to move forward. The new building renderings only build the excitement that surrounds our future auditorium/ gymnasium, a new Library/Collaborative Learning Center, new classrooms, and new spaces for experiential learning. Thank you to our parent body and donors for your continued partnership and patience in bringing this monumental project to life.

A special thank you to our Construction Committee, who continue to put in countless volunteer hours to ensure the campus expansion moves forward in a constructive manner: David Nagel, Moishe Kahan and Shmuel Barak.

Building Our Future Since 2009, YULA Boys High School has partnered with the Jim Joseph Foundation, BJE, and Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles on a mission to address the affordability issue facing families in our community. YULA began to build its endowment fund with a goal of raising $2 million by the end of 2015, and $5 million by the end of 2020. We are proud to say we have reached the $2 million benchmark, and look forward to continue building this important fund.

The resources from this campaign will provide the financial foundation to build a curricular infrastructure for a state of art, first class education.

We are excited to announce that beginning in July 2015, every dollar raised for the Building our Future capital campaign will contribute 10% to our endowment fund. We understand that our physical space facilitates better learning, and the future of our school and the future successes of our students depends on our ability to provide a physical space and educational content that prepares them to become Jewish leaders.

Looking Ahead Genesis/Innovation Lab

Under the leadership of director Adam Stein, Genesis: Schlesinger Academy for Stem, Robotics and Innovation, has grown in leaps and bounds this year. The Innovation Lab opened its doors in April, offering a unique, innovative space on campus that allows for a variety of hands-on science and tech education. There, students are able to do video casting, pod casting, learn about 3D printing and 3D CAD (computer-aided design).

Students have already had the chance to participate in Sunday CAD classes, where they are learning how to create 3D images that can be printed in 3D. The lab features the latest in up to date equipment, including an oculars rift and HP sprout computers, as well as the latest in touch-screen projectors. Among all the newest equipment, the lab will be host to a series of seminars, covering innovative topics that won’t be covered in daily curriculum, such as computer software engineering and a series on 3D printing.

At its core, the Genesis Innovation Lab will garner a passion for science and technology, in an environment unlike the average classroom our students encounter day to day.
